4 Ways to Visit Santa Safely From Home

Looking for a virtual and totally safe way to see Santa Claus this year? You have options.

santa visit your house

Christmas just isn't Christmas without a visit to the man in red—but thanks to 2020, that traditional sit-on-Santa's-lap thing probably isn't happening right now. Some malls pulled their Santas this year, while others put in safety measures—with Santas masked or shielded, or visiting with kids from six feet away. (Which probably makes Santa Claus a little more palatable to kids who were nervous about him in years past!)

But as with everything else this year, the safest option is to just stay home. Fortunately, through the magic of technology you have several options to bring the magic of a virtual Santa visit (and get that all-important naughty or nice verdict) right to a screen near you.

Book a free virtual Santa visit

T-Mobile can help you make an appointment for a free Zoom Santa visit with one of its Santas (including Spanish-language and ASL options)—and you don't even have to be a T-Mobile customer. Slots open up at noon ET at SantaCalling.com , so get there early to get your choice of slots.

Sittercity is booking 50-minute free virtual sessions, where your kids will interact with Santa and kids from up to eight other families (and you might just get a much-needed break to unwind).

Sam's Club members can sign up for a free five-minute video call with Santa , which includes a downloadable video and photo so you can share the moment with your family.

Be a Santa in disguise

If you have a late-model iPhone and a holly-jolly voice, Enchant Santa Calls is an app that uses the same tech you use for Animoji/Memoji to let you play Santa via a video call. You can pick how your Santa looks and what background you want to use, and both you and your call recipient need to have the app. It's free for the phone call receiver, but the Santa will pay $5.99 for two calls, or $24.99 if you want to play Santa for 20 calls.

Try a totally virtual Santa

AskSanta.com , which partners with the American Heart Association, offers a free virtual Santa that can answer a lot of your kids' questions (including reassuring them that Christmas isn't canceled this year due to COVID).

Get a Santa shoutout

Cameo offers an array of Santas you can hire to send a personalized message to your kids—including a St. Nick from the Santa Claus Hall of Fame. And if you'd like a more risque Santa experience for adults, you can hire the Stripping Santa or Gilbert Gottfried dressed as Santa.

BRINGING THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS INTO YOUR HOME

MAGICAL PRE-CHRISTMAS HOME VISITS FROM SANTA CLAUS Gift your little believers the memory of a lifetime when Santa comes walking through your front door with a toy sack of presents. Invite relatives, friends, neighbors and the children for a surprise visit from an authentically costumed REAL BEARDED SANTA CLAUS.

Ask each parent to bring a dozen cookies for a “Cookie Party", have a "Pizza Party", a Gourmet Dinner Party or a Pajama Pancake  Breakfast  is lots of Fun

Santa’s SURPRISE VISIT will bring smiles, laughter and even a few tears of JOY along with the magic of Christmas into your homes and hearts. The children will believe the “real” Santa visited, even a few adults may believe!

LOOK AT ALL THE MAGIC THAT IS INCLUDED!

*ARRIVAL: Each parent should select a small gift the child has asked for. Host will meet Santa on arrival with all the gifts, which should be no larger than a shoebox (so they will all fit in toy sack) and with each child’s name.

*GRAND ENTRANCE: Imagine, when Santa enters through the front door, ringing sleigh bells and the children see Santa with his toy pack over his shoulder! WOW! cameras ready for photos of those excited children, the looks on those little faces, this is a TRULY PRICELESS moment.

* CEREMONIAL LIGHTING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE: When Santa arrives the tree lights should be off. Santa asks a child to read a special Elf tree lighting poem. With the help of a little Elf magic stardust floating, twinkling down the tree, the lights are magically switched on, creating a magical inspiring moment, along with a chorus of awes.....

*SANTA'S BOOK OF GOOD KIDS: Santa’s Book has 1,000's of names along with a page with the names of each of the children present! Santa reads each child’s name, after parents verify each child has been good, each receives a Red Ribbon, "I Am Listed In Santa's Book Of Good Kids"

*SANTA READS/TELLS CHRISTMAS STORIES : Santa may ask a child to sit on his knee and help Santa read and tell stories from Santa's Story Book!

*SANTA VISITS WITH EACH CHILD : Santa pulls a wrapped gift from the toy sack and calls out the name. Each child sits on Santa’s knee to share their wish list while personal photos are taken. Each child receives their wrapped gift and selects a small gift from Santa's special Toy Gift Box.

UNWRAPPING THE PRESENTS: When all the children have visited with Santa and received their gift, they all open at the same time, offering another awesome photo moment with the pure excitement of children.

*PHOTOS WITH SANTA: Time is for photos with siblings, families, friends, neighbors and a group photo of all of the children! After all photos have been taken, the presents have all been opened and the magic is slipping away, it is time for Santa's exit to a chorus or two of "Jingle Bells"

MAGICAL PRE-CHRISTMAS HOME VISITS are designed and planned to provide the complete magical Santa experience for the children. Santa explains to the children he is visiting them before Christmas this year, because they have been especially good this year.

SANTA is booking now....Magical Pre-Christmas Home Visits start the day after Thanksgiving, weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons and evenings all the way up to Christmas Eve.  Fees for Magical Visits are $150-$225 based on weekday or weekend and the specific time slot! Home Parties and Visits

Our Christmas Season offerings include a hybrid of Live and Virtual visits (recorded video messages and live, interactive video calls). Everyone here at the North Pole wants to keep your family and friends healthy. Santa True is fully vaccinated and would be happy to be part of your safe seasonal events

With some thoughtful event preparation and planning, let’s make this a Christmas to be remembered!

Outline of an In-Person Visit

santa visit your house

An In-Person Visit from Santa True starts at approximately 30 minutes at the location of your choosing (home, rec room, restaurant, office) . Santa makes a Grand Entrance , has a Meet and Greet time, then it’s time for some fun Photos . The children can Tell Santa what they want , there’s time for Question and Answer with Santa , and some Singing and Storytelling . Finally, if there are Gifts (provided by the hosts that Santa has hidden in his gift bag) , these are distributed at the end. Everyone does a Big Countdown and gifts are opened as Santa makes his exit. (This helps keep the children from running out to “see the reindeer.”)

To secure the visit, we put together an event contract with all the specifics of the visit. Your date and time has a “soft hold” on our calendar until the contract comes back by the contract deadline. A visit starts at $300, with $150 non-refundable retainer required to save the date/time on our calendar. (Longer events or Corporate events are priced differently.)

When we have received payment, then we will send you the event questionnaire. This is how you provide the secret information Santa would know, as well as any access information needed (like security code to come into a gate, restrictions about parking, or where the gifts for children will be hidden before Santa comes in).

Please email us at [email protected] if you’d like to find a day and time on our calendar for a Home Visit.

  • Our 2022 Calendar is almost fully booked with weekends having the fewest options available.
  • If you are open to a weekday visit, there are more options still remaining.
  • There are no in-person visits available outside of Southern California

If an in-person visit cannot be scheduled, please take a look at our Virtual Visit options.

How To Make the Best Visit

Having Santa come to your home is a wondrous thing for young and old alike. Here are some quick tips to making this the very best party or visit possible.

  • Make certain Santa has an assigned contact who will have their phone on (and charged), just in case. This contact person should check their phone regularly.
  • If there are any pets who might be over-excited by a big guy in a fur-trimmed suit, it might be best for them to relax elsewhere, in a closed room.
  • You will want to have all your cameras and devices ready and charged.
  • Where should Santa sit for photos? Well, Santa’s suit is pretty warm, so not too close to fireplaces. It is also helpful to seat Santa away from large reflective surfaces (like mirrors and glass doors). We don’t want flash bounce to ruin your pictures.
  • Santa will probably need a helper or two. Santa True will send you information on just how those assistants can help out.
  • Any finances are best dealt with beforehand and “off stage.” But if there is any balance or payment due, the best way to handle this is to put the money into a Christmas Card and hand it to Santa, as he is leaving.
  • Coordination is important. It could be awkward for Santa to show up in the middle of a meal or when someone has just run to the store for some more eggnog. Please have someone who will bring everyone together, to be ready when Santa shows up.
  • In many people’s minds, Santa usually comes down the chimney. But if he’s arriving by car, you need to have a specially reserved parking spot for him. An easy way to do this is to have one of the cars in the driveway pulled all the way back (closest to the street). When Santa arrives, the Helper pulls this car forward and Santa pulls in behind him. Make certain Santa has all the security information, if you live in a gated community.
  • Speaking of cars and reindeer, it’s not unusual for children to want to follow Santa out. Be ready to have a distraction to pull the kids away, after you hear him call out, “Happy Christmas to All, and to All a Good Night!”
  • Seating is important. A sturdy, straight back, dining room chair will often do fine. You can decorate around it and even put it next to your Christmas Tree. But people will need to have easy access around it. And we don’t want any gifts to be trampled.
  • If there are any people with Special Needs, make certain Santa knows. If someone is in a wheel chair or bedridden, Santa can easily go to them. Or he may need help if the person uses ASL, etc. When children are present, there must be an adult serving as the child wrangler remaining with Santa at all times.
  • If Santa is handing out gifts for you, put them in a heavy-duty plastic trash bag. Santa True will transfer them into his own bag. Write the names in bold ink, on the wrapping paper itself. Tags fall off all the time. Santa will ask the helpers to help him hand out the presents, and to help pronounce the names if needed. If there are a lot of gifts, Santa may recruit some elves to bring them in. Please let Santa know if there are any special issues before he offers to hand out candy canes.

Testimonials

Customers Say It Best

We, at Visit With Santa, are proud of our dedication to help maintain the magic of the Christmas season. We strive to provide a unique, memorable, and magical experience for each and every family. That is why we continue to be the best virtual Santa visit company out there. But, don't just take our word for it, here are some words from some of our visitors.

Family enjoying a visit

This evening we let the kids know we would get to video chat with Santa. They insisted on getting dressed up and the excitement began to build. Santa spoke calmly and with joy as he shared the things he knew about my children. We were unable to see Santa in person this year and this interaction surpassed our expectations. We can’t wait to get the video and revisit the magic our kids felt. We will be opting for this experience again next year. If your child is nervous, shy, or finds in person experiences difficult, or if like us, you don’t find waiting in line with active children a fun experience, this is a great option!

Family enjoying a visit

We had the chance to visit with Santa today, it was seriously magical. My middle child was questioning the validity of Santa, but now her mind is blown. Santa knew sooo much about her and her brothers! I would highly recommend this to everyone. So easy, user friendly, you don't have to leave the house and there are no line ups!

Family enjoying a visit

This was the most magical experience for our kids!!! Seeing Santa and being able to talk to him one on one was amazing!! Our kids loved every second of their call, they have talked about it every day since our call and already can’t wait to do it again!!!

How to Guarantee Santa Visits Your Home this Christmas

We have all been there: You leave a half-eaten cookie and an empty glass of milk on the coffee table to convince others that Santa made a late-night visit to your home. But that trick works, uh, about once. We all need to up our Santa game!

We’ve put together a few clever ideas that don’t just prove that Santa stopped by on Christmas Eve – it proves he moved in, and he’s going to stay as long as we want! (Don’t worry – he won’t eat much.) Whether you want to showcase Ol’ St. Nick inside your home or out, we’ll show you how to get him to stick around with these Santa-centric digital decorations.

AtmosFX has four unique digital decoration collections that feature Santa Claus as the featured character, sometimes as live action, and sometimes as an animated character. They are:

  • Santa’s Visit (Animated Santa)
  • Night Before Christmas (Live-Action Santa)
  • Santa’s Workshop (Live-Action Santa)
  • Santa’s Sleigh Ride (Animated Santa)

All of these digital decorations can be used in a multitude of ways – in windows, on walls, and on TVs, computer monitors and tablets. Some also work extremely well on AtmosFX’s Hollusion Projection Material or 3DFX Forms. Even “Moon Mode”! It really depends on how you want you want to showcase your Santa – there’s always a spectacular option for you.

santa visit your house

Many people also like to display Santa’s Visit on a TV or tablet, selecting the option that makes it appear that the same scene is seen through a window frame. Some people even frame it so it really looks like a window! The digital decoration collection also has an additional scene called “Festive Fireplace,” which clever decorators will display on a TV or tablet. They’ll even build a fake fireplace to house the tablet, TV or monitor, making it look like there’s a cozy fire burning.

Night Before Christmas is similar to Santa’s Visit , except that the main character is live action. That means when you display this digital decoration in your window, the Santa Claus who delivers gifts and nibbles on a cookie looks even more realistic. In this digital decoration, Santa also sings three joyful Christmas carols.

There are additional features in Night Before Christmas that are particularly stunning. Also like Santa’s Visit , there is a fireplace scene of a roaring fire that people like to display on their TVs or tablets. But in this case, we see a couple of Santa’s assistants – elves! – lowering themselves down the chimney, attempting to extinguish the fire before Santa descends.

santa visit your house

For those who have smaller displays, for example, miniature Christmas village setups, we’ve seen Santa’s Workshop copied onto a tablet or an old smartphone. That small screen can be placed in a window in the Christmas village or in a dollhouse, to really dramatic effect. (We should note that ALL the digital decorations listed here can work in a similar way.)

Santa’s Sleigh Ride  is AtmosFX’s most recent digital decoration to feature Kris Kringle. While it features him on his sleigh with his reindeer, we’ve seen it capably displayed on windows, walls and TVs. But it is really striking when used in conjunction with AtmosFX’s Hollusion Projection Material, or in a fashion that is sometimes called “Moon Mode.”

Where does the Russian Santa live?

santa visit your house

In Russia, a kind grandfather who brings children presents at New Year ( Russians celebrate Christmas differently ) is called Ded Moroz [Grandfather Frost]. He is a fairytale character from Slavic mythology who personifies winter and the cold. Like his American “colleague”, Santa Claus, the Russian Ded Moroz receives letters from children, in which they tell him what they have been dreaming of and how they have behaved during the year. But unlike Santa, Ded Moroz has not one, but several houses! Let's take a walk around his dominions.

His main residence is in Veliky Ustyug

santa visit your house

The ancestral estate of Ded Moroz is situated in a pine forest 15 km (9.32 mi.) from one of the most beautiful towns in the Russian North, Veliky Ustyug (about 450 km [280 mi.] northeast of Vologda, the capital of Vologda Region). It officially opened to visitors in 1998 and sees over 250,000 tourists every year. The estate is open all year round, but the main festivities begin after November 18, Ded Moroz's birthday. It is considered that on this day winter arrives in the Russian North. He lives here with his wife Zima [Winter] and his helpers.

santa visit your house

The possessions of Ded Moroz are quite extensive: On the premises of his residence is a post office (where all the letters addressed to “Ded Moroz” are delivered), a children's theme park, a fair, a forge, a glacier (which maintains a temperature of -15 degrees Celsius all year round, so that Grandfather Frost doesn't melt!) and the Path of Fairy Tales.

The house of Ded Moroz is made of wood in the shape of a traditional two-storey Russian terem. It’s known as the Magic Control Center. Inside, it has 12 rooms and each depicts the everyday life of Ded Moroz . One room is a library, another is an observatory, a third is a cloakroom and a fourth keeps children's fairy tales. A separate room is allocated to presents. Yes, Ded Moroz likes presents, too! Usually he receives them from his “colleagues” in other regions of the country and the world. The other rooms are used by his helpers, who bring letters, make presents and sew his outfits.

santa visit your house

The most magical room in his terem is the Room of Wishes. They say that all wishes made in it to the ringing of a small bell come true within a year. When Ded Moroz goes to bed, he has dreams about the wishes made by his visitors, and this is how he knows about all the wishes. Every day he has a new pillow: The smallest one is for Monday and the biggest for Sunday, since more visitors come towards the weekend, when he has to have more dreams about their wishes.

By the way, little visitors can enter the School of Magic at his residence and receive a certificate confirming them as helper to Ded Moroz . The course is challenging and includes frost studies, ice sculpture and the ethics of magic messages. But children usually never miss these lessons.

The Moscow estate

santa visit your house

Ded Moroz also has a “branch office” at Kuzminki Park in Moscow (in the southeast of the city). He often visits the capital and receives visitors. During the New Year holidays, a fair, an ice-skating rink and even a theater in which the magician's helpers perform, open at the estate.

santa visit your house

You can visit it all year round, but to get a glimpse inside Ded Moroz's house, be sure to book in advance, since he is not here every day!

santa visit your house

Apart from this estate, a few years ago Grandfather Frost acquired “apartments” in the Empire Tower in Moscow City. However, you can only see him there during the New Year holidays. And what a magnificent view opens up on the 55th floor! A fairy tale!

Snegurochka's residence in Kostroma

santa visit your house

Ded Moroz has a granddaughter, Snegurochka [the Snow Maiden], who always helps him to distribute presents. She has her own small house in Kostroma, an old city on the banks of the River Volga, where she lives with a talking cat called Kot Bayun (which can send a person to sleep in minutes) and her helpers (house spirits responsible for order in the house). Ded Moroz often comes to see her and brings presents, not just for her, but also her visitors, whom she loves to receive. The Snow Maiden also doesn't like the heat and that is why her terem has an Ice Chamber, in which one can always cool down with an ice cream! She also has a letter box for Ded Moroz .

Where else can you meet Ded Moroz ?

Qış Babay.

Many ethnic groups in Russia have their own winter magicians - they are “brothers” of the Russia-wide Ded Moroz . For example, in Yakutia it is Chys Khaan, in Udmurtia Tol Babay and in Tatarstan Qış Babay ( Kysh Babay) . And, by the way, all of them regularly visit one another and exchange presents!

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

Click here to learn about Kremlin tickets prices .

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

  • Armoury Chamber tours

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

If you haven’t had the chance to see a live circus before — and especially if you’re traveling with kids — why not head over to the Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard?

It blends traditional Russian acrobatics with modern-day technology, animals, and the classic circular circus stage. This beloved local entertainment is also considered one of the most enjoyable things to do in Moscow!

67 – Get romantic on a Moskva River dinner cruise

dinner cruises in Moscow

What better way to take in the city’s skyline than from a luxury yacht as you enjoy entertainment, fine dining, and (strong) specialty drinks?

Whether you’re looking for something large that can accommodate groups of friends or something smaller with a bit more VIP style, there are several dinner cruises available to suit any taste and budget.

68 – Explore the wonderful Izmailovo District

Izmailovo District, Moscow

One of the city’s best-kept secrets, Izmailovo ‘s focal point is its Kremlin, a colorful wooden complex. Built in 2007, it has had unique museums and flea markets pop up nearby in the years since.

Throughout the area, you’ll uncover museums dedicated to vodka, break and Russian folk art. The district’s charming open-air flea market has all kinds of crafts and souvenirs are haggled on the daily.

Don’t miss Izmailovo Park , which is an enormous 300-hectare space that plays host to souvenir vendors, forest walking paths and even an ice rink in winter.

With so much to see in the district, savvy travelers typically opt for a guided tour.

69 – Sip on a cocktail at the award-winning City Space Bar and Lounge

City Space Bar and Lounge, Moscow

Self-dubbed as one of the world’s top 10 bars, with accolades like Luxury Travel Guide’s Bar of the Year 2018, this iconic and luxurious watering hole doesn’t need much of an introduction.

Perched sky-high on the 34th floor of Swissotel Krasnye Holmy, the circular lounge bar slings signature cocktails and dishes up truly stunning views of the city.

Hot tip: While there’s never a poor time to visit, aim to arrive an hour or so before sunset, that’s when the city will truly sparkle below.

70 – Pamper yourself at the Sanduny Baths

Sanduny Baths, Moscow

If you’re looking for something to ease that throbbing headache after a night of pub crawling, why not try the famous Sanduny Baths , a quintessentially Russian experience?

Famed as one of the world’s most beautiful public bathhouses, Sanduny’s steam rooms and pools are said to be some of the best in Moscow. But for something totally unique, you can’t go past the birch twigs massage (read: beating).

71 – Spruce up your social media feed at some Insta-worthy restaurants

insta-worthy restaurants in Moscow

While a good meal is always part of the restaurant experience, getting a good pic for Instagram is half the fun!

Luckily, there are tons of excellent eateries that combine great food with gorgeous aesthetics.

Big Wine Freaks has a fantastic drink selection (naturally), and its dark, classy rooms full of elegant light fixtures and plush furniture bring to mind a spy’s hideout.

Meanwhile, Sempre adopts more of a naturalistic approach, surrounding diners with ferns and greenery.

And at Black Market Moscow , you can choose between indoor and outdoor spaces, each featuring their own unique designs and dining experiences.

Take a bite and snap some pics!

72 – Unleash your inner party animal at the Night clubs

nightlife in Moscow

When the sun goes down, you’ll get to see a whole new side of Moscow: its amazing nightlife!

Head to Propaganda for a bite or a beverage, then dance to some quality club tunes.

Or get a little wild at Chesterfield , where you can pay a flat fee and drink as much as you want – the perfect recipe for fun!

And at Rock’N’ Roll , there’s a new form of excitement every day, from DJ sets to live bands, all playing a lively mix of rock music from across the decades.

With all this excitement, you won’t want to book anything early the next day!

How to get to Moscow?

Unless you’re feeling up to the challenge of a long train journey, you’ll most likely be flying into Moscow.

Luckily, it has three international airports to choose from: Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be able to easily reach the city via the Aeroexpress train.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Golden Ring Hotel  will make you feel like you’re on top of the world, whether you’re getting pampered at the beauty salon or enjoying a meal in the rooftop restaurants.

Or check in to Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel & Business Center , which boasts everything from riverside views and a gym to nearby shopping areas and relaxing Turkish baths.

At AZIMUT Hotel Olympic Moscow , the massages, international cuisine, sauna, and swimming pool will keep you happily occupied in between excursions.

And at sister property AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya Moscow , you can savor a nice meal or admire the scenery from the lounge, or stroll over to Gorky Park or roam along Stary Arbat Street.

Meanwhile, Oblaka Hotel blends simple charm and a convenient location, with charming red brick exteriors and easy access to historic sites and a metro station.

Visiting Moscow on a budget?

There’s nothing like seeing a city on foot… especially on a free walking tour !

These excursions aren’t just a way to save money while still learning a lot; they also offer a wonderful opportunity to gain local perspectives, courtesy of your guides.

But despite the name, they do accept tips for a job well done, so bring a bit of money with you!

Where to go next?

If you’re short on time but still want to see the best of Moscow, try some multi-day tours ; they’ll provide all of the coolest sights and experiences in an efficient format.

After that, it’s time to start exploring further afield!

Though it’s a bit of a trek, St. Petersburg is well worth the journey!

With its famously decadent buildings to its lively arts scene, this is the perfect place to soak up some culture; but there are also some more offbeat options, like folk shows, vodka tastings, and even an amusement park!

And from the jaw-dropping designs of the metro stations (yes, you read that correctly) to the glimmer of Faberge eggs, it showcases beauty at every turn.

The Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin and Red Square were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.

Russian secrets? Here’s the ultimate Moscow itinerary

Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

a woman in the rain in central Moscow, Russia

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

the inside of Marinsky Theater during a ballet in Moscow, Russia

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )

7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls in Moscow, Russia

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .

Planned Outage for Some Cornell Lab Services

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

  • eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
  • Macaulay Library
  • Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

  • Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
  • NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
  • eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
  • Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology institutional website
  • All About Birds
  • Cornell Lab YouTube channel

  • If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile
