Salt-N-Pepa I Love the '90s

Ready for a huge dose of ’90s nostalgia?

Vanilla Ice , Salt-N-Pepa and Coolio, along with other popular ’90s staples, are joining the I Love the ’90s tour. The tour has already had several sold-out shows this spring. It will be kicked into full gear April 15 in Greenville, S.C., and will last through October.

The I Love the ’90s tour is part of the throwback trend of concerts in recent months, which includes the iHeart80s tour hosted by iHeartMedia in Los Angeles, featuring Billy Idol, Culture Club and Rick Springfield.

Cheryl “Salt” James told  USA Today  that the whole experience and the fan reactions have been “surprisingly amazing.”

“It feels like you’re taking people back to a time in their lives that they really enjoyed. It’s just one big ’90s party,” she said.

However, she says Salt-N-Pepa’s performance style has changed since they first started. It’s no longer about entertaining the crowd, but rather having a good time.

“We just have fun with the crowd and the crowd has fun with us,” James said.

More Salt-N-Pepa, please: '90s tour adds dates

Sandra 'Pepa' Denton, left, and Cheryl 'Salt' James of '90s rap group Salt-N-Pepa.

Salt-N-Pepa is here to shake up your summer.

The Push It trio is hitting the road on the I Love the '90s Tour, which kicks off April 15 in Greenville, S.C., and stops in 29 cities through late October. The nostalgia-driven trek — which has already played a handful of sold-out shows this spring — boasts a stacked lineup including Vanilla Ice, Kid 'n Play, Coolio, Young MC, All-4-One and Color Me Badd.

The response to the throwback concerts has so far been "surprisingly amazing," says Cheryl "Salt" James, 50, one third of the hip-hop group with Sandra "Pepa" Denton and Deidra "DJ Spinderella" Roper. "It feels like you're taking people back to a time in their lives that they really enjoyed. It's just one big '90s party."

James talks to USA TODAY about old-school hip hop, tour essentials and what to expect from their shows:

Q: What do you miss most about the '90s?

A: The music was more diverse, especially in relation to hip hop. You had so many choices of women who represented different voices. Latifah was the queen. Salt-N-Pepa brought fun fashion and femininity to hip hop. Lauryn Hill was the consciousness. Foxy Brown was (hardcore). Lil' Kim was sexy. MC Lyte was strong. Missy (Elliott) was innovative and super creative. It was more of an interesting time for hip hop: the fashions that were being created, the trends that were being set.

Q: Are there any women in rap who you like now?

A: I need to do my homework. I went online and listened to a few people, and nobody has particularly grabbed me. A lot of what I heard was not for me, so I'm still looking for something new.

Q: What's on your set list for this tour?

A: Obviously all the classics. The show is very interactive. When we do  Whatta Man , we pull a bunch of guys onstage and have fun with them. During (Spinderella's) DJ set, we celebrate girl power and bring a bunch of girls onstage and party with them. We do some album cuts that everybody might not know, but we say in the beginning of our show, "This is not a show, this is a Salt-N-Pepa experience." We say that because, back in the day, performing felt more like, "We are here to entertain you." But now it feels like we are hanging out with friends and we don't feel pressure to put on a show. We just have fun with the crowd and the crowd has fun with us.

Q: Who are you most excited to hang out with on the road?

A: Kid 'n Play. They're family. We grew up in the same camp, Hurby "Luv Bug" (Azor) was our producer. We hang out with them. (Christopher "Kid" Reid) is hilarious: keeps us cracking up and keeps us going, so it's fun being able to hang with all the boys.

Q: What can't you leave home without?

A: I have a Pillow Pet that I've had with me forever. His name is Oreo, he's a panda. Literally, I'm walking through the airport like a big kid holding that panda. All the other kids with Pillow Pets are stopping and looking at me like I'm crazy. And I have to have my UGGs. Even if we're in Florida, my UGGs are going to be in my suitcase.

All-4-One reveal details behind '90s tour: 'What's old becomes new again'

The R&B group behind mega-hit 'I Swear' gear up for this summer's nostalgic I Love The '90s run

Californian crooners All-4-One stormed the charts in 1994 with their hit single “I Swear.” The song — a cover of country singer John Michael Montgomery’s mild hit from 1993 — ruled the summer in ’94, spending 11 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. (It would’ve had the biggest streak of 1994, had Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” not enjoyed 14 weeks atop the Hot 100 that fall.)

Now, All-4-One has plans to rule another summer, albeit in a different way: The group will appear on the I Love the ’90s Tour that kicks off Friday in Greenville, South Carolina and also includes Vanilla Ice, Salt-n-Pepa, Coolio, and more.

EW connected with one of the group’s singers, Jamie Jones, to get the scoop about what All-4-One has in store for the tour, why ’90s nostalgia is so hot right now, and how, exactly, an R&B group got convinced to cover a country tune in the first place. (Hint: It involves Whitney Houston.)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can fans expect from the tour? JAMIE JONES: A lot of fun. The thing I love about music is it always remembers. Music has such a cool way of attaching itself to your memories and emotions. When you hear a song, you can remember what you were doing, who you were with, what you were wearing, what the situation was the first time you heard it. The cool thing about these tours is that feeling of nostalgia, because time goes by so fast. You turn around [and] you’ve got kids, a house. When people come to the show, they leave a lot happier than they came because of that feeling of being able to go back when time was simpler.

What are you planning for your sets? When you’re in this type of show it’s what I call “hit it and quit it”: You come out with the hits, blast them, and people hopefully want more. But we might have something up our sleeves.

Why do you think ’90s nostalgia is so hot right now? Times are changing. It used to be that my parents, their music to me was old school. We were all interested in old school stuff, whether it was ’70s or ’60s or whatever the case is. Now our parents are grandparents and we’re the parents.

Our kids, when they see pictures of us, they see some of the trends that we were doing — and now you see folks doing them again. I walk around all the time and I see little cool kids with hightop fades like I had. They left and then they came back. I see a lot of — and I’m doing quotations with my hands — “Retro Jordans.” I remember when those joints came out — I had those! They weren’t retro, they were just new shoes. What’s old becomes new again.

Music and pop culture and all that stuff, it’s a circle, it’s always going round. Music and pop culture is something that you share that you pass on.

Tell me about the origins of “I Swear.” Our first album was completely done being mastered. Doug Morris, who was the president of our label Atlantic Records called us into his office and played us this country song [by John Michael Montgomery]. We listen to it and are like, “It’s a good song — what else do you want from us?” And he was like, “Well, I want you guys to record it.” And I was like, “You do know we are R&B right?” And he said he wanted us to work with David Foster, who did Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” I was the one who was most hesitant about it. I said “Our album’s in mastering. What are we going to do?” Morris said, “You let me worry about that.”

After we recorded it with David at his Malibu house, I thought to myself, “It’s a really good song!” And I’ll never forget [the response]: During our first gigs at Disneyland Grad Nites and I remember each week we thought, “Oh my God! We can’t believe it! Our song went number one today!” And then next weekend, “It’s been two weeks!” Then three weeks, four weeks. It just kept going. Eleven weeks later, we were still number one. We were shocked. It’s the type of success everyone hopes and prays for.

Can you tell me about your new 20th anniversary album Twenty+ ? It’s called Twenty+ because it has been about 23 years — we were just a little bit late getting the album together at the 20-year mark. We did 14 new songs and then reimagined the hits. We redid them because we’re at such different places as singers that we feel like we’re in our prime and sing so much better now than before. There’s some great All-4-One love ballads, but then there’s also some of those fun, feel good ’90s-inspired type records as well. We’re super excited and happy about it.

Color Me Badd Part of I Love the ’90s Tour

Mark Calderon Talks Then and Now

2016 90s tour

What do Kool & the Gang and Bon Jovi have in common? Both bands figured in the ascension of multiplatinum recording artists Color Me Badd (CMB), who perform a middle set on the I Love the ’90s bill at the S.B. Bowl on Sunday, July 3. The band, known for its amalgamated style that blends hip-hop samples, pop, and R&B, is on tour with Vanilla Ice, Salt-N-Pepa, and Tone Loc. “We kind of give the audience a break from the rap,” said CMB’s Mark Calderon, laughing.

As new jack swing leaders in the early 1990s, the quartet of Romeos — Bryan Abrams, Sam Watters, Kevin Thornton, and Calderon — dubbed Color Me Badd conquered the earth with a succession of crooning hits, led by “I Wanna Sex You Up” and “I Adore Mi Amor.” Their rise to fame began in the middle of the country and is as colorful as the band’s moniker. “Bryan [Abrams] and I, we started the group in 1984 in Oklahoma City in the hallways of our school,” Calderon said, remembering how they originally met throwing down in a sing-off. “I was like, man, I’m just gonna sing with this guy, forget about singing against him.”

Calderon brought in Watters and Thornton and, despite teen awkwardness, the four nutted up the moxie to perform guerilla-style for some major acts, including Bon Jovi, Kool & the Gang, and Huey Lewis and the News. “We knew that we were good. Being in Oklahoma City, you had to take any breaks you could,” Calderon said of their rogue auditioning techniques.

In 1987, they spotted Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, of the hair metal kings Bon Jovi, exiting a Penn Square Mall movie theater and took advantage of the chance encounter. They duo were tired and heading back to their hotel, Calderon remembered, but the ambitious teens asked the New Jersey singer to let them perform an a cappella number (“Daddy’s Home”). Initially wary, Bon Jovi was so blown away he invited CMB to open their concert the next night before 20,000 people.

While that experience gave them exposure, it didn’t seal CMB’s pro deal. Their actual big break came one year after their Bon Jovi run-in when they met Kool & the Gang. The famed funk band came through Oklahoma City as part of the educational initiative “It’s Kool to Stay in School,” a reward for the most attentive students (which definitely did not include Calderon, Abrams, and Watters). “We didn’t have perfect attendance; we skipped school to attend the ‘It’s Kool to Stay in School’ party,” said Calderon, laughing. But their impromptu performance impressed Robert “Kool” Bell, who helped them land management. “It hit so fast, we didn’t know what was going on,” said Calderon of their catapult to fame.

Although “I Adore Mi Amor” was a #1 hit for the group in 1991, it is the ubiquitous “I Wanna Sex You Up” that is perhaps Color Me Badd’s best remembered song (it peaked at #2 on the U.S. charts), thanks to the film New Jack City . “We got our record deal off of ‘I Adore Mi Amore,’” Calderon said, but when Giant Records hosted a call for the New Jack City soundtrack, Elliot Straite (Dr. Freeze), who had just produced the monster Bell Biv DeVoe hit “Poison,” worked his magic on “Sex You Up,” which made the soundtrack. “The song just took off like a rocket,” Calderon recalled.

With changing consumer tastes, CMB’s popularity declined across the 1990s, and the band went through lineup changes. Watters left the group in 1998 to produce — scoring hits with Jessica Simpson, Céline Dion, Kelly Clarkson, and 98 Degrees — and hasn’t returned since. Thornton, in CMB as recently as 2015, is out again. Still Calderon and Abrams, who have remained the group’s core, have continued to put out records and attract strange bedfellows — CMB collaborated with Insane Clown Posse on the 2012 song “Ghetto Rainbows.” Said Calderon of the horror-core group, “They’ve always been fans of ours. They’re just really good guys.” Recently, Calderon and Abrams inducted Adam Emil of Chicago to complete CMB as a trio and recorded an upcoming single, “In Case You Didn’t Know.” Calderon promises a new album circa 2017.

2016 90s tour

As for the tour, the I Love the ’90s Bowl stop could not be tastier: Vanilla Ice — he of “Ice Ice Baby” and reality shows such as The Surreal Life — headlines a bill that includes Salt-N-Pepa (“Push It,” “Shoop”), Tone Loc (“Wild Thing,” “Funky Cold Medina”), and Young MC (“Bust a Move”), and, of course, Color Me Badd. (Coolio, All-4-One, Kool Moe Dee, Kid ’n Play, and Rob Base are also part of the tour lineup, depending on the market.)

2016 90s tour

Surprisingly, it took this yearlong tour, which began in January, for Calderon to meet many of his early-’90s chart-topping, urban pop peers. Back in the day, CMB only met Salt-N-Pepa a few times, he said. “Rob [Van Winkle, a k a Vanilla Ice]: [I’m] just getting to know him. Tone Loc, Coolio, Rob Base: They’ve been great. We’re all grown up; we all have families,” Calderon added. “Backstage, everyone gets along. No one’s big-headed.”

The concerts have been high-energy, and during their stage time, CMB re-creates the choreography from their videos. “Everybody stays on their feet,” Calderon said. “We definitely burn a lot of calories up there.”

Still, everything smooths out when CMB performs the slow-burning “The Earth, the Sun, the Rain,” the calliope-kissed bounce of “All 4 Love,” the Valentino-meets-Banderas, bilingual-ballad charms of “I Adore Mi Amor,” and the libidinous “I Wanna Sex You Up.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” Calderon said. “You know every song nonstop.”

I Love the ’90s, featuring Color Me Badd, Vanilla Ice, Salt-N-Pepa, Tone Loc, and Young MC, takes over the S.B. Bowl stage (1122 N. Milpas St.) Sunday, July 3. For tickets and information, call 962-7411 or see sbbowl.com .

Salt-N-Pepa

This set may require some love for the ’80s as well. These Grammy-winning hip-hop veterans rolled out of Queens in 1986 with a platinum debut called “Hot, Cool & Vicious,” conquering the mainstream with such hits as "Push It," "Expression," "Do You Want Me," "Let's Talk About Sex," "Shoop" and "Whatta Man," their collaboration with En Vogue. They picked up a Grammy for “None of Your Business” in 1995, two years before their latest album, “Brand New,” hit the streets. In 2010, they received a BET I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award. In addition to James, the trio includes Sandra "Pepa" Denton and Deidra "DJ Spinderella" Roper.

What have they been up to lately?

Salt-N-Pepa disbanded in 2002 but reunited four years later to perform “Whatta Man” with En Vogue at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors. The following year, “The Salt-N-Pepa Show,” a reality show, premiered on VH1 and ran for two seasons. In 2011, they went out on a package tour called Salt-N-Pepa’s Legends of Hip Hop with Whodini, Rob Base, Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh and others. A year later, they shared a bill with Public Enemy in Brooklyn as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series. And in 2014, they appeared in a Geico commercial, doing “Push It.”

Vanilla Ice

Robert Matthew Van Winkle is best remembered in the mainstream for the “Under Pressure”-sampling “Ice Ice Baby,” which holds the distinction of being the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard Hot 100. A second single, “Play That Funky Music,” also hit the Top 5.

What has he been up to lately?

In 2009, “The Vanilla Ice Project,” a home-improvement reality show in which the rapper sets aside the rhymes to flex his mad skills as a handyman, premiered on the DIY Network. Season Six is airing now, with a DVD box set of the award-winning series’ first season due before the year is out. His latest album, “WTF — Wisdom, Tenacity & Focus,” hit the streets in 2011.

Kid ’N Play

They were known for their positive lyrics, pop sensibilities and one of hip-hop’s greatest hairdos — Christopher “Kid” Reid’s 10-inch hi-top fade. Kid and Christopher “Play” Martin rolled out of Queens in 1988 with a debut called “2 Hype” and followed with two more albums, topping the rap charts with the singles “Funhouse” and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody.” They invented a dance, the Funky Charleston, and had their own movie franchise — the “House Party” movies, two of which featured Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell, who went on to star in the TV sitcom “Martin.” They even had a Saturday morning cartoon, “Kid ‘N Play,” with an accompanying Marvel comic series.

In 2010, they appeared as themselves in an Adult Swim special called “Freaknik: The Musical.” In 2013, they returned to the “House Party” franchise after sitting out the fourth film in the series. A year later, they turned up in RadioShack’s "The 80s called" Super Bowl commercial.

This Compton rapper is best known for the triple-platinum Grammy-winning single "Gangsta's Paradise," built on a sample of the Stevie Wonder classic "Pastime Paradise." His other hits include the double-platinum "Fantastic Voyage," "Too Hot," "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)," "It's All the Way Live (Now)" and "C U When U Get There." He also rapped the theme songs for the late-‘90s Nickelodeon series, “Kenan & Kel.”

In 2008, the MuchMore network premiered a reality show titled “Coolio’s Rules,” which followed his life as entrepreneurial caterer looking for love while raising four kids on his own. It ran one season, followed a web-based spinoff called “Cookin’ With Coolio,” on which he has been known to refer to himself as “ghetto Martha Stewart” and “the black Rachael Ray.” He has published a cookbook and appeared in 2012 on the Food Network reality series “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off,” placing second behind Lou Diamond Phillips. A year later, he turned up on ABC’s “Wife Swap.” His latest album, “From the Bottom 2 the Top,” was released in 2009.

“Loc-ed After Dark,” this L.A. rapper’s first release, went double platinum, topping Billboard’s album chart and spinning off two giant pop hits, the double-platinum “Wild Thing” and the platinum “Funky Cold Medina.” That was all it took to earn him a well-deserved Favorite New Dance Artist at 1990’s American Music Awards. He also earned a Best New Artist nomination at the Grammys but was robbed of the title when Milli Vanilli picked up the award they would later be forced to return when it was brought to light that they’re not really on their own damn album.

In 2003, he was a guest on Fefe Dobson’s "Rock It 'Til You Drop It" song. He’s also done voiceover work, including “Titan A.E.” and this year’s “Zootopia” and appeared as himself in the ‘80s spoof, “Totally Awesome.”

This English-born rapper is best known for the 1989 hit “Bust a Move,” an all-time hip-hop classic that hit No. 7 on the Hot 100. “Bust a Move” was featured on his debut album, “Stone Cold Rhymin’,” which had a second big crossover single in “Principal’s Office.” “Bust a Move” picked up a well-deserved Grammy for Best Rap Performance and was named the 47th greatest hip-hop song of all time in a VH1 poll.

In 2002, he released his sixth album, “Engage the Enzyme,” and appeared as a contestant on “Weakest Link — Rap Stars Edition,” which he won, of course, because he’s really smart. In 2003, he was cast in a VH1 reality show called “Celebrity Fit Club 3,” winning again. He moved to Scottsdale in 2007 and turned up two years later in the Jason Reitman film “Up in the Air,” memorably rapping “Bust a Move” at a software convention. His latest album, “Relentless,” hit the street in 2008.

See the full list of past total solar eclipses in the U.S. since 1778

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 4:36 AM EDT / CBS News

A  rare total solar eclipse was visible in parts of the United States Monday. Those in the path of totality  had the opportunity to see the sun be fully covered by the moon for several minutes.

Total solar eclipses are rare , and aren't often visible from the U.S. The last time one occurred here  was in 2017 , and the U.S. won't see another until 2044 .

Here's a list of all the times a total solar eclipse has been recorded in the United States.

Total solar eclipse in the U.S. during the 18th century

The first recorded total solar eclipse was in 1778, according to NASA , just a few short years after the United States became an independent country. The eclipse was visible from the Carolinas to New England, and was noted by historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, according to Mount Vernon , the museum established in former President George Washington's estate. Troops in Washington's army also noted the event.

A total eclipse of the sun

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 19th century

1806: The first total solar eclipse of the 1800s occurred in 1806, according to the National Parks Service . The path of that eclipse would have crossed from Arizona, through the Midwest and into New England, according to NASA .

1869: The next total solar eclipse was recorded in 1869. The path of totality stretched from Alaska to the Carolinas, according to NASA . Photos of the event were published in Harper's Magazine, the service said, the first mass publication to do so.

1878: The next total solar eclipse occurred in 1878, and the path of totality arced from Alaska through Louisiana, according to NASA . It was studied by an all-woman team of astronomers, according to the parks service, and Thomas Edison himself traveled to see the event, bringing scientific equipment to study the sun's corona during the eclipse.

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 20th century

1900: The first eclipse of the 20th century was in 1900, according to the parks service. The path of totality of that eclipse brought it over Wadesboro, North Carolina.

1918: In June 1918, a total solar eclipse was visible from Washington to Florida, according to the parks service. It was the last time a total solar eclipse would be visible across the entire continent for nearly 100 years.

1925: This was followed by another total solar eclipse in January 1925, which was visible from Minnesota through New England, according to NASA .

1932: In August 1932, another total solar eclipse was visible in North America. The path of totality for this eclipse was mostly in Canada, according to NASA , but was visible in northern New England including parts of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

1963: The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. wasn't until July 1963. This eclipse was visible in Alaska and parts of northern New England, according to NASA .

1970: In March 1970, another total solar eclipse was visible from the coast of the Southwest United States. Watch CBS News coverage of that event in the video below:

1979: The last eclipse that NASA recorded in the 20th century took place in 1979. This eclipse was visible in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Idaho and the Dakotas, but the path of totality mostly arced through Canada.

Total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 21st century so far

Only two total solar eclipses have been visible from the United States during the 21st century. The first was the total solar eclipse of 2017 , which was visible across the country . This was the first time such an event had occurred since 1918, and millions gathered to watch .

The April 8, 2024, eclipse was the next total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. The path of totality for this eclipse stretched from Texas to the Northeast. The eclipse started  on Mexico's Pacific coast at just after 11 a.m. PDT before traveling across the U.S. and into Canada. The eclipse left North America around 5:19 p.m. EDT.

Eclipse map of totality

The eclipse attracted millions of spectators. Some areas where the event was most visible declared local states of emergency to account for the number of expected visitors.

When will the next total solar eclipse be visible in the U.S.?

After the April 8 eclipse, the U.S. won't see another total solar eclipse for decades. The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States will occur in August 2044.

Total solar eclipses typically happen every one to three years somewhere around the globe, but the events are often only visible from Earth's poles or from the middle of the ocean.

Scooter kicked off the mammoth tour in Germany last month, with it continuing through Europe until the group arrive on UK shores in October and November.

H. P. Baxxter of Scooter performing on stage in Munich.

The four-piece formed in 1993 and has sold a whopping 30 million records to date, earning more than 80 gold and platinum music awards/

They have landed 23 top ten hits, and are considered the most commercially successful German single-record act.

Scooter have produced several well-known singles across the world, including Hyper Hyper, How Much Is the Fish?, Maria, Jumping Over The World, and The Question Is What Is the Question?.

They released The Logical Song in 2001, which became the band’s highest-charting single of their career and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

It was the 15th best-selling single of 2002 and was one of the anthems synonymous with rave culture in the 2000s.

Scooter’s music – especially their wacky lyrics that have experienced plenty of praise on TikTok – as well as their wild outfits, Baxxter’s luminous bleach blonde hair, and pyrotechnic-filled performances have seen them become household names across the globe.

Speaking to City Magazine in 2019, vocalist Baxxter reflected on the impact Scooter have had on the electronic music industry.

‘I’ve always loved bands with strong stage presence. When I was a teenager listening to hard rock, I loved Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, who destroyed his guitar at every concert.

‘Even then, I knew it was a staged part of the show, but that didn’t diminish the excitement I felt when he smashed it. When I think about the pyrotechnics we used on the first tours, compared to today’s explosive shows, I just smile.’

Speaking about their legendary live shows, he continued: ‘At one point we were spending more on pyrotechnics than we could make in tickets, but we could afford it because the shows were selling massive amounts of records.

‘Every single we put out went gold or platinum, and then all of a sudden, albums started selling. Of course, this has completely changed, but fortunately, pyrotechnics have also become cheaper and we don’t have to dwell on it.’

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

From there, the show was all joy and catharsis, with an unbroken string of hits and live favorites, beginning with Nils Lofgren’s jaw-dropping guitar virtuosity on “Because the Night,” and inevitably reaching “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.” As he has throughout the tour, Springsteen finished the show alone with his meditation on life after death, “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play another Forum show on Sunday.
