Rafting adventure along the Snake River, surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Tetons

Visit to the Mormon Row Historic District inside Grand Teton National Park

Extensive exploration inside the world's first national park, Yellowstone National Park

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

The soul of the American West... Naturally inspiring, the landscapes of the American West challenge the imagination with jaw-dropping canyons, gurgling mud pots, geysers, and wide-open spaces... while towering mountains are a study in contrast, harboring wildlife and man-made wonders.

A day at ta guest ranch, a taste of the cowboy life at a working wyoming ranch.

Make your way through Wyoming's breathtaking Bighorn Mountains to an authentic (and fun) western ranch experience at TA Guest Ranch in Buffalo. Homesteaded in 1884, the ranch was once the site of a shootout during the infamous Johnson County War that pitched cowboy against cowboy in these parts in 1892 – you can still see some of the old bullet holes! But today's visit will be a peaceful one… where you can choose to meet a horse whisperer, learn roping techniques from real cowboys, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, or saddle up for a horseback ride... and enjoy a private lunch on the ranch.

A night at the rodeo

Attend the exciting cody nite rodeo (seasonal, june – august).

Way out here in Wyoming, nothing promises more real Western fun than an honest-to-goodness rodeo... especially in a town named for the legendary Wild West showman, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and often called the "Rodeo Capital of the World." Established in 1938 and operating June through August, the Cody Nite Rodeo is the world's longest-running nightly rodeo. Get set for an evening filled with bull riding, saddle bronco riding, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo clowns, and a "calf scramble" for kids 12 and under.

Old Faithful Inn

Stay in a classic national historic landmark in yellowstone national park.

One of the largest log structures in the world, Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1904 of native lodgepole pine – and the epitome of the "National Park Rustic" architectural style – it is set within walking distance of Old Faithful Geyser, just one of Yellowstone's many natural wonders... including geysers, fumaroles and boiling hot springs.

This relatively untamed territory makes you proud of those who had the foresight to set aside the space for National Parks.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Snake River, the journey is roughly 2 hours and requires stepping in and out of an inflatable raft
  • Guided horseback riding on a working cattle ranch, guests are required to show ability to mount/unmount and for safety reasons, a weight restriction of 225 pounds is in place.

There are no elevators at The Ranch at Ucross or at the Holiday Inn® Cody at Buffalo Bill Village, and while none of the planned activities are especially strenuous or difficult, we urge caution when engaging in activities at high elevations. If you have a heart condition or lung ailment, please consult your physician before you book your trip.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The Jackson Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel are all non-smoking hotels and a very large fine will be assessed if it is determined that anyone has smoked while on property.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

The high temperatures in the summer months average 70 to 90°F (21 to 32°C) and the lows average 40 to 60°F (4 to 16°C). The overnight temperatures can drop to the freezing point even during the summer at the highest elevations. Rainfall is light to moderate throughout the region. Salt Lake City receives the least amount of rain with an average of less than 1 in (25 mm) per month during summer; Jackson averages 1.5 in (38 mm) and Rapid City averages 2.5 in (63 mm.)

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

All of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee except for the Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and The Ranch at Ucross.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

The national park lodges do not have televisions or Internet hook-ups, so bring along a good book to read!

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Long pants or jeans (long pants and closed-toed shoes are required for the horseback riding)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • A book or e-reader to read in the evening, or downloaded podcasts or video programs to watch during your free time.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Adventure

6 days | follow in the footsteps of cowboys as you explore wyoming’s wild terrain.

SASY - Person viewing the colourful Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

Embark on a discovery of some of the most iconic natural landmarks in the USA. Visit the country’s oldest national park – the immense Yellowstone National Park – where Old Faithful Geyser shoots boiling water to the sky, bubbling hot rivers flow, and herds of bison roam. Spot wildlife like moose, bears and beavers hidden within the Grand Teton Mountain Range and follow along with a real-life wolf tracker who’ll teach you their secret tracking tricks in the wee hours of the morning. In the evenings, unwind like the cowboys used to do, with dinner, drinks and entertainment in the famous frontier town of Jackson, Wyoming.

Trip overview

  • Enjoy three full days exploring Yellowstone National Park, as you explore both the northern loop and the southern loop, witnessing all of the park’s highlights.
  • Explore the stunning scenery of Grand Teton National Park – home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears, as well as pristine lakes and incredible alpine terrain.
  • Meet up with an experienced wolf tracker in the wee hours of the morning for a unique opportunity to search for wolves in their natural habitat in Yellowstone National Park.
  • See Yellowstone’s most iconic sites like the powerful Old Faithful Geyser and the hypnotic Grand Prismatic Spring, then see if you can spot the park’s famous bison herds (from a safe distance, of course).
  • Spend two nights in Jackson – known for its cowboy heritage and culture – and visit the elk antler arch at the town square, surrounded by a mountain range.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, the Grand Canyon Conservancy. Donations help them protect Grand Canyon National Park and support trail restoration, conservation of native plants and wildlife, and educational programs.
  • This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • There are walking opportunities throughout this trip. We recommend you bring good quality walking shoes if you're keen to enjoy a hike - or two!

Welcome to Wyoming! Your adventure begins in the historic town of Jackson, where fur trappers and frontiersmen once gathered. Surrounded by towering mountain ranges and the meandering Snake River, Jackson is your gateway to discovering Yellowstone National Park. You’ll have a group meeting at 6 pm, followed by an optional welcome dinner. After, the evening is all yours to explore the town’s nightlife. Feel free to wander the plaza or maybe head to the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for a drink with your new fellow travellers.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, embark on a day of exploring Grand Teton National Park – one of the most stunning places in Wyoming. The Grand Teton Mountain Range rises above a scene rich with abundant wildlife and pristine lakes. Stop at Jenny Lake and gaze up in awe at the surrounding landscape. Perhaps take the optional boat trip across the lake for more incredible views of the Tetons from the water, or hike to Inspiration Point. Maybe have a picnic, spot a moose or even a grizzly bear and enjoy the serenity of this remarkable place. Other wildlife you might find include elk, beavers and black bears, so keep your eyes peeled! Continue to viewing sites for buffalo and antelope herds along the Gros Ventre River and Antelope Flats, then visit the Mormon Row Historic District to see the iconic Moulton Barn with the Tetons towering behind. For dinner, you'll head out as a group for a western-style chuck wagon dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Grand Teton - Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle (round-trip) - USD20

Grand Teton National Park does not allow commercially guided day hiking, so if you choose to do any hiking in the park, it will be self-guided.

Authorized Permittee of Grand Teton National Park

This morning, drive from Jackson to Yellowstone National Park – the crown jewel of the American national parks – and spend the day exploring with your leader. Yellowstone is the country’s first national park – a mountain wilderness home to grizzly bears, wolves and herds of buffalo and elk. You’ll take the southern loop today and watch as Old Faithful Geyser sprays over 4000 gallons (14,000 litres) of boiling water into the air. Then, be hypnotised by the startling colours of the Grand Prismatic Spring – you should definitely have your camera handy today! You have three full days to explore the park, which means you can take your time at all the sites and fully immerse yourself in this unique landscape.

  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Yellowstone National Park - Southern Loop Featuring Old Faithful Geyser & Grand Prismatic Spring

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Today we will spend a full day exploring Yellowstone National Park. You’ll focus on the northern loop of the park today, which passes by the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone – an icon of the park’s complex and dramatic geological history. Pass the Norris Geyser Basin as well – the hottest and oldest geyser in Yellowstone’s thermal areas – among other sights along the loop. Along the way, look out for abundant wildlife, including birdlife and grazing elk.

  • Yellowstone National Park - Northern Loop Featuring Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone & Norris Geyser Basin

Yellowstone is a huge park and we will cover a lot of ground during our exploration. We'll spend approximately 9-10 hours in the park today, of which you can expect to spend about 3.5 hours in the vehicle.

Wake up super early this morning, ready for a very special last day in Yellowstone National Park – you’ll join a naturalist wildlife guide on a wolf-tracking adventure in a quieter, off-the-beaten-path section of the park. This is an ideal place to look for wolves, as well as lots of other wildlife like bison, elk and bears. High-power binoculars will be provided during the tour, so you have the best shot at glimpsing these elusive beasts. Check out the Mammoth Hot Springs in the park, then continue back to the hotel. Enjoy some time to rest and recharge this afternoon, then head out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant with your group.

  • Yellowstone - Wolf Tracking Experience

Due to the very early start and remote locations visited, we recommend you pack snacks to carry with you during the Wolf Tracking experience. We'll spend approximately 9-10 hours in the park today, of which you can expect to spend about 4 hours in the vehicle.

This morning after breakfast, take a scenic drive back to Jackson. Watch the Idaho scenery pass you by as you follow the western edge of the Tetons and then cross the Snake River in Wyoming. You’ll arrive in Jackson at about 3 pm this afternoon, where your trip will come to an end. If you’d like to extend your stay, just speak to your booking agent.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

It’s recommended that you don’t book any flights home until at least 6 pm tonight, in case there are any delays in the transit back to Jackson.

We had an absolutely fantastic time on our tour with Great Western Expeditions! We were a group of 11 people ranging in age from 10 to 78 and they ... read more did a fantastic job balancing all of our needs. Both Laurie, our guide, and Larry, our driver were so knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. We saw so much in just one day and never had to worry about a thing! They also provided an elevated picnic lunch which was delicious-- we had to eat it on the bus because of rain but they were somehow able to make even that feel special. Thanks so much to Great Western Expeditions for a perfect bucket-list worthy day!

Having her set up the lodging, the itineraries, and just her overall knowledge of where to go and what time to be there was exceptional. I cannot recommend our guide, David Buth, enough! What a terrific person to have led our trip. He was professional, kind, practically a “professor”, and very knowledgeable about everything and everywhere we went. It’s obvious that he enjoys his work and does it very well. He is a true educator, and we were so pleased with his expertise and fun personality. The only thing I didn’t like, was that the first couple days we were in a mini bus that was very uncomfortable to sit in, hard to see out of, and generally not great. Luckily, we were then transferred to an Escalade, which we had been promised and was much more appropriate and so much more comfortable. Thanks again, Theresa and Vince Trujillo

How to See Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone in One Trip

By Lydia Mansel

Grand Teton and Yellowstone Itinerary How to Visit Both in One Trip

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

On October 15, 2022, Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance Road reopened to regular visitor traffic after months of repairs. Closed to most travelers since this summer’s historic floods , the route was one of the last remaining road closures affecting travel in and out of the park. According to the National Park Service , 99 percent of Yellowstone's roads are now “effectively [open].”

Many travelers pivoted their summer travel plans from Yellowstone to Grand Teton National Park in June and July due to the floods—resulting in an influx of visitors to the Teton Range and Jackson Hole . The parks offer very different landscapes and experiences, though, with Yellowstone boasting iconic natural and geologic formations, and Grand Teton home to towering peaks and glistening lakes. Now that Yellowstone is wholly reopened to the public, aside from the usual seasonal road closures , and there's the chance to visit both, the question becomes: Why choose just one?

There’s no better time than to plan a bucket-list trip to northwestern Wyoming to check off two of the country’s most beautiful national parks. (And yes, that includes during the off-season; the coldest months of the year.) Winter temperatures in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) may hover between 0 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, but the wilderness continues to thrive in the season’s serenity and solitude, and is one of the best times to see either park's landscapes come to life.

Whether you’re heading out west in the dead of winter or planning an excursion to the region’s peak summer months, here’s how to experience the peaks, lakes, and lush forests of Jackson as well as the grandeur of Greater Yellowstone—all in one Grand Teton and Yellowstone itinerary. And as an added bonus, we’ve rounded up some luxurious ways to avoid the need to drive between the two (especially in winter when most roads are seasonally impassible), whether you prefer an adrenaline-inducing winter snowmobile expedition or a comfortable private-flight excursion.

Getting there

If you’re going to tackle both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone, the best jumping-off point is Jackson, Wyoming . The Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is located within Grand Teton National Park, and it’s just a 15-minute drive—Uber and Lyft are available—to downtown Jackson. Once there, you’ll find everything you need to begin your journey, including top-tier tour companies, a variety of lodging options, and places to purchase last-minute gear and clothing. For easy access to the best hikes and wildlife watching spots in the park, rent a car.

Where to stay in Jackson Hole

It may not be known as a budget-friendly place, but Jackson does have its share of reasonably priced hotels. For a trip where you’ll spend the majority of your time outside, book a comfortable room (or one of the recently renovated suites) at Mountain Modern , a multi-building boutique design motel within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the town square. Rates start at just over $100 in the offseason, and many of its amenities are specifically curated to aid in guests’ outdoor adventures: self-service laundry, a bike repair station, and dedicated spaces for storing equipment. There are also plenty of luxe options in town, including Hotel Jackson and the Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole .

What to do in Grand Teton National Park

For many, the draw to the American West hinges on seeing wildlife and snow-capped mountains. With its eight 12,000-foot-plus peaks and rich array of native fauna, Grand Teton National Park certainly delivers. If you choose to drive through the park yourself, purchase a pass at Moose Entrance Station , the closest of the three park entrances to Jackson. From here, you’ll head out along the park’s 42-mile Scenic Loop Drive, which is made of the inner road (open between May 1 and October 31) and the outer road of the park. While it would be impossible to traverse every square inch of the 310,000 protected acres in just a few days, these two roads provide access to most of the park’s major highlights.

Photo opportunities abound in and around the Tetons, with the classic shot of T.A Moulton Barn along Mormon Row—a historical district associated with its 1900s farming community—topping the list. Ansel Adams took his famous photograph of the Tetons at Snake River Overlook , and Oxbow Bend is a sight to behold, particularly in the morning when mountain views are reflected in the river.

While Wyoming may be landlocked, Grand Teton National Park is no stranger to water. In fact, it’s home to six morainal lakes at the base of the mountains and over 100 backcountry and alpine lakes. Jenny Lake is widely acknowledged as a focal point of the park. It’s surrounded by hiking trails ( Cascade Canyon is a visitor favorite), and during the warmer months, you can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle across the 12,000-year-old lake.

Keep a keen eye out for elk, moose, bison, and pronghorn as you drive and explore the park, particularly if you venture to Schwabacher Landing or Elk Ranch flats . No matter where you are, be sure to stay at least 25 yards away from wildlife (and 100 yards from bears and wolves). However, if grizzlies, otters, and great grey owls are on your must-see list, your best bet is to go with a wildlife expert or guide who will have a thorough understanding of the best spots and times for possible sightings.

How to travel between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone year-round

With only 31 miles between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone—linked by John D. Rockefeller, Jr Memorial Parkway—it’s completely possible to see both in one trip. This is no long-weekend trip, though. Ideally, you’ll want to give yourself at least a week, with two travel days, at least two days in Grand Teton National Park, and three days in Yellowstone. If you aren’t interested in driving yourself through both parks (which is not possible during the winter), there are plenty of ways to capitalize on a relatively short period of time in the area: Jackson Hole EcoTour Wildlife Adventures specializes in excursions to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. Their incredibly knowledgeable guides and naturalists are available year-round for half-day, full-day, multi-day, and completely customized tours of the surrounding area. The Yellowstone and Grand Teton Multi-Day Wildlife Tour —which includes wildlife spotting in the Jackson Hole Valley and exploring the hidden gems of the world’s first national park—is available in the spring, summer, and fall and can be extended from two to five days, depending on what you want to see and do.

In order to travel to Yellowstone from December 15 through early March, you’ll need to travel by either snowmobile or snow coach: Scenic Safaris , another Jackson-based tour company, brings guests the 60 miles to Yellowstone’s South gate, where you’ll depart via over-snow transportation and spend a full day covering the areas and points of interest in the park’s lower loop—Old Faithful, Moose Falls, and Lewis Canyon, among others.

Another option, particularly for travelers who may have already explored Yellowstone before, is the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole ’s Day with Wolves Excursion . The hotel recently announced the partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris and Yellowstone Safari Company, offering guests the ability to book a private flight from Teton Village to the northern edge of Yellowstone. After flying over the Tetons and the greater Yellowstone basin, the eight-passenger Pilatus aircraft lands in Livingston, Montana, where an expert naturalist guide leads a day-long immersive learning experience with a chance to see Yellowstone’s gray wolf population (as well as other wildlife in the park). A portion of the $16,000 trip price tag is donated to the Yellowstone Wolf Project and the Environmental Defense Fund .

Other alternatives for travelers looking to see both parks while in the area include horseback riding through Yellowstone Park and Teton Wilderness Area with Wilderness Trails, Inc , a five-day summer bike tour with Trek Travel , and exploring by e-bike.

How to visit Yellowstone after the floods

For a deep dive into what to see in Yellowstone and the best times to visit, check out our guide to experiencing the park in every season . Activities and modes of transport can vary greatly depending on the time of year you’re visiting, whether that's during months when there’s consistent snowfall, spring or fall (when snow can still often be in the forecast), or the summer months that can bring heat advisories and crowds. And whether you want glamping or a luxe resort, there are plenty of places to stay in Yellowstone National Park .

Know before you go to Yellowstone

Be sure to check the National Park Service website for road closures, weather advisories, and any additional alerts before visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park . You can also download the NPS app here for easy access on-the-go.

Experience Safari-Style Meals and Multi-Day Tours in Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Wyoming

Tour yellowstone and grand teton with great western expeditions for an unforgettable experience..

Great Western Expeditions is not just another Jackson, Wyoming tour company. Family owned and operated, the staff has taken national park touring to the next level. No matter which excursion you book, you’ll be able to fully customize it. Most tours are even private.

Take, for instance, the Sunriser Breakfast Experience. Your guide will pick you up in a luxury vehicle and take you on a stunning early morning tour of Grand Teton National Park where you’ll learn more than you could’ve ever imagined about the park, spot wildlife and soak in gorgeous views. Your final destination? A picturesque breakfast served safari-style in the great outdoors. Tours come with basic picnics, or you can upgrade to a more elevated picnic. Think tablecloths, flowers in vases and delicious food like fondue and charcuterie boards.

Family celebrations brought to a new level by Great Western Expeditions

This tour just scratches the surface of Great Western Expeditions’ offerings. Book a Wolf & Predator safari to learn more about Yellowstone’s carnivores. Or, opt for a longer trip to experience Wyoming outside the national parks.

Visiting in winter? Take a day off the slopes and book a wildlife tour and other winter activities including a sleigh ride at the National Elk Refuge. One snowy tour you absolutely can’t miss is the Igloo Snowshoe Experience. Enjoy this outdoor adventure beginning with a short snowshoe excursion on a private ranch where your guide will lead you to a winter wonderland. Picnic and relax in a clear-view bubble dome igloo that’s nestled amongst the aspens and pines. To sip, there’s specialty hot beverages and delicious charcuterie to munch while watching the snowflakes fall before returning via snowshoe.

Snowshoeing with Great Western Expeditions

There’s more to see in Wyoming than just Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. The best way to tour? A Wyoming Beyond excursion which includes multiple days of touring western Wyoming. The parks are included on these tours, but you’ll find so much more to love about the Cowboy State from the history of the plains Native Americans and cowboys to the ancient dinosaurs that once roamed the state.

The Caesar family has been sharing the Jackson, Grand Teton and Yellowstone region with visitors for more than 30 years. They are passionate about travel and wildlife and have brought their experiences with some of the world’s best tour companies home to Jackson to create a memorable experience for their guests.

“Our love for Wyoming is the reason we created Great Western Expeditions,” says owner Rob Caesar. “After spending our lives exploring all of its treasures, we chose to follow our passion and now share these amazing landscapes with visitors from around the world.”

Watching wildlife though a spotting scope with Great Western Expeditions

Traveling with a group? Great Western Expeditions caters to big parties too. Whether you’re planning a family reunion or a break for staff at a corporate meeting, you can expect a totally customized tour to see wildlife and enjoy a fabulous meal in the field.

Whether you’re looking for a half-day, full-day or multi-day tour or are imagining a custom experience, Great Western Expeditions will create a vacation you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Day 1 : Fly to Montana

We fly to Missoula and check in to our comfortable accommodations. The evening is at leisure to get acquainted with your fellow traveling companions.

Day 2 : Whitefish

Our day begins with a visit to The Historical Museum of Fort Missoula, a 32-acre park that tells the story of western Montana’s past. Walk through over 20 preserved historic buildings and structures dating back to 1863, including Grant Creek Schoolhouse, Quartermaster’s Storehouse, Frenchtown Mill Stones, and much more. Afterwards, we travel north from Missoula to Whitefish, viewing some of the most spectacular scenery our nation has to offer in Montana’s Big Sky Country. Along the way, we break for a delicious included Welcome Lunch in Polson and take in amazing views of Flathead Lake and the surrounding Flathead National Forest. Arriving in Whitefish, we stop at a nearby mountain resort to enjoy a scenic gondola ride to the mountaintop for bird’s-eye views. We then check in to our overnight accommodations and have a restful evening.

Day 3 : Going-to-the-Sun Road

After an included breakfast, we’re off to Glacier National Park, which features over 20 glaciers and 200 lakes as standing reminders of the last Ice Age. We board vintage 1930s Red Buses with roll-back tops for a journey on one of the world’s most scenic routes, Going-to-the-Sun Road. Throughout this drive, learn more about the park’s history from an expert guide, take in views of the towering mountains, and gaze upon a variety of majestic wildlife including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, and moose. Enjoy lunch within the park at St. Mary Village before we continue to Great Falls and check in to our accommodations for the evening.

Day 4 : Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center

We begin our day with a tour of the Lewis & Clark Historic Trail Interpretive Center and relive the explorers’ brave journey. Overlooking the beautiful Missouri River, this center includes exhibits, artifacts, films, and a two-story diorama of the expedition’s portage of the river’s waterfalls. After an included lunch, we visit the C.M. Russell Museum, an art complex that’s dedicated to Charles Marion Russell. Known as one of America’s greatest artists, his primary focus was the signature “cowboy art” that showcased Western cultures, landscapes, and wildlife. We then depart for Helena, Montana’s capital and the heart of this Big Sky State. We check in to our hotel for the next two nights and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Day 5 : Gates of the Mountains

Following our included breakfast, we embark on a guided city tour of Helena. Learn about the storied history of this vibrant city and marvel at the Gothic-style cathedral, which rivals those in Europe with its stunning towers and stained-glass windows. Our tour makes stops at various intriguing attractions, like the Montana State Capitol building. This afternoon, we board a riverboat to discover the epitome of Montana’s natural beauty, Gates of the Mountains, coined by famous explorer Meriwether Lewis. A guide narrates our journey down the Missouri River, sharing historic stories of Lewis and Clark’s explorations. As we marvel at the rugged scenery with towering limestone cliffs to both sides of the boat, keep watch for intriguing wildlife. Tonight, we enjoy an included dinner together and return to our hotel.

Day 6 : Yellowstone National Park

This morning, we begin our drive to Gardiner, Montana, the original gateway to America’s first national park. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 to protect a large variety of wildlife and preserve the world’s most extraordinary collection of geysers and hot springs. We have free time in the Mammoth Hot Springs area to explore nature’s beauty before traveling through the northern loop of Yellowstone, where we may have the opportunity to be part of the notorious bison traffic jam. This evening, we travel to West Yellowstone for our accommodations with shops and restaurants conveniently nearby.

Day 7 : Old Faithful

After an included continental breakfast, we return to Yellowstone National Park to enjoy a full day of soaking up the natural wonders with a guided tour. During our adventure, we make stops at Old Faithful, the world’s most famous geyser, and Artist Point. Have your camera ready to capture stunning views of Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls and the multicolored Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. A scenic drive then takes us through Hayden Valley, a region of lush forest meadows and haven for wildlife. Watch for bison and other fascinating animals! We depart Yellowstone this afternoon and settle in for a comfortable two-night stay in Jackson, Wyoming.

Day 8 : The Grand Tetons

This morning, we visit Grand Teton National Park, boasting picturesque views of shimmering lakes, rolling meadows, and soaring mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks. Watch for elk, bison, fox, moose, and bald eagles as we venture through the park and take advantage of premier photo opportunities. Learn about the past, present, and future of this protected area with immaculate exhibits and a short video during our stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. We also visit the Chapel of the Transfiguration, a rustic log chapel with 100-year-old history and picture-perfect vistas of the Tetons, including Grand Teton. Tonight, we enjoy a covered wagon ride in Cache Creek Canyon to our included dinner - a tasty barbecue cookout accompanied with the music and songs of the Old West!

Day 9 : Salt Lake City

Step aboard our comfortable motorcoach this morning for one last scenic drive, taking us from Jackson into Salt Lake City. Along the way, we break at Bear Lake Overlook to stretch our legs as we take in spectacular views of the turquoise water nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Tonight, we celebrate with our new friends at a special Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner. Our accommodations this evening are in downtown Salt Lake City.

Day 10 : Fly Home

We return home with fond memories of our Rockies adventure.

The Best Things to do in Grand Teton National Park

Discover the incredible sites and the best things to do in Grand Teton National Park, one of my favorite places on earth.

What to do in Grand Teton National Park with Kids

With steep mountains jutting up directly from the earth, glass-like lakes, thick forests, and abundant wildlife, Grand Teton National Park, located in western Wyoming, is a guaranteed favorite for families. Not only are the views great, but there are more activities available than you’ll probably ever have time to do! We really love this park because it’s big enough and diverse enough to spend several days in, but not so large that you feel overwhelmed.

1. Hike to Hidden Falls & Inspiration Point

This easy 2-mile round trip hike requires a boat shuttle across beautiful Jenny Lake. This makes it a unique hike and especially fun for kids! Boat rides are always a good motivator. This is definitely one of the most popular things to do in Grand Teton National Park, so you need to plan accordingly, because the crowds can get out of control, especially during the summers.

The parking lot will be full by 8:00 AM! So if you only want to have one early morning during your trip, I recommend doing this hike on that day. Alternatively, you could go in the evening if you’re confident you and the kids can hike fast enough to catch the last boat! See the hours below.

Jenny Lake Boating Shuttle Hours:

Boats run every 10-15 minutes

May 15 – June 6: 10 am-4 pm

June 7 – Sept 6: 7 am-7 pm

Sept 7 – Sept 30: 10 am-4 pm

Jenny Lake Boating Prices:

Adult Round-trip (12 yrs to 61 yrs) – $ 18.00

Adult One-Way – $ 10.00

Child Round-trip (2 yrs to 11 yrs) – $ 10.00

Child One-Way – $ 8.00

Senior Round-trip (62 yrs and over) – $ 15.00

Under 2 years of age and over 80 yrs – FREE

See updated pricing and schedules

Catching the Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle will save you about 5 miles of hiking, so it’s definitely worth planning for. After you get off the boat, follow the trail for .5 miles to Hidden Falls, the only waterfall you’ll be able to see in Grand Teton National Park.

After admiring Hidden Falls, continue up the trail another .5 miles to Inspiration Point for a breathtaking view of Jenny Lake.

Distance: 2 Miles, out and back

Difficulty: Easy

Take a Hike

I’d say the hike to inspiration point is a must-do if you’re only doing one hike in Grand Teton National Park, but if you have time, definitely pick a few more hikes to do during your time here. These are our favorites, but read the Grand Teton Hiking Guide for more details.

  • Phelps Lake Overlook
  • Lakeshore Trail
  • Leigh & String Lakes
  • Death Canyon
  • Paintbrush Canyon
  • Jenny Lake Loop
  • Jackson Lake Overlook

Take a Boat Ride on Jackson Lake

When you think of THE Grand Tetons Lake, it’s probably Jackson Lake that you’re picturing. This lake, fed by the Snake River overlook in the north and emptying at Jackson Lake Dam in the south, is over 15 miles long and nearly 500 feet across. It’s huge! Jackson Lake butts right up to the jutting Teton Range and the only way to get to this side of the mountains is to take a boat ride. From Colter Bay, you can book a Jackson Lake Cruise, where you’ll get to be right next to the mountains and learn about the lake, mountains, and Grand Teton National Park with a well-educated guide.

It’s fascinating to see the park from the boat and learn so much interesting information. I recommend taking the lunch cruise at noon for several reasons: 1. You’ll get lunch along with your boat tour and save on time 2. The sun will be overhead on the boat canopy, so you’ll be mostly shaded during the 1.5-hour ride.

You can book your Jackson Lake Cruise at the boat office in Colter Bay. From the parking lot, go down to the water and take a left. You’ll see the office ahead of you. These lake cruises can sell out fast and are only sold day-of, so I recommend purchasing your ticket in the morning if possible. There is plenty of parking at Colter Bay, so don’t stress about not being able to park like at Jenny Lake. If you are too late for the lunch cruise, just book a ticket on a later cruise, it’s still great and you can eat lunch at one of the places to eat at Colter Bay.

Colter Bay is also a great place to swim, play at the beach, rent a kayak, canoe, or motorboat.

Jackson Lake Boat Cruise Times & Pricing:

June 16 – August 10* (the end date fluctuates with the level of Jackson Lake, which sometimes gets drained in years of drought)

SCENIC CRUISE

Times – 10:15 AM, 1:15 PM, 3:15 PM, 5:15 PM daily.

Adult – $42

Child – $21

BREAKFAST CRUISE

TIME – 7:15 AM except on Thursdays.

Adult – $54

Child – $29

LUNCH CRUISE

Time – 12:15 PM Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat

3. Rent a Kayak or Canoe from Jenny Lake or Jackson Lake

If you haven’t had enough of being on the water, you can:

  • Rent a kayak or canoe at Jenny Lake check pricing

Rent a kayak, canoe, or motor boat at Colter Bay on Jackson Lake (all watercraft are first come, first serve)

check pricing

  • Rent a kayak or pontoon at Signal Mountain Lodge on Jackson Lake (kayaks are first come, first serve, pontoons should be reserved several months or weeks in advance) check pricing

Walk Through Laurence S. Rockefeller Visitor Center & Preserve

If you’ve heard how Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone came to be, then you’ll understand the huge role that the Rockefeller family played. This 1,100-acre preserve was the last bit of land inside the park belonging to the family. It was just donated to the park in 2001.

There is a beautiful and interactive Visitor Center with beautiful eco-friendly architecture. You can watch films, enjoy air conditioning, get a Junior Ranger book, and learn all about the wildlife, geology, and the indigenous life that were the first inhabitants of this special place.

The preserve is just down the road from the Visitor Center and has a very tiny parking lot with only a few people allowed in at a time. This is another activity you’ll need to either arrive early for or go later. It’s meant to be a quiet preserve full of wildlife, which is why it has this restriction.

Play at the Beach

There are several good beaches in Grand Teton National Park. Here are our favorites for kids:

String Lake

String Lake is probably my very favorite spot in Grand Teton National Park, and it’s especially great for kids! It’s small and fairly shallow, making it a safe place for little swimmers. Surrounded by trees and mountains, it’s also fairly shady compared to the other lakes in the park. I love going at the end of the day to cool off from a long day of hiking and exploring. Pictures just don’t do this place justice, so you’ll have to see it for yourself!

Colter Bay is a beautiful, manmade bay in the middle of Jackson Lake, but it can get really crowded. There are picnic tables, a general store, a visitor center, and bathrooms. You can also rent kayaks, canoes, motorboats, or take a lake cruise.

Leek’s Marina

This Marina is hardly ever busy! Visitors come here to put in their boats but there are no rentals, which makes it less busy. There is an expansive amount of rock beach to play on. Even better, there’s a pizzeria right behind the marina so you can order a pizza to go and eat it on the beach and watch the boats go by! It’s the perfect picnic.

Signal Mountain Lodge

Located at the south of Jackson Lake, this is a less busy part of the park and you won’t have a problem finding parking or a spot at the beach. There is a general store, bathroom, and a restaurant which makes spending a few hours there convenient. You can also rent kayaks and pontoons, but the pontoons need to be reserved several weeks in advance in the summer.

Watch for Wildlife

There is plenty of wildlife to be seen in Grand Teton National Park. Elk, Bison, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Pronghorn, Moose, Rabbits, Chipmunks, and more!

“ Always keep a safe distance when viewing wildlife . Whether you are in your vehicle or on foot, you must maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from all other wildlife. Animals in the park are wild and may act aggressively if approached.” -National Park Service

These are some great videos to watch before you go to the park. They are short and informative.

Drive the 42-Mile Scenic Loop

This is one of the most popular Grand Teton National Park things to do and I always recommend that visitors try to do it on their first day to get a feel for the park and where everything is. Of course, feel free to make stops from this list along your way. It’s a great activity to do if the kids need some downtime or a nap. This loop will take you along some of the most stunning scenery in the Teton Park Road along the Teton mountain range, numerous lakes, and scenic overlooks

Visit Mormon Row Historic District

You’ve probably seen hundreds of pictures of the Grand Teton barn before. It’s probably the most iconic shot of the area, with the towering Teton Mountains in the background, but there’s a real history to this barn and the surrounding buildings. In 1890, a group of Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) settlers came to Wyoming to try to make a life and establish a settlement. Unfortunately, due to bad weather and lack of water, they had to leave and a settlement was never formed. But this barn and 27 homesteads remain as a testament of early settlers.

Not only is this a very scenic drive, but there is usually a herd of bison that roam around here, making it a great place for spotting wildlife.

Jenny Lake Scenic Drive

If you’re not a fan of hiking trails around Jenny Lake, I recommend taking the Jenny Lake Overlook Scenic Drive. This is a one-lane road that drives along one side of the lake and has stunning views.

Chapel of the Transfiguration

This historical Episcopal chapel was built in 1925 and still holds services every Sunday during the summer. Not only is it a picturesque chapel, but the scenery behind it is stunning.

This is my very favorite view in all of the Grand Teton National Park! Besides the barn at Mormon Row, it’s probably the most iconic view of the Grand Teton range. It’s beautiful any time of day, but especially in the morning and at sunset, when the water is calm and the mountains reflect on the smooth water of the Snake River.

Explore Jackson

The city of Jackson, Wyoming is only a few miles from Grand Teton National Park. It’s a great place to base yourself for exploring the park. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants, and it’s a really lively small city to hang out in. If you’re interested in doing rafting or other outdoor activities, a lot of them meet in Jackson. We love getting burgers and shakes at Jackson Drug.

Explore Teton Village

Teton Village is located even closer to Grand Teton National Park and it’s surrounded by the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort where you can ski in the winter and hike or mountain bike in the summer. We loved taking the gondola 9,000 feet up the mountain. The views over the valley are amazing.

They have a really fun and active kids’ club at Teton Village and also a ski camp in the winter and a mountain bike in the summer. There’s also a rock-climbing wall and a trampoline park on the property. The fun for kids here is never-ending.

We like getting hot drinks at South Cable and Thai food at Teton Thai. There are tons of fun restaurants and hotels all over the resort, including the Four Seasons on the high end and the Continuum on the lower end. I like staying in Teton Village because Moose Wilson Road takes you to a less-used entrance station at the south of the park.

Grand Teton National Park is a magical park and an especially great park for families. With a good mix of outdoor activities, wildlife viewing, and educational opportunities, kids will appreciate this beautiful park for the special place it is.

Greetings, Kind Folks! Thank you for taking the time to read and assist me! It's my inaugural visit to Yellowstone or any U.S. National Park.

Upon arriving in Bozeman on the 24th at 10 PM, we intend to stay overnight there. Would anyone recommend lodging halfway to West Yellowstone to shorten our travel distance the following day? Any other suggestions are welcome.

On the 25th, we'll journey to Old Faithful and stay in West Yellowstone. Given our late start at around 11 AM, do you think this itinerary is suitable, or should we consider altering our plans considering our travel from Bozeman?

On the 26th, we'll explore Grand Prismatic and other nearby attractions, also staying in West Yellowstone.

The 27th is reserved for exploring the Grand Canyon, with another night's stay in West Yellowstone.

On the 29th, we'll dedicate the day to GTNP before heading back to Bozeman for our 3 PM return flight .

We'll be accompanied by a toddler. Should i consider carrying a snowsuit or layered cloths should be fine? Are the park's paths suitable for strollers, or should we leave ours behind? Any suggestions to improve our itinerary based on your experience would be greatly appreciated.

May 24: Arrival day: No to in between lodging. With that late an arrival, just stay in Bozeman or Belgrade (where the airport actual is)

May 26: I'd do the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone today, and down thru Hayden Valley to Fishing Bridge. There are some good picnic areas on the way in case the 2-year old needs to get out and run a little. The trails at Canyon - some you can use a stroller on, others no and you need to have your hand on the toddler at all times on those steeper trails. Do you have a toddler backpack?

May 27: IF you are going to do Grand Tetons you should do it today.

May 28: You could do Mammoth and Lamar /Upper Loop today. You might consider staying tonight in Gardiner if you can change hotels this night

May 29: I think on your plan you left out the 28th. You could not do Grand Tetons and still get back to the Bozeman airport for a 3PM flight out the same day. IF you are leaving at 3P if last night was in West Yellowstone you'd want to be on the road to Bozeman by 11. You could do the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center this morning if you wanted to let the kiddo see some wildlife that is easier to view.

yellowstone and grand teton national park tours

Overnight in Bozeman or Belgrade. The airport is between the two towns, but is closer to Belgrade which is the town you will turn at to get onto Hwy 191 to get to West Yellowstone. It is about a 2 hour drive from the Bozeman airport to West Yellowstone. The only place where there will be lodging between the two areas is at Big Sky which is about half way. That said, I highly recommend NOT driving any part of that highway in the dark as you run a risk of not seeing wildlife on/crossing the road in the middle of the night until it's too late. Get a good nights rest after your flight and enjoy the beautiful drive in the morning when it is light out.

===On the 29th, we'll dedicate the day to GTNP before heading back to Bozeman for our 3 PM return flight .===

If you're flying out of Bozeman at 3 pm on May 29th, there is no way you can sightseeing Grand Teton Park and drive back to Bozeman in time for your flight . If you drive outside the parks (via Teton Pass, Idaho, West Yellowstone, Hwy 191) it is a 4.5 hour drive.

With such a short amount of days, consider doing something like the following:

May 24- Fly into Bozeman at 10 pm. *Overnight Bozeman or Belgrade

May 25- *Overnight Old Faithful (3 lodging options) or West Yellowstone

May 26- *Overnight Same

May 27- *Overnight Grand Teton Park or in the town of Jackson

May 28- *Overnight Canyon Lodge, Mammoth, or Gardiner (north entrance)

May 29- Fly out of Bozeman at 3 pm

If you don't want to take a day away from Yellowstone Pak for Grand Teton Park, stay the the night of the 27th in the same place as the 28th. Grand Teton Park is spectacular and worth visiting, so if you do that, you can make plans to visit Grand Teton Park in 2025, focusing your entire time there.

For lodging inside Yellowstone Park, Xanterra is the official concessionaire. Staying inside the park with a toddler will help lessen the amount of time your toddler will have to be in the car and allow you to go back to your lodging quicker if needed.

===We'll be accompanied by a toddler. Should i consider carrying a snowsuit or layered cloths should be fine? Are the park's paths suitable for strollers, or should we leave ours behind? Any suggestions to improve our itinerary based on your experience would be greatly appreciated.===

It can get still get cold in Yellowstone the end of May. If your toddler has a snowsuit, bring it. If not, have lots of layers that can be taken off or added depending on current conditions when you're out and about exploring.

The park is not stroller friendly. They will be ok on the paved pathways, but you can't take them on dirt pathways. There are also boardwalks that have steps which are not stroller friendly. If you have a child backpack, it will work a lot better.

Edited to add: I see that Pam posted while I was being a slowpoke typing my reply. 🙂

Hahah...well we are sharing the same brain so that is good!

Excellent! It's understandable because once you've looked at your itinerary a jillion times it starts to run together in your head!

We'd love a report on how things go with the little one. We've not had a trip report with a toddler in a while.

Spring slowly arriving at grand teton national park.

Share

Winter is slowly releasing its grip on Grand Teton National Park's front country/NPS file

While snow continues to periodically fall on the Tetons, Grand Teton National Park  in Wyoming has opened the Teton Park Road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge to activities such as walking, biking and skating.

Visitors are now invited to recreate on approximately 14 miles of the road heading north from the Taggart Lake parking lot to Signal Mountain Lodge. For safety reasons, visitors are reminded to avoid going beyond any barricades marking closures as plowing activities on adjacent roads continue.

Park staff urges you to use caution, as snow and ice may persist on some sections of the road creating slick conditions. Visitors should also be alert for park vehicles and heavy equipment that travel this road as spring opening operations continue.

On nice days in April, the Teton Park Road can be busy with visitors. Use caution as you drive in this area, as children, pedestrians, cyclists, and other users share the section of the road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Cottonwood Picnic Area with vehicles. To avoid riding in traffic with your group, use the 10-minute loading and unloading zone at Cottonwood, located just north of the Taggart parking lot.  Visitors enjoying the Teton Park Road, should consider:

  • Entrance fees are required to enter Grand Teton National Park. Fees and passes can be paid at the Moose and Moran entrance stations, or through  Recreation.gov . For park fee information, visit  go.nps.gov/tetonfees .
  • Be watchful and cautious of wildlife, as it is common for animals to use park roads.
  • Carry bear spray, have it readily accessible and know how to use it.
  • Drivers should slow down and use caution in parking areas.
  • Be thoughtful of how music may affect others. Operating an audio device, such as a stereo, Bluetooth speaker, radio, or musical instrument in a manner which is unreasonable and impacts park users is prohibited by law.
  • Food and water are not available at the trailhead or along the road.
  • Restroom facilities are available at Taggart Lake Trailhead, Cottonwood Picnic Area, and at Signal Mountain Lodge. Portable restrooms are also located along Teton Park Road.
  • Leave No Trace  and dispose of trash in receptacles located at both ends of the road.
  • Dogs are permitted on the Teton Park Road on a leash no longer than six feet. Pet owners are required to clean up after their dogs. Waste disposal bag stations are located at both ends of the road. Bags should be deposited in trash receptacles and not left along the road.

The paved multi-use pathway in the park will open whenever it is predominately free of snow and ice. The pathway is closed from dusk to dawn for wildlife and public safety. Pets are not permitted on the pathway.   For information on park roads, visit  go.nps.gov/tetonroads . The Moose-Wilson Road between the Granite Canyon Trailhead parking lot and the turn off to Death Canyon is closed to vehicles until it melts free of snow.

The public is also invited to join park rangers on early-morning tours to observe strutting sage grouse perform their annual mating dance near Mormon Row. Grouse strut programs are a unique opportunity to witness greater sage grouse congregate where the males perform animated mating displays during the spring breeding season. As part of the ritualistic strut, in open areas called “leks,” males use their tail feathers and expandable air sacs under their throats to compete with other males for an optimum position on the lek and to gain the attention of females.

During grouse-strut programs, rangers will provide information about sage grouse and conservation efforts underway for populations that are declining throughout much of the American West. Programs will be offered free of charge, by reservation only, Saturday, April 20, Sunday, April 21, Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. Participants will meet at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose at 5:30 a.m. Participants should bring cameras, binoculars, water, warm layers, and comfortable walking shoes. To reserve your spot and for more information, please call 307-739-3399 (Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. MT).

The Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose will open for the season on May 1. It will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For all other opening and closing dates for facilities and services within the park, please visit  go.nps.gov/tetonseasons .

Moose In Grand Teton National Park Falls In Love With Big Bull… Statue

yellowstone and grand teton national park tours

Love at first statue.

They say that sometimes when you fall antlers over hooves in love, you just know. Love has a funny way of working out like that, though love also has a great way of telling you that maybe things aren’t going to work out.

There were a lot of mixed signals flying around in Grand Teton National Park on the fateful day this video was shot. To be straight forward, you could tell that the female moose was really interested, whereas the male moose was… one might say statuesque.

But that was for good reason, since it actually was a statue of a moose. The fact that it was a lifelike size made for quite the confusing interaction between the wild animal and the lifeless structure.

The footage was posted on “Tourons of Yellowstone,” which is usually dedicated to clips of stupid Yellowstone National Park tourists doing stupid things. I wouldn’t say this moose was doing anything unintelligently. It was just a little rattled, and probably had never seen a statue.

Props to the person who posted the video for overlaying “Just The Two of Us” by Grover Washington Jr. Technically, there’s not two of them, but try telling the female moose that:

“Two moose lost in love in Moose, WY. This bull was a little nervous and didn’t make a move, but that didn’t stop her. Obviously the sparks were flying.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TouronsOfYellowstone (@touronsofyellowstone)

And guess what? That happened in Moose, Wyoming. That’s an actual place, believe it or not. I can’t think of a better place for a mixup like this to happen.

Here’s to hoping that the cow elk eventually found an actual, non-statue partner. She clearly was interested in a romance, but the bull elk wasn’t exactly cooperating. Because it wasn’t actually a bull elk, just to be clear…
