The Best Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames, London
June 22, 2021
A new hotel opening prompted me to head to southwest London and fall in love with Kingston all over again. Don’t overlook this characterful neighbourhood. Instead, allow me to show you the best things to do in Kingston Upon Thames in London.

The Best Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames
Why kingston.
Just 30 minutes by train from central London, Kingston upon Thames pulls off something of a magic trick. Part stand-alone neighbourhood village, with unique medieval buildings and history. Part seamless modern space with shopping options to convert even the most devour of puritanical monks into the 21st century consumer capital.
Kingston works as a launchpad into the world of history, shopping and leafy riverside walks. And though I lived there during my doctoring days, a new hotel just outside the busy centre brought me back.
Let me tell you all about the best things to do in Kingston, as well as take you through a review of the new hotel, The Kingston 1. And just before you think there are too many kings in that sentence…my address used to be Mr & Dr King, Kingston Hill, Kingston. For real.
What is there to do in Kingston upon Thames?
What is Kingston upon Thames famous for?
Here’s the short version:
- Leafy riverside walks and cafes
- The Bentalls Centre and every shop you could dream of
- Wild open parks like Richmond Park and Bushy Park
- Hampton Court Palace – the former home of King Henry VIII

However, as ever, as always, we keep the right to write what we like and make our own recommendations. There’s just no point otherwise!
When should you visit Kingston upon Thames?
You’ll find plenty of things to do in Kingston Upon Thames all year around. However, if lazing by the river is high on your agenda, then your best bet is during the summer months of May to September. Although, as with everything to do with the weather in Britain: nothing is guaranteed.
The Best Things to do in Kingston upon Thames, London
Browse Kingston Ancient Market
On any day of the week, head to Ancient Market Place Kingston to find Kingston’s market going strong. It’s been going strong since around 1170 or so, selling flowers, fresh vegetables, pastries and street food. Each winter, twinkling lights and sugar dust turn Kingston Market into one of the best Christmas Markets in London.
Stroll along the riverside
A beautiful path meanders along the banks of the Thames, dotted with cafes and restaurants and under the watchful eye of mallard ducks and swans. Watch rowing boats glide past and think about how much history has taken place just upstream and downstream of this spot.
Shop in the gleaming Bentall Centre
I’m not the first to notice the similarity between houses of worship of the past and shopping centres of the present. But following that line of thought makes the Bentall Centre the St Paul’s Cathedral or Notre Dame of shopping malls.
Gleaming in geometric white, the Bentall Centre is home to more than 1000 different brands in more than 75 shops and stores. Even if shopping is not your thing, it’s worth paying a visit to marvel at the design.
Shop in the independent boutiques
While the Bentall Centre and the Ancient Market are focal talking points, for obvious reasons, Kingston’s trading and shopping offering runs beyond those two. You’ll find specialist shops for old vinyl records, craft beer, haberdashery and more as well as the fresh produce of the market and big names of the Bentall Centre and High Street.
Take architecture tours
One of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames in London involves travelling back through time through bricks and mortar. From the gleaming, modern Bentall Centre to the flavours of Kingston’s ancient market and the All Saints Church, you can spot sculptures, facades, shields and all kinds of architectural accoutrements.
But all is not as it appears. Take the Jack Wills building above, full of dark Tudor beams and saints and shields. And although Hampton Court Palace, a Tudor stronghold, lies just across the river, this Tudor facade is, well, a facade.
It was constructed during the Victorian era to add a sense of grandeur to this meeting place of Saxon Kings.
You can walk around Kingston yourself easily enough, but to get more from the experience, try out an architectural tour like this.
Visit the Rose Theatre
The Rose Theatre in Kingston takes its inspiration from the Rose Theatre of the first Elizabethan era, a place where Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe saw their work come to life. This new version has a few more comforts than the original, however. You’ll notice a roof and some comfortable modern seats. Thankfully.
Sip cocktails and dine at the Kingston 1
In the name of nothing but research, I caught up with an old friend to try out the new cocktails at Solo Restaurant at the Kingston One Hotel. Freshly made, the Solo Martini had a sense of sophistication, while the Pornstar Martini had a dreadful name but refreshing, pomegranate taste.
You can also dine here and sip cocktails elsewhere but more about that later.
Roam around Richmond Park
One of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames involves enjoying the outdoor activities along the river and in Richmond Park. When I lived in Kingston, I went cycling every morning through Richmond Park. It’s one of the Royal Parks, with free access and maintained gardens, cycle paths and hiking routes.
If you go there quietly, you’ll likely see deer wandering through the grass.
Visit Hampton Court Palace
Ah, Hampton Court Palace. The huge, imposing former home of one of England’s most notorious of monarchs: King Henry VIII. Yes, he of the six wives, the split with Rome and the reformation and the series involving Jonathan Rhys Meyers, depending on your preference for history and pop culture.
Originally owned by Henry’s most trusted adviser, Cardinal Wolsey, it became Henry’s as the former slipped from power and the high stakes nature of Tudor life took its toll.
Several other royals lived here afterwards, but it’s the Tudor period that keeps the crowds coming back and trying to make sense of it all.
The Tudor Kitchens
A Tudor soundtrack greets you as you first head under the arch and across the cobblestones. Props and displays list the banqueting feast orders and provide a glimpse into the daily lives of the staff who worked here.
Elsewhere, you can see the small chapel where royal christenings and funerals took place, as well as the grand hall where various queens took turns at being alive and well before things soon took a turn for the worse.
Planning a trip to Hampton Court Palace
Have I mentioned yet that it’s a big, big place? Plan on giving yourself at least half a day to make your way around. Perhaps even a full day if you’re a big fan and want to spend plenty of time in the gardens.
During normal times, you’ll find a functioning cafe and car park, as well as toilets and plenty of benches.
Where to Stay in Kingston upon Thames, London
You’ll find plenty of options for somewhere to stay in Kingston, from vacation rentals to budget and business hotels.
Yet I’d like to highlight the Kingston 1, a boutique spot just far enough from the crazy centre to give you some peace, but close enough to walk to in less than 10 minutes. Here’s my review of the Kingston 1 hotel.
The Kingston 1 Hotel Review
Describing itself as a “new hotel, neighbourhood restaurant and bar off the beaten track,” the Kingston 1 is a whole lotta fun.
It’s hardly off the beaten track at all, being just ten minutes walk from the Bentall Centre. But it is far enough away that you feel as though you’re in a real London neighbourhood, not a tourist trap.
The vibe is understated modern cool but it’s definitely not pretentious. With 22 rooms, it’s small but not tiny but it does hold a hallowed resource when it comes to London hotels. Limited, but some, parking spaces available.
It is, as they say, ideal for staycationers, foodies and business travellers.
Decked out in cool white and charcoal, with splashes of blue and gold, the decor is calming in each of the 22 rooms. Two suites provide an additional living area and premium bar area, while the other guest rooms come as Standard Double, Standard King, Executive Double and Executive King.
You’ll hear the authentic London soundtrack outside and it’s still a busy spot. Personally, I find this soothing and enjoy the sense of place, but if you’re looking for silence and solitude, it’s wise to pack some ear plugs.
Toiletries come from The White Company’s Noir collection and, to many a woman’s relief, include conditioner as well as the standard shampoo, shower gel and body lotion supplies.
The Restaurant
The main restaurant, Solo at the Kingston 1, shrugs off the bland feel of many a hotel restaurant with innovative decor and creative food.
Open to the public, including for breakfast and brunch, Solo ups its game further on Thursday to Saturday. Then Head Chef Marco Palazzo from The Hoxton and Jamie’s Italian brings out his chef’s menu, a mix of Italian technique with local British produce.
I chose the signature charred octopus tentacle with olive tapenade, while my friend chose the spinach and ricotta cannelloni. I then opted for the rib eye steak and finished off with the chocolate fondant with hazelnut praline.
The open plan ground floor moves from restaurant to cafe to lounge bar and reception, making good use of the space and switching atmospheres as it goes.
The cocktails are divine. Especially the horribly named but tangy-sweet pornstar martini.
What I Loved
- The cool decor in the rooms and warm and welcoming lounge area.
- The friendly, attentive staff.
- The parking space!
- The fantastic location to get out and explore.
- The charred octopus.
- The cocktail list.
What To Know
- There’s no lift (elevator) so you need to carry luggage upstairs.
- You’ll hear the sounds of London life through the windows.
How to Book
Rooms start at £120 GBP. Email [email protected]
Getting to Kingston upon Thames
Kingston upon Thames sits in greater London on the River Thames, just 12 miles from Westminster and 25 minutes by train to London Waterloo. Kingston has its own station but you may find more frequent connections from nearby Surbiton station and Norbiton station. All three stations lie within zone 6 and can be accessed with the Oyster Card. Surbiton town centre is quieter than Kingston, so I wouldn’t recommend a stay there unless you have a specific reason to go there.
If driving in London freaks you out, bear in mind that the roads around Kingston upon Thames are more genteel than those around Marble Arch and Oxford Circus.
Kingston is close to the M3, A3 and M4 and only 8 miles from the M25. Parking is relatively easy, with numerous car parks, but costs can be high. You can also easily drive from central Kingston upon Thames to Hampton Court Palace, which has its own car park.
Kingston’s closest airport is the international behemoth Heathrow Airport, with good bus and taxi connections between the two. You can also, of course, travel to Gatwick Airport or London City Airport, but the connection will take longer.

The Best Things to Do in Kingston upon Thames in 2024 (from a Londoner)
Looking for the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames? From a royally historic past to modern riverside charm, here’s everything to get up to in one of London’s most hidden gems — from a Londoner.

Just 25 minutes from Waterloo is a London neighbourhood overlooked by many, but well worth the visit. Yes my friends, I’m talking about Kingston upon Thames.
Located on the banks of the River Thames, this suburban area is rich in history and culture and has quickly become one of my favourite London neighbourhoods.
From its unique attractions and buzzing markets to its wonderful restaurants and riverside walks, Kingston offers a great day out for anyone and everyone.
And despite the debate, no…it’s not Surrey!
Without further ado here’s all the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames.

Top Pick: Where to Stay in Kingston upon Thames
The Double Tree Hotel is perfectly situated in Kingston upon Thames’ town centre. Fit with lovely contemporary rooms, a terrace, fitness centre, and an on-site restaurant.
Top Pic k : Best Experience in Kingston upon Thames
Go Boat Kingston is the most unique (and fun) experience in the neighbourhood. The self-driving electric boats take you across the Thames, seating up to eight passengers with no licence or previous boating experience required.
Plus you can bring your own food & drink!

Explore the life of Henry VIII at the grand Hampton Court Palace , just 8 minutes away from Kingston upon Thames!
Roam The Market Place in Kingston’s Town Centre
The Market Place in Kingston is one of the best places to go in Kingston upon Thames to see the neighbourhood in full swing.
Established in the late 12th century by a Royal Charter, the marketplace itself sits proudly in Kingston’s town centre, now home to many independent retailers including butchers, bakers, greengrocers, florists and more.
It’s open 7 days a week from 10am – 5pm — so perfect for grabbing a bite or simply taking in the ambience before exploring the rest of Kingston.
You’ll also find the ever-so-beautiful All Saint’s Church here, a medieval church and past Coronation site, open to the public (they also have a cafe and do wine & cheese nights ever so often!)
P.S. – If you’re visiting during the festive season, don’t miss out on the Kingston Christmas Market held each year in November and December.
Stroll (& eat) on the Kingston Riverside
Some say the best of London can be found on the Thames, and in Kingston’s case — I think it’s true!
The Kingston Riverside is one of my favourite bits of the neighbourhood, where you can go from taking a leisurely stroll to wining and dining like a local in an instant.
A walk here includes vibrant and picturesque scenes of South West and Surrey, watching boats lazily drift by with lush greenery and beautiful Victorian estates as your backdrop.
Outside of the scenery, there’s plenty of buzzing restaurants and pubs to choose from. Including Bill’s , Busaba , Comptoir Libanais , Haché Riverside Social , Brown’s , Côte Brasserie , The Ram Pub & Restaurants , The Boater’s Inn , and The Bishop to name a few.

Go Boat Kingston
Like I said taking up the Thames is one of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames, so Go Boat Kingston is pretty much a must-do for your trip to the neighbourhood.
The self-driving electric boats are up for hire all year round, seating up to eight passengers with no licence or previous boating experience required.
But don’t worry, I’ve done it before and you’re provided with full training before they set you off!
Rides can last anywhere from 1-4 hours and you can bring your own food and drink which is always a plus.
Once you’re onboard you’ll ride past the charm of Kingston Bridge, Thames Ditton, Teddington Lock and Hampton Court Palace (depending on how far you go).
See the Coronation Stone
While you’re strolling Kingston upon Thames keep your eyes peeled for the town’s most iconic landmark, the Coronation Stone .
Once part of an ancient stone circle, this large block of sandstone marks where seven Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned from 900 – 979 AD.
This place has been witness to some incredible scenes over the centuries, and the Coronation Stone itself is a beautiful reminder of our nation’s history.
Whether you want to snap some #historylover photos or just take in the atmosphere, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames.
Check out the Iconic Telephone Box Sculpture
The David Mach Sculpture “Out of Order” is a well-known landmark in Kingston upon Thames and if you love iconic London telephone boxes, it’s a must-visit really.
The sculpture consists of 12 vintage red telephone boxes arranged in a line, as though they are about to topple over one another (or are telling each other secrets).
It stands 4 metres high and is 15 metres long, making it an impressive sight for visitors to the neighbourhood.
Created in 1989, David Mach’s Kingston creation is a fantastic example of modern public art and a now iconic symbol of Kingston upon Thames. Be sure to snap a photo!
P.S. – You can also check out the Chimps Are Family exhibition while you’re here!
Shop at Bentalls
You can’t say you’ve been to Kingston without a cheeky shop at Bentalls .
The mega leisure centre is part of the Fenwick brand and is a prime shopping destination for Kingston tourists and locals alike.
While here you’ll find retail favourites like H&M , Zara , Nike and Apple , alongside dozens of restaurants, casual eateries, bookshops (hey Waterstones ) and entertainment.
When you’re done shopping you can slide onto Clarence Street to hear street performers doing their thing.
Kingston Pub & Nightlife Scene
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Canbury Arms (@canburyarms)
If a good time is on your mind then you’ve picked the right place with a visit to Kingston upon Thames.
From traditional pubs like The Boater’s Inn , which boasts a riverside balcony, beer garden with microbrewed pints and live music Fridays to modern establishments like The Canbury Arms with its large Victorian pub brought up to date with bright decor, conservatory and brasserie menu, there’s something for everyone.
Then there’s The Fighting Cocks Kingston , a proper rock bar with live music, pool tables, drinks specials and a lively crowd every night.
Don’t forget The Grey Horse , which is the perfect place to chill out with its BBQ, burgers and whisky offerings plus regular live bands and comedy shows.
For sports head to O’Neill’s , where you can sit back and enjoy big-screen sports, live music, and delicious Irish pub food & drinks.
And lastly, for something more sophisticated, slide your way into Incognito — Kingston upon Thames’ most fashionable cocktail destination.
See a play at The Rose Theatre
When your evening winds down it’s time to take up a show at The Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames.
Modelled after the original Elizabethan Rose Theatre on London’s Bankside, Rose Theatre is South West London’s largest producing theatre.
Spilling in high-quality productions, comedy shows and immersive theatrical experiences, the Rose truly has something for everyone.
P.S. – If you’ve just moved to Kingston you’ll be pleased to know they also offer an array of educational activities to help to nurture emerging talent and serve the local community.
Visit the Kingston University Library
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kingston Uni Library (@kingstonunilib)
Tucked in Kingston University is the Kingston University Library, and it’s open to the public!
If you’ve just moved to the area or are looking to get some work done in Kingston upon Thames their cafe and study areas are a great place to tuck in with a laptop or a book for the day.
P.S. – From April 24th to June 11th every year you’ll only be allowed to go to the cafe as it’s exam season .

See the Latest Exhibition at the Kingston Museum
Built in 1904 the Kingston Museum is a bit of a staple to Kingston upon Thames, and a lovely add to your things to do in Kingston upon Thames itinerary.
The Grade II listed building was built in 1901, present-day filled with a variety of exhibits and collections on everything from Kingston’s local history to fine art and archaeology.
If you’re looking to learn a bit more of Kingston’s history a visit here is a must, plus entry is free!
It’s also housed inside the same building as the Kingston Library if you want to follow up your exhibit wanders with a good read.
P.S. – If you like history be sure to add the Kingston History Centre to your list too!
Catch a film at Curzon Cinema
View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Bentall Centre (@thebentallcentre)
When it’s time to wind down from your buzzing day in Kingston make your way to Curzon Cinema .
The upscale cinema is where you go for a movie experience like no other, at the top of the Bentall Centre!
Whether it’s enjoying table service from the comfort of your cosy Curzon movie seat to catching a Curzon exclusive it’s one of my favourite places in Kingston upon Thames to end the day.
Have fun at Rotunda
There are not many ways to describe The Rotunda outside of a hub of fun.
The entertainment centre houses 4 different restaurants ( The Cornerstone Pub , Pizza Express , Kung Fu and Five Guys ), an Odeon Cinema , Escape Rooms , Bowling and a Children’s Centre , plus a David Llyods gym if you’re in need of a workout after all the fun you’ve had.
Picnic in Canbury Gardens
Nothing defines a Kingston upon Thames day out quite like a stroll through Canbury Gardens.
This beautiful green walk is located right on the Kingston riverside, perfect for taking in the Kingston scenery like a local, and if the UK weather allows it — having a picnic!
P.S. – Here’s the picnic blanket I swear by.
Roam Richmond Park
Although it’s also in Richmond of course, through the Kingston Gate entrance you’ll be able to explore the magical Richmond Park (and the Richmond area if you choose).
For ease, I’ll leave you with my guide on the best things to do in Richmond Park , *hint hint* there may be deer watching involved.
Visit Hampton Court Palace & Ham House
From exploring Henry VIII’s Grade I listed palace to enjoying the grounds of a 17th-century National Trust Site, both Hampton Court Palace and Ham House are incredibly close to Kingston upon Thames (and worth the bucket list add).
How to get to Hampton Court Palace from Kingston upon Thames:
Kingston upon Thames to Hampton Court Palace is only an 8-minute drive (or 34-minute walk). But if you’re coming by public transit I suggest the following:
For the scenic route, take the 65 bus towards Richmond, followed by a boat from Richmond Pier to Hampton Court .
Otherwise, you can take Bus 111 at Cromwell Road Bus Station towards Heathrow Central or head to Kingston’s Train Station and take the SWR train towards Hampton Court.
How to get to Ham House from Kingston upon Thames:
Kingston upon Thames to Ham House is a 12-minute drive or 50-minute walk.
The best way to get there is taking bus 65 towards Ealing and getting off at Petersham Fox & Duck, it’ll be a 13-minute walk from there.
Visit the Kingston Christmas Market
There’s no other place I’d rather be during Christmas in London than the Kingston Christmas Market .
Every year Kingston’s Ancient Market turns into a winter wonderland, fit with independent Christmas traders, live music, delicious food and all the mulled wine you could dream of.
And the best part? Entry is free! So you have no excuse not to come by when you’re out and about in Kingston.

Things to do in South West London from Kingston in Detail
1. visit kingston ancient market.
One of the top things to do in Kingston Upon Thames is to browse the Kingston Ancient Market. The open air market in Kingston is a great place to pick up some fruit and veg or grab a bite for lunch.
2. Seek "Out of Order"
David Mach's "Out of Order" is probably Kingston's most famous tourist attraction. Located at the end of Old London Road, "Out of Order" depicts several bright red phone booths tipping like dominos.
This modern art installation has been in place for over 10 years and is a popular South West London photo spot.
3. Tour Strawberry Hill House and Gardens
Catch the bus from Kingston to Strawberry Hill House and Gardens. This neo-Gothic mansion was built in Georgian times by Horace Walpole, son of England's first Prime Minister.
Insider Strawberry Hill House, you'll find amazing period stained glass protected by pocket shutters.
Pay 12.50 GBP for a self-guided tour. Knowledgeable docents in each room are a wealth of information about the house and historic personalities who lived there.
One of the most memorable scenes from Strawberry Hill House is the bright red gallery with gold leaf ceiling featuring a historic painting of Catherine de Medici and 4 of her 10 children.
The painting was donated in lieu of paying inheritance tax (apparently a fairly common thing in England).
4. Make a Pitstop for Coffee and Cake at The Mugs Patisserie
We walked from Strawberry Hill House to Twickenham, about a 10 minute walk.
We enjoyed a slice of carrot cake plus eggs with avocado puree on toast served with an Americano at The Mugs Patisserie. Mugs looks kind of unassuming from the outside, but the food is fab!
5. Enjoy an Indian Feast at Atithi in Twickenham
If you are hungrier for more than just cake and coffee, I recommend enjoying an Indian feast at Atithi in Twickenham. Poppadoms and spicy dipping sauces took the edge off our appetite. We followed it up with fish pieces atop a spicy green sauce.
Vegetarian curry, rice, and naan rounded out the meal nicely. They even brought me a bowl of chopped raw chillies to kick things up a notch.
My eyes were watering from the spicy food as I looked around to appreciate the decor. Atithi is definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in South West London.
6. Shop Church Street in Twickenham
Walk into Twickenham and onto pedestrianized Church Street. Browse quaint shops selling unique local souvenirs or simply bask in the atmosphere and grab some photos for your Instagram feed.
7. Stroll York House Gardens
Emerge at the end of Church Street and head into York House Gardens. It's fun to amble through York House Gardens along a very quiet section of the River Thames in Twickenham.
Follow the promenade along the river. We took a short detour when we spotted some statues peeking above the hedges and discovered a delightful and mossy ornate Italian fountain.
Continuing on, we found all sorts of colorful wildflowers. Another small mossy pond was tucked away down a narrow path over a wooden bridge.
We left the York House Gardens through an open gate and once again found ourselves along the river.
8. Tour Eel Pie Island
Make sure to take a brief tour of Eel Pie Island, another place to visit in South West London with fascinating history. Eel Pie Island was famous for its Jazz and Blues clubs in the 1960s.
We crossed the bridge to the island and spent about 15 minutes walking around. We were faced with gates and 'private property' signs at every turn. It wasn't a particularly inviting place.
The one exception was the Loveshack whose gate was wide open. I smiled when I saw the notice posted on the gate: Notice: Thank you for noticing this new notice. Your noticing it has been noted.
We left the island and continued a short walk along the Thames. We discovered an informational sign that highlighted some of the musical artists that got their start on Eel Pie Island.
9. Stop for a Drink at the White Swan on the Thames
We'd done a lot of walking and exploration at this point and decided to stopping for a cheeky afternoon drink (Sipsmith Gin and Tonic for me!) at the White Swan on the Thames in Twickenham.
Sit out on the porch near the entrance or on the terrace closer to the Thames. We saw some tide markings which led me to believe that sometimes the terrace is inaccessible when the river is running high.
Fortunately for us, there were no issues on the day that we visited and we were able to enjoy our quiet drink against the backdrop of the Thames.
10. Visit Orleans House Gallery
We continued our walk along the Thames Path between Twickenham and Richmond in South West London. In the process, we stumbled upon Orleans House Gallery.
Check out free modern art exhibits and a chance to see the historic Octagon Room. We were encouraged to move around the pieces in an exhibit about the Nile to contribute to an ever-changing narrative, much like the ever-changing nature of the Nile River itself.
11. Walk Marble Hill Park
We continued on to Marble Hill Park. The park was quite large and we passed the coach house and ice house before arriving in front of Marble Hill House, a Palladian mansion built for the mistress of King George II.
Marble Hill House and Park is worth a visit if you are passing through the area, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit if I didn't have another reason to be in this area of South West London.
12. Enjoy Coffee and Cake at Islay in Teddington
We took the bus from Marble Hill Park to Teddington, another super-quaint place to visit in South West London.
We took the opportunity to pop into Islay Coffee and Cake to warm up with an espresso. Islay Coffee and Cake had a great local vibe.
13. Walk Along the River Thames from Teddington Lock to Kingston.
Properly fueled from the coffee break, take the opportunity to walk the Thames Path from Teddington Lock back to Kingston.
The walk takes about 45 minutes and largely traces the course of the River Thames. We emerged among lovely shade trees and the calls of parrots in Canbury Gardens in Kingston.
Kitschy flamingo boats, swan boats, and house boats covered in items of flair proliferate along the Thames in Kingston.
14. Indulge in Indian Food for Dinner at Chakra
If you are looking for a hearty and authentic meal in Kingston Upon Thames, grab Indian food for dinner at Chakra. Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka, and Lamb Rojan Josh hit the spot after our long walk back from Teddington.
Chakra is situated right along the Thames and sports views of historic Kingston Bridge.
15. Drink a Gin and Tonic at Chadwick's House of Zoology
We wandered past Chadwick's House of Zoology, noticed what appeared to be three storeys of forest growing inside and just had to go in. Most people were upstairs where we were told they serve "theatrical" drinks.
We stayed downstairs where they serve an extensive menu of gin and tonics and other cocktails. We loved having the place to ourselves. We absolutely loved the Red Admiral made with hazelnut bourbon and a surprise chocolate truffle.
I can't resist an extensive gin menu with recommended pours. I opted for Portobello Road Gin with London Essence Pomelo and Pink Pepper Tonic.
We absolutely loved Chadwick's House of Zoology! It's the perfect place for a mid-week workcation cocktail in South West London.
16. Take a London Workcation Coffee Walk
One of our favorite things to do on a workcation is explore local coffee shops on a morning walk. We really appreciated the opportunity to get an early start to explore a place like Kingston and have it all to ourselves.
Beanberry Coffee became our go-to place for coffee during our week in Kingston. On one visit we had a well-crafted oat latte and tried two different espresso beans: JavaScript and Wildcat.
The next time we opted for V60 drip coffee. We tried the 8am Blues seasonal blend and a single-origin Ethiopian brew.
Beanberry proved to be great fuel for our walks! We picked up a flat white and some beans to take home on the final day of our workcation.
On one of our other morning walks in Kingston Upon Thames, we stopped for coffee at Forunella Cafe.
We paired a respectable cappuccino with a pan au chocolat from Olivier's Bakery at the Kingston Ancient Market.
Coffee in hand, keep an eye out for cool mosaic street art under the train bridges in Kingston. Alternatively, take a stunning morning walk on a sunny day along the Thames in Canbury Gardens in Kingston.
We loved the life-like reflections in the water and a surprising number of swans in flight. Swans are so elegant in the water yet so awkward in the air!
17. Sample English Rose
One of the great things about a workcation is that you can stock the kitchen and try some local specialties. We finished one of our workdays with *gasp* an English wine.
A rose from Aldi caught my eye because of the pink door on the bottle (my regular readers know how much I love door photography , especially Dublin door photography ).
It turns out that this particular English Rose was a respectable offering! I would definitely buy it again.
18. Spend the Day at Hampton Court Palace
We started with a tour of Henry VIII's kitchen. The audio guide tour of Hampton Court Palace is free and really well done. Transport yourself back to the Tudor era and imagine what it took to put food on the King's table.
We got acquainted with Henry VIII and the fascinating tales of his six wives by touring his royal apartments.
It is rumored that the palace is haunted by Catherine Howard, Henry VIII's 5th wife who tried to escape her date with the executioner by running and screaming through the halls.
We especially enjoyed exploring Georgian history at Hampton Court Palace. Things I learned: when Queen Anne died in 1714 without an heir to the throne, England had to scramble to find a successor.
Many of Anne's closest relatives were Catholic so in the end Georg of Hanover in Germany became England's King George I.
We ended up touring Hampton Court Palace a bit out of order. Next up, the 17th century State Apartments of William and Mary.
We admired sumptuous decorations that escalated the deeper you went into their chambers. The State Apartments of William and Mary also featured an impressive and artistic display of arms.
It was fascinating to hear a different perspective about the "Glorious Revolution" in which William defeated then King James to take the throne.
Learn about the other side of the story at the Battle of the Boyne site in Ireland which can easily be combined with a weekend in Carlingford .
Hampton Court Palace is also known for its extensive and fabulous gardens. We checked out the coiffed trees, fountain, and long canal.
You may even catch a glimpse of the deer descended from Henry VIII's hunting herd. The Wilderness at Hampton Court Palace is indeed wild and covered with daffodils in March.
You can also check out the kitchen garden en route to the Tiltyard Cafe at Hampton Court Palace. Keep an eye out for hidden sculptures.
There is also a hedge maze at Hampton Court Palace. We decided to pass on it since it was overrun with school groups when we visited.
The Privy Garden at Hampton Court Palace was for the exclusive use of the monarch and their family. Today, you can wander freely. We really appreciated the great views and golden light in the afternoon.
There are a number of formal art galleries featuring works from the royal collection at Hampton Court Palace. Don't miss the Mantegna Gallery (accessible from the Privy Garden) with its collection of Roman sculptures and paintings dating back 500 years and covering the Triumphs of Cesar.
19. Take a Break at Little H at Molesey Lock
We took a break from exploring Hampton Court Palace to get coffee in the sun at Little H at Molesey Lock along the Thames Path.
There is a cafe at Hampton Court Palace, but Little H seemed like a much nicer option. A cappuccino and goat's cheese and apricot toastie enjoyed in the sun was just what we needed.
Walk through Hampton Court Village on your way back from Molesey lock. The village is just a block or two square but I found it to be incredibly picturesque.
20. Drink and Eat Your Way from Hampton Court to Kingston
We took the bus from Kingston to Hampton Court Palace (1.65 GBP with Oyster Card) but decided to walk back with a few pitstops on the way.
We grabbed a pint of Guinness to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in an idyllic setting at Ye Olde Swan in Thames Ditton.
Next up? We stopped for a surprisingly fun Plumble 11 cocktail (pink gin, Fernet Branca, Cocchi Rosa, strawberry, lemon, and plum bitters) served over crushed ice in a bright blue Roman head sipped on the Thames at Hideaway in Surbiton.
We finished the day with a Happy Hour Cocktail (blood orange and grapefruit gintonica) and dinner of fish and chips and a plant-based burger at Hart's Boatyard.
After dinner, we followed the Queen's Promenade back to Kingston. Without breaks, it would take about an hour and fifteen minutes to walk from Hampton Court Palace back to Kingston.
The food and drink breaks really made it more feasible for us. We logged over 20,000 steps for the day!
21. Have Coffee and Cake on Kew Green
Kew is a quaint South West London town. Take the bus from Kingston to Kew and enjoy coffee and cake at Sift. The place is pretty tiny.
There were just a couple of benches outside on a very trafficky street. We drank our coffee and ate our snack outside historic St. Anne's Church on Kew Green instead. Such a lovely spot!
22. Spend the Day at Kew Gardens
Another top tourist attraction in South West London is Kew Gardens. Did you know that The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew is one of 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in London?
We spent the day at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Enter via Elizabeth Gate on the Northeast corner of the gardens. The cost to enter Kew Gardens is 19.50 GBP per person if you book a timed ticket online in advance.
First stop? Bright orange Kew Palace and the Queen's Garden. We discovered very cool displays of blooms at Davies Alpine House at Kew Gardens.
Check out The Hive at Kew Gardens, a modern art installation that mimics the vibratory communication of bees.
One of the top things to do in Kew Gardens is tour iconic Palm House, a Victorian-era greenhouse. I loved the spiral staircase that allows visitors to get a bird's-eye view of the plants on display.
We discovered 10 different climate zones to explore in the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens. The orchids on display were particularly lovely.
Temperate House at Kew Gardens is the largest Victorian greenhouse still standing in the world and was recently refurbished.
Explore rare and exotic plants from around the world. Climb the spiral staircase for fantastic views both inside and out.
The Marianne North Gallery at Kew Gardens is an absolute must see. No photos allowed inside, but prepare to be dazzled by ~1000 oil paintings featuring flora and fauna from Ms North's travels around the world in the 19th century. Absolutely spectacular!
We caught a glimpse of the Pagoda at Kew Gardens and then ducked out of the Lion's Gate. From here the train station in Richmond is about 1 km away.
23. Get Lost in Richmond
We decided to walk from Kew Gardens to Richmond and take some time to explore this lovely South West London town. An adorable laneway caught my eye in Richmond which led me on a detour.
If not for this diversion, we likely would have missed out on our next stop... Time for craft beer and an afternoon snack at Tap Tavern Richmond.
We sampled lovely and surprisingly light calamari plus bread and vegetables with beetroot and pea hummus.
We took a little time to walk around and admire the magnificent Spring magnolias in Richmond before catching the bus back to Teddington for our dinner reservation.
24. Go Upscale for Dinner at One One Four in Teddington
Our time in London was drawing to a close. We decided to finish our trip with an upscale dinner at One One Four in Teddington.
The two (35 GBP) or three course (42 GBP) prix fixe at One One Four comes with focaccia, an amuse bouche (mini arancini ball), and a mini cocktail. I opted for a Gin and Tonic instead of wine with dinner.
The gin menu at One One Four was quite extensive. No slim line tonic though, buy hey, it was a special occasion so I just went with it.
We enjoyed a tuna tartare starter, cod and duck breast mains followed by a mini cheesecake pre-dessert at One One Four in Teddington. This was followed by an absolutely fabulous chocolate marquise and then petit fours with the bill.
Such a fantastic meal in Teddington to finish off our workcation trip to South West London!

One of the best things about living in Kingston upon Thames is its beautiful scenery. First constructed by wood in 1219, Kingston Bridge has been renovated numerous times over the centuries and now stands as a strategic crossing point between the town and Hampton Court Park.
A walk along this iconic bridge is well-worth the visit and makes for a superb instagrammable snapshot with your friends or family whilst they’re visiting.
9. Experience an afternoon at the golf course…
If you’re looking or the chance to get involved with some local sports, why not try visiting Coombe Wood Golf Club ? Founded in 1904, this parkland was originally developed into a 9-hole golf course which was later made to 18 holes in 1922.
You will find whatever the season, the green remains perfectly intact all year round. Whether you’re experienced or just a beginner, this course is sure to challenge you.
You can also enjoy some seasonal offers for enjoying lunch at their on-site bar after a round of golf has tired you out.

Perfect for students looking to browse for some hidden gems, or picking up some food ingredients, this market will be your new haven for last-minute pickups. During December you can get in the festive spirit with it turning into a Christmas Market, with stalls housed in beautiful wooden cabins for you and your friends and family to enjoy.

This posh neighbourhood has been named London’s best place to live right now
Apparently it embodies ‘all that’s best about life in London’
It’s a dispute that will never truly be settled. North versus south, east versus west – Londoners are steadfast in their opinion of what part of the city is the best to live in. We’ll unashamedly spend hours over a pint fighting about where has the best pubs , the coolest vibes , the nicest green spaces and the best value for money.
Now, the Sunday Times has weighed in on the debate. In its list of the 72 best places to live across the UK for 2024, the newspaper included seven London neighbourhoods and chose an overall winner for the region. And the victor for 2024 was... Clerkenwell, home to the likes of Exmouth Market and Sadler’s Wells theatre.
The Times said of the area: ‘From a rich past of riot and ribaldry to its present status at the heart of the capital’s culinary and creative scenes, Clerkenwell embodies all that’s best about life in London.’
To make sure that they really were picking the best of the best, judges travelled to each and every location on this year's round-up and spoke to locals themselves. Areas were ranked based on stuff like schools, transport, access to nature, the health of their high street and their community feel.
Tim Palmer, one of the judges, said: ‘Different people may be looking for different things, but what all our best places have in common is that people love living in them and are proud to call them home.’
Clerkenwell took the title from last year’s winner Crouch End , which still managed to claim a spot this year for cramming ‘an astonishing number of shops, cafés and restaurants into its compact centre enclosed by handsome Victorian and Edwardian houses’.
London Fields was another neighbourhood to feature, referred to as ‘haute Hackney’, and Little Venice made the cut for calm strolls along the canal, colourful narrowboats and attractive (supremely expensive) mansions. Let's look at the full list of the Sunday Times best places to live in London for 2024:
- Crouch End (Winner)
- Forest Hill
- Highams Park
- Little Venice
- London Fields
- Wimbledon Village

The place is a refurbishment by Kingston Council of a run down piece of brownscape and is today a lovely place to visit. It is well laid out, has lots of seating, flowers, greenery and is an excellent place to take children. There is a cafe on the corner of the garden. Well done Kingston Corporation.
