3 Best Scuba Diving Travel Insurance Plans Compared (2023)

When you’re heading off on your next diving trip, there’s something that you don’t want to leave home without.

We’re not talking about your mask, your dive computer or even your first aid kit.

We’re talking about  dive insurance .

Dive insurance is a crucial safeguard for divers seeking peace of mind during their dives.

The right scuba diving insurance policy offers comprehensive benefits, including coverage of medical expenses, emergency evacuation, equipment, liability, and more.

With various insurance providers and policies available, selecting the diving insurance can be a challenging task.

As a knowledgeable PADI Divemaster working on dive boats in Floridas scuba diving industry, I regularly advise customers on which policy is best for them.

Regardless of whether you’re a first time diver , lifestyle diver , or dive professional , this article will help you choose the best scuba diving insurance plan for you .

I studied the different dive insurance providers on the market, and narrowed down your selection to just three options.

I considered these factors:

  • Coverage for medical expenses, including hyperbaric chamber treatment
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation services
  • Equipment coverage, including loss, damage, or theft
  • Liability protection for personal injury or property damage
  • Worldwide coverage and 24/7 emergency assistance
  • Transparency of policy terms and conditions
  • Reputation and customer reviews of insurance providers
  • And much more!

You can view our dive insurance selections below, and read extensive reviews and deep dives into insurance plans.

Towards the end of the article, I’ll also answer any frequently asked questions that come up when buying scuba insurance.

Safe diving everyone 🙏

Do I Need Dive Insurance?

Here’s the deal:

Diving is a  very safe sport . According to PADI, there are  just under 1,100 scuba-related ER visits  per year.

Medical emergencies as a result of diving are extremely rare. But when they do happen, they get very expensive, very fast. We all like to think that it’ll never happen to us.

But what if it does?

If you’re not insured, you’ll have to pay upfront for any treatment you need, which for most of us would be a big problem.

Emergency evacuations  and  recompression therapy  can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

We’re not just talking about the big accidents.

Even small accidents can add up quickly. Hospital bills, extended accommodation, and rebooked flights home can lead to a very big credit card bill.

With serious diving emergencies, fast and effective treatment can mean the difference between a temporary and permanent disability.

Or even life and death.

But to answer the question:

There are some diving charters and liveaboard operations that require diving insurance, but these aren’t super common.

So to answer the question, no, you do not need diving insurance.

That being said, let’s jump into our favorite diving insurance options.

DiveAssure

  • Specific to Divers
  • Very fair pricing, great coverage
  • Not the most well established
  • The website can act a bit silly

Dive Assure scuba diving insurance webpage screenshot

Dive Assure are experts in diving-related emergencies and hyperbaric medical procedures offering extensive dive and travel insurance worldwide. Their tiered packages provide options for every diver, with no gas or depth limits on any packages.

Higher tiered packages give you higher financial limits on emergency travel expenses, lost dive gear, etc.

Dive Assure provides direct payment to your treatment facility as well as 24/7 access to dive physicians via their emergency hotline.

Let’s take a closer look at both their plans side by side.

Standard Plan

  • Medical Expense : $150,000
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation : $150,000
  • Accidental Death & Disability : $10,000
  • Loss of Diving Equipment : $2,000
  • Repatriation of Remains : $5,000
  • Flight & Accommodation Extra Expense : $3,000

Explorer Plan

  • Medical Expense : $250,000
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation : $250,000
  • Accidental Death & Disability : $25,000
  • Loss of Diving Equipment : $4,000
  • Repatriation of Remains : $10,000
  • Flight & Accommodation Extra Expense : $5,000

The main things to point out between the two plans are the massively increased limits on medical expenses, evacuation, and accidental death . Other categories have some increased limits as well, but the importance of these categories is not as high.

Divers Alert Network

  • The yearly Plan starts at just $40
  • Most established and well-known provider
  • Email support can be slow to get back

With over 30 years of experience in diving accidents, DAN is probably the most famous provider of dive insurance.

They also offer a wealth of diving medical resources and educational opportunities. Endorsed by  PADI , Divers Alert Network is a popular choice amongst both recreational and professional divers.

DAN offers 3 different tiered plans with a range of add-ons available including; equipment cover, public liability, and general travel insurance.

There are no mileage restrictions on any plans and the upper-tiers offer unlimited medical and hyperbaric expenses.

A 24/7 emergency hotline with trained dive physicians is available to all DAN members.

DAN Regular Plan

  • Repatriation of Remains : $150,000
  • Repatriation For Additional Care : $150,000
  • Visit of Family Member : $1,000

  • Emergency Medical Evacuation : $500,000
  • Repatriation of Remains : $500,000
  • Repatriation For Additional Care : $500,000
  • Search and Rescue: $50,000
  • Visit of Family Member : $5,000
  • Return of Dependent Children : $500,000
  • Return of Traveling Companion : $500,000

Dive Insurance Buying Guide

Picking a dive insurance policy is not the most exciting part of planning your dive trip.

Or the simplest.

There’s a lot of jargon and fine print to wade your way through.

But, because we care about you, we’ve put together a guide to help you pick your dive insurance.

Let’s look at the criteria you need to consider when comparing dive insurance policies.

Is My Country Covered?

One of the most important things to check for when picking a dive insurance policy is whether the country you live in, and the country you are potentially living in are covered by the provider.

For example, DAN only provides insurance to the USA and Canada.

So it doesn’t really matter how great their coverage is or what activities are supported if you can’t even use them!

Read the Fine Print

Next up, you’ll want to look at the exclusions and the fine print.

There are a lot of variations between what is and what isn’t covered, and to what extent.

For example, this user on ScubaBoard told a story where a liveaboard was canceled due to a category 5 hurricane but was not covered by the dive insurance provider.

If there is a specific scenario you’re insuring against, specifically look for this in the policy details.

free diving travel insurance

You’ll also want to make sure that the coverage is high enough for the more expensive outcomes like emergency evacuations and recompression chambers .

Diving insurance is best for preventing medical bankruptcy, not for a missed flight or a broken camera.

These can be the most expensive part of a diving accident. Make sure these are unlimited or very large sums (think several hundred thousand dollars).

Check that your dive insurance covers any extra accommodation or travel you may need due to your accident.

It’s not unusual for an injured diver to need to spend a week or more recovering abroad before being fit to travel home.

Does the Policy Have Depth, Type, or Gas Limits?

Double-check that the specific type of diving you plan to do is covered.

Many basic dive insurance policies will only cover you when diving on air up to a depth of 30m.

But what if you’re planning to dive with  nitrox ?

Or explore deeper than 30m?

Or go wreck or cave diving?

Remember your insurance will only cover you for diving activities that you’re trained in, and that the policy explicitly says it covers.

If you exceed your certification limits or fail to follow safety standards, you may find that your policy will not cover you in an emergency.

Nitrox scuba diving tank

Are There Any Travel Time Restrictions?

It’s quite common for an insurance policy to cover you for a year, but only for trips of 90 days or less.

So, if you’re heading off on a world round trip you may find yourself out of cover.

Some have other restrictions on the number of diving days covered. If you’re only planning a one-off dive trip, you can also get short term coverage.

Does my Course Cover Me?

Some dive centers bake the cost of diving insurance into the cost of your course or fun dives. Or others have it as an add-on. Talk with your dive shop and see if you’re covered, but it’s not super common.

What Extras Do You Want To Be Included With Your Dive Insurance?

Travel insurance.

Most dive insurance companies will offer the option to add travel insurance to your package. This means you’ll be covered for any other non-diving emergencies that can occur during your trip.

Trip Disruptions

Some insurance providers will cover you in the event your trip is disrupted in any way. This can be anything from a flight cancellation, weather emergency, or major health event. This perk is nice to have, but not a guarantee.

Dive Equipment

Having all of your expensive gear covered is a great bonus for a diving insurance plan, although it’s not too common.

DiveAssure has some protection against this, but the maximums are only $1,000~$4,000.

If they’re lost while traveling , damaged, or stolen, you’ll want them to be properly insured. Very extensive insurance policies will even cover a flooded  underwater camera !

Is Normal Travel Insurance Enough?

Scuba diving is not always covered by general travel insurance.

Even if it is, the coverage is generally basic and not adequate enough to fully cover you in a diving emergency.

Medical emergencies in diving need specialized care and should be treated by experts in the field.

Dive insurance companies provide 24/7 support from qualified dive physicians. The majority of travel or health insurance companies are often not able to offer the same expertise or special considerations that diving emergencies require.

That being said, there are a handful of travel insurance companies, such as  World Nomads , that are able to offer a good level of coverage and support for recreational scuba diving. It’s also important to note that there are specific requirements for the coverage to apply and very much depend on the plan you choose.

Keep reading for more details on requirements and what to look for when choosing a plan.

Dive insurance is a must-have for anyone jetting off to explore their next dive destination. With good dive insurance, you can fully enjoy every dive, knowing you’re covered for the worst-case scenario.

Don’t get in the water without it.

Now you’re convinced that dive insurance is a good idea; let’s help you pick the right policy.

Still Confused About Which Dive Insurance To Buy?

Dive insurance is as vital as your  mask ,  computer , and air. So, it’s worth taking a little bit of time to find the right policy for you.

First, decide:

  • What level of cover do you want?
  • And how often do you plan to travel and dive?

Then remember to read all the small details:

  • Are there any limitations on the coverage?
  • Are you happy with those limitations?
  • Can you add any extras you want covered?
  • Do they provide 24/7 emergency support?
  • Do they have expertise in diving related emergencies?

If you can answer yes to all of the above then you’re good to go!

While the price is important, it’s much more important that you’re properly covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dive insurance protects you against the unpredictable expenses of a potential scuba diving accident.

In general, dive insurance will cover the cost of any medical treatments, hyperbaric therapy, or emergency evacuation you may need.

More comprehensive dive insurance policies can also include cover for your dive gear, lost diving days, and much more.

While there is no exact best dive insurance for everyone, certain people will benefit from providers more than others.

If you’re diving where you live, or frequently traveling for diving, DiveAssure is a great option.

Lastly, DAN is a great idea for dive professionals based in the USA or Canada.

Dive insurance is a small expense that can, in the long run, not only save you from an enormous medical bill but can also save your life.

Whether you decide to buy dive insurance or not is completely up to you. But you now have the knowledge to find the best dive insurance to suit your needs!

Scuba diving tanks are one of the last pieces of equipment most divers buy for themselves.

For divers that dive frequently enough, there’s certainly some savings in getting tanks of your own. Not to mention the ability to do spontaneous trips with them, without having to pickup and drop off tanks from a dive shop.

Hi- I just wanted to say that your Con comment about DAN is a bit misleading. DAN has more than one entity but is worldwide as long as you are registered with the DAN that supports your residential country. For example, I live in Australia and am a member of DAN World Australia. I am covered anywhere in the world DAN coverage exists. However I would NOT be covered if I were a member of DAN USA/Canada but resided in Australia. I just wanted to clarify that as people might be confused about where and how DAN and DAN World coverage works.

Hey Brittney, thank you for clarifying this. I’ve edited the pro and con list to reflect your comment!

I agree with Brittney – this paragraph needs removing as I’m going through the process of buying DAN insurance and read your article just before committing.

On reading this, I thought that DAN was only applicable to those diving in USA and CAN only, despite the site asking where I live and charging in EURO.

It’s a misleading paragraph – “For example, DAN only provides insurance to the USA and Canada.

So it doesn’t really matter how great their coverage is or what activities are supported if you can’t even use them!”

I had DAN Europe 365 day cover, I had a non diving medical emergency which they refused to reimburse because they classed it as pre existing even with all my medical records and letters from 2 doctors to confirm that this was sudden onset and not pre existing plus this was probably dive related as it was a major sinus infection, it cost me over $6000 I am changing after 12 years from DAN to somebody else they have become like most regular insurance companies, useless in a crisis

Best dive insurance (2022 update)

Best dive insurance (2022 update)

We’ve chosen DiveAssure as the best blend of comprehensive dive insurance and travel coverage. Read our in-depth breakdown.

Diving accidents are rare, but when one happens you need insurance to cover you for healing time and expenses. The average health insurance won’t offer any coverage for scuba diving accidents, so it’s important to get additional insurance coverage. To pick the right policy for you, we’ve compared the top three worldwide options below.

Our top pick for frequent divers and travelers is DiveAssure. For those interested in a lower-cost option with less travel coverage, Divers Alert Network (DAN) is the leading insurance provider. Lastly, for those who occasionally add scuba diving into their travel itineraries, WorldNomads offers great coverage for travelers.

World Nomads Explorer

  • Top pick: DiveAssure

DiveAssure offers short-term and long-term plans that all offer a high level of coverage for divers. Their use of direct payments and added inclusions for lost dive days sets them apart from others. With their additional travel coverage they are a great option for divers who often travel for diving.

  • Just dive insurance: DAN

DAN is a reliable and well-known insurance company that puts safety first. Their coverage is comprehensive for all types of diving and comes at a lower price. Their insurance policies are perfect for divers who want easy, annual coverage with basic travel support.

  • Dive and travel insurance: World Nomads

World Nomads offers high levels of travel insurance and optional coverage of over 200 adventure sports. Their dive coverage is great for vacationers and recreational divers staying above 130 feet (40 meters). Their plans will cover your vacation from start to finish.

Do I need dive insurance?

When unforeseen dive accidents happen, they often require expensive medical procedures. For the most common dive injury, decompression sickness, treatment costs between $100 - $1000 per treatment. Often, patients need 10 to 60 treatments based on the severity of their case 1 . Diving accident insurance covers these costs and helps with medical assistance when you are in a foreign country.

If you are diving in your home country, dive insurance is still a necessity. Regular insurance doesn’t usually cover you for dive-related accidents, leaving you to pay out of pocket. It is important to check what your current coverage does and does not include.

Do I need dive insurance for dive courses?

For new divers taking courses, some dive shops offer short-term coverage for students. This comes at an additional cost, but requires little effort and is an insurance approved for the location you are in. Many PADI-certified shops offer DAN coverage, while SSI shops work with DiveAssure. If you plan for additional dives after your course is complete, you will need to purchase your own insurance.

Is regular travel insurance enough?

Most travel insurance doesn’t include coverage for riskier activities. Scuba diving is often seen as one of these activities and coverage comes at an extra cost. Sometimes this is a flat rate you can add on top of your insurance policy, but other times it will increase your premium amount significantly.

If you don’t add on dive accident insurance you won’t have coverage for any accidents related to scuba diving. If you do choose to add coverage for diving, you need to check the extent of the coverage for dive depths, gas, and dive types.

What does dive insurance cover?

Dive insurance covers you for dives in your home country and abroad. If there are any accidents your insurance covers the medical expenses, including hyperbaric treatments. Any emergency transportation and repatriation are also covered. Different companies and plans will have a limit to the amount that they will pay out for these expenses.

Dive insurance will also take care of any lost or damaged dive gear. While traveling with expensive pieces of equipment like BCDs and dive computers, you want to have coverage that will reimburse you for damage.

It is important to note that most dive insurance will only cover you for accidents that occur on your dive. The scuba dive starts when you enter the water and ends when you exit. Any accidents that occur on land or a boat before or after your dive are not covered unless stated says otherwise. For this reason, if you are traveling abroad, you will want to purchase travel insurance as well 2 . Some companies offer a combination of dive and travel insurance.

How to pick the best insurance?

Travel insurances will limit the depth of your dive more than dive insurance will. They are more conservative and will focus mostly on people diving recreationally during vacation. This is perfect for many divers with Open Water or Advanced certifications and new divers. You will likely not be going beyond depths of 130 feet (40 meters) or need to worry about diving without an instructor to guide you.

For divers who scuba dive often and are more advanced, you will want dive-specific insurance that covers you for the depths you plan to go. This is a crucial factor to consider for Tec divers who plan to go beyond 164 feet (50 meters).

If you are ready to dive deeper and progress in your scuba diving career, read our guide to becoming a dive instructor here.

Similar to dive depth, many travel insurances do not offer coverage for specialty dives that require different gas types. Recreational divers don’t need to worry about this, as the dive shop will provide you with the regular air mixture. Divers who do Nitrox, Tec, or Rebreather diving, need to purchase scuba dive insurance to cover all of their dives.

With dive and travel insurance, you need to check what locations they cover. Some offer coverage worldwide, while others only work in some countries. When planning an international diving trip, remember to check that your insurance covers the destination. Planning a dive trip is overwhelming and there are many things to think about. Read our full guide to planning a dive trip here.

Dive Equipment

Dive insurance will offer varying levels of equipment coverage for damage or loss. This coverage may only be for dive-related damage that doesn’t cover you while in transit to the dive location.

Alternatively, travel insurance will cover you for baggage loss and damage while you travel, but not while you are diving. For this reason, and for full health coverage, you will want to purchase both travel and dive insurance.

  • Detailed product reviews
  • Unlimited diving emergency medical expenses
  • Covers mixed gas, technical, rebreather, cave, and ice diving
  • No depth limit
  • Travel assistance is available
  • 24-hour medical assistance hotline
  • Lost or damaged scuba gear from €2000 – €5000
  • Lost diving days due to medical conditions and weather on travel policies
  • Direct payment for medical expenses
  • Lower non-diving medical expense payout
  • No coverage for other adventure sports or activities

DiveAssure has grown in popularity amongst divers as they offer comprehensive coverage that rivals others in the industry. They work in conjugation with Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and provide excellent medical support. DiveAssure is also the chosen insurance company for SSI dive shops and students.

For advanced divers, DiveAssure has no limit to depth and dive type. They also specifically include specialty dives in their coverage, like cave and ice diving.

One benefit that only DiveAssure offers is coverage for lost dive days due to weather conditions. As weather at sea is unpredictable, this is a great bonus for divers with limited diving time 3 .

When you do file a claim, you will get direct payment to service providers. This saves you from paying out of pocket and waiting for them to reimburse you later. Many other insurance companies don’t offer this service and it can get you the help you need without stressing about money.

DiveAssure Plans

There are three plans offered, DiveSafe, Dive&Travel, Dive&Travel Plus. Each one has long-term and short-term plans for divers to choose from. Each policy includes 24-hour emergency medical assistance and translation services while traveling. They also offer unlimited coverage for dive emergency medical costs on the DiveSafe and Dive&Travel Plus plans.

DiveSafe annual plans will cover all local dives for those that stay closer to home. DiveSafe plans also cover unlimited hyperbaric chamber treatments and unlimited medical expenses while recuperating at home 4 .

The two travel plans include all of the DiveSafe benefits plus coverage for baggage, trip cancellation, and flights. While they also cover non-dive-related emergencies, this coverage is much lower than what most travel insurance companies offer. However, if diving is your main reason for travel, the high dive coverage outweighs this 5 .

The bottom line: DiveAssure offers more comprehensive scuba diving insurance coverage than others and will protect you at home and abroad. The travel benefits are not as high as what travel insurance offers, but it is enough for those who travel just for diving.

  • Covers free diving (Apnea), snorkeling, scuba, and professional diving
  • Access to DAN’s Ask a Medic
  • Automatic enrollment in 24-hour DAN TravelAssist up to $150,000
  • Lost or damaged scuba gear from $1000 – $5000
  • Low premium rates
  • No single-trip coverage
  • No coverage for lost dive days

DAN is one of the most popular and well-known dive insurance agencies in the world. They have been operating for over 40 years and provide high-quality medical information and assistance to divers. They often conduct their own dive-related research and are the recommended insurance agency of PADI.

To purchase a DAN insurance policy you must first be a DAN member. The membership rate is $35 a year and comes with additional perks that members have access to even without an insurance plan. This includes TravelAssist, a 24-hour emergency hotline, and access to medical specialists for non-emergency inquiries 6 .

TravelAssist is similar to a basic travel insurance policy. The coverage that you receive offers medical emergency coverage for diving and non-diving emergencies. You are not covered for non-emergencies, travel interruption or cancellation, or loss of baggage during non-dive-related accidents. These benefits only go into effect when you are 50 miles away from your home address.

The insurance policies you can purchase on top of the membership come in three tiers, Master, Preferred, and Guardian. The price for the Master plan is one of the lowest insurance costs in the industry. This plan covers you for dive accidents and equipment damage, with no depth or gas limits 7 .

The Preferred plan offers the same coverage as the Master, but with higher payout rates. It also includes coverage for non-dive accidents when traveling abroad. The highest level plan, the Guardian, offers additional coverage for other named water sport accidents and search and rescue 8 . This plan is for more advanced divers who may be taking on riskier dives and other water activities.

DAN plans only offer annual coverage. This is good for avid scuba divers who travel specifically for diving and want the comfort in knowing they are always covered. Those who only scuba dive occasionally may feel this is unnecessary and would prefer the option of short-term policy.

The bottom line: DAN’s dive coverage is comprehensive and they have a long history of working with divers. The basic travel coverage is good for those who only want emergency medical coverage or have a separate travel insurance plan.

World Nomads

  • Emergency medical expenses up to $100,000
  • Lost or damaged baggage and gear $2500 – $3500
  • Trip interruption
  • Covers freediving, shark cage diving, and cave diving
  • 24-hour emergency assistance
  • Depth limit of 50 meters
  • Specialty diving only covered on Explorer Plan
  • Doesn’t cover mixed gas

World Nomads insurance is first and foremost travel insurance. It is one of the leading insurance companies for short-term vacationers and backpackers because it offers good coverage at affordable prices.

Unlike dive-focused insurance, travel insurance guarantees more coverage for your entire diving trip. This is great for people who plan to do more than just scuba diving as they travel. These benefits include trip cancellation, and trip interruption or delay. Coverage includes lost, stolen, damaged, or delayed baggage, including diving equipment.

Additionally, World Nomads has the option to buy travel insurance after your trip has already started. This sets them apart from other travel insurance companies and gives you more flexibility for your travel start and end dates 9 .

World Nomads Plans

There are two plans to choose from the Standard and Explorer. Recreational scuba diving and lessons are part of the Standard plan. The Explorer plan covers the specialty scuba, free diving, and commercial diving. This policy also includes all of the other 200+ adventure sports World Nomads offers 10 .

While the diving coverage isn’t as comprehensive as DiveAssure or DAN, it is plenty for those who only dive recreationally. It also includes coverage for some specialty and commercial diving. Coverage for scuba divers is for any dive that is within their certification limits and when taking a course with a dive instructor. If you dive beyond your limits or past 50 meters, you are no longer covered in an accident.

Beyond diving, the two plans are almost identical with the Explorer plan offering higher benefit rates 11 .

The bottom line: World Nomads is the best blend of travel and dive insurance for recreational divers. If your travels will include a wide variety of adventure sports and you want coverage for your flights and trip costs, this is the best option.

Dive insurance is a necessary part of scuba diving and offers added support and protection when you are diving at home and abroad. When choosing an insurance policy consider all of the activities you plan to do and decide if you need higher coverage for diving, traveling, and other adventure activities.

Best Travel Insurance for Scuba Diving

Buying travel insurance for scuba diving is a confusing process. Is it worth it? What companies offer the best policies?

I never considered purchasing travel insurance for scuba diving until I heard a few horror stories – and had a few of them myself.

Dive gear getting stolen. Entire trips getting rerouted and canceled. Medical emergencies. The list goes on and on of what could possibly go wrong.

These situations happen all the time. So why not insure your next dive trip? It’s an affordable way that may save you thousands of dollars, valuable time, and many hair-pulling phone calls.

Do you need travel insurance for scuba diving?

To buy or not to buy, that is the question. And honestly, the answer is entirely personal. Many people travel and dive without insurance, and it seems to work out fine. I’ve done it a few times myself.

But after years of meeting people where something horrible did happen, I’ve rethought that stance. So today, if someone asks me, “Should I purchase insurance for my next dive trip?” I answer with:

YES! Everyone should purchase dive travel insurance in some capacity.

Why? Because shit happens. Gear gets stolen. Trips get canceled. Medical emergencies arise – particularly in a sport as risky as scuba diving.

Real-Life Examples of Why You Need Travel Dive Insurance

I often dive and guide an older woman who frequently visits the Fort Lauderdale area throughout the year. Over the two years I’ve been diving with her, she’s still trying to purchase all her scuba equipment. Again.

During a quick pit stop while diving in Saint Lucia, her dive gear was stolen from her rental car. Equipment worth thousands went in one instant. Today, she’s still trying to repurchase every piece of gear from the pricey checklist of gear required for scuba diving.

Another time was aboard the vessel we work for in Fort Lauderdale. Now, in scuba diving, particularly if you work on a vessel, it’s not a matter if something bad happens. It’s when it happens.

On this day, a gentleman visiting the area from Brazil decided to suck his tank down to zero and shoot to the surface from 70 feet down. HIGHLY not recommended.

Needless to say, he needed medical attention, and the USA certainly isn’t known for its affordability regarding medical services. Unfortunately, on top of a medical ailment, this guy had a hefty hospital bill by the end of his dive travels.

Simply put, it happens. No matter how careful you may be. It’s only time until Murphy’s law comes for you.

Who sells travel insurance for scuba diving?

The most thorough dive insurance, specifically designed for dive travel, is through World Nomads . Their keystone promise is, “Simple and flexible travel insurance to keep you safe on your next dive trip. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere worldwide.”

I purchased their insurance during my dive travels in Australia and Thailand and would do it again in a heartbeat. Although I was lucky not to need it during those trips, it helped me sleep at night, knowing that if anything did happen, I’d be well taken care of.

Four Reasons to Purchase Travel Insurance for Your Next Dive Trip

Although the list is extensive, these are the four main reasons you should purchase travel insurance for scuba diving from World Nomads :

1. Trip Protection

In the post-COVID world, trip protection is key. What if you need to cancel your trip? What if the dive operators cancel your trip? Hell, what if the dive operators go under?! These are all possibilities in today’s volatile economic climate.

Those reasons, amongst others, are enough to purchase a plan before your next dive trip.

2. Emergency Medical Insurance

To me, this is the biggest one. Scuba diving is inherently risky. Emergencies happen. Medical ailments arise. Even if you’re the most careful diver, these situations are never off the table.

That’s why, particularly if you’re diving in a foreign country, you must cover yourself if you ever need medical attention. It happens constantly – people getting stuck away from home because they can’t pay a medical bill. Don’t let that be you.

3. Emergency Evacuation

In the same breath, how would you get help if you needed medical attention? Transport to and from the hospital is often the most pricey aspect of the ordeal.

World Nomads offers Medivac back to your home country, ambulance rides, and sea level medical evacuations.

4. Protect Your Gear

But all in all, if anything were going to happen, it may just be this: your gear getting stolen .

Sure, it’s not the end of the world. But scuba gear is expensive. Like really expensive. Best not risk it!

Oh, and not to mention, World Nomads also includes gear like GoPro cameras, laptops, backpacks, sleeping bags, camping tents, etc. Almost every aspect of your travel pack will be covered!

Scuba Activities Included in a World Nomads Plan

The best part? The entire company is run by avid scuba divers. They understand diving and they understand you. Here are just a few scuba-related activities they cover:

  • Recreational scuba diving (qualified divers to 50 meters)
  • Discover scuba dives (with qualified instructors)
  • Shark cage diving, cavern, cave, and wreck diving

Travel Insurance for Scuba Diving Tips

  • Read the fine print! Know what situations you’re specifically covered for.
  • Take photos of all your gear with date stamps in the case of stolen items.
  • Receipts are always a good idea to hold onto.
  • Have a digital copy of the insurance policy AND hard copies in a dry bag during your dive trip.
  • In the case of theft, file a police report but keep it vague. Don’t give insurance companies any room to deny a claim based on your story.

Dive, dive, dive!

You’ve worked all year long to set sail to the tropics for some scuba diving! Protect your trip and insure your diving so you’re not left with a bill of epic proportions after your vacation.

DiveAssure - Honest Review & Test 2024

' src=

Review Summary

Get it here, first impression.

Of course, we also read other opinions online but in the end, nothing beats real world experience. So we took the time for a thorough DiveAssure test and review! Below you find everything you need to know, including features, specs and what we like, and don't like about it.

DiveAssure is a great all-inclusive provider of diving and travel-related insurance that stands out with its superb liveaboard coverage.

What We Like

  • Includes "lost diving days" coverage
  • Good support
  • Covers technical diving

Reasons to Avoid

  • Not the cheapest

Already know the DiveAssure is for you?

In that case, click on one of the links below for the latest prices. If you are undecided still, read the rest of the review to find out if the DiveAssure is what you're looking for!

DiveAssure Logo

In a hurry and looking for the gist of things? Here is our review in short. Keep reading for the entire version.

DiveAssure is a pure scuba diving insurance provider that offers great coverage with their DiveSafe and Dive & Travel plans. All types of diving accidents are covered, as well as the full cost of any hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments.

There is no depth limit and every type of diving is covered. From recreational to technical and cave diving, with air or mixed gases.

The same holds for solo and ice-diving.

Our favorite part about the DiveAssure offering is the option to expand the DiveSafe plan to include travel insurance that covers lost dive equipment, missed diving days due to flight delays, and even liveaboard coverage.

The Dive & Travel plans are even better because they include travel insurance for up to unlimited trips per year, including lost baggage and damaged scuba gear coverage. What’s not to like about that?

The DiveSafe plans start at around 69€ per year while the Dive & Travel basic plan is slightly more expensive. If you only dive in your home country, the basic plan is more than enough.

However, if you are a frequent traveler, we recommend at least the Dive & Travel package, as it’s just too good to miss out on that equipment coverage.

The family option comes at a 10% discount on all dive plans and is really worth it if you are a family of avid divers. After all, the more people join on a vacation, the higher the chance that something may go unplanned.

DiveAssure plans

A drawback of the DiveAssure insurance plans is that diving in the US is not covered for US citizens. If you are a US citizen wanting to cave dive in Florida, you will have to look elsewhere in that case.

It must also be said that, in comparison to aquaMed, travel insurance is not included in the basic plan. However, the DiveAssure travel insurance is much more extensive than the former.

DiveAssure does not impose any limits on diving depths and the types of diving you do.

Mixed gases, rebreathers , solo, and cave diving all fall under the policy without any additional cost.

DiveAssure homepage

The coolest part about the Dive & Travel options is the liveaboard coverage which will reimburse you for any missed diving days on a boat in the case of delayed flights.

If you travel for a long time to get to your destinations, things can happen. Quite a few people have missed their liveaboard when their flights were delayed, their luggage didn’t arrive or something else went wrong.

DiveAssure Pros

  • Great coverage
  • Extensive upgrade options
  • Excellent customer service
  • Diving liability insurance included
  • Short-term options available
  • Family insurance at 10% discount
  • Tech, cave & solo-diving included
  • Equipment damages from accidents covered

DiveAssure Cons

  • Does not cover US citizens when diving in the US
  • Travel insurance only included in higher-tier plans
  • Not the cheapest option

Verdict: A-

If you are willing to spend some extra money on your diving insurance, DiveAssure is the way to go. They might be more expensive, but the added benefits for scuba divers are undoubtedly worth it.

A good part about this insurance is also that it is available to anyone and not restricted to Europe or the USA.

Thanks for the review! I just finished my Open Water course and will be going to the Maldives in two weeks. Do you think the “Dive&Travel Plus” plan is worth the additional cost over the “Dive&Travel” for that? Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment! In general, the normal Dive & Travel offers great coverage and the Plus plan is meant for those who like to travel a lot and to exotic diving destinations.

In your case, I believe the “Dive & Tavel” plan should be enough, assuming you stay at a resort. Do you have your own scuba gear that you’re traveling with? In that case, the Plus plan covers a higher value. Otherwise, if you are going on a liveaboard diving trip or have a lot of connecting flights, then I think the “missed flights” coverage in the Plus plan is better.

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, let me know!

Cheers Julius

2 Types of Travel Insurance That Covers Snorkeling & Scuba

Not all travel insurance is created equal when it comes to snorkeling and scuba diving.

Did you know that snorkeling and scuba diving are often specifically excluded from travel medical insurance plans, and that your regular medical insurance usually doesn’t work at all outside of your home country?

That’s kind of a problem. While something like snorkeling is generally considered to be a safe activity [ source ], I’ve found having travel medical insurance on every trip to be super important for me. And, I want travel insurance that covers snorkeling in particular (or even scuba diving).

Even with something minor — say I trip on something on the boat and sprain my ankle — I don’t want to worry about where to go, how much it will cost, how to pay, or anything else like that. I can just call my travel insurance company and they’ll tell me everything that needs to happen in order to get it taken care of and get it covered. Even if the cost of a sprained ankle wouldn’t be financially devastating, I’d still rather have the costs covered and the worry about how to handle it all kept to a minimum.

Or, let’s say something serious happened and I needed urgent medical attention, maybe even enough so that I need to be transported to a different city or country with a better medical infrastructure. The cost for that transportation alone can run anywhere from $20,000 to $220,000 [ source ], and that doesn’t even include the cost of any medical care needed.

Yeah. I’d much rather have travel insurance that can cover something like that.

And, since travel insurance ends up being such a small cost relative to the overall amount of any trip I’ve taken, it’s been a no-brainer for me to spend a few extra bucks to protect it, along with my own health and wellbeing.

The problem, though, is that many travel insurance companies explicitly exclude coverage for anything that happens during activities like snorkeling or scuba diving. Your regular medical insurance also more than likely would cover little to nothing if you happened to be injured outside of your home country, possibly leaving you open to big medical bills.

There are a lot of reasons for this. If you’re interested, you can read our other article on the ins and outs of covering snorkeling through travel medical insurance at Does Travel Insurance Cover Snorkeling? 3 Critical Realities .

Otherwise, we’ll just dive into travel insurance that covers snorkeling and scuba diving to make finding a plan that does actually cover what you need to cover that much easier.

Snorkeling with a sea turtle and fish

Travel Insurance That Covers Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

My travel style, in general, is to rigorously research a general framework for a trip (transportation, best times of year to go, etc.) while still leaving some room for unexpected adventure once we arrive. That works great for us as a nice balance between rigid planning and playing it by ear, but I’m not looking for that same plan when it comes to travel insurance. Instead, travel insurance gets the fully-rigorous research treatment from start to finish.

After putting in hours of research once I started traveling and snorkeling extensively, World Nomads and Allianz Travel Insurance demonstrated themselves as travel insurance companies that could cover snorkeling. And, they both have popular travel insurance plans.

They each do have some differences between them, so I’ll outline how they work so you can make the best decision for your own travels.

Designed for Active Travelers: World Nomads Travel Insurance

The Best Travel Insurance that Covers Snorkeling & Scuba: World Nomads

World Nomads first showed up on my travel insurance radar because of their high ratings as far as customer service and low complaint numbers regarding claims, which, if you’ve ever dealt with an insurance company in any capacity, is appealing.

World Nomads is a unique travel insurance company that’s actually been custom-built for more adventurous travelers. As such, they explicitly cover snorkeling and scuba diving in both their Standard and Explorer insurance plans . You may not have heard of World Nomads even if you’re in the U.S., but they’re underwritten by Nationwide (a huge name in insurance here).

And, since World Nomads is focused on adventure travel, a whole mess of other adventure activities can be included, like bungee jumping, white water rafting and parasailing in their Standard plan, or hang gliding, shark cage diving and even wingsuit flying in the Explorer plan — things that almost always are explicitly not covered in many other companies’ travel medical insurance plans. Also, to alleviate any fears, “air guitar” is included in the Standard plan — woo!

Both World Nomads’ Standard and Explorer plans are meant for active travel (Explorer, as expected, has higher coverage limits), and it partially comes down to what you’ll be doing on your trip. If you like, you take a look at what’s covered between each plan and let your activities guide you.

Also, World Nomads lets you upgrade your plan after you buy it, so if you’re abroad and want to do something that’s covered by an upgrade to the Explorer plan which isn’t under Standard, you can make that happen without issue.

Another beautiful thing about World Nomads is that they are able to offer travel insurance to residents of over 140 countries, which is hugely helpful for my friends whose country of residence is not the U.S.

World Nomads offers online quotes, only requiring your destination, dates of travel, age and where you live. They aim to grant the best peace of mind for active travelers, and make getting a quote from World Nomads before your next snorkel (or wingsuit diving) widely available.

For travelers who are at all adventurous, World Nomads is an option for travel insurance that covers snorkeling (and more).

Open to American Travelers Over 70: Allianz Travel Insurance

The Best Travel Insurance that Covers Snorkeling & Scuba: Allianz Travel Insurance

Also ranking positively in the customer service and claims ratings is Allianz Travel Insurance, and if you happened to be excluded from World Nomads because you (or someone you’re traveling with) are over 70, they may be an option for you.

At first, I wasn’t able to find anything explicitly about snorkeling in their plans or on their website, so I contacted them directly and an agent confirmed that normal snorkeling and even scuba diving would be covered, provided that the activity wasn’t done in a way that would make it an extreme or high-risk activity, like free diving or scuba diving at depths below 60 feet or without a dive master. (However, you should always contact Allianz directly if you want to confirm coverage for your situation or have any questions.)

They currently have three plans with both medical and travel benefits for single vacations: OneTrip Basic , OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier . Each of these should cover regular, safe snorkeling and have various coverages not only for emergency medical expenses, but dental expenses, emergency medical transportation, trip cancellation/delay, baggage issues, etc. Or, if you are only interested in medical benefits, their OneTrip Emergency Medical plan will come in a bit cheaper without the travel benefits.

Additionally, Allianz does not have an age limit for individuals which you can cover with one of their policies. That’s definitely not always the case with travel medical insurance, so it’s a really nice option if traveling with parents or grandparents (or yourself!) who are over 70.

However, these specific Allianz Travel Insurance products aren’t available to those outside of the United States (there are separate and different Allianz international versions out there, though) and they generally have a more expansive list of what is considered an extreme, high-risk sport or activity with exclusions like bungee jumping, some rafting/kayaking, hang gliding, etc. So, if you’re outside the U.S. or want to include more activities in your coverage, World Nomads above may offer the type of coverage you’re looking for.

Allianz also offers online quotes, only needing your age, travel dates, destination, state of residence and total trip cost to give you a price. From there, you’re also able to buy a policy since everything can be done online and the coverage documents are emailed directly to you.

For U.S.-based travelers over 70, Allianz is a travel insurance that covers snorkeling and you can get a quote from Allianz Travel Insurance online here before your next snorkeling trip.

The Deep Dive

Personally, I won’t travel without travel medical insurance anymore. The risk (however big or small it might be) of never being able to travel or snorkel again because of a financial or physical problem that could have been prevented just isn’t worth it as far as I see it. And, with travel medical insurance often being relatively inexpensive (I’ve had 3-week trips across multiple hemispheres covered well for two people for less than a hundred bucks), it’s a no-brainer for me.

It’s always a good idea to check directly with an insurance provider to make sure that they cover what you need to cover, but World Nomads or Allianz are options if I’m looking to make sure that snorkeling (and whatever else I might be doing) is covered. You can read up on each company and get a quote from World Nomads if you’re under 70, or a quote from Allianz if someone in your group is 70 or above, to see which works best for you before your trip. Safe travels!

Healix Insurance Services Ltd, on behalf of Hamilton Insurance DAC, arranges this Travel Insurance policy for Jade Stanley Ltd. Hamilton Insurance DAC is registered in Ireland No. 484148, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, and subject to limited regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority in connection with their UK branch. Jade Stanley Ltd is registered in England and Wales under No. 03570857 and authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under No. 306205.

One particular form of Free Diving involves participants trying to reach large depths, stay underwater for periods, or cover great distances on a single lungful of air.

In certain cultures, Free Diving was and still is a means of gathering food from the bottom of the sea, collecting pearls, or looking for treasures in a sunken ship.

Even in Ancient Greece, Free Diving was described as a commercial activity, and sponges were mentioned as bathing aids by both Homer and Plato.

Competitive Free Diving is a modern sport that consists of various disciplines.

There are numerous categories, ranging from free immersion apnea to no-limits apnea to dynamic apnea with and without fins.

This adventure sport is regulated by two governing bodies: CMAS and AIDA, each with its own rules regarding record attempts.

They want to enjoy diving as a leisurely activity, not restricted by rules or equipment.

Free Diving has many advantages: no equipment is needed, making it a cheap sport; Divers are much faster and much more flexible; no preparation is required, and there are no obstructing air bubbles or distracting sounds.

Cave Diving may also be done as a free dive (although it generally happens with Scuba Diving gear).

Free Diving can be done by anyone who can swim, but more experienced divers will be more successful.

Specific breath-holding techniques can be acquired and used through practice, which can significantly prolong the dive.

Common Injuries

There is one obvious risk involved with Free Diving, especially during deep dives: the risk of running out of oxygen before reaching the surface again.

Other well-documented risks include shallow water blackouts, a physical condition that causes divers to faint underwater, which without oxygen tanks is often lethal, and hyperventilation, which makes divers think and feel like they have more oxygen in their bodies than they do.

Free Diving accidents are almost always related to suffocation. Therefore, if you need First Aid or need to be transported to a hospital, you must have the proper Travel Insurance.

The beauty and freedom of Free Diving lie in the fact that no expensive equipment is needed.

However, some people like to use fins to increase their area of movement, while most people prefer goggles to improve visibility.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions and plan to participate in Free Diving ,  we can provide you with a policy.

Our provider  (Adventures)  can offer travel insurance, including Free Diving if you have a pre-existing medical condition.

Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship strike; construction crew missing: Live updates

BALTIMORE − A massive search effort was underway Tuesday for six construction workers who were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore when it was struck by a large cargo ship and collapsed into the Patapsco River, shutting down a critical artery for East Coast shipping , authorities said.

Around 1:30 a.m. a vessel leaving the Port of Baltimore struck the Key Bridge, causing it to collapse in seconds. Officials said the crew warned of a power issue and sent out a "mayday" before the collision. Footage of the incident shows the cargo ship smash into one of the columns before the bridge snapped, hit the water and partially fell on the ship, where a burst of flames and smoke could be seen rising into the night sky.

Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time of impact and plunged into the river, which was measured Tuesday at 48 degrees, cold enough to cause hypothermia. There were multiple contractors on the bridge who were repairing potholes, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said. So far two people have been rescued. One was unharmed and the other remains in "very serious condition," he said.

The crew who were on the ship when it hit the bridge remained on the ship, which needed to be assessed for damage before rescuers could board it, said James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department. The vessel was carrying cargo for the major shipping company Maersk and was headed for Sri Lanka.

A senior U.S. official told USA TODAY that the ship apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge. Authorities have not stated an official cause for the incident, but Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in a news conference the crew notified authorities “of a power issue" as it was traveling about 9 miles per hour. He said the crash seems to be an "accident" and added that the bridge was "up to code."

Moore said once the mayday was issued, officials onsite stopped cars from coming over the bridge. "These people are heroes," he said. "They saved lives last night."

Developments:

∎  The University of Maryland Medical Center's trauma center treated one patient from the collapse who has been discharged, Michael Schwartzberg, the medical center's spokesperson, said in an email. Schwartzberg declined to say more about the person's injuries, citing patient privacy concerns.

∎  The National Transportation Safety Board is scheduled to hold a news conference about its investigation into the incident at 1 p.m.

∎ Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott issued a state of emergency in order to better mobilize resources and mobilizing "resources and working swiftly to "address this crisis," he said in a post on X . The governor of Maryland issued a state of emergency earlier Tuesday.

'We're with you': Biden says federal government will rebuild bridge

President Joe Biden said he intends for the federal government to cover the entire cost to rebuild the Key Bridge, and he committed not to leave “until this job gets done.”

“We're with you. We're going to stay with you as long as it takes,” Biden said Tuesday afternoon from the White House Roosevelt Room.

Biden said he spoke with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other local and state officials about the bridge’s collapse, and said he would visit the site in the future. “I told them we're going to send all the federal resources they need as we respond to this emergency − I mean all the federal resources. And we're going to rebuild that port together.”

Biden said eight people remain unaccounted for, but the figure might change. Two people were rescued. "Everything so far indicates that his was a terrible accident,” Biden said, adding there’s no reason to believe it was intentional.

“Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families, especially those waiting for news of their loved ones right now,” Biden said. “I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime.”

Biden said the ongoing rescue operation remains the top priority but relayed that he told Moore he has directed his team to “move heaven and earth to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible."

Crewman reports all on board Dali are safe

This past weekend, Andrew Middleton took the ship's captain and a crewman shopping at a nearby Walmart. Since 9/11, international crews have to be escorted by a vetted person through most port areas, and Middleton said it's fairly common for crews like the Dali's to request assistance from the Apostleship of the Sea Baltimore Stella Maris International Seafarers' Center, where he is the director. The group is part of the Catholic Church's Archdiocese of Baltimore.

"They were by all appearances in good spirits," Middleton said, and they chatted in his van about the ship's planned 28-day voyage around the Horn of Africa to Sri Lanka. Middleton said crews usually buy personal toiletries and snacks before long trips.

Middleton woke up Tuesday morning to the shocking news the ship hit the bridge, and he immediately messaged one of the crewmen via WhatsApp. "My question to him was, 'Is everyone OK?' And the answer was, 'Yes sir, everyone is safe,'" Middleton told USA TODAY.

The crew is still aboard the ship while authorities assess the situation. Middleton said he's prepared to send them any supplies they need if they're stuck aboard for an extended period. And he said he's making plans to help them once they're freed and returned to shore. He said he expects the Dali will be towed back into the harbor and docked for a damage assessment. Middleton added that he worries both about the missing workers from the bridge and also the port workers who may be temporarily unemployed if the harbor gets shut down.

"Obviously, this incident has a large impact on the port community,'' he said. "If this extends a long period of time, we're going to have longshoreman and stevedores who are not working, tugboat crews who are not working. It has the potential, if it becomes a drawn-out event, to affect many lives."

− Trevor Hughes

'It's devastating to the city'

Greg Trenchard, 43, awoke Tuesday to a flurry of text messages and missed calls from his out of state relatives checking in on him after hearing about the Key Bridge collapse.

“I’ve driven over it 100 times and now to see that it’s gone is pretty crazy,” he said Tuesday.

Trenchard, an auditor, said he then tried to make his way to Fort Armistead Park, where he’d come many times before to take photos of the bridge at sunrise and sunset. But the normally quick drive took nearly 40 minutes due to the traffic detours, and a police roadblock next to Royal Farms, a convenience store, about a mile and half from the park stopped him from getting any closer to the scene.

“It’s a blow,” he said of the collapse. “It’s devastating to the city, it’s devastating to port traffic and everything they’re trying to do to revitalize the shipping industry in Maryland and keep that going.”

Air, land and water search underway

Multiple local, state and federal agencies are coordinating the massive search, which spans a vast section of the river – both above and below the surface of the water – and the ship itself, Wallace said. Divers, helicopters and sonar technology were being used and had located several vehicles submerged in the river, which is about 50-feet-deep where the bridge collapsed.

"This water is current influenced, so right now we think the tide is coming back in," he said.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and said he is working with an interagency team to "quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration."

"This is an unthinkable tragedy," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news conference.

Expert says river current makes search more difficult

Jim Bellingham, the executive director for the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy and expert in marine robotics lives in nearby Fells Point, and talked to USA TODAY about some of the challenges faced by rescuers.

“Nothing is staying put in the ocean,” he said. “Everything is moving” in the Patapsco River, a tidal estuary, which presents just one difficulty for rescue efforts. Rescuers would have to determine the speed and direction of the current to figure out where to search – toward Baltimore Harbor, or out toward the Chesapeake Bay.

Bellingham said it’s likely any workers who may have been on the bridge would have been wearing reflective vests and even flotation devices that would improve visibility in the dark river. They might also have flares, and are more easily spotted by rescue helicopters.

Rescuers are using sonar, lights, cameras and robotic machinery as well as human divers, but Bellingham said divers would face their own risks, as the wreckage might not be stable.

The longer the search goes on, the less likely rescuers are to find survivors, given the temperature of the water, and the likelihood of people being trapped with little to no air. But Baltimore, with many Navy and Coast Guard facilities and military contractors nearby, might be as well prepared to deal with the disaster as any place.

“Their job is to rescue people,” Bellingham said. “They want to believe they can do that, and there’s a tendency not to want to give up.”

– Phaedra Trethan

Cargo ship was headed for Sri Lanka

The container vessel was chartered by the major shipping company Maersk and was carrying its cargo, according to a statement from the company. When it crashed into the bridge, no Maersk crew and personnel were onboard the vessel, which is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and owned by Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte.

The Dali was slated to arrive later this week in Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic, a global ship tracking service.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement. "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Synergy Marine Corp said the Dali collided with one of the pillars of the bridge and that all its crew members, including two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Erin Palmer said at a news conference Tuesday that the agencies remain focused on search-and-rescue. She did not comment on the crew of the ship or provide additional details about the collision.

All vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore was suspended until further notice, but the port is still open for truck transports, Wiedefeld said. Traffic, meanwhile, is being diverted from the area around the Key Bridge.

Baltimore port closed to ships 'until further notice'

Shortly after the bridge collapse, the Port of Baltimore suspended vessel traffic “until further notice,” according to its website.

“This does not mean the Port of Baltimore is shut down. We are still processing trucks inside of our terminals,” the statement said.

But Bloomberg reported that the port “looks to be out of commission indefinitely.”

At least 40 ships are now more or less trapped inside the port, according to Reuters. At least 30 other ships planned to arrive there.

“They will likely have to reroute shipping to other ports on the East Coast,” said Kevin Linderman, a professor and supply chain expert at Pennsylvania State University. “However, this will put additional demand on these ports, and shippers may not be able to access US markets” as efficiently, he said.

“One critical question is, can the other ports handle the products that were destined to Baltimore?”

– Daniel de Visé

Will the Baltimore bridge collapse impact cruises?

Baltimore is a destination for several major cruise lines. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival have April sailings that could be impacted by the bridge collapse, according to their websites.

Carnival told USA TODAY it was premature to comment on impacts to future sailings.

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website. The cruise line told USA TODAY their schedules remain unaffected but will make adjustments if needed to future cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September.

– Eve Chen and Nathan Diller

Will the port shutdown affect consumer goods, prices?

Several big firms have distribution warehouses near the port, including Amazon and FedEx, one analyst noted in a tweet on X.

Even so, some analysts predict only a minimal impact on the movement of goods up and down the East Coast from the bridge collapse.

Baltimore’s port holds just 4% of all East Coast trade volume, according to S&P Global. New York’s port, by contrast, does 38% of that business.

Yet, the port offers the deepest harbor in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, is closer to the Midwest than any other East Coast port, and is within an overnight drive of one-third of the US population, according to the port website .

The port boasts five public and 12 private terminals. In 2023, it ranked first in the nation in handling automobiles and light trucks.

“For the American consumer, the biggest impact will be felt in terms of imported motor vehicles,” said Jason Miller, a business professor at Michigan State University. If sales remain strong, he said, “we could see inventories drop on the lots of dealers that sell imported vehicles until alternative arrangements can be made. This could increase motor vehicle prices for some makes and models.”

Alternate routes around collapsed Baltimore bridge

The Maryland Transportation Authority was suggesting drivers take Interstate 95 or Interstate 895 as alternatives to the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge along Interstate 695.

“I-695 Outer Loop closed at MD 10 (exit 2) and Inner Loop closed at MD 157/Peninsula Exp (exit 43),” MDTA said in a post on X.

Drivers could take several other, longer routes around Baltimore, but I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) and I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) are the most direct alternatives across the water.

There are few exceptions.

MDTA notes, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

How cold is the Patapsco River?

The Patapsco River is about 50 feet deep where the ship hit the bridge, officials said during a press conference Tuesday morning. Part of the 39-mile river helps form the Baltimore Harbor, just northwest of the bridge collapse, and it flows out to the Chesapeake Bay.

A buoy in the Patapsco River indicated the water temperature Tuesday morning was currently about 47 degrees, while the air is around 41 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Whereas hypothermia is thought to occur at very cold temperatures, it can occur in waters below 70 degrees, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Key Bridge collapse draws comparisons to Florida's Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse

In 1980, a Florida bridge also collapsed after a ship collided with it, leading to the deaths of 35 motorists and bus passengers.

A 1,200-foot chunk of the Sunshine Skyway bridge – which connects St. Petersburg and Bradenton – collapsed after the massive Summit Venture freighter slammed into one of its central support piers.

When the section of the bridge fell into Tampa Bay, it took a truck, seven cars and a Greyhound bus with it.

The Herald-Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported the crash happened during an intense thunderstorm , with winds reaching 80 mph and heavy rain. At the time, visibility was near-zero, according to local historians who made a documentary film about the collapse.

After the collapse, the freighter remained stuck beneath the bridge, with part of the roadway on top of its bow. Photos from the time also show how one motorist was able to skip his car to a stop just inches away from where the bridge fell into the water.

How vital is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, named for the author of the "Star Spangled Banner," is a 1.6-mile, 4-lane bridge that crosses over the Patapsco River, according to the MDTA. It opened in 1977.

The port’s private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

The span is the outermost of three major Patapsco River crossings at Baltimore Harbor, according to the American Civil Engineering Society. The steel-arched bridge, with a total length of 8,636 feet, was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the world when it was built and remains the second longest in the United States and third in the world, according to the society .

SINGAPORE – When engineer Dave Peh, 30, retrieved his luggage from the baggage claim carousel at London’s Heathrow Airport in January, the last thing he expected to see was a giant dent in its side.

This is what he thought he had hedged against by purchasing travel insurance, especially since it was his first time taking the luggage for a spin.

PH Ports Authority warns Holy Week commuters vs. travel insurance scam

As millions of ship passengers are expected to travel this Holy Week, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Tuesday warned passengers against falling victim to travel insurance scammers.

PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte said two victims, a mother and her child, paid P500 to an individual offering them travel insurance at the Manila North Port Passenger Terminal on Monday.

"May mga hindi natin maiwasan na mga tao na nagbebenta online at mga nagbebenta sa labas ng pantalan ng mga travel insurance. Paalala po natin sa ating mga kababayan, itong travel insurance ay kasama na po sa ticket na inyong binili. Ibig sabihin, hindi na po kailangang magbabayad pa ng additional na anumang halaga para sa travel insurance," Samonte told GMA Integrated News in a phone interview.

(There are individuals selling travel insurance online, and outside of port areas. May we remind our countrymen that travel insurance is part of the tickets you purchase. That means you don't need to pay any additional fees for travel insurance.)

Samonte said the peak period of Holy Week travel is likely on Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday, when nearly 300,000 passengers per day are expected at all ports in the country.

Earlier in the day, Samonte told Unang Balita that over 2 million passengers were projected to travel by sea during Holy Week .

Meanwhile, passengers were advised to be at the ports two to three hours before their scheduled departure.

Samonte also advised passengers to avoid bringing items that may be confiscated.

"Hanggang ngayon, may mga nakukumpiska pa tayo na mga kitchen knife at saka po yung mga flammable material, mga gas at butane. 'Yun po ang pinakakaraniwan nating nakukumpiska. Sana po huwag na pong magdala ng mga ganitong bagay ang ating mga kababayan," she said.

(Until now, kitchen knives and flammable materials like gas and butane have been confiscated. These are the usual items we confiscate. We ask our countrymen to refrain from bringing these things.)

Travelers were also advised to pack light amid tighter security at all ports.

"Dahil nga mas mahigpit ang seguridad natin sa mga pantalan, mas maigi pa rin po kung kakaunting gamit na lang ‘yung dalhin nila dahil daraan po yang lahat sa X-ray machine at saka po sa matinding screening," Samonte added.

(Because of heightened security in our ports, it is better to travel light because all belongings will pass through x-ray machines and strict screening.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Car insurance costs to keep rising in 2024 – pay less in these US states

Three ways to help keep your auto insurance affordable.

For car insurance, 2024 will bring more of the same problems drivers faced last year. ( iStock )

Drivers can expect much of the same this year for car insurance, with premiums continuing to soar and shopping options still constrained by providers ducking out of certain markets, according to a recent  report  from the Zebra.

Drivers paid an average of $1841 to insure a car in 2023, or 5% more than they did the previous year. That comes after a 15% jump between 2022 and 2023. Unfortunately, according to the report, 2024 is likely to bring more of the same.

More of the same factors driving increases in the previous two years are pushing costs up this year. Inflation has impacted auto repair costs, and drivers are submitting bigger claims. Extreme weather continues to be a factor contributing to increasing costs, as well as rising car thefts. With no relief in sight, drivers can expect to pay more for insurance premiums.

"I can say rates are high due to the record amount of catastrophic weather events over the last few years," Hunter Black, an insurance agent at The Zebra said. "Also, insurance carriers gave out stipends during Covid and saw record auto claims once the pandemic ended due to more cars on the road. All of this affected insurance carriers' loss ratios in a negative way, so increasing rates will help recover those losses."

If you are looking to save money on your car costs, you could consider changing your auto insurance provider to get a lower monthly rate. Visit Credible to shop around and find your personalized premium .

SOCIAL SECURITY: COLA INCREASING BUT MEDICARE COSTS RISING TOO IN 2024

These states will see the biggest increases in 2024

Where you live can significantly impact how much you pay for insurance. For example, states that are more affected by climate-related disasters have seen a higher incidence of insurance providers pulling out or writing new policies, leaving buyers with fewer options for insurance shopping.

The make and model of a vehicle has also greatly impacted car insurance costs. Drivers of Kia and Hyundai cars have had difficulty insuring these vehicles because of the high incidence of theft of certain models.

Florida and Louisiana top the list of states with the highest annual premiums. Drivers here pay an average premium of over $2,700 per year. That's 47% more than the national average. Drivers in Vermont and Idaho pay the least, with annual premiums registering 35% below the national average. Drivers in 19 states now pay an average of more than $2,000 a year in auto insurance premiums.

Are you shopping around for new auto insurance? The Credible marketplace can help you compare multiple providers and find your personalized rate in minutes without affecting your credit score.

How you can save money on insurance

Americans won't get any relief from insurance prices in 2024, but drivers can still save money by looking for new opportunities to save with their current carrier or by switching. These are some other options to consider for keeping your auto insurance affordable:

If you are struggling with rising prices and want to save money, you could consider finding a new auto insurance provider to lower your monthly premium. Visit Credible to compare multiple car insurance providers at once and choose the one with the best rate for you.
