How To Travel By Tram

If you want to travel through Rotterdam by public transport then the tram might be the first thing that comes to mind. This is almost no coincidence because the tram has been a reliable means of transport in this modern city since 1879. With 9 tram connections and 2 extra season bound tram lines, you can get almost anywhere by tram.

We start with an overview of exactly how these nine tram lines run and where you can get on as a passenger. Tram 2 covers the route between Lombardijen and Charlois, including the stations Randweg, Hillevliet and Maashaven. This connection transports travellers within Rotterdam South.

Between the Molenlaan and Spangen, you are dependent on tram line 4. North Station, Rotterdam Central Station, Eendrachtsplein, Delfshaven and Marconiplein are some of the stops where you can get on and off. Tram 7 transports travellers between Woudestein and Willemsplein, via the stops Erasmus University, Voorschoterlaan, Weena, Rotterdam Central and Eendrachtsplein. Between Molenlaan and Spangen, tram 8 will take you to your destination. Station Noord, Rotterdamcentraal, Beurs, Leuvenhaven, Erasmus MC and the Euromast, Delfshaven and Marconiplein are some of the stops of this ride. This is also the tram to reach the Sparta stadium. Tram 20 provides the connection between Lombardijen in Rotterdam South and Rotterdam Central via the Erasmus Bridge. Where metro line D ‘dives’ under the Maas, tram 20 runs via the ‘Zwaan’ over the famous river. The Wilhelminaplein and the Eendrachtsplein are some of the stops of this ride.

For the journey between the stations De Esch and Schiedam Woudhoek tram 21 is the preferred connection. The stations that are visited are the Erasmus University, Oostplein, Blaak Station, Beurs, Rotterdam Central Station, Marconiplein, Schiedam Centre Station and Nieuwland Station.

Another tram connection that connects both parts of Rotterdam is tram 23 that maintains the route between Beverwaard station and Marconiplein. Here you can get off at the stops of the famous Feijenoord Stadium, Wilhelminaplein, Leuvenhaven, Beurs and Rotterdam Central Station.

The eighth tram line is the route between De Esch and Vlaardingen Holy for which you board tram 24. With tram 25 we have the ninth connection of this city, allowing travellers to travel between Carnisselande and Schiebroek. This route transports passengers to the Maasstad Hospital and the Sint Franciscus Gasthuis.

Every journey by tram starts with a valid transport ticket.  Most travellers choose the OV Chipkaart. An upgradeable OV Chipkaart costs € 7.50, this is an electronic payment card that allows travel by public transport in the Netherlands. Children under the age of 4 travel for free. There are attractive discounts for over-65s and groups.

Children and over-65s travel at a discount. You can deduct this discount if you travel with a personal OV-chipkaart on balance. The discount applies to the basic fare and the boarding fare.

If you do not plan to travel a lot, a disposable OV-chipkaart is a solution. With such a ticket you can travel by public transport for two hours. This RET 2-hour card provides access to all RET public transport. The ticket is valid in bus, tram and metro within Rotterdam for a period of 2 hours after check-in. The costs are Euro 4.50.  You can choose between a Personal and an Anonymous or a Disposable OV-chipkaart. The one-time chip card is more for occasional travel. Keep in mind the limited validity for bus, tram or metro. The other type of OV-Chipkaart, the Personal, is only available for residents of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The card contains the holder’s name, photo and date of birth. The OV chip cards can be purchased from RET, Connexxion and Arriva. More information about the OV-chipkaart can be found on the website 9292.nl and on RET.nl.

Tourist Day Tickets

If you buy a tourist day ticket for €14,50, you can travel all day by tram, metro, bus and waterbus. This ticket is valid in the metropolitan area Rotterdam The Hague.

Balance checker

With balance checker, you can check the balance on your OV Chip card online. This is done by entering the OV chip number.

By opting for automatic recharging of your personal OV chip card you avoid situations where you are without balance, especially useful when you are in a hurry. The big advantage is that you don’t have to worry about keeping your balance on your OV-chip.

Automatically top up your balance

Automatic recharging also has the advantage that there is always enough balance to travel and as soon as the balance on your personal OV-chipkaart drops below € 0.00, a fixed amount can automatically be transferred from your bank account to your OV-chipkaart. You can choose from amounts of € 10,00, € 20,00 or € 50,00 for upgrading. The website 9292.nl is very useful, here you can directly transfer the balance from your bank account.

Apart from the advantages mentioned above, you don’t have to wait at a charging machine. This saves time and inconvenience. Via a few simple steps to load the card automatically. This starts by checking in or out. The card is automatically charged at check-in or check-out. This happens if you don’t have enough balance to pay the boarding fee or the fare. Your card will be charged immediately with your chosen amount of € 10, € 20 or € 50. Checking in is normally possible even if there is little or no balance on the OV chip card.

By holding the OV chip card at a pole or gate the balance of your card will be charged. This amount is an advance payment that you owe afterwards. The system will help you on your way, but you will have to pay it back.

Check-in and check-out mandatory

It is a fairly simple rule to also make sure you check out after check-in.- A journey starts by checking in by holding the card against the card reader when you get on the tram. This action is again necessary at the end of the journey and when changing trains. The card reader calculates what a journey has cost and what discounts are associated with it. The costs are debited from the balance on the OV-chipkaart.

Travellers are obliged to check out. Especially because at check-in it is not yet clear what the destination of the trip is. Anyone who does not check-in (properly) runs the risk of a fine of at least € 54.00 when checking in.

Save OV-Miles for discounts

Members of OV-Miles only save when checking in and out of their trip. OVMiles is an initiative of RET in which, together with 34 partners in the Rotterdam region, travellers are offered the opportunity to save free of charge for interesting discounts with their OV chip card. OVMiles rewards travellers for the kilometres they make with public transport. The registration procedure is done online with the OV chip card and from that moment on the Miles are saved by those who travel by public transport within the transport area of RET.

Handy OV Chipkaart rules

A public transport chip card is intended for one person only. Multiple travellers all need a separate card. When using a single OV-chipkaart there is a surcharge of € 1.

As long as you have sufficient credit, the OV-chipkaart can be used for all forms of public transport in the Netherlands. A minimum of € 4 credit is required for other forms of transport.

If you travel by tram, a personal OV-chipkaart can be purchased if you are a resident of the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany. The personal card contains the name, photo and date of birth of the cardholder.

Boarding and basic fare

You avoid paying the full boarding fee by checking out. For passengers travelling on balance, a boarding fare will be debited from the balance at check-in. At check-out, however, the boarding fare will be refunded and the kilometres travelled will be charged. If there is no check-out, the passenger will, therefore, pay the full boarding fare.

Boarding fare

You can only travel if you have sufficient balance on your card. In case of a negative balance on your card, you cannot travel. The balance can be purchased online.

The fares for the tram are for an anonymous, personal card with discount hours € 4

Travel with barcode

The RET Barcode App offers a solution for those who do not have an OV-chipkaart. This RET invention makes it easy to buy a mobile ticket for the tram via your phone. A vending machine is available. With the barcode, you can check-in and out of the tram. In case of a check-up, it is sufficient to show the ticket on your mobile to the driver or conductor. The current rate for the RET barcode is € 8.50 per day.

Convenient RET real-time app

Travellers by tram can travel more efficiently via a new travel app. With this app, a route can be mapped out in detail. Travel time, where to change trains and which platform your train, tram or metro will arrive at is displayed on your mobile phone.

This free RET app makes travelling by tram even more attractive. The app also shows departure times for all bus, tram and metro lines throughout the Netherlands. With a My RET account, you can immediately see in the app and on the RET website what time the next vehicle departs from your desired stop. Searching by line, stop or nearest stop is done on the basis of GPS location. With the app you can see all RET vehicles in your area in real-time, so you can also see the arrival of the tram and know if you need to sprint to the stop. The real-time app is also a kind of travel assistant because of the overview it offers transfer possibilities. With this app, you are one step ahead of the diversity of the Dutch weather by seeing whether you can expect sun or rain. Surprises about diversions are avoided because the app informs you about them in good time.

Rotterdam Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 9, 2023

An aerial view of Rotterdam, Netherlands

Often overshadowed by Amsterdam , Rotterdam is a funky little port town that prides itself on its unique architecture, cool art, amazing food, and massive harbor. The city is one of the most multicultural in the country and hosts an array of festivals and concerts throughout the year.

I really enjoy Rotterdam. It is a laid-back contrast to the wild, canal-lined streets of Amsterdam. Plus, the parks here are plentiful and the city comes to life in the summer with festivals, concerts, and other free events. (But, even while busy, it’s a far cry from the packed streets of Amsterdam.) Over the last few years, Rotterdam has really developed into a bustling up with a growing art and vibrant new restaurant scene.

This Rotterdam travel guide can help you plan your trip to this often overlooked destination.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Rotterdam

The iconic Cube Houses near the Erasmus Bridge in sunny Rotterdam, Netherlands

1. See the Erasmus Bridge

This bridge (nicknamed “The Swan”) resembles a harp and towers over Europe’s largest harbor. Connecting the north and south of Rotterdam over the Nieuwe Maas river, this is a cable-stayed bridge as well as a bascule bridge (aka a drawbridge; the bascule part can be raised to allow large ships to pass under it). From the bridge, you can spot the iconic Cube Houses (more on them below) as well as the Art Nouveau-style Witte Huis. Walk a little further and you can explore the charming Delfshaven neighborhood.

2. Walk the harbor

Rotterdam has the largest and busiest harbor in all of Europe and it stretches out over 40 kilometers (25 miles). Head to Futureland (free admission) to learn more about Maasvlakte 2, the most recent part of the port that opened in 2013. If you’re short on time, just wander around and watch all the boats coming and going or take a stroll through the piers and check out luxurious yachts owned by the world’s elite. I enjoyed eating lunch at the cafes and watching the world go by wondering “where is that ship going?”

3. Go up the Euromast tower

This tower has a rotating elevator that takes you 185 meters (606 feet) in the air. There’s also a restaurant at the top (but it’s a bit expensive). Thanks to the flat landscape of the country, the picturesque views stretch on for miles. If you like adventure, you can actually abseil down from the top! Admission to the viewing platforms is 11.50 EUR but if you want to go all the way to the top, it’s 15.50 EUR. Abseiling (May to September only) is 62.50 EUR.

4. Visit the Cube Houses

Rotterdam is known for its modern, cutting-edge architecture. A great example of this is the quirky Cube Houses, a row of 38 bright yellow, small, cube-shaped houses. The cubes are elevated and supported on hexagonal pylons, freeing space on the ground. Also known as Blaak Forest, they were designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom and built in the 1980s. Most of the houses are private residences but one is open to the public for 3 EUR.

5. Relax in the park

Located right by the river near the Euromast, Het Park is a gigantic park perfect for strolls, picnics, and sports. (Don’t tell the people in Amsterdam, but I enjoyed it more than Amsterdam’s famed Vondelpark.) I highly recommend spending some time here. It was designed in the 1850s to look and feel like a traditional English garden. There are park houses, a mini-golf course (7.50 EUR per round), benches, and a BBQ area. Pack a lunch, bring a book, and lounge the day away.

Other Things to See and Do in Rotterdam

1. attend the rotterdam summer carnival.

Rotterdam has a thriving community of local artists. Their contributions are best reflected in the many festivals that take place in the port city, especially in the summer. The annual Rotterdam Summer Carnival, held the last weekend of July, includes a full lineup of dancing, parties, and colorful parades. It’s the largest street party in the Netherlands with over 2,500 dancers, 25 carnival groups, and 30 floats on display. If possible, try to see the Battle of the Drums at the beginning of the carnival — the streets become filled with Caribbean brass bands all competing for the “Golden Drum” award.

2. Visit the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

This museum, founded in 1849, houses a rich collection of masterpieces such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The “Little” Tower of Babel (1563). In addition to a large permanent collection of works by Dutch masters, there’s a broad collection of surrealism, featuring Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. While under renovation (expected to be completed in 2029), many items are accessible at other Rotterdam museums.

3. See City Hall

Built in 1914, the Rotterdam City Hall is one of the few buildings that survived the destruction of World War II (the Netherlands was officially neutral, however, the Nazis carpet-bombed Rotterdam and invaded the country anyway). There are several large statues outside the building, including the touching Memorial to the Fallen featuring four bronze figures meant to commemorate the victims of the war (900 people were killed and 85,000 were left homeless after just one day of bombing). Most of the notable architecture and monuments are on the exterior, but if you’d like a tour inside, you can book one from the local tourist office.

4. Peek in the Oude Kerk

This is another one of the few buildings that survived the World War II destruction. The Old Church, also called the Pilgrim Fathers Church, is one of the major sights in the Delfshaven neighborhood. Although the neighborhood is surrounded by the Red Light District, it’s nevertheless quite peaceful and quiet. The church dates to 1306 and is home to several artifacts, including a huge organ and the tombs of several noteworthy individuals, including Rembrandt’s wife. The church is said to be the site where the Pilgrims last prayed prior to leaving for the Americas. It’s 12 EUR to visit.

5. Do a harbor tour

If you enjoyed wandering the harbor and want to learn more about it, do a harbor tour. The harbor in Rotterdam is one of the largest and busiest in the entire world. Dutch history is inherently intertwined with the sea, so hopping on a boat tour is a great way to view some of the action. You’ll get to soak in the view of the city’s skyline while also viewing the shipyards, docks, and many giant shipping containers. Tours cost 15.75 EUR and last 75 minutes.

6. Visit the Kunsthal Rotterdam

For fans of contemporary art, the Kunsthal Rotterdam museum hosts temporary art exhibitions. While there is no permanent collection at the gallery, the space regularly attracts well-known artists. There is also a nice restaurant and a small garden and grounds to explore. Admission is 16.50 EUR and the museum is open daily when exhibitions are on. Check the website to see what’s on during your visit.

7. Grab a bite to eat at the Markthal

The Markthal is a large indoor market hall. Its impressive exterior is shaped like a horseshoe while the interior boasts over 100 different food stalls and restaurants. There’s also a supermarket and even a free historical exhibition space showcasing archaeological finds discovered during its construction. There’s a large mural of food, flowers, and insects covering the vaulted interior too. It’s a great place to snack and people-watch.

8. Explore the Het Nieuwe Instituut

The Museum for Architecture, Design, and Digital Culture offers a unique take on modern society. With exhibitions focusing on the three themes of design, architecture, and culture, it’s an insightful place to learn more about Rotterdam’s contemporary architecture. The Sonneveld House nearby, built in the modernist Dutch Functionalist style, is part of the museum’s collection and can be visited with the same admission ticket of 14 EUR (free on Thursday evenings).

9. Wander the Rotterdam Zoo

Rotterdam Zoo is one of the Netherlands’ oldest zoos and is considered one of the best zoos in Europe (it opened in 1857). Spanning over 60 acres, visitors can take a tour “around the world” through the various animal exhibitions and see giraffes, polar bears, elephants, and more. There’s also a relaxing botanical garden and an aquarium here as well. Admission is 23.50 EUR.

10. See Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

This medieval Protestant church is the only remaining late Gothic building in Rotterdam, which was originally a medieval city. During World War II, the church was bombed, leaving only the walls intact. It was one of the few buildings in the city to be restored rather than replaced. There’s a tower that you can climb in spring/summer and three huge organs — including the largest organ in the Netherlands. Admission is 3 EUR and it costs another 7.50 EUR to climb the tower.

11. Tour the Maritime Museum

This museum is the oldest and largest museum in the Netherlands. It’s an immersive experience that covers six centuries of maritime history via its functional historic vessels and cranes. Some of the interactive exhibits include a trip offshore as well as learning about the drug trade (much of the world’s drugs are trafficked by ship). Tickets cost 16 EUR.

12. Explore the SS Rotterdam

The former flagship of the Holland America Line is now not only an attraction offering tours but you can actually sleep on board as well. Between 1959 and 1971, the ship ran transatlantic journeys between Europe and America. After flights put transatlantic boat trips out of business, it transitioned into a five-star cruise liner. It is now moored at the quayside in Rotterdam. There are three tours that you can take (two are guided while one is an audio tour). They last 1-2.5 hours and cost 12.95-16.50 EUR. Staying overnight costs from 80 EUR depending on the time of year.

Rotterdam Travel Costs

The interior of the popular Foodhallen eatery in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Hostel prices – Hostels start at 27 EUR per night for 12-14-bed dorms and 35 EUR for 4-6-bed dorms. A basic private room with a shared bathroom starts at 65 EUR. Prices don’t change much between peak and off-peak seasons but some hostels close in the off-season.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is available outside the city. A basic plot for one person without electricity costs around 12.50 EUR.

Budget hotel prices – Centrally located two-star hotels begin at 70 EUR per night for a double with a private bathroom and free Wi-Fi. Off-season, prices start at 55 EUR per night for the same type of room. For somewhere really unique, check out Culture Campsite. It features tiny houses using upcycled materials, including calf igloos, beach huts, and old trucks. Prices start at 65 EUR in low season and 75 EUR in high season.

Rotterdam has lots of Airbnb options, although it has become more tightly regulated in recent years. A private room can be as low as 45 EUR per night with a shared bathroom, even in peak season, but they average closer to 70-90 EUR. An entire apartment averages about 140 EUR per night, with off-season prices costing around 100 EUR per night.

Food – Dutch cuisine typically involves lots of vegetables, bread, and cheeses (gouda originated here). Meat, while historically not as prominent, is a staple of dinner meals. Breakfast and lunch usually involve open-faced sandwiches, often with cheeses and cold cuts. Dinners are very much a “meat and potatoes” meal, with meat stews and smoked sausage being two popular choices. For those with a sweet tooth, the stroopwafel (a waffle cookie with a syrup filling) is the go-to choice, though apple tarts/pies are also local favorites.

If you’re on a budget, falafel and shawarma shops are your best bet for cheap food. Meals here cost around 5-10 EUR. Cheap fast food (think fries and burgers) cost around 9 EUR.

Restaurant meals average around 15 EUR for a main dish of more traditional Dutch cuisine. In a mid-range restaurant, a three-course menu with a drink costs at least 30-40 EUR.

Pizza costs around 10-15 EUR while Chinese food is also around 10-15 EUR for a main dish. Beer is 4 EUR while a latte/cappuccino is 3 EUR. Bottled water is 2.40 EUR.

If you cook your meals, expect to pay 60-70 EUR per week for groceries that include pasta, rice, vegetables, and some meat.

Backpacking Rotterdam Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Rotterdam, expect to spend about 65 EUR per day. This budget covers staying in a hostel dorm, limiting your drinking, taking public transit to get around, cooking your meals, and sticking to mostly free activities like walking tours and exploring the market. If you plan on drinking, add 10-20 EUR more per day to your budget.

On a mid-range budget of about 145 EUR per day, you can stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, enjoy a drink or two, eat out a little bit, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like a harbor tour and visiting some museums.

On a “luxury” budget of 280 EUR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, take more taxis and rent a bike to get around, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Rotterdam Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Netherlands is not a cheap destination — and the city of Rotterdam is no exception to that rule. However, there are plenty of ways to save money if you look for them. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Rent a bicycle – The easiest and cheapest way to get around the city (besides walking) is to rent a bike. Donkey Republic is an app that has locations all over the city. You can get a bike with them for around 3.30 EUR per hour or 10-13 EUR per day.
  • Eat cheap – Rotterdam has a lot of cheap snack and falafel shops that cost 5-10 EUR. Additionally, buying food at the market is a great way to stock up on groceries for the week. It’s not glamorous, but it’s cheap.
  • Get the Welcome Card – If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, get this city tourist card. It offers discounts on most attractions (and some are free) as well as three days’ worth of travel on the train and bus system. It’s a bargain if you are going to stay in the city for a while and see a lot. The 24-hour pass is just 13.50 EUR.
  • Stay with a local – Couchsurfing is a service that lets travelers stay with locals for free. You’ll get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice, making this an amazing platform to use to get travel tips. Just be sure to send your requests early as there are not many hosts here.
  • Get the Museumkaart (Museum Card) – Good for one month for non-residents, this card gets you into museums in the Netherlands for only 64.90 EUR. With the Museum Card, you get access to more than 400 museums throughout the Netherlands (the temporary card available to tourists can only be used at a maximum of 5 different museums, however). Depending on your trip, though, it can save you money if you choose your museums wisely.
  • Buy the Rotterdam Pass – The Rotterdam Pass is valid for a year so if you’re planning to spend a long time in Rotterdam, or you’re going to be making multiple visits there, then it definitely makes sense to pick one up. It provides free admission or discounts at around 500 attractions in and around Rotterdam including 20 museums and some food outlets so if you’re planning to eat out and see lots of attractions then it’s worth it. It costs 60 EUR.
  • Take a free walking tour – If you want an overview of the city, take a free walking tour with Free Walking Tour Rotterdam . They offer insightful tours that can help you learn about the city on a budget. Just be sure to tip!
  • Save money on rideshares – Uber is cheaper than taxis here and is the best way to get around a city if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi.
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Rotterdam

Rotterdam doesn’t have many hostel options but there are still a handful of budget-friendly accommodations to choose from. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Rotterdam:

  • Stayokay Rotterdam
  • King Kong Hostel Rotterdam
  • CityHub Rotterdam
  • HostelRoom Rotterdam
  • Sparks Hostel

How to Get Around Rotterdam

A busy transit station on a sunny summer day in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Public transportation – Rotterdam has an extensive public transport system of buses, trams, and a metro run by RET. A single journey up to 2 hours is 4.50 EUR so it’s a lot cheaper to buy a day pass for 9.50 EUR if you’re moving around a lot. If you need a 2- or 3-day pass, it’s cheaper to buy the multi-day Rotterdam Welcome Card.

Note: Cash is not accepted on public transportation. You need to purchase an OV chip card to ride. They come in reloadable and non-reloadable versions.

Bicycle – Like other cities in the Netherlands, cycling is one of the most popular ways to get around. Donkey Republic has stations all over the city with prices starting at 3.30 EUR per hour and 10-13 EUR per day.

Taxi – It’s probably not necessary to take taxis to get around Rotterdam as bikes, walking, and public transport can get you anywhere you need to go. However, if you do need a ride, prices start at 4 EUR and go up 2 EUR per kilometer. Skip them if you can as those prices add up fast!

Ridesharing – Uber is available in Rotterdam but, again, public transportation goes everywhere so skip them if you can.

When to Go to Rotterdam

Rotterdam’s peak season is July-August. This is when the city is liveliest and when you’ll find most of the festivals and events. It’s also when the city is busiest so be sure to book your accommodation early since there are not a ton of hostels here. The average daily summer temperature in Rotterdam is around 22°C (72°F), but it can get a lot hotter than that during July and August.

The weather is mild during the off-season (late spring and early fall) and prices are a little cheaper. If you’re on a tight budget, this is a good time to visit.

The average daily temperature in the winter is 7°C (45°F) so dress warmly if you visit during that time. Generally, I would say avoid visiting in the winter unless you come around Christmas as the city lights up with holiday markets and festivities.

How to Stay Safe in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel. Violent crime is very rare here. Pick-pocketing, while uncommon, can still occur though so keep an eye on your belongings when on crowded public transit.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

There are a few common scams to be aware of here, such as people trying to sell you public transit tickets that actually have already been used. Also, be wary of purchasing a really cheap bike from someone off the street as it has likely been stolen. Overall, scams here are rare but you can read about common travel scams to avoid .

If you experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Rotterdam Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • HostelPass – This new card gives you up to 20% off hostels throughout Europe. It’s a great way to save money. They’re constantly adding new hostels too. I’ve always wanted something like this and glad it finallt exists.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • The Man in Seat 61 – This website is the ultimate guide to train travel anywhere in the world. They have the most comprehensive information on routes, times, prices, and train conditions. If you are planning a long train journey or some epic train trip, consult this site.
  • Rome2Rio – This website allows you to see how to get from point A to point B the best and cheapest way possible. It will give you all the bus, train, plane, or boat routes that can get you there as well as how much they cost.
  • FlixBus – Flixbus has routes between 20 European countries with prices starting as low 5 EUR! Their buses include WiFi, electrical outlets, a free checked bag.
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!
  • BlaBlaCar – BlaBlaCar is a ridesharing website that lets you share rides with vetted local drivers by pitching in for gas. You simply request a seat, they approve, and off you go! It’s a cheaper and more interesting way to travel than by bus or train!

Visiting The Dutch Countryside

Travelblog about The Netherlands | Exploring The Netherlands beyond the crowds

42 Best travel apps for The Netherlands & Amsterdam recommended by a local

So, you’re planning on visiting The Netherlands? Then you want to be prepared for everything with the help of the most useful apps for tourists visiting The Netherlands. Here you will find the best Dutch apps that are useful when you’re travelling to The Netherlands and Amsterdam. From the best public transport app in Amsterdam to great Dutch language apps. You’ll find all the great travel apps for The Netherlands here. Including the best app for tourist attractions, museums and hidden gems in Amsterdam, Noord- Holland.

Discover the best apps for travelling to Amsterdam & The Netherlands

Language apps for the netherlands, google translate.

Google Translate isn’t the most reliable translation app for full sentences. But you can still make yourself clear with the help of this app or discover the meaning of words easily. There even is a camera function that helps you to straightaway translate whole pieces of paper when you point your camera at them. If you want to use it offline, don’t forget to download the language in the app before you go offline. But once you download it, that’s when Google Translate is one of the best offline travel apps to use in The Netherlands.

Ahh, Duolingo. You either love it or hate it. But it’s safe to say that Duolingo has come a long way since years ago and improved their program and learning method rapidly. In fact, it’s actually a useful language learning app nowadays and offers Dutch as a language.

One of the top apps to use before you’re headed to The Netherlands is Babbel. Now, most people in The Netherlands speak English. I happen to be one of them. We start learning English in primary school, but more about the languages we speak in The Netherlands here. If you want to travel beyond the crowds in The Netherlands, it’s very much possible that you’ll encounter people who do not know a lot of English. But most of them are too scared to talk in English. Babbel is a program that costs money, so I will only recommend it to you if you want to learn basic Dutch and more, instead of random words and sentences. However, if you’re interested in learning my mother tongue, then Babbel is one of the most useful language apps for learning Dutch.

Airports and airlines apps for The Netherlands

KLM is one of the best airlines of The Netherlands. They have great aeroplanes; friendly staff and I love their special blue colour. It’s the oldest airline in the world that still operates in the same name. In the KLM app, you can book tickets, discover new locations, explore your Flying Blue miles, grab your boarding pass and plenty of more. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the hub for KLM as well, that means you can easily fly through or to Schiphol from many locations in the world. Making this a great travel app for travelling to The Netherlands.

Schiphol Amsterdam Airport

Most people who travel to The Netherlands fly via Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. So that automatically makes having the Schiphol Airport app, one of the best apps to have when travelling to The Netherlands. From departures to the opening of stores and plenty of more information. For a full guide on Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, have a look here at an article I wrote.

Transavia is the best low-cost airline of The Netherlands and a daughter company of KLM. I prefer to fly Transavia through Europe as I usually have a lower budget than the people who fly KLM. Transavia flies from Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Eindhoven and more airports. It’s the airline I prefer when I’m flying within Europe, way above Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizzair. In their app, you can book tickets, find new and cheap destinations to fly to, get your boarding passes and more.

Rotterdam The Hague Airport/ RTHA

Rotterdam The Hague Airport is made for the people who fly to and from this airport near Rotterdam and The Hague. The most recent information, updates etc. can be found on the app that is called RTHA. For a full guide to Rotterdam/ The Hague airport, have a look at another article here.

The best weather apps for The Netherlands

My favourite weather app for Amsterdam and the rest of The Netherlands is Buienalarm. The best part about this app is that it shows up to two hours when the rain will fall down. I’ve only had it a couple of times that Buienalarm was wrong, but I’ve been using this weather app in The Netherlands for years now. There are a radar and a weather forecast as well included in the app. Turn your notifications on for several locations to immediately be aware of the rain that’s coming your way.

Buienradar is one of the very useful travel apps that you can use in The Netherlands. While it’s not as specific as Buienalarm, it’s useful to discover the weather prediction in the long-term. Including options to see whether hail, snow or thunder is heading your way. That makes it one of the best apps to have for travelling through The Netherlands if you don’t fancy getting a headache because of hail.

Great public transportation apps for The Netherlands

Reisplanner ns.

Reisplanner by NS is the official Dutch railways’ service app. This train app for The Netherlands is a free app that has all the current train travel information. If there are delays or disruptions, planned work etc. it all shows up. The Netherlands has a big train network, so this app is very useful. All the stations are included, as well as any amenities you can find there. It includes information on the length of the train, how crowded it is and plenty of more things. That makes Reisplanner one of the most useful public transport apps in The Netherlands.

My ultimate favourite app for The Netherlands is the public transport app called 9292, sometimes called 9292ov. This planner is used by most people in The Netherlands to plan their public transport journey. 9292 included the fastest routes, whether there are delays and changes and more. The 9292 app is also available in English.

NS International

If you’re planning on taking an international train from Amsterdam or any other big train station in The Netherlands, then NS International will be a very useful transport app in The Netherlands. You can have a look at your current tickets or buy new tickets.

For the best information and app for public transport in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, I can recommend you download RET. This free public transport app for Rotterdam has all the current information on departures and arrivals for the ferry, bus, metro and tram. The RET app also includes information about the frequently asked questions. And even about service points which can be very useful if you lost or found items.

Are you planning on cycling or walking through The Netherlands? This doesn’t mean cycling through a city, this means cycling long distances. This cycling and walking app for The Netherlands includes everything you need to plan your cycle ride or walk. The only downside is that you need a basic understanding of Dutch, however, with some Google Translate here and there you’ll be fine. You can download maps to access them offline as well.

The best food apps for The Netherlands

If you’re looking for a useful restaurant reviews app in The Netherlands, then The Fork is for you. No fake reviews, just real and great tips for great restaurants to visit in The Netherlands and Amsterdam. It’s possible to make reservations via the app and you might even score some discounts that pop up every now and then.

Thuisbezorgd

Whether you’re staying in a hostel, hotel or apartment in The Netherlands, sometimes you don’t want to cook or eat out. Then the food app Thuisbezorgd is your hero in The Netherlands and Amsterdam. This food delivery app will make your dreams come true. The only issue is that the app is in Dutch, but if you’re hungry there’s nothing you can’t do. Including using Google Translate to make your foodies’ dreams come true. You can pay with non-Maestro cards as well, which is especially for foreigners a big plus.

If you’re a vegan or vegetarian and travelling to The Netherlands, you might have heard of this app called Happy Cow. This app can be used all over the world. It’s useful to discover restaurants and cafes that offer great vegan and vegetarian food in The Netherlands and Amsterdam. This is a must have food app for Amsterdam for sure as you can find most vegan restaurants of The Netherlands here. However, vegan food is expanding rapidly to other parts of the country so in smaller cities, you’ll be able to find places as well.

This is another food delivery app in The Netherlands, but not my ultimate favourite. The reason for that is that you cannot find Deliveroo all over The Netherlands. And if you were planning on getting a delivery in the middle of the night after the club, then it’s usually not the best. However, if you’re in a big city such as Amsterdam or Utrecht then Deliveroo is a great food delivery app.

Toogoodtogo

This is one of the best apps that you need to download for The Netherlands. If you’re on a budget, like to live eco-friendly, or both in The Netherlands, then this is great for you. Toogoodtogo is an application that is made to decrease the massive amount of food waste that we have in The Netherlands. You can pick up leftovers from restaurants, cafes and supermarkets for a very cheap price of around 3 euros (sometimes more or less). Every day the products that are leftovers differ, so it’s a surprise for you as well. Bring your own bag so we can decrease the amount of plastic together as well.

Communication apps in The Netherlands

What’s app.

The app that I, together with most of Europe, use every day is What’s App. This is a free messenger app that is easy to help you connecting with your friends and family back home, or with the new local Dutch friends you made. One downside, you need data to use What’s App if you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. An upside to What’s App is that this service is way more secure than most messaging apps out there. So are you planning on making local friends? Then don’t forget to download one of the top travel apps for Holland and The Netherlands.

Best dating apps for The Netherlands

With Bumble women are in charge of the dating scene all over the world. But, Bumble actually also has an option to look to meet friends. So, whether you’re looking for friends in a new country or just something fun, Bumble is a must-have travel app for The Netherlands.

Next up is Tinder. While some see Tinder as a hookup application, there are actually more success stories than you might think. So, give it a shot and maybe you end up with a nice souvenir.

Happn is the dating app that is often used in The Netherlands. If you were wondering who that beautiful woman or man was that just passed you, there’s quite a chance you can actually find them in the Happn app. With this application, you will see every one of the preferred genders that you cross paths with. Now, all there’s left is hoping they will like you back. At least you now know their name for your stalking adventures.

Apps to find accessible restaurants, attractions, toilets & more in The Netherlands

Ongehinderd.

Ongehinderd is an application that is only in Dutch. But one that is still very useful to find accessible attractions, restaurants and more in The Netherlands. It’s very useful to be prepared and not eventually get disappointed because you had a certain restaurant in mind.

The Wheelmate app is incredibly useful to find accessible toilets. But also disabled parking places all over The Netherlands. With this parking & toilets app for The Netherlands, you can easily save your location. The app automatically gives you information on where you can find disabled toilets. And where you can find disabled parking spaces in the neighbourhood.

Accommodation apps for The Netherlands

Hostelworld & hostelbookers.

If you’re looking for the best hostels and prices in The Netherlands, then Hostelworld and Hostelbookers are two of the accommodation apps you should use in The Netherlands.

Booking.com

The Booking.com application is great to book accommodation quickly. Not to mention that you can easily change the reservation and often don’t need to fill in your credit card until the same day. You can find everything that you’re searching for on the Booking app. From luxurious hotels to apartments and from hostels to small bed & breakfasts.

Couchsurfing

The last accommodation app you should use in The Netherlands is Couchsurfing if you’re on a budget. Now, many people are searching for a free bed or couch to stay in, especially in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. However, it’s always worth a try so you can spend your money on other things.

You might’ve noticed I didn’t include the Airbnb app. The reason for this is the fact that Airbnb is not a great company who thinks of the locals. Airbnb is one of the reasons why the housing crisis in Amsterdam got even worse. If you can stay with the owners in the same apartment and only rent a room (as it was originally meant for), then it’s okay. Or when the owners of the house are on a trip of a month or so. Not when the houses are sublet by the big companies and real estate agents who prefer to take advantage of tourists with the absurd prices. And they will not allow locals to buy or rent the house because locals cannot afford to pay the crazy amounts. Please think again whether you should use Airbnb in The Netherlands or not. Airbnb is one of the reasons that force locals out of the city because they cannot afford to live there anymore. Airbnb doesn’t enforce the rules that were created by the local council either because they simply don’t care about people.

Other useful apps for The Netherlands

Social deal.

If you’re interested in budget travelling through The Netherlands, then downloading the Social Deal app will be a lifesaver. From amazing deals at major attractions in The Netherlands to great hotel offers and more.

This party app gets you connected to party-loving locals and visitors in The Netherlands really easy. People will invite you to parties and more. It used to be known as Party with a Local but changed to Party With. However, it’s a game changer for the party lovers.

There’s a big chance that you’re not from The Netherlands when you’re reading this. There’s a whole world out there that uses different units than we do in The Netherlands. That’s why this is the perfect converter for your travels to Europe. This converter is for currencies, temperatures, weight and more. Now, if you’re aware of another app that is great for converting clothing sizes, please let me know. The ones I’ve seen and tried to use don’t include many countries or sizes.

Although Google Maps can be helpful (that you can use offline if you download a certain place), I prefer Maps.me. Why? Because in this app you can easily get directions or even discover restaurants or other places in the area, all while being offline.

Netflix anyone? We all know how some news sites aren’t available in other countries, or how websites as Netflix have a lot more content in other countries. With Nord VPN it’s very easy to get to other international websites. And it’s the best VPN for Europe and the other continents. If you’re looking for the best VPN for Amsterdam or The Netherlands, then you’d want to have a look at Nord VPN, it has never let me down.

Google Photos

This application is great, so you can easily back up your photos on your phone, so you won’t lose them even if your phone gets stolen. There’s one downside to this app and that is the fact that the photos are decreased in image size and quality.

Rise is a great app for when you want to know when the sunset or sunrise takes place. It also gives you information what time you can find the first and last light of the day in The Netherlands.

This application is only in Dutch, but gives you information of where you can find public toilets in The Netherlands. Lijst means list and it’s the list that shows you the toilets that are closest to you. Kaart means map and here you can see all the toilets. You can also search a city and find public toilets this way. The toilets can be anywhere, from a train station to a shop to a harbour.

Most useful and best travel apps for Amsterdam, Noord- Holland

Amsterdam city guide.

This app is the best offline app for Amsterdam. This application has everything about Amsterdam that you want to know, besides this 2 day local itinerary , these 40+ facts and the cheapest hostels . You can find over 800 addresses in Amsterdam in this app, including where to get the best food in Amsterdam. When you have downloaded the information, there’s no internet needed. You can search by neighbourhoods in Amsterdam and navigate easily.

The Amsterdam Dance Event is the biggest event in Amsterdam. To make your visit to ADE in Amsterdam a bit smoother, they’ve created an app, named Woov. On this ADE application, you’ll find all the relevant information on events, artists and venues. But also, communities. Here you can meet other like-minded people, personalised recommendations and you can even create your own schedule in the app.

VaarWater app

If you’re renting a boat in Amsterdam, then you’d want to download one of the best Amsterdam travel apps. This boating app makes it incredibly easy to sail through the canals of Amsterdam. Discover routes, where to place your boat and things to see and do in the areas. It even includes a speedometer, weather forecast of Amsterdam and more.

This is the best taxi app for Amsterdam. The reason? This is one of the biggest and most reliable taxi companies in Amsterdam. This way you know you’re not getting ripped off. So, if you’re in Amsterdam looking for a taxi app, this is it.

Also, I didn’t include Uber on this list. The reason why is that Uber doesn’t care about its drivers, their health and anyone can be a driver if they fill out three questions. There’s been a lot of anger directed toward Uber because they don’t have any standards for drivers. They charge a lot of commission and don’t have rules to make sure the drivers rest. Because of the lack of rules from the side of Uber deathly accidents have happened in The Netherlands. The drivers were driving way too long, were speeding, etc. People got killed in The Netherlands because of bad management by Uber. So, I would only recommend you use TCA in Amsterdam. Of course, not every Uber driver is a bad one, but still.

The GVB is the municipal transport company of Amsterdam and has the best Amsterdam public transport app. The GVB app can be used for public transport within Amsterdam. It can also be used within the rest of The Netherlands. But I prefer to use the GVB app only for Amsterdam and use the 9292 ov public transportation app for the rest of The Netherlands. You can use the GVB app in English to see when and which the tram, metro, bus or night bus in Amsterdam leaves with this app. This public transport app of Amsterdam shows the best routes to take as well as the times and delays or detours.

I hope this article was useful for you and that these best travel apps will make your trip to The Netherlands a lot better. If you have other apps in mind that I forgot to include in this list, please let me know! I’m curious to know which ones those are. If you’re interested in more articles I can recommend you to see a local side of Amsterdam , explore Maastricht or discover a perfect day trip near Amsterdam with Hoorn.  Are you curious which beautiful walking sandals, boots and shoes are great for traveling to The Netherlands and Europe? Then have a look at this article.  Share this article!!

Discover Rotterdam

Want to join us on an exciting tour of Rotterdam? Pick one of the walking or cycling routes from this guide, and over the course of a few hours you’ll make one discovery after the other! And best of all: you can take this discovery tour at your own pace, in just a few hours or throughout the entire day.

Roaming Rotterdam

We’ve included two walking routes (9 and 13 km) and two cycling routes (14 and 17 km). They all start and end at Rotterdam Central Station . And they take you past a variety of well-known landmarks and all sorts of interesting areas that are just off the beaten track. From bustling port sites and green oases to the locals’ favourite café terraces .

Each of the descriptions in this booklet comes with a map of the entire route, meaning you can walk or cycle the entire route independently. Where possible, we’ve linked the cycling routes to existing junctions in the local bike networks. And the routes generally stick to dedicated bike lanes. Nevertheless, always watch out when you cross a road or intersection – for both cars and pedestrians. Have fun!
