Nickel Creek Plots Extensive 2024 U.S. Tour

by Lorie Liebig October 27, 2023, 9:15 pm

Award-winning trio Nickel Creek is hitting the road again for a lengthy headlining tour next year. The band has added a stretch of 28 new live dates for 2024 in support of their latest record,  Celebrants .

Videos by American Songwriter

Bandmates Chris Thile , Sara Watkins , and Sean Watkins will kick off the trek with a performance in Iowa City, Iowa, on February 6. They’ll spend nearly three months traveling to cities across the U.S., including Indianapolis, Columbus, Jacksonville, and Buffalo, before taking the stage for a final performance in Little Rock on May 2.

These just-released show dates will help kickstart another new chapter for the beloved act. Earlier this year, the group made a long-awaited comeback onto the music scene with the release of  Celebrants . The captivating 18-track LP marked their first new full-length project in nine years.

Over the decades, Nickel Creek has returned from multiple hiatuses, allowing the three bandmates to pursue their own solo projects. Although nearly a decade has passed between their acclaimed fourth album,  A Dotted Line , and the arrival of  Celebrants , the gifted bluegrass-centered outfit sounds as cohesive as ever.

In case you didn’t think there was such a thing as progressive acoustic music, Nickel Creek are here to prove otherwise. And in case you don’t think that sounds like a genrre that’s all that viable in commercial terms, consider this, too; the trio’s self-titled album - produced by Alison Krauss - went platinum in the U.S., and they also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2003. They’d secured a place for themselves as the titans of their genre, but in 2007, they chose to disband so that their individual members could pursue other interests; Sara Watkins, for instance, went on tour with The Decemberists. Earlier this year, though, the three-piece announced that they planned to release a new album, A Dotted Line, at the start of April, followed by a U.S. tour to support it. They’re in the thick of that as we speak, playing with a stripped-down lineup and affording equal representation to each of their albums across the setlists. Their next step is to schedule some European dates, where their fanbase is considerably more niche; if intimate solo shows that Sara Watkins played on these shores during their break are anything to go by, though, there’s certainly an audience for them here.

Nickel Creek Expand 2023 Headlining Tour

Nickel Creek Expand 2023 Headlining Tour

Nickel Creek has announced that they have added several additional stops to their expansive 2023 tour. In February, the Grammy-award winning trio shared that they would be hitting the road on April 15, following the release of Celebrants– the band’s fifth studio project and first new album since 2019. The group originally planned to wrap their U.S run on June 17, after a sold-out three-hitter at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colo. The amended tour schedule will take the band from coast-to-coast, with 22 new dates set throughout July and into October.

The first new show on the roster will take place on July 7, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Ore., and will feature support from singer-songwriter Monica Martin. On July 8, Nickel Creek will head over to Bend, Ore. for a one-night-stand at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. On July 11, the trio will take the stage in Reno, Nev. for a show at the Grand Sierra Resort before heading over to Salt Lake City, Utah for a set on July 12. Beginning on July 19, they will embark on a tight run of newly added dates in Michigan, Ontario, and North Carolina. On July 24, they will play The Coves Amphitheater in Union Hall, Va. and, on July 27, they will head over to Lafayette, N.Y., for a show at the Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards.

The ensemble will pick back up with more new dates on October 6, with an appearance at the Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif. On October 10 and 11, they will take the stage with Hawktail for back-to-back sets at The Theatre At Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Then, they will finish out the month with additional shows in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. They will close out the tour with two nights in the Lone Star State, where they are scheduled to play at Majestic Theatre in Dallas, on October 20 and finishing things off at the Moody Amphitheatre at Waterloo Park on October 21.

VIP and GA tickets for the newly added tour dates will go on-sale Thursday, March 23, at 10 a.m on the band’s website.

GRAMMY Award-winning trio, Nickel Creek-mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins-will continue their extensive headline tour through the fall with newly confirmed shows at Los Angeles' Theatre at Ace Hotel (two nights), Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, St. Paul's Palace Theatre, Denver's Mission Ballroom, Santa Barbara's Granada Theatre, Dallas' Majestic Theatre and Austin's Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park among many others. See below for complete itinerary.

Tickets for the new shows will be available for pre-sale starting tomorrow, March 22 at 10:00am local time with general on-sale following this Friday, March 24 at 10:00am local time. Full details can be found here .

The tour-their first as a group since 2014-adds to a landmark year for Nickel Creek, who will release Celebrants, their first new album in nine years, this Friday, March 24 via Thirty Tigers.

Their fifth studio album, Celebrants marks a highly anticipated return for the beloved trio and explores the inherent dynamics of human connection. Across the 18 tracks, the trio addresses love, friendship and time with lyrics both poetic and plain-spoken, as they see bridges built, crossed, burned and rebuilt.

Recorded at Nashville's RCA Studio A, the album was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Grace Potter, Weezer) and features Mike Elizondo on bass.

Ahead of the release, Nickel Creek has unveiled three album tracks: "Where The Long Line Leads," "Holding Pattern" and "Strangers," of which Billboard praises, "highlights their unfettered harmonies and years-forged, tight-knit playing."

Additionally, Paste declares, "their instruments and voices alternately blend and shine...it's a joy to have the gang back together" and Brooklyn Vegan proclaims, "a propulsive track that finds the band's indie-friendly bluegrass in fine form."

Reflecting on the project, the band shares, "This is a record about embracing the friction inherent in real human connection. We begin the record yearning for and pursuing harmonious connection. We end the record having realized that truly harmonious connection can only be achieved through the dissonance that we've spent our entire adult lives trying to avoid."

Together a sum of more than their staggering parts, Nickel Creek revolutionized bluegrass and folk in the early 2000s and ushered in a new era of what we now recognize as Americana music. In a 2020 retrospective entitled, "The Year Folk Broke: How Nickel Creek Made Americana The New Indie Rock," NPR Music praised, "20 years ago this month, an album arrived that seemed to speak all these languages at once: unafraid to push the boundaries of its primary genre, and packing the musical chops to bring such an eclectic vision to life.

Behind it were three musicians just barely old enough to vote" and continued, "That makes Nickel Creek and its unofficial debut a critical point along a storied timeline, one whose innovations offer countless connections between the genre's origins and its future. Once dubbed 'progressive newgrassers,' the three musicians now fit firmly within the ranks of Americana music-however nebulous, layered and diverse that realm may be. They have only themselves to thank."

After meeting as young children and subsequently earning the respect of the bluegrass circuit for a decade, the trio signed with venerable label, Sugar Hill Records, in 2000 and quickly broke through with their Grammy-nominated, Alison Krauss-produced self-titled LP. Since that effort, the trio has released three more studio albums to date: 2002's This Side, which won Best Contemporary Folk Album at the 45th Grammy Awards, 2005's Why Should the Fire Die? and 2014's A Dotted Line.

Each member of Nickel Creek has also taken part in many outside projects over the years. Thile is a 2012 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and served as the host of the American radio variety show Live from Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion) from 2016 to 2020.

He has also released collaborative albums with world-renowned musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Brad Mehldau and Stuart Duncan as well as six studio albums with his Grammy-winning band, Punch Brothers.

Sean Watkins is a co-founder of Watkins Family Hour alongside Sara, who has released three albums and maintains a long-running collaborative show in Los Angeles. Sean has also released a string of solo albums, while Sara's extracurricular projects include the aforementioned Watkins Family Hour, as well as the Grammy-winning roots trio, I'm With Her, which she co-founded alongside Aoife O'Donovan and Sarah Jarosz.

Sara has released four studio albums and has contributed fiddle to recordings by artists like Phoebe Bridgers, the Killers and John Mayer.

Nickel Creek Stretch Out 2023 Headline Tour

Nickel Creek ‘s 2023 headline tour has been extended with newly confirmed shows in various cities, including Los Angeles, Portland, St. Paul, Denver, Santa Barbara, Dallas, and Austin. This tour marks their first as a group since 2014. The trio, composed of mandolinist Chris Thile , violinist Sara Watkins, and guitarist Sean Watkins, has won a Grammy Award.

This tour comes on the heels of their highly anticipated new album, Celebrants, which is set to release on March 24, 2023, via Thirty Tigers. The album, their fifth studio recording, explores the nuances of human connection, including themes of romance, friendship, and time. Across 18 tracks, Nickel Creek’s lyrics are both poetic and straightforward, as they examine the building, crossing, burning, and rebuilding of bridges. Celebrants was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Valentine and features Mike Elizondo on bass.

In anticipation of the album’s release, Nickel Creek has shared three tracks: “Where The Long Line Leads,” “Holding Pattern,” and “Strangers.”

Reflecting on the project, the band shares, “ This is a record about embracing the friction inherent in real human connection. We begin the record yearning for and pursuing harmonious connection. We end the record having realized that truly harmonious connection can only be achieved through the dissonance that we’ve spent our entire adult lives trying to avoid. ”

Great Shows. Good Times. Celebrating 15 Seasons

Nickel Creek

Nickel Creek

This event has passed, a reunion nine years in the making.

Nickel Creek is mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins. Together a sum of more than their staggering parts, the trio revolutionized bluegrass and folk in the early 2000s and ushered in a new era of what we now recognize as Americana music. After a nine year absence, the Platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning trio returned in 2023 with the highly-anticipated album,  Celebrants —a bounty of 18 disparate but loosely connected songs written collectively during a creative retreat in Santa Barbara in early 2021. The result is perhaps the most audacious yet accessible release of the Grammy-winning trio’s 34-year career. The entire enterprise is, naturally, shot through with the trio’s virtuosic picking and shiver-inducing harmonies. The lyrics—addressing love, friendship, time, and the universal travails of travel—combine the poetic and plain-spoken, hitting a sweet spot of ethereal and relatable as bridges are built, crossed, burned, and rebuilt. In celebration of the release, the trio will return to the road including three sold-out shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium with more dates to be announced soon.

Standing at Concerts

Standing and Dancing at Concerts: DPAC is proud to welcome all types of concerts to our stage. Sometimes during the course of a concert performance, audience members will show their enthusiasm by standing and dancing, especially when encouraged by the performers to do so. Unless directed by the show, we do not ever enforce a must sit policy at concerts. For most concerts, this would not be acceptable to the performers on stage who often love it when the crowd is moved enough by the performance to stand. This is especially true for rock shows and for seats closest to the stage.

Please know that DPAC does not have a “no standing” policy and in most situations will allow guests to stand even if they block the view of the stage for other guests. If your view is ever blocked by a standing or dancing guest, please contact an usher and we’ll attempt to find alternative seating.

Video Screens

Currently, this event has not approved using our video screens.  Please feel free to check back closer to the event for updates. If approved, we will post notice here.

For many concert, comedy, and special events at DPAC, we offer added views of the stage with two big screens (size: 16’ x 9’) hung to the sides of the stage or above the stage. These big screens can add to the visual experience of our concert, comedy, and special events and give guests seated farther from the stage what we like to call “a tenth row view”. Approval to use these screens always rests with the visiting show and about half of all concert and comedy events do use these screens.

Day tour to Perm-36 Gulag Camp

nickel creek on tour

► Tours ► Day Tours   ► From Perm   ► Day tour to Perm-36

nickel creek on tour

A day tour from Perm to the only museum dedicated to Soviet political repression actually located in a former Gulag camp - Perm-36. During the Soviet era many freethinkers, including writers, scientists and human rights activities, who were deemed a danger to the regime, were imprisoned here.

The Perm-36 camp was opened in 1946 and remained in use much longer than all other camps – it was only closed in 1988. Up until its closure, Perm-36 had two sections: the special security section and the strict security section.

Up until the 1970s the camp was primarily used for law enforcers found guilty of crimes. Only later did it become a camp for dissidents and political prisoners. Its location outside the village of Kuchino was especially chosen for a camp of this category. It ensured full isolation from the outside world and made any attempt at escape virtually impossible. In documents, the camp was referred to by the abbreviation VS-389/36 and so it gained its more common name of Perm-36, after the closest major city and the last two digits of its abbreviation.

Not ever prisoner survived until their release date. For example, the famous Ukrainian poet and human rights activist Vasyl Stus died here in 1985.

  • Barracks – there were originally four barracks, but only this one survives. It was built in 1946 and is a typical barrack found across many Gulag camps. The events in such famous books on the Gulag as ‘One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich’ and ‘The Kolyma Tales’ took place in barracks such as this one.
  • Isolation Ward – this was a special isolation ward located inside the camp to punish unruly prisoners.
  • Main alley – the trees lining this alley were planted by prisoners in 1948.
  • Camp facilities – the medical unit, the banya and laundry, the staff headquarters, the water tower and the workshops where the prisoners were forced to work.
  • Special regime section – this is the maximum-security part of the camp and prisoners here were forbidden contact via letters and meetings and were locked in a cell with only one break a day when they could walk in a closed courtyard for 45 minutes.
  • Courtyard for walking – this two-by-two metre area surrounded by barbed wire was the only fresh air some prisoners got.
