“Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. In September, John announced makeup dates for the tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic. The rescheduled trek runs from January through April. The newly announced final dates include 30 stadium shows, with a run of performances in Europe from May to June before he heads to North America. Tickets to those dates sold out quickly but there are seats available through VividSeats.com .

To all my friends down under: We’ll be seeing you, too. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in your town.”

Elton John preformed to over 6 million fans across 330 shows in his farewell tour.

With glitz, glam and golden confetti, Elton John performed on tour for the last time on Saturday.

The final concert was set in Stockholm, Sweden. It wrapped up the British singer's "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, which spanned over five years, 330 shows and 16 Gucci suits. The tour is considered the highest-grossing in Billboard Boxscore history. Last month, it became the first tour ever to make more than $900 million.

"What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it," John wrote on Instagram before the show.

The show included several of John's signature songs, including Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and Candle in the Wind.

In heart-shaped pink sunglasses, he thanked his fans for their support throughout the decades.

"You have no idea what it means to me, your kindness. I've had the most wonderful career," he said. "How lucky am I to play music. But I wouldn't be sitting here and talking to you if it wasn't for you."

The worldwide, farewell tour kicked off in 2018, but was forced to pause in 2020 for nearly two-years due to the pandemic. Last month, the 76-year-old gave his final U.K. performance while headlining the Glastonbury Festival.

In 2021, the international pop star told NPR that he looked forward to retiring from tour so that he could spend more time with his children.

"Ten years ago, I was going to just tour and make records. And I had nothing planned for the rest of my life except making music and touring," John said. "And then we had two fabulous little boys. And then David, my husband, said, well, what do you want out of life now? Do you still want to tour? I said, no, I don't."

He later said, "As much as I love playing, I want to be with my boys now. I want to be there for them."

Elton John

Three and a half years after Elton John announced his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour,” after an unavoidable pandemic delay, he has finally unveiled the closing stadium dates of that tour. It will make a final lap across Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand next year after the conclusion of the arena dates rescheduled from 2020 . The rescheduled 2020 dates begin in Germany on Sept. 1 and cover North America from January to April 2022.

The final stretch will kick off on May 27, 2022 in Germany, then move to North America, beginning in Philadelphia in July, and will wrap in November with a pair of dates at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, the site of an iconic Elton performance some 47 years earlier. 2023 kicks off with two shows in Auckland New Zealand on January 27 and 28, followed by soon-to-be-announced dates in Australia before the tour formally concludes there later that year. The tour will end nearly five years after its opening date in Allentown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 2018.

The full list of newly announced dates is below; see the rescheduled 2020 dates here .

Announcing the final dates, Elton John said, “Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. I’m coming to you today with an announcement I’ve been working towards for, well, all my life: the shows that I announce today will be my final tour dates ever in North America and Europe. I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career. Whether it’s next summer in Frankfurt or at the legendary Dodger Stadium for the grand finale in the United States, I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time. This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows. To all my friends down under, We’ll be seeing you too. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in your town.”

The show is a crowd-pleasing tour de force of his biggest hits, designed to tug at the audience’s heartstrings as well as Elton’s own. Variety , reviewing the tour’s 70th show in New York in March of 2019, wrote: “He drops in enough deep cuts to keep the musicians and veteran fans on their toes (the second song he played was the 1973 deep cut “All the Girls Love Alice”), yet the set was so packed with hits that he’d reeled off “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” “Border Song” and “Philadelphia Freedom” in the first half hour, and he’d barely scraped the surface.”

While this may be his final tour, it seems unlikely that it marks the end of Elton’s career as a performer — an irrepressible showman and die-hard music fan (who manages to host a remarkably contemporary weekly radio show , with an emphasis on new artists, on Apple Music 1), he will probably play spot dates and make television and other appearances for as long as he feels able.

For the US, Canada and UK dates, American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public. Presale details are included in the tour routing below.

Public on-sales begin Tuesday, June 29 in Europe and Wednesday, June 30 in North America.

Ahead of the stadium run, Elton will mark his return to the stage this Fall in Europe on September 1 at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, then later to North America on January 19, 2022 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.

Elton John announces last-ever UK tour dates as he extends farewell

As well as an extra six European and 20 North American concerts, the pop singer will play five UK stadiums in June 2022

In what is becoming one of the longest goodbyes in pop history, Elton John has extended his final Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour with a series of dates around the UK, Europe and North America.

In June 2022, he will perform at football stadiums in Norwich, Liverpool, Sunderland, Bristol and Swansea, adding to the 25 UK and Ireland arena tour dates that are scheduled for late 2021. The stadium shows are currently set to be his last ever tour dates in the UK.

There are also six newly announced stadium concerts across Europe, and 20 in North America. He will conclude the latter run with two nights at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, site of two famous nights in October 1975 where he performed to more than 100,000 people in a glittering baseball outfit.

Elton, 74, said: “I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career … This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows.”

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was announced in 2018 , with Elton saying: “It’s time to come off the road so I can fully embrace the next important chapter of my life. I need to dedicate more time to raising my children.”

Its run of more than 300 shows was originally scheduled to end at London’s O2 Arena in December 2020. Many of those dates were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and also added to – the tour is now scheduled to finish up with two dates in Auckland in January 2023.

The tour has made a brief stop in the UK already, playing Hove and Cardiff in June 2019. In a five-star review , the Guardian said of the Hove concert: “He plays for nearly three hours, energy constantly high, finishing almost every song by getting off his piano stool and gesturing ‘Come on!’ at the audience like a Watford striker who just delivered a 30-yard screamer.”

Elton John begins final US dates of farewell tour with set list surprises and singalongs

dates of elton john farewell tour

PHILADELPHIA – Goodbyes can be brutal. But Elton John continues to usher out his extraordinary career  with grace and enthusiasm while ensuring fans savor a spate of highlights from his colossal catalog.

At Citizens Bank Park on Friday, a beaming John and his legendary band emerged before the sunset, and more than two hours and 23 songs later, the first date of the final U.S. leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was a footnote in history.

The show also marked the launch of the stadium portion of the tour, which will wrap in Los Angeles in November before bouncing back to Europe for the concluding run. It feels like another lifetime ago that John embarked on his long and winding goodbye ; indeed, the world looked much different in 2018 when the show made its debut in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

But he’s still enticing baby boomer devotees and millennial newcomers alike, a refreshing span of ages evident among the sold-out crowd of more than 40,000.

During the encore, John noted – with a bit of humble disbelief – that he was playing a recent hit , “Cold Cold Heart,” his mashup with Dua Lipa (who appeared on video), in tandem with his first top 10 single from 1971, the truly timeless “Your Song.”

It’s a feat both admirable and exceedingly unlikely to be duplicated.

'Love' The Beatles? Consider catching their Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas while you can

Throughout the night, John, in a bejeweled white tux jacket, black pants and lavender-framed glasses, appeared refreshed and happy behind his black Yamaha grand piano. The hit parade began with the familiar plinking notes of “Bennie and the Jets” followed by “Philadelphia Freedom,” with guitarist Davey Johnstone casually unfurling the song’s jangly riff.

80 for 80: Ranking some of the best Paul McCartney songs for his birthday

John, 75, was delightfully hammy between songs, popping up from his piano bench to point and grin at the crowd while mouthing thanks and leading a concert that felt brisk but never rote.

While some songs (“I’m Still Standing,” “Tiny Dancer”) contained noticeably lower keys to suit John’s range, he mostly sounded robust, adding vocal embellishments to the end of an easy-swinging “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” and injecting “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” with emphatic emotion.

The highlights along this trip down sentimental street were numerous. The hazy effects on the video accompanying the ever-ethereal “Rocket Man” added a gauzy coating as the dreamy chorus segued into an elongated piano coda. “Levon,” one of the underrated beauties in John’s cache of creativity with lyricist Bernie Taupin , escalated into a gospel throwdown before weaving back into the melody. And the epic instrumental “Funeral for a Friend,” a sonic eruption that melts into “Love Lies Bleeding,” remains a master class in musicianship.

Though John’s teammates never earned a moniker a la the E Street Band, these exceptional players have been an integral part of his live shows. Many, such as dapper drummer Nigel Olsson (sporting his trademark gloves, headphones and a pink pocket square in his suit), the treasure that is percussionist Ray Cooper and the distinctive Johnstone have shared stages with the maestro since the earliest gigs.

Percussionist John Mahon, keyboardist Kim Bullard and bassist Matt Bissonette also add musical flair that prompted John to comment on how much he has relished playing with this group.

Concert review: The Weeknd tour is an apocalyptic rave

While their tautness was expected given the volume of shows they’ve played, the band also leaned into a couple of surprises in the set list.

The rollicking “All the Girls Love Alice,” from 1973’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” album, arrived for the first time this year (John did unearth the album track during many pre-pandemic farewell dates). But more unexpected was the tour debut of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” John’s swoony 1972 ode to New York City that he hasn’t performed live since his 2018 Las Vegas run. It was, as always, enchanting.

As the concert crept toward its conclusion – with fans realizing the wind down of their time in John’s orbit – the musician offered sincere thanks and told the audience to “love each other” while wishing them “health, happiness and success.”

Then, as he has throughout the tour, John unwrapped “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” his delicate rumination of life in transition and the ideal summary of a career that will be forever celebrated.

Ahead of the stadium run, Elton will mark his return to the stage this Fall in Europe on September 1 at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, then later to North America on January 19, 2022 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.

Sum 41 Reveals Final Dates of Farewell Tour

The pop-punkers of Sum 41 are heading home to wrap-up their final tour in Canada.

The “Fat Lip” singers announced earlier this year they’ll be embarking on their final-ever world headlining tour, dubbed “Tour of the Setting Sum.” The run is set to kick-off on March 1 in Jakarta, Indonesia. From there, they’ll head to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Mexico before heading to the U.S., stopping in cities like Boston, New York City, Nashville, Denver, Orlando, and Los Angeles.

Now, they’ve dropped their final leg of the tour, kicking-off in Victoria, British Columbia on January 10. They’ll cross the country, making stops in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and London, visiting venues along the way like Place Bell in Laval, the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon, and Vancouver’s Rogers Arena before wrapping-up with a two-night gig at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. PUP and gob will provide support.

“We’re coming home for the FINAL dates of the Tour of The Setting Sum,” the band said in a statement. “That’s right, the last Sum 41 shows will be all across Canada, ending with two nights in Toronto on Jan 28 and January 30.”

Tickets for the newly-announced dates are available for presale on Tuesday, March 26 at 10 a.m. with the code LANDMINES, followed by a general on sale Friday, March 28 at 10 a.m. via Sum 41’s official website .

After 27 years together, Sum 41 announced they would be breaking-up earlier this year. Throughout their career, the group cemented a spot in the rock scene, releasing seven studio albums and selling over 15 million records worldwide. They’re known for blending pop-punk with melodic hardcore, nu metal, and even rap elements. Tracks like “Still Waiting,” “In Too Deep,” and “The Hell Song” will go down as staples in rock history.

Elton John turns 77 — his 10 best songs

Happy birthday, Elton John ! The iconic singer turned 77 years old today.

After 31 solo studio albums, five collaboration albums, and several soundtrack albums, it’s an appropriate time to look back at his back catalog. John has released some iconic hits like “Your Song” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” that are still relevant in pop culture decades after they came out.

So, without further ado, here are his 10 best songs ever.

Honorable mentions: “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”; “Candle in the Wind”; “Sacrifice”; “Sad Songs (Say So Much)

“I’m Gonna Love Me Again” (Rocketman Soundtrack)

It’s hard to believe that over a half-century into his career, John is still capable of putting out bangers. His original song for the Rocketman soundtrack, “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” is a beautiful message about self-love. It’s perfect for the film and John’s own life, making it one of the best and most personal songs he’s written.

“The Bitch Is Back” (Caribou)

One of John’s signature live songs, “The Bitch Is Back” is one of his finest upbeat songs. While John is known for his melodic ballads, he is also a rockstar.

From the opening guitar riff to John’s repeated announcement that the “bitch is back,” the song is pretty much perfect. There

“I’m Still Standing” (Too Low for Zero)

Elton John’s biopic, Rocketman, added new meaning to one of his older songs. “I’m Still Standing’s” message is quite clear — John himself is still going.

But seeing his addictions depicted in his biopic reframed the song. Not only is John still a titan of the music industry, he is a survivor of addiction. Say what you want about him, John cleaned up his act in a major way. And we’re all better for it.

And that Rocketman arrangement is quite good. Before it kicks into the familiar arrangement from John’s Too Low for Zero, Taron Egerton sings a slower version that eventually morphs into the iconic song (with a pretty killer recreation of the music video).

With age, the song has gained new meaning. “I’m Still Standing” is one of John’s most poignant songs written at a very important time in his life and career.

“Bennie and the Jets” (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)

Everybody knows the iconic piano notes that open “Bennie and the Jets.” They are striking and were the perfect opener to John’s live concerts on the “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour.

While there isn’t some significant deeper meaning to the song, “Bennie and the Jets” remains a classic from John’s catalog.

“Tiny Dancer” (Madman Across the Water)

Once again, everyone knows “Tiny Dancer” from John’s iconic opening arpeggios to the chorus.

The best part of “Tiny Dancer” is that it’s a slow build. There is no rush by writers Bernie Taupin and John alike to get to the chorus. It’s one of the best ballads ever and one widely associated with John (and for good reason!).

“Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)

Another rock and roll song, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” is another classic. The fast-paced rhythm of the verses to “Saturday Night’s” is a stark reminder of John’s rockstar capabilities.

It’s a rock ballad that sounds like it’s from the Rolling Stones. And yet, John’s voice makes it distinctly his own. It’s another song that soars when played live thanks to its tempo and fun lyrics. To date, this is John’s best drinking song.

“Crocodile Rock” (Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player)

“Crocodile Rock” may be the silliest song John has written. There really is no substance to the song. It feels like it was written to be played in a live setting.

And to that end, it’s a masterpiece. There wouldn’t be any masterclasses taught on the composition of “Crocodile Rock,” but it remains an extremely fun live song.

Very few bands have a signature song that can get everyone moving and grooving like “Crocodile Rock” does. When John played it on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, it captured the attention of everyone in attendance. It was like they were in a trance, singing the “la, la, la, la, la” refrains in unison.

I’m sure John got tired of playing the song live — it’s not an especially challenging song to play. But I give him credit for putting up with it for decades for the betterment of his live concerts.

“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” (Caribou)

Another slow burn, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” is another John classic. Yes, the George Michael version is great, but John’s original is untouchable.

The angelic-like backing vocals in the choruses are powerful. John and Taupin really do some of their finest work on this song.

Above all else, the song’s horn arrangement that backs John and the backup singers is what differentiates it from others. Yes, I’m sure some of John’s other songs have used them before, but “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” has an epic feel to it. It’s similar to what John did with the Lion King soundtrack years later.

“Rocket Man” (Honky Chateau)

Another one of John’s signature songs, “Rocket Man” is a ballad about a lonely man stuck in space. Is this written as a metaphor for John’s leap to stardom? It’s possible.

Either way, it remains one of his signature songs, and it’s well-deserved. It’s fitting that a song about a man in space has the same epic scope as a sci-fi film.

“Your Song” (Elton John)

“Your Song” very well may be the greatest love song written. There’s an earnestness and innocence in “Your Song” that’s terribly missed in modern pop music.

“It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside/I’m not one of those who can easily hide/I don’t have much money, but, boy. if I did/I’d buy a big house where we both could live,” John sings in the first verse.

As the song progresses, the background strings arrangement comes in louder. It brings together a beautiful song that reaches its crescendo when John belts out one final, “I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind” refrain.

Tammy Faye Heads to Broadway! Elton John and Jake Shears' Divine Musical to Debut This Fall

Olivier Award winner Katie Brayben and Tony nominee Andrew Rannells will reprise their roles from the acclaimed London production

Dave Quinn is a Senior Editor for PEOPLE. He has been working at the brand since 2016, and is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book, Not All Diamonds and Rosé: The Inside Story of the Real Housewives from the People Who Lived It.

Tammy Faye Messner will sing again, this time in a new Broadway musical set to open this fall.

The life of the late American evangelist is the subject of Tammy Faye , a new musical with music from legendary songwriter Elton John and lyrics by Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears .

Performances begin Oct. 19 ahead of a Nov. 14 opening night at the legendary Palace Theatre in New York City. It'll be the first Broadway musical to play the space since its renovation.

Katie Brayben and Andrew Rannells will lead the musical as Tammy Faye and her ex-husband, Jim Bakker, respectably. Both earned Olivier Award nominations when they originated the roles when Tammy Faye made its debut at the Almeida Theatre in London in Fall 2022, with Brayben winning the trophy.

David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images

Tammy Faye is billed as "the story of a traveling preacher’s wife who beamed into homes with a message of hope... and stole the country’s heart."

"It's the 1970s, and for the very first time, satellites are bringing cable television into American homes," the show's description reads. "As families gather in their living rooms, young preacher Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye hit the airwaves to build a nationwide congregation and put the fun back in faith. But while Tammy dazzles on screen, rivals plot behind the scenes, jealous of her popularity and threatened by her determination to lead with love."

Featuring a book by James Graham with direction by Rupert Goold and choreography by Lynne Page, Tammy Faye hopes to "shine a sparkling light on the generous, loving, often lonely soul behind the illustrious lashes."

Messner was known for her eccentric personality and glamorous persona, which differentiated her from many of the mainstream evangelists at the time. She was also more liberal than her contemporaries, advocating for members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially during the height of the AIDS epidemic.

She and Bakker married in 1961 and began their ministry the following year. They'd go on to become founding members of The 700 Club and host of number of popular shows themselves, including The PTL Club (Praise The Lord), which eventually blossomed into its own network.

The pair divorced in 1992, three years after Bakker was sentenced to prison for numerous counts of fraud and conspiracy. She went on to marry property developer Roe Messner in 1993, who himself had his own run-ins with the law and would serve 27 months in prison for bankruptcy fraud.

After an 11-year journey with colon cancer, Tammy Fay died on July 20, 2007 at the age of 65. Both Bakker and Messner are still alive.

Tammy Faye is not the first time her story has been brought back into the spotlight. A number of musicals have been developed about her over the years, including one that never got produced starring Kristin Chenoweth.

In 2021,  Jessica Chastain  and  Andrew Garfield  starred in  The Eyes of Tammy Faye , a film based on the popular 2000 documentary of the same name. Chastain would go on to win  Best Actress at the 94th Oscars  for her portrayal of Tammy Faye.

Meanwhile, John and Shears have a long history on in the theater themselves.

This is the sixth major musical John has composed, after The Lion King , Aida , Billy Elliot, Lestat and The Devil Wears Prada. Both The Lion King and Billy Elliot went on to win the Tony Award for best musical.

Shears' first musical, Tales of the City , went into production at the American Conservatory Theater in 2010. He later starred as Charlie Price in Kinky Boots on Broadway and at the Hollywood Bowl. The 45-year-old recently made his West End acting debut as the Emcee in the acclaimed revival of Cabaret , which opens on Broadway this spring.

Tickets for Tammy Faye go on sale Wednesday, March 27. For more information, visit the show's official website .

Elton John’s Farewell Tour Comes to an End With $939 Million and 6 Million Tickets

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour wrapped on Saturday, July 8, extending its lead as the highest-grossing tour of all time.

  • By Eric Frankenberg

Eric Frankenberg

Elton John

The time has come: Elton John ’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road played its final show on Saturday, July 8. Almost five years after launching, the tour grossed $939.1 million and sold 6 million tickets according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.

What Would A Truly Green Music Festival Look Like?

After claiming the title of the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history earlier this year, John extended his lead with 49 arena dates in Europe, following an arena run in the Spring of 2019 and a sweep of stadiums last year. There were four North American stints, also volleying between arenas and stadiums, plus two blocks of shows in Oceania.

After all of those shows, all around the world, John made it to the top of the heap. Watch below as, from September 2018 to July 2023, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour surpassed the biggest tours ever on its way to No. 1.

John has been patient, ranking among the biggest acts on various Boxscore charts since 2018. Starting that year , he was No. 22 on the year-end Top Tours chart, then No. 4 in 2019 , No. 1 in 2020 , and returned in 2022 at No. 2. In between, he was No. 1 on midyear charts for 2019 and 2020 , and then No. 2 in 2022 and 2023 .

John has also been the king of Billboard ’s monthly Top Tours chart. He crowned the inaugural list for February 2019 and returned to the top six more times, each time extending his lead for the most months on top. He was No. 2 another eight times, plus five months between Nos. 3-5.

In all, that’s 20 months in the top five of 27 total appearances. Charts for June and July haven’t yet been published, though John will likely score his 28th and 29th appearances when they do.

John’s world tour divides its 330 shows (one of those, his set at Glastonbury Festival, does not factor into his gross or attendance since it’s a multi-artist festival) into 183 in North America, 101 in Europe and 46 in Oceania. See below for how his grosses in each continent stacked on top of one another, combining to more than $930 million.

North America – specifically mainland U.S. and Canada – was the most fruitful region for John’s farewell tour, amounting to $567.7 million and 3.5 million tickets. That’s 61% of the world tour’s total gross. Europe comes next with $218 million and 1.5 million tickets, followed by Australia and New Zealand, combining for $134 million and 889,000 tickets.

When Ed Sheeran set his record and wrapped The Divide Tour in August 2019, John’s tour had only grossed $217.8 million from its first 108 shows. With less than a third of Sheeran’s gross, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour was too young to be among predictions for all-time challengers. Plus, the tour had stuck to arenas, limiting its potential ceiling. It wasn’t until May 2022 that John stretched to stadiums.

The arena portion of John’s tour ended last spring, when it had already grossed $488.7 million from 219 shows. In the 61 stadium dates that followed, he added $341.5 million. All said, the stadium portion amounts to just 19% of all Farewell shows, but 36% of its earnings.

After breaking Sheeran’s record, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour became the first concert tour to gross $800 million and then $900 million.

Further, John’s final shows further extend his lead as the highest-grossing and best-selling soloist in Boxscore history. Over 1,623 reported shows, he’s grossed $1.98 billion and sold 20.6 million tickets. Farewell tours haven’t always actually been a final farewell, but if this is it, John is ending his historic touring career comfortably on top.
