Ibrox Stadium is the home ground of Glaswegian football club Rangers. Originally designed by Archibald Leitch, it is regarded as one of the iconic stadiums in not only Scotland but the United Kingdom.

Glasgow Rangers Stadium Guide

Ibrox stadium history.

The foundations for the modern Ibrox Stadium as we know it today were laid down between 1978-1981 when three out of four stands were completely rebuilt following  a stadium disaster in 1971 during the Old Firm derby against long term rivals Celtic.

Seen as the worst British Football disaster until Hillsborough in 1989, a crush amongst fans resulted in over 200 injuries and 66 deaths with Rangers F.C accepting a ruling that they were at fault for at least one of the deaths.

Known then as Ibrox Park, the deaths of innocent fans held heavy on the conscious of the club but in reality, and as time would later prove in Sheffield, football stadiums across the United Kingdom were ill-equipped for spectators, essentially accidents waiting to happen.

Former player turned executive Willie Waddel was tasked with reconstructing Ibrox and he travelled to the 1974 World Cup in Germany, citing Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion as the ideal template to follow.

With only the original main stand deemed suitable to current requirements, the other three were demolished and converted to all seating which at the time was seen as a very adventurous move.

The Taylor Report published in 1990 essentially vindicated the Scottish club’s first hand evidence that stadiums were unsafe although the club did retain a small amount of terracing within the one remaining Bill Struth stand.

Funded by Rangers football pools operation which was the largest club run scheme in Britain, £6 million pounds was raised and although costs spiralled to £10,00 the club were on an upward trajectory with season tickets sales rising from 7,000 to 30,000 in the 1990s. Eventually the other stadiums in Glasgow caught up with Celtic Park exceeding Ibrox’s capacity which prompted Rangers to investigate the feasibility of expansion but the plans for to reach 57,000 thousand were thwarted by the Global financial crisis and more recently, the club’s administration.

QPR opens doors to new training complex

rangers training ground tours

3 minute read

Images: Studio Zoppini

English Championship football club Queens Park Rangers (QPR) has today (Wednesday) officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art training ground.

Located in Heston, part of the London Borough of Hounslow, the complex will accommodate the club’s first team, Under 23s and academy squads from the 2023-24 season.

The facility has been designed by Studio Zoppini Architects and delivered by a project team including: global design engineering consultants Buro Happold, planning advisors HGH Consulting, and contract administrators Arcadis. Construction was completed by Michael Brady Ltd (MBL) and all pitch works and landscaping by White Horse contractors.

The 27-acre site sits within the green belt, adjacent to the M4 motorway and residential areas, along with Cranford College. Studio Zoppini said it was imperative that the design was sensitive to its location whilst providing an “aspirational environment” for all the representatives of the club and a positive asset to the local community.

rangers training ground tours

The domestic profile of the building enables an extruded form that enables internal zoning and spatial interest to key areas. The entrance is secluded, whilst the main social spaces of the gym and dining areas open up to views across the practice pitches and the surrounding countryside.

The building’s orientation and envelope has been designed to integrate natural ventilation and daylight – both introducing passive design measures and creating a better workplace for all staff, including players. The number of EV (electric vehicle) charging points have also been increased from the original plans.

Jon Tollit, senior consultant at Studio Zoppini UK, said: “Training facilities are the catalyst for the next generation and this building will provide a focus for the club for the years ahead, being flexible and adaptable to future needs. It is integrated and respectful to its Green Belt location, as it is to the local community. The project was a real ‘team’ effort.”

rangers training ground tours

Buro Happold delivered a full range of multidisciplinary engineering services, creating a project with impressive sustainability credentials. The facility features on-site renewable energy regeneration with 922 square metres of solar photovoltaic panels, as well as extensive use of air source heat pumps.

It is expected that thanks to a combination of demand reduction, and low-carbon air source heat pump and renewable energy systems, the project will exceed its 35% reduction target over Part L 2013 baseline figures, achieving BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification.  Carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced by 77% above Greater London Authority targets.

Buro Happold’s structural engineering team delivered carbon savings on the project, advising on lightweight partitions to minimise the loading on steelwork, as well as pushing for cement replacement where possible.

Parametric analysis shows that the timber partitions fins will create a 21% and 23% reduction in solar gain on the western and eastern facades, respectively. The project was also used to test Buro Happold’s embodied carbon tool, a resource that aims to reduce embodied carbon across all projects.

Steve Macey, director at Buro Happold, said: “It’s fantastic that QPR’s new training ground is complete and ready for its teams to start training ahead of the new football season. We’ve been involved over a number of years to consolidate the club’s first team with the academy onto a single sustainable site, and this is the culmination of all that hard work.”

Training Grounds: Rangers Training Centre, Auchenhowie

It's looking increasingly unlikely that Rangers will be able to seriously challenge Ange Postecoglou's impressive Celtic side for the 2022-23 Scottish Premier League title. However, fans on the blue side of Glasgow have at least been given some great memories in recent years, following a long period in the wilderness during the 2010s. To assist their rise back to the top of Scottish football, the club have made important improvements in various aspects of daily operation. One area that's received some attention is the training ground of the first team.

In this article, which is part of our series of guides to the world's best training grounds, we'll be uncovering all the details of this training centre. We'll give you the name of the Rangers training ground and provide information about the facilities on offer and the improvements that have been made across recent seasons. We'll also compare the Rangers training ground to similar facilities and briefly discuss the plans the club has for the future. Let's get stuck in.

What is the name of the Rangers Training Ground?

Located in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, a small town in the northwestern suburbs of Greater Glasgow, the Rangers Training Ground is around six miles from the Scottish capital's city centre. It's been the Rangers base of operations since 2001, when it was opened following the requests of then manager Dick Advocaat, who insisted on the club developing a dedicated training facility. Before its opening, the first team trained across a number of Glasgow locations, including Ibrox Stadium, Bellahouston Park, and the West of Scotland cricket ground. For a club of Rangers' stature to have been in this situation so recently seems bizarre, but it's slightly more understandable when you consider the substantial cost of the training ground, which was estimated at around £14 million.

In those early days, the centre was named Murray Park after the Rangers owner at the time, David Murray. However, after Craig Whyte bought the club from Murray in 2011, this name pretty much ceased to be used. These days, it's referred to by the more simple official title of the Rangers Training Centre . Following the signing of a bumper £10 million deal with the sports brand in 2018, the facility was renamed the Hummel Training Centre, although the Rangers Training Centre is a more universally understood name. Another title you can expect to hear in reference to the site is Auchenhowie , which is the name of the locality within Milngavie that the training ground sits in.

How has the Rangers Training Ground been improved in recent years?

When Auchenhowie opened in 2001, it was a state-of-the-art facility, but as the years wore on, that stopped being the case. Improvements were needed if the club was going to continue striving to be the best, winning titles and competing in European competitions. In February 2016, plans were revealed by the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund (a fund launched in 2012 to protect the club's future during administration) for a £450,000 264-seater stand at Murray Park. The following year, planning permission was granted for both the stand and an array of other refurbishments. This included additional dressing room facilities, a classroom area, plus additional floodlighting. This work was wrapped up in summer 2019 after an 18-month project, with the new stand opened on 2nd August 2019.

These improvements allowed the facility to become the regular home venue for all the Rangers' women's team's competitive matches. Rangers' male under-18 team also use the site for home fixtures, as do the reserve team from time to time. And since then, other adjustments to the Auchenhowie site have been made.

New boss Michael Beale, who was appointed in November 2022 to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has spoken on record about the impressive changes made to the Rangers training ground while under the stewardship of former England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Standards were raised across the facility, and after being shown the revamped managerial offices on a tour by sporting director Ross Wilson, Beale reportedly said "Oh, wow. It has been changed up, hasn't it? Class!" Beale, who was Gerrard's Assistant Manager at both Rangers and Villa before he took on the head role at QPR, also said of his former stint at Rangers: "Behind the scenes we redeveloped and created a lot of Ibrox and the training ground, which was fantastic coming back to… it's kicked on another notch."

And redevelopment seems to be constantly ongoing. Speaking to local press, sporting director Wilson said "There is a new camera system coming in from tomorrow. One of those where you can sit at your desk and watch training and stuff. Then pitch lights, heat lamps are coming in any week now." The ambition is there for all to see.

Training Ground: Facilities, Size, and Dimensions

For pretty much all professional clubs, the training ground is the most important location when it comes to day-to-day work. It's where all the action happens, from detailed set piece coaching , to sports science work, injury recovery and rehabilitation, and post-match analysis. As a result, it's crucial that these sites are equipped with the best facilities and the latest technology. Let's spend some time exploring exactly what's on offer to Rangers players in 2023.

The Rangers Training Centre is a decent-sized site, although it's not as big as Premier League giants such as Arsenal and Chelsea, whose London Colney and Cobham sites both measure up at around 140 acres. Rangers, in comparison, train at a ground that's around 38 acres (over fifteen hectares). This space is split up into three main areas: the administration wing, the professional wing, which is occupied by the first team, and the youth development wing, where academy operations take place. The youth and professional wings share a range of facilities, including the gym, medical suite, and the indoor synthetic pitch. However, they also have their own separate receptions, dining areas, changing rooms, kit stores and lecture rooms. For the staff at many clubs, keeping a degree of separation between first team and youth team is important, because it gives the younger players something to aspire to and aim towards.

The training ground has seven full-sized pitches, six of which are outside, with the additional pitch an indoor 60 x 40 metre synthetic rubber crumb field that allows players to train whatever the weather. There are also two half-sized pitches, plus a practice area. Under-soil heating is installed in two of the full-sized and one of the half-sized pitches, with these more high-tech pitches used only by the Rangers first team.

But training doesn't start and end out on the pitch. The gym equipment, which is valued at around £150,000, is linked in to a computer system that holds dedicated personal fitness programmes for each individual player. This kind of attention to detail is mirrored in the training centre's media editing suite, where video analysts can study training sessions and matches to identify areas in which the team can improve. There's also a 6 x 3 metre hydrotherapy pool with an angled, movable floor and various massage jets and currents that can be used to boost the efficacy of rehabilitation sessions. An iso-kinetic machine in the gym adds further opportunities for injury recovery by allowing injured players to work out and test muscle strength and reactions.

How does the Rangers Training Ground compare to other training centres at the same level?

Following the renovations explained in the last section of the article, the Rangers Training Centre is definitely up there with some of the UK's best training grounds. Its quality is evidenced by the fact that it's been chosen as the base of operations for a number of high-level teams, from the South Korea national football team, who trained there before the 2006 FIFA World Cup, to Inter Milan, who used the centre in February 2015 prior to a UEFA Europa League match against Celtic. Juventus and Blackburn Rovers have also trained there in preparation for European ties against Celtic, a testament to the bitter rivalry between the clubs, with Rangers keen to help other sides gain an edge on their Glasgow opponents.

A first-class facility that has undergone serious improvement in recent seasons, the Rangers Training Centre is easily one of the two best training facilities in Scotland, along with Celtic. It also compares admirably with a number of Premier League coaching centres, although admittedly it probably can't claim to quite reach the standards of new state-of-the-art sites like the Leicester City FC Training Ground, which you can read out in our comprehensive guide .

What are the plans for the future?

As we've discussed, the Rangers hierarchy certainly don't seem to be sitting still and letting the training ground drop in quality as the years pass. Even in the year or so that former Assistant Coach Michael Beale was south of the border, improvements were made. Managing Director Stewart Robertson revealed in February last year that Champions League qualification would secure a £40 million windfall that would allow the club to invest heavily in the training ground to maintain standards for the seasons to come. Fans would've been delighted then, for multiple reasons, when qualification for the competition was confirmed in August 2022. And while the Glasgow side's performances were disappointing (they finished bottom of a tough group without a single point), their European adventures will have brought in some cash regardless. So what do they plan to do with it?

According to Robertson, "(Champions League money) would allow us to do more around the stadium and there are various plans for the training ground, for example, a second hybrid pitch and a second pitch with undersoil heating to provide greater flexibility during the winter. There are other areas like the academy and women's team we'd like to expand, so it would help us accelerate those." It seems as though the ongoing project of redevelopment at the Rangers Training Centre is set to continue.

  • Levi's Stadium

rangers training ground tours

On June 8, 2010, voters in Santa Clara approved Measure J, allowing Santa Clara to lease the land previously being used as an overflow parking lot by the Great America theme park. This allowed the 49ers Stadium Authority to begin plans to construct Levi's Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. Funds for the project were secured on December 13, 2011 and construction began in April of 2012.

Santa Clara was chosen after plans to build a new stadium at Candlestick Point, an effort to replace the aging and outdated Candlestick Park, failed when the 49ers and the city of San Francisco could not come to an agreement on the new stadium's location. The 49ers offices and training facility have been located in Santa Clara since 1987, so that was the logical next choice.

Tip: August through October can be very warm. Dress accordingly, use sunscreen, and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Levi's Stadium and the San Francisco Bay Area were chosen as the host stadium and city for Super Bowl 50, which took place on February 7, 2016.

rangers training ground tours

The stadium will host Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Stadium Name

On May 9, 2013, the 49ers and Levi Strauss & Co. announced a 20-year naming rights proposal to the Santa Clara Stadium Authority. The deal is worth $220 million, making Levi Strauss & Co. a corporate sponsor of the 49ers. At the time, the $11 million per season deal was the second largest among current NFL naming rights agreements.

Over 180 different food items are served at Levi's Stadium, with 17 types of quick-service concepts that are named for exactly what they're selling. They include Franks (nitrate-free, with a vegan option), Burgers (with American Kobe beef and vegan burgers), Curry (Indian-style, with spiced naan, cassava chips, and varieties like Rajisthani lamb and vegan navy bean and kale), Tortas, Soft Serve, Barbecue (pulled pork or pulled jackfruit), Panini and Steamed Buns (Asian-style bao in Peking duck, pork belly, and vegan portobello varieties).

There are also kid's meals at meny stands with choices like pizza, hot dogs, and chicken tenders. Vegans and vegetarians also have plenty of options available.

On the upper concourse, there is a Mondo Burrito, a tap room with 42 different draft beers, and many places have wine available. There is also Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak & Pub, a high-end steakhouse with a casual pub that is also open on non-game days.

Of course, if you are a member of the press, you are provided three meals on game days within the Verizon Press Level.

  • Monday to Saturday (Off-Season): 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Sunday (all year): 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

There are also numerous smaller stores and kiosks located throughout the stadium.

rangers training ground tours

Team Store Online

You can also purchase merchandise from the San Francisco 49ers Official Online Store .

Tip: While the Levi's Stadium store offers a larger selection than the official online store, much of the inventory is available there. If you see something that you like at the Levi's Stadium store, check for it online. You will likely find it cheaper and it will be delivered to your home.

49ers Museum

Levi's Stadium is home to a 20,000 square-foot interactive museum that highlights the San Francisco 49ers' rich history in the Bay Area and consists of 11 gallery and exhibit spaces. You can stop by the Morabito Theater to watch the history of the 49ers on a 50-by-18 foot Sony 4k screen. The Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame houses life size statues of the 49ers' enshrined in Canton, Ohio. You can even see a re-creation of legendary 49ers head coach Bill Walsh's first office located in Redwood City.

There is a learning center for younger fans and interactive features on the bottom level of the museum. For example, you can practice your field goal skills by kicking through a virtual field goal, practice your endzone dance, learn to cheer with the Gold Rush cheerleaders, try your hand at broadcasting, and try on a 49ers uniform.

There is a fee to enter the museum.

rangers training ground tours

There is stadium wide Wi-Fi available for all fans. You can use it to access statistics, replays and more via the stadium's official app .

You can also place an order for food from your seat and either pick it up or have it delivered to you for a small fee. The options available for in-seat delivery are limited. You place an order and pay on your mobile device, an estimate for the delivery time is given, a code is made available on your device, and you show that code to the person that delivers your order.

Tip: Allow more time than the given estimate for your order to be delivered. The estimate can be lower than the actual delivery time.

You also have access to mobile ticketing, access turn-by-turn directions throughout the stadium, and view wait times for concession stands and restrooms. It is estimated that, while within the stadium, fans are never more than 10 feet away from a Wi-Fi signal.

Data speeds within the stadium during game time average about 60 Mbps for both download and upload.

Tip: It is important to note that some phone carriers may be able to beat those speeds in the area of the stadium. For example, T-Mobile gets around 80 Mbps download in the area. Game time speeds will vary.

Solar Power

Levi's Stadium features 49 solar arrays provided by NRG Energy on the roof of the facility to form the NRG Solar Terrance. It also features NRG Solar Bridges that fans cross to access the stadium. These all consist of over 1,150 solar panels. They gather enough energy to power the stadium for every San Francisco 49ers home game.

There are 10 clubs located within Levi's Stadium, with the largest being the United Club located on the 300 level of the Suite Tower. It runs the entire length of the field.
