It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

The Killers live in London: a simply dazzling return to form, as new material earns its place

Emirates Stadium, June 4: two lockdown albums have revitalised the band’s fortunes, and with their UK tour, they finally reap the rewards

The Killers at The Emirates

Is there a band as content or as enthralled by the day job as The Killers ? Every moment of their show at London’s Emirates Stadium (June 4) – their second of the weekend – shows a group in sheer delight, who still can’t believe the chips fell their way. At one point frontman Brandon Flowers quotes Mohammad Ali, who “said that ‘a service to others is the rent you pay for a room in heaven’. We want to get to heaven…  Will you allow us to serve you tonight?” At the show’s finale, drummer Ronnie Vanucci Jr simply says: “Thank you for letting us have this job”. N’aww.

That is the perfect balance the band still strike: humble and grateful; bombastic and flashy. There’s likely a level of surprise that they remain as big a draw as they do. The two London shows arrive in the middle of a UK-wide stadium tour, taking in stops in Bristol, Falkirk, Norwich and Manchester at local sports stadiums – 120,000 tickets in London alone, nearly 20 years on from their debut album, 2004’s ‘Hot Fuss’. They, like Arcade Fire and other US bands of that era, found their audience here in the UK and have never forgotten the debts they wish to pay.

Though the Killers’ fortunes have never truly wavered, they seem to be in a sweet spot now. Their last performance in the UK prior to these shows was a Glastonbury headline slot in 2019 , and they’ve released two albums since: 2020’s canyon rock classic ‘Imploding The Mirage’ and last year’s knottier ‘Pressure Machine’ . The sheer number of hits on the former that are aired tonight – ‘My Own Soul’s Warning’, ‘Caution’ and more – have allowed them to toy with the setlist every night. ‘When You Were Young’ now slots in nicely as the show’s third song and several tunes (‘The Way It Was’, ‘My God’) were aired for the first time on this UK run – a rare big stadium tour where heading to multiple dates will be rewarded.

Some things remain, though: Flowers has Jagger-level bundles of energy and a similar magnetism. His golden suit shimmers with every hip-thrust and he bounces up and down a platform in Cuban heels as he nails ‘Spaceman’, and the underrated 2013 single ‘Shot At The Night’. Rarely does the broad grin slip from the face, and even on the moments where the songs need extra investment to carry the crowd – the slow-burning ‘Cody’ from ‘Pressure Machine’, ‘Miss Atomic Bomb’ – he does so with grace and hunger.

There are the usual stadium show tricks, too: endless fireworks and pyrotechnics, streamers in the colour of Arsenal FC (whose ground the show takes place in) and a giant video screen, best utilised for the ‘The Man’’s renaissance-baiting visuals, and the glow of Las Vegas’ strip on a ‘Dying Breed’. The finest moment is the tried-and-tested audience participation: Flowers picks between two signs asking if they can drum on ‘For Reasons Unknown’, and the winner nails each fill and beat. It’s clichéd, perhaps, but never not thrilling to see someone smash it with the best of them.

Most pleasing was the cuts played from ‘Imploding The Mirage’, a lockdown album that would never truly be alive until played in stadiums as big as these. ‘My Own Soul’s Warning’ has earned its place as their new show opener, and even ‘My God’ – all ‘80s synths and drum fills, but sans Weyes Blood – has earned its place on the setlist. Where it became immediately obvious following the tours for fourth and fifth album ‘Battle Born’ and ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ that some new songs were temporary inclusions that instigated bar-queue dashes, you sense that these are undroppable and unmissable.

And it’s not the only pleasant change: the song’s two-song finale has been given a spruce-up. ‘Human’ has gone full Kraftwerk with a robotic beat, and dazzling visual that poses the choruses’ existential question (“ Are we Human, or are we dancer?” ) while ‘Mr. Brightside’ starts with the Jacques Lu Cont remix for the first verse and chorus, before they replay it more traditionally when the crowd reach fever pitch.

It’s hard to say that any one act has been hard-done by during the pandemic’s touring pause, but few, aside from Taylor Swift , used the pause so well to their advantage. The Killers return wiser, smarter and with a pair of albums that show the full breadth of their capabilities. The returning tour will go down as one of their finest and most rewarding ever.

The killers will be heading back to the road to celebrate both pressure machine and imploding the mirage , along with their much-loved catalog of global hits, in 2022. .

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 23rd, at 10 am local time via the band’s website or on Ticketmaster.com .

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine , on Island Records on August 13, 2021 .  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett , and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage , released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage , “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers . “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”  Indeed, for the first time since 2004, the relentless momentum and pressures of being in a globally-renowned, stadium-shaking band stopped.  Enter Pressure Machine : a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.  Click HERE to watch it.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “ had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s .”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “ We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr . “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”  Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up - and living - in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.  For the first time in his life, Flowers had complete lyrics before a note of music was put to tape.  No stranger to inhabiting different characters in songs, on Pressure Machine he steps into the shoes of some of the people whose lives he watched unfold as a teen.  The album weaves the threads of Flowers’ signature lyricism throughout his career into a perfect whole culminating in the most elegant album The Killers have ever made.

Through its characters and also its title, the album squares up to the unbending pressure of the American dream compounded by religious disenchantment.  A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers's songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.  Pressure Machine’s stories detail the real life personal battles, overwhelming regrets, local tragedies, and the opioid epidemic that hit Flowers’ hometown, as well as every hometown in America.  Flowers sings about the choices people make, for better and for worse, and the consequences of those choices; the ones who were left behind, and the ones that can’t be forgotten.

Pressure Machine’s album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church.  Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

Dave Keuning is back with The Killers and has a new solo album: ‘It’s the best of both worlds’

Dave Keuning, the co-founder of the rock band The Killers

A San Diego resident, the veteran musician performed his first-ever solo gig here at The Casbah in 2019

Dave Keuning is not the only rock star who spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown working on a new solo album. But he may be the only rock star who can credit the pandemic for reuniting him with their band — in his case, The Killers , whose worldwide album sales between 2001 and last year exceed 28 million.

Keuning stepped away from The Killers in 2017 because of touring burnout, creative differences, a desire to spend more time with his family in San Diego, and what he calls “a hundred small reasons.” The sobering irony that a historic global disease led to his reunion with The Killers is not lost on him.

“I think the pandemic kind of bought me some time,” Keuning said, speaking recently from his home in San Diego’s North County.

“The Killers had to postpone a tour, which kind of brought us back together in a way. Because they probably would have toured without me, and I would have waited for that tour to be over before we talked about doing something. So, they decided to make another record — instead of touring — and asked me to be part of it, and I said: ‘Sure.’

“The pandemic was terrible in so many ways, for so many people, but I can’t complain. Because it forced everyone to slow down. My new record got written mostly during the pandemic, and I got back together (with The Killers).”

Keuning’s accomplished new album, “A Mild Case of Everything,” will be released Friday. The follow-up to his 2019 solo debut, “Prismism,” it was recorded almost entirely in the basement studio of his Encinitas-area home.

In a far-ranging interview, Keuning discussed an array of topics. They included: his latest album; his recent return to The Killers after a three-year hiatus; the pros and cons of stardom; why he needed surgery for a deviated septum 15 years ago; and what — or, more specifically, who — inspired his scathing song “No One is Calling You a Liar,” a standout number from his new album.

“There are certainly a lot of liars to go around!” said Keuning, who (at least in song) is usually apolitical.

“But Donald Trump has to be in the Hall of Fame of liars. I have some friends and family members who are Republicans, and I want to get along with them. I just can’t understand why they believe anything he says. ... But I’d like to move on past that. He’s gone, and I just wish everybody got along. ... I don’t want to make any enemies with anybody who wants to believe him.”

Dave Keuning

An aural labor of love

Released on Keuning’s own record label, Pretty Faithful, “A Mild Case of Everything” is — apart from a few drum parts — a one-man affair. It documents his growth as a singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist and drummer.

“Most of the time, recording is a separate thing than playing live,” Keuning noted. “The goal is to make the record as good as you can, even if it means adding extra things. This time, with ‘A Mild Case of Everything,’ I thought: ‘How am I going to play this live?’

“I wanted to have more things that were fun to sing live, with better choruses. Because, for so long, I had focused on song structures, guitar parts and how I can contribute those things to The Killers. ... This time, I wanted the songs to be fun to play live.

“And I wanted to have a San Diego gig confirmed in time to mention in this interview, but I don’t yet. I have to get my (solo) band in to practice — and there are a lot of Killers gigs being planned out. But I’d like to do a San Diego solo gig as well, hopefully, by the end of the year.”

A quintessential labor of love, “A Mild Case of Everything” was carefully constructed by Keuning, whose only deadlines were self-imposed. The album’s 16 songs — 17 on the vinyl version — are attentively sequenced in an order that creates a musical and emotional arc best appreciated by hearing them all in one sitting.

Alas, that may be a quaintly outdated approach. The digital music age enables — and encourages — listeners to select individual songs, rather than hear and absorb an album in its entirety.

Consequently, a generation that grew up with music streaming from a cloud may not discover that Keuning’s ambitious nearly nine-minute song, the intricately constructed “Don’t Poke the Bear,” is immediately followed by his new album’s shortest number, the 75-second-long “We All Go Home.” And they may miss hearing the lilting, Beatles-esque flavor on such deep album cuts as “Peace and Love,” or the Celtic-tinged guitar lines on “What Do Ya Want From Me” and the album-concluding “Shake Well.”

“People like me are on the endangered species list,” Keuning acknowledged.

“I still appreciate making and listening to a whole album, but I don’t know how many people there are like me. ... I spent a lot of time on the order of the songs on my new album, and I had several different song orders. So, for the listener who does listen to the whole album, I think it will flow really nice. But I was expecting people who will pick and choose, which is why I chose to have 16 or 17 songs, instead of 10 or 12.”

That Keuning, 45, wants his second solo album to be enjoyed in its totality is not surprising.

But the fact that he has released two solo albums in the past two years is almost shocking, at least based on what he told the Union-Tribune in a 2015 interview. It was conducted to preview The Killers’ performance at the debut edition of the KAABOO Del Mar festival, which was held just a few miles south of his North County home.

The Killers arrive at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards

A reluctant solo artist?

“Every time I start working on (new) material, I come to the conclusion I’d rather have it used in The Killers than a solo project (that) probably no one will ever hear,” Keuning said in his 2015 interview .

“I understand that, sometimes, it’s healthy to do a solo project, even if only 100 people hear it, because you get it out of your system. I do have a backlog of hundreds of songs. But I don’t feel any urgency to put out a solo album.

“Certainly, I’m more excited in making Killers’ music, which we are getting ready to do, by the way. If only one of my ideas gets used on a Killers’ album, that will be heard by many times more people than a solo album.”

What changed?

“I completely forgot about that interview, but it is still pretty accurate and that sounds like me,” Keuning said. “What happened after that is that I took a break from touring and had the time to do a solo album. And I liked it.

“I like having the ability to finish songs and do whatever I want, not out of ego, not out of I finally get to call all the shots, but more like a kid in a candy shop who gets to do whatever he wants. I can play keyboards, do a (guitar) tapping solo and can pick whatever I want to do. If I want a nine-minute song or a 16-song album, whatever I want, it’s fine and lets me get a lot of these ideas out. It’s not just ideas I recorded on my phone that will never be heard.”

Some of the best songs on his new solo album, most notably “Bad Instincts” and “Worlds on Fire,” sound like potential Killers hits. Does he agree?

“I certainly wonder about that,” said Keuning, the co-writer of such Killers staples as “Mr. Brightside,” “Human” and “When You Were Young.”

“I think, maybe, they could have been hits for The Killers. It’s hard for me to know.”

Did he offer any of the songs on his new album to The Killers for the band’s consideration?

“I did show ‘Worlds on Fire’ to The Killers,” Keuning said. “I showed most of these songs to them, in one form or another. It’s hard to know if I should have shown them to the band one more time than I did.

“But I don’t like to be in a position of having to convince people to like my stuff. If they don’t like it, I don’t want to fight over it. If they don’t like it, or can’t connect with it, or don’t think it fits on the album — even if they do like it — I kind of move on from there. I guess that, with some of these songs, I’ll never know.

“But it’s not too late for me to rework some of these songs and put them on a Killers record. Maybe some listeners will pick up on it, or not, but they are still my chord changes.”

The release of the band’s fully completed seventh studio album was pushed back by the COVID-19 shutdown. Recording sessions have been underway in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for an eighth Killers album by Keuning, singer-songwriter Brandon Flowers, bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr., all of whom are fully vaccinated. On Wednesday, the band released a new song, “Dustland,” that features vocals by Flowers and Bruce Springsteen, a key inspiration for The Killers.

Down San Diego way

Keuning chuckled when asked to cite the non-musical advantages of living in San Diego.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that,” he said. “The weather is better, and it is easier to go for a walk. Funnily enough, the biggest difference is probably the air. I still love Vegas and I consider spending more time there someday or living there fulltime.

“But I grew up in Idaho. And when we started The Killers in Las Vegas, I didn’t realize how much it was going to affect my nose. Because of the dryness and dust, I had to have surgery for a deviated septum 15 years ago. And every time I’m in Vegas, I start sneezing after two or three minutes. If you live there, you get used to it.”

Keuning’s extended hiatus from The Killers has allowed him to be a full-time dad in San Diego to his son, Kyler, now 15.

“Being a father was a big part of it,” Keuning said of his decision to step away from the band in 2017. “But everyone is looking for one giant reason I left the band — and it’s kind of like a hundred small reasons that had led me to decide I couldn’t do it, including my own fatigue of being on the road.

“I don’t think people understand it, but you’re just constantly going from one town to the next, and it was hard. I like being in my own bed. It’s hard to have any relationships (on tour). I don’t do drugs, but I certainly understand why a lot of these past musicians have.

“Because you go crazy and don’t know what to do with your time and all the emotions you’re going through. And you certainly have enough stuff around you to enable (drug-taking). So, I wanted to live normally for a little bit.”

Keuning performed on The Killers’ disappointing 2017 album, “Wonderful Wonderful,” but was not included in its publicity photos. When the band toured in 2018 and 2019, two hired hands filled in for him. He did not contribute at all to The Killers’ 2020 album, “Exploding the Mirage,” and the group’s other members have acknowledged they struggled without him.

His absence confused some fans. They wondered why Keuning would step away from a band that far exceeded his dreams of musical success, fame and fortune.

“Well, yeah,” he said. “This is what I always dreamed about, and we achieved all those dreams. I did four world tours with The Killers, each one about two years long ... and that wore me down.

“It took almost as long, or at least a year, to make an album with The Killers. ... I just wished there were ways to get things a little more balanced, with more moderation, and that’s probably the biggest challenge: the schedule.

“There’s no getting around that schedule: how much recording to do; how much promotional time; how much touring; all those things. Because that’s what you’re required to do, regardless of whether you are the lead singer, the lead songwriter, or whatever it is you do in the band.”

He paused to weigh his words.

“A lot of people don’t understand it and think I have no right to complain, so I get it,” Keuning continued.

“But when you’re the one doing it, it is hard to force yourself to go on tour. The No. 1 thing I miss is the shows and the fans and the interaction. But I don’t miss the other 22 hours when you are not on stage and are away from home each day.

“I really don’t love traveling anymore. And I don’t miss looking outside an airplane window, or a bus, or a car on the way to a hotel, or a van on the way to the concert.”

And now that he is a solo artist and back with The Killers again?

“I don’t think I’ll stop making solo music anytime soon,” Keuning said. “But I am writing and recording again with The Killers and trying to give them as many musical ideas and options as I can. I’m looking at it as it’s the best of both worlds.”

The Killers have confirmed a short run of UK and Ireland tour dates to complement their headline slots at Reading & Leeds 2023 .

After topping the bill at the twin festivals next August, the Las Vegas-conceived band will head to Scotland, where there will hold their first-ever show in Edinburgh. The group will headline the Royal Highland Centre Showgrounds on August 29.

In September, The Killers will continue the brief tour at Belfast’s Boucher Road Playing Fields before heading to Stradbally to headline the 2023 edition of Electric Picnic.

Tickets for the Edinburgh and Belfast shows will both go on sale at 9am GMT on Monday (December 12). Edinburgh tickets will be available to purchase here , while Belfast tickets will go on sale here .

The short tour follows the band’s massive, sold-out stadium tour this summer , which saw The Killers play to 400,000 fans at shows, including two euphoric nights at London’s Emirates Stadium.

The new dates are the latest to be added to what looks set to be a busy schedule for The Killers next summer. Previously, the band were confirmed to be performing at Atlanta, GA’s Shaky Knees festival alongside Muse and The Lumineers.

Meanwhile, the group’s latest album, Pressure Machine , was released in 2021 and was followed up by the standalone single “boy” in August. Written before the songs that made up Pressure Machine , the themes explored in “boy” helped lead frontman and principal songwriter Brandon Flowers to the subjects that would eventually be the focus of that record.

“This was the first song written after we had to cancel the  Imploding The Mirage  tour due to the pandemic,” Flowers explained in a press release at the time. “I had recently moved back to Utah and started to make trips to Nephi, where I grew up. I found that the place I had wanted to get away from so desperately at 16 was now a place that I couldn’t stop returning to.

“I have a son approaching the age I was at that time in my life. With ‘boy’, I want to reach out and tell myself – and my sons – to not overthink it. And to look for the ‘white arrows’ in their lives. For me now, white arrows are my wife, children, my songs and the stage.”

Moscow concert attack live updates: More than 60 reported dead; ISIS claims responsibility

What we know about the moscow concert attack.

  • Men in camouflage broke into a Moscow concert hall and opened fire, shooting an unknown number of people, Russia’s prosecutor general said.
  • The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim, which was made on ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.
  • Russia's Investigative Committee said that more than 60 people are dead after the attack at Crocus City Hall. Officials have said more than 100 others were injured.
  • A fire also started inside Crocus City Hall, a large concert venue northwest of central Moscow. Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.
  • Russia officials said they were investigating the attack as a terrorist act.
  • A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the venue, which has a maximum capacity of more than 9,000 people.

Moscow bloodshed comes two decades after some of worst attacks in Russia

Phil Helsel

The shooting attacks in Moscow are the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country since the 2000s.

In 2004, militants from Chechnya and elsewhere took hostages at a school in Beslan in southern Russia.

The militants demanded a withdrawal from Chechnya. Hostages were kept in a gymnasium, and 334 died — half of them children — when gunfire and explosions erupted when it was stormed. Hostages’ families were critical of the rescue operation. Russian prosecutors later cleared authorities .

Two years prior, in 2002, Chechen separatists attacked the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and took more than 700 people hostage. Russian forces used gas, and 129 hostages died. The attackers were killed.

More recently, in 2017 a suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan killed 15 people as well as himself in an attack on a St. Petersburg subway. In 2013, two bombers killed a combined 34 people in attacks on a railway station and a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday at the Crocus City Hall venue.

Putin wishes victims well, deputy prime minister says

President Vladimir Putin is thinking of those injured in today’s attack and thanked doctors, a Russian government official said according to state media.

State media TASS reported that “Putin wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall to recover and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors, Golikova said,” referring to Tatiana Golikova deputy prime minister for social policy, labor, health and pension provision.

More than 60 dead, and death toll could grow, Russian agency says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Saturday that more than 60 people have died in the attack, and warned the number may increase.

“The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase,” according to the Investigative Committee, which is a federal state agency.

Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the security agency FSB are continuing to investigate, the committee said in a statement, and weapons and ammunition have been found.

U.S. warned Russia about planned terrorist attack in Moscow, NSC says

Monica Alba

The United States shared information about a potential terrorist attack in Moscow with Russia’s government earlier this month, a spokesperson for the National Security Council said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and said it was monitoring reports that extremists might attack large gatherings in Moscow.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin recently dismissed ‘provocative’ warning about potential attacks

In remarks that aired three days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “provocative statements” about potential terror attacks in Russia, and dismissed them.

Putin Russian Election Moscow

“I’ll remind you of recent, let’s say directly, provocative statements of certain official Western structures about potential terror attacks in Russia,” Putin said.

“All of this looks like obvious blackmail and an attempt to intimidate, destabilize our country,” he said before the state security agency FSB.

Putin in those remarks did not specify a country or warning. The U.S. embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds .

“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” the U.S. embassy warned.

Guards at concert hall didn't have guns, state news says

The Associated Press

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported.

Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

U.S. had been gathering intelligence that ISIS could attack Russia

The U.S. had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News.

That information led to a March 7 warning issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia about possible extremist attacks, including at concerts, urging people to stay away from large gatherings, one of the officials said.

That official said the claim of responsibility today by ISIS appears to be genuine, though no final assessment had been made about who was responsible.

Some Moscow concertgoers filmed events as they unfolded Friday night, when gunmen opened fire inside a theater and people ran to take cover in fear for their lives.

Witness says gunfire was first thought to be construction noise

A witness to today’s armed attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall told a state news agency that they first mistook the gunfire for sounds of an installation being dismantled.

“First, we started hearing typical loud pops, but it was impossible to understand that they were gunshots. We thought that something was falling, as exhibitions were being dismantled at that moment, and someone seemed to be dropping something large,” Mikhail Semyonov told TASS .

“Then, the bangs were getting more and more frequent. Suddenly, there was a scream, and the bangs started to be heard as bursts. Then it became clear that it was shooting,” he said.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack but does not provide proof

The terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow.

The group, also known as ISIS, did not provide any proof of its claim, which came from ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.

The group’s members have carried out a number of terror attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Shortly after the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all sports, cultural and other public events in Moscow this weekend. State news agency TASS also quoted Russia's cultural ministry as saying that mass and entertainment events in federal cultural institutions have been canceled in the coming days.

Zelenskyy adviser speaks out about attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser denied that Ukraine was involved in the deadly Crocus concert hall attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall (Moscow Region, Russia),” Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X. “It makes no sense whatsoever.”

No evidence has emerged to suggest Ukraine may have been involved, but Ukrainian officials may be trying to pre-empt accusations, as some Kremlin hawks have already started pointing at Kyiv.

Asked whether the shooting was at all tied to the war in Ukraine, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “There is no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians, were involved in the shooting, but again, this just broke. We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour have any connection to Ukraine.”

Videos posted to social media appear to show chaos inside Moscow's Crocus City Hall during and after a terrorist attack.

Some videos include what sound like gunshots and show men with rifles, as concertgoers frantically try to exit the venue.

Building in flames

At least 60 killed and scores wounded in Moscow concert hall attack

Islamic State claims responsibility after gunmen in combat gear opened fire and reportedly set off explosives at Crocus City Hall

  • Major terrorist attack at Moscow concert hall – latest updates
  • Moscow concert hall attack: what we know so far

At least 60 people have been killed and 145 wounded in Russia’s worst terror attack in years, as gunmen in combat fatigues opened fire and detonated explosives in a major concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow.

State news agency Ria on Saturday quoted a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee as saying the death toll could rise and that it was too early to say anything about the fate of the attackers. About 60 people were in serious condition, health officials said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack late on Friday, in a post on Telegram in which the group claimed its gunmen had managed to escape afterwards. A US official said Washington had intelligence confirming Islamic State’s claim.

Photos showed Crocus City Hall engulfed in flames as videos emerged showing at least four gunmen opening fire with automatic weapons as panicked Russians fled for their lives.

In one clip, three men in fatigues carrying rifles fired at point-blank range into bodies strewn about the lobby of the concert hall.

Officials said five children were among the victims of the attack, in which the assailants also apparently detonated explosives. At least two blasts took place at the concert hall on Friday evening, news agencies reported.

Video still showing chaotic scenes at the concern hall

By late evening, Russian authorities had launched a mass manhunt for the gunmen in the attack, warning residents in Moscow and its suburbs to look out for signs of the attackers. The Russian government did not immediately identify any of the suspects.

Video published online showed horrific scenes of some people begging for help from the roof of the concert hall as it burned behind them. Other video footage showed people screaming, crawling on their hands and knees out of the music venue or fleeing down stairwells.

One witness said he was about to settle into his seat when he heard “several machine gun bursts” and “a lot of screams”.

“I realised right away that it was automatic gunfire and understood that most likely it’s the worst: a terrorist attack,” the man, who gave his name as Alexei, told AFP.

Another concertgoer described scenes of panic as terrified people tried to escape. “A stampede began. Everyone ran to the escalator,” he told Reuters. “Everyone was screaming; everyone was running.”

At least three emergency helicopters had been deployed to extinguish the fire. There had been a partial collapse of the roof of the Crocus City Mall, local media reported. Shortly after midnight, the emergencies ministry said the fire had been contained.

An eyewitness told the Mash Telegram channel that there were “at least five” attackers and that they were “bearded”.

“They act like trained fighters,” the account read. “At the moment of entering the building, the guards and people standing at the door were killed. Then they blocked the main entrance.

“The terrorists are armed with [Kalashnikov] assault rifles. Some carried vests with various ammunition. At least two of the attackers are carrying backpacks, possibly with molotov cocktails.”

In his first comments on the shooting, President Vladimir Putin wished all those injured in the terrorist attack a speedy recovery. The Kremlin said he was being updated by security chiefs about the situation, including from Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Russian investigators published pictures of a Kalashnikov automatic weapon, vests with multiple spare magazines and bags of spent bullet casings. A grainy picture was published by some Russian media of two of the alleged attackers in a white car. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the Moscow government would cancel all cultural, sporting and other mass events for the weekend after the attack, as Russian railways and other major utilities said they were increasing security.

Sobyanin called the attack a “great tragedy”. At least 70 ambulances had been dispatched to the site.

Earlier this month, western countries led by the US had issued terror warnings and told their citizens not to join public gatherings in Russia.

On 8 March, the embassy wrote it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours”.

Islamic State said its fighters attacked on the outskirts of Moscow, “killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely.” The statement gave no further detail.

The US had intelligence confirming Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the shooting, a US official said, adding that Washington had warned Moscow in recent weeks of the possibility of an attack.

“We did warn the Russians appropriately,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, without providing any additional details.

Russian media reports said riot police units were sent to the area as people were being evacuated and Speznaz units of the Russian national guard began storming the building later on Friday evening. Some of the attackers may have escaped, the Russian news agency Baza reported.

The shootings at the concert hall were reminiscent of some of Europe’s worst terrorist incidents such as the attack on the Bataclan in Paris in November 2015. Russians are likely to recall the Nord Ost terrorist attack in Moscow in 2002, when gunmen took hostages at a theatre, ultimately leading to the deaths of 40 hostage takers and 132 hostages. .

The Moscow attack was the deadliest attack in Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege , in which 334 people, including 186 children, were killed after being held captive by militants for two days.

Vehicles of Russian emergency services are parked near the burning Crocus City Hall concert venue

The British embassy in Moscow condemned Friday’s attack. “We condemn the terrorist attack at the Moscow region’s Crocus City Hall. It’s a horrible tragedy. We offer sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those hurt and killed in today’s events,” the embassy said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

The UN security council condemned what it called a “heinous and cowardly terrorist attack.”

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the “images of the attack were just horrible and just hard to watch”. The White House had no indication that Ukraine was involved in the attack, Kirby added. Russia is fighting a major war in Ukraine.

Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in February in a Russian penal colony, described the attack as a “nightmare”, adding in a post on X: “Condolences to the families of the victims and recovery to the injured. All those involved in this crime must be found and held accountable.”

A top Ukrainian official said the country had no involvement in the attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential administration, wrote on X.

“It makes no sense whatsoever. Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods.”

Dmitry Medvedev, the ex-president of Russia and now deputy chairman of its security council, wrote that “if it is established that they are terrorists of the Kyiv regime, it’s impossible to treat them and those who inspired them differently.

“They all should be found and relentlessly destroyed as terrorists. Including officials of the state that committed such an evil thing. Death for death.”

There was no evidence that Ukraine had any involvement in the attacks.

The attack took place at a sold-out concert by the Russian Soviet-era rock band Piknik. Crocus City Hall, capacity 6,200, is one of the largest and most popular music venues in the Moscow oblast.

The warnings from the western embassies came shortly after Russia said it had foiled a planned shooting by an Afghan group linked to Islamic State.

The FSB said it had foiled an attack on a Moscow synagogue by Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan, known as Isis-Khorasan or Isis-K, and seeks a caliphate across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.

Putin changed the course of the Syrian civil war by intervening in 2015, supporting President Bashar al-Assad against the opposition and Islamic State.

Russian authorities had also recently carried out a series of raids against armed Islamist militants in the region of Ingushetia, leading to firefights between police and the fighters.Russian leader Vladimir Putin had called the March warnings from western embassies a “provocation”.

“All this resembles outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilise our society,” he said earlier this month.

Russia has not faced a large terrorist attack on its own territory since 2017, when 14 people were killed in a blast on the St Petersburg metro .

Suicide bombers killed 34 people in Volgograd in 2013 shortly before the Sochi Olympics. And in 2011, suicide bombers killed 30 people at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport.

Netflix ‘s latest true crime series Homicide: New York comes from Law & Order  creator  Dick Wolf  and tackles five notorious murder cases in New York City.

The series premiered Mar. 20, 2024 on the streaming giant and will be followed by  Homicide: Los Angeles , set to premiere later this year.

Homicide: New York isn’t Wolf’s first foray into the true crime genre. In addition to creating the Law & Order , Chicago ,  and  FBI  franchises, Wolf created the network investigative shows  Cold Justice  and  Nightwatch .

Want to learn more about the various killers investigated in the new series? Here’s everything you need to know.

Carnegie Deli Murders

On May 10, 2001, five people were shot by Andre Smith and Sean Salley in an apartment above the Carnegie Deli. Three of the victims died, one of whom was  Dirty Dancing  actor Jennifer Stahl. The two attackers seemingly intended to rob Stahl for the money she made through her business selling marijuana to her high-end clientele.

Salley and Smith were each found guilty of three counts of second-degree murder, four robbery, and two weapons counts. They both received a sentence of 120 years and are currently serving their sentences.

Central Park Slaying

Two 15-year-olds Daphne Abdela and Christopher Vasquez were convicted of the manslaughter of Michael McMorrow, whose body was found in Central Park Lake on May 23, 1997 with multiple slash and stab wounds. Per documents from the court case , McMorrow’s “abdomen had been cut open and part of his intestines were exposed.”

During the trial, Abdela took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and Vasquez, her boyfriend at the time, was charged with the stabbing.

They each served about seven years in prison for manslaughter in the first degree and were released in 2004. As part of their parole, they were barred from seeing each other.

Vanished on Wall Street

Cleaner Eridania Rodriguez went missing on July 7, 2009 while working in an office building on Wall Street. Rodriquez’s coworker notified her family of her absence when she didn’t report for lunch. After multiple days of searching, Rodriquez was found “tied up” in an air conditioning vent in the office building. Police found DNA underneath her fingernails which matched Joseph Pabon, who worked as a maintenance man in the same building.

Pabon was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder in the second degree and kidnapping in the first degree. He is currently serving his sentence.

Midtown Slasher

On March 21, 1996, businessman Howard Pilmar was stabbed 48 times in his office in Manhattan. Pilmar’s wife, Roslyn Pilmar, and her brother, Evan Wald, were found guilty of the murder roughly 20 years later. The two were suspects from the beginning, but there wasn’t enough evidence to convict them until the case was reopened in 2013.

Pilmar and Wald were each found guilty of murder in the second degree and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Philip Pilmar, son of Howard and Roslyn Pilmar, asked for leniency for his mother during the trial.

East Harlem Serial Killer

Arohn Kee was arrested in 1999 for the murder of Rasheeda Washington, Paola Illera, and Johalis Castro, and four rapes. The assailant was caught after kidnapping 15-year-old Angelique Stalling from her home in Brooklyn. The two were found in a hotel room in Miami, Florida after which they were flown back to New York where Stalling returned home and Kee was charged for his crimes.

Kee was sentenced to 409 years to life in prison.

Homicide: New York is currently streaming on Netflix.
