La Brea Tar Pits La Brea Tar Pits free

If your kids go crazy for dinosaurs – and really, what kid doesn't? – then a visit to La Brea Tar Pits is sure to be the highlight of their trip. And from the gooiest part of LA, more than 3.5 million fossils have been discovered. The adjoining museum houses many of the artifacts found at the tar pits; consequently, it is home to one of the largest collections of Ice Age fossils in the world. Greystone Mansion and Park Greystone Mansion and Park free

Greystone Mansion is one of the largest mansions in Beverly Hills and an important landmark for American cinema. The nearly 13-acre parcel of land was a wedding gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny to his son, Ned, in 1926. Construction on the mansion began in 1927 and took almost three years to complete. Greystone now represents a golden age in American cinema. Many films, including "The Big Lebowski" and "Ghostbusters," and television shows like "General Hospital" and "Gilmore Girls" have been shot on these gothic-inspired grounds.

Visitors can walk around the property and self-guided tours of the inside of the mansion are offered monthly. Many visitors say Greystone Mansion has stunning grounds with picturesque views. Travelers describe the park grounds as spectacular and enjoy learning which of their favorite movies and shows used Greystone as a backdrop.

Developed in the early 20th century, Venice Beach is modeled – canals and all – after its  namesake city in Italy . Admittedly, the experiment didn't live up to its Italian inspiration, but the neighborhood has become distinctly Californian, embodying the spirit of the wealthy, the alternative and the just plain bizarre. Rather than towering churches and intimate pizzerias, you'll find canal-side mansions near funky boutiques and restaurants.

California Through My Lens

18 Things to do in Hollywood

Hollywood, California is a huge tourist attraction that people come from all over the world to visit; however, it can be overwhelming since there is so much to see and do there. I have been exploring Los Angeles and Hollywood for years and put together some places that many first time visitors would want to see in the area. Check them out below and let me know what I left off in the comments.

Here is a video I made of my favorite spots.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

free places to visit in hollywood

While in Hollywood, pretty much everyone goes to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is worth seeing at least once with the stars in the ground and all of the lights from El Capitan Theater. It is not my favorite thing to do in Hollywood though, so I don’t get down there very often. That being said, the TCL Chinese Theater is worth the stop.

TCL Chinese Theater

free places to visit in hollywood

TCL Chinese Theater is the famous Hollywood movie theater you have seen at many premieres. You can still see a movie here or take a tour of the theater to learn the history. For most people, the exterior with all of the hand and footprints in the ground is the main attraction, and it is a lot of fun to see the famous actors and movie characters (R2D2) cemented into the ground outside the theater.

Hollywood Museum

free places to visit in hollywood

There are lots of museums near the Hollywood Walk of Fame, like the wax museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not. My favorite is the Hollywood Museum though, since it is dedicated to the movies. There have been many great exhibits here, including one on the Batman TV show that I loved.

Amoeba Record Store (no longer here, moving to a new location)

free places to visit in hollywood

I love record stores, and Amoeba is one I have been coming to for over a decade. The store is massive with so much to see and shop over the two floors. The highlight for me is always the used records, which are fun to sort through and look for hidden gems. There is free parking under the store as well, which is hard to find in Los Angeles.

Wacko Soap Plant

free places to visit in hollywood

Hollywood has a few fun stores that I always enjoy, and the first of these is Wacko Soap Plant. Much like the popular Archie Mchpees in Seattle, this store has aisles of unique and crazy gifts and souvenirs. There is a large mask section in the back, all sorts of figurines, and tons of books. They even have a small art gallery back of the store as well.

Read more about it here .

Time Travel Mart

free places to visit in hollywood

Time Travel Mart is another store that I love in Hollywood. It is a nonprofit that provides funding for an after-school program and does it in the most awesome way possible. The Time Travel Mart has gifts from throughout history and the future with everything from dinosaur eggs to robot oil on display. It is such a fun little store to walk around in, and its great that the purchases support a worthy cause as well.

Paramount Studio Tour

free places to visit in hollywood

When in Hollywood, most people want to experience movie culture, and one of the best ways to do that is through a studio tour. There are four tours, Sony, Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers. They are a little pricey, but it is a cool experience where you can explore old sets, see props, and learn about the movie-making process. If this is something you want to know more about while in Hollywood, then definitely do a studio tour.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

free places to visit in hollywood

Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the place where many stars have been buried over the years, and it has become a popular destination for tourists. Some of the most famous gravesites are those for Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille, and Mel Blanc.

Runyon Canyon

free places to visit in hollywood

Runyon Canyon is where people who live in Hollywood get out and stretch their legs. I avoided it for a long time as I figured it would not be a great hike, but I really enjoyed it when I went. It is an excellent spot in the city to watch the sunset, and some of the steep hills will get your blood pumping.

Griffith Observatory

free places to visit in hollywood

Griffith Observatory is probably my favorite place in Hollywood. It is free to visit, other than parking, and it has incredible views of downtown Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign. The observatory has many exciting exhibits to see, with my favorite being the Tesla Coil, and you can easily spend a few hours here. Do note it gets crazy busy on the weekends.

Mt Hollywood

free places to visit in hollywood

While at Griffith Observatory, consider hiking up to Mt Hollywood. Often confused with the hill that the Hollywood Sign is on (Mt Lee), this mountain is actually behind Griffith Observatory and gives you great views down on LA and the observatory. I have watched sunset here many times, and I always enjoy going back.

Mt Lee / Hollywood Sign

free places to visit in hollywood

If you are looking to get as close to the Hollywood Sign as possible, then you will want to take the hike up to Mt Lee. This is where the Hollywood Sign actually is. There are many ways to hike there, but my favorite is via the Wisdom Tree Trail. While you can’t get super close to the letters, it is incredible to be able to see them from a vantage point like this and its a must do in Hollywood for me.

Farmers Market / The Grove

free places to visit in hollywood

The old and permanent LA Farmers Market has been a favorite spot for decades. While it is showing its age, it is still a lot of fun to walk up and down the different vendors and grab some food. Of course, the main reason I go is for Bob’s Donuts, which are always excellent. The Farmers Market is right next to The Grove as well, which is a trendy mall if you want to do some shopping.

LA County Museum of Art

free places to visit in hollywood

LACMA is my favorite museum in the Hollywood area. This museum is massive, with all sorts of unique exhibits and sculptures. You can easily spend a half day exploring the museum and still not see everything. Even if you don’t have time to go in the museum, it is still worth going just to see the outdoor installations like the large rock known as Levitated Mass and Urban Lights, which is one of the most popular photos spots in Hollywood.

La Brea Tar Pits

free places to visit in hollywood

Right next to LACMA is the La Brea Tar Pits that are great to visit after the museum. The tar pits are a well-maintained part of the area’s history, and they are continually taking out new dinosaur bones from the many dig sites. The large tar area in the front shows what it would have been like back in the day, complete with mammoth sculptures stuck in the tar. If you sit there for a few minutes, you can even see the tar bubbling. Be sure to go into the museum as well where you can see all sorts of dinosaur bones they have taken from the tar.

Comedy Club

free places to visit in hollywood

If you are staying in Hollywood, then be sure to catch a comedy show. There are many popular spots for this, with the Comedy Store being the most famous. It’s a fun Hollywood experience, and you never know who might stop by for a surprise set. I once went to a show, and Louis C.K. came out to do a surprise set and test new material, so you never know who will show up.

There you have it, my favorite spots to explore in Hollywood. Let me know what I left off in the comments, and you can see some of my favorite Downtown LA spots here .

15 Best Free Things to Do in Los Angeles, CA

Written by Freddy Sherman Jun 30, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

The entertainment capital of the world is a great vacation destination because it just has so many things to see and do. Popular tourist attractions like Disneyland and Universal Studios are a lot of fun, but they also cost a lot of money. Fortunately, LA has a seemingly endless list of free things to do, and some just might surprise you.

Did you know it was free to visit Dodger Stadium on non-game days and sit in the Top Deck section and admire the view? Great LA museums like The Broad (modern art), The Getty Center (pre-1950s art), and the Griffith Observatory are all free, all the time. If you're a music lover, you might want to do a free, self-guided tour of Disney Hall, home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

A great free thing to do in LA is to hang out at the beach. All beaches in Los Angeles (and California), from Manhattan Beach all the way to Malibu, are completely free. Do a little something different and take a hike in Palos Verdes to visit Abalone Cove, home to one of the state's only black-sand beaches.

If you schedule your LA trip carefully, you can visit any of Los Angeles' many museums for free, as they all have one free day each month. In most cases, you'll need to make advance ticket reservations, but even though admission is free, they do charge for parking.

Plan your no-cost adventures around Los Angeles with our list of the top free things to do in LA.

1. Visit the Griffith Observatory, Space Museum, and Planetarium

2. marvel at artwork at the broad, 3. tour the walt disney concert hall, 4. visit the getty villa museum, 5. see great art at the getty center, 6. dodger stadium, 7. visit la museums for free, 8. touch a space shuttle at the california science center, 9. hike down to a hidden black-sand beach, 10. find inner peace at the japanese garden, 11. see steam locomotives at travel town museum, 12. attend a free music festival at santa monica beach, 13. take photos at urban light, lacma, 14. see the stars on hollywood boulevard, 15. hike through solstice canyon to the ocean, map of free things to do in los angeles, ca.

View of downtown Los Angeles from the Griffith Observatory at sunset

Perched atop the Hollywood Hills, a few hilltops south of the iconic Hollywood sign, the Griffith Observatory has a space and science museum, multiple telescopes, and a planetarium.

This is a great free thing to do in LA at night, as it's open until 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. These are also the only days the museum is open, opening at noon on Fridays and 10am on weekends.

The main draw here are the hourly star shows in what is considered the world's best planetarium . The Samuel Oschin Planetarium is a 290-seat domed, circular theater, with a Zeiss star projector and digital projection system that projects images, video, and the entire universe on the domed, aluminum ceiling. The shows are all hosted by an expert presenter and are part education and part Disney-like attraction experience.

If you visit during the evening, you also have a chance to look through the observatory's telescopes at various things in space, including planets, the moon, stars, and more.

You may want to visit just to walk around and admire the grounds and the spectacular views of Los Angeles. There are multiple Hollywood Hills trailheads here, which lead to other local landmarks and points of interest. The grounds and exterior can be visited anytime, even when the observatory is closed.

The Griffith Observatory is free. Parking in the official parking garage does cost money, but you can park on the street leading up to the observatory for free.

The Broad

A visit to The Broad, the newest mega-museum in LA , is a great free thing to do. Not only do you get to explore the museum's vast, world-class modern art collection (1950s to the present), you can enter the Infinity Mirrored Room and become the envy of both TikTok and Instagram.

The Broad's collection includes over 2,000 works from more than 200 artists, including masters like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Takashi Murakami, and Robert Rauschenberg. It's a kid-friendly place to visit, as a lot of the artwork is sculptural and three dimensional.

The Broad is located in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) and is within walking distance of fun areas to explore like Grand Park , the Old Bank District , Broadway, and the Arts District . Access to the general collections is free; admission is charged for special exhibitions and events.

Address: 221 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California

Disney Hall

Another DTLA icon, the curving, silver Disney Hall concert venue is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. While tickets to orchestra performances and other shows at Disney Hall can be pricey, you explore this world-class, Frank Gehry-designed structure for free .

Disney Hall offers complimentary, self-guided app-based tours of the concert halls (there are several). While on the 60-minute tour (narrated by John Lithgow), you'll learn about the hall's revolutionary acoustics and groundbreaking architecture.

The tour is presented on your mobile device, and you can go at your own pace. Podcatcher audio devices are loaned to guests who do not have a mobile device. Tours run daily, from 10am to 3pm, with the last tour at 2pm, and no reservations are required.

After your tour, head outside to the somewhat-secret Blue Ribbon Garden, a wonderful place to relax and escape the heat. The highlight is a magnificent rose-shaped fountain, also designed by Frank Gehry, made entirely from broken pieces of Delft blue-and-white porcelain. The art piece, entitled "A Rose for Lilly," is a tribute to the hall's benefactor, Walt's wife Lillian Disney.

The Getty Villa

The Getty Villa Museum is one of the world's great museums of Greek and Roman antiquities , housed in an authentic recreation of a first-century ancient Roman country house. It's a spectacular experience to walk through the villa, with its fountains, gardens, mosaic and marble floors, and wall art. It's modeled on the Villa dei Papiri, discovered almost intact in Herculaneum, buried after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

Within the villa, you will find an incredible collection of artwork and objects from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The museum's collection covers a nearly 4,000-year period, from the Bronze Age through the fall of the Roman Empire.

The Getty Villa is in Malibu , just off the Pacific Coast Highway. Admission is always free, but timed tickets must be reserved in advance. The museum does charge a parking fee, so consider taking public transportation or an Uber or Lyft.

Address: 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, California

Official site: getty.edu/visit/villa

The Getty Center

The companion museum to the Getty Villa, the J. Paul Getty Museum is just one part of the Getty Center, a large museum and art research campus located in the Santa Monica Mountains, just off the 405 freeway. This free museum has a vast collection that focuses on pre-20th century European paintings, works of art, and decorative arts, as well as 19th- to 21st-century photographs. The permanent collection is joined by changing exhibitions.

Aside from all the incredible art, the Getty Center has almost 100 acres of landscaped gardens you can explore. This includes the Central Garden, which is more like a horticultural outdoor art installation. The mountaintop location means you get dramatic, sweeping views of the Los Angeles basin all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Admission to the Getty Center is free, and you don't need to make reservations or reserve tickets online. There is a charge for parking, and advance parking reservations are recommended.

Address: 1200 Getty Center Drive, Los Angeles, California

Top Deck at Dodger Stadium

If you're a Dodgers fan or a baseball fan, one of the coolest free things to do in LA is to visit Dodger Stadium on a day when there is no game. You can admire the views, visit the Dodgers team store (open daily 10am to 5pm), and even sit in the Top Deck area inside the stadium, all for free.

Just tell the person at the stadium gate you're there to visit the Dodgers store, and they'll let you into the free stadium parking. The secret here is to pack a lunch and bring it with you.

When you arrive, check out the white letters that say DODGERS on the parking area fence, and more importantly, check out the incredible view of the downtown LA skyline. It's a great place to take photos.

You can visit the team store and walk around the Top of the Park area, which has giant numbers representing retired numbers of Dodger players like Jackie Robinson.

The gates into the stadium behind the store are open, and fans are welcome to go into the Top Deck area and sit in the seats, considered by some to have the best views in the ballpark.

Art museum

Los Angeles has an incredible array of museums, and they all have a free day each month. Those free days differ from museum to museum, but Discover LA, the city's official tourism website, has an excellent list of which museums are free, listed by day.

If you visit LA on a Sunday, head to Long Beach and visit MOLAA , the Museum of Latin American Art , the only museum in America dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art.

If you visit on the second Tuesday of any month, you can visit LACMA , the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or the Autry Museum of the American West for free. The Huntington Museum, Library, and Botanical Gardens in Pasadena is free on the first Thursday of every month, and the nearby Norton Simon Museum is free on the first Friday of every month.

In most cases, tickets for the free entry must be reserved in advance. There will also be a fee for parking if you park in the museum's official parking lot or garage.

The Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Center

The shuttle Endeavor is on permanent display at the California Science Center museum near USC. The Science Center offers free entry, and its permanent collection includes all kinds of interactive, engaging science-related displays. It's a great thing to do with kids, and they can learn all about space, the natural environment, and science while having a lot of fun.

At the air and space exhibits , you can visit with Endeavor and check out a retired space shuttle up close. You can't tour the interior of the shuttle yet (plans are in place to create a new interactive exhibit, which will include interior tours) but you can touch the tires.

Admission to the Science Center's permanent exhibition galleries (including the Space Shuttle) is free, but they do charge a $3 service fee to reserve your timed entry ticket online. You can avoid this fee by going to the museum box office and getting your same-day, timed entry tickets in person. The disadvantage to doing this is you may discover the museum is sold out or they do not have tickets for your desired entry time.

Abalone Cove beach on the Palos Verdes Peninsula

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, part of the Abalone Cove Ecological Reserve on the Palos Verdes Peninsula takes some work to get to, but you're rewarded with a secluded, somewhat hidden beach. There are two beaches, Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove, separated by cliffs.

Take the Cave Trail all the way to Sacred Cove, and then hike down to the beach. It's a steep but easy hike, and at the last part, it takes you down about 400 feet from the bluff top to the beach. Here, you will find a beautiful, usually deserted (except for holiday weekends) protected cove and black-sand beach.

Parking is free if you park near the trail access adjacent to the Terranea Resort . There is a fee to park in the official Abalone Cove Shoreline Park parking lot (first 30 minutes is free if you want to make a very quick visit).

The Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden is a 6.5-acre garden complex in the San Fernando Valley, right near where the 101 and 405 freeways intersect. The garden is free to visit and has three separate gardens, which are visited in succession.

First there is a dry Zen meditation garden , with traditional elements like stones, wisteria, and tortoises. Next there is what's called a Chisen-Kaiyushiki or wet garden, with lakes, streams, and waterfalls. Finally, you can enjoy a tea garden complete with a teahouse.

The unique thing about The Japanese Garden, and especially the water it uses, is that it's reclaimed water; the garden is part of a city water reclamation (sewage treatment) plant. Opened in 1984, it was designed to be an oasis from the fast pace of the city and an example of how reclaimed water can be used, even for a delicate environment like that of an ornamental Japanese garden.

The full walk through all three gardens is about two miles. The garden is free, but advance, timed reservations are required. You (and your group of up to five people) get the full garden to yourselves for an hour.

The garden is open from Monday through Thursday, from 10am to noon and then from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. They are closed for 24 hours after a rainstorm.

Address: 6100 Woodley Avenue, Van Nuys, California

Steam train at the Travel Town Museum in Los Angeles

LA's Travel Town Museum, located in Griffith Park, traces the history of trains and train travel in and around Los Angeles from the 1880s through the 1930s. It's a great free thing to do with kids , and they love the huge steam locomotives and train cars displayed on the tracks.

The museum has an extensive collection of over 40 locomotives, freight cars, cabooses, passenger cars, and interurban trolleys like LA's iconic Red Cars. Most of the trains are displayed on tracks, and you can climb aboard and explore them. None of the trains are operational, but there is a miniature-gauge steam railway that goes around the exterior of the museum complex ($4 per ride).

The Travel Town Transportation Museum is in Griffith Park, not far from the Los Angeles Zoo. It's open from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week; closed on official holidays.

Address: 5200 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, California

Aerial view of the Santa Monica Pier

For six weeks during the late summer and fall, the Santa Monica Pier presents their Twilight on the Pier free weekly music festival every Wednesday night. For the past 35 years, the event has been a community gathering point to discover new music and listen to iconic artists as well. Recent years have included a separate comedy stage, art experiences, and on-site makers, as well as interesting food.

The festival is very popular and can be crowded, so arrive early to claim a good spot. You can also sit on the beach next to the pier, where you can hear the music but won't be able to see the stage. The festival is known for curating a great combination of big-name artists along with new and up-and-coming performers.

The Santa Monica Pier (and the huge stretches of beach on either side) is a great, free beach destination, so you might want to spend your day here and then stick around for the music festival.

Chess players will want to check out the small chess park, on the beachfront right next to the pier.

Urban Light at LACMA

The public art installation in the forecourt of LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, has become a symbol of the city. It's a dense square of 202 restored cast iron antique Los Angeles city streetlights from the 1920s and 1930s, arranged in rows. This is something you can do 24 hours a day as the (solar-powered) lights are turned on at dusk and kept on all night long. The artist says at night it transforms into a "building with a roof of light."

The landmark public art piece was created in 2008 by artist Chris Burden, and although it seems like the streetlights are perfectly aligned, they are not. The alignment depends on your perspective and where you are standing. The lights have become a must-visit spot for Instagram and TikTok posts.

If it's not too dark out, walk next door to visit the iconic La Brea Tar Pits . It's free to walk around the big Lake Pit, which is right on Wilshire Blvd. There are life-size models of Stone Age animals like wooly mammoths seemingly trapped in the thick tar.

Address: Forecourt of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles

Hollywood Boulevard

Still one of the most fun things to do in LA is to walk up and down Hollywood Boulevard to visit the star of your favorite celebrity in the Hollywood Walk of Fame . More than 2,700 bronze stars are embedded into a larger terrazzo star in the sidewalk, representing some of the biggest names from the worlds of TV, music, radio, live theater, sports, and film.

The stars are on the sidewalks of Hollywood Blvd., between Gower Street and La Brea Avenue, and along Vine Street between Sunset Blvd. and Yucca Street.

To find your favorite stars , check with the Walk of Fame organization. You can also check about upcoming star ceremonies, which are open to the public.

After you've checked out all the stars in the street, head to what's now called the TCL Chinese Theatre and check out all the stars' handprints and footprints in the cement of the theater's iconic forecourt. Since 1927, every major star in Hollywood has added their handprint and footprint as part of a promotional ceremony. It's fun to put your hand in their handprints and your feet in their footprints – you'll be surprised how small some of Hollywood's most famous stars' feet and hands are!

Solstice Canyon Trail in Malibu

There are a lot of hikes and trails in LA but one of the best is Solstice Canyon in Malibu. It's not too difficult; not too crowded, if you arrive early; and offers a lot of beautiful scenery to enjoy along the way.

Part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the canyon runs up from the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway, so you can park at the trailhead and hike out and back. When you're coming back, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of the blue Pacific Ocean, as it's revealed at the canyon mouth.

In addition to the spectacular scenery, there are Native American archaeological sites , including a Chumash burial ground, along with the ruins of several 19th-century ranch houses and structures. There are also the ruins of the Roberts House, a once-famous mid-century modern home designed by famed architect Paul Williams.

The parking area for Solstice Canyon is right off Corral Canyon Road. The various trails are clearly marked, and there is a visitor's center. The full hike, out up into the canyon and back, can be done in less than an hour.

See a Show at the Hollywood Bowl

Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl has featured popular artists like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, and Garth Brooks in its iconic band shell since it first opened in 1922. Indulge in All Your Favorite Diner Foods at Mel's Drive-In

Tony Mariotti / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

A late-night Hollywood staple since 1997, Mel's Drive-In was originally the home of Ben Franks, a coffee shop often frequented by the likes of Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones back in the 1960s and 1970s after they'd finished performing at nearby rock shows. It's West Hollywood spot on the Sunset Strip between Beverly Hills and Hollywood and penchant for staying open 24/7 have made it a local favorite, as has its table-side jukeboxes and classic diner menu items like milkshakes, malts, sundaes, and homemade pies.

Enjoy a Comedy Show

The Laugh Factory

Celebrate All Things Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre

Dolby Theatre

Boasting a world-class sound system, the Dolby Theatre has seen many celebrities pass through its doors and witnessed unforgettable moments as the hosting venue of the Academy Awards since 2001. It's where Ellen Degeneres took one of the most famous selfies of all time in 2014 and where chaos unfolded after Faye Dunaway read out the wrong movie title while announcing the winner of the Best Picture category in 2017 (spoiler alert: "Moonlight" actually won the Oscar that year, not "La La Land"). Take a tour of the theater and enjoy your own red carpet experience, all while checking out a real Oscar statue and learning more about the theatre's history.

See a Show at the Troubador

Hollywood may best known for its movie and television stars, but there's quite a bit of music history, too. Music lovers should do their best to get tickets for a show at the Troubadour, Los Angeles' most famous and storied concert venue, which has seen some incredible moments, like the arrest of comedian Lenny Bruce in 1957 and the American debut of Elton John in 1970. Check the website for the roster of upcoming shows and keep an eye out for huge stars who often come back for their "Return to the Troubadour" shows.

Visit the Hollywood Heritage Museum

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

The small Hollywood Heritage Museum is housed in the former Lasky-DeMille Barn on Highland Avenue across from the Hollywood Bowl. The barn, built in 1895 on a citrus ranch on the corner of Selma and Vine, changed hands several times before becoming the base where, in 1914, Cecil B. DeMille and Jesse Lasky produced Hollywood's first feature film. The building was moved to the backlot at United Studios (now Paramount Studios) in 1926.

The barn was moved to its current location in 1983 and opened as the Hollywood Heritage Museum in 1985. Today, it houses an impressive archive of photos, props, and memorabilia from some of the earliest years of Hollywood filmmaking.

See Hollywood Relics at the Hollywood Museum

 TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

The Hollywood Museum (also known as the Hollywood History Museum) in the Max Factory Building is one of the best collections of movie memorabilia from the silent film era to the present day. You'll find an extensive Marilyn Monroe display, Cary Grant's Silver Cloud Rolls Royce, Rocky Balboa's boxing gloves, Elvis' bathrobe, and Hannibal Lecter's cell from Silence of the Lambs. Downstairs, you'll also be able to check out recreated Max Factor hair and make-up rooms.

See the Stars Along the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In addition to great people-watching, a stroll along the Walk of Fame is always enjoyable. See who you recognize among the singers, actors, radio personalities, and other celebrities honored with stars along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. You can also measure your hands and feet against the imprints of all your favorite stars, from Fred Astaire to Kevin Hart, in the Forecourt of the Stars in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's Chinese Theatre).

Take Photos of the Hollywood Sign

There are plenty of places with views of the Hollywood Sign , but one of the most accessible spots to see the sign and take a photo is from the viewing bridges at the Hollywood & Highland complex next to the TCL Chinese Theatre . The shopping and entertainment center is home to many well-known shops and restaurants—like California Pizza Kitchen, Jinya Ramen Bar, and the lounge at the Lucky Strike bowling alley—where you can enjoy views of the sign.

Tour the City on a Sightseeing Bus or Trolley

Richard Cummins / Getty Images

While you'll need a car to get around Los Angeles, you can also see the sights by hopping on a bus tour. L.A. offers a dizzying array of sightseeing tours by bus, trolley, or van, from the ubiquitous Hop-On, Hop-Off Tours to Movie Stars Homes Tours, Ghost and Crime Tours, and other specialty tours that depart from Hollywood. Whichever one you go with, it's a great way to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

Visit the World of Illusions

Museums of Illusions

The  World of Illusions is a fairly new addition to Los Angeles' museum scene and like many places in L.A., it offers an interactive experience where visitors can become part of the installations. Each of the four themed rooms offers a different 3D illusion, for instance, an upside-down house that makes it look like you're walking on the ceiling or another part that features giant objects, giving the appearance of tiny humans when you're posed near them. It's a great place to take young kids, snap some novelty photos for the 'gram, and enjoy some wholesome fun.

Learn About Insane World Records

The  Guinness World of Records Museum  along Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame isn't just a fun stop on the main tourist drag, it also happens to be housed in the oldest standing movie house in the area, originally built in 1913. The Hollywood Theatre got its iconic art-deco facade in 1938 and sported one of the first neon marquees in the country. Inside, the museum houses an impressive collection of photos, videos, and artifacts representative of the thousands of amazing—and sometimes disgusting—world records.

Meet Celebrities at a Wax Museum

The  Hollywood Wax Museum  is one of the originals, housing an ever-changing collection of wax movie stars and a permanent collection of past presidents and horror figures since 1965. Nearby,  Madame Tussauds Wax Museum opened in 2009, sporting a much larger selection of wax figures, many of which seem more lifelike than those at the Hollywood Wax Museum. Visit both for yourself and be the judge.

Take a Hike in Runyon Canyon

This 160-acre park in the Hollywood Hills is an excellent place for people-watching as well as taking a much-needed break from the city and appreciating a little nature. You'll see all types of people here, from the super athletes running the hill trails and moms and nannies with strollers on the flatter cross-canyon trails. Winter and spring are the best times to go hiking in L.A. since skies are clearer and there's more greenery. Summer and fall, meanwhile, can be hot and hazy, so you'll be very sweaty and won't have as nice of a view.

Browse Records at Amoeba Music

Amoeba Music , a legendary record shop located on Hollywood's famed Sunset Boulevard, offers a wide selection of used and new tunes on vinyl, cassette, and CDs, among other musical memorabilia. You could get lost in the store for hours exploring different music genres and it is generally a very cool place to be. It's also known for hosting live music events from time to time, so keep your eye on the calendar.

The celebrities live here for a good reason, so step into their world for the day, for free, at these 17 amazing places from all across town!

1. See  The Hollywood Sign , one of the oldest, most well known landmarks in the world. The 9 letters that spell Hollywood are high above LA in 45-foot tall white letters. It was created as an advertisement in 1923, that originally read “Hollywoodland,” and its purpose was to advertise a new housing development. This sign is known for it’s distinctive, wavy appearance, but when seen at a comparable altitude the letters appear straight-across. While visitors can’t actually touch these letters for themselves, there are plenty of hiking trails in the area, which allow you to get a good view of the sign. Before serious security precautions were put in place, the sign was actually known as a popular spot for pranksters, as people changed the letters to read things like “Hollyweed,”Holywood,” and “Ollywood.”

The view from behind the world famous Hollywood Sign.

2. Window shop on Rodeo Drive . Even if you don’t plan on spending thousands buying out the Louis Vuitton and Hermes stores, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come and see how the upper class–and just those local wannabes who go deep into debt here as they try to keep up with the Joneses–and go for the stroll of a lifetime. Actually, the stores and restaurants just a block or two off the main road actually are somewhat affordable. I mean after all, you’ve made it all this way so you might as well get a bite to eat at their legendary Sprinkles Cupcakes, which is just two blocks off Rodeo Drive. Sprinkles is where all the A-listers go! You can read more about it (and what makes it so unique) in my post on  12 Fun Facts About Beverly Hills , which is sure to get you pumped for your next vacation! While Sprinkles originated in LA, they now have stores popping up all over the country, so those who just can’t wait or perhaps are just now finding out about this incredible chain will want to check out their official website to see if there’s one near you!

Take a walk down Rodeo Drive.

3. Visit The  Hollywood Walk of Fame   – It features more than 2,000 five-pointed stars with the names of celebrities to fictional characters can all be found on the Walk of Fame. It all dates back to February 9, 1960, when Joanne Woodward became the first performer to receive a star on this very walk. Under the name on each star you will see a small, round emblem which illustrates the celebrity’s category, with one of five symbols. The celebrity with the most stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is singing-cowboy Gene Autry, who earned five different stars! While here, also take a look and get your picture in front of–arguably–the most iconic theater in America, The Grauman’s Theatre, one of the most famous theaters in the world. Look closely at it’s forecourt and you’ll see imprints from Whoopi Goldberg’s dreadlocks and even magic wands from the stars of Harry Potter.

The TLC Chinese Theater

4. Discover LA’s wilderness:  Los Angeles possesses a wealth of natural wilderness, which attracts avid hikers and bikers to such sites as Topanga State Park, Malibu Creek State Park and the Angeles National Forest.  Find the best hiking trails .

The panoramic view from Topanga State Park

5. Consider seeing a   live TV show taping , most of which are free. Here’s a post I wrote with  6 Reasons Why You Should See A Live TV Shop Taping In LA , it’s where I tell all about what it was like seeing Chelsea Lately (and even meeting Chuy!) and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Other popular tapings include  Last Comic Standing, Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Ellen, The Tonight Show,   American Idol, and more.

See The Tonight Show!

6. Griffith Observatory  offers a great view of the surrounding area and features the 300-seat  Samuel Oschin Planetarium,  where hourly screenings of a narrated 30-minute projection show called “Centered in the Universe” reveal the stars and planets that are hidden from the naked eye by the city’s ubiquitous lights and smog. Also, the observatory features 60 space-related exhibits, with the highlight being the largest astronomically accurate image ever produced, a 20*152-foot porcelain enamel dazzler that’s called “The Big Picture.” Onsite, you will find the Wolfgang Puck “Café at the End of the Universe,” and several Zeiss and solar telescopes for public use both day and night. On warm nights, with the lights twinkling below, this is one of the most romantic places in L.A.  Admission to the observatory building and grounds is free.

The Griffith Observatory

7. Take a stroll down  Venice Beach Boardwalk  to check out the street performers, the hard bodies at muscle beach and the interesting characters wandering the strand during the summer and on weekends.  Parking  in the area ranges from $3 to $15 depending on the lot and the time of year. Limited free street parking is available in the neighborhood if you have the patience to look for it.

Ladies… how about some people watching at Muscle Beach?

8. In 2009, the  Santa Monica Pier  celebrated its first hundred years. Walk to end of the pier, passing artists along the way; meander through  Pacific Park,  the pier’s amusement park featuring a solar-powered Ferris wheel; and step into the  Santa Monica Pier Aquarium , where children 12 and younger are free.

Santa Monica Beach

9. California Science Center  is the West Coast’s largest hands-on science center, with features including a 50-foot animatronic woman whose muscles, bones, organs, and blood vessels are revealed, demonstrating how the body reacts to a variety of external conditions and activities. The Air and Space Gallery is a seven-story area where real air and spacecraft are suspended overhead. You can pedal a bicycle across a high-wire suspended 43 feet above the ground or get strapped into the Space Docking Simulator for an extra fee.

California Science Center

10. The  La Brea Tar Pits  in Hancock Park next to the LA County Museum of Art is the greatest source of prehistoric fossils ever excavated. These fossils have made their way into museums around the world, but the largest collection is here at the  Page Museum . It’s free to wander the park and look at the tar pits and outdoor exhibits. During the summer, you can watch the excavators at work. Hancock Park is on Wilshire Blvd. Between Curson and Fairfax. Metered street parking or paid lots.

La Brea Tar Pits

11.  The Getty Center , a modern hilltop fortress in Brentwood, houses one of the finest art collections in the world. The building and view are worth a visit even if you’re not interested in the art. The Museum is free, but there is a hefty fee for parking. Bike and motorcycle parking is free. Groups of 15 or more motorcycles must reserve parking.  Metro Bus  761 stops at the main gate.

12. Explore the Mexican marketplace at the  Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument  at Olvera Street. Explore on your own or join a free walking tour Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon. A self-guided tour brochure describing the historic buildings is available at the Information Desk in the Plaza or at the El Pueblo Visitors Center. Entrance to  LA Plaza Museum  of Latino history at Olvera Street is also free. Parking Lot at Main Street and Cesar Chavez. Metro Red Line stop:  Union Station .

See the incredible  Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument!

13.  Disney Concert Hall and Music Center Tours – Performances at the Music Center and Disney Concert Hall may be on the pricey side, but you can tour the Music Center campus including Frank Gehry’s metallic masterpiece sailing down Grand Avenue. The inside of the Disney Concert Hall is great, but my favorite thing is climbing up on top among all that metal, and you can do that even if there’s no tour.

Disney Concert Hall

14. Hunt Down Some Culture! – In the 1970s, Hee Deok Lee’s grocery store on Olympic and Harvard Boulevards was one of the first shops in the community to make up  Koreatown,  also known endearingly as K-Town. Meander through the area’s shops, and if you work up an appetite, stop for Korean barbeque. About ten minutes from Koreatown in the Miracle Mile area, you’ll find the  Korean Cultural Center , where many of the programs and exhibitions are free to the public. Visit the center’s 2,700-square-foot gallery, which houses traditional and contemporary art, or attend a film screening. Screenings are free and feature contemporary and classic Korean films with English subtitles.

15. In 1999, a section of East Hollywood was designated America’s first  Thai Town .  Some refer to the area as Thailand’s 77th province. The Thai New Year falls in early spring, and in L.A., much of the celebrating is done at the Songkran Festival. Attend the festival for free. Taste Thai curry, sit in on the Miss Thai New Year Pageant Show, or watch a boxing competition or a traditional folk dancing session. In the early morning, a ceremony commences to gently bless respected elders with water.

16. Walk the grounds of the  Hollywood Forever Cemetery , where many of Hollywood’s early directors, writers, and performers are buried. The cemetery opened in 1899. Rudolph Valentino is buried here, as is Harvey Wilcox, the founder of Hollywood, and Victor Fleming, director of  The Wizard of Oz  and  Gone with the Wind.

The 22 best things to do in Hollywood

Find the best tours, attractions, restaurants, bars and things to do in Hollywood, both on and off the Walk of Fame

Michael Juliano

What’s the deal with Hollywood?

Let’s start with the bad news: Hollywood can be pretty disappointing. Yes, there are still some movie studios here, and yes, there’s some worthwhile history. But it’s probably not the Tinseltown paradise you’re expecting: Hollywood is basically just a district in L.A. with a lot less glitz and moviemaking magic than you’d hope for and a lot more decay and traffic.

But here’s the good news: Hollywood is having a bit of a moment right now. High-end  celebrity hangouts  and hotel bars feel right at home with tucked-away cocktail bars  and bespoke coffee shops —and there seem to be more and more by the day.

Where exactly is Hollywood?

Hollywood is centrally located within Los Angeles, served by the 101 freeway and multiple Metro  B Line stops. The sizable area greets the scenic Hollywood Hills to the north, as well as Universal Studios just on the other side of the hill; stylish  West Hollywood and the eclectic Fairfax District to the west; lively Koreatown and adorable Larchmont Village to the south; and a slew of neighborhoods to the east, including East Hollywood, Thai Town and Los Feliz .

Is Hollywood part of Los Angeles?

Yes, Hollywood is simply a neighborhood within the City of Los Angeles, and has been since 1910.

What will you find in Hollywood?

Well, you know, other than disappointment: the sort of big-name attractions you’ve seen in movies and on TV, including the Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theatre, Paramount Studios and the iconic Hollywood Sign. If you insist on seeing some of the most touristy landmarks, just keep it quick; your time is much better spent elsewhere in L.A.

But there are also a few less-touristy pockets, most notably an actually-worth-visiting row of restaurants and bars on Cahuenga Boulevard and its parallel streets, between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards.

If you only do one thing

See a show at the Hollywood Bowl —assuming it’s between roughly May and October. The rest of the year, a screening at one of the local movie palaces would top our list.

Things to do in Hollywood

Picnic at the Hollywood Bowl

1.  Picnic at the Hollywood Bowl

  • Things to do
  • Event spaces
  • price 2 of 4

This gorgeous outdoor amphitheatre has been hosting concerts since the LA Philharmonic first played here in 1922. Nestled in an aesthetically blessed fold in the Hollywood Hills, the 18,000-seat venue can bring out the romantic in the terminally cynical. It’s the summer home of the LA Phil (and boozy picnics); as long as there’s no performance, it also doubles as a public park .

See a movie at the Chinese Theatre

2.  See a movie at the Chinese Theatre

  • Movie theaters

It’s still a great place to catch a movie but most people come to the Chinese Theatre for the hand and/or foot imprints of around 200 Hollywood stars. The courtyard is usually choked with snap-happy tourists measuring their own extremities against the likes of John Wayne and Judy Garland, but you can avoid the crowds by catching a flick inside, where the auditorium is as stunning as the IMAX screen’s projection quality

Bowl a few frames at the Spare Room

3.  Bowl a few frames at the Spare Room

  • Cocktail bars
  • price 3 of 4

Tucked away on the second floor of the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, the Spare Room is like stepping into another era: one where classic cocktails, tiki-leaning concoctions and punch bowls pour freely, and people make merry all night long. The big draw here, beyond the expertly made drinks, is the gaming. This bar sports an antique, two-lane bowling alley, which looks great with those George Esquivel–designed bowling shoes and argyle socks.

Survey the ’hood from the Hollywood Bowl Overlook

4.  Survey the ’hood from the Hollywood Bowl Overlook

This overlook in the Santa Monica Mountains has fantastic views of the Downtown skyline all the way to the ocean and it’s right on top of the Hollywood Bowl. It’s a prime place to be on a clear day—as evidenced by the tiny parking lot overrun with tour buses—so get there early (it’s also technically not open in the evening). If you’re after more scenic views, you can keep following Mulholland Drive  to find about a half-dozen other overlooks that face the Valley side of the city.

Find the best possible view of the Hollywood Sign

5.  Find the best possible view of the Hollywood Sign

  • Sightseeing

Originally created in 1923, the then “Hollywoodland” sign was supposed to be up for only a year and a half, yet here it is a century later . Getting close to the Hollywood Sign, though, is an often contentious issue thanks to pressure from local homeowners. From farther away, the archway at Ovation Hollywood  (formerly Hollywood & Highland) has a pretty decent view of the sign. You can catch a dead-on glimpse of it on Beachwood Drive, or farther up the hill near Lake Hollywood Park  for our favorite all-around perspective. Looking to get even closer? Go horseback riding at Sunset Ranch or lace up for a trek along the closed-to-public-vehicles road on Mt. Lee Drive to where you will be standing directly above the Hollywood Sign and can experience a total 360-degree view of the cityscape.

Visit dearly departed screen legends at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

6.  Visit dearly departed screen legends at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Any cemetery that houses the remains of such celluloid luminaries as Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino and Mel Blanc was bound to become a tourist attraction. Aside from popular posthumous celebs, Hollywood Forever is also home to Cinespia’s summer outdoor movie screenings, an annual Day of the Dead festival and concerts, both outside on the lawn and inside the property’s Masonic lodge.

Sip a stiff martini at Musso & Frank Grill

7.  Sip a stiff martini at Musso & Frank Grill

  • Restaurants

Open since 1919, the Musso & Frank Grill is Hollywood’s oldest restaurant, a steak-and-cocktails joint formerly favored by Charlie Chaplin and Raymond Chandler. With its many obscure dishes and individually priced sides (and salad dressings!), the menu can be daunting. However, some dishes are fail-safes. At breakfast, grab an order of crêpe-thin flannel cakes; later in the day, the grilled meats are excellent. And every table gets a half-loaf of house-made sourdough bread, the perfect accompaniment to a dry martini.

Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s handsome Hollyhock House at Barnsdall Art Park

8.  Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s handsome Hollyhock House at Barnsdall Art Park

  • Cultural centers

Just outside the Hollywood border, this hilly park is the home of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House . Originally intended as a massive arts complex, the site still fulfills that role with exhibitions in a variety of different gallery spaces, including the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and public tours of the Hollyhock House. In the summer, the park hosts a variety of alfresco cinema nights, wine tastings and cultural events that bring out a nice mix of singles, couples and young families.

Thumb through stacks of records at Amoeba Music

9.  Thumb through stacks of records at Amoeba Music

  • Music venues
  • price 1 of 4

As streaming services have erased CDs from our collective memory, the L.A. branch of San Francisco’s Amoeba Music could easily be seen as a mausoleum to actually leaving the house to buy music. But this, one of the largest independent record stores in the country, is very much alive (albeit at a new location). The variety of stock (vinyl, CDs and DVDs, new and used) is awesome, the prices are fair and the staff know their onions.

Look down at—but maybe don’t touch—Hollywood Walk of Fame

10.  Look down at—but maybe don’t touch—Hollywood Walk of Fame

We’ve spent enough time in Hollywood to know that you probably don’t want to put your hands on those grimy bits of star-dotted sidewalk—better to look but not touch. If you can stomach the suspect superheroes, claustrophobia-inducing crowds and never-ending line of gift shops, tattoo parlors and lingerie stores, there’s actually a lot of old Hollywood history to discover along the Walk of Fame (just maybe not a ton of glamour). The immortalized names on those famous five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars run from the Walk’s western extreme at the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway to the W Hotel and Pantages Theater at Gower, and additionally on Vine from the Capitol Records Building down to Sunset, near where the original movie studios sprang up a century ago.

See and be seen during a hike at Runyon Canyon

11.  See and be seen during a hike at Runyon Canyon

  • Parks and gardens

This 160-acre park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains has one main loop, plus a bevy of dirt hiking trails. The sea of buff trainers and their sleek, sweaty clients can get to be too much during the busy morning and weekend workout traffic, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the city (and, if you’re lucky, a chance to gawk at power-walking celebs). The southern entrance is at the end of Fuller Avenue in Hollywood; if you want to cut out most of the hiking and just beeline it to the tob, use the northern entrance off the 7300 block of Mulholland Drive.

Take a tour of Paramount Studios

12.  Take a tour of Paramount Studios

  • Walks and tours

Believe it or not, Paramount is the last major studio to keep its headquarters located in Hollywood—and the only one there to open its doors to the public. Inside the famous wrought iron gate, you’ll be treated to a guided tram tour through soundstages and a sizable New York backlot.

Walk through the fridge at Good Times at Davey Wayne’s

13.  Walk through the fridge at Good Times at Davey Wayne’s

Good Times at Davey Wayne’s takes us back to the 1970s via garage. Walk past the knick-knacks to find the portal to this booze-fueled time machine: an old refrigerator. Step through its door and you’re instantly transported to a house party in the era of hard rock, sideburns and shag carpeting. Vintage beer cans and retro tchotchkes surround the tufted bar, where staff whip up craft cocktails with forgotten spirits and draught beer is served in cans and novelty mugs.

See a classic Disney flick at El Capitan

14.  See a classic Disney flick at El Capitan

Yearning to relive your childhood and indulge in a Disney flick? El Capitan’s your spot—the lavish 1926-built theater screens Disney’s most current feature along with classics in between releases. Tickets are indeed pricier than other nearby cinemas, but then again, where else do you get to dine at a classic fountain and see a 2,500-pipe organ be played before the show?

Go horseback riding at Sunset Ranch Hollywood

15.  Go horseback riding at Sunset Ranch Hollywood

  • Griffith Park

If you keep driving up Beachwood Drive in search of the Hollywood Sign, eventually you’ll hit a dead end at Sunset Ranch Hollywood’s cluster of horse stables. The ranch offers a variety of daily trail rides through Griffith Park, and you can book ahead on their website. Pricier and longer rides include meals or a trek to the top of the park or Mt. Lee, but even the basic one hour ride ($75) lets you snag a close-up look at the Hollywood Sign along with sweeping views of the hills and L.A. cityscape below.

Associate with the industry crowd along Sycamore Avenue

16.  Associate with the industry crowd along Sycamore Avenue

Multiple publications have tried to deem this L.A.’s coolest neighborhood recently, but a single block of entertainment office spaces and high-end restaurants doesn’t exactly constitute an entire neighborhood in our eyes. That said, there is an impressive assortment of dining options along this block of Sycamore Avenue, south of Romaine Street, including Tartine Sycamore , Mr. T , Gigi’s , Mother Tongue  and Sightglass Coffee , plus always-interesting art exhibitions at Jeffrey Deitch .

See some illusions at the Magic Castle

17.  See some illusions at the Magic Castle

Speak the secret phrase to the owl sculpture in the lobby of this private club (we’re serious here), and the rest—well, we don’t want to ruin the surprises in store for visitors at this magical institution. The mansion that houses the Magic Castle is over a century old, but since 1963 it’s been the home of the Academy of Magical Arts, an exclusive organization made up of roughly 2,500 American magicians. Sorry to be cryptic, but if you can bag yourself an invite, you’re guaranteed to have a night you’ll never forget. If you can’t find a member of the Academy to tag along with , stay at the adjacent Magic Castle Hotel for access.

Catch a concert at one of Hollywood’s many music venues

18.  Catch a concert at one of Hollywood’s many music venues

You’re bound to find something worth listening to just about any night of the week in Hollywood. The Fonda and the Hollywood Palladium  are the go-to picks for touring acts, while Avalon  and Academy L.A.  specialize in DJ-fueled dance parties. For a more sedate evening, expect singer-songwriters at the Hotel Café  or intimate outdoor shows at the Ford , just up the canyon from the Bowl.

Bring on the heat at Jitlada

19.  Bring on the heat at Jitlada

  • East Hollywood

With endless celebrity photos and numerous “best of” lists on the walls, this Thai Town restaurant is one of the city’s cult favorites. If perusing the lengthy menu leaves you feeling dazed and confused, the green mussel curry—succulent New Zealand mussels piled high and bathed in an aromatic Southern curry flavored with lemongrass, sweet pineapples and chiles—is a good place to start on the extensive list of fiery Northern and Southern Thai specialties.

See a Broadway musical at the Pantages Theatre

20.  See a Broadway musical at the Pantages Theatre

Just about every Broadway musical that comes to town sets up inside of this gorgeous Art Deco auditorium. Our tip: Opt for the first few rows of the mezzanine for the best seats in the house.

Look out on the neighborhood from Yamashiro

21.  Look out on the neighborhood from Yamashiro

Built as a private art museum in the 1920s, this Japanese palace-like restaurant is a spectacular structure with extraordinary views of Hollywood. As for the food… hey, those views are nice, right? If you want an actually great meal, we love the minimalist Japanese-inspired menu at the adjacent Kensho .

Watch cinema gems at the Egyptian Theatre

22.  Watch cinema gems at the Egyptian Theatre

  • Independent

Temporarily closed for renovations, with plans to reopen in 2023.

Built by the same man who erected the Chinese Theatre and El Capitan Theatre, the Egyptian was faithfully restored by American Cinematheque in 1998. Though the building itself is now owned by Netflix, the not-for-profit company continues to program a wide range of excellent themed mini-festivals and one-off Q&As with legendary figures, as well as classic films and contemporary indie cinema.

Free Things You Can Do When Visiting Los Angeles

L os Angeles: Say the name of this city to anyone, and they'll instantly conjure up images of sunshine, palm trees, and sandy beaches. With its fantastic year-round weather and fun attractions for all demographics, it's no surprise that people near and far flock to this hot spot. It can be a nice change of scenery, and the fact that you can wear shorts and flip-flops practically any day doesn't hurt either.

LA may be one of your dream destinations; however, a trip out there certainly isn't cheap. Not only do you have to pay for transportation to the city, but you'll also have to shell out money for accommodations and food (For how much you should spend on food in Los Angeles , expect $24 per meal on average, location-dependent). Add souvenirs and other leisurely things, and you'll soon have nothing left in your wallet.

Luckily, you don't have to go broke to experience LA. There are plenty of free things to do in this city, which will lessen your financial burdens. Here are some of the best activities to do without spending a cent, as recommended by a local.

Go To Venice Beach

If there's any beach you go to in LA, it should be Venice Beach. It's one of the most popular American tourist destinations  and is free to visit. Many movies and TV shows have captured its boardwalk on film, meaning you'll see familiar sights in person. Lucky ones will catch Harry Perry, a busker in his 70s who zooms around on roller skates while playing an electric guitar. He's been at it since the 1970s, so you're taking in an authentic part of the beach's history.

There's lots to do on the boardwalk that spans over 2 miles long. You'll catch numerous performances by talented buskers, watch fit people working out at Muscle Beach, and nimble athletes at the public skatepark. In addition, there are souvenir shops and food stands as far as the eye can see, where you can shop and fill your empty stomach. For a completely free experience, stick to strolling the boardwalk or beach. You can also take a dip, sunbathe, or play beach sports. Whatever you choose, it'll be perfect to soak in the LA sun and people-watch.

Check Out Santa Monica Pier

If you enjoy the beach, this is another fantastic place to go. Take a slow walk down the wooden Santa Monica Pier while chatting with your loved ones and absorbing the Pacific Ocean's effects on your senses. Feel the cool ocean breeze on your skin, hear the waves crashing, smell the salty water, and see how beautiful Mother Nature is in the middle of a major metropolitan area. All this can be enough to refresh your soul, especially if you bring a beach towel and lounge on the warm sand afterward.

This National Historic Landmark has been around since 1909, making it over a century old. You'll have a splendid time watching people having fun at Pacific Park, the pier's oceanfront amusement park. Or, if you've got a few bucks to spare, you can pay to have a try at a game or a few minutes on a thrilling ride. Otherwise, view the shows put on by the street performers who are always on the pier.

Stroll Hollywood Walk Of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is perhaps the most iconic attraction in LA. You'll know you're there when you step onto the landmark and gaze upon a sea of red stars on black terrazzo slabs. As of early December 2023, there are 2,767 stars stretching across 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and 3 blocks of Vine Street, and they honor big names in the entertainment industry. All you'll need are comfortable shoes and a bottle of water to see this landmark. You'll also need your smartphone or digital camera, especially if you want to snap photos with your favorite celebrities' stars. Like many other parts of LA, there are street performers who create special memories, so make your phone or camera handy to capture these moments.

Construction of this landmark started in February 1960, but the concept had already been in the works for years, thanks to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles City Council. It was finished in the spring of 1961, with 1,558 stars on the walk. To this day, stars are still being added, so the Hollywood Walk of Fame will change within your lifetime. While on this walk, you'll go past the TCL Chinese Theatre, where you can see the handprints and footprints of celebrities. You'll also come across Ovation Hollywood, a mall that offers a fantastic view of the Hollywood sign. While you're at it, get some shopping done as well.

Go To The Broad

Want to discover a more cultured side of LA? And do you like contemporary art? Then you'll love The Broad , a free museum (for its permanent collections). It's recommended as part of the best itinerary if you only have one day in Los Angeles , so don't miss out. You'll find The Broad on Grand Avenue in Downtown LA, which gives you an excellent opportunity to explore the surrounding area. In addition, you'll instantly know you're there when you see the building. It has a white veil-like appearance that's hard to miss.

The Broad is home to the immersive Yayoi Kusama exhibits. Do note that you'll need to reserve (free) tickets in advance for the Infinity Mirrored Room, so make sure to do that before your trip to secure your spot. The other exhibit, Longing for Eternity, doesn't require reservations. Both have flashing LED lights that look amazing when reflected on the mirror-lined walls, and the rooms' ambient lighting makes things absolutely magical. You should take plenty of pictures to have lasting memories of these exhibits.

As for the rest of the museum, there are around 2,000 pieces of contemporary art made by 200 artists. Most notably, you'll view works by Andy Warhol, whose pop art is recognized globally. If you know the artist Cindy Sherman, you'll be pleased to know that The Broad has the largest worldwide collection of her art.

Visit The Getty Center

LA may be an expensive city, but one thing it's not short on is free museums. Another on the list is the Getty Center , which is much more than a museum. For one, it's perched on a hill, isolated from the city below. To get up there, you'll have to take a slow-paced tram from the parking lot, giving you plenty of time to admire LA's beauty. Once you arrive at the top, you'll get out and be greeted by the elegant yet stately central rotunda.

The modern architecture of the Getty Center already leaves you in awe, but what's inside will astound you further. There are art pieces from the Middle Ages to contemporary times, allowing you to see how artists have changed styles and techniques as the years pass. Outside, you can get a breathtaking view of LA, which will make the perfect backdrop for some selfies. Plus, there's a large garden that gives you a slice of nature amidst the buildings. Be sure to check out all the cool sculptures in the Lower Terrace Garden, too.

Visit The California Science Center

Those traveling with little ones who want to pinch pennies will find respite at the California Science Center . It's yet another free museum (for the permanent galleries), and it's family-friendly as well. It's a state agency and is the largest hands-on science center on the West Coast, so it's a fantastic place for learning, no matter how old you are.

The free admission is only for the permanent exhibits, but one of the coolest is the Space Shuttle Endeavour. You read that right: It's the actual space shuttle, not a replica. The Endeavour was in service from 1992 until 2011 and now has a permanent home in the California Science Center after retirement. While visitors cannot enter or touch the space shuttle, they can still get very close to it. It goes off display on January 1, 2024, for a few years, as its permanent home will be in the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center. This extension of the museum is currently being built, and you won't see the space shuttle again until it opens.

Snap Pictures At The La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea Tar Pits are truly something special to see, and we think it's one of the most bizarre tourist attractions in California. Many Ice Age fossils have been uncovered at this site, and to this day, scientists are still excavating newly found fossils. In fact, this is the only actively excavated urban Ice Age fossil site in the world, so you won't get to experience this anywhere else.

Scientists have been working on the site since the early 1900s, and most of what they've pulled out lives in the on-site museum. Not only are there tiny and massive bones but also plant remains. If you want to view them, you'll have to pay admission to get into the museum. However, the tar pits are free to visit, as is Hancock Park, where all these things are located. At the Lake Pit, you'll see and smell the tar bubbling inside. In addition, there's a mammoth family placed there, with an adult sinking in the tar. Getting a photo or two here will make great souvenirs.

Go To The Griffith Observatory And Griffith Park

Getting an overhead view of the city is always a treat, so why not head up Mount Hollywood? Several hiking trails take you up there from the Greek Theatre and Fern Dell, but truthfully, it's quite an uphill trek, and it'll take around 20 minutes. To conserve energy and avoid breaking a sweat, you should drive up if possible.

Either way, when you reach the top of Mount Hollywood, you'll see the gorgeous Griffith Observatory . It's free to enter and has informative exhibits and a planetarium displaying shows throughout the day. Check out the daily programs, too, since there may be interesting demonstrations. Make sure you take a look around outside as well since Griffith Observatory is only one part of Griffith Park. There are over 4,200 acres to explore, meaning you could spend a whole day here if you desire to do so. Plus, there are picnic areas to take breaks, rest, and refuel if needed.

Pay Your Respects At Hollywood Forever Cemetery

We won't deny that going to a cemetery sounds like a strange choice for a day out in Los Angeles. However, it's something unique to do.  Hollywood Forever is a full-service cemetery and funeral home, but it's more than that. Other than a final resting place for people (including celebrities), it's also a cultural events center. You can count on the business to have concerts, films, and events all year round. More importantly, it's somewhere you can find a little peace in the hustle and bustle of LA.

On these grounds, you can pay your respects to the souls laid to rest. It's been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999. By walking around, you'll understand more about the city's history and appreciate the beauty, thought, and care put into each gravestone and mausoleum. It's completely free to tour the grounds on your own, but you can also pay for a 2.5-hour guided tour if you want to learn even more about this cemetery.

Find Peace At The Lake Shrine

The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine is another quiet place in LA where you can rest, relax, and reflect. This beautiful and serene area offers you a slower-paced look at the city, with a deep blue lake enveloped by greenery. The Lake Shrine has been around since 1950 and honors the five principal religions of the world. However, you don't need to be religious to appreciate it.

In addition to strolling through the grounds, you can check out the Meditation Gardens. It's open from Wednesday through Sunday, and you'll need to make an advanced reservation to get access. It's still completely free to visit, and there are two different arrival times to choose from. While inside, you can traverse the paths and find peaceful meditation areas and docks. There's also the Windmill Chapel if you want to meditate or pray. Plus, you can pick up gifts from the visitor center or gift shop.

If you're interested, the Lake Shrine Temple is open every Sunday for morning services. You don't need to make a reservation, but if you're bringing your kids, make sure they're always supervised and taken out if they become restless or upset. There's indoor overflow seating available with video as well as outdoor seating with audio, which you can utilize if you don't want to go into the temple itself.

Explore Runyon Canyon Park

It's important to stay fit, even if you're on vacation. Some accommodations have free gyms to use, which can help you save some money. However, the view at your hotel's gym probably isn't great, and it's bound to get boring soon. You're in Southern California, after all, so why not take advantage of its amazing trails and access to nature?

One particular place you should go to is Runyon Canyon Park, which has the best hikes to take in LA . The paths are available all days of the week, from sunrise until sunset, so you have no excuse for missing out. The park has no restrooms, so prepare before embarking on this adventure. Runyon Canyon Park has 160 acres for you to explore, and the view's not too shabby either. It's popular with locals too, including celebrities, so you never know when you'll rub elbows with a huge movie star. And when you get to the top, you'll be rewarded with a grand perspective of Los Angeles that you'll never forget.

Read Books At LA Central Library

LA Central Library is the city's main library and one of the largest public libraries you'll find in the nation. It's in downtown LA and has served residents for almost a century since its opening in 1926. Get yourself to the Civic Center neighborhood, and the library won't be hard to spot. It has a dazzling Art Deco facade, with steps on either side leading up to the library.

When you step inside, you'll be astonished further by the interior architecture. Make your way to the rotunda, which is marked by the Zodiac Chandelier and all the delicate motifs and the mural on the ceiling. The other wings feature more works of art, as well as public art projects. Outside, you'll see the Maguire Gardens, a space combining plants, hardscaping, and artwork. After soaking in LA Central Library's elegance, browse the many racks of books. Grab one or two that interest you, then settle down in a comfortable seat. You can stay as long as you like to read the pages that fascinate you.

Tour Greystone Mansion

Beverly Hills has a reputation for being opulent, and Greystone Mansion is no exception. This fancy building has gardens and has been standing since 1928. It was originally constructed for the son of an oil tycoon, so you can only imagine how much money went into this area. In 1965, the city of Beverly Hills purchased the property and made all 18.3 acres into a public park in 1971.

Today, the mansion and gardens are popular with visitors, and it's common to see people having their weddings and corporate events here. You may even spot photoshoots while here, especially in areas recognizable on TV shows and movies. Walking around the grounds is free, but note that you aren't allowed to bring pets except for ADA service animals. And unfortunately, picnics aren't allowed, even though the grounds seem ideal.

Inside the mansion, you can take self-guided tours of the first floor and the theatre on each month's first Saturday or Sunday. Otherwise, Greystone Mansion is only available for special events, and the park grounds may be closed for reserved events, too. So check ahead of time and plan accordingly.

Walk Around Olvera Street

Southern California already places you near the border, making it easy to experience Mexican culture. But what if you haven't brought your passport, or you don't want to make the journey across? Then you need to go to Olvera Street . It's a relatively small block, but it's known as "the birthplace of Los Angeles" and is packed full of stalls, shops, and historical museums. Not only will you be able to purchase unique gifts, but you'll also eat authentic Mexican food, listen to mariachi bands, and watch traditional events and celebrations. Olvera Street is also part of El Pueblo Historic Park, which stretches across 44 acres. Admire the 27 historic buildings and stop in the plaza to see performances.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone, you'll be happy to know that this street is near Grand Central Market. This historic landmark is over 106 years old, and you'll discover lots of delicious foods in the 30,000-square-foot arcade. It's free to go in, but you'll have to pay for the food, of course.
