Great Rail Journeys launches luggage service

Great Rail Journeys claims it is the UK’s first escorted group rail holiday operator to introduce a door-to-door luggage service included in the tour price.

The new service is in its Europe, UK & Cruising by Rail Preview Edition 2020 brochure, which features 59 rail holidays and 28 cruises by rail.

All 2020 European tours starting at London’s St Pancras station will offer the service, as well as selected UK tours.

It was developed after customer feedback show holidaymakers did not want to worry about carrying larger suitcases

For 2020, each room offers one 25kg bag to be picked up from and delivered back to the customer’s home, allowing holidaymakers to travel light

Lindsay Dixon, head of trade sales, said: “We are really excited to present a more inclusive offering for customers with our new luggage service.”

Also new for 2020 are headsets on all guided European city tours, revamped excursions and early booking offers of up to £150 per booking.

Very positive experience making a phone booking.

Very easy to make a phone booking. All our questions about luggage were answered and advice about booking hotels and rail journeys before and after our trip was given - we have booked for June 2025 so it is too early to book rail tickets. We were given a rough idea of when our outgoing train might be leaving St.Pancras International and told we would to be there an hour beforehand.

Norway to Rhone

We have already enjoyed holidays with GRJ around the world and we have always been treated well. The booking process is a pleasure as there is always time to share experiences and memories and advice is freely and generously given. On this occasion Lynn was helpful regarding the quality and experiences of this holiday and I enjoyed our conversation. At no time was I coerced into something that I did not require..indeed she actually was able to offer some help/advice on a holiday which we take with GRJ in a few months. We were advised of an extra discount on our 2025 which we had not been aware of and we can now sit back and look forward to this holiday which coincides with the month of our 60th wedding anniversary. Thanks Lynn and GRJ

Booked the holiday on line which was straightforward. Confirmation email came through immediately but noticed an error with the departure date on page 2 of the confirmation letter. Spoke to Ollie who didn’t know why there was an error but I did suggest he spoke to someone about getting it changed (it was mainly a standard template so everyone would get the same letter with the same error). I logged onto the My Booking on the website which is great, I could amend my cabin number and enter passport details.

Happy that we got the last two spaces

Luckily for us Thomas was very patient and was able to update the tour we were enquiring about to say there was only two spaces left, which is exactly what we wanted to hear! He confirmed everything and was able to hold for a couple of days, but we only needed one day to decide to book this adventure. Very helpful Thomas, thank you.

A transfer service lost my luggage worth over £3,000

Gill Charlton has been fighting for Telegraph readers and solving their travel problems for more than 30 years, winning refunds, righting wrongs and suggesting solutions.

Here is this week’s question:

Over Christmas, my partner and I travelled to Switzerland on Great Rail Journeys’ (GRJ) Classic Glacier Express tour. This included the option of a luggage transfer service provided by Sherpr which subcontracts to FedEx.

On Jan 3, we left one suitcase at the hotel to be taken back to the UK. FedEx notified us on pick-up with a tracking number and said it would arrive by Jan 8. This did not happen.

When FedEx and Sherpr failed to find the case, I asked GRJ, as my tour operator and responsible for the actions of its agents, to find out what had happened.

On Jan 26, Sherpr declared our luggage was lost . GRJ offered us £500 in compensation, a fraction of the inventoried contents which total £3,167.

I have argued that, under the Package Holiday Regulations 2018, GRJ is liable for our loss because of its agent’s lack of care. It has now offered £1,200, as a goodwill gesture, to set against the cost of our next trip to the Harz Mountains. However, we are still out of pocket. Can you advise on our rights?

– Christine Chapman

Dear Christine,

While the Package Holiday Regulations do say that the tour organiser is liable to pay compensation for financial loss caused by the actions of its suppliers, this liability is not unlimited.

GRJ’s terms and conditions come into play too. These say that if it is liable for the loss of a customer’s luggage, the maximum it has to pay out is the greater of (a) the excess on your insurance policy or (b) the amount payable by the supplier under its own terms and conditions. In your case this is £500.

I understand that you are not keen to claim on your bank’s travel insurance policy because you feel it might give it a reason not to continue to insure you. But I think that a supported lost luggage claim will not affect future cover and this is the best way to secure the maximum compensation. Your bank will pay you up to £1,500 each, less a £75 excess.

I checked the position with ABTA –  GRJ is a member and subject to its Code of Conduct. Its spokesman told me that customers are expected to make an initial claim on their travel insurance before claiming any excess charge or shortfall from their tour operator.

Christine’s story has a happy ending. On Feb 9, FedEx appeared on the doorstep with her suitcase. It was a bit battered, had been opened and the contents rifled through, but nothing had been taken. When she notified GRJ, it said it was happy to refund the £500 for the inconvenience or offer a £750 discount on her next tour, which she has accepted.

Your travel problems solved

Gill takes on a different case each week – so please send your problems to her for consideration at [email protected]. Please give your full name and, if your dispute is with a travel company, your address, telephone number and any booking reference. Gill can’t answer every question, but she will help where she can and all emails are acknowledged.

It’s safe to say that Switzerland isn’t short of iconic rail journeys – however, there’s a new kid on the block in the form of the GoldenPass Express. A hundred years in the planning, this amazing new route travels through the gorgeous Swiss Highlands from the glamorous lakeside resort of Montreux to the alpine town of Interlaken.

We travelled on the Interlaken & Jungfrau Express Tour. The tour was well managed with our excellent guide Ros. Nothing was too much trouble.

First time we've gone with grj (traditional glacier express). the experience was totally positive - great locations and hotels and our tour guide was brilliant., the glacier express holiday itself was nothing short of outstanding. the planned itinerary was tremendous. i recommend this grj holiday to anyone., well organised and clearly the company had put a lot of detailed planning into the tour. certainly would recommend the glacier express tour., the pinnacle of perfection.
