Why you should take a Trollfjord cruise in Lofoten

A woman in a yellow jacket standing on the deck of a ship on the Silent Trollfjord Cruise

The picturesque Trollfjord is one of the most famous fjords in the Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway. Combining pristine blue waters, steep rock walls, jagged mountain peaks and waterfalls, it’s a prime example of Norway’s stunning natural beauty.

As the fjord is hidden between mountains without any roads leading to it, the best way to visit it is to take a Trollfjord cruise. The cruises allow you to get a close look at this beautiful yet secluded fjord and its fairytale-like natural setting.

On my recent Norway campervan trip , I had the opportunity to take a Silent Trollfjord Cruise onboard a modern eco-friendly boat. I really enjoyed the whole experience and wanted to share it with you to inspire you to visit Trollfjord as well!

A woman standing on a ship looking at a small waterfall surrounded by green vegetation on a Trollfjord cruise in Lofoten

In this blog post, I will cover what you can expect on a Trollfjord cruise, which tour options there are and why I believe that taking the Silent Trollfjord Cruise is the best option to experience this iconic fjord.

I am also sharing my discount code for the Silent Trollfjord Cruise, which you can use to save a bit of money if you decide to book this tour.

Disclaimer: Brim Explorer hosted me on this tour but as always, all opinions are my own.

Information about Trollfjord in Lofoten

Trollfjord is located in the Raftsundet strait, northeast of the town of Svolvær, which is the capital of the Lofoten Islands. With its towering cliffs, dreamy waterfalls and mountain views, the fjord is renowned for its spectacular scenery and is a fantastic addition to any Lofoten itinerary .

The fjord is 72m (236 ft) deep and is nestled between three large mountains – Trolltindan (1,084m/3,556 ft), Blåfjell (998m/3,274 ft) and Litlkorsnestinden (980m/3,215 ft).

What makes Trollfjord unique is its very narrow opening. The mouth of the fjord is only 100 meters (330 ft) wide and is surrounded by steep mountains rising vertically from the sea. It’s hard to imagine how the cruise ships visiting this place can actually fit into the fjord!

Steep rock walls at the opening of Trollfjord, one of the most famous fjords in Lofoten

The fjord itself is quite short – only 2.5km (1.5 mi) long – but what it lacks in size, it definitely makes up for in beauty!

According to a Norse legend, Trollfjord was created when a giant Troll fell and accidentally hit his axe into a mountain. As a result, the mountain split into two and created a valley which then filled up with water from the sea. And that’s how Trollfjord was born.

How to get to Trollfjord, Norway

The most common way to get to Trollfjord is by boat. All the Trollfjord boat tours depart from the harbor of Svolvær. It’s also possible to hike to Trollfjord along a 10km (6.2 mi) trail over very rough terrain but it’s certainly not a very popular option.

In terms of getting to Trollfjord by boat, there are four different alternatives to choose from:

  • A Silent Trollfjord Cruise on a hybrid-electric boat
  • A sea eagle safari on a RIB boat
  • A tour on a sailing boat
  • A tour on a Hurtigruten cruise ship

We opted for the Silent Trollfjord Cruise offered by Brim Explorer and I will explain why in the next section.

In a hurry and ready to book? My Brim Explorer promo code ‘smoothescape’ will give you 5% discount on any of their tours .

Why we chose the Silent Trollfjord Cruise

Before our Lofoten trip, I was doing research on the various types of boat tours to Trollfjord and when I came across the silent cruise on Brim Explorer’s hybrid-electric boat, I instantly knew that this was the right option for us.

One of the biggest reasons why we wanted to do our cruise with Brim Explorer was their strong focus on sustainability, animal welfare and environmental protection.

Thanks to innovative technology and design, Brim Explorer has created an eco-friendly cruise experience without compromising on comfort. Their tours are carried out on modern hybrid-electric catamarans which are run on electric engines as much as possible in order to minimise the impact on the environment.

Reflections of sky on the large panoramic windows of Brim Explorer boat cruising through Lofoten

Because of the electric engines, not only are their cruises much lower in emissions but they are also silent. This way there’s minimal disturbance to wildlife and it also gives the guests a relaxing way to enjoy nature with almost no noise.

Another thing I love about Brim Explorer is the fact that they don’t feed wildlife on their Trollfjord tours (unlike some of the other tour companies). Ethical wildlife tourism is a topic that’s close to my heart and I was happy to see that Brim Explorer doesn’t support the harmful practice of feeding wild animals.

A woman in a yellow jacket using binoculars to spot sea eagles on a Trollfjord tour in Norway

Finally, as the weather in Lofoten can be quite unpredictable, we wanted to choose a tour where we would be comfortable in case the weather took a turn for the worse.

On the RIB boat tour, you’d be completely exposed to the weather the entire time and have no place to hide from the wind or rain. On the Brim Explorer boat, however, you can sit in heated lounge areas and still enjoy panoramic views of the scenery through large floor-to-ceiling windows.

DISCOUNT CODE: If the Silent Trollfjord Cruise sounds like something you would like to experience as well, you can use my Brim Explorer promo code ‘smoothescape’ to get 5% off when you book your tour on their website .

You can also use the code when booking Brim Explorer’s other boat tours in Norway, such as their whale-watching or Northern Lights cruise in Tromsø, their wildlife and glaciers cruise in Svalbard or their various cruises in Oslo.

What to expect on the Silent Trollfjord Cruise in Norway

The Trollfjord boat tour departs from Svolvær harbor. As you exit the harbor, you will have a lovely view of the waterfront area of the town of Svolvær and its mountainous backdrop as well as the Fiskerkona (Fisherman’s Wife) statue that has been standing here for decades.

From there, the boat will head towards Trollfjorden along the Raftsundet strait. Over the next 1.5 hours or so, you can sit back and enjoy the views as you cruise past the dramatic landscapes of Lofoten. The scenery here truly looks like something out of a painting – jagged mountain peaks, green meadows, traditional wooden huts and shimmering blue sea.

Along the way, your guides will share their stories and knowledge about the local culture, history and nature.

vivid turquoise sea and dramatic coastal mountains on the Lofoten Islands

You’ll also pass by a group of small islets where it’s common to see white-tailed eagles . As soon as the crew spots any eagles, they will let you know so that you could get a look at these majestic creatures as well. If you want to use binoculars, they are available free of charge on the boat.

We got to see about 5 sea eagles but they were unfortunately too far for a good photo. If you’re lucky, you might also see some seals or porpoises (dolphin-like marine mammals) during the tour.

A woman gazing at the mountainous landscapes on a Silent Trollfjord Cruise in Norway

Finally, you’ll arrive at Trollfjord. As the boat enters the fjord through its narrow opening, it feels like you can almost touch the walls of the fjord.

The ship then silently glides towards the end of Trollfjord, where you can see several mountain peaks around the fjord, some of which are covered with snow even in the middle of the summer. Before exiting the fjord, the ship will pass by a beautiful waterfall gently trickling down the mountainside.

Vertical rock walls rising out of the sea at the mouth of Trollfjord, Lofoten

If the conditions allow, on the way back towards Svolvær, the crew will launch the ship’s underwater drone to give you a glimpse of the world below the surface of the sea. You’ll be able to watch the live drone footage showcasing kelp forests, various fish and sea urchins living in these arctic waters.

RELATED POST: We also did a fantastic whale watching tour with Brim Explorer in Tromsø in the winter. Read my blog post about our Silent Whale Watching experience to find out what to expect on that tour.

The boat used on Brim Explorer’s Silent Trollfjord Cruise from Svolvær is a modern and comfortable catamaran with a hybrid-electric engine. This allows Brim Explorer to offer an eco-friendly cruise experience with minimal pollution and disturbance to marine life.

On its two floors, the boat has both open-air decks and heated indoor lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows offering unobstructed views of the landscape outside. The boat also has a cafe where you can purchase various drinks, warm meals, sandwiches and pastries. We tried their cinnamon buns and they were heavenly!

There’s also free tap water, toilets and Wi-Fi onboard.

What to bring to the cruise

Regardless of the season you’re visiting Trollfjord, you should wear warm clothes. It can get quite chilly out on the sea even in the summer when the weather otherwise seems sunny and warm.

I did the tour in the middle of July and I was happy that I had my fleece, long pants, a windproof-jacket and a hat. If you’re visiting during the colder months, bring even warmer layers as well as gloves and warm shoes.

Also, remember to bring your camera to capture these magnificent landscapes and some money to enjoy the food and drinks onboard.

And there you have it – my detailed guide to taking the Trollfjord cruise in Norway. I hope this article inspired you to add this boat trip to your Lofoten to-do list and that you’ll have an amazing time there!

Trollfjord Cruise in Lofoten

Enjoy a scenic boat cruise from Svolvær to Trollfjorden. A modern twist on a classic Lofoten adventure – explore majestic peaks and stunning nature in complete silence on a hybrid-electric vessel.

The Trollfjord is, despite its name, a short fjord (2 km), but famous for its dramatic history and surrounding landscape. It was the scene of a dramatic battle between the first steam-powered fishing ships and the traditional open-boat fishermen, in 1890.

Tour description

Departing from Svolvær harbor in the morning, we set out for the fascinating Trollfjord. Our friendly crew will share their knowledge about the wildlife, landscape, and history of the resilient communities that live in this epic coastal landscape.

We’ll spend some time in Trollfjord, exploring as, above us, white-tailed eagles soar against the backdrop of steep mountains. Onboard you can purchase warm drinks, alcoholic beverages, warm lunch, sandwiches, and pastry while enjoying the views.

RIB Safari Lofoten – An Epic Ocean Experience

If you want to see Lofoten, one of the best vantage points is from the water. If you book a RIB or sea safari in Lofoten, you are assured of a nature-based experience you will long remember.

Do you want to feel the wind in your hair and a ticklish feeling in your stomach, while being surrounded by chalk-white beaches and sharply pointed mountain peaks? If you enjoy that tickling sensation, we recommend going on a safari around the Lofoten Islands in a rigid inflatable boat (RIB).

If you are one of those who prefer things to be a bit calmer, you may enjoy seeing Lofoten from the deck of a sailboat or while enjoying the silence of an electric catamaran.

Regardless of your preferred vessel, there are a variety of options to choose between. Below is a complete overview of exciting ways to experience the Lofoten Island – from the water.

RIB safaris in Lofoten

Experiencing Lofoten by RIB enables you to learn a lot about the nature, wildlife and settlement in Lofoten while getting lots of fresh sea air. Not a bad combo, is it?

Abandoned fishing villages, countless small islands and skerries, abundant bird colonies and perhaps the chances are high that you will see a white-tailed eagle or 10. This is but a sample of what you can expect to see on a RIB safari.

Remember to bring your camera!

However, there are alternatives for those who want slightly more comfort and slightly less speed. Several activity providers offer sea safaris on sailboats where the action on the boat is almost – and only almost – as important as what is happening around you.

After all, there is nothing wrong with the idea of enjoying the beautiful view from the deck of a majestic sailboat while enjoying a delicious meal! Several companies offer dinner cruises – a sensory experience for both your taste buds and your eyes.

Boat trips to enchanting trollfjord.

It’s hard to imagine any places in Lofoten that are unsuitable for a sea safari or RIB trip. However, some places are more popular than others, such as Henningsvær, Skrova, the Reinefjord, Røst and Værøy .

One of the best-known places for sea safaris is Trollfjord , a narrow fjord with an idyllic location between 1,000 m high mountains that plunge straight into pristine Arctic waters. Barely 100 m wide at its narrowest point, the Trollfjord is one of the most spectacular sights in Lofoten, if not in the whole of Norway.

For generations, the Trollfjord has been a popular destination for emperors and tourists alike. Click here to read more about the fascinating history of the Trollfjord.

You can experience the Trollfjord on most seagoing means of transport such as RIB, sailing boats and electric catamarans. Even the Hurtigruten can fit in this famous, narrow fjord between the high mountains.

The charter boats have been transporting people in the fjords of Lofoten for the longest time and are a popular choice for many. They have space for many passengers and offer daily trips to the Trollfjord in the summer. These trips offer a close-up experience with the majestic white-tailed eagle and other seabirds, while fish soup is served for lunch on most of the boats. If you require a shuttle service for a larger group, this can be booked in advance and adapted to suit your needs and wishes.

Frequently asked questions, what should you wear when heading out on the lofoten sea.

If you go on an organised RIB trip, most activity providers offer flotation suits. These are waterproof and windproof, and you can wear them over your clothes. It’s possible to rent extra clothes in several places, if necessary. Wear clothes suitable for the prevailing weather and remember to bring warm shoes, mittens or gloves and a hat. If you are going out in an open boat, we recommend wearing an inner layer of wool and a scarf or neck warmer.

Where are the best places to go on a RIB and sea safari in Lofoten?

As mentioned, Henningsvær, Skrova, Reinefjorden, Røst, Værøy and of course Trollfjord are all wonderful places to go on boat trips in the Lofoten Islands.

Trollfjord Cruise

A Trollfjord Cruise from Svolvær

We depart from Svolvaer, our hometown in Lofoten. Our destination is the magnificent Trollfjord. It is only accessible by boat or a 10km hike across the mountains. On our way out of the harbour, we will pass by the “Fiskerkona” (the Fisherman’s Wife statue) that has waved goodbye and welcomed back the fishermen of Lofoten for decades. Our guides will share their stories and information about nature, history and local culture along the way.

Trollfjord Cruise

Explore wildlife above and below the fjord

At the start of Raftsundet, we will if conditions allow deploy our sub-water drone to explore the world under the surface of the water in Norway’s fjords. Waving through the kelp forests or scouring the seabed, we hope to encounter some of the fish that have been the lifeline and income for the communities like Svolvær and has made Lofoten famous.

While we continue through the strait of Rafsundet, the views will gradually get more and more impressive. Keep your eyes peeled, as this is also where we are likely to first start seeing White-tailed eagles. We will pass by dotted houses along the way with some surprising typical Norwegian history that our guides will share.

Trollfjord Cruise

Silence and serenity in Trollfjord

Trollfjord has long been a highlight of a visit to Lofoten and with good reason. The opening of Trollfjord is only 100m wide with mountains of over 1000m on the side of the fjord going straight down deep into the fjord. Once through the narrow 1 km opening, Trollfjord opens up in a cul-de-sac and you get rewarded with lush green views 360 degrees around.

In Trollfjord you can join our guide outside. They will put down their microphone and guide in person to enhance the serenity. We’re in eagles paradise so keep an eye out in the sky. Our guides will talk and share stories about the nature, history, wildlife and trolls of trollfjorden. We’ll pass by the waterfall before we turn back towards Svolvær. On the way back our café will be opened for lunch.

The origin of the name trollfjord.

It is unknown where the name “Trollfjord” originated, but there are legends and stories both fictional and other. One legend says that Trollfjord used to be a lake named “Trollsjoen”. A troll name Hinnøy was angry with another trolls cows were grazing on his fields around the lake. Running over with his axe, he tripped, and the axe flew out and landed in between the lake and raftsundet. When taking out the axe, the lake connected with Raftsundet, creating what we now know as Trollfjord.

Regardless or the origin of the name, Trollfjord seems an appropriate name for the impressive and overwhelming feeling one gets upon entering the fjord. Magnificent, impressive and a little frightening as you cruise in Trollfjord below the towering mountains that are threatening overhead and plunge deep into the fjord. It is certainly one of the most impressive fjords of Norway.

White-tailed eagles; the wildlife highlight of Trollfjord

What white-tailed eagles in trollfjord look like.

The white-tailed eagles are commonly seen on our Trollfjord Cruise. They are the largest eagle in Europe. They measure anywhere from 66 to 94 cm (26 to 37 inch) in total length with a typical wingspan of 1.78 to 2.45 m (5.10 – 8 feet). You can easily identify a white-tailed eagle by its, surprise, white tail. Juveniles are harder to distinguish as their tails are not (completely) white yet. They are also known as “sea eagles” as they feed primarily on fish. They are also known to attack livestock such as sheep and goats, which nearly caused humans to eradicate them from Lofoten.

The history of white-tailed eagle hunting in Lofoten

Lofoten used to have a large population of white-tailed eagle (and golden eagles). Sadly, the population is now only a fraction of what it was. The main reason for this is ‘eagle hunting’. It was accepted for farmers and others to hunt and kill the eagles as they formed a threat for their livestock. As early as 1655 eagle hunting was recorded in Lofoten. In particular because of the unusual catching technique; by hand. In 1845 the government even paid people for each kill and between then and 1968 when the law was abolished, an estimated 114.000 eagles are believed to have been killed in Norway.

Nowadays, the pendulum has swung the other side and white-tailed eagles are a tourist attraction. It is now a common practice to feed the eagles in Trollfjord to get them to come close, a practice we believe is not appropriate and something we have decided not to partake in.

Frequently asked questions about the Silent Trollfjord Cruise

How long is the trollfjord cruise.

The Silent Trollfjord Cruise is between 3.5-4 hours long. It depends a little on the wind and current and the size of the group. While it would be possible to do the tour quicker, we have chosen to do a slower tour where we have time to experience and take in our surroundings, the wildlife and nature.

Is it common to see sea eagles on the Trollfjord Cruise?

It is quite common to see white-tailed eagles on the Trollfjord Cruise, we can not guarantee that we will see them. That said, the eagles are known to be in certain areas (also on the way to Trollfjord). The main difference from tour to tour is how many eagles we see, and how close up they get to the boat.

What happens if it is raining all day?

Our boat is designed with warm indoor saloons and panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows so that even on rainy days you will be able to have a good view. On rainy days we often have low hanging clouds in Trollfjorden that give an eery and dramatic feeling to the fjord.

Our Trollfjord Cruise will continue rain or shine. If the weather conditions are unsafe, we will cancel our tour and offer you to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Is the Trollfjord Cruise suitable for families?

Our Trollfjord Cruise is one of the most family-friendly ways to experience Trollfjord. Not only do we offer reduced rates for children and youth, our ship is safe and comfortable for kids to walk around. Our windows are floor-to-ceiling so that even the smallest amongst us can see outside. Our underwater drone is an experience that children usually are really excited about.

Is there lunch available on the Trollfjord Cruise?

We have a café on board where you can order food & drinks. You can pre-order lunch with your ticket, or order something while on board. There is a variety of warm lunch, sandwiches and other snacks available.

Is there a minimum number of participants for the tour?

Yes, we have a minimum of 8 guests for our tours. We always strive to do a tour on every day within the season, but sometimes there are too few people booked. In these cases, it is both financially but also ecologically unsustainable to do a tour with our ship. When this happens we will always offer you to reschedule your tour to another day if possible, or we provide you with a full refund.

Deep Sea Lofoten Fishing Trip

Traditional fishing trip from svolvær.

Joh. E. Paulsens gt. 9, 8300 Svolvær, Norge

15 minutes before departure

January - December

Fishing in Lofoten is an important tradition with strong links to the Norwegian way of living. The jagged mountains and the unique nature create a dramatic scene for this fishing trip that takes place on board our authentic fishing cutter, MS Symra.

An experienced crew will teach you how to fish like a real fisherman, including how to gut the fish. Your hard earned catch is of course yours to take home.

Fishing in Lofoten varies greatly depending on the season, and during the traditional Lofoten fishing season, which lasts from late February to April, we focus on catching the Skrei cod.During the summer season, you can catch pollock, haddock, mackerel and coastal cod among others.

Our fishing tour includes deep-sea fishing using traditional hand-cranked reels on board an authentic fishing vessel. MS Symra is what you envision when you think of a traditional fishing boat, and it actually celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. It’s a comfortable boat designed specifically for Lofoten fishing. It’s a heritage-protected vessel, certified to carry 38 passengers.

We set sail from Svolvær, passing by the iconic Fisherman’s Wife statue, and head to the fishing grounds that our experienced crew knows can yield a good catch based on the season and time of year. During the trip, our crew will provide you with excellent guidance, sharing stories and insights about Lofoten fishing alongside the actual fishing experience.

There are 10 fishing spots on board, so our guests should be prepared to share their fishing spot with other anglers on this trip. However, no worries – you’re likely to be satisfied with your catch before we head back to the harbor.

It’s not guaranteed that you will catch fish, but the crew on board MS Symra will do their best to find good fishing spots. The boat trip itself is a truly special experience for anyone fond of nature and photography.

No trips at the Lofoten Sea are ever the same!
