On April 26, 2018, Big Hit Entertainment released a trailer on their official YouTube channel announcing an upcoming world tour. The video revealed an initial schedule of 22 concerts across 11 cities, spanning Seoul to California, Ontario to London, Amsterdam to Paris, with more dates and venues said to be awaiting confirmation. The information was also posted on Big Hit's official website and across all their official social media platforms as well. After news of the world tour broke, multiple hashtags trended worldwide on social media, including the tour's namesake tag – #LOVE_YOURSELF, highlighting the level of anticipation surrounding the event.

Before the international leg of the tour started, Big Hit announced BTS wasn't going to give interviews during the tour, during their American leg they made a couple of exceptions adding two schedules. The first one a conversation with the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles where the group reflected in the message they want to give through music on September 10 and a performance in the popular TV show America's Got Talent thanks to an invitation by the famous model and host Tyra Banks recorded the same day and aired September 12 on NBC.

According to ticket resale site StubHub BTS was one of 2018's best selling concerts in the world, second to only Ed Sheeran. On October 7 it was estimated that BTS sold a total of 790,000 tickets, selling out all current concerts venues and with more dates expected to be added to the tour.

On August 4, Big Hit Entertainment confirmed all 90,000 tickets for the Seoul shows (August 25 and 26) were sold out after the second public sale on August 3. On August 17, it was announced that only from the first two concerts at the Seoul Olympic Stadium in Seoul, BTS was projected to make USD 8.4 Million (KRW 95 Billion) in ticket revenue alone. Dates for nine dome concerts in Japan were announced on July 30 across the group's social media platforms. In Japan, it came in at nineteenth overall for 2018 best selling concerts. In Singapore, tickets sold out in less than four hours.

Tickets went on sale May 5, 2018 for the Newark, Fort Worth, and Los Angeles shows and sold out in seconds. Due to the high demand, an additional date was added to the Los Angeles lineup, with tickets going on sale May 9, 2018. Tickets for the Oakland, Chicago, and Hamilton shows went on sale May 7, 2018. Tickets for the Hamilton shows sold out in just over an hour, with organizers for the Ontario stop, Core Entertainment, revealing they would have sold out faster if not for the strain put on Ticketmaster's online system due to the heavy influx of site traffic, the likes of which had not been seen for any ticketing held before All fourteen stops completely sold out. A fifteenth and final stop of the North American leg, Citi Field in New York, was later announced on August 8, making BTS the first Korean artist to hold a concert at a stadium in the United States. Tickets for the show sold out in under ten minutes. On September 9, Variety announced that BTS, and singer Elton John, were the top touring acts of Fall 2018 in the United States. According to StubHub, BTS entered the "highest-selling act" and "best-selling shows" lists with the "highest-selling average sales per show position". Yahoo Finance revealed that BTS were also the top-selling act and top-selling show artist in Canada for Fall 2018.

The London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris stops mark the group's first and biggest European headline shows to date. Tickets went on sale June 1, with the London dates selling out in two minutes, and the Berlin shows selling out in nine minutes.

Critical [ ]

The Love Yourself received positive reviews from critics. For the first concerts in America, local media reported in Los Angeles since the moment fans started to camp outside the Staples Center days ahead the concert. Philip Cosores from Uproxx described BTS' Staples Center 4 night concerts as "Enormous, multi-sensory experience" bringing an "Inclusive" and "Multicultural experience" where music is above any language barrier. Tiffany Taylor from The Hollywood Reporter noted for Billboard News the "Amazing choreography" praising the solo performances and energy of the fans as highlight of the night. Jim Harrington from The Mercury News referred to the Oracle Arena concert on Oakland as "the hottest concert of the year in the Bay Area" noting the solo performances as "witnessing seven individual stars, each of whom could enjoy a successful solo career." For the Chicago show critic Kim Youngdae stated their strengths were the dazzling group displays, the artistry in the solo numbers, and how immersive it was. Crystal Bell from MTV said about the tour, "BTS have created an experience so captivating, so inclusive, and so visually stunning that it’s cemented the boy band as one of the most vital acts in pop music today." The Quietus wrote about the European tour as " The show is about a search for self-identity. After two-and-a-half hours of costume changes, pulsing beats, soaring high notes and the impossible iconic beauty of their videos, BTS walk to the front of the stage in low-key jeans and T-shirts. As they sing the last song, ‘Anpanman’, which is about a new kind of superhero, we realise that their awkwardness and sensitivity is also the source of their strength."

The Denisonian rated the concert ten out of ten, stating the music, visuals, dancing, and fans is what made it a great experience. Vivid Seats named BTS the 2018 artist of the year, citing the group's history-making concert at Citi Field.

Accolades [ ]

The Love Yourself tour was nominated for three awards during ticket sale website Ticketmaster's year-end awards, winning two of them. The Ticket of the Year Award was awarded to BTS following a user poll by Ticketmaster, using a database of roughly 200 million people to determine the most popular touring act of 2018. In addition, BTS was awarded the French ticket of the year award, which pulled from data via French Ticketmaster sales. The tour was also nominated for the "Most Anticipated Event of the Year, 2019" award, but did not receive it. Love Yourself also won grand prize award at the 6th Edaily Culture Awards for Best Concert. The Seoul performances were popular among judges because, according to Kim Eun-koo of Edaily, they "created a new history [for] K-pop". The skill of the performers and popularity of the event were also cited as influences on the decision.

The extension is slated to start on May 4, 2019 in Pasadena, California and will feature concerts in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, including the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan.

Speak Yourself was first announced on February 19, 2019 through the Big Hit Entertainment YouTube channel, where a spot for the extension was posted. The video featured clips of the BTS members performing, with the title and dates for the tour written on top of them. That same day, Live Nation was revealed as the concert promoter, with tickets sold through Ticketmaster.

In North America, tickets sold out for all initial three dates in approximately two and a half hours. The Wembley Stadium stop sold out in 90 minutes and in France tickets sold out in about five and a half hours. Tickets went on sale in Brazil on March 11, 2019. • On October 9, Jungkook was performing while seated at the group’s October 9 concert in London. Following the rehearsal and sound check, Jungkook was lightly stretching in the waiting room when he collided with floor furnishings and suffered an injury to his heel. Medical staff immediately responded and performed the necessary treatment. The opinion of the medical team is that while the injury is not serious, performing choreography may do further damage to the injured area.

The 10 Most Beautiful Moments Of BTS’ Love Yourself Tour

bts love yourself tour taiwan

Big Hit Entertainment

The concept of Post-Concert Depression has often been used to describe the emotional comedown of seeing a live show, as the euphoria wears off and the reality of normal, everyday life sets in. But for the 40,000 fans who witnessed BTS ’ historic concert at Citi Field on Saturday night (October 6), a different emotion comes to mind: hope.

BTS ended the North American leg of their Love Yourself tour at the packed Queens stadium, a momentous first for a Korean act. And it was truly a night of celebration and reflection for the chart-topping group and their diverse fans (called ARMY). "This is only the beginning of our most beautiful moment in life," leader and rapper RM reminded the extremely amped crowd after kicking things off with the anthemic " Idol ," the group’s most recent, and most rambunctious, single.

Since making their debut in 2013, the seven members of BTS — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — have continued to defy the odds; shattering YouTube records, debuting atop the Billboard 200 twice , and revolutionizing the globalization of Korean music.

Seeing them live in concert, it's easy to see why.

With their Love Yourself tour, BTS have created an experience so captivating, so inclusive, and so visually stunning that it’s cemented the boy band as one of the most vital acts in pop music today. The two-and-a-half hour set featured highlights from the group’s Love Yourself era — and one fire medley (no pun intended) — weaving together an intimate narrative of love and acceptance through a mix of musical genres, crisp choreographies, colorful visuals, and undeniable charm.

Blame it on the chorus of voices singing "you've shown me I have reasons I should love myself" while hues of pinks and purples lit up the stadium, their echoes filling the air like a warm embrace. Or the way BTS themselves basked in the enormity of the moment, delivering fan service and finger hearts with complete sincerity. (Jimin was even moved to tears.) But it was impossible to leave Citi Field and not feel energized by it all.

BTS ask their fans to look inward, to take their universal message and reflect on their own state of being — to know that just because you don't love yourself today doesn't mean you can't love yourself tomorrow. In doing so, they acknowledge that a beautiful moment in life isn't just one moment, but rather a series of moments. So let's take a look at some of the most beautiful moments of the Love Yourself tour:

J-Hope set the mood

Bangtan's resident hype man and mood-maker, J-Hope, set the night off right with an exuberant performance of "Trivia 起: Just Dance." The funky, future bass track was the first of the night's solo stages and therefore had a lot to accomplish, maintaining the energy of the opener while also establishing the rapper as a dynamic force unto himself. Oh, and he can really bust a move.

Jungkook kept the party going

Youngest member Jungkook delivered a playful solo stage with "Euphoria," a dreamy pop song that really should have been a single with its radio-friendly EDM hook. Co-written by RM, the track is a bubbly ode to young love, and it was a confident showcase for Jungkook, who served vocals and choreography with staggering bravado.

Jimin made everyone swoon

"Serendipity," Jimin’s soft R&B ballad, put the performer’s fluid duality on full display, as he toed the line between sweet and sensual — his airy, ethereal vocals grounded by the sharp precision of his PG-13 moves.

RM channeled his idols

There’s something effortless about RM. His flow. His swagger. His unflappable leadership. It’s how he can get a crowd of thousands to their feet with nothing but a mic. As the group’s main rapper, RM's deep, easy flow and clever wordplay have become some of the most distinct aspects of the group's sonic DNA. And with "Trivia 承: Love," RM delivered both — a hype hip-hop track with deep emotional resonance, not unlike the work of his New York heroes. "The music born here changed my life," he said, "made me dream, and gave me a new life."

V's gravitational pull

BTS doesn’t have a central figure, but as a performer, V comes close. The vocalist has the ability to seduce an entire crowd with a single look. During his sultry performance of "Singularity," even the most subtle movements — a caress here, a glance there — were met with awe and fervent screams. It's this intimate relationship with the camera that makes him so fascinating to watch, his charisma pulling fans into his magnetic field one eyebrow quirk at a time.

Suga had something to prove

Known for his slick tongue technology , lead rapper and producer Suga is a bit of a chameleon. Case in point: "Trivia 轉: Seesaw," a standout performance that saw the rapper trade in his signature aggressive style for a melodic R&B flow, cool choreography, and a vibey disco beat. And with it, the complex performer turned his perceived weaknesses — his vocal ability and dancing prowess — into strengths before attacking the crowd with his electric verse in "Tear."

Jin's vocal talents soared

Fan chants are a typical part of the live experience in K-pop. But eldest member Jin received a special distinction on Saturday night, becoming the only member to inspire his own fan chant. As Jin sat behind the piano to deliver the opening verse of "Epiphany," a chorus of "KIM SEOKJIN" reverberated throughout the stadium. And the early praise proved to be well-earned. The crystalline pop-ballad was a sneaky show-stopper, with Jin's powerhouse vocals soaring into the night sky.

Jin might not be the group's flashiest member, but that's OK; Mr. Worldwide Handsome doesn't need much to stun everyone into silence.

The medley set the stadium ablaze

BTS may be one of the biggest acts in music at the moment, but Bangtan haven't forgotten their humble beginnings. The mid-show medley of "Boyz With Fun," "Attack On Bangtan," "Fire," "Baepsae," and "Dope" had the crowd on their feet as the group attacked the fan-favorite tracks with personality and precision.

Suga may or may not have spoiled their 2019 plans

Leave it to Suga to boast about the group's future accomplishments before they've even happened yet. During the members' final farewells to the crowd, the rapper assured fans that Citi Field was "just the beginning," before alluding to a potential U.S. stadium tour in 2019. "Maybe next year... I’ll leave that up to your guys’ imagination. For us, we dreamed a dream and you guys imagined it, and now we're here. Let’s see each other next year." That sounds promising.

RM brought the message home

What does it mean to love yourself? And more importantly, where does one even start? According to RM, these are questions no one has the answers to. The process of loving yourself is a journey that never really ends, but through music and through moments of togetherness, the answer becomes a little clearer.

"Through this Love Yourself tour, I am finding how to love myself," RM said as he addressed the crowd at Citi Field for the final time. "I didn’t know anything about loving myself, but you guys taught me through your eyes, through your love, through your tweets, through your words — you guys taught me, and I started to love myself. ... So I want to say one thing: Please use me, please use BTS, to love yourself."

Looking out at the sea of smiling faces in the crowd — faces of all ages and ethnicities, from all walks of life — there's hope that they will.

BTS Announce ‘Love Yourself’ World Tour

By Suzy Exposito

Suzy Exposito

Korean superstars BTS are set to kick off their Love Yourself world tour this August, opening with two dates in their home turf of Seoul.

After their August 25th and 26th shows in Seoul’s Jamsil Olympic Stadium, BTS will continue their world tour across major cities in North America and Europe, starting with three nights in Los Angeles. North American tickets will go on sale on May 5th and May 7th at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time.

“We have only released the concert schedule whose dates and venues have been confirmed, and will announce further schedules as they are confirmed later on,” said a representative of Big Hit Entertainment on Friday.

The tour follows the success of their 2017 EP, Love Yourself: Her , which has remained steadily on the Billboard 200 for 27 weeks and counting – a first for any K-pop artist. The next installment in their Love Yourself series, Love Yourself: Tear , is due for release May 18th.

Karissa | s. korea | english teacher, (let’s stay) young forever | bts love yourself tour in taiwan.

(This is probably going to be long because /feels/ … so tl;dr – I took a weekend trip and went to Taiwan to see my favorite kpop group BTS in concert. I was very close to the stage – and subsequently had the time of my life – and had great experiences meeting new people and being back in Taiwan!)

Okay, so you may be slightly confused seeing this post because, “Karissa, haven’t you already seen this concert (twice) before?” And the simple answer to that question is yes, I have haha. The only difference between this concert and the two I mentioned in my other post is that I flew to a different country for a weekend in order to attend it. Before you dismiss me as slightly crazy (which I myself can kindof admit to lol), let me talk a little about my rationale behind this adventure.

One of my resolutions for my second year here in Korea is to simply do everything I want to – living free without over-thinking, over-planning. I’ve never been an impulsive person, and doing things without a proper plan usually just adds fuel to my anxiety. After some thinking lately, however, I realized that the years of my youth will pass in a flash before my eyes if I keep living the way I have until now. So, I want to grow out of my old thinking habits by fully pursuing things I feel passionately about. Two of those things currently happen to be travelling and BTS… and so what more perfect way to kill two birds with one stone than to join them on their world tour, right?

mvimg_20181208_200746

하고싶은거 다해 | good words to live by, hopefully my words to live by

Originally, I didn’t think I would be able to attend any of BTS’s tour concerts outside of Korea; aside from the bloody ticket battles I would need to win, planning and travelling alone seemed too daunting of a task. So when the notice for the Taiwan concert ticketing came out, I didn’t think I’d actually be able to go… but I resolved to at least try for tickets anyways.

Now flash forward to the actual ticketing day – I was on call with my best friend from home and sweating from the pre-ticketing nerves. What happened next is still a blur to me, but generally, I think it went a little something like this:

  • Tickets go on sale at 12PM, and for this particular site, they weeded out scalpers by asking a verification question about BTS before allowing you to buy tickets
  • I get through the site with very little lag (which is very shocking) and answer the question correctly
  • The seat selection screen then pops up and I freak out; nothing seems to be sold out yet, so I click the section that I wanted the most
  • The system processes this and then somehow I have a ticket in my cart in that section, with a fairly good queue number to enter the venue
  • I freak out some more to my friend and question whether I should really go or not
  • With a little encouragement and a lot of adrenaline, I decide to just buy the ticket first before I lose it to the system timing out
  • My first credit card doesn’t go through, I freak out again and try a different one
  • The second card works and then I freak out because  I had actually just gotten a ticket
  • I think I screamed at this point, and then my friend screamed with me even if she couldn’t believe what I had just done LOL
  • Later I find out that tickets for both days of their concerts sold out within 2 minutes. 50,000 tickets… wow, I got insanely lucky

Anyways, by the end of that week, I had booked my flight ticket and airbnb in Taiwan. It didn’t feel like it was really happening though until I got to the airport and checked into my flight. I had left for the airport straight from work on Friday night, and until then, it felt like the end of any normal work week. When I finally arrived in Taiwan, it finally sank in that I had just 1) flown overseas just to see a concert for my favorite group, 2) come back to visit what I consider to be my second home, by myself for the first time, and 3) actually done this crazy dream-like thing. It was a very surreal feeling haha

img_20181208_085212

The next morning, I had to go to the venue to confirm my ticket, so I left my airbnb for an early brunch on the way. I found a quaint little cafe that had opened early, and the owner was very, very nice to me haha. Aside from the hospitality and delicious food, there’s always this strange sense of comfort I feel whenever I go back to Taiwan. I think this maybe stems from the sense of familiarity I feel due to visiting family there while growing up. This is the first time I’ve been in Taiwan on my own though, so it was fascinating going around to places I’d never been to before and getting by with my own abilities haha.

mvimg_20181208_095522

Arriving at the venue, my first thought was, “Wow… this place is huge” – the concert was taking place at a baseball stadium, and there were so many people everywhere. After I picked up my ticket, I went to queue for merchandise that I wasn’t able to buy when I went to the other concerts. And as you can see below, the line was  insane ; I couldn’t even count how many times it wound around. Although the wait was long, thankfully the weather decided to be kind on me and not rain (just like the Seoul concerts, the rain held out until the end of the concert ㅠㅠ), and I met some really nice people in line who chatted with me. I also managed to meet with some online fans who were from Singapore! They were really friendly, and it was so nice to have their company before the concert began 🙂

img_20181208_103753

I got a standing section ticket this time, so we had to go and get in line at a certain time by entry queue number. Thankfully, the line went fast and I made friends with two fans in my section; we chatted to kill time while waiting, and I think I either confused or surprised them both when I explained my background (Taiwanese-American who can speak Chinese and English, but currently lives in Korea and can understand Korean as well? haha). We were all so excited to be in our section, though – we were maybe only 20 feet or so from the extended stage where the boys would come out to for some of the songs! You’ll see a little later on in the pictures, but I got to see them very up-close and I legit wanted to cry at one point LOL.

img_20181208_165727

Standing pits are usually always chaotic, but I had such a pleasant time in this one! Surprisingly, our section was less full than some of the other sections, so we had plenty of space to turn around and move as we needed. The only time it ever got a bit crowded was when the boys came near us, but everyone was fairly polite and the crowd was really pumped up! It seems like the boys had a good time too, and seeing them perform live is always such a treat – even more so this time because they were so close at some points ㅠㅠ They had even prepared some short Chinese phrases to interact with the audience, which was fascinating to me because I could understand what they were saying in English, Chinese, and Korean haha. Before I knew it though, two and a half hours had flown by and the concert was ending… and I was just left with a whole lot of unforgettable memories, some new friendships, and a very warm feeling in my heart.

img_20181208_204922

two moments that always touch my heart at concerts: when confetti starts to fall and the final encore bow… just how special it was to have been there at that moment in that time, it blows me away ♡

After the concert, I said goodbye to my new friends and headed back to the city via rail. Despite the station being crowded with thousands of people trying to get home, the city traffic control staff handled the situation very well by managing the flow of people and joking with the crowd to keep everyone laughing in good spirits. I got back within a short amount of time and headed straight to the night market to get my fill of foods that I’ve missed having. Maybe I ate a little too much, but both my stomach and my heart were content for the night, and I went to bed early to wake up for my return flight at 8AM the next morning.

img_20181208_215823

the view along a river while walking to the night market – isn’t it beautiful?

mvimg_20181208_220514

Although this trip to Taiwan passed by in a flash, I think it was among one of the best memories I’ve made for myself this past year. It was a whirlwind from the moment I landed until the moment I left, and I was exhausted going to work the next day… but it was 100% worth it to have gone. In the past, I talked a little bit here about how surreal it felt when I first came to be living out one of my dreams; honestly, I still get that feeling sometimes, especially in moments like this. How fortunate and blessed am I to be able to have done all the things I’ve done so far? I never want to take any moment of this for granted, but instead to fully love the life I live in the present moment.

I already know that I’ll look back upon this period of time as some of the most beautiful memories of my youth, and especially, I feel like there’s no other group quite like BTS to remind me constantly of that. I think I’m drawn to them in particular because I really connect to the growth they’ve shown over time – after all, their music also accompanied me through my own transition from youth into adulthood.

Seemingly, we’ve simultaneously worked towards our dreams and to understand our place in the world we live in. It’s immensely powerful and comforting to me that although they are distant celebrities, they’re also searching for the same answers to life as I am – and of those in particular, finding our “self” and our “love”. In holding on to those two small words they keep saying to me, I think that life has already had so much meaning added to it. For that, I’m grateful and proud that I can call them my stars, and I’m happy to continue walking on this journey together with them. 보라해 ♡
