My 4 Favorite Experiences Visiting Beautiful Tel Aviv

new york times travel tel aviv

  • Destinations
  • Middle East

Considered the Mediterranean capital of cool by the New York Times , Tel Aviv inspires as the best beach city, the best foodie city, the ultimate party city, and the world’s best gay city. Tel Aviv shines with sunny weather almost all year long with stretches of golden sand.

Absorb the atmosphere by walking and exploring the colorful markets and wind your way through the streets of Bauhaus architecture. Fall in love with action-packed Tel Aviv, a city with a major heartbeat.

My trip was hosted by the Israel Ministry of Tourism, but all opinions are my own.

Here are five experiences not to miss on your first trip to Tel Aviv.

1. Ilana Goor Museum

In Jaffa’s ancient port town, artist, designer, and sculptor Ilana Goor founded this seaside museum in her home on a hill in 1995, showcasing her own work and art and treasures she collected on her travels for over 50 years. Originally erected in 1742, the building sits in a stunning oceanfront location once used as an inn for Jewish pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem, an olive oil soap factory, and a synagogue for Libyan Jews.

Today, the popular Ilana Goor Museum boasts interesting rooms filled with curiosities and bold pieces of art everywhere you look. On the top-level floor, stare through the kitchen window where dangling copper pots and ceramic vessels frame your ocean view straight to the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. In the kitchen, witness the original “beehive technique” ceiling constructed in the 18 th century, uncovered due to repairs. The entire museum home is an architectural marvel and only enhances the existing displayed artwork.

Pro Tip: Find Ilana’s “celebrity wall” filled with photos of her with presidents and influential people from all over the world.

Arab coffee at Carmel Market

2. Carmel Market

Known locally as Shuk HaCarmel, Tel Aviv’s largest and busiest market is like an overdose of scents, sounds, colors, and people from all over the world crammed in a few small streets filled with stalls of fresh meat, fruit, fish, and vegetables. Here we also found knockoff goods, clothing and jewelry, and many prepared food options.

Coffee, History, And Burikas

After ducking into the crammed food market, our tour guide Yuma informed us that Arab men brought coffee to the modern world in the 7 th century as they found the beans and drank from the same cup for hours. We sipped the strong dark concoction without sugar or milk while learning about the Yemenite Jews who first opened markets here, although they were shunned by the existing Jewish people and considered outsiders.  Regardless, the Yemenites continued to play their music daily out on the streets in this Carmel Market area, even though they weren’t embraced by Israeli culture and serious tensions arose over the years.

Weaving out of the packed market crowd, we gobble down burikas in pita stuffed with tomato and egg, sample spinach and cheese Turkish bourekas, sip pomegranate juice, and try raw sweet corn served on a stick. It’s hard not to admire vegetables we have never seen like long tapioca root, Willy Wonka-like cucumbers, and ridiculously long green beans. A happy dancing singing food preparer captures our attention as he makes a phyllo stuffed roll with egg and tomato.

Carmel Market treats

Bauhaus, Bites, And Beer

Looking up from the market, fancy million-dollar apartments now hug this center and are built next to the Bauhaus-style buildings brought by Jewish architects when they were ordered in the 1930s to stop working in Germany. Erasing the pretty and decorative elements after the Great War, the Bauhaus style flourished here from the 1920s to the 1940s, now declared a Heritage Site as the area encompasses the largest concentration of this architectural style.

We sample the chalky Israeli staple halva and popular Arab knafeh , a sweet spun pastry often layered with cheese and made with a sweet sauce and sometimes roses.

Hummus tantalizes our tongues again and we watch as Iraqis sell their famous fried spicy beef cigars similar to meat sticks. At the Beer Bazaar, we sample Israeli craft beer with over 70 different kinds of local brews while we learn Goldstar and Macabe are the most popular. The tour makes us aware of things we wouldn’t have paid attention to like the original market entrance was once the entrance into the fruit market.

Pro Tip: To get to know the history of the Carmel Market area and sample a wide range of foods, book a tour with Yuma at WorldCity Tel Aviv Food Tours .

Scenes from Old Jaffa near the Jaffa Flea Market

3. Jaffa Flea Market

Jaffa is a place that integrates new and old, cheap and expensive — where you can catch a whiff of the olden days while witnessing the modern world and day-to-day life. This ancient city standing on a piece of land jutting into the Mediterranean is an intriguing place to visit with unique sites, historical treasures, boutique shops, and cultural centers. Young talents, artists, celebrities, and families from Jewish, Muslim, and Christian backgrounds all call this piece of land home.

Get lost in the Jaffa Flea Market’s surrounding area where streets explode with colorful kilim rugs, Middle Eastern antiques, and stores stuffed with art, furniture, and every eclectic find one could dream up. Eateries and local designer boutiques abound. It’s fun just to wander around to poke in the clothes stalls, take home second-hand finds, or grab some street food.

Pro Tip: Grab lunch at nearby Shawarma Abouelafia, around since 1879. Order the $15 shawarma and load up on extra fixings like eggplant. Across the street, drool over products like Jerusalem bagels in the window at Abouelafia Bakery .

4. Tel Aviv Promenade

Besides walking around the old Jaffa port and major arteries like trendy Rothschild Boulevard, spend a day cruising down the beach promenade that runs along the sand for almost 9 miles. Go for a jog, bike ride, or just chill on a bench or beach bed as white sails bob on the waves, windsurfers fly across the sea, and surfers catch the ultimate ride. There are an endless array of beach bars, clubs, and cafes to stop for a drink or bite.

Pro Tip: Traffic can be rough at certain hours, so walking is the best way to experience the city — but rideshares work well when you are too tired to walk.

Aria Restaurant in Tel Aviv

My Favorite Restaurants

Find top-tier chefs in this culinary capital with the city’s dining map expanding around the globe. Many chefs return from travels to combine tastes, flavors, and ingredients from the Middle East, often refining them with French and Italian cooking methods. Restaurants dot Tel Aviv’s streets from north to south but are heavily concentrated around Rothschild Blvd. Many restaurants offer a fixed lunch menu.

The Old Man And The Sea

Dine at legendary The Old Man and the Sea in the Jaffa Port, where an onslaught of pita and various salads and dips arrive complimentary with a main course and homemade lemonade. Order the fish and sit outdoors overlooking the marina.

For a fine dining experience, book reservations at ARIA , housed in a historic two-story building. Chef Guy Gamzu prepares eclectic modern dishes with a focus on seasonal and raw ingredients like fresh fish, ceviche, handmade pastas, and an ever-evolving menu. Sample some of our favorite dishes like thin raw fish, Iranian kofta , fattoush salad, cauliflower steak, and Uzbek steamed dumplings filled with lamb, cumin seeds, onion, sheep’s yogurt, and aromatic oils. For more of a nightlife experience, head downstairs to the bar.

Messa's fine dining in Tel Aviv

A step into Messa and you might think you are in New York City, with its uber-chic white-on-white décor, long fancy tables, and projected moving lips on the curtains. Here, famed Chef Aviv Moshe brings haute cuisine and inventive dishes created from memories of his childhood, alongside Provençal cooking. Every dish arrives like a piece of art — from tuna sashimi and beef carpaccio to porcini, mascarpone tortellini, and gnocchi with pumpkin.

Pro Tip: Since Tel Aviv is a major city, book reservations in advance to secure a table.

Where To Stay

Carlton tel aviv.

Beachside Carlton Tel Aviv (“Where the City meets the Sea”) is a stay you surely won’t forget as modern rooms come with expansive ocean views above the sea, a rooftop pool perfect for sunset cocktails, and a beach bungalow bar restaurant where a grand breakfast beachside is the best way to try many new foods. An extraordinary setup boasts cheese spreads, fruit galore, a halva bar, knafeh, raw fish, shakshouka, eggplant, and more.

Atlas Center Chic Hotel

For a boutique hotel experience, the Atlas Hotel brand offers many properties in Tel Aviv and Israel. Atlas’s Center Chic Hotel sits off of the busy fun Dizengoff Circle. Rooms are adorably designed and come with wine and chocolates, complimentary bikes, complimentary happy hour, and a rooftop garden.

Hotel Cinema in Tel Aviv

Atlas Cinema Hotel

The Atlas Cinema Hotel across the way is like a mini museum filled with old film memorabilia and an old Charlie Chaplin film rolling in the lobby, preserving the location’s history as a movie theater that was built in 1939 in the Bauhaus architectural style.

16 of the best hotels in Tel Aviv

Find the ultimate spot to headquarter during your trip to israel’s coastal city.

new york times travel tel aviv

N ot too long ago the only places for tourists to check in were chain hotels and youth hostels. Now, a new boutique hotel seems to pop up every few months in Tel Aviv . Be it pads close to the beach or rooftop access, there’s now more choice than ever. Here’s our pick of the best.

Main photo: the Jaffa, Tel Aviv

Here is the latest advice during the Israel-Hamas conflict

Hotel Montefiore (Booking.com)

1. Hotel Montefiore

Montefiore opened its doors in 2008 as one of Tel Aviv’s first boutique pads and has since managed that near-impossible feat of being a hotel where locals want to hang out. At ground level, a chic cocktail bar and French-Vietnamese bistro buzz every night of the week (reserve a table, or you won’t find one); the upper two floors in this 1920s, mocha-coloured building have been refurbished into 12 rooms with terraces. Elegance and prime location are the amenities here and despite not having a spa or pool it remains one of the city’s most impressive hotels.

2. the drisco.

The Drisco was conceived by a pair of brothers who arrived as part of a colony of Americans in 1866 and turned it into a guesthouse for pilgrims passing through Jaffa Port. A decade of meticulous preservation returned this architectural artefact to its singular glory, down to the original frescoes of jolly lager drinkers in the (former) basement tavern. The rooftop deck overlooks Jaffa and nearby Neve Tzedek and the wooden cabins of the surrounding American Colony neighbourhood.

The David Kempinski Tel Aviv

3. The David Kempinski Tel Aviv

The 31-storey David Kempinski Tel Aviv has everything you’d hope for: an infinity pool that melts into the Mediterranean, easy shoreline access and a swanky restaurant serving seafood. But it also has the rare ability to promise wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows framing some form of sea view for every guest (from those in standard rooms to whoever dares book the city’s largest penthouse suite — a triplex with its own sauna and infinity pool). Expect the same posh luxury you’d find at other Kempinski hotels, an outlier in laid-back Tel Aviv.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £££

Poli House (Brown Hotels)

4. Poli House

The flatiron-shaped Poli House is planted at the liveliest intersection in the heart of Tel Aviv — flanked by the entrance to the Carmel Market on one side and bustling Allenby Street on the other. It’s a sleek specimen of the city’s modernist Bauhaus architecture, and the hotel’s all-white exterior and minimalist fixtures were preserved with one key 21st-century addition: a heated rooftop pool. Poli House isn’t the quietest place to sleep, but if you don’t mind the bustle it’s steps from the Carmel Market’s food stalls and Nahalat Binyamin crafts fair, and within walking distance of the beach.

Spa Y Pool Y Price ££

The Carlton

The Carlton is an old standby along the northern tip of the Tel Aviv boardwalk. Here, a handful of international chain hotels hover around Gordon Beach’s volleyball nets and historic saltwater swimming pool. What sets Carlton apart? A plush rooftop pool and hot tub, with a striking view of the city’s coastline from Jaffa to the Tel Aviv Port. Guests head up to the hotel’s cocktail bar (also on the roof) to take in the sunset with the locals.

The Norman

6. The Norman

The Norman is where most Tel Avivians would stay if they could justify such an extravagant long weekend. This sleek boutique pad combines two side-by-side historic buildings, preserved down to the patterned encaustic tiles. It faces a leafy square between Rothschild Boulevard and Allenby Street that feels more European than Israeli. You’ll see local date nights unfolding over cocktails mixed with the hotel’s proprietary gin at the downstairs Library Bar, but it’s guests only at the rooftop infinity pool and spa.

7. Selina Neve Tzedek

What this small hotel may lack in high-end amenities it more than makes up for with its location. Squint and you’ll spy Selina nestled in a quiet pedestrian courtyard between historic Neve Tzedek and hip Florentin, overlooking Park Hamesila that trails the tracks of an Ottoman-era railway. Simply decorated rooms fill a cluster of restored 19th-century German Templar buildings. The reception area doubles as a bar, and both the beach and many of Tel Aviv’s best eateries are within a scenic, ten-minute stroll.

Spa N Pool N Price £

Setai Tel Aviv

8. Setai Tel Aviv

Looking at the manicured façade of the Setai Tel Aviv, it’s hard to imagine that a century and a half ago those spending the night in this grand building weren’t there by choice. It was an Ottoman-era jailhouse (and before that, a crusader fortress), but sparse prison cells have been adapted into 120 luxurious rooms and a Turkish hammam-style spa. The rooftop infinity pool is a major draw (and also a bit of overcompensation, as this boardwalk hotel strangely has no direct beach access). It’s close to the Jaffa Clock Tower, and just minutes from the flea market.

The Jaffa

9. The Jaffa

The Jaffa is the place to stay if you want a plush urban oasis that feels like a day trip into the city centre. It’s removed from the heart of Tel Aviv and parked at the southern tip of Jaffa’s labyrinthine Old City. From the outside, the 19th-century French hospital-turned-hotel has old-world charm (and archaeological gravitas) that sets it apart from the usual din and Bauhaus-style buildings of the White City district. Inside, the hotel’s neoclassical Chapel Bar is not to be missed: it’s a former sanctuary converted into a cocktail joint where stained glass windows still reign and a DJ station fills the (deconsecrated) altar.

Cinema Hotel

10. Cinema Hotel

Film and architecture buffs alike will appreciate the cinematic history and Bauhaus look of the Cinema Hotel, which is in one of the curved buildings enveloping the newly restored Dizengoff Circle. Once a 1930s movie theatre, the rooms in this modernist building aren’t spacious but offer an unbeatable location smack in the middle of one of the city’s hippest hangouts. Watch the action in the fountained circle from the rooftop at happy hour, or walk out of the lobby and cast yourself in the scene.

11. Hotel Saul

Compare Hotel Saul to the freshly baked Jerusalem bagels at its popular ground-floor bakery: seemingly modest but also a charmingly just-right treat. Amenities are basic (except for the sunny rooftop terrace), but its location on a quiet street connecting Dizengoff Circle and the Carmel Market puts the beach and most major attractions within easy walking distance. One street over, Bialik Street is a well-kept Tel Aviv secret with five small museums including the city’s first municipality (coincidentally, originally built as a hotel).

The Nordoy (Assaf Pinchuk Photography)

12. Hotel Nordoy

Hotel Nordoy is Tel Aviv’s oldest continuously operating hotel. Built in 1925 by the city’s original starchitect Yehuda Magidovich (responsible for around 500 buildings), this hotel in the Carmel Market’s shadow was run by the same family for generations until it was adopted by new owners and had a restoration facelift a few years ago. One of the improvements was repainting the hotel in its distinctive 1920s shade of deep rose pink; another was turning the silver cupola on the roof into a spa, and adding a nearby Jacuzzi.

The Vera

13. The Vera

The Vera is a boutique industrial-chic hotel with all the benefits of a stay along tree-lined Rothschild Boulevard, without the crowds or the hubbub. It’s located on parallel Lilienblum Street (a hipster nightlife destination), and you’ll be greeted with cookies and a glass of Israeli wine at the mid-century modern bar. The Vera exclusively hires local designers and artisans to craft the hotel’s organic amenities, deluxe bedding, and distinctive fixtures. Swing by the hotel spa and sundeck (on the wooden rooftop terrace) for an unforgettable Krav Maga class or massage.

Spa Y Pool N Price £

Fabric Hotel

14. Fabric Hotel

Rolls of wholesale fabric line the storefront windows of Nachalat Binyamin Street, and so this hotel’s name is a wink at the slowly disappearing garment district where it’s set. Guests can borrow bikes from reception and ride past fabric bales of colourful prints to the Carmel Market, beach, Neve Tzedek, or Rothschild Boulevard — all just minutes away. At the hotel itself, there’s a rooftop lounge and a complimentary happy hour every evening at the street-level bar.

15. Renoma Hotel

Only a tiny handful of hotels facing the Tel Aviv boardwalk don’t fall into the anonymously corporate category, and Renoma Hotel is the most stylish of the pack. Decorated by French designer Maurice Renoma, the hotel combines a 1930s building with a contemporary add-on structure housing 20 roomy suites. Bar 51, the restaurant on the hotel’s street level, is a Tel Avivian favourite and locals come to tick off the wine list and tuck into fresh seafood with a side of ocean breeze.

16. Lighthouse TLV

Walk too fast and you might miss the entrance to this somewhat oddly placed hotel. There isn’t much signage: it only occupies the top few floors of this office building at the intersection of Allenby and Ben Yehuda Streets, two of Tel Aviv’s busiest arteries. You’ll be glad it goes by unnoticed. The office building it’s housed in happens to be right on the shoreline and endowed with a sprawling roof that has an unfettered view of the Med. Centrally located, Lighthouse TLV is best for visitors who don’t mind noise and plan to spend most of their time at the beach.

Tel Aviv Travel Tips: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Latest update: July 13, 2023

In this guest post, Naomi shares everything you need to know when planning your trip to Tel Aviv, the best restaurants and accommodation, things to do, and spending your time there like a local.

My name is Naomi Bubis and I’ve lived in Tel Aviv for twenty years. I grew up in Frankfurt, studied in Paris, and worked as a journalist for German television.

I got to know Israel during my summer vacations and fell in love with Tel Aviv at first sight. The metropolis on the Mediterranean is fun-loving, cosmopolitan, and lively. A bit like New York, but fun-sized and right by the sea.

It takes some insider knowledge to really get the most out of a trip to ever-changing Tel Aviv.

I write about life in Tel Aviv on my blog Telavivnotes. You can also download a free guide there with the best areas for Airbnb accommodation.

Tel Avivians live for the moment, day in and day out. In this guest post, I’ll show you how to spend your time there like a local.

Ten interesting facts about Tel Aviv

  • Tel Aviv has at least 300 days of sun per year.
  • Tel Aviv is also known as the City That Never Sleeps.
  • The old town of Tel Aviv is called Jaffa.

  • Tel Aviv is a paradise for vegans.
  • The culinary scene in Tel Aviv is considered one of the most creative in the world.

Travel tips for Tel Aviv

The best time to travel to tel aviv.

No question, the off-season. In July and August, Tel Aviv is overrun with tourists. Plus it gets really hot in the summer months. Temperatures rise to 31-34 degrees, and the humidity reaches over 80 percent. That means you’ll be sweating. A lot.

If you like hot weather, then you’ll really enjoy yourself here because the heat shows no mercy, not even at night.

The positive thing about these months is the general mood in the city. The people live outside. Even at night. Eating a watermelon at a beach café at three o’clock in the morning has a lot of charm.

But the best time to travel is in spring or fall. In September, October, and November, when it starts getting cold in Europe, you can still swim in the sea in Tel Aviv at temperatures of around 30 degrees. And unlike in August, you can go for a walk without having to cool off in air-conditioned stores.

April, May, and June are also good months for traveling. Tel Aviv literally means “Spring Hill”, and the season sees the city coming out in full bloom.

25 degrees in the shade is just the right temperature to explore the city. And no one will step on your towel at the beach.

Tel Aviv’s skyline

How much time should you plan for Tel Aviv?

You should schedule at least one week. But in order to really immerse yourself in the vibe of Tel Aviv, you’ll need even longer. Fast-forwarding through city life would be a real shame.

Tel Aviv is a young city and was founded in 1909. It has almost 450,000 inhabitants, but many Israelis work in the economic and cultural center, so upwards of three million people fill the streets during the day.

The best way to get around Tel Aviv is on foot. The distances aren’t that great and there’s plenty to see.

How to find cheap flights to Tel Aviv

All major airlines fly to Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv. Several Lufthansa and ELAL flights arrive daily from Frankfurt and Munich; and EasyJet and Airberlin fly here from Berlin. The latter two are the cheaper options. It’s a four-hour flight from Central Europe to Tel Aviv.

You’d be well-advised to book early as tickets aren’t cheap and flights are often fully booked. If you want to buy a last-minute ticket, you’ll be quoted horrendous fares of 800 euros and upwards. Ideally, you should to compare flights on Skyscanner and book six months in advance.

The best way to get through security at the airport

Flights to Israel are subject to special security precautions – not unlike flights to the US, but even stricter. You should make sure to be at the airport three hours before departure. If you’re flying with the Israeli airline ELAL, the security check is even more thorough.

Try to remember that you’re being questioned for your own safety. Stay calm. If you have visas from Arab countries in your passport, you may want to think about applying for a second passport from your passport office before your trip.

Stamps from Arab countries won’t bar you from entry per se , but the questioning will be a lot more rigorous.

Answer the officials’ questions as politely and calmly as possible. Questioning upon departure is even more meticulous. You may be asked where you stayed and whom you met during your time in Israel. It helps to keep a phone number for your hotel or an Israeli friend in your pocket just in case.

Tel Aviv: Getting from the airport to the city

Ben Gurion Airport is located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. You can get from the airport to the city center by taxi in 20 minutes. The taxi rank is on level G of Terminal 3. Prices for long-distance trips are fixed, so you should ask the driver for the current rate.

Normally, the fare should come to around 140 shekels, which is about 35 euros. Taxis are much cheaper than in Germany. In Terminal 3, you’ll find ATMs and bureaux de change.

Buses are the most common means of transport in Israel. But to get to Tel Aviv by bus, you first have to take the shuttle bus to the Airport City. The shuttle bus stops are located on the second floor, at gates 21 and 23.

From the Airport City, take Egged bus number 475 to the central bus station in Tel Aviv. You can buy your ticket directly from the driver.

Alternatively, you can also take the train to the city straight from Terminal 3, on level S, for just 16 shekels. In fact, that’s probably the best option.

If you’d like your trip to be a bit more comfortable, you can also book a private airport transfer ahead of time. You can find more information here: Private airport transfer Tel Aviv .

Important : There’s no public transport on Shabbat (Friday afternoon to Saturday evening).

What to pack for Tel Aviv

Flip flops, shorts, swimming trunks, bikini, bath towel, sunglasses, sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, headgear, T-shirts, jeans, sweatshirt, sneakers, summer dress.

When you go to Tel Aviv, you can pack light. Only during the winter months from December to February do you need to take a rainproof jacket and a thick sweater.

Tel Aviv is a laid-back city. The New York Times crowned TLV the ‘capital of cool’. You can walk around dressed any way you like without people giving you weird looks.

It’s totally normal to walk your dog in your pajamas and slippers in the morning or to sit on a park bench with curlers in your hair. Tel Aviv has an urban hippie flair.

You’ll hardly see any men in suits or women in pantsuits. Eight months a year, the dress code primarily consists of: flip-flops, sleeveless T-shirts, shorts, airy dresses.

In the winter, Tel Avivians exchange their flip-flops for boots and put on layers upon layers of sweaters because 15 degrees are already considered freezing cold.

You’ll also need a power adapter for Israel, such as this universal adapter .

Is Tel Aviv expensive? Tips on saving money

Tel Aviv is definitely an expensive destination. The cost of living is high. Rents have reached New York or Paris levels.

You’ll be shocked by the prices at the supermarket. Sometimes, they’re as much as double that in Germany.

Tip #1 : Buy fruits and vegetables in the markets.

Tip #2 : Tel Aviv has a free WiFi network. This means you can surf the Internet for free on a park bench or at the beach.

Tip #3 : Get your coffee at Cofix. Everything only costs five shekels here (about 1.20 euros): cakes, cookies, beverages, and coffee. Cofix also operates six supermarkets in Tel Aviv where all products cost five shekels.

Tip #4 : Eat street food such as falafel, hummus, and sabich. One portion costs around 5 euros.

Tip #5 : Keep your eyes peeled for business lunch deals and happy hours at restaurants.

Tel Aviv

Getting around in Tel Aviv

This mostly flat city is great to explore on foot or by bicycle. In recent years, 40 kilometers of cycle paths have been paved. So go ahead and grab a green Tel-O-Fun Citybike . The 150 rental stations are scattered throughout the city. You have the following options:

  • A day ticket for 17 shekels
  • A 3-day ticket for 48 shekels
  • A 1-week ticket for 70 shekels

You can just cycle from A to B and park your bike at any station. Riding into the sunset down the beach promenade to the old town of Jaffa: now that’s something you have to try.

Tel Avivians love their e-bikes. The street scene has completely changed over the past few years. Nowadays, pedestrians need to watch out that they don’t get run over by e-bike-riding teenagers.

If you’d like to experience Tel Aviv with the wind in your back, then hire a battery-powered bike. An e-bike costs 100 shekels a day. Pole Position is a decent rental service – you can book a guide for a city tour by bike here too. They also provide city maps with bike paths drawn in.

Another popular rental service is O-Fun – e-bikes here cost 120 shekels a day.

Tip : Take shared taxis. The yellow and red minibuses stop at the wave of a hand and are a quick and reliable way to get through the city.

Beach promenade

Is Tel Aviv safe?

Israel is always in the headlines, and perhaps you’re one of those people who are concerned about traveling to Tel Aviv because of the security situation. But since terror attacks have gone global these days, a trip to the Mediterranean metropolis is no more dangerous than a trip to any other major city.

You can feel safe in Tel Aviv. Before you enter shopping centers, cinemas, hotels, and clubs, a guard will search your bag. Be nice to him – after all, he’s being paid (poorly) to ensure your safety.

Don’t be frightened when you see soldiers with machine guns eating a falafel at lunchtime. The guns aren’t loaded. You can walk through the city without fear.

Just never leave your backpack out of sight. Not because of thieves. But because Israelis have a short fuse when it comes to abandoned bags. Suspicious items are blown up by special units.

Tel Aviv is a safe place for women traveling alone. The city is alive at all hours. So you don’t have to worry about walking through the city after dark as a woman.

Even in Hayarkon Park, the Central Park of Tel Aviv, you’ll see women going for a solo run late at night. Still, use some common sense – don’t go through dark alleyways on your own.

The best Tel Aviv city tours: My tips

Tip #1: book a bauhaus tour.

Tel Aviv is also known as the White City because around 4000 houses here were built in the Bauhaus style. UNESCO has registered the White City as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Every Friday, there’s a group tour in English. The meeting point is the Bauhaus Center on centrally located Dizengoff Street where you can buy high-quality books and souvenirs.

More infos on the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv

Tip #2: Book Florentin street art tour

The tour guide will take you on a stroll through the trendy southern quarter of Florentin. The tour is in English and takes 2 hours.

The experienced guide knows all the stories behind the countless graffiti that adorn the walls of Florentine. Explore the hidden gems of the underground art scene.

Tel Aviv

Tip #3: Book the TLVEG tour

TLVEG organizes vegan culinary tours through Tel Aviv. The metropolis is a mecca for anyone who’s chosen to forgo animal products. The tour will take you to the vegan hot spots of Tel Aviv. And there are lots of them.

You should start the tour on an empty stomach because there’ll be plenty to eat on the way. The tour of the city’s vegan scene is a culinary adventure where you’ll get to meet cool people and try creative food.

Highly recommended, and not just for plant-eaters.

Tip #4: Read the alternative city guide DIY Tel Aviv

I wholeheartedly recommend the alternative city guide DIY Tel Aviv. It’s available as a paperback or an e-book.

Cheap hotels in tel aviv.

Abraham Hostel Tel Aviv is the coolest guest house in town. Lots of digital nomads hang out here. It’s got it’s finger on the pulse of Tel Aviv’s nightlife: just two minutes from Rothschild Boulevard and right next to the legendary Levontin 7, the best live music club in Tel Aviv.

The hostel has 350 beds, a great roof terrace, and a bar where locals like to relax with a cool beer. You can book a dorm bed (for around the 100 shekels) or a private room (for 300 shekels).

Another option is The Spot Hostel . Here you’ll find tastefully decorated rooms, a sun terrace, and stylish lounges where you can play pool, for example.

The hostel is a stone’s throw from Hilton Beach, Hayarkon Park, and the Gordon Swimming Pool at the marina, with its 50-meter saltwater pool.

Hotels in Tel Aviv for mid-range budgets

A cool hotel right on the beach is the Embassy Hotel . It’s located in the heart of Tel Aviv, just a 15-minute walk from Carmel Market. The colorful rooms, decorated in 1950s style, are particularly striking.

The funky Yam Hotel is located in the quieter north of Tel Aviv. From there, it’s just five minutes to the sea and the Namal. The renovated warehouses along the wooden deck boast cafés, restaurants, and shops with a view of the sea.

The rooms at the Yam (Hebrew for sea) have a surfer flair. They’re small, but cool. The perfect choice for beach lovers.

Boutique hotels in Tel Aviv

Besides all the major hotel chains by the beach, Tel Aviv also has a variety of tasteful boutique hotels. There’s a lot to choose from. Here are my favorites:

The classic is the elegant Norman Hotel in a side street off Rothschild Boulevard. The Norman resides in two renovated historic buildings from the 1920s. The 50 rooms and exclusive suites each have a unique individual design. The highlight is the infinity pool and the Japanese restaurant on the roof. If you really want to pamper yourself, then this is the place for you.

The Shenkin Boutique Hotel is located on Brenner Street, Off-Sheinkin. Sheinkin Street’s glory days as Tel Aviv’s answer to Soho have faded somewhat in recent years, but the area still has its charm.

The location is central and the hotel is a perfect retreat from the hectic hustle and bustle on the streets. The 30 rooms have been furnished with great attention to detail, and on the roof terrace, you can relax in a hammock after a massage in the mini-spa.

The Dizengoff Avenue Boutique Hotel is located in the very center of Tel Aviv, on the lively Dizengoff Street. It couldn’t be closer to the pulse of the city! It’s also close to several great beaches.

In the unique rooms of the hotel you will find details of the famous sights of the city. Here you will get a taste of Tel Aviv’s attractions, which are located right outside the door.

The Market House Tel Aviv Jaffa is located in the old town of Jaffa, right next to the flea market. The hotel runs the Milk Bakery, one of the best bakeries in the city. So it’s no surprise that breakfast here is a veritable feast for palate.

In the lobby, the remains of a Byzantine church are preserved under the glass floor. Boutique hotels generally know how to pamper their guests and this one is no exception.

The Lily & Bloom is yet another of Tel Aviv’s hidden gems. The hotel is a declaration of love to the Bauhaus style of the city. It’s centrally located on Lilienblum Street with its cool bars and restaurants.

The boutique hotel serves a delicious breakfast, and boasts a terrace and a bar with a happy hour. If you’re looking for a stylish intimate hotel, then this is the place for you.

My food guide for Tel Aviv

If you’re a foodie, you’re in for a treat in Tel Aviv. You’d have to be spectacularly clueless to have a bad dining experience here. Creative chefs characterize the restaurant scene.

The food in Tel Aviv is among the best in the world. The ethnic influences in this melting pot of over 70 nationalities are particularly pronounced in the culinary world.

Tel Aviv has a wealth of sensational restaurants, making it difficult to pick out a handful of favorites. But I’ve given it my best shot.

Tip : Make reservations as soon as possible.

Tel Aviv restaurant tips

Star chef Yossi Shitrit runs three restaurants in Tel Aviv, all of which are among the top ten: Mashya, Kitchen Market, and Onza.

Mashya was recognized as the best restaurant in town in 2016: modern cuisine with a Moroccan touch, sensory ecstasy for the eyes and the palate. Perfect for a romantic evening.

Kitchen Market is on the first floor right above the Farmers’ Market at the Namal Tel Aviv. In the evening, you’ll feel the full vibe of the city, as the locals end their day feasting on brick oven pizzas, tapas, and gourmet fish dishes.

Farmers’ Market Tel Aviv

Onza boasts the coolest location in the middle of the flea market in Jaffa. The old town with its Jewish-Arabic inhabitants is home to many a trendy restaurant.

Onza’s motto is “Food & Vibe”. Two young talented chefs cook Ottoman dishes here with a modern twist. The food is sensual, the music loud, and the audience exuberant.

The Thai at Har Sinai is located in a nightlife hot spot. Scattered around the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street are some of the best bars and restaurants of Tel Aviv. The Thai at Har Sinai is located right next to the legendary Port Said and serves authentic Thai dishes every night of the week. The atmosphere is young, with live DJs and lots of alcohol.

Santa Katarina right next door is also pretty great. Mediterranean cuisine doesn’t get any better than this. Sitting outside in the summer, surrounded by crowds of people in the bars and restaurants nearby, the magical energy of Tel Aviv is almost palpable.

When Taizu opened, it was like a revelation to the spoiled foodies of Tel Aviv. Rarely was a new restaurant received with such unanimous praise. Taizu combines Asian street food from different parts of the continent to create high-end dishes. The ultimate culinary experience.

Every Sunday, the Taizu celebrates Indian cuisine. The confectioner Ana Shapiro was recognized as the best in Tel Aviv in 2016. You know what that means: You’d better leave room for dessert!

More great dining experiences in Tel Aviv

Brasserie : An institution in Tel Aviv, open all hours. Yaffo-Tel Aviv : The flagship of Israeli cuisine by chef Haim Cohen. Romano TLV : Lounge restaurant with a live DJ by crazy cook Eyal Shani. Ramesses : Mediterranean hipster bistro bar in Jaffa with live DJ. LaShuk : Open kitchen with local delicacies. HaBasta : Located in a side street of Shuk Ha’Carmel. Daily changing menu inspired by seasonal produce at the weekly market.

Tel Aviv street food – My tips

Miznon : Gourmet fast food by star cook Eyal Shani. All the dishes are served in pita bread. The all-time classic: pita with roasted cauliflower. The Miznon has branches in Paris and Vienna. Hakosem :  The best falafel in Tel Aviv. Right around the corner from the Dizengoff Center, a popular shopping mall. Pasta Basta : The cheap pasta bar has several branches all over town. The pasta is homemade, the service quick, the customers young. Sabich Frishman : This unassuming snack bar has the best sabich in Tel Aviv. Sabich is the sister of falafel: pita bread stuffed with hummus, tehina, roasted eggplant, hard-boiled egg, tomato and cucumber salad, and pickles.

Tel Aviv is a paradise for gourmets

The best cafés in Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is teeming with coffee shops. That’s because Tel Avivians are communicative people, love good coffee, and appreciate their local barista.

Bucke has two cafés in Tel Aviv: uptown in the north and midtown near the Habima Theater. Its breakfast buffets with colorful salads, dips, and vegetable creations are renowned throughout Tel Aviv. Bucke only serves vegetarian dishes.

The Bucke

Loveat  has the best organic coffee in town. The cafés of the Loveat chain, scattered all over the city, have delicious sandwiches and lunch deals with lots of vegetables, tehina, quinoa, wild rice, tomatoes, and chillies.

Nahat Cafe is just the place for coffee lovers. It smells of freshly ground beans and panini. A great place to open up your laptop and take a seat next to the locals.

Café Xoho is an international meeting place for students and tourists. You’ll hear a great many languages spoken here. Enjoy gluten-free chocolate cakes, matcha tea, and kale salad.

Cafelix is another coffee bean paradise. The coolest branch is located in lively Levinsky Market, nestled in between spice merchants and hipster bars.

Tel Aviv’s hidden gems : The best vegan restaurants in Tel Aviv

Fact: Tel Aviv is among the top five vegan destinations in the world. You can find vegetarian options on the menu in almost every café. And no, not just a side salad, I’m talking full-blown dishes. Cappuccino with almond or soy milk is available everywhere.

Fruit stall in Tel Aviv

Here are my recommendations for 100% vegan restaurants:

Herzog on lively Ivn Gvirol has a daily changing menu featuring dishes that chef Roey Herzog calls ‘mountains’: rice mountains, quinoa mountains, lettuce mountains, buckwheat mountains, topped with vegetables, tehina, chilli.

Roey knows how to conjure up delicious food with vegetables. The best (but rather pricey) place for a quick lunch. Recommended: zoodles with tehina spirulina dressing.

At peak times, you’ll have to join a long line if you want to eat at Marketlv on Dizengoff Street. It serves different stews and soups every day: Indian, Mexican, Moroccan, and more. The food is cheap and tastes great.

The Dosa Bar is a wonderful place to go for lunch. The South Indian street food is vegan, gluten-free, and, most of all, delicious. Dosas are a kind of pancake, which are varied with spicy fillings.

Zakaim , a self-styled vegan boutique, plays in the culinary big leagues. The restaurant is run by the Zakaim siblings. The menu is Persian-Israeli-vegan. This very hip and stylishly furnished restaurant is located right in the middle of the nightlife district surrounding the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street. Essential eating: the potato wedges.

Tel Aviv’s beaches: The most beautiful beaches

Gordon Beach has everything a beach-lover’s heart desires. A laid-back beach café called LalaLand, volleyball nets, fitness equipment, and lots of sun worshipers. Right next door is the Olympic-grade Gordon Pool and the Topsea Surfing Center.

Gordon Pool, Tel Aviv

Mezizim Beach is located at the northern tip of the beach promenade. A bay bordered by the religious beach (yes, that exists too) and the harbor (Namal). The 9Beach lounge café is located on Mezizim Beach. It’s especially lively in the evenings. And if live football matches are being broadcast live on the big screen anywhere in town, it’s sure to be here. A nice hangout for a beer with your feet in the sand.

Hilton Beach is located in a bay right next to the dog beach and the gay beach. This is the place to be for water sports enthusiasts. You can hire SUP boards, kayaks, or surfboards at the Sea Center Club. Lots of kids and teenagers come here every Saturday morning to learn how to surf.

Surfers in Tel Aviv

Banana Beach is located closer to the old town of Jaffa and stands out with its characteristic yellow beach chairs. A beach without an attitude, laid-back, fewer tourists. It also has a surfing school.

Tip : On Friday afternoons, Banana Beach morphs into Drum Beach. Standing on the cliffs, the drummers get out their bongos and congas to welcome Shabbat with a drum session.

Israeli Soldier’s Video Undercuts Medic’s Account of Sexual Assault

Kibbutz residents concluded that two sisters killed on Oct. 7 were not victims of sexual violence.

  • Share full article

A burned car in front of a security gate on a road.

By Adam Rasgon and Natan Odenheimer

Reporting from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv

New video has surfaced that undercuts the account of an Israeli military paramedic who said two teenagers killed in the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Oct. 7 were sexually assaulted.

The unnamed paramedic, from an Israeli commando unit, was among dozens of people interviewed for a Dec. 28 article by The New York Times that examined sexual violence on Oct. 7 . He said he discovered the bodies of two partially clothed teenage girls in a home in Kibbutz Be’eri that bore signs of sexual violence.

The Associated Press , CNN and The Washington Post reported similar accounts from a military paramedic who spoke on condition of anonymity.

But footage taken by an Israeli soldier who was in Be’eri on Oct. 7, which was viewed by leading community members in February and by The Times this month, shows the bodies of three female victims, fully clothed and with no apparent signs of sexual violence, at a home where many residents had believed the assaults occurred.

Though it is unclear if the medic was referring to the same scene, residents said that in no other home in Be’eri were two teenage girls killed, and they concluded from the video that the girls had not been sexually assaulted.

Nili Bar Sinai, a member of a group from the kibbutz that looked into claims of sexual assault at the house, said, “This story is false.”

Reached by The Times, the medic declined to say whether he still stood by the account, saying he would like to put the attacks behind him.

Later, an Israeli military spokesman said that the medic stood by his testimony but might have misremembered the place where he saw the teenage girls. The spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the attacks on Oct. 7 are the subject of an active police investigation, said the medic operated in several villages that weekend and might have seen the teenagers in a different kibbutz. The spokesman did not specify which one. There is no complete public record of how every victim of the Oct. 7 attack was killed.

The paramedic’s account was a prominent example in international news reports describing sexual violence on Oct. 7, and The Times reported that Be’eri was one of at least seven locations where Israeli women and girls appeared to have been sexually assaulted or mutilated.

A United Nations report that was released this month said there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, was committed in multiple locations, and “clear and convincing information” that some hostages being held in Gaza had also been subjected to rape and sexual torture.

The report said the U.N. team was unable to establish whether sexual violence occurred in Be’eri and that at least two Be’eri cases reported in the news media were determined to be “unfounded,” but it did not explicitly specify a military paramedic’s account.

The report added that the team “received credible information” about bodies found naked, tied or gagged in Be’eri and that “circumstantial evidence — notably the pattern of female victims found undressed and bound — may be indicative of some forms of sexual violence.”

Beyond Be’eri, while detailing the daunting challenges the team faced in trying to determine what happened on Oct. 7, the report said there were “reasonable grounds to believe that multiple incidents of sexual violence took place” at or around the Nova music festival and “credible information” of two rapes on a main road from the festival as well as a “verified” case in Kibbutz Re’im.

Hamas leaders have denied the accusations of sexual violence, and the U.N. report, noting the array of fighters who took part in the Oct. 7 attacks, said the experts’ mission was not to determine who was responsible.

The paramedic, a reservist in a special-operations rescue unit within the Air Force, had described finding one of the girls lying on her side, boxer shorts torn and bruises by her groin. The other, he said, had her face flat on the ground, with pajamas pulled to her knees, her bottom exposed and semen smeared on her back.

The Israeli military had allowed the paramedic to speak with reporters on the condition that he not be identified because he serves in an elite unit.

The new video that the community members have seen shows the bodies of two female victims in a corridor outside a safe room, with blood stains on their clothing and the floor. In a nearby room, a third person was filmed on the floor in a pool of blood, wearing pajama pants and a sweatshirt.

A reporter for the Times who viewed the video confirmed the identities of the victims with Ms. Bar Sinai and three members of the kibbutz who knew the family. They identified them as two sisters and their mother. The three kibbutz members asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The video first became known to the kibbutz on Feb. 12, when soldiers in the unit that had found the sisters’ remains returned to Be’eri for a tour led by kibbutz members, according to those four members.

While visiting the home, kibbutz members discussed the allegations of sexual assault. Taken aback, the troops shared the eight-second video clip, the four Be’eri members said.

“What happened to them was horrifying, but it was a great relief to find out they weren’t sexually assaulted,” Ms. Bar Sinai said.

At least 97 civilians were killed in Be’eri, a small community just east of Gaza that was one of the hardest hit by the Hamas-led attack.

The military paramedic was not the only person who had described evidence of sexual assault in Be’eri. Many community members had come to believe that the teenage sisters were victims of sexual violence because of other accounts, including from emergency response volunteers who spoke about this incident publicly.

“Until recently, we all thought it was true,” said Amit Solvy, a neighbor.

Patrick Kingsley contributed reporting from Jerusalem.

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire  in Gaza for the month of Ramadan, breaking a five-month impasse during which the United States vetoed several calls for ending the war.

Witnesses have described scenes of fear and deprivation  at Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, which has been under an Israeli siege. Israel said the operation is targeting Hamas leaders.

In Gaza, officials are struggling to count the dead because many bodies are trapped beneath rubble. The buried make up a shadow death toll in the territory.

A Power Vacuum: Since the start of the war, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has done little to address the power vacuum that would appear after Israeli forces leave Gaza. The risks of inaction are already apparent in Gaza City .

Chuck Schumer’s Speech:  Speaking to the U.S. Senate, the majority leader and highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States branded Netanyahu a major impediment to peace. In an interview, he explained why he felt obligated  to call for new leadership in Israel.

A Tough Balancing Act: Israel has been noticeably out of step with Western nations when it comes to relations with Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. That approach reflects unique security needs that have gained new relevance  since the start of the war in Gaza.

A Struggle for Life’s Basics: Most of Gaza’s population fled to the southern territory of Rafah , hoping to escape the war. As they hunt for food and shelter, a potential Israeli invasion has added to their fears.

The goal was to create a luxurious and pampering space that creates an inviting atmosphere for the guests and friends of the apartment owners. The couple's 215-square-meter duplex on the 32nd floor, with a 20- square-meter balcony, includes a public space of a kitchen and living room with a six-meter-high double ceiling.

Natural materials and a luxurious finish: the foreign businessman wants to spend time in Tel Aviv but also feel at home. Architect Limor Beshen made his wish come true in a duplex in Tzameret Park

What do you offer to an entrepreneur and businessman from abroad who has courage, who wants for himself and his partner an apartment in Tel Aviv that will ensure that every visit to the city will be unforgettable, one that combines party hosting with quality time as a couple and relaxation? Architect Limor Beshen had to face the challenge in a duplex in the Tzamerot neighborhood in Tel Aviv, and turn it into a unique space for entertaining and staying, inspired by New York loft apartments with an affinity for meticulous Italian style.

The couple's 215-square-meter duplex on the 32nd floor, with a 20-square-meter balcony, includes a public space of a kitchen and living room with a six-meter-high double ceiling, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing a breathtaking urban landscape.

In addition, an accommodation unit, guest services, a laundry room and a double suite on the top floor.

"The goal was to create a luxurious and pampering space that creates an inviting atmosphere for the guests and friends of the apartment owners, but also gives the couple themselves a pleasant place to be intimate, relax and feel at home when they are on vacation in Tel Aviv," Bashan explains.

She chose to combine different natural materials - stone, wood and glass - in order to create a space that is impressive and relaxing at the same time.

An accommodation space with a changing atmosphere

The accommodation space welcomes those entering the apartment with light natural stone flooring.

Wide sofas in light colors, which sit on a beige carpet and on it a large coffee table that combines wood, leather and iron - all face the wall, on which the wood carpentry unit climbs to the entire height of the space (six meters).

The unit is a focal point from anywhere in the space and highlights the high ceilings in the central space of the apartment.

The dining area / Yoav Peled, Studio Peled

Inside the carpentry unit is hidden the air conditioning system, the media system, in addition the television, a storage space and a fireplace for the winter are integrated into it.

"Fortunately, I was given a free hand to choose an unconventional plan and special and innovative materials for the various spaces," says Bashan.

The boldness in the choice of materials is evident in the dining area, facing the balcony, a blackened natural wooden table and chairs that combine metal and leather in camel tones.

Another exit to the balcony faces the kitchen, part of which is already visible at the entrance to the apartment and reveals an island made of spectacular Patagonian stone.

The kitchen cabinets, in blackened pine wood with a Virginia Black surface, highlight the island and make it another focal point in the apartment.

Next to the kitchen, two vertical lighting fixtures that come down from the ceiling, light the way to the accommodation unit and the guest services.

The bathroom, with a floor-standing sink unit made of natural stone, is covered with dark onyx-like porcelain tiles from floor to ceiling.

A view of the kitchen and the stairs

The high space in the public area of the apartment is further emphasized by floating elements of lighting.

The movement lighting sculpture creates a pleasant feeling of movement in the space, and the amount of light changes easily from strong lighting, suitable for entertaining to gentle and intimate lighting, which allows the couple to relax comfortably when they need quiet evenings alone.

The sculptural lighting element extends into the kitchen and towards the stairs to the second floor, allowing the couple and their guests to experience the high space from any point in it.

"It was important to me to create harmony and a strong connection between the spaces of the house, whether it is in material or in form, lighting or color," says Bashan.

An intimate space for the couple on the second floor

Light wooden stairs with a railing and cables stretched to the ceiling lead those who come to the top floor of the duplex.

Up here, the couple's master suite is tiled in light oak.

A brown bed, a beige carpet and blackened wooden chests, above which hanging reading lamps, together create a warm atmosphere for sleep, rest and intimacy.

Also in the suite: a light wooden console, an armchair with an iron finish and warm gray leather and a sculptural wooden rack by the Italian company Zanota for hanging clothes.

The bed in the room faces the wall of the bathroom which holds a surprise.

The smart glass that makes up the wall becomes opaque or transparent at the push of a button and preserves the open atmosphere in the upper space of the apartment.

Inside the bathroom, a huge shower contains a jet system from the Jessie company, imported by the Moody company, which was precisely adjusted to the couple's measurements. Floor-to-ceiling light onyx tiles, Virginia Black stone sinks and surfaces, and massive oak stools recall the The space is below and creates continuity between the two parts of the apartment.Concealed lighting and dehumidifiers in the mirrors complete the meticulous atmosphere in the bathroom.

A wall for shoes in the closet / Yoav Peled, Studio Peled

Back in the sleeping area, the TV is in a plaster ceiling with an electric lift.

When the couple is not watching TV, it goes back to the wall and disappears into it with the push of a button.

And of course, before going downstairs to welcome guests, the couple enjoys a walk-in closet made entirely of wood and a light oak parquet floor that continues from the bedroom.

Here, in the walk-in closet, the couple will dress and get ready, with a mirror on the entry wall and an impressive floor-to-ceiling wall designed for an especially large collection of shoes.

Now, the evening can begin.

Police clash with protesters in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem at weekly Saturday night rallies

A nti-government protesters blocked major roads and scuffled with police in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem Saturday evening during weekly protests demanding new elections and an immediate hostage deal.

Interrupting traffic has become routine for anti-government demonstrators in Tel Aviv over the past few weeks. But Saturday marked the first time since October 7 that protesters in Jerusalem blocked the intersection at Paris Square, after speeches from family members of hostages held in Gaza.

Police quickly responded with force in both cities, dispersing the dozens of demonstrators blocking roads with horses, water cannons and physical removal, though they made only a few arrests.

In Jerusalem, protests began as usual outside the President’s Residence, where hundreds of demonstrators, activists and speakers with the protest group Safeguarding our Shared Home demanded new elections.

Tovah Sheleg, one of the protest organizers, criticized the government and accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies of fomenting chaos in every corner of Israeli life.

“Wherever you look, there is chaos. This is a result of policy. In fact, the chaos is the policy,” she said, demanding that the government “return its mandate to the people.”

In a loud bellow, screenwriter and reservist Beni Barbash warned against choosing the “path of Netanyahu and his government,” which he said will “lead to an abyss of corruption, degeneration and destruction.”

“I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse; choose life so that you and your offspring will live,” he said, citing Jewish scripture. “The choice, as always in Judaism, is in our hands. Elections now because of the war. Elections now, despite the war.”

The demonstrators in Jerusalem also heard from ultra-Orthodox rabbi Bezalel Cohen, founder of the Chachmei Lev Yeshiva, who called for Haredi leaders to begin encouraging their communities to enlist to “defend the people and the country, out of a sense of partnership and brotherhood.”

Cohen spoke in the wake of the government’s sidelining of a plan for Haredi enlistment, presented last month by war cabinet member Benny Gantz and observer Gadi Eisenkot.

Haredi men of military age have been able to avoid the draft for decades by enrolling for study in yeshivas and obtaining repeated one-year service deferrals until they reach the age of military exemption.

After hearing from speakers, protesters marched without police confrontation to Paris Square, adjacent to Netanyahu’s official residence. There, family members of the hostages spoke to the crowd, publicly urging the government to reach a deal as soon as possible to bring their loved ones home after 162 days of captivity.

Evgenia Kozlov, the mother of Russian-Israeli Andrey Kozlov , who was kidnapped by Hamas while working as a security guard at the Supernova rave on October 7, spoke in Russian to the crowd alongside a Hebrew translator about how since the Hamas attack, she has done everything in her power to rescue her son.

“My life was ruined,” she said. “I don’t know Hebrew, I get help from my friend, Google Translate and Google Maps.”

“Five months have passed, people are starting to forget, the wind has destroyed our posters… people are continuing with their lives… but we are still living in October 7,” Kozlov continued.

Mai Alvini-Peri, the grandson of 79-year-old hostage Chaim Peri , has quickly become a regular speaker at the hostage families protest in Jerusalem. He closed out this week’s rally in a speech rife with stinging criticism of Netanyahu’s right-wing government.

“Another week we’re here, what fun,” he said wryly to the crowd. “Is this fun for you?”

“I don’t have anything more to say… It’s insane that we’ve had to protest for two weeks even, let alone half a year,” he continued.

“They [the government] hear us and they know, and they don’t care, and we know they don’t care. We know that this war has no goals; this war itself is their goal. The government of Israel prefers to kill Gazan civilians rather than saving Israeli civilians,” he said.

After speeches ended, a group of protesters endeavored to block the junction adjacent to Paris Square in the capital, sitting in the middle of the road while chanting: “There is no routine until there is a hostage deal.”

Before confronting the protesters sitting on the ground, police went to a group of reporters and photographers standing across from the demonstration and shoved them onto the sidewalk.

Roni Green Shaulov, a reporter for Ynet, tweeted that despite showing his press ID to “every officer that crossed his path,” he was still met with violence.

“I don’t often criticize the police during protests, but today I was hit too much, and too systematically, for me to keep it to myself,” he said.

Only after clearing the road of reporters did law enforcement begin to haul protesters off the road one by one, at times flinging them to the ground.

Mounted policemen at the scene in Jerusalem refrained from getting involved in dispersing the protesters blocking the road. Two protesters were arrested, according to a police spokesperson.

“Police pushed violators to the sidewalk in order to allow the continued movement of vehicles at the intersection and to restore order to the place,” tweeted the Israel Police following the clashes.

Converging on Begin Street

In Tel Aviv, the two separate weekly rallies — one calling for a hostage deal, one for new elections — converged on Begin Street where some protesters blocked off the northern part of the road, lighting bonfires, deploying smoke grenades, and blowing horns, which eventually led to clashes with police.

Demonstrators chanted: “He who abandoned them, must return them,” referring to Netanyahu, and “all of them, now!” — a call for the release of the 134 hostages in Hamas captivity.

The Times of Israel witnessed one demonstrator being arrested as protesters began marching northward on Begin Street.

Later in the night, a number of protesters managed to make a break for the Ayalon Highway, with no initial response from police, and sit on the asphalt, partially blocking the road but allowing for traffic to pass through the left lane.

Police soon began to disperse the demonstration with a water cannon while attempting to keep it from moving southward on the highway.

For the first time in two weeks, officers brought horses to assist them in dispersing the protest.

Just one protester was arrested at the Tel Aviv demonstration, according to the Israel Police.

Travelmath provides an online time zone converter for places all over the world. You can enter airports, cities, states, countries, or zip codes to find the time difference between any two locations. The calculator will automatically adjust for daylight saving time (DST) in the summer. You can use it as a meeting planner or a scheduler to find the best time to make international phone calls. World time zones have a positive or negative offset computed from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC has uniform seconds defined by International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds announced at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. The tz database or zoneinfo database uses the closest city, rather than the more common Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones in the United States. Countries often change their daylight saving rules, so please help us stay current by letting us know if you find any pages that need updates.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.

The plane was one hour late cause they were doing some reparations with us on the plane no mention I was in the first seat and the door was open the entire time with 8 degrees! The plane was totally dirty no mention old ! The staff was nice but no put together, the attention to details and passenger experience is missing and i always travel first !!! Is better the lounge than the plane! KLM/air France every details is taken care maybe you need a creative creator or experience client need asap was terrible and not memorable for the price that I payed very dissatisfied

Boarding super slow with people allowed to linger in aisles

We flew early evening on New Year's Eve. Our plane was less than half full... Great for the passenger experience -- not so much for the airline lol. Comfortable, spacious, smooth flight -- and early arrival!

First time travel in economy and the worst experience I ever had ! Shame on paying 600 dollars to be in a tuna can ! Service was terrible no even water no even class no even matters your flight attendants were lazy and sloppy very bad experience! After all these years traveling in first and once I try this cause I need to go to a destination for an emergency wow shame on you !

Really impressive staff at airport and on plane, especially given how busy it was

The upgrade was a pleasant surprise and I was sooooo tired of traveling these days. 10/10 just for that

El al is the best choice for flights to Israel.

Delayed as always, very dirty and old airplane. Not very friendly staff. Just a sandwich for a 5 hours very expensive flight.

The crew was great, the seats were comfortable, food was a sandwich , but very tasty and the ElAl new on board through WIFI was good. Thank you EL AL for improving

Amazing airport security, and the time of war. Keeping up the excellent service in adverse time

Best responsive crew ever Miri has been amazing to take care of my special unfortunate needs with efficiency and kindness Her and El Al team are 👍👍👏 And all the young persons in the El Al team were top notch and with everybody Great experience , no hesitation to book a El Al flight and the Dreamliner is really a dream of comfort and modernity

the airplane was new and nice. the crew and the food was so so

It’s the last time I would use this airline

The crew, the flight boarding perfect. It was a nn EL AL plane, but it was OK but inside it was a zoo.

Passengers would not take their assigned seats. Discussed with the crew, which led to 30 minutes delay before take off. During the flight many people were standing in the aisle, chatting to each other, shouting through the airplane. It was such an unpleasant flight!

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Oh my god! For an13 hour flight they serve you food just one time. Also don’t be thirsty they give you a little small cup of soda to drink. They seem like their goal is to feed you one so they don’t have to be bothered with you. It quite surprise for such a long flight there are several times to eat at least three and the food was well lackluster. The food and lack of offering drinks which were always hot no ice provided.

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

The 787 economy was a disaster for long haul. The space was too little compared to 777 or 747. Also the extremely low tray table behind the seat made any dining effort a nightmare. However, the movies were up to date, and the food taste was good, despite of terrible serving process caused by small space.

A little bit more comfort. It’s tight space around the seats. But all else is great and a smooth flight!

0ur assigned seats were given to other individuals when we boarded the plane. We were given new boarding passes with new seats all the way at the back of the plane. The reason given to us was that there were issues with the seats. We found out that there were no issues, and someone else's were seated on those.

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Very bad , airplain had problem with engines , had to evacuate, had a delay on my trip for almost 4 hours , lost my rental car in london..

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

Missed this flight due to delays from my previous flight

Easy peasy. Crew was great. Take-off and landing nice anc chill (good job by the pilot). Thank you UA!

The plane was delayed coming in and on the tarmac. I was coming from another flight so it made for a very long day. The stewardess kept trying to slam the overhead bins closed and I was worried that she had damaged my new luggage. They ran out of snacks and lccdsddd me a hummus box which was nice. It took them a very long time to pick up the garbage so I could not go to the washroom and had little time. To prepare for disbarment. The TV system was hard to control from the armrest and picture wasn’t clear. The crew did apologize several times for the lateness. It took the Denver airport an unusually long time to de-ice the plane.

Another late flight from United. We never got the exact reason why. When we got on the plane, the staff seemed to spend a very long time just milling around in the front of the plane. I also never figured out why the door to the cockpit was open for so long prior to leaving. All in all just a poor performance again from United. There is a reason we did not choose United for the international legs of this recent trip, overall dissatisfaction.

The flight was delayed by 4 hours !!!!! It was very uncomfortable , and they told us only one our before departure

pleased with overall experienced, but seats in coach are tight.

Don't often sit in 1st class. Our experience was great.

The 2 hour delay was frustrating but our crew did a great job getting us out quickly and keeping communication especially with the people who had connecting flights

It was right on time and crew were very courteous

So i was checked in for the seat number 40K. Unfortunately my seat was not able to recline which end up having very uncomfortable 15 hours flight.

Lack of information. No meal for a 6hr international flight that departs during dinner time

American always delays flight so it stressful getting the next connection

Food was very bad, eg noodle dish that could have hardly cost more than $1 plus a dry piece of bread a sad salad and a fig bar. Entertainment was also disappointing, mediocre movies and Tv shows and barely any classical music.

Flight was 2 1/2 hours late and information at the gate was inaccurate and inconsistent with online data.

Nothing really nondescript, the flight attendants were friendly and helpful.
