The buses used for field trips are the same buses used to bring students  to and from school for their regular academic program. As a result, trips will not be scheduled on dates when NYC public schools are closed (generally all federal holidays) or when the public schools have half-day sessions. https://www.schools.nyc.gov/calendar

  • Trips requiring more than five (5) vehicles may not be scheduled on Fridays due to limited vehicle availability.
  • Schools are responsible for fees associated with tolls and parking.
  • Tolls must be paid by check - made payable to the bus vendor and given to driver before the scheduled trip.
  • Canceled check will serve as the receipt of payment.
  • Schools must confirm all assigned trips with the bus company dispatcher two days before the scheduled trip.
  • Neither OPT nor the bus companies can be responsible for routing field trips. To ensure proper travel, schools must provide bus drivers with directions to and from the field trip site.

260+ Field Trip Ideas for Grades Pre-K Through 12 (In-Person and Virtual)

Get out of the classroom and explore the world!

Students on field trips to the local theater and a fire station.

Field trips are a quintessential school experience. You usually only get one or two a year so it’s important to do it right! Our roundups of unique field trip ideas have something for every age, subject, and interest. We’ve even got resources like permission slip forms and chaperone tips. Get ready to leave the classroom behind to take learning on the road!

Preschool Field Trip Ideas

Early-grade field trips help kids learn about the world and also teach them good field trip behavior. These are our top picks for the pre-K crowd, but many of the options on our kindergarten list are perfect for this age group too.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

Middle and High School Field Trip Ideas

Middle school students on a field trip to a water reclamation facility

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.

Drumthwacket is host to visiting school children from around the state. As the official residence of New Jersey’s Governor and a renowned New Jersey historic site, the goals of the Discover Drumthwacket field trip program are to promote an understanding of New Jersey history, pride in the heritage of our state and an awareness of leadership and good citizenship.

The program is geared towards 4th grade curriculum when NJ history is taught. But, Drumthwacket welcomes all students to learn and enjoy historic Drumthwacket and New Jersey’s rich history.  Admission is always free.

The objectives for the Discover Drumthwacket education program are:

  • 1835 to 1981: pre-governor’s residence years
  • 1981 to present: the official governor’s residence of New Jersey
  • To develop an appreciation of New Jersey fine art and architecture
  • To examine the changes in culture and lifestyle over Drumthwacket’s three eras of private ownership
  • To understand the private and official uses of Drumthwacket today
  • To understand what it means to be governor of New Jersey

In addition to the historic residence the visit includes a tour of the Thomas Olden House, the 1759 farmhouse on the property where Governor Olden was born.  Students learn about 18th century colonial kitchens, their furnishings and gardens through hands-on displays. Weather permitting, students will have the opportunity to tour Drumthwacket’s beautiful gardens and play with Colonial period toys.

Planning Your Visit

Discover Drumthwacket field trips are offered most Wednesdays. The visit takes approximately 1.5 hours and includes:

Should you need to cancel your visit, notify the Foundation immediately at info@drumthwacket.org .

Please call Robyn Brenner, Executive Director, (973) 204-2860 , or e-mail info@drumthwacket.org .

“Eureka! Invention and Innovation in New Jersey”

Inspired by Abram Spanel, the last private owner of Drumthwacket who held more than 2000 patents at the time of his death in 1985, this free, on-line learning module was developed by the Drumthwacket Foundation in partnership with New Jersey teachers.  The module educates students on the importance of invention and innovation in the history of our state and nation. Designed for use by fourth grade teachers and comprised of five lessons which may be taught individually or consecutively, the module:

  • aligns to English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math and Technology standards
  • introduces students to inventors who are less known but whose inventions are well known such as bubble wrap, the electric guitar, hole punch and bandaids
  • engages students with lesson plans designed to encourage connections, enhance learning and foster curiosity
  • includes a ‘teacher toolbox’ which houses all assessments, worksheets, ready-to-use power point slides, hyperlinks to text resources and more

The companion Eureka! Student Site reinforces learning with educational games, puzzles and an interactive New Jersey map highlighting cities associated with each inventor or invention featured within the classroom module.

They all have better things to do. But, “a hen’s gotta do what a hen’s gotta do,” and so our crimson heroine perseveres until her work is done. Produced by Virgina Repertory Theatre.

It means you’ll be unable to see the entire stage from those seats.

We sell these seats because for many fans the limited view is not a problem, and the tickets are clearly labeled at time of purchase (see photo below). Limited view seating varies event to event and could be something as small as a tiny corner of the stage being blocked from view. Call our box office at 615-782-4040 for additional information on limited view seating.

Many shows impose ticket limits to allow as many people as possible to have equal access to seats. This is done as a deterrent to third party vendors, i.e. scalpers, who may purchase large blocks of seats and then resell them online at an inflated cost. The term “household” refers to any shared information on one or more accounts. This includes, but may not be limited to matching names, mailing and billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers. I’m going to be assigning my 11th grade honors US History class “In the Heart of the Sea” as their second marking period reading assignment. Being mainly 1st and 2nd generation immigrants, I thought a trip to Mystic Seaport at the end of the first marking period would greatly enhance their reading comprehension as they delve into the book. That said, how to pay for such a great experience?

Thank you in advance for your consideration and assistance. I will be excitedly awaiting your reply!!

South Korea's medical professors join protests, reduce hours in practice

Medical professors in South Korea said they will cut back on the hours they spend in practice starting on Monday to support trainee doctors on strike for more than a month over a government plan to boost medical school admissions.

Texas school bus with over 40 pre-K students struck by cement truck, killing 2, authorities say

BASTROP, Texas (AP) — A cement truck veered into a school bus carrying more than 40 pre-K students returning from a field trip to a Texas zoo Friday, killing a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle, authorities said.

Officials said the bus rolled over on the highway in the rural outskirts of Austin, where a heavy presence of emergency vehicles shut down traffic for hours. The roof of the bus was crumpled, and much of another vehicle nearby was pulverized. Personal items were strewn across the road.

Four people in critical condition were airlifted from the crash site. Six others with potentially serious injuries were transported by ambulance, said Kevin Parker, division chief Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

An ambulance bus transported about 10 other patients to a children’s hospital with minor injuries, Parker said. Passengers on the bus included 44 students and 11 adults, according to the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

The child who died “was a precious young boy” who was a pre-K student at Tom Green Elementary School in Buda, according to Eric Wright, school district superintendent. The child’s name was not released.

Wright said in addition to the two people who died, 51 others were injured, including the bus driver.

“This is a horrible and tragic day for our school district,” Wright said.

The bus was struck at about 2 p.m. when the concrete truck, which was traveling in the opposite direction, veered into the bus’ lane, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Deon Cockrell said. He added that authorities told him initial information indicated the truck hit the bus head-on, causing it to roll over.

The man who was killed was in a vehicle that either ran into the back of the bus or maybe part of the concrete truck, Cockrell said. There was one person in the truck and one man in the other vehicle. Cockrell didn’t know how fast the vehicles were going. He said the truck driver was cooperating with authorities.

Parents of the students on the bus were notified of the crash and all the children were reunited with their families by the evening, Wright said.

Cynthia Yescas said her 4-year-old nephew had been on the bus and that he was OK, but a little hurt,  the Austin American-Statesman reported .

“The kids are more scared than anything else,” she said.

The bus didn’t have seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesperson, told the newspaper. New buses have been fitted with belts since 2017, he said.

Gov. Greg Abbott said in a post on the social media platform X that he spoke with the district superintendent “and offered the state’s full support as they help their community through this tragedy.”

State Rep. Erin Zwiener, whose district includes Buda, said in a post on Facebook that her heart goes out to the families affected.

“In this terrible moment, our community must come together to support those who’ve lost loved ones and those who are recovering,” she wrote, also thanking first responders and school district employees who she said “saved lives today.”

Buda is about 16 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Austin.
