Parker Hale Safari - Origins?

Huron

  • Add to quote

Hi, i'm very new to the board and I recently bought a Parker Hale Safari rifle from an estate sale here in Canada. I did not know much about the make or the rifle before I purchased it, I thought it looked great and liked the action. So far, it's a nice little shooter, very happy with the purchase. Hoping to use it as my bush/bear gun. I have surmised what I could from the many posts regarding these guns and the useful information by many of the British Gun Pub users which I am grateful for. However, I'm at a loss on anything more or specific on my particular gun. I'm trying to figure out the exact age of the gun, model other than Safari and what make the Mauser action is? (i.e. is it German, Belgian, Czech or Spanish etc.) Here is what I've been told about the gun (whether accurate or not, I do not know!): It was a custom rifle built in Birmingham, England with a Parker Hale barrel and a M98 Mauser action. It says "Safari" on the left side barrel with the typical BNP stamps from PH on the barrel. I do not know what the "Private View Mark" is. It must be under the barrel covered by the stock. - 30/06 - 22" barrel length - Large ring action, 8.75" long action length - Serial is Z-317XX My uneducated guess is that its late 60s or 70s? The gentleman who had it before me owned it at least +30 but most likely many more years. I attached some pictures below, if you need anything more, just ask. (Note: There's what appears to be three initials at the rear of the action on the top of the stock. It's in the wood stock and looks to me like "ECH" ???) Thanks in advance for any details!!

Quick follow up: would the gun above be considered a Model 1000 since I believe it is simply a Safari Standard? From what I can tell from other posts by Brithunter, they moved to model numbers later in the mid-70s. So does that mean the provenance of this gun might be safely said to be prior to that, say 1960s? Also, since the "Private View Mark" is unknown to me under the stock, would I be crazy for thinking that maybe what appears to be "ECH" on the top of the stock (see pic 5 of 7) might be someone's attempt at showing the proof date in an easier location? Grasping for straws here but thought I'd ask. The Bolt handle has "BNP" stamped on it (pic 2 of 7). This has me thinking that the action was made in Birmingham as well, thus not a continental European made action? Someone might need to set me straight on this rifle and it would be greatly appreciated!! thx.

The crossed sceptre proof stamps - probably concealed under the wood - have a cypher code in the spaces between the 'X'. If you can post us a picture of THAT, we can at least date it. tac

The PH safari rifles used receivers from several different countries...your one is almost certainly commercial Spanish,as it does not have the thumb slot for loading with stripper clips. The earlier ones were actual military receivers (probably FN,Czech etc),but made into sporters by Parker hale.I was fondling one yesterday,an old one with the military receiver in .243....very nice rifles for a working man on a budget, vastly better quality than most new 'cheap' bolt action sporters.

Hmmm, v. odd. I just posted a response but it has disappeared. Anyhow, here it is again - best read it quickly before THAT goes, too. Many of P-H Mauser-style actions were made in the former Yugoslavia by the state arsenal. They are very fine actions, too, much-used by a number of custom builders over the years. tac

I have the safari delux ...Mauser action ....many stories have surfaced....and back in the 1980's I wrote the factory...they them selves could not give any info. On the action it's self....records Esther lost misplaced or never converted to computer or inventoried? Facts spoken about .....cashes of military mausers from all countries in good condition stored in bunkers tunnels below ground during ww2 ....when Parker hale moved bought the properties they got all in the deal.... .(hear say I have. Never seen this in print.) Fact: my gun 308 Mauser action, left thumb cut out for loading ease, wing safety, elevated on a solid block Lyman type sight.....I believe my gun is FM Belgian 300 (one key cut for ejector in receiver ring) action.... some light proofs give me that impression! Like on Husquvarna near the same periods using FM,actions. the stock made / stamped Sile under barrel in wood channel Italian company, snobble...reddish color, straight grain of little figure...light weight! Cost then $ $ 73.50 in England USA $124.95.. Cal's 243,270,3006,308 win. 308 Norma mag. Fact: Buxtons guide pg 223 to 223 "foreign firearms " printed in 1963 out of print but you can find it on net for about $20 used. I'm afraid to say the standard grade doesn't have the rear sight on your gun by the pictures... Leading me to think yours is of later than 1963, commercial action more on the 400 series style ... may be Santa Barbra of Spain type action...? With no thumb cut, cheaper basic sights, sliding safety....replacing the wing. Gold trigger... My gun currently has XX fancy wood, mark X trigger guard bottom metal with button take down... all up graded by my decreased gun smith and friend Donny Valley Oceania WVa... bringing up weight from almost 6 lbs to about two extra lbs.. Get a magnifying glass go over it slowly under the action and report back! Dan

Sile stocks were sold by Sile Inc which was John Jovino Co. in NYC which now is Henry Arms Co.

Sile was Jovino's trademark. It seems bizarre to me that P-H would buy the stocks from the US importer rather than go directly to the Italian maker. It is more likely that the U.S. importer of P-H got barreled actions and put on Sile stocks, something like Herters did with BSA rifles around the same time.

From memory along while back....they were imported from Italy or the wood?..by Sile ...the research I read at that time lead me to believe they came to England for Parker hale ... Didn't know the added later info...thanks!

Baribal said: Huron, Your only chance to know the year of manufacture is to find this below, which is, on older guns, on the side of the barrel and the newer Under the wood line, still on the barrel. View attachment 773748 Dan, Just remove the action from the stock and look under it. A vast majority of those I had / have, took apart and looked at were Spanish. Click to expand...

First things first, thanks for the detailed info from each of you. I must also apologize for my ignorance for not realizing it is very simple to remove stock from barrel. The proof is in the album but hard to confirm with certainty. Is is R/2/5? F/2/B? or a combination? Its hard to get an accurate picture as the stamp looks like it was overlapped or something despite using a magnifier. Bribal - thank you, your were correct in that this action is Spanish and the Santa Barbara type as I found "Spain" grinded out on the tang as you said. DK Philips - I attached a closer rear sight picture. The stock is indeed Sile. The floor plate is aluminum and stamped with PH as well as the trigger. What does all this add up too? sincerely, thx for the help.

rearsight.jpg

Baribal,,,,the Spanish actions didn't have thumb cut outs on the left side of the receiver rail?? my gun has no Spanish proofs marks....faint marks that look like Belgium from my memory! I would take it out of stock but It's sighted in for two hundred yards .. I'm afraid to change hits on target...by not being able to return to to repeated harmonics...reassembling Range is closed ....now since 2001 flood 20 months apart...100 year floods!

Huron thats it Sile just as my old memory remembered it.... The grounded off area my have spelled SpaiN ...? I recall that the m1 carbines made by IMI had Spain grounded off too....in same manner... There isn't any grounded areas on my gun but heavenly polished and shinny black chrome blue... The guns used at first May came from those packed full 98 in the tunnels....talked about years ago here on the boards.. Then FN...out sourced actions...my gun! Then they settled on Spanish actions and shotguns.....in my humble opinion..... Theory until facts are presented.....dan

From the Hallwell & Co Proof Date site, it appears that the stamp would be R/2/B dating the gun to 1966 according to their schedule of Birmingham builds? http://www.hallowellco.com/proof_date_codes.htm DK Philips - I'm pretty sure the ground out text is "Spain" as you can clearly see the "N" and the "S" is partially visible upon closer inspection. Sometimes we just have to settle! ;-) The action is smooth but not near as smooth as my Winchester Model 70 which leads me to think that it is a Spanish Action. Oparomines, i'm sure that Yugo is fine!

D'accord. tac

Thanks, it was an education. I am finally putting all the pieces of information from the boards together. I cleaned the gun up after taking it apart. I have thoughts of putting a 4x fixed powered scope on it for my woodland hunting. Just testing which ammo it likes best.

Joel, I don't know if this was a different SILE or what, but a lot if not all the Parker Hale rifle stocks (from the sporters on No. 1 and beyond) have the SILE stamp and even those in the UK bear that SILE stamp, so I really doubt it was made in the US. I'll try finding infos on that SILE.

I don't really know but I'm sure PH got wood from Italy with Sile wood stocks...if it's the same company ? And thumb cuts can could be Mauser military or Fm commercial?

Dan, Any post '49 FN "commercial" action will bear the elongated trigger plate release and no thumb cut out.

pre 300 actions with thumb cut... i was under the impression from reading that 300 deluxe actions without thumb cut outs.. and 400 supreme actions with safeties off bolt were sold to other companies well into into the late 1950's ..early 1960's. Centaure Liege Belgium..made OR BOUGHT.. model 125 action with thumb cuts into 1960's....page 104 same book i quoted earlier .... Cogwswell..Longfort special MADE OR BOUGHT the thumb cut actions..... into the 1960's pg 116 Fanconia model 700 had the thumb cut out bought or made...into the 1960's...pg 143 Heym model 53....had thumb cut out bought or made into the 1960's..pg 175....also with block type sight on top...like my PH. Holland magnum actions had the thumb cut bought or made into the 1960's pg 184 all in early 1960's...with thumb cuts... so X military or NEW manufactured with thumb cuts.....were used by many WELL KNOWN manufactures here in USA AND IN EUROPE in the 1960'S. FN made model 80 MADE ADVERTISED well into 1960's in same book FN with side cut out for thumb...page 130 same book. when FN stopped using them? or making them? FACTS ARE that they did make used them into the 1960's "my learned friend ! and at the same time made and progressed to no thumb cuts with stronger side rails...modern safeties replacing wing shroud safeties.... the answer may never be found....the company didnt even know when i wrote the letter asking this very same queston in the 1980's...

Not arguing my friend...I think inventories were being used up to save money and to make money off stock paid and bought sitting around...and when they moved to the new place the tunnels in the facility stuffed with all kinds of military Mauser in reserve during after the war some one researched a few years back? It's about the money saved.....with the gun posted not being of the same design in the 1963 ads ....I would assume other resources other products change not keeping up with ads, pictures all to get there.... I have dehaas book and agree....many time companies FM included sold off more expensive. Actions in the white or finished to again clear inventory, making room and profits! Spanish actions didn't have the thumb cut out as I haven't seen one? Mine is eather military or Fm scrubbed marking are hard to ID! If I ever take it of the wood again after hunting use till take a close magnified look.....but it's already sighted in and stable in tuned with loads and distance grouped... Owned many Vorers. Too and they had both actions in different models I'm not arguing my friend your very knowledgable in manufacturing, business, and advertising the variables are abundant.... And may over lap changes and products shape shifted into 1/2 modles early and late changes and out sourcing demands and contracts spects.....that is all Im actually saying....the photo of the gun above doesn't fit my guns profile and configuration during that time period.....it's later different...

Dan, And I am not saying they did not use ex-military receivers at all, as they offered a wide range of rebuilt rifles on different actions, but it was not on their post late '60's highest grades of Mauser, but rather on their early ones or their "utility" models. As I said, determining the date of manufacture should enlight what it really is. BTW, FN was in a real mess and have been pretty much stripped of it's useful machinerie and parts by the Germans when the Allies got in, so there was not much left for then to sell as surplus.

The "safari deluxe" being made in 1963 was their highest grade "safari" being lowest grade At that time and both still had the thumb cut out, deluxe had excellent high polished blue and Sile snoabble stocks....no gold trigger, adjustable trigger on the deluxe. Again when they stopped making or using this configuration with thumb cut outs i have, made in the 1963's ad I don't know? I also went after a 308 Norma mag in same configuration, couldn't come to terms, the deal fell through.....! ....we will keep checking and working to get her on it.....I was hoping a Brit that worked For them would chime in with hands on info! Thanks friend Dan.

1963 Parker Hales Hello, just found this forum with some good information on Parker Hales. Between my son and I we have aquired eight of them in the past couple of years. We are always looking for more information on them. Two of them have a us a bit courious as they are 1963 (O X B) one with inspector 2 se # J357S and the other is inspector 3 se # J290S. As noted by the serial numbers they are very close in manufacturing time frame, but they have several minor diffrenices from serial number placement on the barrel to the typeface of the Parker Hale on the barrel. The trigger guards are slightly diffrent in shape as well as the trigger shape (earlier one is very round and later one is much more square). They both have the Stripper clip cut outs and have bolt safeties. Any information on the 'early' Parkers would be greatly helpful. Pictures to follow as I can get around to getting both guns at the same place at the same time. Thanks

A lot of Parker-Hale's commercial rifles used Zastava-built Mauser actions from Former Yugoslavia. From the many survivors still in use here in UK by professional shooters I'd opine that they are pretty bombproof. tac

Looking to buy my first rifle end of August when the FAC is sorted. I have settled on either a Parker Hale Sporter or Safari, mainly for financial reasons but also as I like old rifles. Anyone know the key differences between the Sporter and Safari models? I'm struggling to find much info. on the web. Similar style BSA remains a wildcard option, but that's another thread. Thanks.

enfieldspares

Parker Hale rifles were warranted to shoot under 3" at 100 Yards using Norma factory ammunition. And whilst some shoot a lot better do not, unless you want to be disappointed, expect much better than 1" to 2" groups at that distance with ANY SORT of ammunition...factory or handloads. Joe Beatham at Gunshop East Barnet has always a good selection of such rifles AND 'SCOPE MOUNTING BLOCKS FOR THEM.

Hi Brithunter (Kevin) on the SD will be able to answer your questions - he has many a PH/BSA rifle etc. I have an M81 Classic (from new) and mine shoots <1" groups at the 100yds. When the Nobel Rifle No.1 powder runs out that may change............ L

I had a Parker Hale 1200 Safari. It had a heavy barrel, this might be the difference between the 2. I got mine about 28 years a go 2nd for £135 including the rcbs dies. I sold the rifle 10 years later for the same as I bought it for. It was in mint condition. It was a .243 and would group sub half inch with 70 grain ballistic tips, 39 grains of N140

Yep, def. after a heavy barrel as it will get lots of target use. Trying to avoid a Gibbs/Midland any info on identifiers would be great.

A Midland is made on a Springfield '03 bolt so it will have a third lug on the right side that visibly beds against the rear receiver ring. Those P-H rifles made on a Mauser 98 bolt will have a third lug but it will be on the underside of the bolt hidden in the raceway below the rear receiver ring. However when properly done there's nothing wrong with a Springfield '03 as this video shows...or with a Gibbs. http://www.gibbsrifle.com/1903-a4_sniper_rifle_.html

I have the 1967 (or maybe 1968) PH catalogue. If you want to take a look, PM your email and I will scan and sent the relevant pages.

I've owned both, and still own a safari in 30-06. To be honest I've been lucky with P-H's, all the ones I've owned have shot very well. I had one in 308 Norma Mag that would put 3 rounds into a half inch all day...... if I didn't blow the shot that is. They're still popular and sought after over here and have a very good reputation. AB

So, basically only get a Mauser 98 actioned rifle (if I want to avoid the American versions). Enfield - I'm sure you're right that the yank ones are ok, it's just that I want an all-British rifle.

Have a chat/PM with Adamant on here - he's an avid PH Mauser action fella - and nice to boot. He's probably even got a couple kicking around 'spare'!

Parker-Hale “Safari De-Lux” Sporting Rifle in .308…………(F 856) REDUCED

Created on February 15th 2018

Classic Safari De-Lux by Parker-Hale

A pure built Parker-Hale, Mauser design, bolt action Sporting rifle in .308 Winchester.  Serial number “C1743 S” on LHS of receiver.  The model designation on the outer left-hand action wall, “Safari De-Lux”.  BNP proofs.  Bolt body and handle finished in the white .  Mauser safety to rear of bolt and bolt release on LHS rear of action.  Dished, concave form bolt handle to allow for scope.  Parker-Hale dovetail scope mounts fitted to front and rear of action; max width 20mm. 4-grove RH twist rifling.

Pistol grip Monte Carlo type walnut stock with checkering to grip and Shnarble for-end. The stock could benefit from a professional refinish to transform this rifle.  As there are no faults with the timber itself and any dents or dings are almost negligible, this would be a worthwhile exercise.  The rifle is 42.1/2″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is a nominal 21.1/2″ in length and the trigger pull is 13.3/4″.  Excellent Parker-Hale finish all over, the w hite components could benefit from a polish.  The floor plate will open to dump rounds if necessary.  Single stage trigger – non-adjustable.  Rear sight is a flip-up type, adjustable for zeroing.  Fixed blade front sight on cross-hatched ramp to reduce glare.  The barrel is roll marked; ” PARKER-HALE LTD BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND”.  Front and rear sling swivels with adjustable leather sling.

Stock No’ f 856

Reduced to …£ 225.

Parker Hale Safari Deluxe, 30-06, S/N A148

parker hale safari deluxe

Description

Product enquiry.

The post war Parker Hale centrefire rifles were based on the Mauser 98 action as can be seen. This quality British built rifle is in better than average condition with storage & use marks on the Monte Carlo stock as can be seen in the photos which could be easily restored. The high gloss bluing is still good, the action works well & the bore is good.

This would make an excellent deer rifle.

The scope is a period correct steel tube Lyman ‘All American’ x 4 power with pretty clear post & rail reticle.

The sling is quality leather & in good order.

As usual, view all of the photos carefully as these form the main description & override all others.

Parker/hale deluxe safari in 30-06

DEACONLLB

  • Add to quote

Ran across one at our local Pawn shop today 30-06 seems well made shows some use not bad I would say good condition older one wonted 379.00 but I think he would go less never ask has weaver two piece bases on it walnut high gloss stock cheek piece with black end on forend and pistol grip 98 mouser action so what is it worth and how well do they shoot, I think for what I have looked at in the last week it is much better than what I see in new. deaconllb

Parker-Hale made excellent barrels in house the Mauser 98 Actions were bought in. Stocks were from Sile of Italy. Capable of excellent grouping it will depend on if soemone has messed up the bedding and abused the barrel how well it shoots now. Sorry cannot help with prices as I am not in America and further to that been out of shooting for several years now. The Parker-Hale rifles except for a couple of models have fore tip pressure point bedding. Sadly many mess this up free floating them then find they don't shoot as well so get rid of.............................. that's what I meant by messed up. May I wish you well with your decision. I happen to like the Parker-Hales.

That sounds like just what you've been talking about. To me the price sounds about right if it's in nice condition. Only drawback might be a little heavier than a new Tupperware stocked gun. But you got real steel & walnut in the Parker hale. I'd offer them $275 and see what happens. But I'd take $400 with me.

Too bad, but there will be others. ;D

. I sold my .30-06 P-H Safari, that was a G.I. bring-back from England in the late 1950's (by a friend's uncle), about 2-3 years ago. (I had it since 1965) It was a well-made, excellent quality rifle, based on a Mauser 98, with integral receiver scope-mounting dovetail for P-H Roll-Off Rings. IMO, for $300 with a rusty bore, I would have bought it in a New York Minute & sent it to Jes ( www.35caliber.com ) for a rebore to .35 Whelan - it would have ended up a $550 winner. .

lloyd smale

I think about it at 400 and snap it up at 300. Chances are with a half a day of work and some jb bore paste and a good cleaner like sweets that bore will be just fine.

I used to hunt with a guy that had one. His was a good shooter.

41 magnum

The action and wood alone is worth it!

I had one I shot a good bit, the action was 1200 super mauser. I've always though that was an aftermarket 98 action. Mine was a 308 abd hd a barrel on it that was not stress relieved. the warm the barrel got, the worse it shot. But I liked it any way. never got a chance to hunt with it, it was stolen out of my hold baggage coming back from overseas. Roll over cheek piece, only one I ever had. I did buy another about 1995 for the action and stock. Had it rebarreled to 6.5x55 for my wife. It was a much better shooter.

Bigeasy

Handled a few Parker Hale Mausers, seemed nice enough. Most of the later ones (1960's and up) used Spanish Santa Barbara mauser like actions that were investment cast. Personally, if I were looking for a nice Mauser type rifle, I would look for something with an FN, or non war time german production action. The Interarms Mark X / Mitchell mausers (Yugoslavian) are pretty good as well. Husqvarna mausers are very well made as well. Early Sears and Montgomery Wards rifles used the Belgian FN action, and can be found for a good price, as the Sears / MW name throws people off. Larry

This is interesting. I have looked at 4 or 5 Parker Hale mausers at gunshows over the past 10 years, and almost all of them looked really nice on the outside, but had a rusted bore. Perhaps the steel used was a little on the soft side? Hard to believe that folks bought these beautiful rifles, and then just let them rust. I simply have not seen this with the used Mark X, FN commercial made, or similar well made commercial 98 mausers. Mannyrock

Mannyrock - What were the calibers of the rifles you mentioned? If military in origin, I wonder if they were used with corrosive surplus, and not properly cleaned? Larry

.30-06., and maybe one .270. Could be that people (in England?) shoot corrosive, and then the used rifles get shipped over here? Mannyrock

The stock was a little too fancy for my taste on the one I looked at 30 years ago. Plus it had a bigger than needed gap to free float the barrel. I paid a little extra for the only other 30-06 in the rack that day, a 700 BDL.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

parker hale safari deluxe

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

  4. Parker Hale Safari

It was a custom rifle built in Birmingham, England with a Parker Hale barrel and a M98 Mauser action. It says "Safari" on the left side barrel with the typical BNP stamps from PH on the barrel. I do not know what the "Private View Mark" is. It must be under the barrel covered by the stock. - 30/06.

  5. What's your opinion on Parker-Hale rifles quality/accuracy

Joined: Jun 2004. Posts: 7,088. The Parker-Hale you describe is most likely built on a Santa Barbera action. Most were. Some were built on a BRNO ZG47 action but these are very rare and I've never seen one in 300 Win. Only 308 Norma. I've never seen a Foremost 6500.
