Fearless Vampire Killers return after six-year hiatus
Beccles alternative five-piece Fearless Vampire Killers have announced their return today, following last Friday’s sold out show at Camden’s Black Heart under the pseudonym After The Flames . The band have also announced forthcoming new music in the form of their brilliantly ambitious double A-Side Something Terminal , due 1 April via Silent Cult Records. Pre-save here: https://found.ee/fvk
“ Something Terminal is a love letter to the band we were, a final acknowledgment of all our quirks and contradictions ”, explains co-vocalist Laurence Beveridge, “ We want to take our listeners on a journey, both lyrically and musically, through our history, and eventually our hopes for the future. The title track is expansive, perhaps a little indulgent, but truly in the spirit of what makes Fearless Vampire Killers so special. It’s a showcase of all the styles we’ve amassed over the years; the melodic synths, crushing riffs, the stripped back piano led theatrics ”.
Something Terminal will be the band’s first release since 2015’s EP ‘ Bruises ’, capturing their penchant for dark theatrics, soaring melodies and unpredictable musicality. The title track boldly sits just under nine minutes and is a representation of the ups and downs of Fearless Vampire Killers ’ turbulent journey, with ultimate focus on new beginnings. Delicate contrasts with it’s anthemic stomp, searing riffs and instantly grabbing chorus – surefire set to be a crowd pleaser.
Fearless Vampire Killers formed in 2008, their gnarly blend of punk, emo and alternative rock stemming from a melting pot of influences; Queen, My Chemical Romance, Iron Maiden, Green Day, David Bowie and Danny Elfman to name a few. Hailing from Beccles, they made a move to the big smoke and spent years crammed into a cramped two-bedroom flat in North London. Every available moment working was spent working on music, designing and printing their own merch, editing music videos, creating their own social network, writing tie-in novels to flesh out the world behind their songs. With ambitious eyes far too big for their stomachs, they made biting off more than they could chew the only way to eat.
After years of honing their skills on many stages (many that could questionably be described as a stage…), they began venturing all around the UK to build and nurture one of the most engaging fan bases any independent band has ever seen. Live highlights include countless sold out headline runs, Download, Warped Tour UK , and a myriad of support slots to the likes of Black Veil Brides, Enter Shikari and Escape The Fate .
Combining their extensive tour schedule with two colossal albums under their belts, Militia Of The Lost (2012) and Unbreakable Hearts (2014), Fearless Vampire Killers were going from strength to strength on the surface. However carrying the load of running everything themselves behind the closed doors of their cramped two-bed flat, the band grew fatigued and disbanded in 2016.
Fast forward to 2022, and after much soul searching Fearless Vampire Killers return with a new fire in their bellies. “ We’ve realised that creating together is in the makeup of who we are as friends ”, explains co-vocalist Kier Kemp, “ We used to make films as kids and things just weren’t the same without something to work on together. So I guess in that way Fearless Vampire Killers doing more was inevitable. I don’t think that will ever change ”.

The death pop band, Fearless Vampire Killers, are currently on the “Revel Without A Cause Tour” with William Control and Davey Suicide. While they’re on this tour, they will be writing an exclusive blog for us. You can check out the band’s first entry, after the break.
FV Prologue For anyone who by chance or unfounded curiosity has stumbled upon this blog I think a small introduction is in order. My name is Drew Woolnough, I’m the bassist in a band known to the world, and the elsewhere, as Fearless Vampire Killers, or FVK if you can’t be bothered to twist your tongue around that lengthy titlette. We’ve described ourselves in the past as ‘Death Pop,’ ‘Puss-puss metal’ and ‘Danny Elfman Diarrhea’ but I think just a ‘Rock’ band may suffice. This, and the subsequent blogs, will chart our journey across the Atlantic where we will embark on our first ever US tour in support of the Gothfather William Control and Davey Suicide. Will it be all that we’ve ever dreamed of? Will the “sidewalks” be paved with gold and littered with screaming girls? Or will the reality just involve the five of us gaining a lot of fast-food-fed weight? Let’s find out shall we…
DAY 1 – Mid-Air Media and Hotel Hostility 6:30AM. We rouse ourselves from an all too brief slumber as the airport beckons. Cue last minute stress as groggily we sling some clothes on and try to figure out what we’ve forgotten to pack (incidentally for me it was my belt – a minor casualty in the grand scheme of the cock-ups that could have been). We stumble down the road to the tube station with our heavy suitcases loaded with effects pedals, leads and whatever gear wouldn’t fit in the guitar case weighing down the opposite arm. The tube journey whisks by in a stuffy blur and before we know it we’re checking our bags and getting our crotches cupped by airport security. Luckily no one was packing a foil-wrapped, genitalia-enhancing cucumber or else that could have been awkward…er. After noshing down on a tasty Pret we board the plane and set about taking advantage of the in-flight movie selection. The smart play would have been to try and get some sleep on the flight at a strategic point on the flight to counter the inevitable jetlag… But being film and TV addicts I don’t think any one of us took our eyes off the blurry screens in front of us for the 11 hours we spent on board. Who can argue with a ‘This Is the End’/’The World’s End’ double bill 3,000 ft. in the air followed by Batman: Subzero? Not a sausage. So after hours of film heaven (plus a little bit of Veep) we touched down on American tarmac and breathe in the sweet scent of freedom and saturated fats.
“We are Fearless Vampire Killers from the UK, you must be the USA.”
First port of call was to get the van that we would call home for the next month which proved to be much more difficult than we’d imagined. Confusion over insurance meant that we spent hours in limbo at the car hire agency before we could get our motor. When we finally got everything sorted we thought the worst of our luck was behind us. What idiotic boobs we were. By this point all six of us (five band members – myself, Laurence, Kier, Luke and Shane – and our merch girl Lucy) were shattered and just wanted to get some food and go to bed. We pulled into the slightly grim looking block that was our hotel for the night eager to check-in and soak up a good old slice of Amerciana atmos. But upon entering our hotel room we realised that something, was to say the least, amiss. Firstly there was a broken light – no biggy right? Could happen to anyone I hear you say? Well, keep reading it gets better. With just the light emanating from a Samsung Galaxy S4, we examined the broken door lock and cracked windows with unease. Venturing deeper into this cavern of false-comfort we came across a table covered in, shall we say “illegal substances.” It became swiftly clear that this was not a place for six naïve Brits to spend two nights. A quick conference with the hotel owner that went a little something like this:
Kier: Basically I want to know honestly, are we safe here?
Owner: [awkward pause] No.
Led us on our merry way to find a safer haven where drug platters and shankings weren’t included in the price of the room. Thank God for the Days Inn.
DAY 2 – Fruit Loops and Frisco Free Fruit Loops. Free Waffles. Free-form jazz. Well maybe not the last one, but that is how we started our first full day in Amercia. On the first actual gig day of the tour we were wired and full of sugar ready to take on San Francisco in style. We set off early so that we could explore a little and be back at the venue – The DNA Lounge – in time for a bountiful delivery of gear and merchandise. But alas, it seemed our tour-teething-plop-luck wasn’t over yet as we spent the first part of our journey hounded by a homeless woman desperate to nab Kier’s wallet. So confident was she in her pickpocketing technique that it simply consisted of slowly reaching for the wallet whilst standing right in front of Kier in broad daylight. Maybe she was trying to pull some Derren Brown psychological-wizardy-shit. Who knows, but she needs practice if she’s going to succeed as a master thief.
A quick bite at Carls Jr. filled our bellies with little-to-no sustenance as we wandered the streets soaking up the atmosphere before heading back to the DNA Lounge. After a lot of waiting around in the sun we finally got to load our gear upstairs and see if it all still worked! The only transit-casualty was my jaguar bass guitar which decided to stop working after one of its flimsy little pickup buttons broke. Bane of my life that bass, but damn it sounds good. But everything else seemed to be in orange-sherbert order so it was gravy. We got to introduce ourselves to Davey Suicide and the guys and catch up with big Willy C and his boyz which was great. The local support band even revealed to me that downstairs Prince had recently played four shows over two nights and in fact it was his favourite venue to play in San Francisco. Being a massive fan of The Purple One this got me nicely hot under the collar and stoked to funk out onstage.
Now: onto the show. How did it feel, playing to a sea of brand new faces in a brand new country for the first time? Invigorating. That’s how baby. It teleported me back in time to those old ramshackle club shows on the outskirts of London we used to play when absolutely no-one knew who we were and had no prior preconceptions about who we were. We got up up on stage, cranked the volume up loud and tore through with all the energy we could muster. Fortunately, energy and excitement was in abundant supply and with a tongue in cheek and a twinkle beneath the eyeshadow we showed San Fran what we had to offer. Luckily folks seemed to enjoy it, y’know which is handy! The fact that some people even knew the words to some of the songs was amazing. Validated and re-invigorated we left the lounge with heads held high ready to rock the shit out of tomorrow.
DAY 3 – Love On The Rox With No Ice After another early start we shook ourselves awake and set off with our sights set on the home of all that is glitzy, glamorous and vacuous: Hollywood. Driving across California through the open, mountainous countryside was absolutely stunning the only problem is you can’t sleep when you’ve got such an amazing view outside your window (although I could be tempted away for a few episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm much to Laurence’s disappointment). Then before I knew it, there it was: The City of Angels. Cue the click- flash-whirr of everyone’s cameras and impromptu renditions of Weezer’s ‘Beverley Hills’ as we drove through that coveted locale. The fast-food tour of America continued as we sampled our first In ‘N Out Burger after several recommendations from our US tour partners. Unfortunately, though the price was as cheap as chips the food didn’t live up to the hype – our bellies were full but our hearts were not.
The Roxy is one of those venues that’s steeped in myth and mystique. To use an all-american analogy, it’s a venue that’s been deep-fried in the juices of legendary musical talent. Now we were going to get a chance prove our worth on that very same stage, no time to choke. But wandering down the Sunset strip in the boiling hot sun, fighting through the accumulative jetlag that thought was laying dorment in the back of my boiling brain. A quick (expensive) rum and coke at the famed Rainbow bar next door soon restored our spirits and cooled our sweaty brows.
Gig time loomed and nerves started to set in as we individually processed the importance of our first appearance at The Roxy. My “coping” technique was to pathetically succumb to my jetlag-weary body and crash out in the cramped backstage room. The show was tough as we were all feeling run down but we gave it all as ever and were again pleasantly surprised when we were greeted with a cracking crowd that were up for a good time as much as we were.
So you’ve just played your second show in America and you’re staying just down the road next to the House of Blues – time to party right? Nope, sleep took hold of priorities and much to that party animal inside of all of us’ dismay – we bailed on Hollywood.
DAY 4 – Chain on Target Roll out of bed into a Five Guys and stuff your face with some of the best burger and fries you’ve ever tasted. Check: Time to head to Anaheim and rock Chain Reaction to the ground. With a cracking night of sleep under our belts we were all back to our best and brightest dispositions and we were stoked to stomp out some rockin’ tunes later that evening. We arrived early as ever: FVK – consistently punctual, the least rock n roll personal attribute. So we took refuge in a giant Target, sipping Starbucks and chomping on donuts to while away the hours. Chain Reaction has a brilliant grimy vibe, it feels like a living breathing rock club. That may sound like a strange thing to say, but so many venues we’ve played over the years have little to no character to them. Sure they’re all shiny, clean and ipod-white with WiFi and running water that doesn’t stink of shit – but where’s the heart? Chain Reaction’s got heart and soul to boot. The show that night was an unpretentious (well, as unpretentious as we can be) affair and after a blitz-quick change over we jumped onstage, thrashed around for 30 mins, sang happy birthday to someone and jumped off dripping with sweat: Lovely stuff. In-between bopping around to deliciously dark tunes and chatting newly-friendly faces it was a great night and we left Anaheim in high spirits, tomorrow we would be celebrating in the city of the battle born…
DAY 5 – All These Things We Could Have Done We rose from our Hollywood Hotel and bid goodbye to the Chateau Marmont, the Troubador and any other landmark we passed on our way to the neon lights of Las Vegas. Another picturesque drive through untainted American countryside was sound tracked by The Killers’ opus ‘Sam’s Town’ to celebrate crossing the border into Nevada. Vegas is a curious place in the daylight, it hints at the tacky-charm that erupts after sunset but in no way prepares you for the explosion of colourful excess that awaits you in the heart of the strip.
We pulled up to the Hard Rock Hotel ready to scope out the Vinyl club that was nestled inside but the mythical artefacts of rock and roll history proved to be a distraction. Rhinestone Elton John baseball jumpsuits, phallic-plastic Prince guitars, Diamond Bowies and so much more lined the walls and even if 70% of it seemed to be Def Leppard memorabilia it was great to just walk around and bask in the glory of those pieces of rock history. This all set us in good stead for the show that night which was an absolute hoot-and-a-holler – A+ to everyone who came down early and got involved. With the show over and done with (in the most positive sense) we were free to enjoy the Vegas nightlife and with Wil wrapping up before 9pm: THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG AND WE WERE READY TO BOOGIE!
Unfortunately our night of debauchery didn’t quite take flight as we soon discovered that you can’t really “Do Vegas” without the dollar-dollar. Our $10 per diems couldn’t take us far when the cider flowed to the stinging price of $8. Ouch. But oh well, we took to the strip and took goofy photos in front of Caesar’s Palace and got excited playing the 1 cent slot machines (that don’t take less than a dollar bill – what the funk is that about?!). Luke stayed on to take one last sip of the nightlife with the Davey Suicide lads while the rest of us veered away from the glow of the strip, promising to one day return and paint it a new shade of red.
This concludes part 1 of this bassist’s tour diary. Thanks for reading, more to come soon…

Spotlight band: Fearless Vampire Killers are BACK!
March 12, 2022
What fans have hoped for, ever since the band split up five years ago, got confirmed yesterday – Fearless Vampire Killers are BACK!
A few weeks ago, a show was announced at the Black Heart in Camden Town, London. The band’s name was After The Flames. Soon after the announcements, there were first talks about this being a secret show of Fearless Vampire Killers. No one was sure, but there were certain signs. The show was sold-out pretty quick and hopes were high.
So…fast forward to yesterday night….and hopes were fulfilled – Fearless Vampire Killers are truly back!!!
By now the band’s Facebook page got updated and the band shared a video on their youtube page, where Kier Kemp (guitar and vocals) and Laurence Beveridge (guitar and vocals) talk about past, present, and future.
Fearless Vampire Killers always had a close connection to their fanbase. That seems to never have broken. Everyone, keep your eyes open for what’s about to come.
Meanwhile, check out some of their hits from a while back, like “Maeby”, “All Hallows Evil”, “Like Bruises” and “Neon At The Dance Floor”.

Band will also hit the road with Escape The Fate in early 2016
Fearless Vampire Killers have announced a March UK tour.
The alt-rockers recently finished their trek of Europe on the back of mini-album Bruises which was released in October , with the band calling it their “best material yet.”
Vocalist Keir Kemp said of the album: “ Bruises comes from the heart. It’s allowed us to explore a whole new side of the band commenting on the darker side of human nature. “It’s still dark, but much more frank. Our ability as musicians and songwriters has also developed.”
Before the headline dates, they’ll hit the road with Escape The Fate, New Years Day and Like A Storm in January.

The Fearless Vampire Killers or: Pardon Me, but Your Teeth Are in My Neck
1967, Comedy/Horror, 1h 47m
What to know
Critics Consensus
This uneven but amiable 1967 vampire picture is part horror spoof, part central European epic, and 100 percent Roman Polanski, whose signature sensibility colors every frame. Read critic reviews

Vampire hunter Professor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran) and his faithful assistant, Alfred (Roman Polanski), are traveling across Transylvania when they stop to rest at a suspicious-looking inn. That night, they witness the innkeeper's daughter, Sarah (Sharon Tate), being whisked away by Count von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne), an obvious vampire, and pursue him to his nearby castle. They break in, only to be invited to stay by the unfazed count, and plot to rescue Sarah and destroy their murderous host.

Critic Reviews for The Fearless Vampire Killers or: Pardon Me, but Your Teeth Are in My Neck
Audience reviews for the fearless vampire killers or: pardon me, but your teeth are in my neck.
First off Polanski is my favorite director yes three movies in my top 10 but this would not even come close to one of his great works. . I heard some critics say it's the perfect mix of comedy and horror, but really it's not either one if you want a vampire movie that has that perfect mix watch the original fright night. Now it wasn't completely dull yes I did laugh a lot at the beginning, but then It just went down. mainly because since you didn't care about the characters at all it was very hard to get into the story. This is definitely my least favorite Polanski film
Here's Polanski's take on classic vampire films with grains of gags and snow. The problem with this movie is very simple: it's uneven in trying to be a comedy and a Hammer homage; the comedy doesn't work; the homage to classic vampire movies only works, essentially, because of the scenery. I don't know what Polanski's intentions were but something was lost during filming because the end result is an unsatisfying, dull, and superfluous ninety minutes.
Polanski's vampire comedy is hilarious and cute. Polanski plays the sidekick in the movie, and he's a really good actor too. I really liked this movie, he has such a cool style and the story and characters are so funny. If you love vampire movies I highly recommend this one.
I really don't understand why Roman Polanski ever decided to make a vampire movie in this fashion. You'd think that with all of his mastery in suspense, he would produce a truly terrifying film. However, the result is little more than cheap physical comedy and corny dialogue. I would say that I blame that more on the writing, but it's not excusable from such an amazing director. Truly my least favorite Polanski film.

Vampire Weekend Did Not Make a ‘Doom and Gloom Record’
On its fifth album, suffused with thoughts of 20th-century New York City, indie-rock’s pop maximalists get noisier — but it’s a journey out of negativity into “something a little deeper.”

From the first seconds of Vampire Weekend’s new album, “Only God Was Above Us,” it’s clear that something has changed. “Ice Cream Piano” starts with hiss, buzz, feedback and a hovering, distorted guitar note — the opposite of the clean pop tones that have been the band’s hallmark. It’s the beginning of an album full of startling changes and wild sonic upheavals, all packed into 10 songs.
The new album, like all of Vampire Weekend’s work, is meticulous, self-conscious and awash in musical and verbal allusions — sometimes direct, sometimes cryptic. But it’s also a broad pendulum swing from its 2019 release, “Father of the Bride,” a leisurely, jam-band-influenced sprawl that ran nearly 58 minutes. “Only God Was Above Us,” the group’s fifth album, due April 5, is eight songs and 10 minutes shorter.
“With every album we have to push in two directions at once,” Ezra Koenig, Vampire Weekend’s singer and primary songwriter, said in a recent interview. “Sometimes that means we have to be poppier and weirder. Maybe with this record, it’s about both pushing into true maturity, in terms of worldview and attitude, but also pushing back further into playfulness. There’s a youthful amateurishness along with some of our most ambitious swings ever.”
Koenig, 39, described the new album’s sequence of songs as “a journey from questioning to acceptance, maybe to surrender. From a kind of negative worldview to something a little deeper.” Ultimately, he said, the LP is optimistic. “It’s not a doom and gloom record. And even if there’s songs where the narrator is trying to figure something out or feels confused, that’s not all. That’s part of the story — it’s not the thesis of the album that the world is dark and horrible.”
The album also exults in musical zingers, non sequiturs and startling off-grid eruptions. The songs often morph through multiple changes of tempo and texture, riffling unpredictably through indie-rock austerity, orchestral lushness, pop perkiness and hallucinatory electronic studio concoctions, like the cascade of wavery, overlapping piano lines in “Connect.” Where “Father of the Bride” had a folky openness, “Only God Was Above Us” is crammed with ideas that gleefully collide.
Ever analytical, Koenig mused that Vampire Weekend’s albums each reflected patron saints. He named Paul Simon for the band’s self-titled 2007 debut , Joe Strummer and Sublime for “Contra” from 2010, Leonard Cohen for “Modern Vampires of the City,” and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, along with Phish, for “Father of the Bride.” The new album, he said, may reflect a short-lived tour he didn’t get to see: the 1997 pairing of Rage Against the Machine and Wu-Tang Clan, which reached the cover of Rolling Stone .
“Distortion, heaviness, hardness,” Koenig said. “We were drawn toward those qualities on this record in a more direct way than ever before.”
Koenig spoke via video from his home in Los Angeles. Behind him — from the collection of his wife, the actress Rashida Jones — was a wall of photographs by the artist Taryn Simon from the project “Contraband” : bootleg DVD boxed sets that were confiscated by United States Customs, arrayed in Minimalistic formations. Like Vampire Weekend’s songs, they neatly frame disruptive material.
Vampire Weekend has always had two distinct aspects — its fastidious album work and its frisky live shows — and may soon have three. (More on that later.) The central one is the music the band constructs in the studio, which is minutely tweaked and painstakingly considered. Vampire Weekend’s songs uphold a long-established tradition of concise pop songwriting. But even as it delineates clear verses and choruses, the band pushes every other parameter.
“With some types of art, you probably have to put a lot of thought into how to create layers of meaning,” Koenig said. “Songs are, by their nature, relatively short. They have repetitive hooks. Then if you want to go maximalist and fill it with production details and arrangements, you can. And if you want the lyrics to push out into some weird place, you can.”
Yet the basics of pop songwriting keep the band’s experimentation grounded. “You can zig and zag from verse one to verse two to verse three, but you keep coming back to the same chorus,” he added. “But now it’s recontextualized by the second verse. I think all that stuff is built into the format. It’s this great populist art form where you can get really out there but the structure holds it together.”
Beginning with the 2013 album “Modern Vampires of the City,” Vampire Weekend’s studio output has increasingly been a collaboration between Koenig and the producer and multi-instrumentalist Ariel Rechtshaid, who has worked on hits with Madonna , Usher , Haim and others.
“I’ve been part of making things that sound expensive and beautiful,” Rechtshaid said in a video interview from his Los Angeles studio. “But on this record, when the songs were at a certain stage, we were just, like, ‘This sounds exciting to us.’ It wasn’t a gimmick. It wasn’t like, ‘Here’s the decision to make something that feels noisy or dirty or distorted.’ It’s that the songs were emoting properly.”
The band and Rechtshaid have been working on — and reworking — most of the new album’s songs since 2020. Two tracks, “Gen-X Cops” and “The Surfer,” originated much earlier. The untamed slide-guitar line of “Gen-X Cops” came from Brooklyn sessions in 2012, while “The Surfer” includes much-altered elements of a song Koenig had begun writing with Rostam Batmanglij , who left Vampire Weekend in 2016.
“Sometimes you get lucky and the music, the production, the lyrics and the performance all come together and it fits on the record you’re working on,” Koenig said. “And sometimes, you know there’s something special about it, but you have to put it aside and just let time do its thing.”
Although Vampire Weekend’s members have settled in Los Angeles, its new album is suffused with thoughts of 20th-century New York City. Those were the decades before Vampire Weekend got started at Columbia University in 2006. “Weird, half-baked memories and pictures and thoughts and family history,” Koenig said. “That’s the version of New York that’s floating through this record.”
The opening tracks ponder conflict and disillusionment. “Classical” finds bitter power struggles hidden in history, noting “how the cruel becomes classical in time.” In “Connect,” the singer wonders, “Is it strange I can’t connect?,” mingling the personal and the online. The album eventually concludes with “Hope,” the longest song in Vampire Weekend’s catalog, a stately, eight-minute litany of disasters and injustices — “The sentencing was overturned/The killer freed, the court adjourned” — with a guardedly reassuring refrain: “I hope you let it go.”
The album title comes from a New York Daily News headline shown in the album’s cover photograph , which was shot by Steven Siegel in 1988 at a subway graveyard, inside a subway car turned sideways — an image that looks surreal but needed no special effects. One song, “Mary Boone,” borrows the name of the SoHo gallery owner who was hugely influential in the 1980s.
Another, “Prep-School Gangsters,” is named after a 1996 story in New York magazine about privileged students dabbling in the drug trade. “The prep-school gangster — these are the people who run the vast majority of institutions,” Koenig said. “It’s very possible, especially in America, especially in New York, that every now and then the prep-school gangster’s grandfather was once the disadvantaged youth, and that the disadvantaged youth’s grandson will be the prep-school gangster. And here they are in this brief moment of time, meeting together.”
“The Surfer” begins with a reference to “Water Tunnel 3,” a project to bring water to New York City from a reservoir in Yonkers. It has been under construction since 1970 and is far from complete.
“There’s that eerie but beautiful feeling that underneath this, the most populous city in America, there is an almost century-long project happening, where people are burrowing through the Earth,” Koenig said. “And then, classic New York stuff that everybody wants to talk about, the bagels and the pizza — it’s so good because of the water. Where does the water come from? It comes from upstate New York, far away. How does it get into somebody’s tap on the Lower East Side?
“It’s always been a slight obsession of mine,” he continued. “I like that idea about the underground. I don’t mean culturally. I mean just literally what’s underground.”
Vampire Weekend will soon be resurfacing to tour — a job far removed from the band’s finely detailed studio work. Real-time performing used to be a fraught prospect for such a perfectionist group. “I would hear other musicians talk about, ‘Oh man, you know, touring is tough, but then once you get onstage, all your worries go away and you’re just connecting with the audience,’” Koenig recalled. “And I’d think, ‘What are these people talking about? That’s when the worries start.’”
For its 2019 tour, Vampire Weekend expanded its stage lineup to seven musicians and vocalists, opening up more possibilities in the songs and relieving some of the virtuosic pressures. “Now, when we get together to rehearse, there’s a youthful, playful vibe,” Koenig said. “We’re always coming up with ideas that make us laugh.” The full band has been practicing since November for a summer tour it will preview on April 8 — performing a midday concert in Austin in the path of the full solar eclipse and sharing a free livestream .
Along with recording and touring, Vampire Weekend may soon unveil a third facet. Chris Baio, the band’s bassist, and Chris Tomson, its drummer, did separate video interviews from the studio space they share in Los Angeles — a converted medical office where Vampire Weekend started meeting in summer 2020 for weekly, Covid-distanced jam sessions, playing in separate rooms and recording hundreds of hours of music.
“The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”
Baio said, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”
Those sessions may lead to the emergence of a new trio that happens to have the same members as Vampire Weekend, performing unreleased material.
“We kind of have an imaginary back story for that band,” Koenig added. “It was a band that came out around 1989, 1990, and they were a little bit too punky for the jam scene and a little bit too jammy for the punk scene. And there’s a little bit of the Minutemen in there. The truth is, this is very premature because that band is still hashing out its sound. I don’t want to say too much.”
Could the unnamed trio open shows on Vampire Weekend’s tour? “That has been discussed,” Koenig said dryly.
“We’re just trying to create a sound that we’ve never quite heard before,” he had noted earlier. “That’s what keeps us going.”
An earlier version of this article misstated Ezra Koenig’s age. He is 39, not 40.
