(Great Falls, MT) – Nov. 30, 2020 – The Great Falls Voyagers are excited to join MLB & The Pioneer Baseball League in announcing today that Professional Baseball is here to stay in Great Falls with the formation of the new Major League Baseball Partner League. The Great Falls Voyagers will join 7 other teams in the Pioneer League for a 92 game season, beginning in late spring and concluding in early September.

With the assurance that professional baseball will remain in Great Falls, the community can anticipate a 2021 season (pending COVID-19 restrictions) and the return of all the family fun including fireworks, non-profit fundraising nights and countless giveaways and community activities. The new league will also give fans more opportunities to see the Voyagers with 46 home games compared to the 38 home games in the previous league’s format.

Quote from Vinney Purpura CEO & Principal Owner: “The Great Falls Voyagers are excited about the new partnership agreement the Pioneer League has with Major League Baseball. We look forward to the resumption of America’s pastime in our community and region.”

Quote from Scott Reasoner – Voyagers President: “We’re thrilled to be a part of the newly revamped Pioneer League - Welcoming in a strong new partnership with MLB and giving our fans the opportunity to continue to come out and enjoy high level professional baseball in Great Falls! We could not be more appreciative of all the support we have received during the past year and look forward to many more summer nights of family fun and community out at Centene Stadium”

Quote from Mayor Bob Kelly – Great Falls, MT: “The potential of return of baseball to our community is the best news of 2020. In these times where isolation has become the norm, the idea of a summer with competitive baseball, neighbors, and community celebrations is helping us all get through this pandemic. Professional baseball is a unique opportunity for a community like ours to experience the greatest aspects of the game; solid competition, international fellowship and entertainment for the entire family. In small communities baseball is so much more than a game. It is an economic driver, a team to rally round, and a way to unwind surrounded by families and friends.”

Great Falls is no longer a White Sox affiliate after minor league restructuring

The Great Falls Voyagers have been affiliated with the White Sox since 2003, but that has come to an end.

As part of the long expected restructuring of Minor League Baseball, Major League Baseball announced that the Pioneer League will be a partner league beginning in 2021. All eight teams, including the Voyagers, will shift from being an advanced rookie league to being an independent league of sorts. The league will fall under the MLB umbrella and MLB will initially fund operating expenses, but players will not be affiliated with MLB organizations. The full structure of the league is still unknown, including how Pioneer League players could join MLB organizations.

We must say one more huge thank you to the @whitesox . We could not have asked for a better partner. The players and staff were a part of our community and made Great Falls a better place. While our partnership changes, The White Sox will always be a part of our Voyager family. pic.twitter.com/Dz4FhjDk1z — Great Falls Voyagers (@gfvoyagers) December 1, 2020

The Pioneer League is the third league to reformat for 2021. The Appalachian League, which the White Sox had an affiliate in Bristol, Tenn., from 1995-2013, is switching from rookie ball to a collegiate wood-bat league . A chunk of teams, mostly from the Short-Season A ball New York-Penn League, will also comprise a draft league .

More shifting is to come, but for now we know the White Sox are down to one rookie level affiliate. The White Sox have an Arizona League affiliate that plays at the team’s spring training complex. This will alter how the White Sox, and all organizations, approach development at the rookie ball level. The White Sox sent more experienced draft picks to Great Falls. High school picks and younger foreign players often went to Arizona. The gap from Arizona to Low-A Kannapolis had been more significant than Great Falls to Kannapolis, but the Arizona League may get more older prospects now.

The Voyagers, which took that name in 2008 after being called the Great Falls White Sox, were one of the more successful teams in the organization. Half the Pioneer League’s eight teams make the playoffs, but the Voyagers made the postseason 11 times from 2007-2019. They also won the league championship in 2011 and 2018.

The Pioneer League’s shift was one of the most expected moves from Minor League Baseball’s restructuring. Changes are expected in full season leagues as well, but those are less clear for now. For starters, the Trenton Thunder of the Double-A Eastern League are moving to that newly formed draft league. No White Sox affiliates are in consideration for anything that drastic, but teams and leagues could shift levels. On top of all this, there’s still uncertainty about the state of the pandemic come the 2021 minor league season.

Since 1939, the Pioneer Baseball League has operated in the Mountain West region as an MLB affiliate league. Beginning in 2021, the Pioneer League became an MLB Partner League with clubs in Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Colorado and has now expanded its geographic reach to California with teams in Oakland and Davis.

The Pioneer League is a true player development league, with players having less than 3 years of professional experience.  The PBL is focused on innovation and experimental rules, having initiated the shootout style “Knockout Round” to replace extra innings, designated pinch hitters and pinch runners, and other cutting-edge rules and fan enhancements.  The PBL has a 96-game slate from mid-May through mid-September. Voyagers: New Partner League team goes into its past; brings back Thompson to manage team

Tommy Thompson, won led the Great Falls Voyagers to a 47-28 record in 2016, will be back with the MLB Partner League squad when they start their 92-game slate May 26.

The Pioneer League's designation as a Major League Baseball "Partner League" has given the Great Falls Voyagers opportunity to reach back into its past for their next manager.

And they didn't have to reach very far back, either.

Tommy Thompson has been brought back to lead the Voyagers into the Pioneer League's rebirth from an Advanced Rookie League to an independent minor league.

According to a press release issued by the ballclub, Thompson has signed an agreement to manage the club for the next three seasons.

“I am extremely excited to be back in baseball, and I appreciate the opportunity that the Voyagers have given me,” Thompson said. “I consider this an opportunity of a lifetime to manage and help develop players to reach their goals of getting signed by a Major League team.”

This will be Thompson’s second stint as manager for the Voyagers, the first coming with the former Chicago White Sox affiliate in 2016, when the team amassed an impressive 47-28 record. He has held various roles with the ChiSox farm system over the years, helping develop players from 2011-2020.

A few of his charges have played in the Big League, including Aaron Bummer, Bernardo Flores and Matt Foster.

“My wife and I are excited to come back to Great Falls and help spread the word about baseball in this wonderful community,” said Thompson.

“We are so excited to have Tommy back as our manager for the 2021 season,” Voyagers' president Scott Reasoner said. “His love for the game and his care to help our players develop is second to none. We are very lucky to have him in our dugout moving forward!”

The Voyagers first home game of the season is schedule for Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m.

After 17 seasons, Great Falls no longer part of White Sox system

The Great Falls Voyagers are no longer part of the White Sox, but at least they’re not extinct.

Two big dominoes of minor-league realignment fell on Monday, with the Pioneer League joining the Appalachian League as former short-season rookie-ball leagues knocked out of the affiliated system. While the Appalachian League is being transformed into a summer amateur wood bat league, the Pioneer League is a “professional partner league.” It joins the ranks of the Atlantic League, American Association and Frontier League, but the Pioneer League will be tailored toward recently undrafted amateurs and other players released early in their careers.

All eight members of the Pioneer League will continue to operate, with the only change being the relocation of the Orem Owlz to Windsor, Colo., where they will be the Northern Colorado Owlz.

It’s a downgrade for the Voyagers, but as the Great Falls Tribune’s reaction shows , it’s better than no baseball at all. The league will get some early assistance from Major League Baseball as it shifts into an independent model tasked with acquiring its own players, after which it will expect to be self-sustaining. One point in its favor: The Pioneer League drew fairly well for its level. In fact, it had more support in the Mountain West than the Florida State League, which is expected to remain an A-ball league.

The Pioneer League team with the lowest average attendance outdrew more than half of Florida State League teams in 2019. This is the concern: MLB is taking affiliated baseball away from communities that actually care and leaving it in ones that don't. pic.twitter.com/UZLHymGDvA — Kyle Glaser (@KyleAGlaser) November 30, 2020

What the FSL lacks in fans it makes up for in efficiency, as those teams largely use their spring training camps. The Pioneer League had been hanging out in Rocky Mountain outposts since 1939. Its seclusion is a big part of its charm, but if you’re not the sentimental type, it’s a loose end to clip off.

The White Sox had been partners with the Voyagers since 2003 — long enough that Chris Getz could go from making his pro debut in Great Falls in 2005 to sending players there as the team’s player development director. He didn’t sound like a fan of the proposed streamlining at the start of the year .

“I’m a proponent of more players, to be honest with you,” said Getz, adding that the Sox would search for another affiliate to replace the function of Great Falls if it were eliminated. “We’re all still kind of gathering information. I’m not sure how this whole thing is going to play out. We’ve enjoyed being in Great Falls. We continue to be there. The front office there has been great to us. Personally, I’ve had good memories up there as a player.”

It’s unclear how the White Sox might replace Great Falls, if it’s indeed possible. Perhaps they can run two Arizona League teams, or maybe this paragraph in Baseball America’s report suggests teams might be able to professionally partner with Pioneer League teams in some capacity:

The Missoula Paddleheads in their release announcing their participation in the new league suggested that some of the league’s players could be affiliated players under contract with MLB teams who have been loaned to the Pioneer League clubs. Multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations said that no such agreement for player loans has been reached between MLB and the Pioneer League.

BA then reported that Major League Baseball is increasing the organizational roster limit from 150ish player to 180 , creating the possibility for a second complex team or alternate arrangements such as the one Missoula may have leaked. However, if this is indeed where the White Sox’s connection to Great Falls closes, you can call the separation amicable.

As for the other domino, Major League Baseball announced the creation of the MLB Draft League , a six-team setup that has officially named five teams so far — four from the short-season A-ball New York-Penn League, as well as the Trenton Thunder, formerly of the Eastern League.

The MLB Draft League will play a 68-game schedule starting in late May, and Baseball America laid out the arrangement :

While high school players will be allowed to participate, the league is primarily designed for players who have just completed their junior and senior years of college baseball and are therefore draft eligible. Draft-eligible JUCO players (who are eligible to be drafted after each year of college) would also be a potential target for the six-team league. The league will begin play in late May and run until mid August. The league is designed to offer draft-eligible players a chance to play in the leadup to the draft, which has been moved from its traditional early June date to an early July date that coincides with MLB’s All-Star weekend.

It strikes me as the equivalent of an Arizona Fall League, where a top prospect only stands to lose prestige with a poor showing, but prospects who were injured or blocked might have a stage for standing out.

Add it all up, and Major League Baseball has reassigned 23 of 43 affiliated teams it intends to contract.

Writing about the White Sox for a 16th season, first here, then at South Side Sox, and now here again. Let’s talk curling.

Speaking of minor-league ball in northern states, the Mike Veeck-owned St. Paul Saints are about to become the Twins’ AAA affiliate:

The St. Paul Saints will leave independent baseball to become the Class AAA team for the Twins. What’s unclear is if the Saints are paying the entire cost of entering affiliated ball — reports over the summer indicated a cost of as much as $20 million — or if the Twins will contribute.

Man, I wish we had an affiliate within 500 miles, let alone in the next town over. Would’ve been nice to beat the Cubs to South Bend.

They did! The South Bend White Sox then Silver Hawks were the Sox A team from 88 – 97.

Yep, an unfortunate decision. Before that, losing the longstanding Iowa Oaks affiliation to the Cubs after 1980 played into the Tribune Corporation’s successful marketing of Chicago’s lesser team in the western periphery.

Wow, I live about 3 blocks from the St. Paul Saints’ stadium and I hadn’t heard that the Saints were to become a Twins affiliate (asinwreck is really on top of things). There was a undeniable charm watching a team composed primarily of skilled players not quite talented enough to hold a place with a Major league organization. Some players entertained hopes of earning a look from a big league club. Occasionally there’d be a Darryl Strawberry or JD Drew; Major leaguers with career paths that landed them in the Northern league for a season. But, most of the Saints’ players were clearly playing because they loved playing the game even though their abilities were a tad short of elite. I do hope that sense of playing for the love of the game will not be lost now that the Saints’ are a Twins affiliate.

I am guessing since we haven’t heard anything, the Sox affiliates will be the same minus one or two low level. I was holding out hope they would move a team to Schaumburg, Joliet, Rosemont, Peoria or the like.

The Sox have announced their coaches. In addition to Miguel Cairo and Ethan Katz, Dave Duncan’s son Shelley joins the staff as “analytics coordinator,” and Howie Clark (late of the Orioles) replaces Scott Coolbaugh as the assistant hitting coach. McEwing moves to 3B coach, and Boston, Menechino, and Hasler have unchanged responsibilities.

And there is news regarding the manager aside from his staff. James Fegan reports Dec. 21 is now a date of particular interest in Tony La Russa’s DUI case:

A change of plea hearing has now been scheduled for Dec. 21, a Maricopa County Justice Courts spokesperson confirmed. Two misdemeanor counts stemming from La Russa’s Feb. 24 arrest in Phoenix were filed in Kyrene Justice Court on Nov. 16. An initial not guilty plea was submitted on La Russa’s behalf by attorney Larry Kazan, and a pre-trial conference was scheduled for Dec. 28.

Josh Nelson

The Change of Plea is scheduled for 10:00 am MT/ 11:00 am CT.

Just in case if you were wondering when there would be more shared about the DUI case.

UPDATE: Spokesman for Maricopa County Justice Courts says the expectation is that Tony La Russa "will plead guilty to charges of some sort" during his 12/21 hearing. Might have to wait for a plea agreement for final details, though, and that may not arrive until later this month. pic.twitter.com/WDSKGia13D — Jon Seidel (@SeidelContent) December 1, 2020

Considering how concrete the evidence was, this seemed like the only possible outcome.

I will be very curious to see what (if anything) the White Sox to do address the “seriousness” of driving a 5000lb SUV while drunk.

Do you honestly expect them to address it? I’d be surprised if they so much as make a milquetoast press statement.

“Tony deserves all the assumptions and protections granted to everyone in a court of law, especially while this is a pending matter,” the team said Thursday in a statement. “Once his case reaches resolution in the courts, we will have more to say. The White Sox understand the seriousness of these charges.”

When they say things like that, I do expect them to say speak up (not holding my breath for anything substantive, but who knows.) The question is can the 1.5 White Sox beat reporters left pry it out of the org?

Does anyone have any links or sources to the fate of other minor league teams low-A and higher that have been dropped? I’m curious about the Charleston Riverdogs (which was a Yankees affiliate). They were my main means to check out Kannapolis for one or two series per year, and it is a nice ballpark with pretty decent attendance. Mike Veeck and Bill Murray are owners, too.

Great Falls Voyagers still planning full summer despite baseball cancellation

GREAT FALLLS — Scott Reasoner, general manager of the Great Falls Voyagers, knew a Minor League Baseball cancellation was coming at some point. But that didn’t make Tuesday’s news that the 2020 season was shelved any easier to stomach.

“Always a bummer,” Reasoner said. “You know, there’s been professional baseball in Great Falls continuously for over 50 years. So we’re just taking one on the chin with COVID-19 like a lot of folks are.”

The Voyagers saw the writing on the wall months ago when Major League Baseball postponed the start of its season and was involved in a lengthy labor dispute with the players union. Major League Baseball supplies their minor league affiliates with players, and it was clear early that it had no intention of doing so this year.

So the Voyagers spent the past few weeks reaching out to sponsors and season-ticket holders and offering new options as they make the transition to a summer with no baseball.

“Most people have been great and understanding. If anyone wants a refund, they can get one no problem, or folks that want to roll it over to 2021 or look at some packages that we have this year with the event schedule we have going on," Reasoner said.

The Voyagers baseball team won’t take the field in 2020, but Centene Stadium will still see plenty of use. Reasoner and staff have started the “Save Summer at Centene” event series. From July through the end of August, the stadium will host things like kickball, movie nights, trivia nights and more with limited capacity, social distancing and sanitation guidelines in place.

“Having people reach out to us and our sponsors and the community support at large has really been tremendous,” Reasoner said. “You’re not maybe sponsoring a baseball game, but you sponsor a corn hole tournament or a movie night or something. It’s a little different. But it's been a lot of fun and the response has been tremendous.”

The future beyond 2020 is uncertain. Major and Minor League Baseball are engaged in contentious negotiations for a new agreement in 2021 to replace the old one that expires in September. Major League Baseball has proposed a reduction in minor league teams, and the Voyagers are one of more than 40 clubs in line to lose their affiliation.

“We're beyond confident that we'll have professional baseball here in 2021, and obviously that could be a different form,” Reasoner said. “But things are difficult because you can't make a schedule because you don't know what league you’ll be in and you don't know what's going on. So it's a really challenging time here in baseball, in general.”

He continued: “That said, we’re better off than a lot of teams just because of that community support in Great Falls.”

And while many teams across the country are shuttering operations, laying off staff and cutting payroll, the Voyagers, locally owned by the Great Falls Baseball club and president Vinny Purpura, are committed to their employees and providing a community outlet for the summer.

“We made the move forward to try to be an asset for our community this summer when there isn't a lot going on,” Reasoner said. “We have the space that we can do small events very safely.”

Wanted: host families for Great Falls Voyagers players

great falls voyagers mlb affiliate

GREAT FALLS — The Great Falls Voyagers are looking for families who would be willing to host their players for the upcoming summer season.

“It's a great opportunity, you get to house a potential MLB player,” said John Burks, General Manager for the Great Falls Voyagers. “It's just a great opportunity to meet players, kind of interact with them.”

The main responsibility of a host family is to have a bed for the player to sleep, but many hosts find that the relationship becomes so much more.

  • Obituary: Olivia "Yaya" Ruth Baroch

  • Blackfeet Nation: 'Lily Gladstone Day'

“It became an awesome experience with the players where they became like family to us," said Hillary Becker, who will be hosting for her second season.

Hillary and her son Drake love having the players around and find the connections they make incredibly strong.

“I had one player named Dylan who we would have almost cooking wars,” said Hillary, “and he would show me how the best way to make ribs were, I would show him the best way. And it was just a fun family competition every Monday that we had.”

A host family receives two season passes to games and $600 per player. The hosting program allows the players to focus more on their game while also getting involved with the community. Families find that the players often appreciate having a home away from home, a family to come home to at the end of the day.

“We kind of make it a every Sunday is family day,” said Lori Badgley, who will be hosting for her fourth year this summer, “And so, you know, the early games, we're able to come home and barbecue and we make it game night. So that's kind of the one night that we know we're able to spend with the boys.”

Badgley’s daughters Madyson and Sophia also love having the players around, saying they some of their best memories are after games playing with the players in the dark, watching movies with them, or even facing off against them in a Wii game.

Both the Becker and Badgley family are excited to meet the players for the 2024 season, and cannot wait to grow their family for the coming summer months.

”I'd say try it. You know, reach out if you have questions, reach out to another host family, reach out to the organization, give it a chance,” Badgley said. “I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.”

For more information about hosting, contact John Burks at [email protected] or click here .
