Love this! Blanket scarves and turkish towels can be used in similar ways – use them as scarves, blankets and even a pillow or lumbar support in a pinch. The turkish towel can obviously be used as a towel as well. Very versatile and help keep packing to a minimum!

These soft, oversized pieces of fabric can be worn as scarves, wrapped around your shoulders, worn as a headscarf or unfurled into a small lap blanket for full body warmth. Stylish and ingenious!

What to Look for in a Travel Wrap

Travel wraps are essentially extra-large scarves, and size is one of the greatest considerations you'll have when choosing a travel wrap. A good size is about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide, so it can stretch over most of your body.

You'll also want to pay attention to material. There are several fabrics that will be both cozy and warm without feeling too bulky, making them ideal for travel wraps. We've outlined a few of the most popular options below.

• Cashmere: Derived from Kashmir goats , these soft fibers are washed and then spun into yarn to create plush wraps. Loved for its soft warmth, ability to wick moisture and breathability, cashmere is guaranteed to keep you cozy on a long travel day. It does require a higher upkeep, however, as it's recommended to be dry cleaned or hand-washed due to its fine nature. We also suggest looking for manufacturers who practice more animal-friendly shearing techniques .
• Wool: Made primarily from sheep's fur , wool is known to be some of the warmest fabric around. (Read: When that airplane air conditioner hits, a wool wrap will keep you nice and toasty.) It's hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitivities, and it's mildew- and mold-resistant (wool can reportedly soak up to as much as 30 percent of its weight in water), meaning even if you spill a bit of liquid on it, it won't get super gross in your suitcase. You shouldn't put your wool in the dryer to avoid shrinking.
• Polyester: A synthetic fiber made from a type of plastic , this ultra-durable material is moisture-wicking and ultra weather-resistant. It's also highly wrinkle-resistant, so it won't look like junk no matter how badly you smush it up under you in the back of the car.
• Acrylic : Acrylic is a synthetic alternative to wool that is just as snuggly and dependable. It's highly resistant to UV fading, which means the dye will stay vibrant for longer, though it's not the most eco-friendly option around. Acrylic fibers also tend to stretch with heat, so never wash your scarf in hot water.
• Cotton: Classic and easy, cotton is a staple for its durability, breathability and light breeziness. It's also another great option if you have allergies to any other fabrics.
• Silk: If you want to add a but of luxe to your ensemble, silk is not only beautiful, but is a natural protein fiber obtained from the mulberry silkworm that's extremely strong and helps to regulate your temperature. It's lightweight, breathable and dries quickly, and it will feel nice against your skin, which can improve relaxation and sleep for some—perfect for any long journey ahead.
• Microfiber : Made from synthetic fibers , such as polyamide (a nylon byproduct) and polyester, this elastic fabric will be super soft, since it has very small thread diameters. Beyond that, it's long-lasting and super lightweight, which is ideal if you're strictly a carry-on only person. The one downside? These fibers easily attract dirt and grime like a magnet.

We nearly always travel with at least one travel wrap as they have so many uses. Over the years we have put together quite a collection of travel wraps made of various materials and in different styles.

We love the versatility of a travel wrap. They can keep you warm on a chilly airplane or be used as a travel blanket on a long bus ride. It can cover your shoulders when entering churches, dress up a plain outfit for an evening out, and add an extra layer of warmth as you watch the sunset from a beach.

I purchased my first travel wrap several years ago now, and it is pictured in many of the photos in this guide. It is from Secret Sweater, a former California based company. Sadly, this product is no longer available but it was with this product that I realized how useful a travel wrap could be as a travel accessory.

I found a travel shawl to be a great thing to have at the airport waiting in lines and sitting around. I t’s also useful in the airplane as I am often cold and not all flights provide blankets.

Laurence loves to shoot photos at sunset which generally means I sit outside with him during some chilly evenings a travel shawl has been fabulous for these situations. For example, some of the photos in this post were taken at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, California.

A travel wrap is also great for indoor locations like cold offices and air-conditioned museums. It is also very handy when going into religious sites in the summer and needing to be sure to have shoulders and arms covered.

Another one of the nice things about a travel wrap is how stylish it looks compared to just throwing on a sweatshirt or old cardigan. So I’d definitely recommend one as a travel accessory for women!

Travel wraps can be a wonderful travel accessory but they are not all the same. So here are 9 things to consider before purchasing a travel wrap or travel shawl.

Versatility

The thing I love the most about travel wraps is their versatility. They can be worn in a number of ways and can often top a number of different outfits from casual to more dressy.

When choosing a travel wrap, consider how you would be able to wear it. Many travel wraps you can wear as a scarf, shrug, or shawl. Some you can also use as a travel blanket to keep you warm on plane and bus rides. Or as a sarong, headscarf, or sari

Perhaps you want to be able to pin it around your shoulders to wear like a poncho. If you like to wear scarfs and wraps poncho style, then you might want to wear it with shawl pins or shawl buckle clasp . Although if you are looking for a true poncho, you might consider something like this Caroline Grace poncho instead of a travel wrap.

Think about what you want to use a travel wrap for most and if each product can be used in that manner. Items that come with sleeves, pockets, or armholes are generally going to have less versatility.

Note that a travel shawl may replace a sweater or cardigan but it is not intended to take the place of an actual coat, and they often won’t fit well under or on top of a coat or jacket unless you can wear it as a scarf. Travel wraps are also not great if you plan to be very active as they tend to slip off unless you get one with sleeves.

Size / Dimensions of the Travel Wrap

In relation to the versatility above, be sure to consider the size and dimensions of the travel wrap. Many people buy wraps without fully understanding the size. I recommend comparing the stated wrap dimensions to the dimensions of a scarf, wrap, or blanket you already own so you have a good idea of its size and how it might hang on you before you buy it.

For example, if you want to be able to use a travel wrap as a travel blanket, you’ll probably want something at least 60 inches (5 feet or 152 cm) in length or longer and fairly wide. Otherwise it is unlikely to cover you completely.

But on the other hand, if you want to be able to use it as a scarf, you don’t want something too bulky and will want to look for something with slimmer dimensions. If you think you’d prefer a travel scarf rather than a travel wrap, you can check out our travel scarves guide .

If you are someone who packs light, you may also want to pay attention to the size of the wrap when folded and its weight.

Design of the Travel Wrap

Most travel wraps are essentially wide scarves with no structure or armholes. Most are simply rectangular pieces of fabric. However, a number of them have been cut or tapered to fit in a certain way such as being cut to fit around the neck.

Some also have armholes or sleeves and a few have pockets. Some also have decorative elements such as tassels, embroidery, and sequins. The cut and design of the wrap may affect its fit and versatility.

Travel Wrap Fabric

The material of the travel wrap is important to take into account. As the fabric will often determine the price, durability, and washability of the garment. It is also important to note that some fabrics wrinkle more easily than others and some wick away or resist moisture better than others.

Here are seven common fabrics that may be used to make travel wraps:

• Acrylic – This is a material made of synthetic polymer fibers. It is generally soft, warm, wrinkle-resistant, and durable. It is often made to feel like wool. It is inexpensive and may be mixed with natural materials. Materials made from acrylic fibers can often be machine washed.
• Cotton – A natural fiber that is the most widely used natural fiber in the manufacturing of clothing in the world. It is durable, inexpensive, and soft, although it tends to lose its softness over time and thinner cotton fabrics can wrinkle rather easily. Because of its tendency to wrinkle and that it absorbs and holds moisture, it is not an ideal fabric for a travel wrap unless it is blended with another material or fairly thick. Usually machine washable.
• Rayon / Viscose – Rayon is made of a semi-synthetic manufactured fiber produced from regenerated cellulose fiber (generally wood pulp). It often mimics the feel and texture of fabrics like silk or wool. It wicks away moisture better than cotton but may wrinkle easily (depends on the type of rayon). Rayon travel wraps are normally priced at the mid-point. Rayon is produced in different ways and sold under different names such as viscose, lyocell, Modal, Tencel, and MicroModal. Usually machine washable.
• Wool – Wool is a natural fiber made from the wool of sheep (and sometimes other animals). It is warm, durable, and wicks moisture well. It can wrinkle but is more wrinkle-resistant (especially if a thicker wool) than cotton, silk, rayon, and linen. Pricing is generally at the mid-point but depends on the type of wool as finer wools will fall at premium price points. Some people may find coarser wool products itchy or irritating. Types of wool are sometimes labeled by the type of wool used such as merino, cashmere, or pashmina. Usually hand wash only.
• Cashmere – Cashmere is a fine and delicate type of wool. This is generally the most expensive type of material used to produce travel wraps. One of the most expensive types of cashmere is pashmina. Needs to be handled more delicately than most other fabrics as can snag or tear easily. Hand wash only.
• Silk – Silk is a natural protein fiber and is well-known as a soft and luxurious fabric. Can hold bright colors and feels smooth on the skin. However, it can stain easily and can stretch and shrink when wet. Not the most practical fabric for a travel wrap; however, you may see travel wraps with silk blends such as a blend of wool and silk. Usually dry clean only.
• Linen – Linen is another natural fabric made from the fibers of the flax plant. Linen is a great and tough fabric. While we love linen in general, it tends to wrinkle very easily from daily wear. If you don’t mind wrinkles, linen makes a great travel fabric, especially for traveling in hot climates. But we tend not to recommend it for travel wraps because of its tendency to be wrinkly.

In general, we would recommend looking for travel wraps made of wool, acrylic, or rayon as they tend to be more practical fabrics for travel wraps than others. Some rayon or viscose fabrics wrinkle easily whereas others are fairly wrinkle resistant so be sure to read reviews. Cotton can also work if it is blended or a thicker knit (to help prevent wrinkling), but not recommended for wet or tropical destinations.

Note that pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool (rare and expensive), but the vast majority of products labeled as pashmina are not made of actual pashmina. The term is loosely used to describe any scarf or wrap.

Travel wraps fall in a number of price points, from budget to premium. Travel wraps can range from about USD $15 to over USD $500, with most falling in the $40 to $200 range. More expensive products are generally made of more premium materials like cashmere.

I have tried travel wraps in a very wide range of prices from the budget basic oversized scarfs to fine cashmere wraps, so there is something out there for any budget. In general, I think most people will find a suitable travel wrap that meets their needs in the $40 to $150 price range.

For cashmere, you’ll probably need to budget between $120 and $300, depending on size and quality.

Fabric Care & Washability

Be sure to read the cleaning care label on a travel wrap. Some materials like wool and cashmere are more delicate and usually need to be hand washed to prevent damage. Some items may be dry clean only.

If you plan to do laundry while traveling , you can easily hand wash items in the sink or tub as you go.

If you plan to only machine wash your clothes, you may want to look at acrylic, rayon, and cotton options which are more likely to be machine washable. However, even with these fabrics, companies may recommend hand washing over machine washing to lengthen the life of the wrap.

Country of Origin

Travel wraps are made in countries around the world with many being produced in China since it is cheap to manufacture textiles there. If you are concerned about quality control, sustainability, working conditions, or carbon footprint, you may want to pay attention to the country of origin and from where it is being shipped. Some companies can even provide details of their whole supply chain.

We try to note the country of origin for each wrap we recommend and have included wraps made in the United States , wraps made in Scotland , wraps made in Italy , and a wrap made in Ireland .

Be cautious about any products that do not list their country of origin on the tag. Many countries, such as the United States, require country of origin tags on clothing.

Also be wary of cheap products that are listed as coming from a country with a high cost of labor. For example, we spotted a travel wrap with a glued-on label stating it was made from 100% Scottish cashmere on Amazon that looked like it was neither cashmere nor made in Scotland. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Reliability of Reviews

We all like to read reviews before we buy an item. I find this very helpful to see what other people have thought, the pros/cons, and which body types it might fit best. Reviews can be very useful and most of them use them to guide our buying decisions.

However, fake reviews are an issue on many sites from Tripadvisor to Amazon. Note that if you are buying a product on Amazon (or similar site) and are concerned about the authenticity of the reviews, we recommend running the link through FakeSpot . It isn’t 100% reliable but it helps show patterns of deception.

Practicality

Practicality is perhaps the most important thing to think about when making a purchase of a travel wrap, or any other garment. This takes into account most of the other things we’ve already discussed.

Some questions to consider and ask yourself:

Will you actually wear it? Will you carry it around on your travels? How much space does it take up in your luggage? How versatile is it? Will you wear it at home? Does it go well with the travel clothing you already own? Do you mind if it gets wrinkly? How will you wash it?

Also remember to take a close look at the size dimensions of any wrap, shawl, or scarf before purchasing online. Make sure it is long and wide enough for what you plan to use it for during your travels.

York Scarves offers several generous-sized scarfs and wraps (labeled as pashminas) that can be worn as a shawl, cape, scarf, or poncho.

Most of the wraps (depending on material and style) measure either 78.5 inches X 27.5 inches (200 cm X 70 cm) or 70.5 inches X 27.5 inches (180 cm X 70 cm). Most designs have either short fringe or tassels along the edges. Lots of colors available.

There are a variety of materials used and they offer a selection of travel wraps made of 100% organic cotton (see those here ), 100% viscose/rayon (see those here ), or 100% wool (see those here ). Price points vary according to the material, ranging from about $20 to $55.

4. Coolibar Sun Protective Wraps

If sun protection and beach cover-up is a primary reason for getting a travel wrap, then Coolibar is a brand to consider. The brand specializes in lightweight clothing and accessories designed to protect your skin from sun damage.

Coolibar has several different wraps, shawls, and beach cover-ups which come in varying sizes and styles. Some have sleeves. The Sanibel Beach Shawl and Bhakti Sun Shawl are both 72 inches by 27 inches (182 cm X 68 cm) and the Railay Beach Sun Wrap (in size S/M) is 56.5 inches in length by 51.5 inches in width (143 cm X 130 cm). The HappyLuxe Wayfarer Travel Wrap is lightweight and versatile. It can be used as a travel scarf, wrap, blanket, or shawl.

The wrap is thin, lightweight, and packs away easily. Very handy for cold airplanes and chilly evenings outside.

The wrap also offers protection from the sun with an Ultraviolet Protective Factor (UPF) rating of 50+, meaning it blocks about 98% of UVA and UVB sun rays.

The wrap is 68 inches X 35 inches (172 cm X 89 cm). It is made in the United States of America of Tencel which is a fabric made from 95% MicroModal (a form of rayon) and 5% Spandex. Tencel is a plant-based textile and cellulose fiber that is made from beech trees.

It is machine washable (on the delicate cycle) or you can hand wash it. Available in several colors and two different textures. Both fabrics are soft, but the brushed (or “eco-cashmere”) fabric is softer than the regular fabric (“classic jersey”).

Although we feel this is a bit pricey for an acrylic garment, it is very well made and unlike most travel wraps, it is sewn specifically to be worn as a travel wrap or shawl. This helps make it fit and stay put a bit better than those that are completely rectangular or square.

The other great thing about this particular wrap is that is made with easy care in mind. It is both machine washable and can be dried in a tumble dryer. So if you are looking for something more hard-wearing that can be cleaned by machine, this is a good one to check out.

The travel wraps are available in a large number of colors. Most are solid colors, but they also offer a few multi-colored ones as well. Woven wraps feature fringes on the ends and the knitted wraps do not have fringes.

Great and informative review! I am looking for a travel wrap for gift for a friend who travels a lot (a birthday gift) and also one for myself and I have a couple of questions:

1. What do you think would be a good idea of a shawl or wrap for someone who is vegan and would also make a nice gift? Price max would be $100.

2. Separately I want one for myself and happy to consider any material but am also wanting to use it to protect myself from the sun and not really sure what to look for that would be best for that?

So for someone looking for a vegan friendly travel wrap or shawl, that does limit a lot of the options out there (all those with any wool, cashmere, silk, leather trimmings, etc.) but it also eliminates most of the more expensive options which tend to be made from cashmere. For a vegan travel wrap, you’ll want to look for those made of materials like cotton, rayon, acrylic, Tencel, polyester, linen, modal, etc.

The Happyluxe Wayfarer wrap is a classic and you can get it for about $48 currently so you could splurge on the eco-cashmere version (softer brushed fabric) for a bit more. You would even have a little money leftover to get something else – Happyluxe also has matching sleep masks and travel pillows if you think one of those would be a good gift. This one is made of Tencel fabric. You can check those out here .

Another good option is the Deshabelle Pointelle wrap which is made of cotton and modal. That one is currently around $75 and a great option as well, depending on her style. You can see it here .

Another nice one is the classic travel wraps by MerSea, which you can see here . I think these make a very nice gift but they are a bit above your price range, about $130 currently. But they are made from and come in a range of solid colors. They are made from 100% acrylic thread. MerSea has other vegan options as well but most are around the $150 or so range.

In terms of choosing a travel wrap with sun protection, any of the wraps listed will provide some sun protection. The ones with a tighter weave will provide the most, I would avoid the ones that are see-through or have looser weaves. If looking at items with UPF ratings and sun protection is important, you probably want at least a UPF of 30 and one with 50 means it protects you against 98% of UV rays. The best brand for this is to look at Coolibar (see recommended styles above) as all their clothing is designed to provide good protection from the sun and is all tested with a UPF rating. But other ones can also work, for instance I know Happyluxe had their Wayfarer wrap tested at a UPF 50 so that can be a good option too. Just note that since wraps tend to move around as you wear them, I would still be sure to wear sunscreen/hats etc to make sure you have optimal sun protection if spending time outdoors.

So happy to try to share my thoughts on this. So for cashmere, the two big concerns are how delicate it is and its cleaning. For cleaning, you will want to eitherhand wash or dry clean it; I would never recommend machine washing cashmere as it could ruin it.

Cashmere is great but it is not always a great fabric for travel. So I think it really depends on the type of travel you plan to do. I think cashmere can work great for certain kinds of city travel, local travel, cruises, certain road trips, etc. But probably not as great for trips focused on more outdoorsy pursuits like camping/hiking or safari where it may more easily get soiled. It is also probably not the best fit for backpackers or light packers. If you need to clean on the go, you can easily take some gentle detergent with you and just clean in a hotel sink or bathtub as needed (allowing plenty of time to air dry) or take it to a local dry cleaner.

But if you are looking for something that is easier to clean and you won’t need to worry about as much, I’d look at something that can be machine washed. Even if you don’t actually machine wash it (you decide to hand wash it) it means it is a tougher fabric and you always have that option to machine wash. So just a few of the options from our recommend travel wraps that you might consider would be most of the wraps offered by Mer & Sea (a few are cashmere or wool so check description), the Happyluxe Wayfarer wrap (the eco-cashmere ones in particular might be a good fit), and most (if not all) of the wraps and shawls by Barefoot Dreams.

Thank you for this very informative article. I have tried 3 of them: the Ovcio, the White and Warren and the Travelwrap Co. They are all nice but I do prefer the Travelwrap Company ones best. While I’m very gentle with all of them I find the Ovcio pills, but is most affordable, the White and Warren does not pill, but some of the random strands that shed are rather thick so I’m not sure of the grade of cashmere. It is the largest and also very cozy and hardy. The Travelwrap Company’s are beautiful with the widest array of colors, drape beautifully and the monogrammed personalization makes an incredible gift. They also have nicest storage bag and gift box. All are beautiful and a very welcomed addition to my closet!

I am wondering if you have seen/tried the new Ovcio featherweight scarf. I am thinking about getting one for a trip this fall. It seems compact yet provides needed warmth. Not sure how the featherweight version will look after use…wrinkled? Any thoughts?

Yes, I actually love the Ovcio featherlight scarf . I own two them actually, one blue one and one red one. I mention them in my travel scarves post but not this one as I don’t really think they work as well as full wraps, although they could be used as such.

But I think they are great for warmer weather travel. They are very big when unfolded and stretched out but the material is very gauzy and very thin and lightweight. I normally loop them two or three times around my neck. Its a very lovely scarf but you do need to be careful as it is delicate and can easily tear or snag (would recommend not wearing jewelry or accessories with it that could tear it). Comes with a handy storage bag, that is great for travel. Folds down really small so can be easily stowed in a purse, backpack, etc.

The material, like any thin cashmere or silk, does wrinkle (mostly from being folded up). But given the fabric and the way its worn as a scarf (many layers wrapped around), it doesn’t really matter and you can’t tell them much when on your neck. I think you’d notice the wrinkles if you wore it mostly as a wrap around your shoulders but as a scarf I don’t really notice them.

Hi Jessica, Having received both the Ovcio and Travelwrap Co. knitted (flexknit) travel wraps, I agree with your review and do find both lovely! The Ovcio is far more affordable for a US customer. Very easy returns. The TWC is far more expensive for a US purchaser and while the company pays duties, etc, you are charged sales tax. The Ovcio is $179.00 USD before any discounts and the TWC similar classic version is about $345.00 USD with just under $30.USD sales tax.

The TWC box and dust bag are far more luxurious, but for more than double the price, I would rather save some $ and have a nice box and dust bag vs a luxurious. The TWC is 9 inches wider, which I like, but the Ovcio fits me fine at 29 inches wide. Both are very soft, grade A cashmere, and while the TWC appears “fluffier” while folded, it also feels a bit thicker as you also noted with more prominent borders. Both are 2-ply. My husband and I both did blind touch tests on each single and folded for softness and both were the “winners” at times. I am keeping my Ovcios flexknits as with the price point and discount codes having more than one is very doable for me and I do like having summer/spring and fall/winter colors as well as them making nice xmas presents. Very fast communication and CS support.

I am in the process of returning the original TWC but did order a different colored TWC with my initial embroidered. I am curious to see the mélange effect of several shades and coming from the famed Johnstons of Elgin mill, I am looking forward to owning a piece of history. Also extremely fast turn around time and communication. The return process for a US customer is free, but does require more work than those doing domestic UK returns.

In closing, I adore both, with TWC you are ordering a piece of history and they are stunning. Ovcio is a 4-year-old company also making excellent products so I am happy to own theirs too and also support a US-based business.

And it sounds like you had very similar impressions to me in comparing the two. Price is definitely a big consideration for most people in making a choice.

Best of luck in returning the wrap and getting a new one that has been monogrammed. The customer service there (during office hours) is great based on my experience and the owner is very involved if you need any help. And yes, the shipping times and ease of return will depend on where you live.

The travel wraps from the TravelWrap Company that have the mélange effect with different shades of yarn are lovely. I have the Mizzle classic wrap (blend of light and medium blue shades) and I LOVE the color. Many of their wraps have this effect (I have my eye on the dark purple one). This is definitely something I have not seen in the less expensive wraps.

So glad you are enjoying the Fifth Origins cape, I love the colors on mine (Sunrise) as well! That one does wear and hang a bit differently than the more conventional travel wraps.

So there are a lot of differences obviously between the Ovcio wraps and the Happyluxe travel wrap in terms of material, size, dimensions, where they are manufactured, and care. Note that you’ll want to compare the dimensions if those are important to you. The Ovcio one is longer, but the Happyluxe is wider.

The Happyluxe one is going to be a lighter wrap that folds up smaller, taking up less room and is easier to care for as can be put into a washing machine on the delicate cycle if needed. It also will dry much more quickly than a cashmere wrap. If you want something that feels like cashmere, I’d recommend the brushed ones (listed as “Eco Cashmere”, made of Tencel). In terms of price, the Happyluxe are far less expensive.

But the Ovcio wrap is going to be a better choice if you are looking for something a little heavier and warmer and more luxurious (cashmere) but requires hand washing or dry cleaning to clean. The Ovcio wraps are going to be at the top end of your budget but you are paying for a cashmere. I personally like the woven wraps (the ones with fringes) over the knitted ones (Flexknit) for travel as I think they will stand up better to travel, packing, and cleaning.

Anyway, hope that helps in making your decision!

A tighter weave or knit is probably going to be warmer and perhaps harder wearing. The issue with a lot of handmade scarves and travel wraps is durability and washability, so choosing a yarn or fabric that is machine washable and hard-wearing can really help make it last longer and stay fresher.

Yes, that is indeed me in all those photos. I do have a lot of travel wraps, shawls, and scarves….haha, partially cause I love them and also because I have been reviewing them over the past few years for the blog.

The light blue wrap with the khaki dress in the photo is a classic cashmere wrap from the TravelWrap Company, specifically, it is this one . I really love this color, it is really lovely close up and works well with jeans or dressed up, especially nice from summer to autumn. The company has a pretty wide range of colors for its classic wraps.

The regular travel wraps from White & Warren and The TravelWrap Company are pretty similar in that they are both made of 100% cashmere, knitted, and approximately similar in terms of size, weight, and both have a number of color options. So I think both are great travel wraps if you are looking for a good quality cashmere wrap.

However, I’d personally recommend the classic wrap from the TravelWrap Company for a few reasons. The TravelWrap’s wraps are knitted in mills in Scotland versus those made for much less in China by White & Warren, so I think the premium price is more fair for those sold by The TravelWrap. The boxes and wrapping that come with the TravelWrap Company’s wraps are really nice, even if you don’t give them away. The customer service with the company is also excellent in my experience. The classic wraps are also currently lower in price than the White & Warren ones. So because of all these factors, I’d recommend the TravelWrap Company’s wraps over the White & Warren ones.

One other factor to consider may be shipping times and any handling/import costs. The White & Warren generally ship from the USA and the TravelWrap Company’s ship from the United Kingdom. So depending on where you are, if speed is important, you might want to check current shipping time estimates before ordering.

I am looking for a travel wrap and am not sure what to buy as I am doing it online. The brands I am considering are Naked Cashmere, White and Warren and the Travel Wrap Company. They all seem to use different description so it is hard to compare. I don’t want a heavy wrap, but I don’t want so light that it is see through. Any recommendations?

Hi Barbara,

Yes, it is frustrating that so many brands provide so little information about their travel wraps online. The numbers I’d compare since these are all knitted from pure cashmere are the overall dimensions, ply, gauge, and weight.

The White & Warren and Travel Wrap Company’s cashmere travel wraps, at least the two ones we feature, are both similar. They are similar in size dimensions, gauge (7 & 8), and ply (both 2 ply). Both are tighter knits so they won’t be see-through. They are also both of really good quality and sort of medium in terms of weight/thickness. So it may come down to the design, colors, and price.

I can’t say anything specific about the Naked Cashmere brand’s wraps or scarves as I have not personally tested them, but they also look similar to the other two, although the dimensions are a bit different. I didn’t see ply information listed for most of their products so I’d ask if you are considering one of them.

Most companies have good exchange and return policies, so I’d just be sure to check that before you purchase. Most will allow you to return the items for a full refund within 30 days if you are unhappy with the product.

Cashmere (and all wools) travel wraps are definitely best in cooler weather or for chilly morning/evenings. They are not well-suited for warmer or hot weather.

Sorry if this is a stupid man question. But can you tell me the difference between woven and knitted and the different plys in travelwraps? I see 2-ply, 3-ply etc. – do more ply mean it is thicker? Not a stupid question at all as I imagine many people don’t know the difference between woven and knit fabrics. I am no expert on fabrics but I will try to explain as best as I can. So knitted travel wraps are generally made from one long piece of yarn that has been knitted or looped over and over and you can see those loops in the fabric when you look closely. Whereas a woven travel wrap would be made from fabric where multiple pieces of yard or fibers are overlapping one another and interlocked. So if you look at it up close at woven fabric, it is a bit like a closely weaved basket I suppose. A typical example of typical knitted fabric would be an Irish wool sweater or baby blanket and an example of something woven is something made of linen or denim. For the mentioned cashmere travel wraps, we try to specify if they are woven or knitted. Knitted fabrics will have more stretch than woven ones.

For the plys, yes that is correct. It has to do with the number of threads or yarns twisted together and used in the garment. So yes, a 2-ply travel wrap is generally going to be thicker and more closely woven/knitted than a 1-ply travel wrap.

Yes, normally travel wraps don’t have sleeves or pockets, but they are definitely easier to keep on your shoulders when moving about!

The one pictured above is by Barefoot Dreams – it is the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Island Wrap. Currently, you can see the black version on Amazon here and other colors available here . From Amazon, it looks like they can ship internationally, but not to all countries. So you will have to check your specific country. If you try to order directly from Barefoot Dreams, they only ship within the continental United States.

If Amazon doesn’t work for you, I’d try doing an Internet search for the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Island Wrap and see if there are any online retailers that stock it that could ship it to your country.

There are also other sleeved travel wraps out there and I’d also check out travel cardigans. One such sleeved travel wrap is the Mer Sea & Co cashemere & wool sleeved wrap, which you can see here . That one is a bit of a different fit and a bit more expensive though.

Yes, if you are looking for something more lightweight and easier to squeeze into your backpack or luggage, then the Happyluxe is lighter and takes up less room to store. The Melifluous wrap is thicker and heavier. They differ in size dimensions as well, so that is something to note as well if that makes a difference to you. The Happyluxe is longer but the Melifluous is wider (more square). The Melifluous can be a bit larger for more petite women and the fabric also tends to wrinkle more.

Hello there – trying to choose a cashmere travel wrap. Would use for travel, but also want something I can wear as a shawl to special events at home plus maybe take into the office. Budget is a maximum of $250. Your recommendations are really helpful, sort of stuck between Ovcio one, TravelWrap Classic one, and White + Warren. Any thoughts between those 3 wraps?

The TravelWrap is just a bit above your budget (about $266 currently), but the White + Warren is about $50 above your budget, so I’d exclude that one. If your main concern is budget, the Ovcio one is the least expensive of the three (currently at $179 for most of their wraps).

Here are my general thoughts about the TravelWrap and Ovcio cashmere travel wraps:

The two cashmere wraps are similar in size. The Ovcio wraps is longer but the TravelWrap Classic is wider.

Both wraps use wool sourced from Mongolia. The Ovcio wraps are produced in China whereas the TravelWrap ones are produced in Scotland. The Ovcio wraps are woven whereas the TravelWrap ones are knitted.

Both are soft and feel pretty light. I would say the TravelWrap Classic wrap feels a bit softer. The TravelWrap is more delicate than the Ovcio but the Ovcio is more likely to wrinkle.

The Ovcio ones has fringed edges whereas the TravelWrap one has no fringe (there is a ribbed texture around the edges).

Both come with gift/storage boxes and storage pouch. The one from the TravelWrap Co is better quality than the one from Ovcio.

Overall, I would say that the TravelWrap one is of better quality, but given the price difference, you will need to decide if the price difference is worth it to you. I’d look at the upclose photos of the fabrics to better to see the difference between the two fabrics (knit versus weave).

You are very welcome. I own the original Ovcio woven cashmere wrap (and a couple of scarfs) and a TravelWrap knitted classic cashmere wrap. Both are really soft and nice – the Travel Wrap is definitely a bit more luxurious but also more delicate (the tight weave of the woven Ovcio one means it is not as prone to snags). Happy to send you a photo comparison of those two if you want to send me an email.

Now, about the new knitted Ovcio wraps. I have not personally tried one of the new Ovcio knitted wraps or scarfs (the new line of FlexKnit wraps) but they do appear to be more similar to the machine knitted wraps from The TravelWrap. If you look on Ovcio’s website, there are some pretty good close up photos so you can see both a close-up of the woven one versus the knitted one. Then you can compare the FlexKnit wrap from Ovcio to the Travel Wrap classic wraps which are all knitted. These definitely look a lot more similar and I imagine feel similar as well.

I don’t see a lot of details about the specific knitting process for the Ovcio ones, so for example the ply or knit gauge (which affect thickness and tightness of the weave), so it is hard to made a direct comparison without that info. I will contact them about this and see if I can get a sample of one of these so I can update my post as well.

One of the great things about both companies is they have really good return policies. So if you order one and are not happy, you can always return it if you don’t love it.

I am guessing you probably already made your choice about a travel wrap. But I wanted to let you know that I contacted Ovcio and got a sample of one of their new FlexKnit wraps.

So comparing the Ovcio FlexKnit wraps and TravelWrap Classic wraps, according to both companies, both are 100% cashmere, machine knitted, 2 ply, and knitted with a similar knit gauge. Both have similar straight edges (no fringes) but the TravelWraps borders are wider, ribbed, and more defined. The TravelWrap comes in a much wider availability of colors and hues than the Ovcio.

Both are similar in terms of size but the TravelWrap one is a little wider – Ovcio’s FlexKnit wrap is 180 X 75cm wrap and the TravelWrap is 180cm X 90cm. The TravelWrap wrap weighs a little bit more than the Ovcio. Both come with a nice travel bag/pouch and a box, but the TravelWrap ones are nicer in quality.

Obviously, there is a big difference in the price as you noted. I will say that the TravelWrap does feel plusher to the touch, the edges look a bit nicer, and it is a little wider. The Ovio is made in China and the TravelWrap is made in Scotland, where there is obviously a big difference in labor costs. The TravelWrap bag and box are also a bit nicer, and they also offer monogramming and gift wrap services.

But both are great cashmere wraps and the TravelWrap is just a more premium product. I hope this helps in making your choice. As I mentioned, both companies offer good customer service and return policies (always be sure to double check latest policies), so if you are unhappy with a product, you should be able to return or exchange it.

What a fantastic list of travel wraps. I visited here a couple months ago and purchased a Happyluxe wrap (love that they are made in USA) and an Ovcio cashmere wrap. I use the Happyluxe for daily travel use – great for planes, buses, etc. – and the Ovcio one I use for going out for dinner and nicer occasions. Both have been great and very happy with purchases.

I found you again as I am planning to purchase a second Ovcio wrap in a different color to use for a special event this winter where I will be making a speech.

I travel by plane about six or seven times a year so a travel shawl would come in handy. I can also see it working for long car journeys.

I am always cold on airplanes, and the blankets they have (If you are lucky enough to get one) never seem to be quite enough. I often end up trying to drape my coat over my legs. I think this is a great idea.. and maybe handy for a movie theater as well. Sometimes in the summer, the AC is turned up so high that I’m actually cold on a hot day!

Years ago, on my first trip to Bangkok, I bought a few pashminas at a night market. Little did I know they’d be more than a pretty souvenir by which to remember the trip. For years now, one of those same pashminas has traveled the world with me.

A great travel scarf is my head and shoulder covering for places of worship, a blanket when those airplane air-conditioning vents freeze me from head to toe, a makeshift towel on many spontaneous beach excursions and, of course, wrapped around my neck to keep me warm on chilly days.

There are tons of options when it comes to travel scarves and neck warmers, even some with built in  travel pillows . Choose a travel scarf that adds a pop of color to an outfit, keeps you warm, and is as versatile as you are. Just as there’s a travel destination out there for each and every one of us, the same goes for scarves. The Best Travel Scarf Pillows

It’s a pillow, no it’s a scarf. It’s a pillow scarf!

One item – multiple uses. Whether traveling for work or pleasure, most of us try to grab our much-needed sleep whenever we can. Instead of getting off a plane or train with an irritating crick in the neck from trying to contort yourself into a comfortable position, pack one of these dual duty pillows. Travel scarves that include a pillow ease the discomfort and set us up for sleeping success.

Trtl  $30

Material:  fleece

This scarf-like, fleece, ‘turtle’ pillow seems to provide its users with comfortable sleep anywhere. Scientifically proven neck support with adjustable fastening, and half the size of U-shaped travel pillow, Trtl weighs just half a pound. The downside is that this is not a scarf you’re you’re going to wear for fashion. It’s for sleeping only. According to their website, the product has been spotted on quite a few famous necklines.

Infinity Pillow  – $39

Material:  bamboo

Made out of bamboo fabric, this travel pillow doubles as an infinity scarf. While it won’t cover your tootsies on that chilly flight, it will allow you to skip the annoying head bob and will lessen the need for acupuncture when you land. This one isn’t exactly a fashion statement either, but if comfort and rest are your primary goals, it will keep your neck warm too.

Neck Warmer Travel Scarves: Keep it Simple

Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. When a scarf is too big for a pocket, purse , or person, grab a neck warmer. These flexible guys are often a quick fix for blustery days, or flexible cold fighting, when a full sized travel scarf is just too much.

For years, these have been my go to neck warmer. Whether it’s a blustery day on a boardwalk, a winter meeting at an outdoor coffee chop or tacking on a few extra days of adventure after a  business trip  – Buff works.

Choose from cotton, fleece, merino and more. Layer these neck warmers under your blanket scarf, hoodie, or jacket. Shove it in a pocket when the sunshine comes out, or double it as a headband when you grab a yoga class in the middle of your workday.

Buy more than one and fling them in every bag you have.

How to Choose the Perfect Travel Scarf

To choose the right travel scarf, consider material, versatility, size, and whether or not you need pockets. For people who have sensitive skin, the material matters a lot. Shorter than average people need to weigh the pros and cons of additional length and wrap styles. If you’re cold all the time, thickness is going to be a factor. Light packers who insist on versatility will be looking for something lightweight, but that serves multiple purposes. There’s so much more to to shopping for scarves than just color and cost.

Cotton, bamboo, acrylic, wool, merino wool, polyester, rayon, acrylic – so many options. Each one has its own benefits. Price, comfort, feel, texture and breathability are a few of the factors consider when choosing the material of your next travel scarf.              

For winter (and those of us who are cold all the time), cashmere and merino wool will keep you the warmest; these are also more breathable fabrics.

Acrylic and polyester are much more cost effective but won’t keep you as warm. Some people will find that these synthetic fabrics can cause different reactions on different skin types.

For summer travel scarves and those in between days and the when fashion is more important than warmth, cotton is perfect. A light and airy option, cotton provides versatility, but won’t be the fastest drying option.

Versatility

There are a myriad of options on the market. Whether you’re hitting the brick and mortar stores to check out the feel of a material in your hand, or trolling the digital aisles for your perfect purchase – consider how you plan to use your scarf and where you’re likely to journey with your new find.

• If bundling up is your thing –  the blanket scarf is for you
• If you’re looking for warmth and fashion with a little less bulk –  look at infinity scarves
• Capes and ponchos –  are great for extra warmth but can run a bit higher in price, are  bulkier and harder to pack
• Throw it over your shoulders and add a belt –  voila, now you have an added outer layer to accessorize any outfit
• Tie it in front –  for an evening wrap on one of those chilly travel nights on the town
• For a simple shrug –  throw it over your shoulders, under the arms and tie in the back
• Instant cover up –  pop it over your head and shoulders as a covering or tie it around your waist to elongate a short skirt when visiting a place of worship
• Tie and tie again –  and use it as a trendy hair wrap for those long, busy travel days

Hidden Pockets

Scarves with hidden pockets are made for travel. They keep your items hidden from view and allow you to wear your valuable belongings close to your body. Hide your money, keys, headphones, or even a snack in the pocket of your travel scarf for those long haul travel days.

• Anything with pockets is always helpful –  especially when traveling
• Pockets are terrific for lightweight items –  like room keys, flash drives, and money
• Depending on how you wrap your scarf –  heavier items (like phones and passports) may cause the scarf to shift position
• Choosing a scarf of a bulkier fabric –  (like wool or fleece) or wrapping it a few extra times will keep those heavier items more stable

Size Matters

Let me just come out and say that blanket scarves are not for everyone. If you’re shorter than average, you already know that one size rarely fits “all.”  Size really does matter!

Although my sister-in-law (who is a good 5 inches taller than me) can rock a blanket scarf like a boss, on me it looks like I’m wrapping myself in a blanket (not in a good way). 

This especially applied to the pocket scarves I tested. The length between shoulder and chest differs on each person. Lightweight items worked great in the pockets. Phones and other heavier items didn’t sit in the right spot on me very well, yet some of my taller friends who tried it on looked and felt like they were ready for the travel runway. Some of the fit was dependent on how the scarf was wrapped, but some of it was just a factor of body size.

Neck Warmers

For those quick runs between modes of transport, the meet up that’s taking place in the park, or the co-living space outing that’s just a shade too chilly – a neck warmer might be all you need.

For plane and train trips, larger scarves are perfect – one part accessory, one part blanket warmth; but if your wrap or cape doesn’t cover your neck, add a simple neck warmer for a little extra protection. 

Fashion Meets Function

Fashion matters in travel. No one wants to look like a tourist. Although a travel scarf isn’t an absolute necessity, it might be game-changer you need to make travel that much more comfortable and fashionable.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Neck Pillow : We love that this pillow is high-quality and made with luxurious material, but it doesn't come with a carrying case, which we think you would need to keep this pillow protected.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

We sent out 24 travel pillows to our testing experts to use during their upcoming trips. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched popular options to fit a variety of comfort preferences, including pillows made of memory foam and microbeads, and tested different shapes, too. 

On a scale of one to five, our testers rated the pillows based on comfort, quality, durability, and portability. The pillows with the best comfort scores met or exceeded our expectations for special features, including cooling, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer. Our testers used the pillows for several hours at a time, if not longer, to see how comfy they were while sleeping, reading, or watching a movie while traveling. We asked our testers to note if they were able to sleep with the pillow on, if it caused any neck pain or discomfort, and how warm or cool the pillow felt around the neck. To check for quality and durability, our testers examined the build of the pillow to feel how well-made it appeared. After using the pillows during trips, they judged durability based on their functionality after several uses. The pillows with the highest score for portability were able to compress down into carrying bags that allow travelers to transport the pillow with exceptional ease. The best pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage. 

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it restricts your breathing and can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key 

Whether you pack light or over-pack, a travel pillow that compacts into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station.  

Consider the filling material 

Travelers who like a more firm pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping. 

Generally, washing instructions will be included with the purchase of a travel pillow or on its tag. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our testers opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth or rag dipped into soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that wraps around the neck to support the neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability. Finally, while traditional pillows might be better suited for a traveler in the window seat, there are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat.

I ordered 3 scarves to decide which one to keep and return the 2 others. After receiving the return label and mailing package at post office, I was informed only 1 scarf was in package. Handy scarf for all seasons

The scarf was as thin and big as on the advertisement videos. Also the dark red color was matching. As I have bought at least 7 of the Featherweight scarves, for myself and as gifts, I obviously adore the product. But I was mad at customer service for awhile as I had a complicated issue and wanted to speak to a person. But your system worked out well and my issue was solved and I received my scarf. We’re finally able to tell Umar Zameer’s side of the story.

Zameer’s lawyer told the jury at his first-degree murder trial that the Woodbridge accountant had been out with his pregnant wife and toddler son celebrating Canada Day in 2021 when they were confronted by two strangers in the empty underground parking lot beneath Nathan Phillips Square.

Nader Hasan insisted the couple didn’t realize the pair were police officers, and Zameer panicked as he tried to drive his family to safety.

But in his haste to get away, his lawyer said, Zameer accidentally struck and killed veteran Const. Jeffrey Northrup, who had been investigating a stabbing that night as part of 52 Division’s plainclothes Major Crime Unit.

“It was not a murder, it was a horrific, tragic accident — but not a crime,” said Hasan.

The Crown and defence delivered starkly divergent opening statements as the high-profile trial finally got underway.

“This collision was avoidable,” insisted prosecutor Michael Cantlon.

“The issue in this case is why Mr. Zameer chose to make a series of manoeuvres, driving his vehicle in close proximity of two people who were also police officers. The issue is also whether Mr. Zameer knew or was willfully blind that Officer Northrup was a police officer acting in the execution of his duties.”

Hasan told the jury that they’ll hear from Zameer himself, as well as his wife, Aaida Shaikh, who was eight months pregnant at the time and wearing a headscarf, who were terrified that they were being ambushed and boxed in — four members of another Muslim family had been rammed and killed just a month earlier in London, Ont. — and they didn’t know Northrup and his partner, Lisa Forbes, were actually police officers or that the dark unmarked van that suddenly blocked their way was also with Toronto Police.

It was the stabbing of a young man that night that set the tragedy in motion.

The jury was shown footage of the shirtless youth bleeding from his abdomen near City Hall — the Zameer family had actually passed him as they walked around downtown — and Northrup, in shorts and a baggy shirt, had responded with his fellow officers in plainclothes to investigate.

While a badge is visible around Forbes’ neck in the above ground footage, no such badge can be seen on Northrup.

Believing the crime had occurred in the underground parking garage, the Crown said the officers headed downstairs to look for evidence. Meanwhile, the Zameer family was already in the deserted lot — they’d packed up their stroller with the Canada Day pinwheel attached, put their little boy in his car seat and were preparing to head home.

Cantlon said Forbes and Northrup approached Zameer’s car to see if he had any information, and Forbes will testify that she identified herself “more than once” as police.

Zameer’s wife will testify that she saw a police badge, the prosecutor said, but thought it was fake.

The accused ignored the officers’ calls to stop when he reversed and then pulled forward, Cantlon continued, sideswiping Northrup and knocking him to the ground. Zameer then drove over the 6-foot-3, 299-pound officer, he said, accelerating to get over him, before driving away.

“Officer Northrup suffered multiple blunt force injuries,” the Crown said. “He was broken and bruised almost from head to toe.”

He had a fractured spine, multiple broken rib bones and a lacerated liver. “He was crushed by Mr. Zameer’s vehicle, driven by Mr. Zameer.”

The driver’s lawyer maintained it was a “horrifically tragic accident.”

“Now, Officer Forbes and Northrup are police officers, but Umar and Aaida don’t know that. They’re certainly not dressed like police officers,” Hasan said. “From Umar and Aaida’s perspective, they weren’t behaving like police officers either — rushing towards the car without any warning and banging on the car window.

“Now the Crown says Officer Forbes and Officer Northrup clearly and professionally identified themselves as police. You’ll have to decide whether to believe that after you’ve heard all the evidence.”

Hasan said the panicked Zameer believed the only way to save his family was to drive away quickly; he had no idea he’d clipped Northrup while reversing his car or that the man had been knocked into his path when he drove forward.

And he posed a key question.

“Ask yourselves whether it makes sense that this young man, an accountant, family man, who has never been in trouble before, decided all of a sudden to kill a police officer while his pregnant wife and toddler sat alongside.”
