Some Cambodians wryly observe that Cambodia has three seasons – hot, hotter and hottest – but in reality, there are distinct dry and wet seasons that define the harvest cycle and dramatically alter the character of the landscape in this fascinating Southeast Asian nation.

The dry season runs from November to May, and the "cool season" months of November to February are the most popular time to visit Cambodia due to milder temperatures. The countryside appears somewhat parched from February to May when daytime temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F ).

The wet season usually runs from June to October, coinciding with the southwest monsoon, but it's not necessarily a bad time to travel to Cambodia. It usually only rains heavily once a day towards sunset, the countryside is a blaze of green, and many hotels and resorts offer substantial discounts.

Here's a guide to the best times to visit Cambodia.

The high season (November–March) is the best time for good weather and exploring temples

Temperatures in Cambodia are much more Mediterranean during the "winter" months in Southeast Asia. The mercury occasionally drops below 20°C (68°F), forcing Cambodians to scramble for their coats and woollies. This makes exploring the temples much more pleasant, but it's also the most crowded time at Angkor . Lots of accommodation is booked out in advance, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period and during Chinese New Year, which follows the lunar calendar, falling in January or February.

The shoulder season (July–August) is the best time for families

Although this is the middle of Cambodia's wet season, it doesn’t usually rain that much, though there's enough water to swell the Tonle Sap lake. It's an ideal time for families living in Europe and North America, thanks to the long school holidays and discounted prices at hotels and resorts.

There are also far fewer tourists exploring Angkor during the "green season" when the moats are full of water and many of the temples are coated in moss and lichen. The main drawback of shoulder season travel is that it can rain quite heavily on the coast, meaning Ko Rong and other idyllic islands near Sihanoukville can be quite wet and windy.

The low season (April–June & September–October) is the best time for discounts

When it comes to weather, these months are definitely not the best. Temperatures in April and May reach scorchio levels, and September and October are wet, wet, wet. However, this is the time when accommodation providers release their best special offers. You can save a huge amount of money if you plan on staying at five-star hotels and luxury resorts. September and October are the height of the rainy season, but this also brings emerald landscapes and epic cloud formations.

A month-by-month planner

Many of Cambodia's big festivals follow the lunar calendar and spill across more than one month on the Gregorian calendar. Here's a guide to what is happening throughout the year.

January–March is the busiest time of year

This is peak tourist season in Cambodia, and Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the South Coast are usually heaving. The internationally recognized New Year celebrations are followed by Chinese and Vietnamese New Years' festivities, so be ready for some serious festive cheer.

Chaul Chnam Chen & Tet: The Chinese New Year – known locally as Chaul Chnam Chen – coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, falling in either January or February depending on the year. As many of Phnom Penh ’s businesses are run by Chinese-Khmers, commerce grinds to a halt around this time and there are dragon dances all over the capital.

April–June brings festivals and the start of the rains

This is the beginning of the low season for visitors, as the monsoon swoops in, bringing regular rain until October. Young rice is planted and the landscape begins to come to life once more in a blaze of green after the parched months of the dry season. April is the most important month in the calendar for Khmers, marking the Cambodian New Year. However, temperatures rocket and the mercury regularly hits 40°C (104°F).

Chaul Chnam Khmer: During the three-day celebration of Chaul Chnam Khmer (Khmer New Year) in mid-April, Cambodians make offerings at wats, clean out their homes and exchange gifts. It is a memorable time to visit the Kingdom as Khmers go wild with water in the countryside, and a good-natured water fight spills across the country (throwing talcum powder is also popular).

Chat Preah Nengkal (Royal Ploughing Ceremony): Presided over by the royal family, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient agricultural festival held to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season. The royal oxen predict whether or not it will be a good harvest by tucking into the sacred crop. The ritual takes place in early May and rotates around different provincial capitals.

Visakha Puja (Buddha Day): A celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinibbana (passing), Visakha Puja sees locals flock to wats (pagodas) to pay their respects. The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth moon (in May or June) and sees processions of monks carrying candles through Angkor Wat at night.

July–September sees more celebrations and crowds of backpackers

Tourism numbers see a bounce in July and August thanks to the annual school holidays in Europe and the US. Backpackers also descend on Cambodia and the Mekong region to take advantage of university and college holidays. September is traditionally the wettest month in Cambodia, with sporadic flooding along the Mekong and around Battambang . The Khmer calendar’s second-most-important festival, P’chum Ben, falls in September or October.

P’chum Ben (Festival of the Dead): This festival resembles the Christian celebration of All Souls’ Day when respects are paid to the dead through offerings made at wats. P’chum Ben lasts for several days and devout Buddhists are expected to visit seven wats during the festival. Local temples are a blaze of color, ceremonies and chanting.

October-December sees rain give way to warm, dry winds

The rains extend deep into October and this has led to some serious flooding in recent years. However, the countryside is extraordinarily green, and it's a rewarding time for boat travel between Siem Reap and Battambang. November sees the start of the dry, windy season, the best time to be in the country. The peak tourist season starts and continues through until February.

Bon Om Tuk, the much-celebrated Water Festival, takes place in October or November. Christmas and New Year are peak times for visitors at Angkor and leading beach resorts, so book a long way ahead. The international New Year on 31 December is widely (and wildly) celebrated in key cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Bon Om Tuk (Water Festival): Celebrating the victory of King Jayavarman VII over the Chams, this important festival in October or November also marks the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of the Tonlé Sap River. It’s a wonderful, chaotic time to be in Cambodia, with boat races at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, and riverside parties in Siem Reap.

Angkor Photo Festival: In Siem Reap, resident and regional photographers descend on the temples and team up with local youths to teach them the tricks of the trade at this civic-minded festival in November or December. Photography exhibitions are staged all over town and some famous Vietnam War-era photographers are sometimes in attendance.

Angkor Wat International Half Marathon: This half marathon in December has been a fixture on the sporting calendar for two decades. Choose from a 21km (13-mile) half marathon, a 10km (6.2-mile) fun run or various bicycle races. It’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for a run than the incredible temples of Angkor.

Tourist Season in Cambodia

The main tourist season in Cambodia typically falls between November and March. During this period, the weather is relatively dry and pleasant, making it an ideal time for travelers to explore the country’s diverse attractions.

This season is particularly popular among tourists due to the cooler temperatures and lower humidity compared to the rest of the year.

In this peak season, visitors can expect vibrant festivals, bustling markets, and a wide array of cultural experiences. The iconic Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap, with its stunning temples and ancient ruins, is a major draw for tourists during this time.

Additionally, the capital city of Phnom Penh offers a blend of historical landmarks, modern developments, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

Off-Season in Cambodia

The off-season in Cambodia typically occurs during the months of April to October. This period is characterized by the country’s rainy season and higher humidity levels. While it is considered the off-season for tourism, there are still opportunities for travelers to visit and explore Cambodia during this time.

The off-season presents its own unique advantages and considerations. One of the main benefits is that tourist sites, such as the magnificent temples of Angkor, are generally less crowded, allowing visitors to appreciate their beauty in a more tranquil setting. Additionally, accommodation and flight prices tend to be lower, making it a more budget-friendly time to visit.

However, it’s important to note that the weather during the off-season can be unpredictable, with occasional heavy rainfall. This can affect outdoor activities and transportation, as well as potentially leading to temporary closures of certain attractions.

Travelers should come prepared with appropriate rain gear and be flexible with their plans to accommodate any changes in weather conditions.

Climate in Cambodia

1. cambodia in winter.

During the winter months in Cambodia, which typically span from November to February, the country experiences a delightful change in weather. With cooler temperatures and drier conditions, winter offers a pleasant respite from the hot and humid climate that characterizes other seasons. Travelers flock to Cambodia during this time to explore its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities.

One of the highlights of visiting Cambodia during the winter is the opportunity to explore the renowned Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap. The ancient temples and architectural wonders of Angkor are even more captivating against the backdrop of clear blue skies and cooler temperatures.

Winter also presents the perfect conditions for exploring the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh, with its charming riverside promenade, fascinating museums, and vibrant markets. Additionally, visitors can embark on river cruises along the Mekong River, where they can witness picturesque landscapes and immerse themselves in the traditional way of life along the riverbanks.

2. Cambodia in Summer

During the summer months in Cambodia, which typically span from April to October, the country experiences its rainy season. While this time of year may deter some tourists, it offers unique opportunities and a distinct charm for those who choose to visit. Cambodia during the summer showcases its lush, vibrant landscapes, and provides a more relaxed and tranquil atmosphere.

One of the advantages of visiting Cambodia during the summer is the opportunity to witness the country’s stunning natural beauty at its peak. The rain revitalizes the countryside, resulting in lush greenery, blooming flowers, and picturesque landscapes.

Travelers can explore the countryside and enjoy activities such as trekking through rainforests, visiting waterfalls, or embarking on boat trips along the mighty Mekong River. The summer season also offers a chance to witness traditional farming practices, as the rice fields are in full bloom, presenting a breathtaking sight.

Moreover, the summer season in Cambodia provides a quieter and less crowded experience compared to the peak tourist season. Visitors can take advantage of this by enjoying more intimate visits to popular attractions, such as the iconic temples of Angkor, with fewer crowds and ample opportunities for contemplation.

Additionally, the summer months often bring discounted prices for accommodation and flights, making it a more budget-friendly time to explore Cambodia.

3. Cambodia in Monsoon

During the monsoon season in Cambodia, which typically spans from June to October, the country experiences heavy rainfall and increased humidity. This period brings a unique charm and a different perspective to the Cambodian landscape.

While it may not be the most popular time for tourists, there are still opportunities to explore and appreciate Cambodia’s cultural and natural treasures during the monsoon.

One of the advantages of visiting Cambodia during the monsoon season is witnessing the country’s lush and vibrant greenery. The rain showers breathe new life into the landscapes, transforming them into a tropical paradise.

The temples of Angkor, enveloped in a lush blanket of vegetation, exude a mystical aura against the backdrop of dramatic skies. Additionally, the monsoon season provides an opportunity to witness the local way of life as farmers cultivate their rice fields and the countryside teems with activity.

While the monsoon season presents some challenges, such as occasional downpours and muddy paths, it also offers unique experiences and advantages. Travelers can take advantage of fewer crowds at popular tourist sites, allowing for a more intimate exploration of Cambodia’s cultural treasures.

Moreover, the prices for accommodation and flights are generally lower during this period, making it a more budget-friendly time to visit.

When's The Best Time of Year To Visit Cambodia?

A typical rural Cambodian scene

Cambodia is a year-round destination, depending on what you’re looking for. Here, we take readers month-by-month through the Cambodian calendar, so you can decide when’s the best time to plan your trip.

The fact that November to January is classed as Cambodia’s high season suggests January is traditionally one of the best months to visit the country. Temperatures are cool and the dry season is in full swing, meaning the weather is at its peak. However, this comes coupled with crowds as January is one of the busiest months, so tourist traps such as Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh’s riverside become way more congested than usual. Accommodation prices are also at their highest. To avoid the crowds, swop Sihanoukville’s beach for Kep’s, skip sunset at Angkor Wat and enjoy it at Ta Prohm instead, or head to the laid-back riverside town of Kampot.

Temperature: 78.8°F (26 °C)

Rainfall: 10mm

Enjoy idyllic Kampot River

Weather-wise, February is still a good month to visit, with temperatures remaining relatively cool in Cambodian terms. Mango rains can make an appearance towards the end of the month, usually a surprise appearance overnight. While the heavy tourist crowds are starting to wane, Cambodia’s tourist hot spots can still remain crammed. If you’re in the country for Valentine’s Day then prepare yourselves because this Western celebration has been increasingly welcomed by Cambodians in the last few years, with heart-shaped balloons, giant stuffed bears and huge bunches of flowers dominating the landscape.

Temperature: 80.6°F (27°C)

Rainfall: 20mm

Valentine’s Day in the capital is an experience

March is when things start really heating up in preparation for the humidity of April and the tourist crowds start noticeably thinning out. Now is a great time to head into the Cardamom Mountain’s jungle, with months of dry weather – or very little rain – making trekking paths more accessible and the blood-thirsty mosquitos less aggressive. Spending a lazy weekend on the river on the outskirts of Kampot town is another great March activity, with a drive to the top of Bokor Mountain offering refreshing breezes away from the mounting heat. While the rains are still a couple of months away, March marks the tail end of dry season so Cambodia’s vast countryside is arid, dry and dusty.

April’s sweltering heat and oppressive humidity makes walking outside akin to wading through thick muggy air and visitors should expect to sweat by the bucketload. Temperatures are known to hit more than 104°F (40°C) Despite this, April comes with a sense of celebration because it is the month of Khmer New Year . While the exact dates vary, this year’s falls on April 11, 12 and 13 – with April 14 being observed as an additional public holiday. Expect Phnom Penh to shut down in eerie 28 Days Later- style as Cambodians head to the provinces to ring in the New Year with their families. Escape the heat with a trip to Kirirom. About 1.5 hours from Phnom Penh, Kirirom is home to sprawling pine forests where the temperature dips a good few degrees lower than in the city. Bliss.

Temperature: 95°F (35°C)

Escape the heat in Kirirom’s pines

May’s temperatures may be marginally milder than April but it’s still sweltering hot. May tends to remain relatively dry despite Khmer New Year traditionally welcoming the rains, although they may start to fall towards the end of the month. May is also littered with public holidays, with one day given for International Labour Day, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony and the recently added Day of Remembrance. A three-day holiday is held from May 13 to 15 to mark King Sihamoni’s birthday. For the longer holiday, spots such as Otres in Sihanoukville and Kampot fill up quick with the expat and local exodus. Avoid the crowds and keep cool by heading to the remote province of Mondulkiri. The temperature is also much cooler in this mountainous region, which is famous for its elephants.

Temperature: 84.2°F (29°C)

By June, the rains should have started, bringing ripples of reprieve across Cambodia as humidity hits up to 70% during the day. While the sun still dominates the sky in between the showers, coastal areas, such as Sihanoukville and Kep, as well as the Cardamom Mountains can suffer from heavy downpours, dampening trips to these places. Despite this, June is a good month to explore Cambodia as visitor numbers are low ahead of the Western school summer holiday rush, the sun is still mostly wearing her hat, low season prices are starting and, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of those cracking lightning displays that flash throughout the night.

Temperature: 82.4°F (28°C)

Catch a cracking lightning display

By now monsoon season should be in full swing – although climate change has seen Cambodia’s usual clockwork weather play up in recent years, devastating the livelihoods of the country’s swathe of farmers and fishermen. However, fear not because the rain doesn’t usually dog the entire day, comes with plenty of warning, and is a spectacle for those who have never experienced them before. Usually the sky plunges into dark and sharp winds whip up, giving you about 30 minutes to find shelter before the skies open and rain angrily hammers from the sky for about an hour. Quickly after, the skies are once again blue, the sun is shining, and the only evidence is flooding.

Rainfall: 40mm

Expect flooding

Rainfall tends to hit its peak in August, although showers are commonly shorter and heavier. While the term “rainy season” can be a turn-off for many, don’t let it put you off. In fact, this time of year can be the best to visit, with temperatures cooling, the countryside is lush and green – nothing beats emerald paddies contrasting against an angry grey sky – while the dust is washed away and the country’s many waterways are brimming and in full flow. Don’t forget to pack a light raincoat as these downpours can occur at any time. However, if you leave it behind, don’t worry because the streets are dotted with stalls selling disposable rain covers for about $1.

Temperature: 78.8°F (26°C)

The lush countryside contrasts against the stormy sky

The monsoons continue throughout September, with the results of months of rain now evident across the country. Paddies are flooded and rivers overflowing, making this a great time to explore the countryside. It is also the perfect time to take a trip on the Tonle Sap Lake, which swells to more than five times its size during monsoon season and is home to many floating villages and flooded forests. If you dare to take your chances of getting wet at Angkor Wat , then September is a good time to go as the crowds are at their lowest – besides, capturing iconic Angkor in the midst of a lightning storm is pretty awesome.

Rainfall: 60mm

With the rains starting to subside as the month progresses and the dry season just around the corner once more, October is another good time to visit the country. The waterfalls of Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri, as well as at Kulen Mountain in Siem Reap province, are gushing, making them great refreshing swimming spots. And the rain has started to wane on the coast, although showers should still be expected. Another major holiday falls in October in the form of Pchum Benh – again dates vary but this year it’s from October 8 to 10. This is a time when Cambodians believe the last seven generations of dead ancestors unable to move onto their next life roam the earth hungry. Many visits to pagodas to give offerings to monks to pass onto the dead take place.

Rainfall: 50mm

As dry season starts, high season also begins. Temperatures are starting to fall, humidity levels are low, the rains are well and truly subsiding and the crowds are once again starting to trickle back in. This is a good time to start hitting the coast and islands, with the sun pretty much guaranteed to shine all day. However, make sure you’re in Phnom Penh for Water Festival – or Bon Om Touk. Dates vary, with 2018’s event falling on November 21 to 23. During this three-day event, which marks the start of the fishing season as well as the reversal of the Tonle Sap River, hundreds of colourful dragon boats from across the country race along the river. Millions flock from across Cambodia to watch the spectacle so the capital gets busy.

Temperature: 77°F (25°C)

Water Festival in Phnom Penh

In terms of temperature, December is undoubtedly the best time to visit. Rainfall is very rare, humidity is next to nothing and many Cambodians are sporting their winter woollies and jackets, while complaining about the cold. If you’re coming from a cooler climate, then you don’t need to worry about the “cold”, however, it can get a bit nippy at night in the back of a tuk tuk, or if you’re heading to the coast or rural areas, where temperatures can dip so it’s worth bringing a light jumper. On the down side, December is a peak month, so the crowds are heaving, Angkor Wat is choked, and prices are at their highest. While Cambodia is a Buddhist country where Christmas isn’t celebrated, Christmas trees, decorations, festive events and Father Christmas hats dominate December.

When not to visit Cambodia

April is undoubtedly the month to avoid visiting the Kingdom of Wonder. Hot and sticky define each waking moment, with wading through the muggy air a mission. Air conditioning becomes your new best friend and lazy days around the pool the most energetic activity. On the upside, prices are at their lowest and if you avoid the cities and head to the country or hills, then temperatures become almost bearable.

When's the best time to visit Cambodia

The best time to visit Cambodia is from November to April. Temperatures in this period typically range from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). This season offers dry weather and clear skies, ideal for exploring the southern coast and other attractions.

The weather is hot all year round, but peaks in March and May when temperatures can reach around 32°C and above. In December and January , the weather is dry, but the temperatures are slightly cooler - it’s usually expected to be approximately 25°C - 30°C (77F - 86F) at this time of year.

The cooler part of the season between November and February is the peak time for tourism. Mild enough to explore temples in comfort but warm enough to sunbathe by the coast.

May to October brings around 75% of the countries annual rainfall. The rainy season is humid, and temperatures will still be high.

Are you looking for the best month to visit Cambodia? Here’s our month by month guide. It will give you a good idea of the climate and how this might affect your travel plans.

Visiting Cambodia in January

January, typically the coldest month in Cambodia, still boasts warm temperatures of 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). The slight dip in temperature makes it more comfortable to explore cities like Siem Reap , Phnom Penh and Battambang . The reduced humidity facilitates easier visits to temples, markets, and museums. Since this is among the best times to visit Cambodia, expect more crowded conditions. Early booking for accommodation is advised due to the high demand.

Visiting Cambodia in February

February's slightly lower temperatures still make for comfortable travel conditions across the country. Whether you're looking to explore ancient temples, vibrant markets, or lush jungles, this time provides an excellent backdrop for your adventures. Accommodation prices remain high, and popular sites can be crowded, so advance booking is recommended.

Visiting Cambodia in March

The temperatures increase between March and May. In March, the heat begins to intensify across Cambodia, with temperatures climbing over 30°C (86°F) in some areas. This month marks the beginning of the warmer season, transitioning away from the cooler, more comfortable weather of the preceding months. Despite the rising temperatures, March still offers a relatively moderate climate compared to the peak heat of April and May. If you want to visit the Temples of Angkor , explore the colourful markets or trek in the jungle, it can be the best time to do so.

Visiting Cambodia in April

In May, temperatures in Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat can be as high as mid 30 to 40°C. The rainy season begins in May, but there is a moderate rainfall compared to the extremely wet months of September and October. Kep and Kampot are popular at this time of year.

The Khmer New Year spans across three days in mid-April. In the capital Phnom Penh , most major attractions, museums and restaurants close during the celebration as Cambodians return to provinces to celebrate with family. Siem Reap usually has events taking place too. In the countryside, families celebrate as they reunite. It’s one of the busiest celebrations of the year, so you’ll need to book accommodation early.

Visiting Cambodia in May

You can be sure of sunshine and heat in the southern islands, which is perfect for lazy days on the beach and water activities. The temperature is cooler on the coast. Angkor Wat in April and May can be unbearably hot for some visitors. Avoid visiting unless you can handle humidity. March can be a little cooler and can be a good compromise if you are looking for the best time to visit Cambodia.

Visiting Cambodia in June

June to August is the rainy season, and although you can expect a downpour, temperatures are approximately 30°C or more, and very humid. Sihanoukville is also the entry point to the islands of Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev. Tranquil Koh Ta Tiev remains peaceful undiscovered territory although there are some more lively beaches like Ochheuteal Beach and Serendipity beach where you can party from sunset to sundown.

Visiting Cambodia in July

Cambodia can be less popular during the summer, which is officially when the rainy season is in full swing. The rainy season can still be the best time of year to visit Cambodia. It’s also known as the “green season” as the countryside is flourishing. During rainy season Cambodia is in full bloom, and it’s a great chance to see the landscape as a lush green oasis.

Visiting Cambodia in August

The amount of rainfall per day starts to increase towards August. It can rain every day in the wet season in Cambodia, but generally, there won’t be a downpour that lasts all day, although that can happen.

Visiting Cambodia in September

During September, the country transforms into a waterlogged expanse of tropical green under the daily deluge of rainfall. It’s a fascinating time to see the country, although dirt roads can turn into mud and flooding is commonplace.

Visiting Cambodia in October

Although the rainfall can present practical challenges, it can be a beautiful time of year to see the stunning scenery of Cambodia. It can be a great time to visit the floating markets of the Tonle Sap, and Angkor Wat is quieter than in December and January.

Visiting Cambodia in November

In November, the temperatures are cooler, and there is less rain. It marks the end of monsoon season, and this becomes a popular time to visit for many tourists. It is also the month the Cambodian Water Festival is celebrated. This festival celebrates the reversal of the Tonle Sap River into the Mekong River. In early November, the Bonn Om Toeuk Water festival has traditionally been celebrated in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. You can watch the colourful boat races take place on the Mekong. Most towns and villages seek to participate by building boats that can hold up to 100 people

December in Cambodia is a preferred month for many tourists due to cooler temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). It's an excellent time to visit iconic sites like the Temples of Angkor, colourful markets, and embark on jungle treks. This month also offers the best conditions for visiting lakes, rivers, and the Tonle Sap floating villages, still full from the rainy season. Remember, it's peak travel season, so booking accommodation early is crucial, especially for a Christmas stay. Prepare for crowds, particularly at major tourist spots like Angkor Wat.

The southwesterly monsoon from May to October brings the rainy season, humidity and strong winds. The northeasterly monsoon brings the sunshine. From November to April, Cambodia is still hot with average temperatures rising to around 32°C (89°F).

It doesn’t rain all day during the rainy season, so it’s possible to visit some of the highlights of Cambodia while avoiding the crowds. Summer can be the best time for families to travel to Cambodia if they need to coincide with school holiday dates. Everything is quieter wherever you choose to visit.

Flooding can be a problem on the roads in Cambodia during the summer, and although you can travel anywhere, it may take a lot longer. Mud can cause road closures, especially in the countryside.

In September and October, the rain can be more substantial and more consistent. It’s naturally much quieter, making this the best time to visit Cambodia for some. Travelling by road can be impacted during the rainy season as flooding is a possibility.

During the rainy season in Cambodia, as it doesn’t rain all day, it can be a good time for sightseeing. It is one of the quietest times to visit major landmarks like Angkor Wat and the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. There will be fewer crowds and the countryside is appealingly green and lush. Some travel plans may be affected if travelling between the cities Phnom Penh , Battambang and Siem Reap , or if travelling to other villages as flooding can occur.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat ©Shutterstock

Millions of visitors head to Angkor Wat every year, and it can often get crowded, particularly between December and February. It is cooler at this time of year, but nothing can prepare you for the crowds. In the dry season, even if you get up very early before sunrise, you will experience crowds. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon if you want to avoid the sweltering hot weather at midday.

In March to May, it can get hotter, and the weather is usually dry and bright. For some, walking around Angkor Wat in the heat could be unbearable. Angkor Wat covers a large area, and you need to be prepared to travel around to see it fully.

During the rainy season in June to October, the whole of Angkor Wat will be quieter, so it is the right time to avoid the crowds. It’s most likely to rain in the afternoon, so it’s better to visit in the morning. Rainfall won’t impact the entire day, but mud roads or flooding may affect your journey to Angkor Wat. It may just take longer to reach your destination. The rainy season also brings intense humidity, so you need to be comfortable with heat if you choose to go at this time of year.

14 Top-Rated Places to Visit in Cambodia

Written by Jess Lee Updated Mar 18, 2024

Best known as both the home of the colossal temples of Angkor Wat and for the brutal Khmer Rouge era of the 1970s and later civil war, Cambodian history encompasses both some of humanity's greatest artistic accomplishments and most horrific deeds.

The history is what draws most travelers here, but this Southeast Asian nation has more tourist attractions to offer for those who linger longer than a short temple hop to Siem Reap.

Beyond the temples, Cambodia is a prime destination for Southeast Asia travels that manages to charm all who come.

The coastline of sandy white beaches tempts every sun sloth. The jungle-swathed countryside is geared up for the more intrepid, and the buzzing capital of Phnom Penh envelops visitors in the frenetic pulse of contemporary Cambodian city life.

Plan your sightseeing in this fascinating country with our list of the top places to visit in Cambodia.

1. Angkor Wat (Angkor Archaeological Park)

2. phnom penh, 3. koh rong samloem, 4. siem reap, 5. ratanakiri, 6. prasat preah vihear, 7. battambang, 9. tonlé sap lake, 10. koh kong conservation corridor, 12. sambor prei kuk, 13. banteay chhmar, 14. mundulkiri, frequently asked questions, when is the best time to visit cambodia.

Angkor Wat (Angkor Archaeological Park)

This temple city is the number one tourist spot in Cambodia.

Accessed from the town of Siem Reap, the temples of the Angkorian period are so ambitious in scale and in the majesty of their construction, that Angkor Wat is rated as one of the world's must-see ancient sites .

Built between 802 and 1432, this was the largest city in the world during the medieval age and the vast powerhouse of the Khmer kings who endeavored to outbid their predecessors in the beauty of their construction.

As the city's wooden dwellings were encroached and then decayed by the surrounding jungle, what remains today, are just those mighty temples.

The temple of Angkor Wat itself, the world's largest religious building, is only one sliver of the site in total, and the sprawling circuit of temples deserves three days to explore if you want to understand the scope of the Angkorian period's architectural achievements.

For those short on time though, the main highlights after Angkor Wat are the tree-root clasped temple of Ta Prohm (which first found international fame as a location used in the movie Tomb Raider), the Bayon Temple for its 216 stone-carved faces, Angkor Thom and Preah Khan.

Phnom Penh

Cambodia's capital is the frenetic heartbeat of the nation; a city of chaotic streets abuzz with motorbikes and car horns that can frazzle at first glance.

Deserted completely during the Khmer Rouge madness and left to wither and decay, Phnom Penh has bounced back to become one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic cities.

For visitors, this is Cambodia's most cosmopolitan destination, with a café and restaurant scene unrivaled in the rest of the country.

It's also home to a scattering of important historic sites that help unravel both Cambodia's modern and ancient history.

The National Museum is home to a swag of Khmer sculpture that traces the nation's history from the pre-Angkorian age right through to the phenomenal majesty of the god-Kings of Angkor.

The Royal Palace provides gorgeous examples of traditional artistry, while Tuol Sleng Museum and the killing fields of Choeung Ek speak of the horror and brutality the people of this country suffered under Khmer Rouge rule.

Koh Rong Samloem

Just off Cambodia's south coast lie a scattering of islands just as beautiful as their Thai counterparts to the west, but much less visited.

Compared to the now very developed islands of Koh Samui and Phuket , Cambodia's islands are a slice of laid-back tropical bliss, where sun and sand take center stage, and the big resorts have yet to make their mark.

Of all the islands, Koh Rong Samloem is one of the most beautiful, with the long, sandy Saracen Bay home to a dozen beach hut resorts that offer a welcome respite from the world.

It's really all about hammock-time here, but there's plenty of scuba diving activities on offer for the more active.

You can access these islands from Sihanoukville.

Street in central Siem Reap

Siem Reap is usually seen by travelers as among Cambodia's top places to visit due to it being the base for Angkor Archaeological Park, but the town itself offers more interesting attractions beyond the mighty temples.

This is the country's major activity center, with bundles of tours on offer, from cycle trips around the lush countryside just outside of town to Cambodian cookery tours.

Shoppers will also find plenty to keep them occupied, as central Siem Reap is brimming with opportunities to browse traditional crafts.

Make sure to visit Angkor National Museum, before heading to Angkor Wat itself, to dose up on the history of the site. The exhibits here explore the breadth of culture and artistry of the Khmer empire.

For evening entertainment while in town, don't miss Phare The Cambodian Circus. This internationally-renowned circus troupe and social enterprise puts on dazzling shows where performers combine theater, acrobatics, and music.

Ratanakiri

Ratanakiri is a nature-filled reprieve for travelers suffering from temple-fatigue.

This is outback Cambodia, and the endless red-dirt roads of the region, leading to ethnic minority villages, are an intrepid traveler's delight.

For those with an adventurous streak, the province is one of the best places in Cambodia for trekking, from spotting gibbons at Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Area, where overnight trips involve sleeping in hammocks and early rises to track buff-cheeked gibbons, to hiking in Virachey National Park home to elephants, tigers, and sun bears.

There's more relaxing options on offer as well. The emerald water of Yeak Lom Crater Lake just outside of Ban Lung town is a tranquil swimming spot, while the waterfalls of Chaa Ong and Ka Tieng are fun diversions that provide more opportunities for getting wet.

Prasat Preah Vihear

The temples of Angkor Wat may gain all the glory, but Prasat Preah Vihear wins the prize for the most dramatic location.

Sitting atop the Dangrek Mountains, on an escarpment with dizzying views across the Cambodian floodplains, Prasat Preah Vihear is a monumental temple complex of intricately carved pavilions linked by long causeways, built originally to honor the god Shiva.

The temple is snug against the border with Thailand and has historically been a point of contention between the two nations, who both claim it as their own.

The International Court of Justice ruled in Cambodia's favor in 2013 after border disputes flared up between 2008 and 2011.

Tensions have dissipated in the last few years, meaning this UNESCO World Heritage Site can now reclaim its rightful role on the tourist trail.

Access is from Sra Em, although most visitors come on a day trip from Siem Reap (200 kilometers south).

View from Phnom Sampeau Temple

The countryside of rice fields and tiny villages surrounding the northwest city of Battambang holds some of the most tranquil rural scenery in Cambodia, and the area is home to swags of historic riches as well.

All this has made the city itself a popular destination on traveler itineraries.

For history fans, the temples of Phnom Sampeau, Phnom Banan and Wat Ek Phnom are all within day-tripping distance, while the famed Bamboo Train - a single-line rail track where "carriages" made from a platform of wood and bamboo travel between Battambang's east bank and the tiny village of O Srav - is one of the most popular activities for visitors.

Battambang

Battambang itself is a rather sleepy city compared to the buzz of the capital, with a central district brimming with colonial buildings.

For those who found Phnom Penh's hectic buzz a bit too much to handle, Battambang is a thoroughly approachable town to use as a base.

Kampot river views

The laid-back riverine town of Kampot has oodles of old-world ambience.

The compact central district is a joy to ramble around, full of surviving shop-house architecture, some of which has been painstakingly restored.

Kampot's charm lies in its exceedingly chilled-out atmosphere, and many a traveler finds themselves waylaid here longer than they expected, having succumbed to its easygoing pace.

Rice fields in Kampot

For the more active though, this is also an excellent base for discovering the surrounding sights of the south.

The old French summer getaway of Boker Hill Station, with its abandoned church and eerie, empty shell of a once-grand hotel, is an easy day trip from town, as are the limestone caves of Phnom Chhnork and Phnom Sorsia both with old temples inside.

Tonlé Sap Lake

Tonlé Sap is Cambodia's most important waterway and Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake.

As well as being an important source of food and a vital tool for Cambodian irrigation, the lake itself is home to 170 floating villages that depend on fishing for their livelihood, with homes built directly on the water.

The houses, shops, churches, schools, and temples of these villages are built on rustic buoy foundations of lashed together barrels and bamboo, and all transport is by boat. They're a fascinating place to spend a day exploring.

One of the most interesting is the sprawling village of Kompong Luong, near the town of Pursat on Tonlé Sap's western shore, although the most popular village to visit is Chong Kneas near Siem Reap.

Tatai River

The Koh Kong Conservation Corridor stretches across an area within Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, south of the border town of Koh Kong in the country's southwest.

The highlands here, home to dense rainforest, winding rivers, and waterfalls, offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and boat tours.

Head to the Tatai River if you want to simply soak up the lush surroundings and take a time out from life. Here, you'll find a handful of boutique eco-resorts scattered along the riverbank all offering activities such as day hikes and kayaking.

Further south in the Cardamoms is the village of Chi Pat, an eco-tourism center with simple homestay and guesthouse accommodation and plenty of activities, ranging from multi-day treks into the forested mountains to wildlife-spotting river boat trips.

Boats on the Mekong in Kratie

If you're here for the full Mekong experience, you've come to the right place.

Spread along the banks of the mighty Mekong, Kratie has become a major destination for travelers due to its dolphin-watching tours.

The endangered Irrawaddy dolphins are endemic to the Mekong, and environmental measures have now been put in place to try and help their dwindling numbers.

Tourism has played a good role in trying to protect the dolphins by offering an alternative economy to fishing.

To see the dolphins head to Kampi, just north of Kratie, where there are plenty of boat tours available.

Sambor Prei Kuk

This pre-Angkorian temple site dates from the early 7th century when it was the capital of the Upper Chenla Empire.

More than 100 brick temples dedicated to various Hindu gods sit within the forest here, many half-swallowed by mammoth tree roots.

Archaeologically, the site is extremely important, containing some of Cambodia's oldest surviving buildings, but you don't have to be an archaeology buff to appreciate the ethereal beauty of this tree-wrapped site.

The most important temples in the archaeological site include Prasat Sambor, Prasat Tao and Prasat Yeay Peau which all have remarkably clear carvings on their temple walls and plenty of ethereal ambience provided by twisting tree trunks and coiling vines.

You can access Sambor Prei Kuk from Kompong Thom.

Carving at Banteay Chhmar

For a touch of Indiana Jones-style temple exploring, you can't beat Banteay Chhmar.

This mammoth temple complex sits consumed by surrounding jungle in Cambodia's lonely northwest, providing the perfect opportunity to discover the highlights without the crowds.

It was built by the 12th-century Angkorian king Jayavarman VII, and the remarkable stone reliefs along its walls are some of the most intricately detailed you'll see in the country.

In particular, the spectacular bas reliefs depicting Avalokiteśvara on the south wall and the dizzying array of battle scenes depicted on the eastern walls are prime examples of the Angkorian era's artistry.

The village neighboring the archaeological site has simple homestay accommodation. Otherwise, most people stay in Sisophon (60 kilometers south) or take a day trip to the ruins from Siem Reap.

Mundulkiri's Elephant Valley Project

Adventurous travelers beeline to the hill country of Mundulkiri Province in Cambodia's far east for wildlife spotting, village life, trail-bike tours, and the Elephant Valley Project.

The most famous tourist attraction in the region, the Elephant Valley Project offers visitors a chance to walk with the sanctuary's elephants (no riding allowed) while providing an opportunity for local mahouts (elephant keepers) to earn a wage that doesn't involve overworking their elephants.

For adrenaline-junkies, the Mayura zipline course skims right over the top of Bou Sra waterfall, while bird-watchers and wildlife spotters will want to take a tour into Seima Protected Forest, home to gibbons, the endangered black-shanked douc langurs, and plentiful birdlife.

The small town of Sen Monorom is the main base for travelers in Mundulkiri and within easy day-tripping distance to all of the tourist attractions.

Most visitors who arrive in Cambodia are heading to the Angkor Wat temples as their main destination - so it makes sense that the best time to visit Cambodia is when the temples are at their best. Weather-wise, the best time to visit Siem Reap and Angkor Wat is between December and February, when temperatures drop into the high 20s and the humidity is low enough to be bearable.

However, these months are part of the cool season, which is also high season in the country - this means higher prices, bigger crowds, and more expensive airfares. For better prices and slightly smaller crowds, consider arriving in March or early April - while temperatures are rising fast at this time, the rainy season is just starting by then, so you should be able to still enjoy the outdoors.

Phnom Penh has hot and humid weather all year-round, with just a small dip in temperature and humidity dropping to around 70 percent during the cool season. This is also a good time to visit Koh Rong, Cambodia's best beach destination.

Bridge at the entrance of Angkor Thom

When is the best time to visit Cambodia?

  • Temples of Angkor
  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November and April, when it sees very little rain. During this time you’ll see clear blue skies making it a great time to enjoy a relaxing getaway on the southern coast.

Outside of this period, humidity increases and the rains come, assisting Cambodian farmers in the growing of their crops. However, you shouldn’t be deterred from travelling — the countryside is lush and green, rivers are full and flowing, and the temples are quiet. This is the best time to visit some of the outer-lying temples, which will often be deserted.

At the end of the summer one of Cambodia’s true wonders comes to life — The Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and home to Cambodia’s floating villages.

Month-by-month guide for travelling in Cambodia

Buddhist Monks visiting The Bayon, Siem Reap

Visiting Cambodia in January

January is the driest month of the year in Cambodia and has a comfortable average temperature of 26°C, making this the perfect time to explore the temples in Siem Reap or relax on the southern coast's beaches.

Street life in Kompong Phluk on the Tonle Sap Lake

Visiting Cambodia in February

February sees little rain and temperatures are still cool enough to enjoy long walks around the temples. Conditions are still perfect for river travel during this time, and the great Tonle Sap still holds the bulk of its volume.

Cyclists at Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Visiting Cambodia in March

This is the peak time to visit Cambodia, and temperatures are likely to rise to the low 30°Cs. Water levels begin to fall toward the end of the month, meaning that the Tonle Sap is not as impressive. Hotels are often booked up far in advance during this period.

The Silver Pagoda, Phnom Penh

Visiting Cambodia in April

The peak season continues and temperatures reach sizzling heights, often exceeding 33°C. It is therefore best to explore early in the morning and in the late afternoon rather than embarking on full day excursions. The Chaul Chnam (Cambodian New Year) takes place during April, and although the rains should hold off, you should be prepared to get wet if venturing around town during those dates.

Events & Festivals

  • Khmer New Year (13th - 16th April): The country's most celebrated holiday, with towns and cities becoming deserted as people head home to be with their families.

Central market, Phnom Penh

Visiting Cambodia in May

With the wet season fast approaching, May provides a good opportunity to take advantage of promotional shoulder season offers as crowds begin to disperse. You should expect a few showers during this time of year, but nothing that will greatly impact on your trip. In fact, the showers help to break up the humidity, making for more comfortable conditions.

Young Khmer women working in the rice paddies

Visiting Cambodia in June

The rains come to Cambodia in June, bringing great relief to the farmers. For the most part, showers are short and sharp and should not impact on your trip, with plenty of sunshine still seen. Temples and other tourist sites are quieter at this time of year, and you can take advantage of many hotel promotions during Cambodia's 'green season'.

Ancient stone carvings in the jungle, Kulen Safari

Visiting Cambodia in July

The rains continue across the country and the beaches on the southern coast are best avoided. Temperatures start to decrease, averaging 27°C, and some of the outerlying temples are deserted at this time of year, making it a great time to explore some of the lesser-known destinations. Lots of families choose to visit at this time of year as it coincides nicely with European summer holidays.

Bayon face

Visiting Cambodia in August

Temperatures reduce further, making temple exploration all that more comfortable. Rains continue throughout the country and reach their peak; although showers only usually last for a few hours at most and tend to be more prevalent in the north of the country. The Tonle Sap fills up again, and flora and fauna is in full bloom, making this a good time to visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

Visiting Cambodia in September

September is Cambodia's wettest month and you should expect heavy showers daily; although these are normally short-lived and exploration is still possible. The rain does mean that some rural areas are difficult to access by road, so visiting a month either side is more attractive.

Wat Banan, Battambang, Cambodia

Visiting Cambodia in October

The rains begin to die down and temperatures average 27°C, making October a lovely time to visit Cambodia and its lush landscape. Beat the crowds and take advantage of early season promotional offers.

  • Pchum Ben (October): An important Buddhist festival marked throughout the country over 15 days, with main celebrations taking place on the final day as locals pay their respects to deceased relatives.

Crumbling stones of Ta Prohm, Siem Reap

Visiting Cambodia in November

Cambodia's peak season begins again and the crowds flock to the temples, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 25°C. It is the perfect time to venture out onto Tonle Sap lake . The Cambodian Water Festival usually takes place in November, and hotel prices are often higher at this time of year, so it is essential to book far in advance.

  • Bon Om Touk/Cambodian Water Festival (November): One of the nation's most popular festivals, celebrated over three days with concerts and boat races in Phnom Penh.

Rabbit Island

Visiting Cambodia in December

During December, Cambodia sees great weather throughout and can make for a rewarding Christmas destination. Hotels are often booked up far in advance.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Cambodia: The Ultimate Guide

best time of year to visit cambodia

Cambodia, also known as “the pearl of Southeast Asia” is a pocket-sized country that has a little bit of everything and a lot to offer.

So, when is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the rains? When is the best time to visit the famous temple of Angkor Wat? and when is the best time to avoid crowds? When?… That is the question.

Table of Contents

Cambodia’s weather, the dry season, the dry & cool season, cambodia’s high season, the rainy season, cambodia’s low season, the monsoon season, rainy season at angkor wat, for festivals.

In general, Cambodia’s weather is pleasant all year round. Temperatures stay in the low- to mid- 80s for most of the year and there are two principal seasons – the rainy season and the dry season.

There are advantages and disadvantages to traveling during both seasons, it just depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your trip to Cambodia

If you prefer to avoid the rain, then plan your trip between November and May. During the dry season, there is little to no rain.

Also, If you plan on visiting the more remote parts of Cambodia like Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri, you will have to go during the dry season as they are more accessible.

Within the dry season, is the cool season and high season. If you prefer cooler temperatures, you should travel from November to February. During the winter months the temperature drops a little – keyword being “little”. It still averages between 70-86℉ (21-30℃).

More specifically, in December and January, the weather is pretty much perfect! This is by far the best time to visit Cambodia weather-wise but just be aware that the idyllic weather brings gaggles of tourists along with it.

December and January are considered Cambodia’s high season mostly because they align with many other countries’ winter breaks. High seasons equals massive crowds at the major tourist spots.

While the droves of tourists can get overwhelming, the weather is pleasant and enjoyable as it’s smack dab in the middle of dry season (December and January) .

The rainy and wet months from May to October account for 75% of Cambodia’s yearly rainfall. The best time to go to Cambodia during the rainy season is between June and early September as the rains are not quite as heavy.

While rain can really put a damper on holidays in other parts of the world, in Cambodia it’s just part of life. The locals don’t let it ruin their day, and neither should you!

On rainy days you can still enjoy markets, galleries, museums, and more in Cambodia’s major cities. While the countryside is a beautiful vibrant green.

Remember that you will be traveling in South East Asia so try to embrace it and dance in the rain(forest)! Pack a rain poncho and some rain boots and you will be fine!

The low season coincides with rainy months from June to September. The worst part is the intense rains and the best part about it is the cheaper prices.

You will find more affordable flights and hotels during Cambodia’s low season. You can book luxury hotels at mid-range prices and take advantage of discounts and deals at Restaurants and shops.

Monsoons are seasonal changes in the direction of the wind that roll in around late May and early June and go well into October. Cambodia’s coastal regions take the brunt of the monsoons, but they cause rains that can only be described as torrential downpours in many regions.

If there is a monsoon during your trip it’s best to seek shelter in a cafe or restaurant and wait out the storm. You will get soaked and I’m afraid a poncho just won’t cut it in monsoon rains.

Traveling to Angkor Wat is an incredible experience no matter what, but if you visit during the rainy season you are guaranteed the best views! Angkor Wat’s greyish brown tones contrasting with the bright green make for poscard-worthy photos like the one below.

While you might find yourself playing hopscotch to avoid muddy puddles, I can assure you it’s well worth it. What’s more, when it rains, the moats surrounding the temple fill up with water!

Cambodia has lots of fun festivals throughout the year. Two of the best ones are Bon Om Touk and the Water Festival.

Bon Om Touk is a traditional festival that is usually held towards the end of October and the start of November each year. It represents the launch of Cambodia’s peak fishing season.

It takes place in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, and all along the Mekong River. The city comes alive and its landmarks are decorated with lights. Cambodians from all over the country come to compete in a race of dragon boats down the river. If possible, I highly recommend going to see the spectacle.

In April it’s time for The Water Festival. It lasts for about three days, and the locals get together for celebrations on the river banks and thank the God of Water for the rains.

Considering Cambodians rely heavily on agriculture for their economy, the farmers are especially thankful for the natural fertilizer and water. It’s a really unique experience.

  • Dry season: November to May
  • Cool season: November to February
  • Hot season: March to June
  • Rainy monsoon season: May to October.

Cambodia is a unique country with beaches, rivers, rainforests, and mountains. The best time to visit Cambodia depends on what kind of weather you prefer, but it genuinely makes for a great holiday at any time of the year.

Best time to visit Cambodia

In case you’re wondering what’s the best time to visit Cambodia, we have you covered. With a tropical climate and warm temperatures ranging between 25- 35℃ (77-95°F) all year round, Cambodia has a rather simple weather pattern. Deciding your itinerary would depend on your interests and the weather in that particular location at a given point of time. Peak season across the country is between October and March. The rainfall is relatively low and the temperatures are cool, which is ideal if you’re looking to explore the different regions of this country. Read on to figure out the best time to visit Cambodia.

rain season cambodia

Weather in Cambodia

There are two distinct seasons in Cambodia. The dry season starts in December and peaks post February. The season is further categorized into cool and hot temperatures. December to February fall under the cool season, with temperatures dropping to 16℃ (60°F) in December. April to June sees a relative hike in temperatures, making it incredibly hot. On the other hand, the wet or green season starts at the beginning of June. You will experience light showers every few days and cooler temperatures on most days. Days without rainfall mean a considerable rise in temperatures, especially between June and August. Maximum rainfall occurs in the months of September and October. Post this, you will get short bursts of light showers, mostly at the break of dawn or late at night.

Keen on witnessing lush green landscapes along the countryside? June to September is definitely the best time to visit Cambodia. However, the light showers will become heavier downpours in September. People often  falsely generalize the Cambodian monsoon with other popular Asian destinations. Unlike say, Vietnam , rainfall here is sporadic, allowing you to continue exploring the country without hampering your itinerary. The weather is cool and being off-season, tourist population is low. The country is rather quiet, with luxury hotels at affordable prices. The winter season on the other hand is overcrowded with tourists, and rates rise for everything ranging from accommodation to transport. Another great time to visit this picturesque region is from September to February. The water levels have risen, the floating villages reveal their magnificent beauty and the temperatures are relatively cool. Read on for a regional overview of the best time to visit Cambodia.

Best time to visit Siem Reap

Being a tropical country, Cambodia boasts warm weather almost all year round. The primary distinction between seasons is the amount of rainfall at that particular time of the year. By default, November to March are the driest months. There’s little to no rainfall in December and January and yet, relatively low temperatures; ideal for temple excursions and walking tours. The blue skies this time of the year make for the perfect weather for those looking to escape the gloomy winters in the northern hemisphere.

December and January are the coolest months of the year, making it the ideal time to explore the region. The lakes and rivers are relatively full post the monsoon. Thus, visiting the floating villages or the stilt villages on the Tonle Sap, or the waterfalls at Kbal Spean or Kulen Mountain is a good idea. The lush green countryside and vibrant paddy fields are another gorgeous site. The one drawback of this season is the large tourist crowds and hiked up rates for accommodation.

April and May mark the onset of the summer, so finish all sightseeing in the morning or evening, steering clear of the afternoon heat. For a unique experience, visit the region during the rainy season where you’ll probably witness a couple of thunderstorms while avoiding the crowds. We definitely recommend this for all those photography enthusiasts.

Angkor Wat is the irresistible charm of this temple town. But there’s more to Siem Reap than just Angkor Wat. Exploring the floating village,  traditional arts and handicrafts, and visiting the traditional circus are few other highlights of Siam Reap .

Best time to visit Koh Rong

Given it’s tropical climate, there’s really no bad time to visit this part of the country. The temperature and rainfall pattern play a crucial role in deciding when it is most suitable to visit this destination. Despite the minimal temperature fluctuations, May and June are slightly warmer. The humidity of the island makes the weather here seem hotter than it really is. Besides that, the temperature and humidity are both moderate all through the year. Rainfall is sporadic, September to November seeing the maximum amount of rainfall. October receives maximum precipitation during the year. Chances of lowest precipitation and the coolest weather conditions are from December to February, peak time for tourism. It is mild enough to explore the temples in comfort but warm enough to enjoy travelling and exploring the city.

Alongside January and February, April and May are also peak tourism months. If you’re looking for a budget trip with reasonably priced hotels and cheap airfare, August is just the right month to visit Koh Rong. Explore the island and indulge in exciting water sports like snorkelling and diving. Koh Rong also makes a great destination for some down time from the touristy parts of the country. Full moon parties, live music, jungle beach treks, Kayaking, with so much to offer, boredom is not an option here.

Best time to visit Phnom Penh

The dry season is divided into two distinct phases. The cool season here runs from November end to February. Humidity and temperatures rise slightly during the hot season (March–May). Phnom Penh and Battambang experience peak daytime temperatures of 33–35°C (91-95°F). Temperatures around Phnom Penh  vary very little with a moderate climate all through the year. The hottest months are March to April where despite average temperatures, the humidity makes it extremely hot. For a dry weather, January to March is your best bet, when precipitation is at its lowest.

The busiest month for tourism in Phnom Penh is January, followed by July and May. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months. However, you can get good rates if you purchase them well in advance. Want to experience boutique hotels and luxury stays? August is the best time to visit Cambodia’s capital. Being off-season with light, sporadic rainfall, some of the best luxury resorts are available at affordable budget rates. One thing you ought to keep in mind is the mild rainfall in the month of September till November, when rainfall is maximum and the humidity is high. Peak tourist season runs from December through February.

The Royal Palace, street food, boat rides and cycle rickshaw tours are our favourite experiences in this region of Cambodia. One sight worth experiencing is when the river flow changes and the Tonle Sap river meets the Mekong river in Phnom Penh. During the wet season the Mekong presses water into the Tonle sap lake. But, when the water level reaches a certain level it reverses and the Tonle sap river pushes into the Mekong – around November. The highlight is in the winter season when one can see the difference in colour where the rivers meet. That’s also when the water festivals take place.

Must-experience Festivals in Cambodia

Rich in culture, with a fascinating history, Cambodia is strongly influenced by the Buddhist culture. Meak Bochea Day is an important Cambodian festival that marks the day Lord Buddha conducted a sermon for 1250 monks at Rajagaha Valuwan Vihara, where Lord Buddha also stayed. Another festival worth witnessing is Khmer New Year, the largest celebration in Cambodia that marks the beginning of the rains and the end of the harvest season. Families reunite and perform traditional rituals, visit temples and socialise. The two festivals are usually celebrated in the months of February and April respectively. Khmer New Year can be best experienced in Siem Reap as celebrations take place across the entire city unlike Phnom Penh where most people head home to the countryside to see their family. Shops, cafes and several other establishments remained closed for this festival in particular.

The annual Royal Plowing Ceremony, usually celebrated in the month of May, is held by the Royal family. A representative of the king commences the harvest season by plowing with the royal oxen. The boat racing Water Festival, also known as Bonn Om Touk, takes place towards the end of the year in Phnom Penh. Cambodians celebrate it as a mark of respect for the naval forces. It stands out for tourists since it’s celebrated outdoors instead of being celebrated at home with family like most other festivals. One festival that is extremely fascinating is Pchum Ben. Locals believe that the last seven generations of dead family members that couldn’t get to the next life, visit earth that day. They either bring food to the pagodas, or even drop it in front of their houses or on the street as an offering to them.

Other interesting festivals in this diverse region include – The Cambodian Independence Day, and Visaka Bochea Day (Buddha’s “Birthday”). Now that you know the best time to visit Cambodia, you can organise your itinerary around which festival you want to witness.

To sum it up

Cambodia has opened to tourism only in the last two decades, thus the land remains unexplored with tons of offbeat experiences to offer. While Angkor Wat is definitely the highlight of this tropical nation, its rich culture, fascinating history, exciting ecotourism and tropical islands also add to the charm of Cambodia.

Our guide on the best places to visit in Cambodia will give you a broader perspective of this country and all that it has to offer. Given its year round moderate weather conditions, you needn’t think twice before picking what region to visit and at what time of the year.

When to visit to miss (most) of the rain

Three woman working in a rice field with hats on in Cambodia

The wet season in Cambodia usually runs from June through to October each year. That doesn't mean you'll avoid all rain if you travel outside of these months, but you'll definitely miss most of it. As in many South East Asian countries, an afternoon storm provides a welcome relief from the humid mornings, so trying to dodge any and all rain will mean you miss out on what's part of daily life in Cambodia. Just before the wet season, in April and May, Cambodia can often be incredibly warm and humid, so taking all of this into account, November–March is the best season to stay comfortable and dry.

When to visit to get those epic Angkor shots

The ancient structure of Angkor Wat among the surrounding trees in Cambodia

The Angkor complex, just out of Siem Reap, is a bucket-list item on everyone's Cambodian travel must-sees. There's no one perfect time to appreciate these wonders of the ancient Khmer empire, but we want to let you in on a little secret. While many tourists decide that December to March is the best time to visit the temples because it's dry, slightly cooler and less humid than usual, the air is often quite hazy and the complex super busy during this time.

There is a reason that this is a busy time – almost guaranteed good weather – but if you're looking for crowd-free temple shots, it's probably not for you. Why not consider going at the start or end of the wet season (May–June and October–November)? While you might find yourself dodging muddy puddles and getting stuck in a mighty rain shower once in a while, there's way less crowds, and there's often sun all morning and bursts of light throughout the day that peek through the monsoon clouds. Picture this: Angkor Wat drenched in an afternoon storm, then the skies calm to reveal glistening temples in the early evening sunlight, without a person in sight. Now that's a pretty epic shot and with a bit of luck, you might get to capture it.

When to visit to beat the crowds

A large crowd of people crowded around a lake in Cambodia

Cambodia's a very popular tourist destination – and we get it. It's beautiful, has a storied history and offers swathes of culture to get stuck into. All of this makes it tricky to find a time when it's crowd-free, but visiting outside of the November–March peak season is your best option. If that's just not achievable and your only opportunity to visit is in the busy period, it's best to steer clear of the Lunar New Year festival (encompassing Chinese New Year and Tet in neighbouring Vietnam), which usually occurs in late January or early February. If you can work around this, you'll still be able to check out the best this country offers without too many crowds.

Best for: water sports, scuba diving and hiking

The cool (ish), dry weather of January makes it one of the best times to visit Cambodia. With temperatures ranging between 20C-30C, outdoor activities are super popular – think scuba diving and snorkelling in Sihanoukville and hiking in the country’s mountains regions.

While the month’s nice weather means every popular city will be packed with other travellers, Cambodia’s breathtaking landscapes will soon have you forgetting the crowds.

Best for: beach time, island hopping and Angkor Wat exploring

Similar to January, February is smack bang in the middle of the peak season so expect to share the iconic sights and city streets with other travellers. Because temperatures are at a manageable 23C-32C, it’s the perfect month to get out and explore. Whether you fancy laying on a beach along the Cambodian coast with a cocktail in one hand and a good read in the other or explore the ancient grounds of Angkor Wat, you’ll never run out of things to do and sights to see.

Best for: wandering around temples, floating village visits and cycling through the countryside

Since the dry season runs until April, March is still a pleasant time (albeit a little stickier) to explore Cambodia’s diverse landscapes from the chaotic streets of Phnom Penh to the luscious countryside of Battambang. Popular activities to enjoy during the month include cycling, wandering around religious temples and visiting Tonle Sap Lake’s floating villages to make the most of the peak season’s rainless weather.

Two heaped plates of traditional Cambodian cuisine

Best for: boat tours, street food eating and pottery village visits

Say goodbye to the arid heat and hello to the stickiness that signals the end of the dry season in Cambodia. While you should prepare for the humidity (around 75%), potential rainfall and high temperatures of April, the monsoonal season isn’t here yet so it’s still a relatively nice month to experience the best of Cambodia.

Why not tickle your tastebuds on a street food tour in Siem Reap? Or embark on a cruise to take you from Siem Reap to Battambang? Cambodia is your oyster.

Best for: Royal ploughing ceremony watching, wildlife spotting and soaking up local culture

Stifling is one way to describe the weather in Cambodia in May but don’t let that deter you from exploring this magnificent country during shoulder season (in between peak and low seasons). While the humidity’s rising and rainfall is becoming more frequent, there’s still heaps to see and do, including witnessing the annual Royal ploughing ceremony that takes place every May.

Heralding the start of rice growing season, the King of Cambodia leads rituals steeped in centuries of Khmer tradition, even tilling a plot of land in the heaps of a successful and abundant season ahead. It doesn’t get more cultural than that.

Best for: museum visits, rice paddy day trips and Buddha’s birthday celebrations

One of the positives about visiting Cambodia in June is that the iconic sights and streets of the must-visit cities (we’re looking at you Siem Reap and Phnom Penh) will be relatively free of other travellers. However, one of the negatives of visiting during monsoon season is that you will get drenched at some point – that’s just a fact. Pack your thongs if you don’t want to get your shoes ruined.

But while it’ll definitely rain during your stay, the downpours only last for a short period, leaving you plenty of daytime left to explore everything Cambodia has to offer whether you’re dying to visit the luscious rice paddies or can’t wait to can’t wait to check out a museum or two.

A group of people clinking glasses in cheers at a bar in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Best for: bar hopping, Phare Cambodian Circus watching and Khmer culture

Although July is fully entrenched within Cambodia’s rainy season, the daily downpours usually occur over a short period at nighttime meaning you should be asleep for the bulk of them (unless you’re hitting up bars along Street 104 in Phnom Penh). But, while you might be able to avoid the worst of the rain, you won’t be able to escape the humidity with levels at an eye-watering 75%. So, you should definitely keep this in mind if you’re planning any long-distance hikes in the Cardamon Mountains or strenuous bikes rides.

Best for: Kampot day trips, elephant sanctuary visits and exploring the countryside

While the country may be at its rainiest, it’s also at its prettiest during August with the daily downpours ensuring Cambodia’s landscapes come to life. From the moss covering ancient temples in Siem Reap to rice paddies bursting with a colour so green you won’t want to take your eyes off them, rainy season sure makes this country look good. Like, really good.

If you can get past the rain, you’ll have the most iconic sites largely to yourself and this also means activity prices are lower and accommodation availability is high.

Best for: Ancestors Day festivities, farm tours and dinners at Srah Srong Lake

September is one of the wettest months in Cambodia so if you’re travelling during this month, remember to pack your gumboots and waterproof jackets. While the rain will try its best to dampen your travel-loving spirits, there’s still plenty to see and do (if you don’t mind getting a little wet).

It might seem like we’re harping on and on about the rain thing but, on average, it pours 2 out of 3 days. That doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun experiencing Ancestors Day (a festival that celebrates dead ancestors) and exploring local farms on guided tours though.

Best for: food tasting at Central Market, various visitor centres and art gallery strolls

October brings the highest humidity of the year (around 84%) so while the temperatures might not be that high (27C on average), it’s sure going to feel like they’re about 5C higher. It can still be a great time to explore Cambodia though, as long as you’re properly prepared.

Avoid spending long periods of time outside and instead opt for activities such as strolling through art galleries and tasting every traditional dish you can see at the Central Market in Phnom Penh. That way, you’ll be out of the heat and humidity while still enjoying the very best of Cambodia.

A woman staring out into the blue water with her arms outstretched in Cambodia

Best for: island life, water festival watching and market stops

You can expect the wet days to roll into November but there’s a light at the end of the monsoonal tunnel; the weather should start to turn nicer and drier as the month goes on. But crowd levels will start to increase with the peak season fast approaching. This means that iconic sights, such as Angkor Wat, will start to get busier and busier. If you want to avoid the worst of it, try visiting in the early morning or late afternoon – chances are there’ll still be plenty of people around but hey, at least you gave it your best shot.

Best for: marvelling at the Royal Palace, snorkelling and new years festivities

Yes, the arid and relatively cool weather of the dry season is back, but so is the dust. Because it rarely rains during this period, expect a nice haze across the spectacular landscapes. If that doesn’t bother you, December is an excellent time to visit and even coincides with the Aussie school holiday schedule – did someone say Christmas in Cambodia?

Definitely make the most of the incredible weather and spend as much time as you can outdoors whether that’s wandering through the Royal Palace on a guided tour in Phnom Penh or discovering Cambodia’s underwater world.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cambodia?

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Published on: January 31st, 2024

Last modified: January 31st, 2024

The best time to visit Cambodia is during the dry season from November to March, which promises clear skies and coolest temperatures of 30°C (86°F). To avoid the peak season crowds opt for the shoulder season months; May or October, or the wet season from June to September if you don’t mind some rain.

Cambodia really is lovely year round, so the best time to go depends on what’s most important to you. We’ve put together this detailed climate guide to explain the hottest, coolest, most humid, least crowded and all-around best times to travel to Cambodia.

Cambodia Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Although it’s relatively warm all year round, Cambodia experiences different weather in each season. Generally speaking, it can be divided into the dry season (November to May) and the wet season (April to October), but every month has specific conditions. To help you know what to expect, we’ve put together a month-by-month climate guide to Cambodia.

Cambodia in January

Best for cool weather.

January is one of the driest and coolest months in Cambodia – although here, ‘cool’ means 26ºC (79ºF) on average. The clear weather attracts lots of visitors to popular sites like Angkor Wat , so be prepared to face some crowds. Visit Phnom Penh in early January to catch local Victory Day parties celebrating the 1979 fall of the Khmer Rouge regime.

Cambodia in February

Best for clear skies… and giant puppets.

February in Cambodia is a slightly warmer month than January on average, although it tends to stay below 32ºC (90ºF). It’s also a popular time to explore Cambodia’s temples. On the last Saturday of February you can see the Giant Puppet Parade, a whimsical event in which children carry enormous puppets that they’ve created through the streets of Siem Reap .

Cambodia in March

Best for sightseeing.

March marks the beginning of Cambodia’s hot season, with temperatures climbing as high as 34ºC (93ºF). It’s a bit warmer and more humid than the preceding months, but still sees little rainfall, making it a popular time for sightseeing. International Women’s Day on 8th March has been declared a public holiday, highlighting the country’s ongoing work towards gender equality.

Cambodia in April

Best for small-town celebrations.

April in Cambodia is both the start of the rainy season and the month of the Khmer New Year. The rainfall is not too heavy yet so April is a good month for exploring all the usual destinations; just make sure to prepare for the heat – up to 35ºC (95ºF) – and stay hydrated.

To celebrate New Year in mid-April, lots of locals leave the big cities to spend time with family. This means you might get to experience local celebrations in more remote villages.

Cambodia in May

Best time to see the royal ploughing ceremony.

May in Cambodia is a month of mixed weather; warm temperatures, with some showers. The rain is sporadic and not too disruptive. May can feel very hot, with temperatures of around 34°C (93.2°F) which results in fewer visitors during the peaceful, shoulder season month of May.

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony in mid-May heralds the start of the rice-growing season. Two oxen predict the next seasons conditions, based on what they eat or drink during the ceremony.

Cambodia in June

Best time to get a temple all to yourself.

June is when heavy rain starts to fall in Cambodia, turning the landscape a brilliant green. Many travellers avoid the wet season, which means that temples and other attractions are often less crowded. If you’re willing to risk getting caught in a downpour, you might even be lucky enough to get a whole site to yourself. Luckily, the rain tends to come in quick bursts with sun in between.

Cambodia in July and August

Best for the low-season lull.

July and August are right in the middle of monsoon season, so expect high humidity and heavy rainfall. The showers can bring down the temperature slightly to around 30ºC (86ºF),  so if you prefer rain to heat, you’re in luck. July and August in Cambodia are typically delightfully quiet as crowds disperse to miss the rain.

July and August also boast lush scenery and abundant wildlife, making this one of the best times to go to Cambodia for nature lovers and photographers.

Cambodia in September

Best if you want to brave the rain.

Travelling to Cambodia in September is only for travellers who truly don’t mind rain. September is the wettest month of the year with cooler temperatures of around 31°C (87.8°F) across most of the country; Phnom Penh and Siem Reap for example.

It could be the best time to visit Cambodia for quiet temples, however heavy rain can make it harder to reach more remote destinations, making it tricky to get off the beaten track.

Cambodia in October

Best for experiencing ancestor’s day.

October in Cambodia falls right between the wet season and the dry season, which means it offers a good balance of smaller crowds and relatively nice weather – although it’s still extremely humid. Temperatures stay close to 30ºC (86ºF) and the rain starts to taper off as November approaches.

Another reason to visit Cambodia in October is to experience Ancestor’s Day (sometimes falling in September). During the festival Cambodians honour their deceased family members with elaborate rituals and offerings.

Cambodia in November

Best time to witness the water festival.

By the time November rolls around, the monsoon season is officially over in Cambodia. Conditions are dry and cool, with temperatures not typically exceeding 30ºC (86ºF).

This seasonal change is celebrated with the Water Festival (which sometimes falls in October instead), a celebration marking the annual reversal of the water flow between the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.

Cambodia in December

Best for a balmy winter holiday.

Cambodia’s weather in December is beautiful; clear, sunny and dry. Temperatures are manageable and not too hot at around 30ºC (86ºF). For this reason, December is one of the busiest months in Cambodia. Our travel designers recommend booking early to find the best exclusive, authentic and luxurious experiences and accommodations.

When Is Cambodia’s Monsoon Season?

Cambodia’s monsoon season runs from May to October, bringing intense showers and incredibly high humidity. The wettest months are usually August and September, with heavy rainfall on most days. The rainy season in Cambodia is also known as the green season, thanks to the lush green landscapes that bloom amidst the monsoons.

The Best Things to Do in Cambodia by Season

When it comes to choosing when to travel to Cambodia, it’s important to consider what you’re planning on doing. Certain activities are best enjoyed during specific months or broader seasons, and the weather can play a significant role in planning. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Cambodia according to the time of year.

best time of year to visit cambodia

Explore Angkor Wat

October to February is the dry season in Cambodia and is generally considered the best time to see Angkor Wat in all its glory. Of course clearer weather is ideal for outdoor sightseeing – although keep in mind that this is also the most crowded time of year at the iconic temple complex. However, if your main motivation for travelling to Cambodia is to see its legendary temples, this is still the best time to visit Siem Reap and its surroundings.

best time of year to visit cambodia

Discover Lesser-Known Temples

June through August are Cambodia's rainy months and are the low season in terms of tourism. These months can be the best time to visit Cambodia’s ancient temples which are now virtually empty. As long as you’re prepared for the possibility of being drenched by a sudden downpour, June through August can be the perfect time to explore sites like Banteay Srei, Ta Prohm and Beng Mealea.

best time of year to visit cambodia

Visit Phnom Penh

Visiting the capital city of Phnom Penh is one of the best things to do in Cambodia beyond Angkor Wat. The dry season (October to April) is the best time to visit Phnom Penh for sightseeing; walking around the city, doing street food tours and wandering through the grand gardens of the Royal Palace.

Even if the weather isn’t cooperating, there’s still plenty to do here; stay inside at one of the city’s fascinating museums, take a cooking class or hole up in one of its many marvellous restaurants. The combination of traditional and fusion cuisine paints a delicious picture of the country’s cultural influences, identity and evolution.

Escape to an Island Paradise

Few places on earth are as idyllic as the islands of Song Saa. As you might imagine, they’re best enjoyed when the weather is nice and clear. So, we suggest that the best time to visit Cambodia for beaches and islands is from November to April when rain is least likely.

We recommend staying at the gorgeous Song Saa Private Island Resort, which works to protect habitats and empower local communities through the Song Saa Foundation.

best time of year to visit cambodia

Spot Rare Species in Wild Cambodia

December to March is the best time to visit Cambodia for wildlife spotting. In southwestern Cambodia between Phnom Penh and the coast, you’ll find the pristine expanse of wilderness known as wild Cambodia where you can spot brilliant butterflies, tropical birdlife, elegant orchids and maybe even – if you’re lucky – a rare wild elephant.

Although there are fewer than 600 wild elephants in Cambodia, about half of them live here in the Cardamom Mountains. We suggest staying at Shinta Mani Wild to fully appreciate this extraordinary environment, whether you want to venture out into the wilderness or simply sit back and take it all in.

best time of year to visit cambodia

Glide Across Tonle Sap Lake

The best time to visit Tonle Sap Lake is during the monsoon season. From June to September the heavy rainfall causes the water level to rise significantly, making it a much more impressive sight than it is during the dry season.

Kayaking, boating or stand-up paddleboarding around the lake will allow you to observe this thriving freshwater ecosystem without disturbing the wildlife. You’ll also get a close-up view of local life in the lake’s floating villages and fishing communities, whose structures are built on bamboo rafts and stilts.

When to go to Cambodia

When is the best time to visit Cambodia?

The best time to visit Cambodia is during dry season, which runs from October to April. The wet season runs from May until September, with the heaviest rainfall generally in August & September. Average temperatures range from 24°C in the cooler months of October, November & December to 35°C at the hottest time of the year from March until June.

Cambodia weather & when to go

Pick a month below.

Weather seasons are becoming less predictable but peak visitor months remain more certain.

Unfollow the herd - avoid the peak months to enjoy fewer crowds, better availability, often lusher countryside and help to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

Weather overview

Cambodia is blessed with one of Asia's simpler weather systems. The country has two distinct weather seasons, but you can travel in Cambodia all year round.

In general, the entire country is subject to the same weather patterns, mainly due to the relatively uniform altitude and latitude throughout Cambodia.

Cambodia weather and seasons

There are two distinct seasons – dry (October to late April) and wet (May to late September). Within each season there are variations in temperature, with the final few dry months leading up to the wet season (March and April) and the early months of the wet season (May and June) usually being the hottest of the year with temperatures in excess of 35°C at times.

Humidity is at its highest during March and April whilst the coolest months of the year tend to be between October and December, however this is cool for Cambodia but far from chilly with average temperatures hovering around 24°C-26°C.

The Dry Season in Cambodia

October - april/early may.

Cambodia's dry season lasts from October to April, when the dry north-east monsoon arrives, characterised by hot wind blowing across the entire country. Whilst November to January are quite cool (high 20°C's), by April the weather is scorching making early morning and late afternoon Angkor Temple tours, with a few hours by the hotel pool at lunchtime, the preference for many.

Thanks to the hot weather this is unsurprisingly the season when Cambodia's tourist numbers peak.

In more remote parts, such as the north east regions of Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri , the roads are at their best and journey times are shorter because of this. Kep and Sihanoukville on the south coast are popular during this season as they bask in the brilliant sunshine and sea conditions are very favourable.

The Wet Season in Cambodia

Early/mid may - october.

Cambodia's wet season comes courtesy of the southwest monsoon and lasts from May to October, bringing with it almost 75% of Cambodia's annual rainfall. Across Cambodia, throughout much of the rainy season, daytime temperatures average between 25°C and 27°C. The early months of the wet season (May – July) remain very hot with infrequent rainfall usually in the form of short downpours. In the latter months (late July – September) the rain tends to becomes more constant and is heavy at times, especially in coastal and rural regions.

Travel in the more remote corners of the country, such as Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri, is almost impossible due to the state of the roads and journeys into the north east are inadvisable during the peak wet season because of this. There is also very limited access to Bamboo Island (near Kep) due to high seas.

Why travel to Cambodia during green season?

On the upside, travelling in monsoonal Cambodia does have its advantages. The dust is gone and the lush greenery of the countryside returns. Angkor Wat in particular is stunning in the wet season, with moats brimming with water and a severe drop in visitor numbers. High rainfall make it the perfect time of year to visit the flooded forests and floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake by boat, as it swells to more than 5 times its size during wet season.

Best Time To Visit Cambodia

Best time to visit Cambodia - cover

If you’re wondering when to visit Cambodia , you should know that there is no bad time for a trip to this lovely country. Cambodia is warm all year, but due to its monsoon climate, it has two distinct seasons: wet and dry. However, the dry period is divided into two distinct seasons: hot and cool. Regardless, the weather is likely to be scorching all year!

This guide will help you pick the best time to visit Cambodia so that you can still enjoy the entire adventure without being disrupted by the weather.

Cambodia Climate

Cambodian girl

When deciding when to visit Cambodia, consider the weather changes. The best time to visit Cambodia depends on the plans you have and whether you intend to avoid the rainy season.

The weather is hot all year, but it is burning in March and May, when temperatures may reach 32°C and even more. The weather is dry in December and January, although the temperatures are significantly lower – 25°C – 30°C (77F – 86F) is typical at this time of year. The milder months of the year, between November and February, are the busiest for tourists. Warm enough to enjoy the sun by the shore yet cool enough to explore the temples comfortably.

From May through October, the country receives around 75% of its yearly rainfall. The rainy season is humid, and the temperatures remain high.

From May through October, the southwesterly monsoon delivers heavy rains, high humidity, and brisk winds. The sunlight is a result of the northeasterly monsoon. The country of Cambodia has hot weather from November to April, with average highs of about 32°C (89°F).

The rain might be heavier and more frequent between September and October. For some, this is the perfect time to visit Cambodia because it is naturally quieter. Flooding is a concern during the wet season, which might have an influence on road travel.

In between November and April is the dry season.

Due to the milder (about 25°C) weather in November, it is a very popular month for travelers. If you prefer to explore the many monuments, marketplaces, and temples on foot since it’s less congested, this is the perfect time to go. The Cambodian Water Festival typically occurs this month as well. In Phnom Penh, it is customarily observed over three days with concerts and boat races.

Although it is dry and a great time to travel to the southern islands, December and January are also busy months in Cambodia. In March and April, temperatures start to increase to 30°C or higher. It might be rather humid for touring in March and April. It is one of the most important holidays in Cambodia, and it is observed in April.

December – February

Due to the cooler weather, the months of December through February are popular times to visit Cambodia. Even though January is often the coolest month of the year, average highs still range from 25 to 30 degrees. It can be the ideal time to go on a trip into the forest, visit the Temples of Angkor, or browse the vibrant marketplaces.

It’s a great time of year to explore places like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Battambang because of the somewhat cooler weather. Less humidity makes it a bit easier to tour temples, marketplaces, and museums. Everything is busier because it’s one of the finest seasons to visit Cambodia.

Since December to February is prime travel season, you should plan to make your hotel reservations sooner rather than later. The lodging is typically more pricey as well. Booking in advance is advised because Christmas is a popular time to visit Cambodia. Additionally, you must be ready for crowds in primary tourist destinations. During this period, Angkor Wat tours may get quite crowded. If you wish to see lakes, rivers, or the Tonle Sap floating communities, December is a wonderful choice because they are typically still populated after the wet season.

Best time to visit Cambodia Phnom Penh

March – May

March to May equals springtime in Cambodia.

You can enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful beaches of Cambodia in the spring. It could be the ideal time of year to travel to Cambodia if you’re looking for a beach vacation in a tropical paradise. At this time of year, travelers are drawn to the southern islands, Kep, and Kampot. The tranquility of Kampot and its relaxed atmosphere contribute to its allure. You may visit the surrounding towns of Kep and Rabbit Island at this time of year, or kayak and paddleboard along the Kampot River. Additionally, the beautiful sky makes it the ideal time of day for a boat cruise.

Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem, and Koh Ta Kyiv can all be reached from Sihanoukville. Although there are several busier beaches like Ochheuteal Beach and Serendipity Beach where you may party from sunset to dusk, tranquil Koh Ta Kyiv nevertheless remains a serene, unexplored area.

Mid-April sees three days of the Khmer New Year. Since many Cambodians travel back to their home provinces to celebrate with family, the majority of the city’s top attractions, museums, and restaurants close during the holiday in Phnom Penh. There are frequent events in Siem Reap as well. Families reconnect in the country, and they celebrate. You should reserve accommodations well in advance because it’s one of the busiest holidays of the year.

Events : Chaul Chnam (Cambodian New Year) (13 th -16 th April); Visak Bochea (Birthday of Buddha) (10 th May); Royal Ploughing Ceremony (13 th May); King’s Birthday (14 th May).

June – August

As mentioned, this is when the rainy season in Cambodia takes place.

Even during the rainy season, Cambodia may be visited at its finest. It’s also referred to as the “green season” since the countryside is in bloom. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness the environment as a lush green sanctuary while Cambodia is in full bloom during the rainy season.

During the rainy season, it doesn’t always rain, making it feasible to see some of Cambodia’s top attractions without fighting the throng. Families that need to visit Cambodia during school breaks may find that summer is the ideal time to do it. Wherever you choose to go, everything is quieter.

During the summer, flooding on Cambodian roads can be a concern, making driving more slower even if you can still get everywhere. Particularly in rural areas, mud can lead to road closures.

Best time to visit Cambodia

September – November

Under the daily downpour of rain, the nation turns into a soggy expanse of tropical green in September and October. Although flooding is frequent and dirt roads can turn into dirt, it’s an interesting time to travel across the country. Even while the rain might create practical difficulties, it can also be a great time of year to view Cambodia’s breathtaking beauty.

There is less rain and colder temperatures in November. As the monsoon season comes to a close, many travelers find this to be a popular time to go. A excellent time to explore the Tonle Sap floating markets, and Angkor Wat is less crowded than in December and January.

Events : Pchum Ben (Ancestors’ Day) 15-day festival (dates vary); Bon Om Touk (Water Festival) 3-day festival (dates vary)

The Best Time to Visit Angkor Wat

best time of year to visit cambodia

TripSavvy / Paula Galindo Valle

Choosing the best time to visit Angkor Wat can be a little tricky. You almost have to choose between rain and muddy temple sites or good weather with hordes of people who always seem to be in the way of photographs. Following the typical weather patterns for much of Southeast Asia, the best time to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia is during the dry season from late November to early April.

Fortunately, with a little timing, you can take advantage of the best times to visit Angkor Wat. Even better, travelers who hire drivers to visit ruins farther afield get rewarded with those Tomb-Raider-Indiana-Jones photos with no other tourists in the backdrop.

Peak Season at Angkor Wat

Cambodia’s crown jewel, the ruins of Angkor Wat and the surrounding Khmer temples, lure more than two million foreign visitors per year. Sometimes you'll feel as though at least a million chose the same day as you to visit!

While rain can detract from the experience during the monsoon season, heavy crowds—also a nuisance—descend on the ruins during the peak of the dry season. Although Angkor Wat is open all year, getting good photos of the vine-strangled temples without scores of tourists clamoring around on them requires a bit of good timing. Even arriving very early in the morning is no guarantee you will enjoy tranquility at the primary temple sites.

December and January are the best-weather months, but they are also the busiest as hordes of visitors and tour buses flock to see the monuments. Peak season runs roughly from December to the end of February.

The Weather at Angkor Wat

April and May are unbearably hot months in Cambodia. Avoid them unless you can handle heat and suffocating humidity as you explore the ancient temples. During these peak-heat months, you can enjoy more personal space at temples—assuming you don't mind a heat stroke or three.

To really get the most out of your three-day-pass to Angkor Wat, consider timing your visit to coincide with one of the shoulder months between the monsoon season and dry season. November and March are often good compromise months for Angkor Wat. With a little luck, you'll still have sunny days that aren't scorching hot but fewer crowds with which to contend for photos.

Monsoon rains move in around late May or June and persist until the end of October. September and October are typically the wettest months, with more than 15 inches of rainfall, while January receives the most sunshine .

December through February are dry but are among the busiest months with tourists clamoring for photos.

Other Factors to Consider

The Lunar New Year festival (which includes Chinese New Year and Tet in nearby Vietnam) causes nearly every popular place in Southeast Asia to become extremely busy for a couple of weeks as millions of people travel during days off. Accommodation prices go up, and negotiating a better deal at hotels becomes difficult. Dates change annually , but the Lunar New Year holiday hits in January or February.

Angkor Wat is open 365 days a year, from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. (closing time is only loosely enforced, so you can exit at your leisure until darkness falls).

Although the Angkor complex is open 365 days a year, it may be busier than usual on Cambodian public holidays. Many holidays are based on the lunar-solar calendar; dates change from year to year.

The Khmer New Year (coincides with Songkran in Thailand ; always mid-April) may not be the best time to visit Angkor Wat. Instead, enjoy the unique festivities.

More backpackers traveling along the Banana Pancake Trail in Southeast Asia tend to visit during the summer months while taking a break from school. You may not notice; Siem Reap is often in perpetual party mode.

Monsoon Season at Angkor Wat

Visiting during Cambodia's monsoon season presents several new challenges . Aside from the distinct disadvantage of having to explore the many outdoor temples in the drenching rain, roads can become rutted, muddy, and impassable during heavy downpours.

Remote temple sites may become difficult, if not impossible, to reach. Low areas turn into muddy pits, eliminating options such as biking leisurely around the area. Despite best efforts, getting photos of the memorable temples will be more difficult during torrential rains.

On the plus side, visiting Angkor Wat during the monsoon season means less competition for stairs and photos. You can still luck out with spurts of sunshine, sometimes consecutive days at a time, even during the monsoon season. Intense showers may only pop up in the afternoons, leaving you with plenty of time to explore each morning.

Additionally, mosquitoes are more of a problem during the wet season. Know how to avoid mosquito bites while traveling. Dengue fever is a problem in the area.

Events to check out:

  • The Khmer New Year, also called Chaul Chnam Thmey, spans three days in mid-April. This is the most popular and festive holiday across Cambodia; celebrations include parades, festivals, fireworks, and more.
  • October 15 is a national holiday commemorating the memory of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk. He was the ruler of Cambodia immediately after the country gained its independence from France.

Dry Season at Angkor Wat

The most popular time to visit Angkor Wat is during the dry season, which typically runs from November through March. These days are cooler and dry, but this is also the most popular time to visit, which means crowds.

Even though these months are technically "winter," temperatures are still quite warm. January, which is the coldest month in Cambodia, only sees lows of 70 F (21 C). However, despite the more mild temperatures, weather during this season can still be somewhat unpredictable. You should be prepared for unexpected rain showers or the occasional heatwave to roll through.

If you're planning a visit during the dry season, book your hotels and restaurants early. If you don't plan ahead, you might set yourself up for disappointment.

  • Cambodia celebrates its Independence Day on November 9. This holiday was established to celebrate the country's independence from France in 1953.
  • January 7 is another important day in Cambodian history. This day, Victory Day commemorates the end of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.

How Long to Spend at Angkor Wat

To visit Angkor Wat, you’ll have to purchase either a one-day, three-day or week-long pass.

Although travelers with tight itineraries in Southeast Asia try to squeeze in as many sights as they can in a day, remember that the Angkor complex is actually the largest religious monument in the world. It's spread over 402 hectares of jungle. You’re going to need more time than you think to not end up rushing around.

The temples are scattered all over Cambodia . If you're serious about exploring ancient Khmer ruins, plan on purchasing at least the three-day pass. Doing so is less expensive and troublesome than buying two one-day passes; you will end up wanting more than one day there.

The best time to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia is during the dry season (late November to early April), however, you may encounter hordes of tourists at this popular destination.

It's best to spend at least three days exploring Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Visiting the intricate temple buildings involves climbing many stairs and trekking into the forest. You'll have the best experience if you take your time.

Plan to wear appropriate attire when visiting the sacred temples. Clothing items include long pants that cover the knee and shirts that cover the shoulders. Skirts, short shorts, tank tops, and other revealing clothing items are not permitted on temple grounds.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia 2024

Vietnam and Cambodia are a popular combo for first Southeast Asia trips, known for Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, the Mekong Delta, and Angkor Wat, as well as their large cities and several other attractions.

Bordering each other, they share similar climate patterns: a dry season (November to April) and rainy season (May to October). Weather-wise, the dry season from November to April is undoubtedly the best time with most sunny days and cool/warm weather.

Best Weather Times for Vietnam and Cambodia

Best times for a family trip to vietnam and cambodia, the worst and cheapest times to visit vietnam and cambodia.

  • Monthly Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

For most of Vietnam and Cambodia, November to April is the best time with mostly dry and clear days. The dry season is divided into the cool season (November to February) and the hot season (March to April).

If you're sensitive to heat, you're suggested to take your trip during November–February for cool/mild temperatures.

While temperatures rise to 30+°C (86+°F) in the hot season, beach vacations and Mekong River and Halong Bay cruises are more pleasant. If you travel with us , we'll keep you refreshed and beating the heat with cold drinks from our cool box and private, air-conditioned transport for your daily private touring.

Best Times Outside the Dry Season

If your available time is outside November-to-April, you could still discover some cities of Vietnam and Cambodia with comfortable or non-rain-affected experiences.

Home to Angkor Wat, Cambodia never loses its charm even in the height of the rainy season (June to October). If possible, visit in May or late October for less rainfall.

Owing to Vietnam's elongated shape, its best times differ regionally:

  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc Island, and the Mekong Delta) : Although November to April is its best time, Mekong River cruises are still good options in the rainy season.
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, and Danang) : With its unusual short, sharp, September–December wet season, you could enjoy mostly dry weather from January through to August , which makes it ideal for summer-holiday family trips.
  • Northern Vietnam (Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and Hanoi) : You would have warm/mild weather from October to April. October is a good month to discover Hanoi and Sapa, with only-moderate rainfall and warm temperatures.

When planning a family trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, December and January are the best time for mild/warm, dry weather and atmospheric Christmas and New Year celebrations . But with those benefits come the highest crowds and costs. So, ideally, prepare for it at least 3 months in advance to secure the best deals. For a summer getaway, June is a better time to go . Lower rainfall and smaller crowds are rewards compared with July and August. More ideas on how to plan a multi-generational family trip to Southeast Asia  or how to plan a family trip to Southeast Asia >>>

Weather-wise, the rainy season (May to October) is seen as the worst time to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia. However, you could enjoy 30–50% savings during this cheapest time.

If crowds particularly bother you, then the peak season (November to April) may actually be the worst time for you, especially around the Christmas and New Year holidays. A well-organized private tour could help to avoid many crowded situations though.

An insider's tip: Travelling just before/after the high season (in May or late October) is advisable as a compromise for lower costs, smaller crowds, and lighter rainfall.

The Rainy Season in Vietnam and Cambodia

The rainy season arrives between May and October in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. The heaviest rainfall hits most areas between July and August, except for central Vietnam (with September–November peak rainfall).

During the rainy season, you might encounter typhoons, which appear more frequently around September and October in central and northern Vietnam. Your Halong Bay cruise might be canceled if a typhoon crosses the bay.

Be aware that the rainy season doesn't mean floods, storms, and consistent rainfall all the time. Instead, most rainfall comes as short afternoon downpours and rarely lasts the whole day. Thus, dry daytrips are still possible if you're flexible and well-prepared, and you would be rewarded with the lowest costs and crowding during this cheapest time to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia.

Find Your Best Month to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia...

January weather in vietnam and cambodia.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 90°F), dry

January is one of the best months to discover all the iconic attractions in Vietnam and Cambodia, with low rainfall and warm/cool temperatures.

Travelling in January, you're suggested to prepare at least 6 months in advance, particularly for New Year holidays. For family trips, early booking is better to avoid skyrocketing prices and to ensure booking family rooms.

Vietnam's New Year (Tet festival) occurs in late January or early February (Jan. 25 in 2024), limiting sightseeing, shopping, and dining access. Big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh remain visit-worthy, but the Mekong Delta closes for Tet's initial four days. Contact us for expert tips inside a customized private tour.

February Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 13°C to 21°C (55°F to 70°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), dry
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 26°C to 33°C (79°F to 91°F), very dry

Throughout Vietnam and Cambodia, the best weather continues in February with drier and warmer weather than in January. Your trip shouldn't be affected by the weather, no matter whether you visit the iconic highlights or somewhere off-the-beaten-path.

Similar to January, you should expect larger crowds and costs in February. Early booking, ideally 6 months in advance, is the key to securing your best deals.

March Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F), dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 21°C to 27°C (70°F to 81°F), dry
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 27°C to 34°C (81°F to 93°F), dry

The weather remains dry in March, and temperatures increase. If you're looking for cooler weather, northern and central Vietnam are ideal places to go. Meanwhile, the hot-season weather makes southern Vietnam and Cambodia less crowded.

As March is still the high season, high costs prevail, and long queues are the daily routine . So, a private tour is recommended to help navigate the quieter routes, avoiding crowds, and to make your trip time-smart for a comfortable experience.

April Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 22°C to 27°C (72°F to 81°F), moderate rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 23°C to 29°C (73°F to 84°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 28°C to 34°C (82°F to 93°F), low rainfall

Except for in northern Vietnam, where there is a bit more rain than in other areas of Vietnam and Cambodia, April temperatures usually get as hot as 30°C (86°F) or so. But crowds tend to be smaller.

In April, northern Vietnam is a comfortably warm paradise for outdoor adventures, such as hiking in Sapa, biking in Ninh Binh, and kayaking/cruising in Halong Bay.

For a romantic milestone trip , our well-selected small-boat Mekong cruise allows more private time for you, as it has only 12 rooms in total. For life-long memories, you deserve a special sunset balloon ride or helicopter tour over Angkor Wat .

May Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 23°C to 31°C (73°F to 88°F), moderate rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), low rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 27°C to 34°C (81°F to 93°F), high rainfall

May is a transitional month from dry to wet season in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. Throughout both countries, the daily high temperature averages above 31°C (88°F). Outdoor activities are better scheduled in the early morning and late afternoon for cooler weather.

For drier experiences, you should expect less rainfall in early May than in late May. Central Vietnam is a dry option as well, where the scenery along the DMZ (Hue south via Hai Van Pass to Phan Thiet) never disappoints.

June Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature range in Cambodia and Vietnam: 26°C to 34°C (79°F to 93°F);
  • high rainfall in all but low-rainfall central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang)

In June, most of Vietnam and Cambodia begin its hot and humid rainy season. You might encounter short intense downpours. However, central Vietnam is still in the "rain shadow".

Due to the heat and rainfall, you'd probably have the attractions mostly to yourselves, which is a particularly nice change at the iconic ones, and you'd enjoy big discounts. For families with school children, June is a better time to take a summer holiday if you can, before the local summer holiday arrives in wetter July and August.

See the itinerary ideas about 2 weeks in Southeast Asia for family trips>>>

July Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature range in Cambodia and Vietnam: 26°C to 35°C (79°F to 95°F);
  • high rainfall in all but low-rainfall central Vietnam

In July, rainfall becomes more frequent and heavier. Keeping your itinerary flexible is necessary to make the best of the weather. As we're experienced in dealing with such conditions, we always prepare a plan B for you when travelling with us .

Your trip would be less affected if you spent time in central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang), and the Mekong River cruise is a good option all year round. But book your trip at least 3 months in advance, since local (and other nations') summer holidays start in July.

August Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • high rainfall in all but central Vietnam, where it's only moderate

The heaviest rain arrives in August in northern and southern Vietnam, and Cambodia. Central Vietnam is the best option then, with various cultural experiences in Hoi An and abundant beach activities in Danang.

In Cambodia, you'll have green and lush scenery at the height of the wet season, and you'll never need to fight for the best photo spots at Angkor Wat.

Road travel can sometimes be impacted by flooding in August. As locals, our private drivers and guides always get the latest news and deal with it professionally, helping you have the best tour possible in such circumstances. Start planning your trip with our professional consultant >>>

September Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Average temperature in Cambodia and Vietnam: 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F); high rainfall throughout

In September, rainfall and temperature continue high in northern and southern Vietnam, while central Vietnam's rainy season begins. Cambodia suffers its rainiest month. Travelling in September definitely requires more flexibility.

Typhoons or heavy rains are likely to affect coastal trips to Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and Nha Trang this month . If you are a beach lover, you're suggested to visit drier Koh Samui in Thailand , or Bali in Indonesia instead.

October Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern and central Vietnam: 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F); low rainfall in the north; extremely high rainfall in the central region
  • Cambodia and southern Vietnam: 25°C to 31°C (77°F to 88°F); high rainfall to low late in the month

October is the tail end of the rainy season in most of Vietnam and Cambodia. The temperature cools towards comfortable levels too. So, October is a good month to visit Vietnam and Cambodia, especially towards November.

The only exception is central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang), which is suffers its extreme peak of the rainy season (September to November). You are likely to have persistent stormy days there, so be flexible and take advantage of indoor activities, like cooking classes, lantern-making classes, and making ao dai (Vietnamese national costumes) .

November Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 17°C to 24°C (63°F to 75°F); low rainfall
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), very high rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F); moderate rainfall

The best months to visit Vietnam and Cambodia begin again in November. The rainy season in central Vietnam continues torrentially, though.

You'll have more sunny days and cooler weather, which is great news, no matter whether you want a romantic sunset tour over Angkor Wat or to enjoy your family time on the beaches.

With the inevitable increase in crowds coming, you could enjoy a quieter time in early November.

December Weather in Vietnam and Cambodia

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): 14°C to 21°C (57°F to 70°F); dry
  • Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang): 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F); high rainfall
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) and Cambodia: 23°C to 29°C (73°F to 84°F); low rainfall

As one of the best months, most of Vietnam and Cambodia is warm/mild in December. If you're looking to escape the cold in your hometown, Vietnam and Cambodia are good options in December. Even central Vietnam's rains finally slacken off in late December, as the whole region enters the dry season.

Being the peak season, making reservations 6 months in advance is the way to get better prices and ensure availability , especially around Christmas.

best time of year to visit cambodia

It was a whirlwind across a number of cities, but a very comprehensive experience across the many sides and cultures of China. Most days had sufficient activities, but weren’t overwhelming, which was great.Across cities, we had excellent tour guides, like Kitty (Beijing), Jenny (Xian), William (Guilin/Yangshuo), Kris (Shanghai), and Tony (Yellow Mountains.)

From the time we landed in Beijing until we left, we were well taken care of. My wife and I had Lily Liu as our guide and she was amazing. From arranging visits to all the different sights, to teaching us the history, it was fantastic.

The tour was excellent. Selinda was very knowledgeable about all the aspects of our tour. Selinda was very interesting and knew so much Chinese history

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

The international border between Vietnam and Cambodia is 1,158 km in length. The border runs from the tripoint with Laos in the north then proceeds overland to the south, terminating at the Gulf of Thailand at west of Ha Tien. These two countries share five international border crossings: Bavet / Moc Bai; Kaam Samnor / Vinh Xuong (riverine border); Phnom Den / Tinh Bien; Prek Chak / Xa Xia; Le Thanh / O Yadao crossing.

Bavet / Moc Bai is the longest and most popular land border crossing so both Cambodia and Vietnam E-Visa are accepted in this point. Among these border crossings, Kaam Samnor / Vinh Xuong is the only riverine crossing which links Phnom Penh Capital in Cambodia with the Vietnamese Town of Chau Doc. In case you are on a vacation with very limited time, flying is the best option to take into account. There are many direct flights per day connecting main tourism hubs between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Overview of climate in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Climate in Cambodia

Explore Angkor Temples in a sunny and dry day.

Cambodia has the simpler weather system in Southeast Asia with two distinct seasons: dry and wet season.

The dry season in Cambodia runs from October to April/ early May, when hot wind caused by the dry north-east monsoon blowing across the whole country. With the average temperature at around 24°C-26°C, November to January are the coolest months of the year. Characterized by dry and sunny weather, low humidity and relatively cool temperatures, it is no surprise that dry season is when the number of tourists coming to Cambodia reaches its peak.

From May to early October is the wet season in Cambodia. During these months, southwest monsoon brings almost 75% of annual rainfall to Cambodia. During this rainy season, daytime temperature still remains high between 25°C and 27°C. May, June and July are the hottest months and rainfalls comes infrequently in the form of short downpours. Toward the latter months of the wet season (late July – September), rains tend to be more intense and can be heaviest along the south coast.

The weather in Vietnam can vary significantly from one region to another

Vietnam is located in the tropical area, with high temperature and high humidity all year round. With 3,260 km of coastline stretching from north to south, the weather in Vietnam can vary significantly from one region to another, which creates three different weather systems. The climate in Vietnam can be split by regions with characteristics as below:

* North Vietnam.

The North is a tropical monsoon climate, with 4 distinct seasons (spring-summer-autumn-winter), influenced by northeast monsoons (from mainland Asia) and southeast monsoons, with high humidity. Hanoi and North Vietnam (Ninh Binh, Halong Bay) has distinct summer and winter seasons. From May to September, the summer is hot and humid with highest rainfall. The cool but mostly dry winter lasts from November to January with average temperature around 12-20°C. North Vietnam experiences a quite pleasant but short fall season from late September to November when the monsoon withdraws from the region.

Rice terraces in vietnam

September – October is an ideal time to visit these mountainous regions in Northern Vietnam as the rice fields turn a golden color and ready to be harvested.

In the far north (Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Ba Be, Ban Gioc), the winter can be particularly cold and frosty at times, especially in December and January. Temperature at night can approach freezing at 0°C. However, late September – October is an ideal time of the year to visit these mountainous regions as the rice fields turn a golden color and ready to be harvested.

* Central Vietnam.

Central Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoian) has hot and dry weather from mid-January to late August when temperatures can hit around 30°C. Nha Trang, located at the far south of Central Vietnam, experiences a bit longer dry season until September with high temperatures and little rain. Rainy season in this region generally comes from late September and the rainfall reaches its peak level in October and November. Heavy storms can occur and the region is prone to flooding in this period.

* South Vietnam.

Due to less influence of monsoons and constant temperatures year round (between 25 – 35°C), South Vietnam share similar climate characters with neighboring Cambodia with two simple seasons: wet and dry. The dry season lasts from November to April and the wet season begins in May and ends in early November. June, July and August experience the highest rainfall of the year. Even rainfall is generally heavier in wet season, they come in form of short downpours and often occur in mid-afternoon.

The Best Time to Visit Vietnam and Cambodia

As you can see, Vietnam and Cambodia have all kinds of climate coordinated with the diversity of geographical features including mountains, highlands, jungles, deltas, beaches, and islands. The high season for travel in both Vietnam and Cambodia is from November until April, with dry and favorable weather conditions throughout almost main tourism destinations, except raining November in Central Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoian). Consequently, that is also when the cost of travelling tends to increase.

The travel expenses are particularly acute during special occasions, like Christmas and New Year Eve, the weeklong Vietnamese Tet Festival in late January or early February, Khmer New Year Celebration in mid-April. If traveling during this period, tourists are suggested to reserve travel services as early as possible to avoid fully booked situations.

In the spring (from January to March), North and Far North of Vietnam is really a blossoming paradise of various flowers with many colorful traditional festivals organized during New Year period. Sapa and some mountainous areas may have the high chance of snowing in winter days when temperature reaches below 0 0 C. In January, rainfall is at its lowest level although a misty fog is not unusual, especially in coastal areas and around  Halong Bay .

The Best time to visit vietnam

December to April is the best time to relax on the beaches of Central and Southern Vietnam with constant sunshine and blue skies.

Not mentioning about rainfalls and storms at times from late September to November, Central Vietnam in other months of high season (December to April) return to its glory days with constant sunshine and blue skies. This time also offers the favorable swimming and diving conditions in famous beaches and islands, such as Danang , Hoian , Nha Trang , Mui Ne .

During November – April, Southern Vietnam ladles Cambodia into the Gulf of Thailand for comfortable conditions with brilliant sunshine and extremely low chance of raining. Beach and island lovers surely have difficulty in finding the beach destinations because both countries offer many pristine white sand coastlines and islands, such as Sihanouk Ville – Koh Rong – Koh Rong Samloem in Cambodia, or Vietnam’s southern islands of Phu Quoc – Con Dao .

The Best time to visit Cambodia

Luxury hideaway in private island resorts nearby Sihanouk Ville, Cambodia.

In north east regions of Cambodia, journey time to Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri is shorter thanks to good road conditions in dry season. Sunny daytime and cooler temperatures make adventure activities like trekking into jungles or interact with wildlife in these places are much more pleasant.

Although November to January are quite cool, April is one of the hottest months in Cambodia with average temperatures of 35°C. Rather than all day visits to Angkor Temples , tourists are recommended to take early morning or late afternoon tours, and have short break by the hotel swimming pool or at air-condition restaurants or tourist venues at midday. On the other hand, the summer heat somehow helps to lower the crowd numbers at the main temples in specific time of the day.

Coming to Vietnam and Cambodia between May and early October, tourists can experience a quieter holiday. Actually, wet season is not as bad as the label implies because it depends on what you want to do in these countries. And sometimes, tourist numbers may be taken into consideration rather than the weather factor.

Angkor Thom Siem Reap Cambodia

Angkor Temples get a severe decrease in visitor numbers between May and early October due to monsoon season.

Visitors can still come to Cambodia during monsoon season when the dust is gone and the countryside returns to its lush greenery thanks to downpours. The iconic tourism site – Angkor Temples , gets a severe decrease in visitor numbers. In some extends, these spectacular temples are more stunning in wet season with fully watered moats surrounding, which provides perfect chances to snap shots of temple reflections in the water. Rainy season is also the perfect time of the year to visit floating villages in Tonle Sap Lake by boat.

During wet season, the lake swells to six or seven times its normal size of approximately 2,600 square kilometres.

On the downside, heavy rainfalls make travelling to north east regions ( Kratie , Mondulkiri , Ratanakiri ) and southern coastal destinations ( Sihanouk Ville , Kampot , Kep ) fairly difficult. “Of the beaten path” travel should be avoided, particularly in August. Remote tracks can become unpassable due to flooding of road system there. For those who are planning some relaxing days on the beach should forget Cambodia’s south coast during these months.

Instead, they can take short flight to Vietnamese beaches of Danang and Hoian , where experience sunny and dry days in summer time (from May to August).

Best infinity pool near beach in vietnam

Vietnamese beaches in Central and Southern Parts experience sunny and dry days in summer time (from May to August).

Other beach destinations in Central Vietnam like Phu Yen , Quy Nhon , Nha Trang , Mui Ne also share the same weather scene with Danang and Hoian. In general, central coast has plenty of sunshine and blue skies, average temperature is around 31°C. This time coincidence with Vietnamese school summer holiday so locals gather at Central’s beaches while the number of foreigner tourist decreases.

As mentioned earlier, the heaviest raining period in South Vietnam is from June to August. However, sightseeing trips in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta are possible because rains generally appear in short form and more likely happen in the mid-afternoon. The visit to Phu Quoc or Con Dao Island during these months should be considered seriously if you don’t want to spend all day long in your resorts.

Summer time is still the pretty good period to enjoy Halong Bay overnight cruise with outdoor activities.

North Vietnam is in its summer with plenty of hot and humid weather and rains are frequently caught in July and August. Halong Bay is prone to heavy showers at this time of the year but summer time is still the pretty good period to enjoy Halong Bay cruise with outdoor activities like swimming, kayaking and caving.

Far North Vietnam is in best trekking conditions between September and early November. Temperatures in daytime range from 15-28°C, and from 10-18°C at night time. Especially, late September to October is when mountainous areas like Sapa , Ha Giang , Mu Cang Chai start their harvesting season. Visitors cannot take their eyes off the picturesque landscape when endless terraced rice fields turn golden color.

In conclusion, the best time to visit Vietnam and Cambodia is from December to March when both countries experience dry season with less rainfall and low humidity.
