As a longtime Styx fan, I was hesitant to go. After all, without Tommy Shaw and James Young, it's no quite the same, right? And many of my favorite Styx songs had Tommy on vocals, anyway.

First, I was absolutely stunned at how good Dennis sounded (both vocally and on keyboards). Time has not diminished him at all.

His backing band was exceptional, too, particularly August (didn't catch his last name), who was one of the guitarists an also sang Tommy's parts (including Renegade, Crystal Ball, and Blue Collar Man). He sounded GREAT on the songs and the whole band really nailed the songs.

Still can't get over how good Dennis sounded, and at 68 I hope I have that much energy and am that spry!!

Highly recommended!!

Very enjoyable show. Dennis' voice sounded great and he has a wonderful sense of humor.

I have been a Styx fan for 40 years and have seen the band with and sadly without Dennis, and I thought the "Music of Styx" show was excellent.

I only hope I have Dennis' level of energy when I am 70.

This was my first visit and concert at the Goodyear Theater and I really enjoyed this venue. I would like to see more classic rock shows there.

The show was absolutely magnificent. So good to see Dennis DeYoung live on stage again doing all of Styx greatest hits and Grand Illusion album. The venue was quite crowded but I would easily forgive that in the face of a great show as he delivered that night.

At 72 Dennis DeYoung stills rocks. The band that he has put together sounds better the the original Styx. August Zadra who sings the Tommy Shaw songs sounds better than Tommy himself. Go see Dennis when he is near you, you won't be disappointed.

I saw Styx without Tommy Shaw and was disappointed because I love Tommy shaw but Mr. DeYoung put on one hell of a show in the early 90's at Universal Studios L A. I would love to see him again because he is such a talent.

DENNIS DEYOUNG: TOMMY SHAW Said 'No' To STYX Reunion Tour

Ex- STYX vocalist and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung has once again said that he wants to reunite with his former bandmates for one final tour.

DeYoung , the voice behind such STYX classics as "Come Sail Away" , "Best Of Times" , "Pieces Of Eight" and "Babe" , spoke about his previous group while chatting with Joe Rock of Long Island, New York's 102.3 WBAB radio station .

Asked if he is still hoping for a reunion of STYX 's classic lineup, Dennis said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I've been riding that bandwagon for the last five or six years, but to no avail. Really, the people that are vested, the promoters around the country, have this past year gone through back channels to see if there was interest. 'Cause everybody, every STYX fan would like to see that one more time. And one person spoke, and it was Tommy [ Shaw , STYX guitarist/vocalist], and he said 'No.' I don't know why; it makes no sense to me.

"We owe the fans who made us what we are today — rich, successful human beings — one last opportunity to experience Moe , Larry , Curly and Shemp , when he's available, to come out there and see 'em," he continued, referring to "The Three Stooges" , one of the most successfully comedy acts in history.

"It's not in my hands. I have no ax to grind. I have no hatchets to bury. I have nothing. I wanna go out and do it. It's not me. So, please send your cards and letters to the appropriate address."

DeYoung co-founded STYX as a teenager alongside his neighbors Chuck and John Panozzo in the early 1970s. James Young joined shortly after that, with Shaw coming on board in 1975.

Three years ago, Shaw likened STYX 's relationship with DeYoung to a divorce. "You get married when you're young and everything's rosy," he told "The Big Interview" . "Then, as you start to get a little older, you realize you didn't have that much in common and then you go through a tough divorce… We still have songs that we co-wrote together, and those are our children, and we've managed to find a way to keep those things in play."

Shaw went on to say that he is content to let the past remain in the past, choosing instead to surround himself with positivity as he enters the next part of his career. He continued: "Personality-wise, at this stage in my life, I want to be happy. I want to be around people who love me and that have my best interest at heart, and I don't have to fight with. There's just not enough years left that I would want to risk not having that again."

DeYoung will release his final studio album, "26 East, Vol 2" , on June 11 via Frontiers Music Srl .

Dennis DeYoung interview: 'no band has worked harder than Styx at diminishing its own reputation'

Former Styx singer Dennis DeYoung on bowing out, new album 26 East Vol 2, and the disappointment of no last Styx reunion tour

Dennis DeYoung

He has made many great albums, and now he has made his last. Dennis DeYoung is bowing out gracefully at the age of 74 with a solo record, 26 East Vol 2 , that recalls his finest work from the 70s and 80s as singer, pianist and primary songwriter for Styx .

Speaking to Classic Rock from his home in Chicago, the city where he was born on February 18, 1947, DeYoung talks like a wiseguy from a mob movie, a stark contrast to the high, pure singing voice heard on those classic songs – Lady, Come Sail Away, Babe, The Best Of Times – that made Styx a multimillion-selling phenomenon in the golden age of melodic rock. He also has plenty to say for himself.

“I have a lot of great stories,” he says. “I tell myself that so I can just keep talking.”

There is much joking and laughter as he tells these stories, and twice he breaks into song. His mood changes only when he discusses his departure from Styx in 1999, and the band’s refusal to reunite with him for one last tour. But “I’ve had a great career”, he says proudly. And with 26 East Vol 2 , it’s ending on a high note

Alt

So this is it, Dennis – your final album.

Unless I turn into Kiss ! But yeah, this is it. I gave it my best shot, and I always did. I’ve always been so neurotic and consumed with being the best I can, and it’s made me successful and miserable at the same time.

Why end your career now?

I grew up in the greatest time in the history of mankind to be a musician. But now, the music business is shite. Do I have to explain this to you? I don’t think so. The change is not in me. The change is in the culture. The deck is heavily stacked against people in rock music, and particularly old farts like myself.

But you’re still making great music, with last year’s 26 East Vol 1, and now Vol 2. And on both albums you worked with former Survivor legend Jim Peterik – another old fart!

When I first got the offer from Frontiers Records to do Vol 1 I didn’t want to do it. Why should somebody in his seventies still be annoying the public? That’s what I thought. But Jim Peterik talked me into it, the sonofabitch! And I’m glad he did. He and I have known each other a long time, and we really connected on these records. It was all good – except for that time he kicked my dog.

Are you retiring from music, period, or will you still go out and perform live?

I’m not retiring. And if the spirit moves me I might write a song from time to time and put it out through Apple or whoever the local robber baron is. But I’m not going to go through the tortuous effort of making a complete album again, because my audience will go: “Hey, that’s nice, Dennis,” pat me on the head and then say: “Please play Come Sail Away.”

This is a fact for all classic rockers. The people who still support us are emotionally bound to the music of their youth, which is true of all generations. So if people want more music they should go ask the Talking Heads .

You made so many great albums with Styx. Which is the best?

Top three: Equinox, The Grand Illusion and Paradise Theatre . But of course The Grand Illusion is our best album. Anyone who wants to argue about it, don’t come to my door. I’ll make them look silly.

And the worst?

Our third record, The Serpent Is Rising . It had this song Jonas Psalter , which I wrote about a pirate for God’s sake! Listen, I love Long John Silver, but Jesus Christ, I don’t have an eye patch! I was trying to fit in with the prog-rock thing. But it felt disingenuous, inauthentic.

Why do such a thing?

Our second album [ Styx II ] was a huge failure, and I was crushed. I thought: “Oh my God, I suck! People hate what I do.” So with the next two albums I tried to be anybody but Dennis DeYoung.

So what changed?

Everything changed when Lady was a hit. [Sings] ‘ Lady, when you’re with me I’m smiling! ’ It was the first song I ever wrote, and when we put it on the second album nobody at radio played it. But three years later it became a hit, and then it was: “They like me!”

So I took the reins in Styx, and we came up with Equinox , which was a breakthrough. I did not do that by myself, I did it with the help and the talents of the other people in the band. But I was the guy who said: “This is the way to go, follow me, and if I screw up just hit me over the head with a shovel and bury me.”

You didn’t screw up .

I did not. Styx had a wonderful run. We made some records people liked, but my dream was always to just please my mom. My mother was Italian, and I was the firstborn, so all the hopes and dreams of mom were on me. That’s the truth. People who are very ambitious are trying to please somebody who can’t be pleased.

You married you wife Suzanne in 1970. Was she the inspiration for all those classic Styx ballads?

Every single one is about our relationship. When we met, she was fifteen and I was seventeen. It’s the only love we’ve ever known. What I didn’t understand when I was writing those songs is that there are a number of people in the world who absolutely hate romantic ballads and slam what they call the mushiness, the cheesiness, the treacle. And you know what I say to those people? “Fuck off!”

Steady on, Dennis!

Well, maybe I shouldn’t say fuck off to these people, it’s just their personal taste. But, ah, what the hell. And here’s the thing about Styx – we weren’t pussies. We rocked! You want the rough stuff? [Sings the AC/DC song] ‘ Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap! ’ Not bad, huh?

But here’s my definition of songwriting. I started out as a kid with an accordion, dreaming. I’m a melody man in a rhythm age. All I ever wanted to do was find some chords and attach lyrics to them and then give you my point of view, hoping that you find yourself in my story. That’s what songwriting is. And inclusive in that is my relationship with the love of my life. So I don’t want to feel like I have to apologise for that, because when you’re lying on your deathbed, love is the only thing that matters.

Last year, during lockdown, you performed one of those love songs, The Best Of Times , in a video that racked up more than a million views on YouTube. And the words in that song took on a deeper resonance in that period of isolation: ‘ I know you feel these are the worst of times, I do believe it’s true/When people lock their doors and hide inside, rumour has it it’s the end of Paradise .’

Well, I guess you may now refer to me as ‘Nostradamus DeYoung’, if you don’t mind. But at first, when I saw all these other needy performers doing videos during the pandemic because they couldn’t stand the fact that people weren’t looking at them, I thought: “Do I need to pull my pants down here? I don’t want to.”

But a friend talked to me about the lyrics of The Best Of Times , and I said: “Well there’s some dumb stupid luck!” So I did the video, and it got 1.2 million views! And the comments had me in tears. I couldn’t believe the wonderful things people were saying about me, and what that song means to them.

A boost for your ego?

Listen, my ego’s big enough. Ask anybody. I know I have talent.

So you don’t need anyone blowing smoke up your ass?

Oh no, I love it! Who doesn’t want smoke blown up their ass? I’m just saying I didn’t know that people felt that way about me.

Well now you know. And you must also know that the majority of Styx fans would love to see you rejoin the band. So what is the real story there?

I’ve tried, in vain, to be in that band from the moment they replaced me. In the beginning it was my band, my idea, but now it’s really Tommy Shaw’s band. I’ve said that we should do one last tour together, for those people who made us rich men. They know I’m ready to do it. And recently it was floated as a possibility. But Tommy Shaw was the only one who spoke, and he said no.

Tommy has also said: “In retrospect, we weren’t even happy working with each other in our heyday.” What are your thoughts on that?

Let me tell you, all this stuff they said about me was the biggest exaggerated bunch of lies I’ve ever seen in my life. We liked each other. We never had a punch-up. We never screamed at each other. We weren’t those guys. We made music together. So when you cast aspersions – not only on my musical contributions, but also on my character – it’s been the greatest heartbreak in my career.

Do you also feel that Styx’s legacy has been tainted by all this?

I can’t think of a band that’s worked harder than Styx at diminishing its own reputation, and to denigrate the music that we created together. And it serves no purpose. Our fans loved us because what we did musically was very uplifting and positive. That’s what we stood for. And to harm that in any way is insane. Not to give the fans one last glimpse of us together on stage, it makes no sense to me. And I know that all Styx fans would want to see that one more time.

It’s very simple: Styx isn’t Styx without Dennis DeYoung .

You know, it’s lucky that there’s a pandemic, because I would have to fly to England and kiss you on the lips for saying that! But look, this is not about me, it’s not about money, it’s to relive, and reinforce, what lucky sonofabitches we were to find each other. And show the people that we appreciate what you’ve done for us. I’m sick over the fact that we can’t do it one more time, but what am I going to do? I just can’t for the life of me understand it.

At least you now understand what your music means to people .

You don’t know how much. And I have to thank Jim Peterik for forcing me to make these records, because I would have never heard what you just said to me, or known what I know now from Styx fans. When people open up their hearts and tell me: “This is what you mean to me,” I just think: “Man, am I glad my mom gave me accordion lessons.”

26 East Vol 2 is out now via Frontiers Records .

CONCERT REVIEW: STYX Defies The Odds and Ages and Keeps Rocking In The Paradise – Pikes Peak Center, Colorado Springs (February 25th, 2023)

dennis deyoung tour 2023

Some of the bands I go to see live have been part of my life soundtrack for a very long time. Styx falls into that category. I first heard 1975’s “Equinox” LP in my brother’s room when I was 8 years old. By then, I had probably heard “Lady” on the radio but it was “Suite Madame Blue,” with its progressive rock heavy ending, that really got me hooked. Although “Equinox” was the fifth studio record of the band, it was still prior to the arrival of Tommy Shaw , who in my book is what made Styx something special. The following year, an 8-track of “Crystal Ball” took up residence in our family car stereo, and with it that wonderfully melancholy title track that Tommy Shaw sang and wrote.

dennis deyoung tour 2023

In the years to come I would purchase records of each of the subsequent blockbuster albums like “The Grand Illusion,” “Pieces of Eight,” “Cornerstone” and then the cassette of “Paradise Theatre.” Years later, I would replace the entire Styx catalog with CD versions. Now they’re on my phone. The point is to reveal just how enduring the music has been in my life; it’s lasted longer than three other musical formats. And while the critics never cared for Styx much, the Chicago band mostly made all the right moves for this listener, especially when they steered toward the heavier songs.

Dennis DeYoung is still not part of the touring band, and in all honesty, I see the band moving forward in a positive direction without him, though credit is rightfully due in recognizing that he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s classic tunes. Much like there are those who will say Journey isn’t Journey without Steve Perry , there are fans who can’t accept Styx without DeYoung . But the band’s last two records, “The Mission” and “Crash of the Crown,” have earned places that rank quite high in the overall catalog. I believe it. And so does the band, apparently, because they played more songs from the newest record than any other album in the vast catalog during the two-set show in Colorado Springs Saturday night.

dennis deyoung tour 2023

As one might expect, most of the “rock essentials” were also in the set list, but the fact that the band opened each of the two sets with a track from 2021’s “Crash of the Crown” is a testament to how strongly they feel about their new music. And for a band that’s been around for over 50 years, that’s pretty astounding. Most bands that have been at it this long are mostly playing the golden oldies, but Styx performed 7 songs from their latest record, and they fit in perfectly with that classic Styx sound. Perhaps more remarkably, there was no mass run for beer or the bathroom. Shaw ’s vocals on the acoustic-based “Sound the Alarm” were particularly impressive.

So about that 50 years figure…one has to acknowledge that there have been some musical chairs played during that lengthy span. For most of the show, there was only one guy on stage who can claim to be a founding member. That would be James “JY” Young , who generally was more reserved on stage than in decades past. Nevertheless, Young tapped into another gear when he fronted the rousing rocker “Miss America,” and it was strong. At age 73, and having recently lost his dear wife, Suzanne , it was not surprising that he was a bit more demure. What was surprising, however, is the spark plug energy of Tommy Shaw , who at 69 was jumping around on stage and wailing on the guitar leads like an “Angry Young Man.” His stage presence and remarkably strong vocals served to “Light Up” the crowd. Props must go out to the entire band, who vocally still can serve up incredible harmonies that were on full display on “Lady,” and “To Those.” Legend has it they are still doing it without the aid of backing vocal tracks, and that deserves extra praise. Live music, the way it should be!

dennis deyoung tour 2023

The set-list was full of sing-alongs, of which the mature crowd eagerly joined in, and the band sounded surprisingly energized and tight. With Lawrence Gowan now having taken DeYoung ’s role on keyboards and vocals for more than two decades, this band has played many of these songs over and over, which could make them sound both tight and tired. But there were few signs of tired on stage, aside from the brief appearance of founding bass player Chuck Panozzo , who has maintained a very limited role with the band since declaring that he’s living with HIV. His replacement, Ricky Phillips , has been with the band for two decades now, and though he is 71 years old, you’d never believe it from watching him play. It’s a classy move that they give Chuck some stage time still.

The youngsters of the live act, drummer Todd Sucherman (who is absolutely amazing) and producer/writer “new guy” Will Evankovich , who has managed to conjure up the classic Styx sound on their last two releases, are keeping the spirit of the band running like a pair or “Renegades.”

dennis deyoung tour 2023

There’s always a fear when seeing a band that has been at it as long as Styx that they will put on a show that indicates they’ve stayed too long at the party and tarnished their legacy. But Styx with Tommy Shaw at the helm has maintained a professional standard and proven themselves to be a class act. I mention the ages of JY , Tommy and Ricky because they’ve done such a good job of not coming off as guys way past their prime. Styx is still a great live act playing a strong catalog of classics while proudly featuring new music that stands up and slots in well. Not many long running acts can say that.

The band made four stops in Colorado on this run, which is more than unusual, but ticket sales have been brisk and the fan support is still there. So regardless of whatever the critics might have to say about Styx , a couple thousand fans showed their approval on their feet all night as they were thrilled to be invited to “Come Sail Away” once more. If this is the last time they come through Colorado, I’ll be happy to have witnessed that they finished on a high note. Still worth seeing after all these years.

Styx Manager: Band Hasn’t Spoken to Dennis DeYoung Since Firing

According to Styx manager Charlie Brusco, the band hasn’t spoken to former singer Dennis DeYoung since he was fired in 1999.

During an appearance on The Bob Lefsetz Podcast , Brusco detailed DeYoung’s ousting from the group.

“ Tommy (Shaw) and J.Y. (James Young) came to me and said, ‘We got a new album coming out. Dennis can’t tour. We want to go out there without him,’” the manager recalled. “And I said, ‘Alright, if we do this – it could work, it might not work – but I’m not gonna go backwards. We’re not gonna go do this for six months and then turn around and go back [to DeYoung].”

According to Brusco, the rest of Styx could no longer handle DeYoung’s demanding ways. “Dennis likes to be in control of everything,” the manager matter-of-factly noted. Similar personality clashes had led to Styx’s two previous hiatuses, but in this case the band decided to simply fire their frontman. The job of telling DeYoung fell on Brusco.

How Dennis DeYoung Was Fired From Styx

“I called him on the phone and told him, and the reaction was not good,” the manager admitted, detailing his uncomfortable conversation with DeYoung. “And he said to me, ‘You know that no one will come to see them without me.’ And I go, ‘We’ll see. We’ll find out.’”

DeYoung was replaced by Lawrence Gowan, and the band has continued touring and releasing new music ever since. According to Brusco, Styx’s ties to DeYoung remain completely severed.

“I’m pretty sure of this: I don’t think me, Tommy or J.Y. have ever spoken to Dennis since I let him go,” he noted. “I don’t think the three of us have ever had a word with [DeYoung]. A good word or a bad word – nothing.”

Dennis DeYoung is still not part of the touring band, and in all honesty, I see the band moving forward in a positive direction without him, though credit is rightfully due in recognizing that he wrote or co-wrote many of the band's classic tunes.
