Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft

Graphite Design is a company that should not be overlooked if you are in the market for a new shaft for your driver or woods.

While the company doesn’t have the market share that companies like Aldila and Mitsubishi do, their shafts are steadily gaining in popularity.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is a perfect example of why their shafts are gaining more attention.

This is a shaft that is said to deliver high launch and low spin – a great combination for moderate swing speeds players. So does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ deliver? Let’s find out.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Overview

We’re not huge fans of the orange and matte black color scheme of this shaft. The colors make it look like this is a Halloween-themed shaft.

But once we got past the looks, we were treated with a very fluid feel. “Fluid” is the best adjective to describe the activity of the shaft.

There is a very subtle kick. In fact, unless you really load up on it, it’s easy to miss any distinct kick point.

Instead, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ flexes smoothly and easily transfers energy down the shaft and into the ball. The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was built to have a softer midsection than the butt.

And unless you opt for the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ in its lightest weight class (40g), the tip section is very stiff.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 4 has a soft tip section. Overall, this isn’t your typical graphite shaft.

It just doesn’t feel exactly like a graphite shaft. But that wasn’t a bad thing for our testers. After a few swings, they grew to enjoy the unique feel of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ.

Why is the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ So Popular?

It should be noted that the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ comes in a variety of weights and flexes.

This is one of the things that makes it so popular: there is a version of this shaft for pretty much every kind of golfer.

How Does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Perform?

So does the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ live up to the promise of high launch and low spin? Yes and no.

The launch angles were really good. They fluctuated between 14 and 15 degrees. More importantly, it was very easy to achieve those launch angles. However, we were expecting lower spin rates.

During our testing, we couldn’t work the spin rates lower than 2100 RPMs.

This isn’t terribly high spin for a graphite shaft, but so much had been made about how muted the spin of this shaft was that we were a bit let down.

Still, this allowed for better workability. Our better testers were able to affect draws and fades and attack doglegs strategically.

Plus, the mid spin rates made it easier to control rollout. Distance was not a problem. After three swings, our testers were averaging a carry distance of 261.5 yards.

This was very impressive considering that our testing party consists of moderate and fast swingers. The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was also pleasingly consistent.

On all but severe mis-hits, we were getting tight shot dispersion. In fact, our offline divergence never crept into double digits (yards).

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Lite/senior stiff is for anyone swinging their driver slower than 70 MPH.

Regular, stiff and stiff/regular would be a good choice for swing speeds in the 75-85 MPH range. Stiff and extra stiff are for 86-95 MPH swingers. Tour extra stiff is for 95+ MPH swingers.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The 40g weight class is for sub 70 MPH swingers.

The 50g class is for 75-85 MPH swingers. The 60g class is for 86-90 MPH swingers. The 70g class is for 91-100 MPH swing speed players. The 80g class is for 100+ MPH swingers.

Why is it So Good?

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft1

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is a good shaft because it doesn’t waste an iota of your swing speed.

You can feel it working but it never feels “jerky” or out of control. Instead, you get a smooth transition of energy from the butt to the club head.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ First Impressions

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft2

Our first impression of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ was that it had a very unique feel.

After testing dozens of graphite wood shafts, you sort of get tunnel-visioned. You think that all graphite shafts are supposed to feel a certain way.

But the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ has a more controlled feel than most graphite shafts.

Key Features & Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ utilizes a carbon fiber prepreg in the stiff section to enhance stability.

In terms of performance, this feature makes the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ incredibly consistent.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Driver Review

Out of the box, we had the ability to work the ball or shoot it more or less straight.

It’s a great shaft to keep you on the fairway or aggressively attack doglegs.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Fairway Wood Review

With our woods, we were comfortable able to avoid hitting the ball too thick. It maintained its fluid feel off the deck.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Pros & Cons

  • Tight dispersion
  • Easy to get the hang of
  • Many weight classes
  • Mediocre spin rates

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft produces high launch and low spin with a unique feel.

Introduction

Graphite Design is a no-nonsense company.  Every year, they release one or two new shafts with relatively modest fanfare (we reviewed the excellent Tour AD TP earlier this year).  If you need giant social media campaigns, there are shaft companies that give you that.  If you just want solid performance, check out GD.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

Appropriate for this time of year, the Graphite Design AD IZ sports an orange and matte black color scheme .  This look is the inverse of one of their most successful models, the Tour AD DI .

Graphically, Graphite Design always plays it straight: simple branding below the handle with a shift in the base color.  This is an all-business look for the serious player, and it’s immediately recognizable as Graphite Design.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

On paper, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is similar to the Tour AD DI .  The company’s website  describes the AD IZ as being Firm+ in the tip, Medium in the middle, and Firm in the butt.  The AD DI has the same Medium mid section, but the tip is Stiff (half a notch firmer than the AD IZ) and the butt is Medium (a whole notch softer).

That similarity transfers over to the real world.  The tip is extremely stable in both shafts.

What’s different is that the AD IZ doesn’t kick the way the AD DI does; it feels like the energy flows from the handle to the club head .  This is slightly unusual – it’s more common for a shaft to have that distinct bend point – but it’s a great feel once you get used to it.

Performance

What struck me during my testing of the Tour AD IZ was the consistency .  In my first few swings, I struggled with the feel simply because it’s different than what I’ve been gaming.  However, that smooth, whip-crack feel was the same swing after swing, so I was able to get locked in with it quickly.

Once I was dialed in, I saw exactly the ball flight that Graphite Design describes: high launch and low spin .  With the stable tip, I was able to swing hard without a fear of “losing” the shaft.  On the other hand, the feel was so smooth that I could swing easily and still feel it working.  Whether swinging hard or soft, I was able to control the ball flight and maintain near-optimal distance.

The Tour AD IZ is available in a wide range of weights and flexes .  The lightest is 40 grams, available in Lite/Senior and Regular flex.  It’s also important to note that the 40 gram version has a very different profile – a soft tip with medium mid and butt sections.  Every flex from Senior to X is available at 50 grams, with the 50-X being a first for Graphite Design.  The 60 gram model has Regular, Stiff, and X versions.  Only big swingers – Stiff and X – need apply for the 70 or 80 gram models.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

The Tour AD IZ enhances the Graphite Design line-up by adding a unique feel that still has the consistency that players of all levels want.  If you’re looking to get your drives “Into the Zone” of high launch and low spin, the AD IZ is definitely worth a look.

I had a GD Purple Ice in a driver and felt it was the best shaft I’ve ever used. Great kick at the correct point and consistent ball flight. Tried a GD YS 6 afterward and it was not satisfying. This sounds similar in feel, so I’d be game to try it.

' src=

Just got the iz 6x , I have played a Mitsubishi blue board 62 stiff in my last 5 drivers. Never really believed a shaft could add a noticeable amount of distance. This one is an easy 10 to 15 yards farther and accurate. I did not get fitted but I borrowed 5 different shafts and just liked the feel of this one. It’s still the player and the swing, but when I swing easy, man it goes. Tp 7 handicap

' src=

Tour AD IZ vs DI for Driver and 3 wood? Swing speed is close to yours.

' src=

If you’re asking which I would play, I’d choose the DI. If you’re asking for a recommendation for yourself, I would say to go work with a fitter.

' src=

What is the loft of your driver you tested with Tour AD IZ?

9 degree PING G400.

' src=

Hi Matt, Why would you choose the DI over the IZ? Feel or just better performance?

The two are connected. The feel of the DI is more comfortable for me, so it performs a bit more consistently. Or perhaps more accurately, I perform more consistently with it.

' src=

I’m in the process of researching shafts to put into my new 3 wood. How would compare the IZ to the Atmos Red Tour Spec in terms of feel and performance?

I have a full review of the ATMOS Tour Spec line here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-atmos-shaft-review/

' src=

Did you tip the shaft at all? In the past I have been an DI 7x, and 8x tipped more. I’m looking for a little more stability with less work. Would the IZ be a perfect in-between going in the 6tx and 7tx

I did not tip it, installed it straight in.

' src=

I’m playing the AD IZ5 X at 46″ in a Mizuno driver and think it’s the best shaft I’ve hit in a long time. It is very accurate, consistent, long, and great feeling. A real winner!

' src=

Im getting fitted for a new driver next week. His previous recommendation for my previous driver was the Tour AD MJ but I will try out the DI this time out. Unfortunately they do not the new IZ available for testing. If the DI is recommended how do I go about choosing between the DI and the IZ as they both have similar characteristics?

I’m not trying to be funny or rude, but if the DI is recommended by your fitter, get the DI. Don’t overthink it.

' src=

Matt, does this feel and launch similar to the PX Evenflow black? Thanks…Ed

In my opinion, the EvenFlow Black has a feel that’s substantially different than the AD IZ. Launch will depend on how the individual mixes with each shaft.

Which of the two shafts you would choose to play in a 2 sim dhy iron (more pentrating flight and low spin) and 4 sim dhy iron (higher flight and more mid spin?)

What two shafts am I choosing between?

sorry the text was incomplete. I am not able to have a fitting in the country i live and i would like suggestion which shaft you would reccomend between AD DI and AD IZ to play with the SIM DHY #2 and #4 irons. I currently play AD DI 65 grams Stiff regular in the driver and TGI 80 stiff in the irons. Thank you!

I have only tested the AD IZ hybrid shaft. I would suggest that if you’re comfortable with the IZ in your driver, try that in your hybrids, too.

' src=

You answer are never to the point you should test more . Or don’t answer.

' src=

Angelo Morgan you illiterate Muppet. You should beat it with that idiotic comment.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have a tendency to over draw the driver. I’m currently using the GD Tour AD DI 7 Stiff in my Driver. Do you think the GD Tour AD IZ 7 Stiff would help straighten out the drives? Or would you have a recommendation to try? Barry.

It’s possible, but not a guarantee. I always recommend getting a fitting rather than buy-and-try because you’ll get to see the results before you spend the money.

' src=

Hello is this the closest to the YS in the Tour AD range? Thank you and stay safe

I don’t have enough experience with the YS to say for certain.

' src=

Hi Matt, looking to pair up a woods shaft to my irons modus 120s – would the IZ be a good match in terms of feel? Cheers

That combo might work for you, but I wouldn’t say those two shafts are similar in feel to me.

REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ Shaft

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

The new Tour AD IZ utilizes the same TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology as the Tour AD TP shaft released early in 2017. This provides the tip section of the shaft with additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control. Along with TORAYCA ® and NANOALLOY ® is Graphite Design’s proprietary Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) design philosophy and technology. This means each material is used in construction to maximize the benefits of every shaft.   While I went with the 60 S flex, there are many different weights and flexes available in this shaft rarely seen before: The Tour AD IZ shafts are available in 40g  R2, R1 and  S flex ;  50g R2, R1 and S flex;  50 gram X Flex , (for the first time); 60g SR, S and X flex; 70g S and X flex and 80g S and X flex.

The new  Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft has a firm stiffness starting at the handle, and medium center section and a firm+ tip profile to promote a high launch angle and low ball spin rates. Testing was done with a Mizuno JPX 850 driver set at 8.5* of loft and 45 inches total playing length. Numbers used for the testing were gathered indoors on two separate sessions and the golf ball used was a Bridgestone B330. The Tour AD IZ shaft produced the best results I have ever recorded in shaft testing. Outdoors I noticed right away a ball flight that didn’t waver. I was also impressed with the feel.

I’ve never hit a  Graphite Design shaft that didn’t feel great, but the Tour AD IZ was smooth in the swing and solid at impact. We are almost done with 2017, but Graphite Design has launched what I see as the shaft to get in 2018.

Detailed analysis of the shaft’s design, performance evaluation of the tour ad iz shaft, comparing the tour ad iz shaft to other shafts, user experience and feedback.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 6 Shaft for Callaway MAVRIK/Epic Flash Drivers (Choose Flex) Stiff

The design of the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft is the result of extensive research and development, with a focus on maximizing performance. Let’s explore two key design aspects that set this shaft apart from the competition.

Material and Construction

The Tour AD IZ Shaft is constructed from high-quality carbon fiber, known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. This material allows for precise tuning of the shaft’s characteristics, ensuring optimal performance for different swing speeds and styles.

Carbon fiber is a popular choice in the golf industry due to its unique properties. It is incredibly lightweight, which helps golfers generate more clubhead speed and distance. The strength of carbon fiber also allows for a stiffer shaft, providing better control and accuracy.

Additionally, the use of advanced materials enhances the shaft’s stability, reducing unwanted vibrations for a smoother feel at impact. This stability is crucial for maintaining consistency in the golfer’s swing, resulting in more accurate shots.

Aesthetics and Feel

Graphite Design has paid meticulous attention to the aesthetics of the Tour AD IZ Shaft, combining a sleek matte finish with subtle branding elements. This visually appealing design is not only pleasing to the eye but also serves a functional purpose.

The matte finish reduces glare from the sun, allowing golfers to focus on their swing without distractions. The subtle branding elements add a touch of sophistication, elevating the overall look of the shaft.

However, aesthetics are not the only consideration when it comes to the Tour AD IZ Shaft. The shaft’s feel is equally important, as it directly affects a golfer’s confidence and control throughout their swing.

The Tour AD IZ Shaft offers an exceptionally balanced feel, which is crucial for consistent performance. This balance allows golfers to maintain control over the clubhead, resulting in more accurate and repeatable swings.

Furthermore, the shaft’s responsive feedback allows players to make subtle adjustments and fine-tune their performance on the golf course. This adaptability is especially beneficial for golfers who prefer to tweak their swing to suit different course conditions or shot requirements.

Performance is the ultimate measure of a golf shaft’s effectiveness. In this section, we will assess the Tour AD IZ Shaft’s performance in two crucial aspects: distance and speed, as well as accuracy and control.

When it comes to distance and speed, the Tour AD IZ Shaft truly stands out from the competition. Its innovative design and advanced materials work together to deliver impressive results. The optimized flex profile and torque allow for efficient energy transfer, resulting in increased clubhead speed and greater distance off the tee.

Imagine standing on the first tee, ready to unleash your power. With the Tour AD IZ Shaft, you can confidently swing with all your might, knowing that this shaft has the potential to unlock your full power potential. Whether you’re a power player looking to maximize your distance or someone looking to add more yards to your game, this shaft is a game-changer.

But distance is not the only factor that matters in golf. Accuracy and control are equally crucial. The Tour AD IZ Shaft excels in this aspect as well. Its stability and predictable performance ensure that shots are delivered consistently, even under pressure.

Picture yourself on a tight fairway, needing to hit a precise shot to avoid hazards and reach the green. With the Tour AD IZ Shaft, you can trust its precise engineering to minimize the dispersion of shots. This means that you can hit your intended target with confidence and precision, giving you an edge over your competitors.

Whether you’re a professional golfer striving for perfection or an amateur looking to improve your game, the Tour AD IZ Shaft is a reliable and high-performing option. Its combination of distance, speed, accuracy, and control make it a top choice for golfers of all skill levels.

When evaluating a golf shaft, it is essential to consider how it stacks up against the competition. In this section, we will compare the Tour AD IZ Shaft to other Graphite Design models, as well as competitor shafts like the Matrix Ozik .

Tour AD IZ vs. Other Graphite Design Shafts

Graphite Design offers a range of shafts suitable for different player profiles. While the Tour AD IZ Shaft shares certain characteristics with other models like the Grafalloy ProLaunch , such as stability and feel, its design and performance focus set it apart from its counterparts. Players seeking a balance between power and control may find the Tour AD IZ Shaft to be the ideal option.

Tour AD IZ vs. Competitor Shafts

Competition within the golf shaft industry is fierce, with several well-established brands vying for the top spot. The Tour AD IZ Shaft has managed to carve out a niche for itself by delivering exceptional performance across multiple metrics. When compared to competitor shafts, it consistently ranks among the best in terms of distance, accuracy, and overall playability.

Golfers’ experiences and feedback provide valuable insights into a golf shaft’s real-world performance. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the Tour AD IZ Shaft, as reported by users.

Pros and Cons According to Users

Users of the Tour AD IZ Shaft praise its exceptional stability and consistent performance. They note that the shaft’s ability to reduce unwanted vibrations enhances the overall feel of their shots. Additionally, golfers report noticeable improvements in their distance and accuracy after switching to the Tour AD IZ Shaft.

However, some users mention that the shaft’s premium pricing may be a deterrent for some golfers. Furthermore, individuals with slower swing speeds might find the shaft’s firm profile challenging to handle.

Who is it Best Suited For?

The Tour AD IZ Shaft is best suited for golfers seeking a premium shaft that excels in both power and control. Players with faster swing speeds will particularly benefit from the Tour AD IZ Shaft’s ability to generate impressive distance and maintain accuracy. However, individuals with slower swing speeds may need to consider whether the shaft’s firm profile aligns with their playing style and preferences.

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft lives up to its reputation as a performance powerhouse, offering golfers a winning combination of power, accuracy, and control. With its cutting-edge design, premium materials, and exceptional stability, the Tour AD IZ Shaft has solidified its place among the best golf shaft options on the market. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a dedicated amateur, this shaft has the potential to elevate your game to new heights.

Our take on Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shafts

Director of Original Content Johnny Wunder on the Tour AD IZ shafts: Shaft tested GD Tour AD IZ 7TX in Cobra F9 Speedback 8 degrees at 45 inches.

The IZ shaft is one that actually snuck up on me a bit. In my experience with Graphite Design shafts, I have always had trouble finding one that was stable enough to satisfy the days my swing wasn’t on point. What I mean by that is that these shafts have always been low-spin heaters for me. Solid ball speeds, good carry, low spin, good flight windows, etc. What I found, though, was when they got off track for me, they really got off track.

The IZ for me changed that for me on two levels.

  • My dispersion was REALLY tight, while my spin went up and ball speed went up.
  • Carry distance was down by about five yards, which is no big deal, but overall it was a total flip from prior experiences. Mishits seem to hold their line as well while not losing too much yardage which is a combo of shaft and head.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

From a feel perspective, the IZ has a smooth non-boardy profile, and I didn’t feel like I was having to work that hard to find the middle of the face, which for “sweet spotting” is a BIG factor in landing on shafts for me. If I was to game one, I’d probably mess with the tipping a bit, and perhaps go to a 60 TX. but overall it’s definitely in consideration for the summertime gamer.

Graphite Design has always made quality components, and with this offering, I think they have a shaft that could be a good way in for people who stayed away from these shafts for whatever reason. If I was going to give comps from what I feel, I’d say Tensei CK Pro Blue, Accra TZ5, and Fujikura Ventus..so basically the cream of the crop, in my opinion.

Tony Finau has always been known as one of the longest players on the PGA Tour, but he has recently been working on adding a little more distance. Last year, Finau averaged 118.3 mph club head speed and 178.08 mph ball speed, all while playing a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 70 TX driver shaft. This year, he has increased his club head speed to 123.93 mph and his ball speed to 183.32 mph.

However, Finau’s overall distance has decreased by two yards in that time. From a fitting perspective, something was amiss. We asked Tony about the shaft change at the Texas Children’s Hospital Open.

“[I’m seeing] better numbers with the spin. My driver’s been a little high spin for me over the last month or so, and so I just figured it was time to probably check out the equipment,” Finau said. “And it definitely showed me that I was using a shaft that’s maybe a little too tip-stiff for me, the way I load the club now. [I’m seeing] better numbers with the spin.”

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

Finau switched from the Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 70 TX into the Diamana GT 70 TX. The newer Diamana GT has a slightly different profile than the D+ Limited with the stiffest handle section in the Diamana lineup. The mid sections between the two are similar stiffness but the tip is just slightly stiffer in the Diamana GT. Both shafts are within one gram of each other in the 70 TX. The torque rating on the GT is 0.1 higher than the D+Limited’s 2.7 measurement.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

Mitsubishi lists the Diamana GT as a shaft between the mid-launching Diamana TB and the new low-launch Diamana WB shafts. For most players, it would be considered a mid/low launch and low-spin shaft option. Mitsubishi’s Xlink Tech Resin System makes sure the maximum carbon fiber content is there for smooth feel without reducing the strength of the shaft. MR70 carbon fiber is used for reinforcing the shaft and boron is used in the tip for its high strength and compression properties.

Finau is still using his trusty Ping G430 LST driver in 9 degrees and has the adjustable hosel set to -1 degree of loft (standard lie angle). Finau’s long-time favorite Lamkin UTX Green grip is installed. He definitely has a few extra wraps of tape under that grip as you can see the bulge down where the grip meets the shaft.

One final note: Per Ping’s PGA Tour rep Kenton Oates, Finau’s driver is also adjusted to play one degree upright to help dial in his desired launch.

We’ll see how he fares with the new setup this week in Houston!

Shaft Review – Graphite Design Tour AD XC

Invariably, when we talk about additions to Graphite Design’s flagship Tour AD shaft lineup, we have to cover both what the shaft is and what it isn’t.

As far as what the Tour AD XC is :  it’s a modernization of the company’s popular Tour AD BB offering. Given that Graphite Design launched the AD BB all the way back in 2012, it seems reasonable, if not logical, that the XC would replace the BB entirely.

A replacement, however, is exactly what the AD XC isn’t.

Despite being a little long in the tooth by golf equipment standards, the seven (and counting) -year-old shaft remains popular with fitters. So much so that the AD BB is the No. 4 selling shaft in the Graphite Design lineup. When fitters (a shaft manufacturer’s primary customers) are comfortable with a shaft, trust a shaft, and are selling quite a few of them, it’s not the best business move to take something away from them, especially when it’s just as easy to give them another option.

A Modernized Tour AD BB

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

Graphite Design describes the Tour AD XC as a modernized Tour AD BB. That description implies that XC is less about reinventing and more about incorporating material advancements into a good product to make it better. In this case, the biggest upgrade is the inclusion of TORAYCA M40X carbon fiber pre-preg in the mid through tip section of the shaft. At the risk of wading too deep into the shaft material weeds, the selling point for M40X is that it offers both high modulus and high-tensile strength. Something like T1100G, for example, has exceptionally high-tensile strength but low- to moderate-tensile modulus. M40X is a bit of a best of both worlds’ solution.

Ultimately, material stories boil down to strength vs. weight. In the case of the AD XC, M40X allowed Graphite Design to make a shaft that’s stronger and still shave a few grams of weight. Because of the strength of the M40X material, fewer plies are needed which should eliminate what golfers often describe as a “boardy” feel. The tip section is reinforced with T1100g to provide the low- mid-spin characteristics. The combination of materials along with the bend profile provides what Graphite Design describes a shaft that’s easier to load and transfers more energy to the ball.

While speed is almost invariably a part of every golf equipment story, the company says golfers report tighter dispersion as well. As always, your mileage may vary.

Tour AD XC Lineup

The Graphite Design Tour AD XC is available in a wide range of weights and flexes. That includes everything from a 47-gram model in R2 flex (Lite/Senior) to an 85-gram X-Stiff version. In addition to the sub-50g offering, the XC is also available in a 58-gram X-Flex and what Graphite Design labels Tour X-Stiff in 67.g and 76.5-gram versions. The Tour X is intended for golfers who swing above 110 miles an hour. Its inclusion in the lineup speaks to the increase in clubhead speed among professional and elite amateur golfers.

In case you missed it, check out our story  detailing why we believe S3 provides the best insights into shaft performance.

“S3 Technologies utilizes the most advanced shaft testing technology in the industry. The Shaft Simulation System (S3), which was developed in 2013, is a fully automated, all-in-one shaft profiling machine. In a matter of minutes, the S3 determines the following shaft specs: Straightness, Consistency Profile, EI Profile, CPM Analysis, and Torque. While some of the aforementioned specs can be obtained from shaft manufacturers, a lack of industry standards prevents that data from being used for accurate apples-to-apples comparisons. S3 Technologies solves this challenge by testing all of our products in-house using the S3. This gives S3 Technologies a unique and in-depth understanding of the quality and performance of the industry’s shafts.”

Not only does Cools Clubs S3 system give us standardized quantitative information about the shaft(s) being reviewed, the data we share will provide you with a much better sense of how those shafts compare with similarly spec’d offerings on the market today.

Using S3 data, we’ll be providing a comparison of the Graphite Design Tour AD XC to the AD BB and AD IZ. Comparisons are based on stiff flex shafts in the 60-gram range. Because measurement tools vary across the shaft industry, the S3 numbers may not align with data published by the manufacturer. By using S3 values, we are able to standardize values across all of our shaft reviews.

Launch Characteristics

As a quick refresher, the gray line extended to the edge of the graphic depicts what’s defined as a neutral shaft in the Cool Clubs S3 database. In simple terms, it can be thought of as the true definition of mid-launch.

As you can see, the XC and BB straddle our neutral line. By comparison, the AD IZ, which can be thought of as a modernized AD DI, offers appreciably higher launch. Both the AD BB and XC should be considered mid-launch profiles. However, with the T1100 reinforced tip, the XC is expected to provide mid-low spin.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

The EI chart speaks to the similarity in Graphite Design offerings. The comparatively soft midsection, as evidenced by the sloping shape of the profile, is a signature of the Graphite Design engineering philosophy.

As you can see, within the S3 system, the XC is characterized by an ever-so-slightly stiffer handle and tip sections, relative to the AD BB. This suggests a shaft that is overall just a bit stiffer than the BB. While the AD IZ is a bit stiffer in the handle section, the softer tip provides a higher launch.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

The zone stiffness breakdown is a bit like zooming in on sections of the previous chart. What’s notable here is that despite variations in butt and tip EI, the mid-sections of all three shafts offer virtually identical stiffness. As previously mentioned, you’ll find this true for many of Graphite Design’s offerings. The most significant differences in the profiles are found at either end of the shaft.

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

One of the most significant differences between made for/stock OEM and aftermarket shafts is found in the torque numbers. Many aftermarket offerings, like the AD XC, are billed as low torque, which means the tip section of the shaft is more resistant to twisting than a higher torque alternative. As with other fitting variables, lower torque isn’t inherently better. Higher torque works for some golfers, while low torque is beneficial to others – particularly more aggressive swingers.

With torque values below 3, all of the shafts included in our comparison can be considered low torque. Torsional stiffness can play a role in accuracy, which could partially explain why Graphite Design reports tighter dispersion with the XC.

In line with the general theme of this story, the XC has evolved slightly from the AD BB, but the change in torque is far from massive.

Balance Point

tour ad iz 6 shaft weight

With the AD XC, Graphite Design has shifted the balance point slightly towards the tip section of the shaft. Bottom line, it’s not what we would describe as a counter-balanced offering. It’s likely better suited to golfers who prefer a heavier swing weight or, I suppose you could say, like to feel the head during the swing.

As you may recall from our  Golf Geeks Story on Shaft Performance , a higher balance point allows for more head weight without drastically impacting the swingweight. For golfers seeking more distance (admittedly often at the expense of accuracy), this allows drivers to be built to longer playing lengths.

From the Cool Clubs Fitting Team

Graphite Design has introduced its new Tour AD model for 2020, called the XC, which stands for X tra C arry. The XC shaft is offered in five different weight classes: 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80. Flexes range from R1 to TX. We will focus on the XC 60 S model and compare it to the Tour AD BB-6 S and Tour AD IZ-6S.

While lighter in weight and softer in overall frequency than both the Tour AD BB-6 S and the Tour AD IZ-6 S, the Tour AD XC-6 S still launches lower. This lighter weight and slight softness in the Tour AD XC-6 S can help some players load the club more efficiently. With the various materials Graphite Design has used in the Tour AD XC-6 shaft, including M40X and T1100 carbon fiber pre-preg, players may feel like the shaft is more stable and that they’re able to control ball flight nicely. It’s a great option for those who want a mid-launch/mid-low spin shaft in the lower end of the 60- to 70-gram weight range.

Similar Shafts

As we’ve said, Graphite Design’s offerings tend to be more alike than different. When looking for similar shafts in the S3 database, these are the shafts we identified as most similar to the AD XC.

  • Graphite Design Tour AD BB-6 (see above)
  • Graphite Design Tour AD GT-6 (stiffer butt section, softer tip, slightly lower torque)

Tour AD XC Pricing and Availability

The Graphite Design Tour AD XC shaft is available through custom club fitters and other authorized Graphite Design resellers. MSRP is $500 though your actual street price should be a bit under $400.

Hi Tony, in the Graphite Design website, they suggested X-shaft for >105 mph driver swing speed, but you mentioned 110 mph for X-stiff Shaft. I am around 105-108mph swing speed changed from BB 6S to XC 6S, wondering I should switch to 6 X-stiff XC to improve dispersion and distance. Any thoughts?

The AD XC 6S shaft was what Club Champion fit me into. +13 yards carry over my current driver (same head was used). Not only that, my 10 y fade is now a 5y fade with much tighter dispersion. The feel of the shaft at impact is a new experience for me. I am not sure I can afford to put this in all my woods and hybrids, but it is going in my driver, that is for sure. One full club closer to the hole on 14 holes per round and 50% more likely to be in the fairway for only $400? Over the years, this will be just pennies per hit–as Tony would say–“yes, please”.

Does a good shaft maker for s and x flex hitters really mean much for us who are reg and senior? Does any shaft mfgr specialize in shafts for us? I swing reg flex (Recoil F3) in irons but I can’t swing with control a full length driver as well, and straddle reg and senior flex on 43 inch or longer..

Graphite Design makes the best shaft on the market in my opinion. I have the IZ-7x and its interesting reading the comparisons between the new XC and the BB. Now that I have had a Tour AD shaft, I might never go back (of course unless a fitter or data shows me otherwise). Great stuff, Tony.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI vs IZ: Which Shaft Wins?

Golfers are always on the lookout for equipment that can give them an edge on the course, and choosing the right shaft can make a big difference in their game. Two popular options on the market are the Graphite Design Tour AD DI and the Tour AD IZ shafts.

The main things that set apart the AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts are weight ranges, torque ratings, and kickpoints. Tour AD DI is heavier with higher torque, resulting in mid-to-high kickpoint and ball flight. Where the Tour AD IZ has wider weight range, lower torque, and mid kickpoint, giving a mid-launch trajectory.

In this Tour AD DI vs IZ guide, we’ll take a closer look at these two shafts and help you determine which one might be the best fit for your game.

Tour AD DI vs iZ: What are the differences?

Graphite Design Tour AD DI vs IZ

Here’s a comparison table to give you an at-a-glance understanding of the differences and similarities between the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts.

Now, let’s dive deeper into the comparison between the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts in a more conversational tone.

Both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts are made with the same top-notch aerospace-grade carbon fiber materials. They’re lightweight, strong, and really durable.

Graphite Design, the company behind these shafts, also uses its special Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) technology to give these shafts their unique performance characteristics.

When it comes to flex, both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts have got you covered. They offer a wide range of flex options such as R2 (Senior), R1 (Regular), SR (Stiff Regular), S (Stiff), and X (Extra Stiff).

So, whatever your swing speed or playing style, there’s likely a flex option that’s perfect for you.

Now, this is where things get interesting. The Tour AD DI shafts have a weight range of 50 to 80 grams, depending on the flex you choose. On the other hand, the Tour AD IZ shafts weigh between 40 and 85 grams.

That difference in weight might not seem like much, but it can really affect the swing weight and feel of your golf club.

When it comes to length, both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts are available in the standard lengths you’d expect for drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids.

If you’re looking for something a little more customized, you might be able to get a custom length upon request.

If you’re wondering about torque, Tour AD DI shafts have a torque rating that ranges from 4.5 to 6.6 degrees.

The Tour AD IZ shafts, on the other hand, have a torque rating between 3.3 and 6.5 degrees. This difference in torque can impact the feel and stability of the shaft during your swing.

The kickpoint, or bend profile, of a shaft, is important because it affects the trajectory of your shots. The Tour AD DI shaft has a mid-to-high kickpoint, which promotes a mid-to-high ball flight.

In contrast, the Tour AD IZ shaft has a mid kickpoint, providing a mid-launch trajectory. Depending on your swing and desired ball flight, one of these profiles might suit you better.

Brand reputation

Graphite Design is a highly respected brand in the world of golf shafts, and both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts have garnered positive reviews and success on professional tours. You really can’t go wrong with either of these shafts when it comes to brand reputation.

As premium shafts, both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts come at a higher price point than some other options on the market. The exact price may vary depending on the retailer and specific model, but you can expect to pay a similar amount for both shafts.

Tip diameter

Both shafts come with a standard tip diameter of 0.335 inches for drivers and fairway woods and 0.370 inches for hybrids. This standard sizing allows for compatibility with most clubheads.

Butt diameter

The butt diameter differs slightly between the two shafts. The Tour AD DI has a butt diameter of 0.600 inches, while the Tour AD IZ has a slightly larger butt diameter of 0.602 inches. This small difference might affect the feel and grip of the shaft in your hands.

Tour AD IZ vs di: Which golf shaft wins?

Both the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts are high-quality options made from aerospace-grade carbon fiber materials, designed to cater to a variety of player profiles. The differences between them lie mainly in their weight range, torque rating, and kickpoint.

The Tour AD DI shafts have a slightly heavier weight range and a higher torque rating, leading to a mid-to-high kickpoint for a mid to high ball flight.

On the other hand, the Tour AD IZ shafts have a wider weight range with a lower torque rating and a mid kickpoint for a mid-launch trajectory.

Ultimately, the choice between the Tour AD DI and Tour AD IZ shafts will depend on your individual swing characteristics, desired ball flight, and personal preferences.

It’s always a good idea to consult with a professional fitter or try out both shafts to find the one that best suits your specific needs and playing style.
