The Dandy Warhols are an alternative rock band hailing from Portland, Oregon, USA who formed in 1994. The band are as well known for hits like “Bohemian Like You” and “We Used To Be Friends” as they are for their appearance in the controversial rock documentary “Dig!”.

The Dandy Warhols’ continued existence must be a heartening one to see for any band, since they show that one hit can essentially set a band for life commercially and creatively. With “Bohemian Like You”, the Warhols found a devoted fanbase that can keep them thriving without ever needing to compromise their artistic vision. Which, I think you’ll agree, is not bad considering that the Warhols are formed for no loftier reason than because the band members “needed music to drink to”.

The band was formed by lead singer and rhythm guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and lead guitarist Peter Holmström. After hiring Eric Hedford as their drummer, the band experimented with a number of different bassists, including Taylor-Taylor’s girlfriend, and none of them worked out. The band were at a loss for what to do until Taylor-Taylor saw Zia McCabe working in a Coffee Shop. He immediately asked if she was musical, and when she replied that she had a background in dance and performing arts, Taylor-Taylor took that to be good enough and put her on keyboards.

McCabe took to the instrument like a duck to water and the band immediately began gigging around the bars and clubs of Portland. At their very first gig they were spotted by Tim/Kerr Records, who offered to finance the recording of a full length album. The band eagerly accepted this and by 1995, their debut album “Dandy’s Rule OK” was released, which was enough of a hit under and overground that they were able to catch the attention of Capitol Records, who signed them to release their second attempt at a follow up, 1997’s “…The Dandy Warhols Come Down”.

Their first attempt at their sophomore record was canned by Capitol for “not having any hits”, clearly the band took that to heart as “…Come Down” had three songs that entered the UK Top 40 and saw them poised to become the world’s newest rock superstars before The Strokes had even thought of ripping off Tom Petty’s “American Girl”. Nothing could stop them, not even the departure of Hedford in 1998 over a dispute about royalties, as Taylor-Taylor’s recruited his cousin Brent DeBoer to fill in for him, a role which he still has to this day.

2000 was the year that their momentum capitalised. Their album “Thirteen Tales Of Urban Bohemia” was released and suddenly they became the hottest new band on the planet. “Bohemian Like You” went to number 5 in the UK on the back of a Vodaphone ad campaign. They played a set at Glastonbury Festival which the actual David frickin’ Bowie watched and became an avid fan afterwards. The band were later personally asked by The Dame to support him on his 2003 world tour and their follow up album “Tales From The Monkey House” was produced by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes.

Ever since then, the band have become cult icons in their own right. Known and loved for their spectacular live shows and idiosyncratic, sometimes hilarious lyricism (“I Never Thought You’d Be A Junkie / Because Heroin Is So Passé, indeed). The casual observer might write them off as a bunch of one-hit wonders but they are so much more than that, and they come highly recommended because of it.

Live reviews

I grew up in the 90's. It was a great time for music. Sadly, many of my favorite bands from that era are no longer around. Lucky for me, The Dandy Warhols do not fall into that category. I have never seen them perform. The closest I got was seeing them perform live on TV. When I learned they were coming to my city, I was very excited. I was able to get a few tickets for me and some friends. This is not the type of show you want to experience alone.

The venue was rather small. I guess you would call it an intimate setting. It was still nice though. When I walked to my seat, I had noticed the band was already set up and ready. They started playing within minutes of me finding my seat. I didn't have time to catch my breath. Their show was intense. They played a lot of their earlier songs. They sounded amazing live. Towards the end of the show, they played some new music. I really liked the new songs. I wasn't able to sing along with the crowd though. I tried to fake it though. It was such a fun show. I hope they come back soon.

Report as inappropriate

Portland rockers The Dandy Warhols do not only have one of the best names on the circuit, but also one of the best live shows. Their fanbase holds them in such high acclaim and are constantly recommending you go and see them live to new converts. Therefore the quartet finds themselves playing on larger stages to consistently growing crowds although they manage to maintain a really personable atmosphere within their venue.

They continue to be very laid back onstage and have a really warm manner when chatting to the crowds, telling them stories about their formation and the way songs came about. Hand selecting the very best music from across their discography, each musician demonstrates his respective abilities and the audience goes wild during the conclusion of every single track. The largest reaction of the evening is reserved for an extended version of 'Godless' from the third LP 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' which really proves them to be a driving force in rock.

This was the first time I've seen the Dandy Warhols live. Since it's pretty common for bands to have a different vibe in person, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoy their music, so I was sure I'd enjoy their performance. Before the show started, I met a very pleasant young lady who was seeing them for the sixth time. She described Dandy Warhols' live shows as being a "spiritual experience". In the moment, I mostly wrote off her praise as overly gushing fanspeak, but then the show started and I found out that she was right. This was easily the best music I've ever heard at a concert. The Dandy Warhols are easily 10 times better live, then they are on a recording. If you're a fan of their music, do whatever you have to in order to see them live. You absolutely won't regret it. I will definitely go see them again. And yes, it was, in a very real way, a spiritual experience.

If you've seen DIG! you'll know what to expect, if you haven't seen it, rent/borrow/download and sit back for a terrific insight into The Dandy Warhols back story. Live - they're polished, tight and loads of fun. The Dandy's seem to really enjoy being on tour, and the crowd (on 5th July) were over-joyed to have them. The venue was a great size (about 1k capacity) and the line of sight to the stage from the bar on the left hand side was pretty good. The quality of the sound was stellar and there was a roof raising cameo from a flute player who used to play with Adam and the Ants. The set list had lots of classics - including Last High, Bohemian Like You and Godless.

Really recommend seeing The Dandy Warhols live - a good time guaranteed.

The sound levels was a bit off during the beginning of the concert. Which is really annoying. But once that changed the concert was a blast. I loved how Zia was really happy when a fan put up this sign: https://www.instagram.com/p/BtHm7iihhKo/?igshid=4faq8ee102kj

I really enjoyed all the songs and it reminded me to listen to some earlier records again. They celebrated their 25 year of doing LIVE concerts and I got reminded about how old I am.

In some the new songs you can hear their familiar sound of the records released in the Nineties.

The Dandy Warhols played a great set, in a wonderful, cozy location in Maastricht, Netherlands.

There was little discussion and lots of music in the set, with an almost non-stop groove from beginning to end.

The crowd was engaged and appeared to enjoy the music, being more involved with the more famous tracts than the less, as is typical.

Kudos for them to come to a small venue and share their talent and music with the same energy that they've demonstrated in much larger venues.

All in all, a great concert and a great experience!

Ribonig’s profile image

Always been a fan of them but had never seen them live. We were on holiday in Prague the weekend they were playing so it seemed like a good time to finally catch them.

The venue is lovely, great bar, natural split between crowd and the bar so easy to slip out for a drink. The stage is huge with a round bit sticking out that really digs into the audience, especially as the Dandy's didn't use this blank space.

They've still got it, a couple of crowd pleaser and a set of interesting sounds, the gig flew by. Great night.

terrysaunders’s profile image

The gig was excellent, it was exactly what you would expect from the Dandy Warhols. Great songs and mood...

On the down side once again the Belgian Concert goers where disappointing, there was no energy and this had nothing to do with the Dandy Warhols, the Belgian crowd never moves, dances or sings... They just clap and whistle in the end of every song. I really don't get them... The most de-motivating thing in the Belgian live scene is the crowd that usually attends. Weird hehhhh....

Karavasileiadis’s profile image

Excellent show. Fantastic arrangements and acoustics. Even the first intro bands were very good. If you can see them, do so. It is an experience of a lifetime. I didn’t stay for the after party but they did mention it. Every song was great but you can only do so many sets. This is a very prolific band so it must be difficult to select what songs to play since they have so many good ones . I bought the tickets as soon as they went on sale months ago and it was well worth the wait.

Things to do | regional concert previews of bratty, cold war kids, dandy warhols, more [seven in seven].

dandy warhols tour schedule

Welcome to Seven in Seven, where we look at shows coming to the region over the next week. As always, whether your musical tastes are rock ’n’ roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to check out.

Here are seven of the best on the docket for the week of March 1:

Porno for Pyros — Saturday at Parx Casino

Formed out of the breakup of Jane’s Addiction in 1992, and led by former Jane’s members Perry Farrell and Stephen Perkins, Porno for Pyros were never really overshadowed by such a lofty predecessor, instead alternating between being a curiosity and an obsession for some music fans. The alt-rock outfit recently revealed dates for a North American tour that would end their 26-year touring hiatus and would also be the last. The trick is you’ll have to head out to Bensalem as the group are playing Parx Casino.

JP Saxe — Saturday at Brooklyn Bowl

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter JP Saxe comes to Brooklyn Bowl as part of a 50-plus date tour in support of his sophomore album, “A Grey Area.” In addition to the headline shows, he’s also promoting a brand new acoustic album, which features new arrangements of fan-favorite tracks from the new album and an all-star cast of special guests, including Cory Henry, Tal Wilkenfeld, Ryan Lerman and more. “A Grey Area (Live Sessions)” is on all streaming platforms now … or you could just go see Saxe live for yourself.

Bratty — Sunday at PhilaMOCA

Mexican singer-songwriter Bratty is riding high on late last year’s album release of “TRES,” a key example of her evolution of the unguarded storytelling that’s made her one of the most compelling young artists to emerge in recent years. The 23-year-old Mexico native sets her introspection to a bright and dreamy meld of indie-pop and surf-rock, lit up in her disarming vocal work and lively melodies. Live, it’ll be something to witness Bratty’s power in absolute sensitivity.

Cold War Kids — Sunday at The Fillmore

Nathan Willett took a rare pandemic-era breather to really contemplate what a Cold War Kids album could, and should, sound like in the present day, and how to infuse the material with meaningful discourse about his life specifically and the state of the world more broadly. Clearly, it was worth the wait: The aptly self-titled result may very well be the strongest and most well-rounded full-length in the long-running California band’s ample catalog. It’s also one LP the guys are dying to road-test live.

Alkaline Trio — Wednesday, March 6, at The Fillmore

The agonizing wait for a new Alkaline Trio album finally ended with the January release of “Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs,” the band’s 10th studio effort and first LP in six years. The pop punk act was a bit stymied as co-lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba found his workload increased as he pulled similar duty for a handful of years in Blink-182. Now’s he back to being all in with Alkaline Trio, alongside bassist/singer Dan Andriano and drummer Atom Willard.

Provoker — Wednesday, March 6, at Johnny Brenda’s

Los Angeles-based post-punk band Provoker comes to town in support of its recent sophomore album, “Demon Compass.” This new tour follows the band’s recent run of shows supporting Beach Fossils for a half-dozen stops in the U.S. during their “Bunny” record release tour. Crafted under the influence of a city where daily events flirt with myths, legends and curses, “Demon Compass” channels rich darkness to tell a story of desire, loss and confrontation. It saw the group shifting their focus from projecting familiar, shadowy figures to embodying them, as on their debut, this time around accessing the dregs of their internal world and confronting the demons that lurk even deeper.

The Dandy Warhols — Wednesday, March 6, at Ardmore Music Hall

Influential ’90s indie-psych-rockers The Dandy Warhols aren’t simply “still at it” with their 12th LP, “Rockmaker,” they’re absolutely killing it. The record officially drops March 15, but the singles for it are stunners, with “Danzig With Myself” featuring Pixies frontman Frank Black and “I’d Like To Help You With Your Problem” aided by guitar courtesy of Guns N’ Roses’ Slash. The rest of the record promises to be a barnburner with the Dandys maintaining their classic psych rock roots but diving into even a grittier edge that borders on post-punk and even goth, which might have something to do with frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor drawing inspiration from The Damned, MC5 and The Stooges.

• Porno for Pyros: “Kimberly Austin”

• JP Saxe: “I Don’t Miss You”

• Bratty: “Radio”

• Cold War Kids: “Run Away With Me”

• Alkaline Trio: “Break”

• Provoker: “It’s in My Head”

• The Dandy Warhols: “Danzig With Myself”

The Dandy Warhols on once being named David Bowie’s favourite band

The band recalled the moment during a new discussion with NME

Courtney Taylor-Taylor of The Dandy Warhols and David Bowie

The Dandy Warhols have reflected on what it was like to be named as one of David Bowie ’s favourite bands.

  • READ MORE: The Dandy Warhols: “‘Dig!’ was a huge turning point. It was brutal for us”

The moment arose during a new discussion with the group’s frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor, when he sat down for the latest instalment of NME ’s Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! series .

During the conversation, the singer-songwriter was quizzed about the band’s history, and opened up topics including his time on the road, Dig! documentary with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and his 2009 graphic novel One Model Nation .

At one point in the interview, Taylor-Taylor was asked if he could recall which two bands The Dandy Warhols played between during the 2000 edition of Glastonbury .

“ Bush went on before us, then I have no idea because when I started walking offstage, David Bowie and his band – who had been watching us at the side – came towards us like a wave of black Gucci jackets and teeth,” he answered.

The correct answer turned out to be Saint Etienne and Muse , however, the conversation did lead to the singer recalling his working relationship with David Bowie – in particular, being named as one of the artist’s favourite bands.

“I have no idea what happened that day. Hours are gone from my memory. We were invited to watch David Bowie’s headline set at the side of the stage,” he explained.

Courtney Taylor-Taylor of The Dandy Warhols perform at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on September 16, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia.

“Zia [McCabe, Dandy Warhols’ keyboardist/bassist] started blowing bubbles over David’s stage, and somebody launched into a flaming bitch-fest at her: ‘WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?! THIS IS GOING LIVE ON TV TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE!’. Zia put them away, then after the next song, that person frantically came up to us and went: ‘DAVID LOVES THE BUBBLES! WE NEED MORE BUBBLES!’.”

“Whenever David was in New York, he would come to our shows and he and Philip Glass owned a studio in Midtown that he’d let us use for free – that’s where we did our fourth album ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’, and we worked together with him on that. Above the telephone line, if you pulled one of Philip Glass’ platinum records to one side, the number of the Beastie Boys ’ pot dealer was there – David caught us calling him one day and thought that was so cool,” he added.

“We toured extensively with him and it was fun being friends with. He was like a wizard, but was reluctant to give advice. When we found out we were David Bowie’s favourite band, it was like god came down to me and said: ‘Courtney, I meant to tell you, you were right the whole time. All that shit you went through in high school – they were wrong and you were right’.

He concluded, saying: “Bowie was also great at pool. I remember him once walking into a bar with me and my friends, racking up the balls. He ran the pool table while we stood with our mouths agape!”

The two worked together after Glastonbury too, when The Dandy Warhols joined Bowie as support during his ‘A Reality Tour’, and also as one of the special guests when the ‘Lets Dance’ singer invited them to his curation of Meltdown in 2002.

David Bowie (1947-2016) performs live on stage during the first night of his Serious Moonlight World Tour at the Vorst Forest Nationaal in Brussels, Belgium on 18th May 1983.

Taylor-Taylor also spoke about his relationship with Bowie back in 2020, when he took part in an interview with Sungenre . “With David… I just never knew really what he was talking about. He would be trying to make kind of jokes,” he recalled. “It’s like a weird uncle when you’re 12 and your uncle is trying to relate to you and you just kind of want them to go away because you don’t understand what they’re talking about. That is to be 100 per cent honest what it felt like hanging out with David Bowie for me.”

Back in 2016, he also told OPB about the time they shared a stage with the rock icon.

“We walked out and the crowd went, ‘Haaa.’ [Bowie] said, ‘The only other time in my career I’ve allowed another band to come on my stage was 30 years ago…and that person was Lou Reed.’ And everyone goes, ‘Haaa,’ even louder.

“He said, ‘A month ago, when I asked Courtney what song he wanted to do, he chose the same song I chose 30 years ago with Lou Reed. Ladies and gentlemen, ‘White Light, White Heat.’’ Everyone went bananas.”

The Dandy Warhols’ new album ‘Rockmaker’ is released via Sunset Blvd. on March 15.
