Shannon Cain Photography

If you and your partner love visiting new places together, or if it seems like both of you have a never-ending case of wanderlust, then a travel-themed wedding makes total sense for you when it's time to start planning your big day. Luckily, there are plenty of travel theme wedding ideas you can use to incorporate your love of exploration and adventure into your wedding decor. Whether you're into backpacking, glamorous getaways, or something in between, these ideas will help jumpstart your travel-themed wedding vision board.

What is a travel-themed wedding?

The travel-themed wedding style tends to be a mixture of  boho and whimsical aesthetics , with the ultimate goal of creating an ambience that's both welcoming and eclectic—most importantly, it should be full of your personality and love of travel! Popular decor accents for a travel theme include things like globes, vintage suitcases, postcards, airplane motifs, stamps, and maps. Bright  wedding colors  are an easy way to give your travel-themed wedding a boost of fun, so we suggest choosing eye-catching colors like yellow, blue, red, fuchsia, and turquoise.

Passport wedding invitations

We love this alternative invitation idea if you're having a destination wedding. Work with your wedding stationer to create a themed stationery booklet that looks like a passport—you can include all of the important  wedding invitation details , along with helpful travel tips for your guests.

Comfortable wedding attire

Practical attire is especially important if your travel-themed wedding is taking place in an unexpected locale, like at the top of a mountain. Skip the fancy gowns, tuxedos, and footwear in favor of clothes that make it easy to move around (hiking boots optional!) and are appropriate for your venue.

Engraved compass wedding gift

Watches are a popular wedding day gift to give your spouse, but for a travel wedding theme, why not surprise your S.O. with a personalized compass instead? This one has a sweet engraved message on the back that reads, "So you can always find your way back home."

Airplane hangar wedding venue

Don't hesitate to think outside the box when it comes to your travel-themed wedding venue. Unique transportation-inspired venues, like airplane hangars, aviation museums, and train stations, will add an extra-memorable element to your special day.

How to Plan a Travel-Themed Wedding

Here’s what you need to know to pull off this concept.

Travel is an important part of many relationships. Whether it’s a life-changing trip, like getting engaged on top of a mountain in Switzerland, or more regular, smaller-scale couple getaways, like visiting a nearby beach town every summer, traveling helps strengthen a connection through shared experiences and priceless memories. If exploring different places is one of your mutual hobbies or passions, you might be looking for ways to incorporate this pastime into your big day. Enter: A travel-themed wedding.

While throwing a destination wedding is a seamless way to enact this theme, you don’t necessarily have to jet overseas to make this aesthetic a reality. By instigating this design concept, you can transport guests to any thrilling destination—even if you’ve opted for a local celebration. With this theme, you can focus your nuptials around a medley of travel sites or a singular location that you want to share with your guests. Or you can simply integrate details and designs related to the act of traveling, like globes and suitcases, to highlight your hobby. Whichever route you decide to take, this central idea is guaranteed to make your event more meaningful and memorable for everyone in attendance.

  • Nancy Park is the co-owner and principal planner of So Happi Together , a wedding planning and design firm that specializes in destination weddings.
  • Laura Ritchie is the principal designer and stylist at Grit & Grace , which is located in Washington D.C. She’s been working in the wedding space for 15 years.

If you think travel-related elements will help you tell your love story, we’ve created an expert-approved guide to executing this vision. Ahead, everything you need to know about planning a travel-themed wedding, from the venue to the entertainment.

Whether you’re making it official overseas or staying put in your neighborhood, there are so many different wedding venues to choose from for your travel-themed wedding. Below, some suggestions from the experts.

Destination Weddings

Since travel-focused nuptials spotlight the excitement and joy of traveling, a popular place to bring this theme to life is via a destination outside of your town. “This gives you the chance to show your family and friends some of your favorite spots in an exotic place you like to visit,” planner Sophie Mae of Stylish Details Events says. If the setting of your event is integral to establishing this theme—and your budget and schedule allow for it—then saying “I do” at a far-off location is a possibility. Planner Nancy Park of So Happi Together recommends selecting a spot that is meaningful to you, like where you took your first trip together as a couple or a bucket-list site that you’ve always dreamt of exploring. The world is your oyster—you can choose virtually any place that you have a connection to (or a desire to see), whether it’s Lake Como or Antigua.

Local Weddings

If a destination wedding isn’t feasible for you or your guests, it’s more than possible to pull off a travel-themed celebration at a nearby locale—that doesn’t require any traveling at all. Whether you settle on a hotel ballroom or your own backyard, you can still set the scene by integrating travel-like décor. Another option is opting for a venue that captures the essence of travel, like an airport tarmac.

The Invitations

Before your guests even set foot in your locale, your wedding invitations will introduce everyone to your travel-inspired theme. One out-of-the-box idea is relaying all of the details about your upcoming nuptials on a postcard, complete with a photo of you and your partner on vacation (bonus points if it’s at your venue).

If you’re sticking with traditional invitations, you can use the design of your paper goods to reference your aesthetic: A painted illustration of your destination or travel-inspired motifs, like suitcases and compasses, will set the scene. Along with your invitations and RSVP cards, planner Laura Ritchie of Grit & Grace suggests rounding off your suite with a map, highlighting some of your favorite spots around your venue—or even around the world. Once you seal everything in an envelope, Mae advises adding postage stamps from various travel locations.

The Decorations

One of the best ways to execute a travel-themed wedding—especially if your affair is local—is through decorations that nod to your love of traveling. This might look like passport booklets for ceremony programs, a globe that everyone signs for your guest book, luggage tags for your escort cards , or framed photos of you and your partner in some of your favorite travel destinations for table numbers. You can also stack suitcases at the foot of your head table or work compasses into your runner. Park recommends incorporating more indirect elements, like artisan goods, flowers, patterns, and colors, that remind you of a certain place and allude to your love of travel.

The Dress Code

From your outfit to the overall dress code, there are plenty of attire options for a travel-themed wedding, which we explore below.

If your travel-themed wedding is taking place in a far-flung destination, consider wearing a garment created by a designer in that area. For local affairs, you can still choose an outfit from an artisan who’s based in one of your favorite travel spots. Your accessories are another seamless way to infuse your passion for traveling into your attire. For instance, pair your ensemble with a bracelet or a brooch that you bought from a boutique on vacation there.

Destination or themed weddings naturally offer couples more leeway when it comes to their dress code , so you can rethink the classic black-tie option. Some ideas are festive attire for a beachside bash in Tulum or all-black attire for an Italian villa venue. Regardless of your decision, Park advises sharing details about how your loved ones should dress for the location, climate, and season, like if packing extra layers or wearing a certain pair of shoes is needed.

The Food and Drinks

For your hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and dishes, consider recreating some of your favorites from your travels, like an Aperol spritz in Italy, ratatouille in France, or flan in Spain. The goal is to share that special moment with your friends and family, so there’s no need to worry about serving crowd-pleasers. “Don’t shy away from local cuisine or delicacies that could seem a little more funky than meat and potatoes,” Ritchie says. “This is the time to have your guests experience what you love about this location, and it’s OK to offer something out of the box.” If you can’t choose just one region, Mae suggests working with your caterer to create a menu filled with dishes from around the world. Then, deck out your display with travel motifs, like compass drink stirrers, cocktail napkins embossed with a map, or an airplane cake topper.

The Activities

To make your big day even more memorable, incorporate activities and entertainment that represent your jet-setting lifestyle. This could be a photo booth with props from different countries or a game of travel-themed trivia. Music is another way to reference your travels. If you’re throwing a destination wedding, Park suggests hiring local musicians . “Immersive artist experiences that reflect the destination are always fun and unique and leave quite the impression for guests,” she says.

What is a Travel Theme?

A travel-themed wedding is perfect for couples who love the idea of travel. Whether it is a broad travel theme, or a specific location that you are taking inspiration from, this wedding theme is a great option for those who are always looking forward to the next trip they are taking.

Some brides will choose to have a broad “travel” theme with no specific location they are traveling to. This theme has a lot of room for creative decorative elements and is definitely unique. Travel themes can work well for brides who are drawn to rustic weddings, but you want more specific themed elements tied in.

Another great option is to celebrate the countries that you and your partner are from on your travel themed wedding day. If you would really love to have your wedding at your home country but you are unable to afford a destination wedding, a travel theme can open the doors to tying cultural elements into your special day.

Travel Wedding Cake Designs - Handpainted Wedding Cakes

travel inspired wedding cakes

Well summer sure flew by in an instant, didn't it? It seems to have gone by so fast that I barely had time to keep you updated on the goings on at My Daughter's Cakes. So for the next few blog posts I'll share with you some of our beautiful cake designs from the past few months.

One of the cake decorating techniques that is very popular is hand painting. Hand painted cakes are beautiful and add an interesting dimension to a cake design. Even though paint is, in some respects, 'flat' against the cake, there is slight texture. Hand painting is also a great way to express your individuality as a couple, and a way to incorporate your personal interests into your wedding cake.

Lucia and Hanna love to travel and their perfect wedding cake incorporated their love of traveling around the world. Their wedding style incorporated some whimsy along with a bit of soft vintage and rustic touches. The pale taupe and soft moss tones were perfect for their theme. A very small touch of rose gold in the monogram added a lil' something special. We thought it would be so cute to have the airplane treads encircle their monogram - just a further nod to where their love will take them in life! Of course, the quickie and grainy cell phone shot before delivery does absolutely no justice to this cake. You need to check out the professional photograph below to really appreciate the cake and style of our gorgeous and adventurous couple!

We delivered this beauty to The Barrow House in Clifton, New Jersey. This was our second time delivering to that restaurant. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating. I haven't had an opportunity to eat there yet, but if the scents coming from the kitchen are any indication then I need to get there soon!

Are you looking to incorporate some of your personal interests into your wedding cake? I'd love to show you how to do that! Let's start that conversation here!

Wedding Cake Experts Reveal the Biggest New Trends — from Maximalist Designs to Sheet Cakes (Exclusive)

As more couples prioritize and splurge on their wedding cakes, some exciting trends are emerging

Erin Clack is a Staff Editor for PEOPLE. She has been writing about fashion, parenting and pop culture for more than 15 years.

When it comes to wedding cakes , brides and grooms are going big — from the scale of their confections to the cost.

According to some of the country's most in-demand wedding cake makers, a growing number of couples are prioritizing their cakes and are more willing to splurge on a special, show-stopping centerpiece for their reception.

"Couples are putting emphasis on this historically traditional but sometimes overlooked detail and using it as an opportunity to make it an ultimate expression of their personalities," Kelly Gray of Kelly Gray Cakes tells PEOPLE. "It is the perfect element to not only make the whole event cohesive but to also take risks in design to showcase their individualism."

Kyra Bussanich, founder of Lake Oswego, Oregon-based Kyra's Bake Shop , tells PEOPLE the shift comes after several years of couples opting for elopements or small, intimate weddings necessitated by the pandemic and a desire for more personal celebrations. For these nuptials, "a simple, symbolic cutting cake" sufficed.

"Now, there's a palpable shift back towards grandeur and extravagance in weddings, manifesting in significantly larger dessert budgets. The average budget for a wedding cake has astonishingly more than quadrupled in the past three years," says Bussanich, a four-time champion of Food Network 's Cupcake Wars .

She explains that brides and grooms are not only allocating more of their wedding budget to their cake, they're also regarding it as an opportunity to showcase their unique story as a couple.

"This isn't just about splurging on a cake; it's about investing in a unique, tailor-made experience that reflects the couple's personality, tastes and love story," Bussanich says. "Whether it's through elaborate cake designs, exotic flavors or innovative presentations, couples are seeking to make a statement with their wedding cake."

As wedding cakes take the spotlight, some exciting new trends have emerged — from maximalist to vintage designs. Here is a look at the inspirations behind today's confectionery creations.

Gina Territo

To add a little dramatic flair to their cakes, couples are choosing to incorporate visually striking textures that range from simple stencil patterns to more abstract elements resembling waves, tree bark, flower petals and more.

"These artistic touches not only create a visual spectacle but also mirror the unique tastes and stories of each couple," Bussanich says, explaining that stencils in particular offer "endless possibilities" for customization.

"From the intricate delicacy of floral patterns to the boldness of geometric shapes, stencils allow couples to infuse their cakes with personal significance or thematic elements," she notes.

Allie Lasso

Pressed Flowers

While flowers have long been a popular wedding cake adornment, a new trend involves decorating with colorful pressed blooms, either fresh, dried or made from sugar.

"Pressed flowers are a sweet way to add an organic, whimsical feel to your wedding cake," notes Gray. "I like to make my own version of a pressed flower out of sugar — it's a delicate touch that creates gorgeous texture and movement to the cake as well as a way to weave color into your design."

Eric Kelley Photography

Simple, understated cake designs are making way for grander, more over-the-top cakes — the bigger the better.

"These towering creations, often featuring many tiers that soar majestically, offer more servings than the number of guests, symbolizing abundance and generosity," says Bussanich, noting the cakes are not only big in scale but decorated with lots of lavish details — including edible gold leaf, gilding, layers of textures and stenciled designs, bold splashes of color, and flowers and other tactile elements.

"These cakes are not just desserts; they're masterpieces of culinary art, designed to be as memorable and unique as the celebration itself," the baker adds.

Melody Root

Vintage Charm

Bussanich says there is a growing interest in cake designs that hark back to previous decades or even centuries.

In addition to retro color pairings, such as pink and green, this trend has sparked the comeback of Lambeth piping, a classic English tradition of over-piping icing to create elaborate ruffles, scrolls, garlands, pearls and more. (Royal watchers will recognize the technique from Princess William and Kate Middleton 's wedding cake.)

"Thanks to shows like Bridgerton that highlight the lavishness of the Golden Era, this vintage-inspired technique, known for its intricate frills, ruffles and swags, is experiencing a renaissance in modern celebrations," Bussanich says.

"Lambeth piped cakes stand out for their meticulous decoration," she adds. "We're seeing a beautiful spectrum of color palettes that cater to every couple's thematic vision."

Sheet Cakes

While tiered wedding cakes have long been traditional, more couples are opting for sheet cakes for their nuptials.

"Sheet cakes are the casual fun cousin of the poised, grand wedding cake," says Gray, who has worked with celebrities including Lily Collins and Derek Hough .

"If done with fun intricate piping and cute inscriptions, they can find their way to the spotlight, earning the right to be displayed at your dessert table," she continues. "I’m a fan of them, and they are perfect for the low-key 'anti-bride' looking to do something a little less traditional."

Kyra Bussanich

Why settle for just one wedding cake when you can have an array of cakes? The trend of mini cakes allows couples to offer their guests a more exciting dessert experience, Bussanich says.

"Instead of a larger stacked cake, some couples are choosing a spread-out arrangement of smaller, individual cakes, each with its own unique design and flavor," she explains. "Each table gets its own exquisite cake, making the dining experience more intimate and personalized for guests. This setup is also a great ice breaker at tables and encourages conversation and admiration, as guests can appreciate the intricate details and creativity of the cakes up close."

Along with a mini cakes spread, interactive dessert displays — featuring everything from mini hand pies and bite-size doughnuts to brownies and sugar cookies — are increasingly popular. "It adds an element of fun and exploration to the dining experience by encouraging guests to move around, interact and personalize their dessert course," Bussanich notes.

Amy and Stuart Photography

Custom Flavors

If you can dream it, you can have it on your wedding day. Custom cake flavors are increasingly popular — and Grays says the ideas are as unique as the couples.

"I love creating a brand new flavor combination that no one has ever done before. It’s such a special touch for the reception to help my clients personalities shine," she says, noting that she likes to give her clients an in-depth questionnaire to fill out to help her craft their custom flavors.

"Two of my favorite flavor creations have been a White Chocolate Huckleberry Lavender Cake for Derek and Hayley Hough and a Tres Leches Mantequilla Cake with Peach Puree for Arielle Vanderberg and Matt Cutshall."

Jeremy Chou Photography

Virtual Cake Tastings

Not only are cake designs changing, but cake tastings are too. Instead of visiting a bakery to sample flavors ahead of their big day, couples can have the cake sent straight to them for virtual tastings. The baker ships the cake samples, allowing the bride and groom to taste them at home and then jump on a Zoom call to discuss their choices with the baker.

"It’s a very practical option for brides with destination weddings," Gray explains. "It’s also a great excuse for couples to throw a tasting party at their own home, inviting family and friends who would not otherwise be able to be involved with that process of their wedding."

2. Prague cake

travel inspired wedding cakes

One of the main desserts in the Soviet Union, Prague cake was created by confectioners at Moscow’s legendary Prague Restaurant. The cake consists of three chocolate wafers soaked in apricot jam, chocolate cream based on condensed milk, and a thick layer of chocolate glaze. Not too much chocolate, then.

1. Ptichye Moloko (Bird’s Milk)

travel inspired wedding cakes

The pinnacle of culinary art and the favorite cake of Russians of all ages since 1978. It consists of two layers of delicate sponge cake, two layers of airy milk soufflé, and a thin glaze of night-dark chocolate. It is said to have taken Vladimir Guralnik, chief confectioner at (where else) Prague Restaurant, half a year to develop the ideal recipe, which only a select handful of immortals are able to reverse-engineer. Maybe you’re one of them?

Couple who found pearl inside clam, turned it into engagement ring discuss wedding journey

R hode Island lovebirds who found a pearl inside a clam and turned it into an engagement ring are one step closer to lifelong bliss, they shared with USA TODAY.

Ken Steinkamp and Sandy Sikorski live in Westerly, Rhode Island and on December 27, 2021, they grabbed clams at Bridge Restaurant, which is now closed.

Sikorski was eating one of the clams when she tasted something a bit off. It turned out to be a pearl and a year-and-a-half later, the couple turned the pearl into an engagement ring.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Their story made its rounds online and in multiple news outlets, turning them into celebrities of sorts.

The pair said sometimes people see her ring and bring up the story of how they found the pearl.

“I am surprised every single time somebody says ‘I know about this ring,’” Sikorski said. “It’s hard to go unnoticed because it's white and people are looking for a diamond. “

Now, the couple has secured a venue and plans to tie the knot on April 14.

Read more to find out what the couple has been up to and how they’re tying their previous find into their nuptials.

Read more on the couple: She found a pearl inside of a clam. Now, it's her engagement ring.

Ceremony will be intimate at a Rhode Island resort

Steinkamp, 75, and Sikorski, 70, will wed at Avondale Chapel, then have their reception at Ocean House, a resort a few miles away in Watch Hill.

They opted for a small ceremony due to costs and family circumstances.

“We chose a small wedding because of the age we are and I don’t think we have 200 friends that could ever get here,” the groom said.

They spotted the chapel where they’ll say “I do” as they were headed out for their nightly drive, he said. They drive each night and watch the sunset. Off on this side road lies Avondale Chapel. It was built in the 1800s.

“It’s very cute and very small,” Steinkamp said.

They decided to tie the ocean and the chapel into their wedding plans and now, they’re all set to have a boutique ceremony with about 27 people.

Boutique weddings are in right now, said Hannah Bontempo, the catering and sales manager at Ocean House who is helping the couple make their wedding happen. They are typically smaller in size and made up of about 30 or fewer guests.

“It's a smaller event, so it's not a giant ballroom,” she said. “It's not a giant tent. It's not like a crazy, long, drawn out ceremony. It's more intimate. It's more designed to be for the couple and for their love and their story.”

Making pearls a part of the festivities

The couple plans to have pearls around the base of their wedding cake. The bride will also wear pearl earrings and her granddaughter, Nora, will be a junior bridesmaid and have pearls on her shoes.

They had a wedding cake tasting on March 2 at Ocean House, where Chef Jessica Quiet prepared a chocolate clam with a pearl inside. The chocolate was delicious, Sikorski said.

“I had shared the story of their ring,” said Bontempo, the catering and sales manager at Ocean House.  “I was sharing that with our pastry chef so when they came for their cake tasting, she wanted to make it a little bit more special for them.”

She said with each couple she works with, she likes to get details and hear their love stories to give their ceremonies that personal touch.

“I have to say that that pastry was kind of above and beyond,” she said.

The bride and groom have also curated the perfect playlist to celebrate their union on the 14th.

They plan to sway to Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately” for their first dance and later, they’ll feature songs by artists such as Bruno Mars.

Wedding will be something fun for everyone, bride and groom say

Steinkamp and Sikorski said the wedding will be momentous for them but also for family and friends.

It has been a tough time for them because her mother passed away a few years ago and her father, Louis Bald, is 93 and has had some health issues. He is determined to live longer and attend the wedding though.

Sikorski wants her father to walk her down the aisle and he has been in and out of the hospital. They’ll see if he can walk with a cane, she said.

“He said ‘I’m not going to miss it,’” Sikorski recalled.

Her husband-to-be said part of the planning involved making sure her father is taken care of.

“One of the challenges of doing this is not only the cost and the timing but it's the organization around her father,” he said. It's the coordination of that and allowing us some time away. Sandy's been because she's the oldest, she's been the main caretaker for mother and father for many years.”

The couple will marry on a Sunday and the next day, they’ll fly out to Europe for three weeks. They want to go to Paris since Sikorski  has never been and French is her native language.

Family members have stepped in to take care of her father so the couple can travel.

Her father is so excited about the wedding, she said. He asks them all the time about the wedding plans and can’t wait to see it come to fruition.

“All weddings are a family affair,” Steinkamp said. “This little smaller wedding has been very special in that regard because it does bring a little light into the picture.”

'This is a Hallmark story if there ever was one'

Prior to meeting in 2018, both of them had been married and divorced. They joined the same dating app and one day, she got a notification that he was nearby. She wanted to message him but her membership had lapsed, so she renewed it and introduced herself.

The couple found the pearl in December 2021 and on July 6, 2023, he proposed to her.

Both Steinkamp and Sikorski are thrilled to tie the knot and travel after. They can’t help but smile when reflecting on their journey to get to this point.

“This is a Hallmark story if there ever was one,” Steinkamp said.

Stalin's Seven Sisters Skyscrapers in Moscow

  • Guide to Russia

What are Stalin’s Seven Sisters in Moscow?

  • Stalin’s Seven Sisters are seven skyscrapers built in Moscow between 1947 and 1957 . Their construction was not just functional, but had ideological and political importance. They were intended to show the accomplishment and regeneration of the USSR in the post-war period, and provide exclusive residence for the Soviet elite and foreign visitors
  • The architecture of Stalin’s Seven Sisters reflected this. They were built in monumental Stalinist Empire style and inspired by skyscrapers of the USA. They are characterised by their wedding-cake shape, intricate architectural and decorative details, and luxurious interiors
  • Today, two of Stalin’s Seven Sisters are luxury hotels, one is the main building of Moscow State University, one is home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the others are residential, commercial and administrative properties

Stalin used architecture as a political and ideological tool, constructing the Seven Sisters skyscrapers in Moscow to reflect the modernity, ambition and triumph of Soviet Russia. For years the tallest buildings in Europe, these seven commanding skyscrapers are significant monuments of architecture and urban planning which draw the eye from all over Moscow.

Photo by Carlos Delgado on Wikipedia

History of Stalin’s Seven Sisters

Stalin commissioned the Seven Sisters in Moscow to demonstrate the triumph and regeneration of the USSR after the devastation of the Second World War, and rival the high-rises of capitalist cities. Their foundations were laid on the 800th anniversary of Moscow in September 1947.

Eight buildings were planned on the city’s main intersections and in the bends of the Moskva River. The leading architects of the era were entrusted with each project, and received Stalin Prizes in 1949 for their plans. The tallest and most central skyscraper was to be the Zaryadye Administrative Building next to the Kremlin, but construction was halted after the death of Stalin (thankfully, as this huge building would have spoilt the architectural ensemble of the Kremlin and Red Square).

Did you know? Today, Park Zaryadye lies on the site where the Zaryadye Administrative Building would have stood.

Two of Stalin’s Seven Sisters were designed as luxury hotels to show off the Soviet Union to foreign visitors. Others were built to house the Soviet elite and were like a city within a city, housing apartments, shops, offices and entertainment facilities and equipped with the latest technology including high-speed lifts, rubbish chutes, ventilation, and internal telephone systems.

Did you know? Rumour had it that secret corridors were constructed throughout the residential buildings so that residents could be spied upon at any point!

Architecture and design of Stalin’s Seven Sisters

The Seven Sisters were constructed in Stalinist Empire style, a leading architectural trend from 1933 to 1955. Stalinist Empire is a synthesis of many architectural styles including Russian Baroque, Art Deco, and Neo-Gothic, and makes for some impressively monumental yet harmonious and well-proportioned buildings. The architects and engineers of Stalin’s Seven Sisters closely studied skyscrapers built in the USA; much like the Empire State Building and Woolworth Building, the Seven Sisters are characterised by their wedding-cake-like upper floors tapering to a towering spire.

Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers were so huge that their construction required ingenious and innovative technology. Their floorplans would reinforce them against swaying in the wind, the wedding-cake silhouette better distributed the weight of the building, and in some cases liquid nitrogen was used to freeze the soil during construction! Although the technology developed during this time advanced housing development later on, the sheer effort and funds expended on the Seven Sisters detracted from construction of housing elsewhere in the USSR, at a moment when the country was in desperate need of rebuilding.

Did you know? The so-called ‘Eighth Sister’ of Moscow is Triumph Palace, a 57-storey luxury apartment building built in 2001 and the 9th tallest building in Russia!

The Seven Sisters boast many intricate architectural and decorative details. Pillars, arches, balustrades, and turrets enhance their silhouettes, and the spires are topped with an enormous 5-point star so that the true height of the building is visible even from afar. Sculptures of workers and farmers look down on the streets below, and bas-reliefs of Soviet symbols such as laurel wreaths, 5-pointed stars, and hammers and sickles adorn the monolithic walls. The grandness of the architecture and design of Stalin’s Seven Sisters bears a striking resemblance to that of the Moscow Metro!

Did you know? Other similar skyscrapers were constructed in Kiev, Riga, Prague and Bucharest. The largest is the Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw, built by Lev Rudnev between 1952 and 1955 as a gift to Poland from the Soviet Union, and nicknamed ‘Stalin’s Souvenir’. At 237 metres, it is the tallest building in Poland and contains libraries, theatres, cinemas, museums, research institutes, and government departments.

The interiors of the Seven Sisters contain gleaming marble floors, carved stone, columns, precious wood panelling, high ceilings, stained glass, and even chandeliers. The architects noted that in skyscrapers in the USA, many of the rooms were dark and overlooked deep inner courtyards, and they thus designed the Seven Sisters so that all rooms would have plenty of natural light.

Did you know? Some interior decorative elements were in fact made from papier mache, to reduce the cost and weight of construction materials.

Where can you find the Seven Sisters, and what are they home to today?

Moscow state university main building.

Photo by  Schoschi (Georg Dembowski) on Wikipedia

The largest of the Seven Sisters is the main building of Moscow State University on Sparrow Hills, designed by Lev Rudnev and constructed between 1949 and 1953 by thousands of Gulag labourers. It was the tallest building in Europe until 1990 and remains today the largest educational building in the world! Four sprawling wings extend from a central tower reaching 240 metres into the sky, and each wing is crowned by smaller towers fronted by enormous clocks. In the student dormitories in the wings alone, there are 6,000 rooms.

Did you know? 40,000 tons of steel and 175 million bricks were used to construct the MGU main building, and the interior lighting network is over 450km long.

The MGU main building was constructed with granite from Ukraine and marble from Georgia and Uzbekistan. It was proposed to place a statue of Stalin atop the building, though Stalin instead ordered for a spire to crown the building. Huge statues of workers and farmers stand at the 27th floor, and there are bas-reliefs of workers and students. The main building still retains its gorgeous original interiors.

  • Height – 240 metres, 36 floors
  • Address - Ulitsa Leninskiye Gory, 1 (nearest metro is Lomonosovsky Prospekt, 1.1km)
  • Best view – from Sparrow Hills observation deck, which also offers an unparalleled view over Moscow (nearest metro is Vorobyovy Gory, 1.8km)

Hotel Ukraina

Photo on Wikipedia

Hotel Ukraina was built by Arkady Mordvinov and Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky between 1953 and 1957. The U-shaped building is faced with white ceramic blocks, limestone and granite. Four towers stand atop each of the two wings, stylised with Soviet symbols and wheat sheaves. Upon opening, the Ukraina was the tallest hotel in Europe, and received its name in honour of the 300th anniversary of the unification of Russia and Ukraine, celebrated in 1954. A prestigious hotel, it was intended as the residence for foreigners visiting the USSR. 1,200 paintings by Soviet artists decorated the inside, and a winter garden with a fountain was constructed on the 2nd floor.

Today, the building houses a hotel and residential apartments; the hotel occupies the main building, and the apartments the two wings. The luxurious interiors of the public spaces have been preserved since the 1950s, including the paintings and sculptures. It is possible to visit a viewing platform on the 33rd floor for a panorama of the historical centre of Moscow (access is free for hotel guests, and paid for non-guests).

Did you know? The hotel counts among its former guests Robert de Niro, Ralph Fiennes, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building

The Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building was built between 1947 and 1952 by Dmitry Chechulin, the chief architect of Moscow, at the confluence of the Moskva and Yauza Rivers. Three wings are attached to a hexagonal central tower, two of which extend into large apartment blocks. Ornate arches, columns, turrets, and spiked metal ornaments decorate the central and side towers. In its 540 apartments lived celebrities, important scientists and members of the Soviet government, and it housed a post office, restaurant, football pitch, cinema, and even a massage parlour.

  • Height – 176 metres, 32 floors
  • Address – Kotelnicheskaya Embankment, 1 (nearest metro is Taganskaya, 1.2km)
  • Best view – Ustinsky Square or Bolshoy Ustinsky Bridge

Did you know? As the skyscraper was constructed by Gulag labour, engraved messages from prisoners were discovered by residents there!

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was constructed between 1948 and 1953 by Vladimir Gelfreykh and Adolf Minkus. It is made of red and grey granite, limestone and ceramic blocks, and has many features of English Gothic architecture. Two wings extend from the central tower, each crowned with two square towers. The interior was decorated in the style of Soviet Art Deco, with marble, granite, and stained glass. Interestingly, an enormous crest of the USSR remains on the front of the building – as a monument of architectural heritage, the decision was taken not to remove it.

  • Height – 172 metres, 27 floors
  • Address - Smolensky Bulvar, 32/34 (nearest metro is Smolenskaya, 350m)
  • Best view – Smolenskaya-Sennaya Ploshchad

Did you know? The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the only one of the Seven Sisters not to be crowned with a 5-pointed star, as its spire was too weak.

Kudrinskaya Square Building

Photo by Dmitry Rozhkov on Wikipedia

The Kudrinskaya Square Building was constructed by Mikhail Posokhin and Ashot Mndoyants between 1948 and 1954. As with the skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya, it was built for Moscow’s elite and housed over 450 luxury apartments, a cinema, underground car park, ice cream parlour, and Moscow’s largest grocery store. It was richly decorated both inside and out: the exterior is adorned with carved rosettes, cornices, turrets, statues, ornate towers on each corner, and an elegant spire; the interior with chandeliers, stained glass, Greek columns and patterned marble floors. Apartments in the building today are extremely expensive real estate.

  • Height – 160 metres, 25 floors
  • Address – Kudrinskaya Ploshchad, 1 (nearest metro is Krasnopresnenskaya, 600m)
  • Best view – By the fountain on Kudrinskaya Ploshchad

Red Gates Administrative Building

The Red Gates Administrative Building was constructed between 1948 and 1951 by Alexei Dushin. In the U-shaped building, offices are located in the central tower and apartments in the wings, a setup which has remained since the 1950s. The façade is made from limestone embellished with intricate layers of cornices at the top of each tier and a grand entrance made from red granite. Interestingly, there is an entrance to the Krasnye Vorota (Red Gates) metro station right inside the building.

  • Height – 138 metres, 26 floors
  • Address - Sadovaya-Spasskaya Ulitsa, 21/1 (nearest metro is Krasnye Vorota, entrance on the building’s east wing or directly across the Garden Ring road)
  • Best view – Outside Krasnye Vorota metro’s main entrance

Leningradskaya Hotel

The Leningradskaya Hotel was constructed between 1949 and 1954 by Leonid Polyakov and Alexander Boretsky. The architecture and design of this skyscraper is considered to have the most Russian elements compared to its sisters, in particular its tented porch entrance. Palatial public areas were decorated with statues, bronze chandeliers, painted ceilings, murals and stained glass, and there is even a ballroom. Although the excessive luxury of the hotel was shamed in the Khrushchev era, the décor has thankfully been preserved.

  • Height – 136 metres, 26 floors
  • Address – Kalanchevskaya Ulitsa, 21/40 (nearest metro is the equally luxurious Komsomolskaya, 500m)
  • Best view – Komsomolskaya Ploshchad

Did you know? In the stairwell between the 2nd and 7th floors hangs a chandelier, suspended by a 15.5 metres long bronze garland – once the longest lighting fixture in the world!

Fish Stew and Black Fettuccine, an Unexpected Recipe for Love

Maxwell Da Silva, who is from Brazil, and Jane Satsuk, who is from Russia, immediately connected over their “very humble beginnings.” But it was Mr. Da Silva’s cooking that won her heart.

A bride and groom hold hands and walk together on an outdoor wooden walkway beside the ocean. She is wearing a strapless white wedding dress, a veil and holding a bouquet of white flowers. He is wearing a pale blue suit, tan shoes and a boutonniere.

By Sadiba Hasan

It was Sept. 1, 2020, and Maxwell Dayvson Da Silva and Evgenia Satsuk were wearing masks during their first date at Leuca, an Italian restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He freaked her out just a bit when he asked her to lower her mask and kissed her.

“All right, now I’m going to die,” she recalled thinking. “He probably kisses every woman during the pandemic.” He had actually quarantined in his apartment for 90 days because he had been terrified of going out during the Covid-19 pandemic. But at the time, she didn’t know that.

The kiss didn’t scare her away, though, because of their animated conversation over dinner and drinks. They had met on the dating app Tinder a week before, and they connected about life in New York and life in their homelands. Mr. Da Silva is from Recife, Brazil, and Ms. Satsuk from Khabarovsk, Russia.

Mr. Da Silva, 40, was born and raised in a favela, a working-class neighborhood. At 14, he taught himself how to code, and when he was 15, he started working as a software engineer at a media company. In 2012, he got a job offer as a software engineer at The New York Times and moved to Brooklyn. “It’s honestly a miracle,” said Mr. Da Silva, as he reflected on his childhood days carrying buckets of water to his home, which didn’t have running water most days.

Ms. Satsuk, 38, grew up in a housing project in Eastern Russia. She graduated from Khabarovsk State University of Economics and Law with a bachelor’s degree in international business and became an account manager at a retail company. She moved to Brooklyn in 2011.

“Even though we were separated by oceans and different continents,” Mr. Da Silva said, “we had a very similar story growing up with very humble beginnings.”

For their second date, they met at Sweetwater, another restaurant in Williamsburg. And on the dates that followed, Mr. Da Silva invited her over to his apartment in Williamsburg and won her heart with his cooking.

On their third date, he prepared moqueca , a seafood stew. On the fourth date, he made a mashed potato dish with crab and shrimp. It was so good, she said, that she took some home. And on the fifth date, he cooked black fettuccine with a vodka sauce and lobster, a dish that he now makes for the couple every year on Valentine’s Day.

In January 2021, Ms. Satsuk and Mr. Da Silva booked a one-way ticket to Hawaii. At the time, Mr. Da Silva was working at Lyft as a senior director of engineering, and he was also in the midst of completing a master’s degree in interactive telecommunications at N.Y.U. He is currently the vice president of engineering at Shopify.

Their time in Oahu was a big stress reliever, Mr. Da Silva said. At 5 p.m. every day, he wrapped up at work and went to Waikiki Beach with Ms. Satsuk. Sometimes they had ice cream. They watched the waves and waited for the sunset. They ended up staying in Hawaii for five months.

On Nov. 25, 2022, during a friendsgiving dinner in their home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Mr. Da Silva proposed. While everyone’s glasses were filled with champagne, he made a toast, Ms. Satsuk recalled: “I’m so grateful for all of you guys, but I’m most grateful for this Russian princess I met.”

In February 2024, the couple hosted a three-day Russian and Brazilian celebration with 75 guests in Pipa, a beach town in northeastern Brazil, close to Mr. Da Silva’s hometown.

On the first night, they had a pool party. Colorful dune buggies escorted guests from their hotels to the party, where they took a samba class.

The next day, a wedding celebration took place on a full moon at Filha da Lua Eco Lodge, a resort hotel. A D.J. played Brazilian, Russian and American music. At the end of the celebration, everyone jumped into a pool, including Ms. Satsuk in her wedding dress.

And on the third day, guest were treated to a Russian-themed Sunday brunch.

“I felt so loved,” Ms. Satsuk said. Her family flew in from Russia, taking four planes on a 48-hour trip. She saw her father for the first time in five years.

“I never had a dream of having a wedding dress, and having a wedding day,” added Ms. Satsuk. “But what happened was just a dream come true — a dream I didn’t know I had.”

The celebration had an altruistic component. The owners of the hotel they stayed at had opened a school for children in the neighborhood, but the library had only had a few books. The couple asked each guest to bring a handful of books to donate to the school’s library.

On March 28, the couple were legally wed at the Brooklyn Marriage Bureau. Huiling Zheng, a staff member of the city clerk’s office, officiated.
