Bourbon Boat Tour in Frankfort with Tasting provided by Kentucky River Tours

The Beloved Bourbon Boat Written by Patti Nickell

ky bourbon boat tour

What do you get when you mix a dollop of river adventure, a dash of history, a touch of commonwealth trivia, and a taste of bourbon?

You get a floating addition to the Bourbon Trail, and what is believed to be the country’s only bourbon boat tour.  A recent excursion on the Trace of Kentucky, a U.S. Coast Guard-inspected vessel, delivered all the above.

Helmed by Captain Allison, with Captain Nathan as the informative narrator, guests (myself included) got the full experience of the one-hour-and-twenty-five-minute “Tour and Taste” excursion.

Taking off from Frankfort’s dock for a journey into the pool of the Kentucky River (no dams and locks to traverse on this one), we were accompanied for several miles by a majestic blue heron, dipping and soaring above the water.

After a heavy rainfall, the river, which provides one-sixth of the state with water, took on a mossy green hue instead of its usual brownish-gray. The blue heron made a striking contrast, but it was only one example of fauna seen along the route.

Green herons, osprey and turtles are other examples of wildlife that can be spotted along this route, and Nathan pointed out that freshwater eels have been found near the Frankfort Boat Club. The most exciting time to spot the native fauna is in April and May when bald eagles nest in the trees alongside pools two and three.

The heron finally disappeared, replaced by a line of houseboats moored along the bank serving as a reminder that Kentucky is one of America’s Top 10 houseboating destinations.

(Although our boat was confined to a pool of the river, with the opening of locks and dams one through four, the river is navigable for 82 miles from Frankfort to its mouth on the Ohio River.)

Among the sights easily seen from the boat is the 129-year-old Singing Bridge, a beloved Frankfort landmark. The bridge spans the Kentucky River at 405 feet long and features a metal grate girder, which makes a humming noise when cars drive across.

The tour features one site passengers can see – the impressive limestone cliffs that line the river and date back some 450 million years – and one they can’t – FishTrap Island.  Once used by Native Americans, it is now completely submerged beneath the river waters, but you can use your imagination.

Another site that requires imagination was once occupied by the old Frankfort Hotel where two remarkable women Ruth Booe, in partnership with Rebecca Gooch, came up with the concept of the bourbon ball.

This delectable bourbon-laced chocolate bonbon gained the ladies a lasting spot in commonwealth history.

Nathan explained that in the early 20 th century, Ruth applied for a $50 loan at three local banks to expand her business.  All three turned her down.  Thankfully, an employee at the hotel had better business sense than the bankers and loaned her the money.  The rest, as they say, is history.

This was a good time for Nathan to segue to the history of bourbon and its historic connection to the Kentucky River.

As the boat passed the remains of the once imposing Hermitage Distillery built in 1868 and given its name presumably in a nod to Andrew Jackson’s Nashville estate, The Hermitage.

Passengers from out of state are often surprised to learn that 95 percent of the world’s bourbon comes from Kentucky’s nearly 100 distilleries, and that bourbon barrels for aging the spirit outnumber people five to one.

Nathan got a laugh when he explained that a few select distilleries were allowed to remain open during Prohibition as their product was used for medicinal purposes for ailments ranging from “old age” to a “broken heart.”

One of these distilleries is the last stop on the Bourbon Boat Tour.  Buffalo Trace, the oldest continuously operating distillery in America (1857) and the first to market single barrel bourbon commercially, is a National Historic Landmark.

Boat passengers disembark here for a bourbon tasting in the renovated Visitors’ Center.  They sample six of the distillery’s signature products, while learning about the giants of the industry – from Colonel E. H. Taylor and Albert Blanton to Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr.

The latter, Nathan told us, was known for saying “we make bourbon for a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon.”

With a shot glass of Pappy’s 23-year-old priced at up to $100 and a collector’s bottle selling for $5,000, it’s safe to say that they have never had to worry about selling it at a loss.

If you are looking for a new perspective on Kentucky’s most famous industry and the way it was influenced by the Kentucky River, the Bourbon Boat Tour (offered May through October) is ideal.

This town is truly passionate about America’s Native Spirit, but it’s also America’s second-oldest city, so history buffs will feel right at home.

Start your experience in Bardstown at another historic distillery rich in family history. Tour the grounds at Willett Distillery and make reservations at The Bar at Willett for an unforgettable cocktail and dining experience (I bet you didn’t know you liked egg salad until you try this !).

Less than 2 miles from the center of enchanting Bardstown on an old tobacco farm you’ll find Preservation Distillery + Farm , a small operating farm and distillery making 100% pot distilled Bourbon and whiskey in 1-3 barrel batches. Longhorn cattle roam the property, and with itty bitty releases of their Olde St Nick, Wattie Boone, Cowboy Little Barrel and Preservation you’re sure to have a worthwhile visit.

Head out to the county for this stunner of a destination, Log Still Distillery . Founded by three members of the Joseph Washington Dant family, these are distillery grounds like you’ve never seen before. Complete with an amphitheatre that draws artists like the Gin Blossoms and Little Big Town, The Legacy a gorgeous wedding and events venue inspired by rickhouses, a full-service farm to table restaurant, working train depot and beautiful onsite lodging, you’ll never want to leave.

(When planning your trip, keep in mind that Bardstown is more rural than Louisville and Lexington, and on-demand ride services may not be available. Click here to see your transportation options in and around Bardstown…planning ahead is key!)

Lebanon is literally the “heart” of Kentucky — it’s the geographic center of the Bluegrass State. There’s a lot of history in this small town with the Civil War Trail and the John Hunt Morgan Trail. Grab a snack downtown and then stop by the beautiful Limestone Branch Distillery , a founding member of the KBT Craft Tour®. 7th generation Beams – Steve & Paul – will let you sample some of their award-winning products including the Yellowstone Bourbon and Minor Case Rye.

You’ve seen how the whiskey is made. You’ve learned how to mix it in a cocktail. But have you ever seen the skilled craftsmen bending the staves to make the barrels, hammering on the rings, and charring the insides with a big burst of flame? Now you can! Book a Kentucky Cooperage Tour at the Independent Stave Company and leave smelling like our favorite perfume – charred oak (close-toed shoes required).

Don’t miss an opportunity to dine on classic Kentucky fare in the Old Talbott Tavern (try the fried green tomatoes), have a nightcap in the “world’s oldest Bourbon bar”, and even spend the night if you feel so inclined. And take a stroll through the past in the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History . Need another unique and storied lodging option? Immerse yourself in Bourbon and American history when you stay at The Samuels House . This 250 year old home to eight generations of the family behind the iconic Maker’s Mark brand is packed with their personal collection of amazing whiskey memorabilia and is just waiting for you.

Next you’re going to head west to get some more stamps in your passport. Just outside of Bardstown in Radcliff, stop into Boundary Oak Distillery and try their small batch offerings such as their Lincoln Straight Bourbon, Patton Armored Diesel, and Kentucky Amber.

Let us take you back to Muhlenberg County to see The Bard Distillery ! Kim and Thomas Bard – 4th great grandson of William Bard for whom “Bardstown” got its name – have breathed life into the property that was once home to Thomas’s own elementary school. You’ve got to see what they’ve done with the place.

Boat tour offering new look at Kentucky’s bourbon industry

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky’s popular Bourbon Trail is blazing a new path. This one, by water.

Tourists can take a new bourbon tour by boat and learn how the Kentucky River played a vital role in turning brown liquor into green dollars.

Buffalo Trace Distillery, home to one of the world’s most popular bourbons, allows visitors to get a sneak peek and taste of a famous Kentucky export. But where would bourbon be without the Kentucky River? The waters were key in the making and transportation of the state’s brown liquor.

A boat named the Trace of Kentucky, is exploring that, captained by husband-and-wife team Nathan and Allison Depenbrock.

“We’re the only bourbon tour in the nation that focuses on the waters that made bourbon,” Nathan said.

Also known as the Bourbon Boat, this two-hour waterway tour teaches visitors how distillers in the early 1800s used wooden flat bottom boats, navigating what could be rough waters just to sell their product down south.

“Transportation was the big thing and all those distilleries had to develop, really in this area, because of these central arteries known as rivers. These are how we transported all these goods around,” Nathan said.

The wooden barrels on those flat bottom boats would travel from central Kentucky to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers until it reached its destination—Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

“Those barrels down these rivers, the rivers that built bourbon, you’re talking nine, 12, 18 months, maybe even longer to get to New Orleans,” Nathan said.

Nathan said months of bourbon sloshing around during the travel changed its color from clear to brown, transforming its taste to a bourbon craze.

“Bourbon history is super cloudy and confusing and kind of mixed up,” Nathan said.

On the tour you’ll see distilleries that used to line the riverbanks.

“In 1920 we lost the Hermitage Distillery. We also lost Springhill to your left. You might see all the fermentation room walls hanging up there in the woods,” Nathan said.

Some lost to prohibition, while others lost to Mother Nature.

“About two miles upstream from where we just turned around is where the Old Crow Distillery, owned by Jim Beam, was sitting when it was struck by lightning,” Nathan said.

Currently about a dozen distillers are on or near the banks. Some are mixing with the hospitality industry.

“That’s a three-bedroom, two bath AirBnB owned by Castle and Key Distillery. That building has its own private tasting bar in the house there,” Nathan said.

The Kentucky River gave bourbon its claim to fame. But without it…

“I don’t know if we would have bourbon as far as the spirit we know of today,” Nathan said.

Nathan said there are three and a half times as many bourbon barrels in the commonwealth as there are people.
