Without further ado, here are the best travel makeup bags because you deserve the best of the best, bb. Then, keep reading for everything you need to know to choose the best makeup bag for your needs.

Allow me to introduce you to my favorite travel makeup bag of all time: The Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag. Made of stretchy and durable neoprene , you can jam-pack a million and one things into this bb, and it'll zip right up. Take it from me, a beauty editor who has every beauty product in the book. Plus, two zip pouches are included, including one that's perfect for your makeup brushes .

Glowing Customer Review: "I wasn’t sure at first since it seemed like just another bag, but I was wrong. I use it literally every day and for travel. I love the feel of neoprene and it’s held up as I have tossed it from bag to bag, to luggage, to countertops, to car floors."

If you see me using this as a clutch IRL, keep walking! This beauty clutch is stylish and roomy enough to fit even the third or fourth blush you swear you need (relatable). My favorite part is obvi the design, but the soft buttery feel, as per reviewers, is a testament to the quality of vegan leather used.

Glowing Customer Review: “I’ve been eyeing this clutch for some time. I decided to purchase and am so happy I did. The vegan leather is buttery soft while still holding its structure open and closed. It holds a fair amount. I store my skincare and makeup for the day. I also love the simple and elegant aesthetic. I’m so happy I found this brand. It’s a great quality bag and well worth the purchase!”

It’s no secret that a majority of travel bags on the market more or less have the same type of vibe (aka neutral colors). If you’re looking for a bit more oomph, Cuyana’s offering includes two pebbled leather pouches: one larger bag for storing toiletries and tools, and a smaller pouch for smaller items like hair ties or bobby pins. The set is available in 14 leather shades and can also be monogrammed.

Glowing Customer Review: " What can I say? I like a pop of color when it comes to my accessories, and the same goes for my travel makeup bags. I love that this pick from Cuyana has so many different shades to choose from, is made of leather, and comes in a set of two."

If your travel makeup bags tend to look dingy and stained after a few trips, you’ll be happy to know this one is made with a faux leather exterior that is essentially the antithesis to all of that. First of all, it’s sturdy and structured, so it won’t get crushed and dinged up in your suitcase , but it can also easily be wiped down if it gets makeup or dust on the outside from traveling.

Glowing Customer Review: “The bag is incredibly stylish and comes in a variety of colors and patterns to suit anyone's taste. The material is high quality and easy to clean, so it always looks great no matter how often I use it. Another great thing about this makeup bag is that it's versatile enough to use for other purposes as well.”

This hanging cosmetics bag is surprisingly spacious and honestly just excellent for organizing in a hotel or Airbnb bathroom. Just unzip the sides, and you’ll find a hook so that you can hang this portable organizer on the back of a door, towel hook, or in your closet. The middle opens up to four waterproof and transparent pockets for your toothbrush, foundations, face oil , etc.

Glowing Customer Review: "The toiletry bag is very spacious yet easily fits into most luggage. The removable plastic pouch lets you conveniently store liquids and carry them separately. Highly Recommend."

This soft (yet structured) makeup train case is actually super similar to the cases used by professional makeup artists. It has adjustable, removable dividers (so you can organize your products in the slots however you want), along with a zippered side pocket, four elastic pouches for your brushes (or mascaras, lipsticks, eyeliners , etc.), and a flap that flips over and velcros everything snugly in place.

Glowing Customer Review: “This makeup bag has so many different compartments, as well as a velcro pouch that fits all your brushes, tweezers, or lip liners. I love this bag because if you have certain eyeshadow palettes that don’t fit, you can move around the sections and rearrange it to your liking.”

I hate having to rummage through my travel makeup bag for eons to find what I’m looking for. So, obviously, I was elated when I saw this clear Calpak makeup case, which makes finding the one brown lip pencil you brought take only a few seconds. It’s quite spacious, thanks to the two transparent compartments that give you plenty of packing options (i.e., I love putting skincare on one side and makeup on the other). And because it’s made with a faux-leather lining around the edges, it doesn’t get misshapen from all the flopping around in your suitcase.

Glowing Customer Review: “I had no idea how convenient I’d find this bag. Now I need it in every size! Being able to see exactly what I’m hunting for before digging for it? Game changer.”

I like to travel ~in style~ and also make sure everyone knows which bag is mine on the girls’ trip, which is why I love this personalized makeup bag. You c an add a custom monogram, including your initials or a cute little emoji , that’s hand-painted to the exterior or in gold or silver foil on the handle. But style aside, this bag is also A+ for travel, thanks to its semi-clear case that makes digging for your products way easier.

Glowing Customer Review: “This vanity is very well made and elegant looking. I love the see-through sides and the classic colored top. The carry handle works great and the case holds a lot. A nice travel staple.”

If you just want to throw your makeup into a bag and move on with your life, then you’ll prob appreciate this drawstring makeup pouch. It flattens out to act as a mat to lay out all of your products while you’re doing your makeup. Then, when you’re done, just pull the drawstring for the bag to close. And if there are any messes or spills, toss the pouch in the wash (ahem, this polyester material is easy af to clean).

Glowing Customer Review: “Such a great concept. Just throw your makeup and brushes in the bag, drawstring, and go! So easy to open, lay out, and organize at your destination and have everything right at your fingertips.”

My mom has been using this pouch for decades and for good reason: It’s petite enough to fit in your weekender bag or tote bag, but also large enough to fit your lipsticks and compact mirrors. And yup, it’s super durable, per the fact that my mom’s been using the same one (!) all this time since she just wipes down the water-resistant vinyl material.

Glowing Customer Review: “A classy classic statement clutch is what every fashionista needs. It’s waterproof and quickly identifiable in your purse or luggage. The downside to buying this item is that I have to replace it often because my daughter, sister, and friends keep taking mine! LOL.”

Glossier The Beauty Bag

The Beauty Bag

Glossier may be known for its dewy serum and moisturizing lip balms , but they ~did the thing~ with this massive makeup bag. I mean, I can fit all my brushes, curl creams , and skincare essentials sitting upright in this spacious tote, meaning less spilling and toppling over for my liquids. Plus, it’s got tons of compartments to tidily store all of my products, like the removable inner pouch where I tend to put lip glosses and eyeliners.

Glowing Customer Review: “This bag is perfect! I was a little worried it would be a bit too big because I wanted a nice little cute bag and I didn't have a lot of makeup. However, it turned out fine! I am so excited to use this bag and tote it around with me everywhere!”

line break

You don’t need a makeup bag, necessarily, but y ou might seriously appreciate it to help organize your stuff, especially while traveling. Instead of scattering your makeup, skincare, and hair products throughout your suitcase or weekender bag, compiling it all into an organized makeup pouch can save you a lot of time and energy. But you also might prefer to store your daily makeup or skincare favorites in a makeup bag even when you’re at home. Which brings us to…

How to choose the best makeup bag

line break

Determine the size you need

If you’re an overpacker and tend to bring your entire makeup and skincare routine when you travel, look for a large makeup case that can fit everything (possibly even one that sits upright to save space for liquid products). But if you’re the type of person who can get by with a few swipes of mascara and concealer, you'll probably prefer a mini makeup bag or compact pouch that won’t take up as much space in your bag.

Consider your organization levels

Luckily, there are a million and one different types of makeup bags, so it all depends on how you like to organize . If you don’t care about your things being all over the place, then you kinda don’t need a bajillion pockets. But if you like things to be neat and tiny, then a makeup bag with lots of compartments and dividers is a must. For those withs lots of products, compartments and zippers will be your new BFF—whereas, if you only have a few, a simple zip pouch will do the trick.

Focus on the material

If you’re prone to spills and mess, you’ll def want a makeup bag that’s easy to clean , which means you should look for a water-resistant pouch that can be wiped down. But it all depends on your ~vibes~ from there. If you want something you can throw in the wash, try a canvas makeup bag. PVC, nylon, and vinyl makeup bags can be wiped down, along with leather and faux leather (which also have the benefit of looking cute in your hotel bathroom shelfie).

Also, consider if you want a soft or sturdy bag. If you travel with your whole vanity, then you should consider a soft bag, as they’re easier to stuff and overpack. A sturdy bag, however, is great if you travel a lot, don’t want your bag to be squished, or if you want your products to arrive as safely as possible. Bc arriving with a shattered highlighter is legit tragic.

How do I pick the best makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

Finding a makeup bag that fulfills your long list of needs can be done. When on the hunt, prioritize space. If it can’t fit all of our products then what’s the point? It’s best to look for a bag that caters to your specific makeup and preferences. Bigger full-sized items can be easily thrown in a spacious bag, whereas smaller items such as lipsticks, liners, individual shadows, etc. beg for a bag with pockets and dividers as opposed to a catch-all. At the end of the day, a makeup bag should keep you organized, happy, and sane!

What’s the best makeup bag material?

hearst owned

Anything water resistant! Most makeup bags are lined with water-resistant or waterproof materials such as clear plastic, nylon, or polyester.

How should I clean my makeup bag?

hearst owned

Beauty lovers know the danger of a loose cap. Though spills may be unavoidable, cleaning them up is something we all must learn to master. Turns out the secret is not so secret: antibacterial household spray! Any Clorox, Microband, or Cleansmart spray, etc. will do the trick. Tip: Make sure to bring makeup pads on every expedition, in case a spill decides to attempt destruction. Shop our favorite antibacterial reusable cotton rounds here .

How should I organize my makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

When organizing your makeup for a trip, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Try to leave full-sized products at home. If it's a short enough trip, go for the minis.
  • If you can, pick the combined products (for example: A bronzer + blush compact rather than bringing both bronzer and blush).
  • Check the amount of product you have left before packing. Arriving at your destination with only a drop left isn’t doing anyone any good!
  • If you don’t have mini versions of your fav moisturizers, primers, setting spray, shampoo, or conditioner, don’t fret. You can find travel-sized bottles here , which can save you from a last minute trip to the drug store! Plus, they’re TSA approved.
  • When packing, it’s helpful to do your full routine start-to-finish and place each beauty item in your makeup bag, and nothing else. This way, you can avoid the unnecessary-yet-tempting products!

Lay-n-Go Cosmo

Why It's Worth It: For the person who can't stand pawing through their makeup bag in search of an almost non-existent eyeliner pencil stub, the Lay-n-Go Cosmo will change everything. A raised lip on the edge of the mat keeps products from rolling away, a zippered pocket for safe storage, and a built-in elastic strap that acts as a brush holder. Oh, and it's machine-washable in case of spills.

Travelon’s Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag packs an impressive punch for being so small. Its six pockets keep everything where you need it—including an RFID-blocking passport and card interior organizer—while a tethered key caddy with an LED light eliminates that dreaded “can’t-find-it-in-my-bag” feeling. The 5-Point Anti-Theft security system protects against theft threats with slash-resistant fabric, lockable straps and secure zipper pulls. Not only will you feel safe wearing this bag, but thanks to its 13 colors and prints, you’ll also look stylish anywhere your trip may take you.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 14 x 5.5 inches | Weight: 1.6 pounds | Materials: Raffia, leather

For parents or travelers who need to tote a lot of stuff on the go, a larger bag might be in order. Hobo’s Sheila Large Satchel offers nice organizational features and high style points. It’s made of a lightweight woven raffia with leather trim for added durability, plus its six interior pockets, key lanyard and accessible side exterior pocket are perfect for storing smaller items you may need throughout the day. Its main compartment is quite roomy, easily fitting a laptop, kid’s tablet, diaper wipes, snacks, toys, a backup outfit and more. The flexibility of its 3-in-1 styling really stands out—the adjustable strap can be worn as a crossbody, shortened for a shoulder bag or simply removed to transform into a classy top handle bag for a night out after the kiddos go to sleep.

Best Crossbody Bag For Beach Trips

Large and easy to wear for sandy days in the sun.

Urban Outfitters

Baggu Large Nylon Crescent Bag

Dimensions: 10.5 × 19.5 × 5.25 inches | Weight: N/A (not listed) | Materials: 100% recycled nylon

A beach bag calls for some pretty specific features: it needs to be durable and water-resistant, it should be big enough to hold bulky towels and ideally, it has a simple shape so sand won’t get lodged in the nooks and crannies. After much research, the Baggu Crescent Bag fits the bill. Its adjustable strap can be worn across the chest or as a tighter-fitting shoulder bag, the large size is roomy enough for a couple towels and a change of clothes and the zippered interior pocket keeps your wallet and keys secure. The quick-drying ripstop nylon is not only recycled, it’s also durable enough to withstand the windiest—and wettest—of beach days. Consider adding a few of Baggu’s fun printed flat pouches for additional organization.

Best Crossbody Bag For Active Trips

A durable sling with no detail spared, nomatic navigator sling 6l.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 9 x 4 inches | Weight: 1.3 pounds | Materials: 80% nylon, 20% polyester

Whether you’re hiking, biking or riding the metro, the Navigator Sling from Nomatic offers durability, storage and some impressive features. There’s a water bottle holder that zips away when not in use, a molded EVA back panel for wearable comfort and breathability, a tamper-resistant zipper and tech features like built-in tablet storage, an RFID-blocking pocket for your cards and a cord-pass through for charging your devices in different pockets. If you’re running or moving around a lot, there’s also a stabilizer strap that clips on to keep the sling even more secure to your body. Unlike some sling styles, this bag has multiple zippered storage compartments, the main one opening extra wide for easier access.

Most Versatile Crossbody Bag For Travel

Four ways to wear it.

Lo & Sons

Lo & Sons Waverley 2 in Nappa Leather

Dimensions: 5.6 x 8 x 2 inches | Weight: 0.6 pounds | Materials: Nappa, Saffiano or cactus leather

When you’re on the go, sometimes the last thing you want is to ruin the flow of the day by making a pit stop at the hotel to change out a bag before dinner. We like the Lo & Sons Waverley for its inventive versatility that adapts to your needs. The minimal leather design has an adjustable strap that can be worn 4 ways: as a hands-free belt bag, a longer crossbody, a casual shoulder bag or an elevated clutch with (or without) a wristlet. The main compartment is large enough for the essentials and the zippered inner pocket keeps smaller items secure no matter where your day—or night—takes you.

Over 22,500 reviewers agree: the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is sleek, lightweight and versatile enough to be worn just about anywhere your travels take you. It has a water-repellant nylon exterior and one main compartment, three mesh interior pockets for added organization and a back zipper for your phone or cards. Its adjustable strap can tighten for comfortable wearing around your waist or it can be extended as a crossbody sling. With a 1L capacity, this bag is definitely on the smaller side, so you might want to consider their larger 2L size if you need more space.

Best Crossbody Bag For Men

Rugged looks for when you're on the go, cotopaxi coso 2l hip pack.

Dimensions: 11 x 7 x 3 inches | Weight: 10 ounces | Materials: Recycled nylon, recycled polyester

This easy-wearing hip pack from Cotopaxi combines an urban rugged look with smart storage solutions. The recycled nylon exterior is durable with a matte TPU coating, making it water-resistant and easy to clean, while a fleece interior pocket stores your phone or other small devices without any scratch risk. There’s multiple grab handles for easy carrying, secure pockets for smaller items and in addition to the main zippered compartment, the exterior front flap pocket can store a rolled-up lightweight jacket when you get warm on the go. G-hooks on both sides can be adjusted for customized storage and it can be comfortably worn as a crossbody on the front or back, or around the waist as a belt bag.

Best Leather Crossbody Bag For Travel

Three storage sections in a minimal package, quince italian leather triple compartment crossbody.

Dimensions: 7.8 x 9.5 x 3 inches | Weight: 1.54 pounds | Materials: Leather

Quince’s smooth Italian leather crossbody might look simple from the outside, but there’s actually a lot of unexpected storage inside. The bag has three main compartments—two zippered sections flanking one open area that closes with snaps—plus three internal zippered pockets to take your organization a step further. It also comes with two detachable straps that allow for crossbody or wristlet wear. Quince is known for its fair prices and ethical manufacturing process, and if that’s not impressive enough, the brand also offers a generous 365-day return policy.

I’m a Frequent Flier, and I Never Leave Home Without This Spacious, Sleek Weekender Bag

It’s been my go-to carry-on for 3 years — and it never fails to get compliments.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

“I love your bag,” has become a frequent compliment from fellow travelers or plane seatmates over the past three years since I first started traveling with a July Carry All Weekender Duffle Bag — and I travel a lot.

At first, I thought they were admiring my crossbody or roller bag but I quickly became accustomed to the direction of their praise. That’s because I love the bag too.

July Carry All Weekender Duffle

I'm super picky when it comes to my personal items for carry-on — especially as I only ever travel with a carry-on — so it's important that all my bits are organized at all times. Over the last three years of using the bag, I’m still pleasantly surprised at how spacious the bag is and how durable it is despite how much I stuff into it.

At 10.5 inches by 18 inches by 8.5 inches with a capacity to hold 28 liters, it’s really the perfect size — big enough to fit all my larger personal items, including a 16-inch padded laptop sleeve compartment, but divided enough to keep my smaller items organized, with internal zipped pockets ideally sized for documents, medicine, chargers, or small notebooks, an internal key hook for easy access to keys, a front access zip pocket with two internal compartments, and the brand’s QuickPass hidden pocket with magnetic closure for secure yet seamless access to travel documents.

Jillian Dara

Even though it offers the two exterior pockets, the bag doesn’t appear bulky whatsoever — in fact, it’s the opposite, sitting sophisticated and stylish atop your rolling carry-on via its convenient, pass-through band. The minimal design is emphasized by its weighted 420D twill nylon fabric that’s lightweight (only 2.2 pounds), water-resistant, and further premiumized by the leather handles and trim.

I have the duffle in the forest green color, but the three other hues available are equally as classic and flattering — French navy, midnight black, and chalk, an off-white with cream and gray undertones. I find my darker color never to have shown stains (reviews say any scuffs on the chalk color are easily spot-cleaned out), the gunmetal zips are as undemanding to zip as day one and even if I had a glitch, the luggage brand’s five-year warranty really assures me that this bag can be my favorite forever.

In addition to rolling my July Carry All Weekender around the airport by using its pass-through band, there are also two other ways to carry it with a handle palm carry as well as an adjustable shoulder strap. I find the handle palm carry the most comfortable but that’s likely because I’m always overpacking the bag and find it less strenuous to carry this way.

Don’t take my word for it? The July Carry All Weekender has 299 five-star reviews with a user percentage of 98 percent who would recommend the product. Crystal H. writes, “I adore this bag so much. It's exactly the "I-need-a-little-more-space-than-my-carry-on-allows" bag that I need for my cross-country hauls.” Liam P. adds, “It’s so organized, the passport pocket is really helpful and accessible side zip perfect for more documents. Has made a big difference to traveling. Fits under the seat on the plane easily.”

Perhaps what I most love about the July Carry All Weekender is its ability to effortlessly elevate my casual plane look. Even if I’m in sweatpants or leggings, I still receive compliments on its streamlined appearance — and who doesn’t love some unsuspecting kindness from a stranger when you least expect it?

When it comes to finding an amazing travel tote or the best work bag for women, functionality is key. For those of you unfamiliar with the brand, Lo & Sons makes stylish, travel-friendly bags that are optimized for space and organization. Founder and CEO Helen Lo originally launched Lo & Sons with the mission of creating a travel bag that alleviated the back pain she developed in her mid-60s. This sparked the idea that birthed the brand's debut product: The O.G. Overnight Bag , a smartly designed shoulder bag with a suitcase-handle sleeve for easy transportation.

Whether you're preparing for a trip overseas or looking for something that can hold a weekend's worth of outfits, we can help you choose which bag to buy.

Edgemont Convertible Backpack Tote

big travel cosmetic bags

With its structured form, multiple well-designed compartments, and ability to convert between two different styles in just a few steps, this backpack tote boasts value that far outweighs its $128 price tag. It works great as a work-to-gym bag and fits all the essentials for both purposes. All the while it still feels fairly light and very comfortable on my back or shoulder.

Its stash pockets, perfectly placed under the arm, make it easy to access IDs, keys, and MetroCards, and are one of my favorite features of the bag. I also love that the material is eco-friendly and water-resistant, and specifically the Navy Camo pattern is subtle but stylish.  — Connie Chen, former Insider Reviews senior reporter

The O.G. Overnight Bag

big travel cosmetic bags

Editor's note: This review was of the first O.G. Overnight Bag. You can now purchase the updated O.G. 2, which features similar specs.

The O.G. Overnight Bag quickly became my go-to personal item on flights back. Its suitcase-handle sleeve is a game-changer; I could rest assured that when I placed my personal item atop my carry-on it wouldn't fall off. Inside the bag are some even cooler features, like a padded laptop sleeve, a separate shoe compartment, and tons of pockets for organizing everything from my pens to my earbuds. The O.G. also comes with a messenger strap for easy and comfortable carrying across your body or over your shoulder, and it's made of durable and water-resistant nylon, so there's no need to worry about it being ruined by coffee spills or bad weather. — Ellen Hoffman, former Insider Reviews executive editor

With all of all the smart features, I've found I'm able to fit just about everything I need for a weekend away in this one bag, unless it's winter (sweaters and coats are just too bulky). Even though the bag is so structured, it's really lightweight, making it really easy to carry, even when loaded with clothing and toiletries. While pricey, I think it's worth the $295 investment. — Remi Rosmarin, former Insider Reviews reporter

Catalina Deluxe Large Weekender Travel Bag

big travel cosmetic bags

I took the Catalina Deluxe Weekender Large Travel Bag on a couple of short road trips a while ago. Packing a bag is easier than lugging a suitcase around, but I usually travel with the weekender version of this blue and white striped nylon Baggu tote . It's weightless and holds a lot, but it lacks structure and organization.

By comparison, Lo & Son's weekender is made out of thick canvas — it's heavy duty, but can be folded when not in use. I have yet to max out the large bag on a weekend trip, even with packing sweaters and bulkier items. If I were traveling to a warm-weather destination, the bag could easily fit a week's worth of clothes. The bottom compartment comes in handy for separating out shoes and heavier pieces of clothing, but I did find the zipper hard to maneuver when the bag was empty, since the weight of the canvas bag weighs it down. Overall, this is a well-made travel bag and one that I will definitely continue to use. — Lauren Lyons Cole, former director of personal finance

Waverley 2 Convertible Leather Crossbody

big travel cosmetic bags

Small but functional, this bag is perfect for taking on the go while running errands, exploring new cities, or toting around during the day. It's big enough to fit a phone, wallet, and other small essentials, plus the interior has three small card pockets that can help save some space if your wallet takes up too much room.

The best part of this bag, though, is the exterior — it can be worn four different ways! Adjust the straps to wear it as a crossbody, a belt bag, a shoulder bag, or a wristlet. I've worn this bag on days when I'm just walking around the city. The size is small enough to bear holding for long walks, but big enough to hold all the essentials for a casual weekend day. The light grey color is unlike any bag I've owned before, but it has a minimalist chic look that I'm excited to incorporate more for spring. — Remi Rosmarin, former Insider Reviews reporter

Claremont Leather Camera Bag

big travel cosmetic bags

I've had a DSLR camera for six years. During that time, I've probably taken it on vacation with me once or twice — and at least one of those times, it didn't make it out of my suitcase. The problem is that it's clunky, no lightweight or attractive travel purse fits it, and wearing it around my neck is not appealing. It also becomes a risk in museums, when I worry every time I lean over if it will swing into a neoclassical treasure like a cannonball.

Lo & Son's Claremont camera bag is a game-changer. It's attractive, lightweight, and built specifically to house and protect my DSLR as well as the other tourist essentials, like my passport and money in the easily accessed back pocket. Its organization is helpful but not overwhelming — meaning that I can convert it to a crossbody bag, or make full use of the SD memory card pockets and the soft and protective divider. — Mara Leighton, senior digital culture reporter

Hanover Deluxe Backpack

big travel cosmetic bags

Editor's note: Our review was of the original Hanover Deluxe backpack, you can now purchase the redesigned Hanover Deluxe 2, which features similar specs.

I was honestly shocked how much I was able to fit inside this backpack. There two side pockets and one exterior pocket, plus the main compartment has a removable insert designed to organize all your stuff. I was able to fit well over 20 items, including multiple outfits, a pair of shoes, laptop, Kindle, and random electronics and toiletries, with ease. On top of that, the memory-foam shoulder straps are very comfortable, so much so that I almost forgot I was carrying 15-20 pounds on my back. I'm not sure I'll ever use another travel backpack if I'm being honest. — Francesca Rea, Insider Reviews senior story producer

Rowledge Convertible Nylon Backpack Tote

big travel cosmetic bags

The Lo & Sons Rowledge Backpack marries style and function for one of the company's most in-demand bags to date (at its debut there was a waitlist). It does have a hefty price tag, but it has a lot going for it to justify the cost: It converts three ways so it can serve you whether you're in work mode, travel mode, or weekend mode. It has a laptop sleeve, key leash, and many other useful compartments, like exterior side pockets that can be unzipped to store your water bottle, or zipped up for a sleek, virtually invisible, look. I use it to commute to work so that I could ditch my gym bag. — Francesca Rea, former Insider Reviews senior story producer

Pearl Crossbody Bag and Clutch

big travel cosmetic bags

This leather crossbody looks small but holds everything I need to go out during the day. The main compartment located in the middle of the bag is perfect for items I need to access quickly, like my phone and wallet. Its smaller zippered pockets on the outside are optimal places for loose cash. It also includes this neat little leash to hook onto my keys. I hate digging for my house key in the bottom of my purse (especially when it's raining!), so this was perfect. The leather feels high-quality and I can tell it won't scratch easily. — Megan Foster, former Insider Reviews intern

A guide to the very best shopping in Moscow

Sep 17, 2019 • 5 min read

While shopping in GUM department store be sure to check out its famous glass roof © Popova Valeriya / Shutterstock

Shopping in Moscow can be quite a daunting experience – you can walk for miles without finding anything but mass-market brands and overpriced boutiques. But, if you do it right, it can also be quite fun. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your shopping trip in Moscow.

An interior view of a wide open mall, with a domed glass roof above.

Shopping malls

There are many shopping malls all around Moscow, but there three that double as bona fide tourist attractions: GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, all within walking distance from each other. GUM is one of the oldest department stores in the country. It’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.  Today it serves as a high-class shopping mall. There are plenty of luxury shops, a supermarket that sells lots of signature Russian goods and several places to eat. Head to the more expensive  Bosco Cafe with a Kremlin view or, for a budget option, try the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 . GUM also occasionally hosts contemporary art exhibitions in one of its three main aisles.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

TsUM  is another shopping mall from the pre-revolutionary times. It’s the most luxurious store in the city, famous for its paper bags that many Muscovites carry around or post pictures of on Instagram to let everyone know they shop there. Full of haute couture boutiques, TsUM also has a rooftop restaurant Buro , frequented by Russian celebrities. Tsentralny Detsky Mir  children's store is perfect if you are looking for a gift for a kid or want to check out its awesome viewing platform with good views over central Moscow. At just R50 per ticket it’s a steal.

Food stalls and markets

There are two food markets that are worth checking out in Moscow.  Danilovsky Market  became the trailblazer of Moscow’s foodie revolution when it got an uplift in 2017. As well as many trendy food stalls, the market also hosts lectures, film viewing and even theatre productions, and it recently opened an antiques section. It’s an architectural landmark, a masterpiece of late Soviet modernism that looks like a UFO. Food at  Usachevsky Market  tends to be a bit more pricey and upmarket. Both markets also sell plenty of fresh produce, local cheeses and cured meats.

An outdoor stall selling Russian dolls painted in bright reds and blues, some with recognisable figures on them, such as Donald Trump and Marilyn Monroe

Antiques and flea markets

Shopping can also be a way to get away from the major landmarks and explore some sights off the beaten path. Moscow’s #1 flea market is  Izmailovsky , located in and around the pseudo-historical complex 'Izmailovsky Kremlin' with its colourful walls and domes. Open daily, it’s best to come here on the weekend to catch better deals. Admittedly tacky, Kremlin has a handful of weird museums like the Vodka History Museum or Baba Yaga Museum (Baba Yaga is a Russian fairy tale character). Part of the market had been gentrified into creative cluster Vernissage , with hipster coffee shops, various workshops and Svalka , an enormous two-floor secondhand shop with everything from used books to vintage clothing.

For high-class antiques, rare books and icons head to Antikvarnaya Lavka (Antique Store) just off Bolshaya Nikitskaya street (5 Kalashny Pereulok). Here you can snag a real masterpiece – a painting or a sculpture – but the prices are quite steep.

Four great day trips from Moscow

Russian memorabilia including a picture of politicians Brezhnev and Honecker, three small trucks and a bust of Lenin

If you are looking for a more authentic place with less hustle, one option is the antiques market on the premises of vodka distillery Crystal (4 ul Samokatnaya), which you can reach by taking tram 20 to Samokatnaya ul from the exit of metro Chkalovskaya. The market is located in the basement of one of the red-brick factory buildings. There are plenty of antiques, books and various Soviet-time memorabilia, such as Stalin and Lenin busts. While at Crystal, be sure to check out great works of street art – they are all around the factory premises.

For die-hard antique collectors there’s also a place right outside of Moscow – Novopodrezkovo market (also know as Levsha market). Take a suburban train from Leningradsky station to Novopodrezkovo (approximately half an hour), cross the tracks to the other side and there you’ll find it – a treasure trove of used books, vinyl records, clothing, paintings and antique furniture.

Where to shop for Russian designs

Gosha Rubchinskiy might be the only Russian clothing designer of world renown, especially after his collaboration with Kanye West, but there are many more up-and-coming fashion stars worth checking out. One of the places to do it is KM20 , the place Moscow fashionistas, with streetwear brands from all over the world and a lot of very rare items. There's also one of the best vegetarian cafes in Moscow on second floor.

GUM shopping mall has a two-storey store devoted to Russian designers –  Sektsiya (Section). Section sells products made by 50 Russian brands, from accessories to Heart of Moscow souvenir pins. Plus there’s a bar overlooking the Red Square.

If you are not into high fashion, but still interested in getting a cool outfit with Cyrillic script, check out the creative cluster centred around two abandoned factories: Flakon and Khlebozavod . One of the biggest stores is Zaporozhets Heritage  at Flakon , which sells clothing and accessories styled after various Soviet pop culture icons. The northern part, Khlebozavod, hosts several shops like Yunost  and Khlebny  that take a more punk-rock approach to streetwear. After shopping, have a pint at a great local craft beer bar Svoboda  or a coffee at Floo .

Sputnik 1985 is a Russian clothing brand specialising in hoodies and hats with quotes in Cyrillic and retro prints. The store is located in a courtyard on Pokrovka street (19 Ulitsa Pokrovka).

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

This Airline is Now Charging Peak and Off-Peak Checked Luggage Fees. Will Others Follow?

By Jessica Puckett

Image may contain Box Art Painting Plant Bed Furniture Person and Baggage

Bad news for the overpackers among us: It’s now even more expensive to check baggage on one of the most popular airlines in the US .

Following a recent spate of US airlines raising their checked bag fees in early March, JetBlue is once again raising its prices for the service. Under the airline’s latest policy, JetBlue plans to charge as much as $50 for the first checked bag and as much as $70 for the second bag during “peak” travel periods, including the majority of this summer .

A JetBlue spokesperson told Condé Nast Traveler in March that raising checked baggage fees is one step the airline is taking to help return the company to profitability and cover the increased costs of transporting bags. “By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone,” the spokesperson said, adding that the first checked bag is free for JetBlue Plus cardmembers, and Mosaic customers can check two bags free of charge.

For everyone else, here's what you should know about JetBlue's new checked bag fees—and whether or not other airlines might follow suit.

How does JetBlue’s new checked bag policy work?

The new fee policy operates on a sliding scale, with prices jumping during “peak” travel windows and dipping during times that are considered “off-peak.”

For most economy fares—including Blue, Blue Basic, and Blue Extra—the airline’s checked bag fees now range from $35 to $50 for the first checked bag, and from $50 to $70 for the second checked bag. The full pricing breakdown is available on the luggage page of JetBlue’s site.

According to JetBlue’s website, the airline considers the following days as peak travel periods over the next year: April 11 to April 29, 2024; June 20 to September 3, 2024; November 21 to December 2, 2024; December 19, 2024 to January 6, 2025; February 13 to February 24, 2025; and April 3 to April 28, 2025.

All other days are considered off-peak travel days. Looking at the date ranges for peak travel, they do fall during some busy stretches, including the spring break travel period, almost the entire stretch of summer travel, Thanksgiving week, peak Christmas travel , as well as President’s Day 2025.

Has this type of fee policy ever been used before?

“Variable pricing is hardly new,” says Gary Leff, a travel specialist who writes the aviation blog View From the Wing . “It’s just unique for checked baggage.”

Some airlines use a sliding scale of fees for extra charges like seat selection and pricing for award trips using frequent flier miles —the more in-demand the route or travel window, the higher the cost for these services. “Some of the ultra low-cost carriers vary their bag fees as well, but it's not rigidly spelled out in the same way,” says Brett Snyder , president of Cranky Concierge , a firm that provides travel planning and airline assistance.

Will other airlines adopt JetBlue’s new checked baggage fee policy?

It’s not yet clear if charging extra for checked luggage during peak travel periods is something that will spread throughout the industry. But airlines do tend to copy each other in these areas: When one carrier raises fees, others generally follow in a domino effect—like travelers saw happen with baggage fees in early March.

“I would never be surprised to see an airline adopt a new method of charging fees that would allow it to increase revenues,” says Snyder. “This plan allows JetBlue to keep bag fees at the same low level as other airlines during off-peak times. But during peak times, it can charge more and make more money since it knows people are more likely to have to travel anyway.”

But since most major air carriers raised the cost of checking a bag only weeks ago, they might be slower to adopt JetBlue’s model, possibly waiting and watching to see how it performs. “JetBlue was first with the most recent spate of baggage fee increases, just two months ago. Since the major carriers just increased bag fees after JetBlue did, I don’t expect them to follow suit at least right away,” Leff says.

Traveler reached out to major US airlines to ask whether they might adopt a sliding scale of fees in the future, but most declined to comment, and others did not respond by time of publication.

What do these fees mean for the industry, and how can travelers avoid them?

Checked bag fees are part of the bread and butter of airlines’ profits. US airlines collectively earned nearly $5.5 billion from checked bag fees in the first nine months of 2023 alone, according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics . During that time period, American Airlines brought in more than $1 billion in the charges just by itself.

Airlines want to keep these fees as profitable as possible. “There’s an argument for charging more for checked bags when the capacity of aircraft to carry them is limited, for instance on routes where people tend to check a lot of baggage,” says Leff. (For its part, JetBlue has said the price increases are in part due to higher wages and the surging price of fuel, among other inflationary pressures.)

If travelers want to avoid the sliding scale of fees, there are a few key points to pay attention to in JetBlue’s new policy. “There is a discount for booking checked bags in advance instead of waiting to do it until the last minute,” Snyder says. Under the new rules, passengers can save up to $10 if they pay for a checked bag more than 24 hours before departure (essentially, before check-in opens). “If someone has to check a bag, they should do it in advance. Otherwise, the only way to avoid this is by not checking a bag. That might mean stuffing everything into a carry-on , or looking into shipping services that send you baggage ahead of you,” Snyder says.

Russia’s main department store, the Moscow GUM is an ultimate architectural stunner, housing a variety of high-end boutiques. Built between 1890 and 1893 and known as the Upper Trading Rows until 1920, the legendary store is now home to over 200 boutiques selling a variety of brands: from luxury Dior to affordable Zara. Even if luxury shopping is not on your to-do list, the Moscow GUM is still worth a visit – the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square, offers a variety of tasty Soviet-style eateries and makes a fantastic view in the dark.

AFIMALL City

Somewhat farther from the city centre, AFIMALL City is a dramatically less crowded and very impressive shopping mall right in the heart of Moscow City Business District. Aviapark Shopping Centre

Aviapark

Of all the malls on the list, Aviapark takes the most time to get to, but Europe’s biggest mall is definitely worth the free shuttle bus ride. With over 500 stores, 80 eateries and a 17-screen cinema, all spread across the equivalent of 36 football pitches, Aviapark is officially the most popular shopping mall in Moscow. However, the major draw of the glass-roofed shopping centre is the 24-meter-tall pillar aquarium, filled with tropical fish.
