Mario Kart Tour Online Multiplayer: How To Play With Friends

Kart against bots, but not your friends.

By Steve Watts on October 3, 2019 at 11:28AM PDT

Mario Kart Tour is available now , with Nintendo releasing this mobile adaptation of its classic racing franchise on both iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android devices. But its multiplayer options can be more than a bit confusing, as it's actually (at present) a single-player experience. But when you dive in, you'll likely have many questions: Can you add friends? Can you play with your friends? Why aren't those the same thing? Aren't you already playing multiplayer anyway? The game itself is fairly unclear in explaining who exactly you're playing against, but we've nailed down the specifics regarding multiplayer--or, as it turns out, the lack thereof. Here's what you need to know.

Adding Friends

For starters, you are able to add friends. That option can be found in the Friends section of the main menu, and it will pull suggestions from your Nintendo, Facebook, or Twitter accounts if you link them to the game. However, this feature is limited to comparing your rankings against friends. You can't play against them, and a "Multiplayer" feature is grayed out in the main menu with a promise that it is "Inbound!"

  • Mario Kart Tour Isn't Great, But It Has Some Great Ideas

Is It Multiplayer?

Compounding the confusion is the fact that the game is online-only, and you appear to be playing multiplayer against strangers all the time. But Nintendo has confirmed to GameSpot that it only has single-player features at launch, so your opponents are actually bots with player-like usernames. Regardless, you cannot pause races, and the game performs a network check upon starting a race as if it's seeking online opponents. Nintendo declined to comment on when multiplayer is coming.

Playing Against Friends

There is one way to compete with your friends, albeit indirectly. Once you open up Ranked Cups--the first of which is the Koopa Troopa Cup, the fourth available Cup--you'll be racing to achieve a ranked score against random opponents. That score entitles you to extra rewards like bonus rubies or coins after the week-long scoring period. The ranked score menu has a Friends tab, where you can compare your score to your friends. That appears to be the only way to compete with friends for the time being.

Mario Kart Tour's first event is live now, offering Pauline from her revival in Super Mario Odyssey and Musician Mario as bonus characters. It's free-to-play, but the monetization hooks are surprisingly aggressive , implementing both gacha mechanics and a Battle Pass-like subscription.

Mario Kart Tour: How to Play Multiplayer

Image of Ty Arthur

While  Mario Kart’s mobile version  only allowed playing against bots for months, real multiplayer is finally here.

There are a few things you need to know ahead of time to get a match started. Below, we go over everything from accessing multiplayer to race rewards and issues that might keep you from playing and how to troubleshoot them.

How to Start Multiplayer in Mario Kart Tour

mario kart tour cross platform

Instead of being available for two weeks as in single-player, each multiplayer cup only lasts 15 minutes.

You can start a multiplayer match in two places. From the tour menu, just tap Multiplayer in the bottom left. Otherwise, head to the main menu and click the Multiplayer icon featuring the red, green, and blue mushroom drivers.

For the best experience, play  Mario Kart Tour’s multiplayer on wifi . Currently, many players trying to use data are experiencing issues getting into multiplayer matches.

You also have to allow Mario Kart Tour to access your location to get into a match, so make sure you have the feature turned on.

Finally, if you don’t initiate a rocket start during the countdown, you might time out and get booted from the match. There seem to be more connection issues if the cup is near its end, so if you keep getting the Communication Error message, wait for the next cup to start and try again.

mario kart tour cross platform

There are currently three ways to play Mario Kart Tour multiplayer:

  • Standard Race   —  This features shifting daily rules, like 100cc races and normal items slots or 50cc races and two item slots
  • Gold Race   —  This is an upgraded gold version of the race, allowing for 200cc speeds. It is only available if you have the $4.99 a month gold pass.
  • Private Race   — This lets you play privately with your nearby friends. Tap “Create Room” to access this section.

Each race features a randomized course, which means you won’t always have the best driver, kart, or glider for the current course. Players with more pipe pulls will do better overall, but because of this randomization, you won’t always be left in the dust.

Also keep in mind that all Standard and Gold races pit you against drivers of a similar rank. That means races will be significantly harder in multiplayer than in single-player against normal AI opponents, especially at the higher ranks.

Mario Kart Tour Multiplayer Rewards

Whereas you often aim for five stars in an offline match, getting a combo and then maintaining that combo isn’t actually helpful in multiplayer. Your only real goal in multiplayer is to get 1st Place.

However, you can complete daily quests for extra stars in multiplayer matches, as well as earn coins that count towards your daily 300-coin maximum. That has a surprising downside, though: being in 1st Place can actually be negative since you are more likely to pull coins from item boxes rather than anything useful.

There is another, more tangible reward for multiplayer, although it requires leaving the app and heading over to Twitter. To spread the word about the multiplayer launch, a retweet campaign is also live that runs through Sunday, March 15 at 9:00 p.m.

#MarioKartTour multiplayer is here! Let’s celebrate with a retweet campaign. If this tweet and the corresponding one on the Japanese account reach a combined 30,000 RTs, all current players will be gifted 30 rubies and an in-game badge! Watch the video for more info. pic.twitter.com/z4pVpcjkn3 — Mario Kart Tour (@mariokarttourEN) March 9, 2020

Here are the rewards up for grabs if:

  • 15,000 retweets : New in-game Mario badge
  • 20,000 retweets : New in-game Mario badge and 20 free rubies
  • 30,000 retweets : New in-game Mario badge and 30 free rubies

Those rewards will hit player accounts between March 25 and April 7 if there are enough retweets.

Mario Kart Tour Multiplayer Update: Everything you need to know, how to play locally, add friends, and more

Strap in for everything you need for the Mario Kart Tour Multiplayer Update

Mario Kart Tour is the mobile racer which has had a fair amount of controversy, but that hasn't stopped it from steamrolling its way to millions of dedicated players. With the latest update to the game, Mario Kart Tour finally has full multiplayer functionality, included local and online play with friends, making this a magnificent moment in all honesty.

Standard VS Gold Pass

Once you jump into the multiplayer menu you'll have three choices, Standard Race, Gold Pass Race, and Create a Room. In case you couldn't tell, the Gold Pass race is exclusively for Gold Pass subscribers.

If you're not a subscriber, this race type, which has a slightly different ruleset, will be off limits to you, unfortunately.

Standard players will have to stick to the Standard Race type for standard rewards, and if you want to set up a local game or with friends, you should of course jump into the Create a Room option.

Earning stars online

While playing online you will be playing on a set few tracks, depending on which cup is being run at that moment. You can earn stars for these tracks separately to the actual cups, allowing you to get extra stars to earn more rewards, without necessarily splashing on a Gold Pass.

This will definitely keep players engaged in the multiplayer, though I must admit, it doesn't seem like the best reward. I would've been more enticed by a multiplayer exclusive driver, glider, or kart, which you can work your way towards every few weeks.

But it's still early days, and the multiplayer is already much better than during the beta phase, so things can only get better.

Opening a local multiplayer lobby

The other option on the multiplayer menu is Create a Room, which allows you to set some arbitrary rules (how many items can be used, the CC) and then get friends in the room.

Here's the issue. You can't invite people to the room. Nope, you just have to have people join, and frankly, how you actually get people to join isn't exactly clear.

But you should be able to join the room a friend has opened by visiting them in your friend list. Though this may be difficult. So make sure to add plenty of friends, both online and off, to fill up those rooms.

Playing with friends and getting more friends

Of course to fill up your multiplayer rooms you need more friends to compete against, and wouldn't you know it, we have a guide for that.

Of course, you should also make sure to add any friends you have in real life. You know, as a back up.

Mario Kart Tour Review

One-handed mario kart, but at a cost..

Kyle Hilliard Avatar

Nintendo’s mobile efforts have been divisive to say the least. Since the launch of Super Mario Run in 2016 it has struggled to combine its traditional quality of gameplay with mobile’s monetization in a fair and effective way. Few people seemed happy with Mario Run’s premium price of $10, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’s dearth of content made it less than exciting to invest in, and Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Dr. Mario World all use familiar but frustrating microtransaction tactics that work against the gameplay. After racing through Mario Kart Tour, it seems Nintendo is still struggling with this difficult hurdle in this free-to-play version for iOS and Android. The numbers on the price tags next to Tour’s microtransactions are surprisingly big, but at least the actual driving works well and often feels impressively similar to a traditional Mario Kart game.

Similar, but definitely not equal to. The racing is more restrictive and simpler, making it an undeniable downgrade from Mario Kart 8, the most recent (and arguably best – fight me) Mario Kart, but the transition to one-handed mobile devices is handled well. Classic tracks have been tweaked and redesigned to take advantage of the vertical perspective and the single-input touch controls work well. You can choose traditional turning controls, which are recommended for newcomers, but I went with the drift controls option which locks you into a drift as soon as you start turning. It took some getting used to, but I felt comfortable sliding around wide turns to build up boost after only a few races. Swiping up to launch weapons forward works well, as does swiping down to drop them behind. I did run into some trouble making my way down winding paths, but during those moments where I was speeding down the track expertly launching turtle shells at my opponents I felt like I was playing a real Mario Kart game – an impressive feat on a phone.

Promotional image featuring in-game screenshot of Mario Kart Tour.

One of the smart elements of Tour that accounts for the mobile platform is the brief time commitment of each play session. Tracks are short and races are only two laps, as opposed to the typical three, and I liked getting through a race in just a few minutes. Likewise, a full cup is only three races, capped off with a unique mission involving hitting a certain number of jumps or racing through a certain number of rings, as a pair of examples. I like these special bonus races at the end of each cup because they let me use racers and karts I had not yet unlocked, and they also teach specific mechanics like how to take full advantage of the boosts awarded for hitting a jump. They’re also quicker than driving a full race, which again helps the pick-up-and-play nature of Mario Kart Tour.

The actual gameplay and racing of Mario Kart Tour is well done: controlling the karts feels good, the courses and characters look and sound great, and playing simplified one-handed Mario can be a lot of fun. But the road to a mobile version of Mario Kart is a bumpy one. On top of multiplayer not currently being available at all, Nintendo continues to struggle with how to comfortably monetize a mobile game without hamstringing its gameplay. Tour’s prices are prohibitively high and not getting top honors on a race despite winning first place just because you don’t have the right racer or kart feels unfair.

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii U Crossplay (Cross-Platform) Games

On this page, you can find Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii U cross-platform games. Games listed here are confirmed as working with crossplay between these two platforms.

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a gaming platform that allows gamers to play their favorite games at home on their television or on the go. The system comes with two controllers that can be used together in handheld mode or separately in tabletop mode or TV mode. The Switch also has a unique feature called the Joy-Con Grip, which lets you attach the two controllers to the grip and use it as one larger controller. The Switch has a wide variety of games available, from first-party Nintendo classics like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. to third-party blockbusters like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2. There's something for everyone on the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Wii U

The Nintendo Wii U is a home video game console that was released by Nintendo in 2012. It is the successor to the Wii and competes with Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4. The Wii U is the first Nintendo console to support HD graphics and features a 6.2-inch touchscreen display on its GamePad controller, which can be used as a secondary screen or for off-TV play. The Wii U was met with a mixed reception at launch due to its high price and lack of compelling software. However, it has since become home to several popular exclusive games such as Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Mario kart tour: release date, price, platforms and everything you need to know.

Nintendo's mobile games library will expand with its most-loved series after the Mario platformers. Here's all you need to know about Mario Kart Tour.

Nintendo's mobile games library is to expand with a smartphone version of its most-loved gaming series after the Mario platformers themselves.

Mario Kart Tour will be the first in the company's long-standing racing franchise to make it onto a non- Nintendo platform. It is coming soon for phones and tablets and that gives us an ideal opportunity to look at what to expect.

We have gameplay footage videos, pre-registration details and much more. Here then is everything you need to know about Mario Kart on mobile.

Mario Kart Tour release date

After several delays, Mario Kart Tour will be available to download and play on 25 September 2019.

It was previously promised for March 2019, then "summer", but at least the wait is now almost over.

Mario Kart Tour gameplay

The game was first announced through Twitter early 2018, with just a logo unveiled.

Now though, we have gameplay footage. You can see several key locations in an official video below.

You can also see from a separate teaser video that the game runs only in portrait mode and is designed to be played using just one hand (on a phone). Swipes and presses will control steering and drifting.

Locations in the game will include Mario Kart classics, such as Rainbow Road, but also tracks based in major worldwide cities, including Paris, Tokyo and New York.

Other features of play will include different, collectable drivers, karts and gliders. Plus, there will be special in-game events during different time periods.

Mario Kart Tour platforms and pre-orders

Mario Kart Tour will be available for iOS and Android.

You can pre-register for each version on the respective app stores, with the iOS version available for pre-order here and Android version here .

Mario Kart Tour price

One aspect of another Nintendo mobile game, Super Mario Run, that has been heavily criticised is its business model, but we expect Nintendo to follow a similar pattern with Mario Kart Tour.

Nintendo describes the new game as "free-to-start", but there will be plenty of in-game purchases.

We don't yet know whether that will require a major purchase to unlock the game beyond a few beginning tracks. If so, Super Mario Run costs £9.99 to unlock the rest of the game after the first demo world, so you could expect a similar outlay.

Mario Kart Tour Nintendo registration

As well as the pre-registration pages for each format, you will also need register a Nintendo Account before you can play (if you don't already have one).

It is free and you can do it ahead of release. Just head to accounts.nintendo.com/register to sign up.

If you already have a Nintendo Account (for example, if you own a Switch or play another Nintendo mobile game) then you do not need to register again and will simply be able to log into Mario Kart Tour on release.

Yoshi's Island (race course)

Yoshi's Island is a race course that first released as part of Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , appearing as the fourth and final course of the Fruit Cup , and reappears in Mario Kart Tour , starting with the 2023 Yoshi Tour . It is a course that takes place on the island it is named after , with its music theme being an arrangement of the athletic theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island . It is the second course to be introduced to the Mario Kart series in the Booster Course Pass, after Sky-High Sundae . Despite the course being introduced in Mario Kart Tour around one month after its Booster Course Pass release, it does not have a classic course prefix in either game, and internal data marks it as a new course for Mario Kart Tour . [1]

Akin to other courses based on games outside of the Super Mario franchise, this course uses the logo for the Yoshi's Island series for its starting line, and the course itself is heavily inspired by the game it is based on, featuring obstacles like Stilt Guys and Huffin Puffins , and mechanics like Winged Clouds that can summon stretches of road when driven into. The layout of the course appears to reference all the world themes from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island . Many cameos from the game appear in the background, including Incoming Chomps , Petal Guys , Goonies , an enormous Nep-Enut , and Yoshi's ally Poochy . Koopa Paratroopas and Sidesteppers also appear on the course. A windpump near the starting line plays the same sound effect as the Paddle Platforms in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island . Additionally, there is a Goal Ring near the finish line.

Similarly to Hyrule Circuit , Animal Crossing , and Urchin Underpass , this course has unique coins —in this case, the coins have the same design and collection sound effect as in the Yoshi's Island series. It also has a unique race start fanfare, finish line fanfare, and results theme based on the "Game Start", "Goal", and "Score" themes, respectively. While some other courses feature unique race start fanfares and results music, this is the only course in the Mario Kart series to feature its own unique finish line fanfare; this fanfare plays regardless of the player's final placement in the race, unlike other courses that use three different fanfares depending on the player's placement.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe [ edit ]

Course layout [ edit ].

Racers begin at Yoshi's House in a field that resembles World 1 from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island . Racers drive along a slight serpentine path, avoiding Stilt Guys and Huffin Puffins before diving into an underwater section. Surrounding the underwater section is a forest that resemble the basis' World 2 and World 3 . This section ends with racers driving into a castle. Leaving the castle, racers emerge from the water and drive through a small cave. Exiting the cave, racers drive up an active volcano, like the one in World 6 . A glider ramp then takes players up to the clouds, driving above snow-capped mountains similar to World 5 , before taking another glider to the ground level where they can drive into a Winged Cloud to make a red bridge appear. After reaching the ground (or the aforementioned bridge), they make a right hand turn to return to the finish line. There are also Yoshi spectators sitting, standing, jumping and waving with three Yoshis on a wooden arch.

Mario Kart Tour [ edit ]

Yoshi's Island in Mario Kart Tour

Yoshi's Island reappears in Mario Kart Tour , debuting in the 2023 Yoshi Tour . The minimap for the course is rotated 90° clockwise compared to how it appeared in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . While the coins are no longer themed around Yoshi Coins, other crossover elements like the Yoshi's Island starting banner, the race fanfare and the unique race ending theme have been retained, making it the first and only course in Mario Kart Tour to feature these elements. Instead of acting as obstacles, the Huffin Puffins are now located in the background as spectators. The road leading up to the top of the mountain after leaving the castle section now features an icy fog effect. The Cloud Platform after the gliding section over the volcano is bouncy and lacks the ramp; consequently, it no longer appears in the minimap. The Winged Cloud is now stationary instead of moving from left to right and vice-versa. The arrangement of coins inside the Goal Ring has been removed, though it now provides points when passed through. Poochy has also been removed from the mailbox right after the finish line, most likely due to him debuting as a driver alongside the release of the course. The second-to-last hill in the row of background hills now has a set of pine trees on its top, now resembling the hills in World 2-1 of the original Yoshi's Island game more closely. Unlike in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , the volcano is dormant, with no lava splashes occurring. Additionally, the chimneys on Yoshi's House as well as on the castle in the cloud section now emit smoke.

This course also appears as Yoshi's Island R (reversed), Yoshi's Island T (with ramps), and Yoshi's Island R/T (reversed with ramps). In the R and R/T variants, the Winged Cloud is gone as racers use a cannon to glide up to the cloud section, and the water geysers and Piranha Plant are also gone. In the R variant, there are Stilt Guys on the first U-bend. In the T variant, there are three Turning Floors , the Sidesteppers and glide ramps are gone, and racers can finish each lap by driving over Yoshi's House, where there is a starting line with the classic Mario Kart logo, as opposed to the other new courses. In the R/T variant, racers drive on top of the castle and skip most of the following water section, and finish each lap by gliding over Yoshi's House, though the additional starting line now uses the modern Mario Kart logo.

Appearances [ edit ]

For this course's tour appearances, see List of Yoshi's Island tour appearances in Mario Kart Tour .

Top-tier and middle-tier items [ edit ]

Select "show" to reveal the drivers, karts, and gliders for which Yoshi's Island and its variants are always favored or favorite courses . For instances in which additional drivers, karts, and gliders temporarily had this course and its variants as favored or favorite courses, see List of Yoshi's Island tour appearances in Mario Kart Tour .

Bonus challenges [ edit ]

Profiles [ edit ].

  • This course is entirely new to the Mario Kart series!
  • Fans of the Super Mario World™ 2: Yoshi's Island™ game for the Super NES™ system will find a lot of callbacks here―from enemies to locations to sound effects. Even the coins have Yoshi's face on them!
  • Use the question mark clouds near the end of each lap to create a handy shortcut.
  • Nintendo Switch News app (UK): Take a tour of Yoshi's Island! Here's a closer look at another course released as part of the fourth wave, which is available now: Yoshi's Island. Appearing as a course for the very first time in the Mario Kart series, Yoshi's Island takes inspiration from the Super NES™ game of the same name and is replete with familiar enemies and gimmicks. For a nostalgic touch, the coins have Yoshi's face on them, and the sound effect when you grab them sounds just like it did back in the day! A hot tip for the end section of each lap: If you touch the Winged Cloud, it'll reveal a shortcut that might just give you the winning edge!

The Rumored Mario Kart Crossroads Seems Like the Logical Next Step

A new rumor claims that the next Mario Kart game will be focused on Nintendo crossovers, which makes sense given recent Mario Kart games.

From Super Mario Party to Mario Golf: Super Rush, the Nintendo Switch has a good roster of Super Mario spin-offs to offer users. Nevertheless, for a long time fans have been asking when they'll get a new Mario Kart game. The Switch technically has a Mario Kart title thanks to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but not everyone is satisfied with this expanded port of the Wii U entry. Fans of the successful Super Mario racing subseries would love to see a new Mario Kart game exclusive to the Switch, even if they've already got access to Mario Kart 8.

According to a recent leak, the wait for a Mario Kart game may be over soon. LeakyPandy, an industry insider who specializes in Nintendo news, recently claimed that Nintendo will reveal a game called either Mario Kart 10 or Mario Kart Crossroads sometime in 2022. According to LeakyPandy, Mario Kart Crossroads will differ from its predecessors in that it will cross broadly with other Nintendo properties. That may sound strange at a glance, but when considering recent changes to Mario Kart, a crossover game seems like the logical next step in a long-term plan from Nintendo.

Mario Kart's Broadening Horizons

Historically, Mario Kart has maintained its focus on the Super Mario world. Even if it sometimes included peripheral characters like Donkey Kong Jr. or Funky Kong, they were still parts of the Super Mario universe. Nintendo's first sign of deviation from that formula was in Mario Kart DS where players could unlock R.O.B. , the robotic former Nintendo toy now best known for his appearances in Super Smash Bros. From then on, Nintendo steadily began to experiment with adding its other properties to the Mario Kart games.

Mario Kart 8 saw a huge uptick in content from other Nintendo franchises. It featured two crossover DLCs; one bringing Link from The Legend of Zelda into the game, and the other bringing Isabelle and two Villagers from Animal Crossing. Mario Kart 8 not only got courses themed after Animal Crossing and Zelda , but F-Zero and Excitebike as well. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe took the expansion even further by adding two Inklings from Splatoon to the roster. As a result, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe felt significantly more like a union of Nintendo products than a simple Mario racing game.

The Long Wait for More Mario Kart

Considering that pattern of expansion, the rumors about Mario Kart Crossroads aren't hard to believe. Mario Kart 8 's DLC make it seem like Nintendo has been interested in turning Mario Kart into a crossover franchise for some time, so Crossroads would be the natural conclusion. Whether or not Crossroads becomes the new standard for the franchise is hard to say, but there's certainly potential in allowing Mario Kart to gather Nintendo characters consistently, rather than just featuring a few guests from time to time.

If Mario Kart Crossroads really is the next step for the franchise, fans might have a better sense of why it's taking Nintendo so long to release a new Mario Kart game . Blending all of Nintendo's biggest franchises into one racing game means designing a ton of new courses, drivers, and karts that represent The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Splatoon, Kirby, and any number of other potential Crossroads participants. At the same time, the wait for a game like that should be worth it. Mario Kart Crossroads has the potential to revitalize the franchise through new items and courses inspired by the breadth of Nintendo's library, so long as the rumors are true.

A new Mario Kart game is rumored to be in development.
