Size of the Delta Flyer

The Delta Flyer didn't belong to the original concept of Star Trek Voyager. It was created as late as in the fifth season, the in-universe rationale being that a stronger shuttle was needed to salvage the multispatial probe from the high-pressure atmosphere of a gas giant in VOY: "Extreme Risk". After the destruction of the Delta Flyer in VOY: "Unimatrix Zero I", a new and largely identical shuttle was built, the Delta Flyer II.

star trek voyager delta flyer

But how large is the Delta Flyer? The interior, taking into account the spacious cockpit and the aft compartment, appears to be almost runabout-sized. On the other hand, the Flyer still has to fit through Voyager's shuttlebay door and has to be stored somewhere inside the ship (besides the standard shuttles and Neelix's ship). After there has been some speculation among fans, Star Trek: The Magazine revealed the size of the Delta Flyer in the October 2000 issue where Rick Sternbach wrote about the design process:

"As sometimes happens with cinematic spacecraft (not to mention boats, aircraft, and cars), the Delta Flyer appeared appreciably larger inside than outside, necessitating a recalculation of the dimensions of the 'actual' Flyer from a length of about 15 meters (49 feet) to perhaps 21 meters (70 feet)."

Delta Flyer exterior and interior

The Delta Flyer interior is composed of a cockpit, a mid section and an aft section. The mid section that was never really visible in an episode probably serves to block the direct line of sight from the cockpit to the aft compartment, which are most likely two separate sets. The cockpit section is first seen in VOY: "Extreme Risk". The set remains unchanged on later appearances, with the only exception that the cockpit of the Delta Flyer II includes fewer "Captain Proton" details and more red painted areas than its predecessor.

star trek voyager delta flyer

The aft section probably did not yet exist when the Delta Flyer premiered in VOY: "Extreme Risk", but appears in various later episodes. This set too remains largely unchanged.

star trek voyager delta flyer

There are quite good cutaway plans of the Delta Flyer in Star Trek: The Magazine that comply with the real structures of the sets and show how the two fit together and into the hull.

star trek voyager delta flyer

However, there is one mismatch. The floor of the cockpit section appears to be below the red Starfleet stripe on the outer hull. But then the sloped aft hatch that is clearly visible in the side, bottom and rear views of the Delta Flyer would have to occupy most of the aft wall, considering that here the floor is still three steps lower. The aft compartment set doesn't have a sloped wall at its supposed aft end, except for the sloped grating on the port aft side visible in "Live Fast and Prosper" and "One Small Step". The Delta Flyer may be about two meters longer to fit in the aft compartment in front of the hatch or the never-seen mid section may be smaller, but it still wouldn't make much sense to have a hatch, only to block it from the inside with a more or less solid wall. It was never seen and remains a mystery how the crew would normally board the Flyer.

Another question is where the Delta Flyer's Jefferies tubes as seen in VOY: "Collective" and the escape pods from VOY: "Good Shepherd" may be located. The former uses the same set as on USS Voyager with a cross-section that just wouldn't fit into the hull. The only suited place for the latter seems to be underneath the floor of the cockpit section. But there is no external feature on the ship's bottom that looks like a hatch (which is no surprise, since the original concept probably didn't consider lifeboats).

star trek voyager delta flyer

So 15m is the original design size, but the Delta Flyer is shown at 21m on screen as dictated by the set. Looking at the cockpit, it seems to be about 7m long. The overall length of the Delta Flyer appears to be more than twice as much, rather 20m than 15m. There is only one scene allowing a comparison of the ship with crew members, when the first Delta Flyer is being built in VOY: "Extreme Risk" (re-used for "Dark Frontier"). Here it looks like the ship is some 20m long and over 5m tall.

star trek voyager delta flyer

Delta Flyer and shuttlebay door

The first remaining question is if the Delta Flyer still fits through the shuttlebay door. Rick Sternbach writes in Star Trek: The Magazine that "right now, the wingtips just clear the shuttlebay opening" (for the 21m Flyer). Is that correct? As for the height, the Delta Flyer is supposed to have a landing gear, but we may assume that it is retracted before the Flyer reaches the door (provided that the headroom is sufficient inside the shuttlebay to extend the gear there). Yet another question is if the inside of the shuttlebay is large enough to hold the ship, which is considerably larger than a standard shuttle after all. This is why I have compiled all available size figures for the Delta Flyer and for Voyager's shuttlebay door.

First of all, it is obvious that the available official dimensions for the Delta Flyer vary considerably. We shall disregard the early sketches by Rick Sternbach in the following, since they only served as guidelines for the final model - although the smaller width would be useful to fit the Flyer through the door. The Star Trek Encyclopedia III shows a flattened ship compared to the two renditions in Star Trek: The Magazine (which appears to be the actual CGI) and the Star Trek Fact Files (whose proportions almost perfectly correspond with the CGI). Looking at the available screen evidence, I am quite sure that the Encyclopedia depiction is flawed, and that the ship is actually as tall as in the other two publications. So if we go with Rick Sternbach's suggestion that the Flyer is 21m long, it would be 12.2m wide and 5.3m tall.

The dimensions of Voyager's shuttlebay diverge very much depending on what reference is used. I measured the exterior schematics in the Star Trek Fact Files , on an actual CG model by Foundation Imaging and on the Revell/Monogram scale model. The Star Trek Fact Files are not exactly known for their precision, however, this is the only reference giving us a large enough shuttlebay door. Especially its width seems to be a problem. Maybe Rick Sternbach, stating that the wingtips just cleared the shuttlebay door, actually referred to his own sketch of the Flyer on which it was 0.6m narrower than the final CGI? Anyway, as long as it's only about one meter tolerance, we may easily justify this with my limited measuring accuracy as well as with a potential small inaccuracy of the Voyager and/or the Delta Flyer schematics. Maneuvering with a Delta Flyer, which is barely smaller than the door, is not only possible because Tom is a good pilot, but also because the Flyer is likely tractored in and out anyway.

star trek voyager delta flyer

All screen evidence of the Delta Flyer leaving the shuttlebay shows significantly more clearance than expected though. The most common scene was originally created for VOY: "Extreme Risk" and reappeared in "Dark Frontier", "Thirty Days" and "Live Fast an Prosper". Here the clearance is 2m on either side, so even if we assume a 14m shuttlebay door the Flyer would be less than 10m wide and thus at most 17m long. Still a bit more clearance can be observed in a new shot in VOY: "Q2". But the CG scene from this episode is very inconsistent anyway (see below).

star trek voyager delta flyer

Any size comparison of the Delta Flyer with parts of the ship must be taken with a grain of salt anyway. In VOY: "Innocence" we can see a Type-9 shuttle exit from the shuttlebay, and the tiny craft does not appear to be much smaller than the Delta Flyer, although it should be less than half as wide.

Delta Flyer and shuttlebay interior

The still worse dilemma about the Delta Flyer is that it has to fit into the interior of the shuttlebay. The shuttlebay and cargo bay were a shared set on Voyager's Stage 9. The floorplan of the shuttlebay set shows that the main part is some 56ft (17.0m) long and 32ft (9.7m) wide.

star trek voyager delta flyer

We have seen the shuttlebay interior with people as a size reference only on few occasions, most notably in VOY: "Counterpoint" from three different angles: the starboard wall as seen from the corridor door, the forward wall from the outer gate (showing a large door and an observation gallery) and the port side with the opened door into space. The relative sizes of Janeway and Kashyk, the Devore shuttle and the interior may not be entirely consistent because of the CGI supplements. Anyway, it is the best size reference of the shuttlebay interior and it confirms that the whole room is at most 10m wide, with the outer door being 8m or less. This is just two thirds of the width of the actual door and obviously way too small for the Delta Flyer. It is interesting that this small door from "Counterpoint" has about the same proportions as that in the various outer views though. So my impression is that the shuttlebay set on Stage 9 is actually a scaled down and therefore cheaper version of what it should be according to the external views.

star trek voyager delta flyer

In VOY: "Alice" we can see the shuttlebay from roughly the same angle as in the first screen cap from "Counterpoint". The markings on the floor are somewhat different, but the structure of the wall and the inner door (on the left) are the same. The observation room from the second cap from "Counterpoint" is visible in another shot from "Alice" too. Yet, there is suddenly a partition wall somewhere in the middle of the long side of the "L". Is it really possible to divide the shuttlebay into two compartments? Or is this actually a different room, which only happens to have a gallery like the shuttlebay's?

star trek voyager delta flyer

Finally, in VOY: "Prophecy" we can see lots of Klingons inside the shuttlebay. There are various inaccuracies due to the use of CGI. At least the whole forward/inner end of the shuttlebay and the two vessels are computer-generated. The door has the wrong proportions, the Type-9 shuttle is about right and the Delta Flyer in the background is way too small here (neither shuttle exists as a full-size mock-up anyway). We know from "Counterpoint" and "Alice" that the Flyer would not remotely fit into the short side of the "L". Most likely the side walls are CGI too, and only the Klingons are real (and digitally multiplied). Apparently the whole shuttlebay has been scaled up and is more than 10m wide. Also, the horizontal trench in the struts of the side walls that used to be at about 2m height in every other episode seems to be at 3m here.

star trek voyager delta flyer

The crew always enters from the short side of the "L" from where it may be possible to access a second room beside the actual shuttlebay. I don't think the intention was to suggest that they can be combined to one, which may create a large, rectangular shuttlebay. Nevertheless, this may be considered as an option to solve the dilemma, also because of the observation from "Alice" where we could have seen a second, parallel and smaller shuttlebay. Yet, the side walls of this potential "shuttlebay 2" and of the main shuttlebay in all other episodes look quite solid (not like sliding walls), as does the wall frame around the too small space door, so it is unlikely that this is actually possible - and most importantly the exterior views show nothing like a second compartment or another door into space large enough for a shuttle.

"Q2" shows us the CGI Delta Flyer inside the shuttlebay without any people, and now there would be even enough room for two Delta Flyers in the same set that previously seemed much too small for only one. The Flyer appears to be as small as already in "Prophecy" and it has plenty of clearance on all sides when it turns around the corner of the "L" and then exits through the outer door. While we may accept that the too small shuttlebay (too small when the set is populated with crew members) is indeed large enough for the Flyer, this shouldn't go so far that the Flyer would be less than 10m long. This very scene must be disregarded altogether.

star trek voyager delta flyer

Regarding the match between the exterior and interior views of the shuttlebay, early episodes like VOY: "Parallax" didn't reproduce the look of the shuttlebay set, which arguably didn't yet exist. In later episodes a combined CGI/miniature or pure CG effect may have been used to insert the fitting interior into the shuttlebay as seen from outside. However, in VOY: "The Barge of the Dead" as well as in VOY: "Workforce" the inner door is too narrow, exactly as in the later CG-enhanced scene with the Klingons in "Prophecy".

star trek voyager delta flyer

Shuttle storage on Voyager

The ultimate question is where the Delta Flyer can be stored - and Neelix's ship, which is larger than a standard shuttle as well. While the shuttlebay itself is located on decks 9 and 10, shuttle storage can't be on the decks above or below, since one deck height is not enough and there is open space above deck 8 and below deck 11 in Voyager's aft section. So it has to be on the same decks 9 and 10, as it is shown on Voyager's MSD too. Considering that Janeway and Kashyk in "Counterpoint" and Tom and other crew members in "Alice" entered from a normal corridor at the side of the left shuttlebay compartment, there may be enough room (at least a width of about 18m) for shuttle storage in front of the shuttlebay.

star trek voyager delta flyer

It is simply impossible to keep the Delta Flyer in the entrance area of the shuttlebay, the short side of the "L", like in "Prophecy" and "Q2", even if we assume that the shuttlebay has the correct relative size to its outer appearance. The actual storage area may be located behind the inner door of the shuttlebay, underneath the gallery, even though the door looks too small on the exterior view with Neelix's shuttle. This is where the Delta Flyer may have been built and where the mysterious "room 5" may be located. The CGI of the later "room 5" differs from what we could see in "Extreme Risk" and it appears in various episodes in at least five distinct takes, each time with slight changes. We may explain away the different size in VOY: "Drive" with sliding walls. Still, the assembly hall as well as "room 5" look just too spacious for the aft end of the ship. Ultimately the presence of Irina's ship, which is a lot wider than the Delta Flyer, in "room 5" is a clear sign that we need to draw a line somewhere and ignore the most blatant size inconsistencies.

star trek voyager delta flyer

For what it's worth, the storage area of "room 5" would also be a suited candidate for the infamous "shuttlebay 2" mentioned in VOY: "In the Flesh". Rick Sternbach about "shuttlebay 2" and about the CGI renditions (posted at Starship Modeler ):

"Chalk it up to writer goofiness. The rationalization we used later was indeed that 'Bay 2' was a maintenance bay forward of the landing area. I can't say that I was ever satisfied with the CGI renditions of the shuttlebay, because it changed a lot from ep to ep, and I can only imagine that the producers were always pining for different bits to look at."

Summarizing, there is a good match between the inside and outside appearances of a 21m long Delta Flyer, except that there is no large aft hatch in the set that is visible from the outside and would be needed to board the ship. If we measure very accurately, the Flyer might scratch the edge of the shuttlebay door, but we may assume as well that there would be enough space left. The Delta Flyer, however, definitely doesn't fit into the small shuttlebay set as it could be seen seen in a few episodes. The only solution is to disregard the scales in these scenes and assume the shuttlebay set was simply scaled down to two thirds. It is also necessary to ignore shots in which the Delta Flyer itself was scaled down such as notably in "Prophecy" and "Q2". In this case it is possible that the Delta Flyer is actually 21m long, 12.2m wide, and 5.3m tall.

Delta Flyer II

The Delta Flyer II in 2377.

The Delta Flyer II first saw action when Seven of Nine 's cortical implant began to malfunction and it was necessary to infiltrate a damaged Borg ship to steal an implant from one of the many Borg corpses. Although the attempt itself proved pointless, since Seven needed a "transplant" from a living Borg, the endeavor was still an impressive demonstration. ( VOY episode : " Imperfection ")

The Delta Flyer II took part in the first Trans-Stellar Rally, where it was rigged by another competitor to explode. Its destruction was averted after the warp core was ejected into a Class J nebula , containing the antimatter explosion. It was also on this flight that Tom Paris proposed to B'Elanna Torres , and they subsequently went away on the Flyer for their honeymoon. ( VOY episode : " Drive ")

On a later mission, while crewed by Harry Kim , Seven of Nine and the Doctor , the Delta Flyer II was captured by a race at war with their holograms , or "photonics", who nearly destabilized The Doctor's holographic matrix. To save him, Seven transferred The Doctor into her Borg implants to keep him safe until they were able to send a message to USS Voyager , allowing him to control her body and experience real sensations for the first time. ( VOY episode : " Body and Soul ")

It was on a mission in the Delta Flyer II that Harry Kim , Seven of Nine and Neelix encountered a damaged ship that requested Kim become its captain until they reached their destination. The experience did not go as well as Kim had hoped (mainly because the crew turned out to be lying about the contents of their cargo), but it still taught him some valuable lessons about command. ( VOY episode : " Nightingale ")

The Delta Flyer II was used by Chakotay , Tuvok and Paris to pursue a vessel crewed by Hirogen -created holograms into the atmosphere of a Class Y planet . They disabled the vessel's shields to beam B'Elanna Torres to safety, then rescue The Doctor and surviving Hirogen Hunters. ( VOY episode : " Flesh and Blood ")

The Delta Flyer II also proved useful, albeit indirectly, as a means of rescuing the crew after they were nearly all abducted and brainwashed by a group of aliens called the Quarren . At the time of the abduction, Chakotay , Harry Kim and Neelix were using the Flyer II on a diplomatic mission to another planet , and were thus spared the attack. Following the mission, they were able to recover Voyager and The Doctor, who had remained behind and activated the newly-created Emergency Command Hologram protocols to repair the ship. With this minuscule crew, Voyager tracked down its missing crewmen and was eventually able to effect a rescue. ( VOY episode : " Workforce ")

A mission in the Delta Flyer II also proved vital in another regard; teaching Q 's son, Q (Junior) , how to take responsibility for his actions. When Q Junior stole the Delta Flyer II and tried to run away from Voyager to escape his father. Accompanied by Icheb , it was Icheb's injury that convinced Q Junior to make up for what he had done. As a result, Q Junior was able to return to the Q Continuum . ( VOY episode : " Q2 ")

The Flyer II also saw use on Voyager' s first, official, Starfleet mission for seven years; finding the lost Friendship 1 probe , launched centuries ago as a means of telling other civilizations about Earth 's culture and technology in order to announce humanity's future exploration of the galaxy . While Friendship 1 was built with the intention of spreading a message of peace, it is an excellent example of why Starfleet later established the Prime Directive . The inhabitants of the planet where Friendship 1 was discovered, had used the information it conveyed to rapidly advance their technology . This rapid advancement, specifically in antimatter technology, caused a nuclear winter and irradiated the entire surface of their planet. The inhabitants blamed humanity for the disaster, convinced that the probe had been used as a preemptive strike against them. Their fears were re-enforced when Voyager appeared to recover the probe. Tom Paris , Neelix and Joseph Carey were taken hostage by the inhabitants in an effort to force Captain Kathryn Janeway to relocate them to a new home to atone for the destruction caused by Friendship 1 . After providing medical care for a sick infant, the away team was able to convince the inhabitants that no harm had been intended, although Joseph Carey was shot and killed before matters could be straightened out. ( VOY episode : " Friendship One ")

One of the more humorous occasions where the Delta Flyer II saw use was when Paris, much to his chagrin, was forced to take piloting lessons after violating a local rule of a planet the crew were visiting for shore leave . However, due to the need to provide aid for a people with a unique way of life, Paris was forced to leave before the lesson was finished, and consequently received an automatic failure grade. ( VOY episode : " Natural Law ")

The Delta Flyer II , fighting alongside Neelix 's ship, the Baxial , proved pivotal in the defense of a Talaxian colony against the miners who wished to force the colonists out. This bought Neelix enough time to plant force field emitters to protect the colonists. ( VOY episode : " Homestead ")

The Flyer II 's last use prior to Voyager 's return to the Alpha Quadrant occurred when The Doctor was forced to steal the Flyer II and the warp core to bargain for Captain Janeway's life - after she was abducted by an alien race. With the aid of Paris and Tuvok in a shuttlecraft , The Doctor and Janeway were able to escape with the warp core . ( VOY episode : " Renaissance Man ")

In 2378 , Lieutenant Commander Tom Paris took the Delta Flyer II to Voyager to assume command and led an away team mission to rescue the missing officers. Crell Moset was captured, but the Ellis changeling escaped. ( VOY novel : Spirit Walk )

By 2381 the Delta Flyer and Delta Flyer II design had inspired Starfleet 's new heavy shuttlecraft design, the Flyer -class . ( TTN novel : Over a Torrent Sea )

Specifications [ ]

The Delta Flyer II featured fewer " Captain Proton "-inspired interfaces than its predecessor. This version of the Delta Flyer sported pop-out impulse engine thrusters, which gave the ship greater sub-light speeds. The interior was slightly re-designed with an emphasis on comfort, the dark tones of the original Flyer were replaced with a more colorful environment. The Delta Flyer II was equipped with pulse phased weapons and a duranium -enforced hull. ( VOY episode : " Body and Soul ")

Screen Rant

Star trek brings back voyager’s delta flyer & captain picard’s yacht.

Star Trek: Lower Decks' Ensign Rutherford brings back the Delta Flyer and the Captain's Yacht, two of the coolest ships in the franchise.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3, Episode 5 - "Reflections"

The mysterious origins of Ensign Samathan Rutherford's (Eugene Cordero) implant allowed Star Trek: Lower Decks to bring back two of the coolest ships in Starfleet, the Delta Flyer and the Captain's Yacht. Rutherford's implant has malfunctioned since Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1, and the Ensign's body was taken over by his previous, more aggressive and rebellious personality, which was eliminated when Rutherford received his implant. The sides of Rutherfords' psychic battle for dominance led to a spectacular race across the Romulan Neutral Zone , and the return of Star Trek: Voyager ' s Delta Flyer as well as the USS Cerritos' Captain's Yacht.

The Delta Flyer was a new shuttlecraft-sized starship unique to Star Trek: Voyager that became a signature vehicle of the series alongside the USS Voyager itself. Designed by Lt Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeil), the Delta Flyer was built as a more versatile and powerful support ship that was more maneuverable and effective than Voyager's class 2 shuttles in the increasingly hostile Delta Quadrant. Thanks to Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), the Delta Flyer was also equipped with Borg weaponry including photonic missiles. The original Delta Flyer was destroyed during an encounter with the Borg, but Voyager 's crew constructed a second Delta Flyer with even more bells and whistles. Meanwhile, the Captain's Yacht was a warp-capable support craft for the use of starship Captains that was first seen in Star Trek: Insurrection , although the USS Enterprise-D also had a Captain's Yacht.

In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 5, "Reflections," the original Rutherford tried to escape capture by Lt. Shax (Fred Tatasciore) by beaming into the USS Cerritos' Captain's Yacht. However, he was still apprehended and brought to Dr. T'Ana's (Gillian Vigman) Sickbay. In their shared psyche, the original Rutherford persona challenged Ensign Rutherford to a dangerous race across the Romulan Neutral Zone , with the winner gaining ownership of their body. Ensign Rutherford built himself a Delta Flyer for himself and simulations of his fellow Lower Deckers to pilot while the original Rutherford built a sleek, Star Trek equivalent of a Star Wars-like podracer. In the end, Ensign Rutherford's Delta Flyer won the race. It's also curious that Samanthan claimed he "always wanted" a Delta Flyer; the USS Voyager only returned to Earth a couple of years before Star Trek: Lower Decks began, but Rutherford must have quickly learned about the Delta Flyer and craved building one of his own.

Why Star Trek Rarely Uses The Captain's Yacht

The Captain's Yacht is a rarely seen vessel even though one is equipped in the USS Enterprise-E and other starships . Surprisingly, support-level starships like the California -class USS Cerritos also have a Captain's Yacht. Star Trek: The Next Generation had a Captain's Yacht docked beneath the saucer of the USS Enterprise-D all throughout the series, but it was never utilized. In truth, the Captain's Yacht has to serve a story purpose in a given Star Trek TV series or movie, and it wasn't until Star Trek: Insurrection that they could justify using the Captain's Yacht. Ultimately, the ship was destroyed when Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) piloted it in a battle against the Son'a.

Star Trek: Voyager 's Delta Flyer is a welcome sight in Star Trek: Lower Decks , and it continues the animated comedy's many shout-outs to the beloved 1990s Star Trek series. Lt. Tom Paris himself appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, and the season 3 premiere updated Trekkers on the whereabouts of Commander Tuvok (Tim Russ). In the future, perhaps Ensign Rutherford will be able to build his own Delta Flyer in real life the way he did in his mindscape, and Star Trek: Lower Decks will show the USS Cerritos' Captain's Yacht in action as well.

BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager & Delta Flyer Review

James Amey

At the start of 2022, news of new licensed Star Trek merchandise started emerging. But this wasn’t any merchandise or any brand. It was, in fact, Germany-based company Bluebrixx who had managed to secure one of Paramounts coveted Star Trek licenses. Today, we review one of their new products. This is the BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager , and the Delta Flyer sets. The company produces sets related to many Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation .

BlueBrixx is a ‘building blocks’ company. I’m quite confident in asserting that one of the most desired Star Trek collaborations in the merchandise space. Within the fandom, of course. Has been one between Lego and Paramount. While this isn’t that, after all, Bluebrixx as a brand was only founded in 2017. It does give Star Trek fans something they have been desiring for a long time. Starships that they can build with blocks that not only are compatible with Lego branded sets but are of similar quality.

star trek voyager delta flyer

Building Process and Reviewer Credentials

In this review, I will focus on the large-scale sets BlueBrixx has released of Star Trek: Voyager ‘s titular vessel and accompanying support craft. The Delta Flyer. I built these stage by stage over the course of a couple of weeks. However, a determined/passionate/bored enough fan could do this much faster!

I’ll mention that I’m also an avid Lego fan and have tackled many of their larger builds. The largest likely being the Assembly Square Modular (10255) or Daily Bugle (76178). This isn’t me patting myself on the back, but giving you, the reader, an idea of my experience with Lego sets. It should go without saying that if you don’t have any experience, you likely won’t have a great time with the larger (1500+ pieces) sets.

star trek voyager delta flyer

Building the Delta Flyer

The first set of stages is the most difficult part of any building block build. These are the ones where you spend an inordinate amount of time shuffling your bricks around, trying to find certain pieces. All while not having a strong visual idea of the scale or final appearance of the set. The BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager is 2443 for comparison.

The Delta Flyer is a 1714-piece set. These pieces are split between 5 bags, with the final bag featuring the buildable display plaque. Unlike other ships in the BlueBrixx line, the flyer doesn’t have an additional buildable display stand. However, this is unnecessary due to the landing gear design (visible in the image above but never actually seen in the show).

The bags neatly divide up elements of the hull. Bag 1 has you building the ‘floor’ of the shuttle. 2 builds the cockpit. Then three gets you started on the engines, while bag 4 finishes them. Finally, the whole build is wrapped up in bag 5.

star trek voyager delta flyer

There is a lot to love in this set. For one, it’s the only building block set produced under any brand to date of the Delta Flyer. This makes it even more fortunate that Bluebrixx placed it straight in the most detailed end of their lineup. On that note – there is a lot of detail, including things that fit the design and build that weren’t necessarily featured in the series.

For example, as you can see in the Bag 3 and 4 pictures below, buildable nacelle components fit alongside the cockpit. The medical bed seen in several episodes is fully operational and slides in and out for fans of the Delta Flyer II – yes. It includes deployable impulse thrusters!

This set is extremely high quality. I didn’t have any issues with misprints (and yes, unlike many Lego sets, all of the unique Flyer pieces are printed)! The bricks all fit together without trouble, and the design is stable. I wouldn’t give this one to your kids for a display piece, at least, even though the main window is liftable for play!

star trek voyager delta flyer

The Not-so Good

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that anything about this set was outright bad. But there are certainly a few parts of it that raised my eyebrow. Or otherwise caused frustration. The top element on the ‘frustrations’ list. Which some may not agree with. It would be that all the bricks were thematically colored (mostly various shades of grey).

While this makes for a great final piece, it made finding the needed bricks during construction much more difficult (and tedious) than with the ‘other’ brand. Said brand has caught some of its critique for its brightly colored and contrasting unseen interior elements. But they make the initial building process easier when sifting through bricks.

Then we get to the overall shape of the Flyer. While the completed set is certainly recognizable to the eye, BlueBrixx didn’t quite manage to replicate all the angles of the Flyer. The side panels along the sides of the cockpit (with the Delta Flyer lettering) are the best example of this. They spread horizontally more than the original design. This gives it an overall ‘slightly squished’ appearance.

star trek voyager delta flyer

It’s the Voyager!

The moment Bluebrixx got the Trek license and announced their initial lineup (which included a small and medium-sized Voyager). I immediately emailed them to request a large one! Less than a year from their first wave, I was delighted to see it featured alongside the Delta Flyer that was just covered in the third wave.

At 2443 pieces, it’s no LEGO Star Wars UCS Millenium Falcon (7541 pieces). If I’m being honest, though, I’m not sure if I would have found a display place for it if it was. This Voyager is already significantly larger than the 90s Playmates toy and Revell model kit. These were the two largest versions of the ship that previously made it to shelves.

A somewhat bizarre omission from the box art is that this Voyager actually has two display options. The pictured stand (which comes with many of the Bluebrixx ships) and some brick-built landing gears so you can replicate your favorite landing sequence! These are built in the eighth and final (yes, there are eight bags of bricks for this one) stage.

The great thing about the BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager is that it has a really solid construction. Much like Voyager herself! But this construction doesn’t get in the way of some solid play features. It has pivotable warp nacelles so that you can display/play with it in impulse or warp flight mode. A shuttle in the shuttle bay. The landing gears mentioned previously and the never seen on-screen Aero Shuttle!

Unlike the Delta Flyer, this set does have some stickers. However, unlike the ‘other’ brand, these aren’t your standard squares and circles that you must awkwardly line up. No, these are much more awkward but also much better. The stickers here are more like model water transfer decals. You stick them on, peel the top off, and you’re left with only the details rather than any huge surrounding transparent area that increases the risk of peeling, or that would yellow over time.

The ship also faithfully (for building bricks) replicates the curved shape of the Intrepid class. But the faithful recreation doesn’t stop there. This has some solid details. Right down to the navigation lights on the nacelles and at the aft of the ship outside the shuttle bay door. As you build, you even have fun with a few small pieces creating the ‘greebles’ of Voyager’s sensor cluster just behind the secondary deflector.

Voyager is a notoriously difficult ship to get right, to the extent that even the CG model that was built using photographs of the studio model had problems. Turns out translating that many curves always have a price, and in the case of the BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager – that price seems to be the underside of the saucer.

It’s a really big shame because it’s clear that a lot of effort has gone into this set. But when the top side is almost entirely smooth pieces, it’s incredibly jarring to have such a ‘brick exposed’ underside. Giving the appearance that the ship is almost unfinished. The differences don’t stop there, either. While the top side phaser strips are dark grey smooth flat pieces built between the layers of grey bricks. The underside’s phaser strips are flexible plastic strips that clip into place.

In terms of building structure, it’s also a strange move to have the first step be building the stand that the ship will eventually sit on. I did find it somewhat useful for storing the ship between building sessions. As somebody that likes to get their builds to a recognizable state as quickly as possible, it was an interesting delay, so to speak.

While there are parts of these designs that I don’t think would have made it past the other brick brand’s standards and stability checks. I nonetheless think that they are extremely faithful, fun builds. Not to mention that there are parts of them (the transfer stickers and the sheer number of printed parts) that are far higher quality. Putting the stickers seen in many UCS sets to shame. BlueBrixx Star Trek Voyager is a must-buy in my opinion!

Of the two models, It’s this reviewer’s opinion that the Flyer. Despite the slightly squished look is a more faithful recreation. The lack of detail/amount of exposed bricks on Voyager’s underside really takes it down a peg for me. Especially considering that I (and I expect many others) are displaying it high up.

Overall I’d score them the following:

Delta Flyer

Summary [ ]

Paris and Kim test the Delta Flyer II

Paris and Kim test the Delta Flyer

Lieutenant Tom Paris and Ensign Harry Kim are in the newly completed Delta Flyer . Paris is piloting with great speed and extreme maneuvering, coursing madly through an asteroid field . Kim nervously complains, but a grinning Paris insists that the shuttle 's capabilities must be tested fully.

A ship comes up off starboard . It pulls up alongside and begins to scan them. Paris hails and politely asks the pilot for identification. A female voice answers, but instead of identifying herself, the speaker compliments Paris on the Flyer in a manner that pleases him greatly. She invites him to race her to a comet on the other side of the asteroid field. Kim is horrified; surely he will not accept? However, Paris insists that this will be a great test for the Flyer . The vessel hares off and Paris immediately follows.

Act One [ ]

The other vessel proves even more maneuverable than the Flyer . Paris begins to lag, but his pilot's ego refuses to accept defeat so easily and he pursues her avidly. Kim, despite his trepidation, wants to see the Flyer win, now that they are actually racing the other ship. Much to Paris' delight, he really gets into it and suggests using the new impulse thrusters. A pair of six-nozzle impulse thrusters fold out from the Flyer 's stern and glow to life. The ship surges forward and passes the other vessel. Now both officers grin.

Irina

Irina the Terrellian

But then the other vessel's starboard nacelle catches fire. Paris immediately has the computer beam the pilot aboard. An alien woman materializes. Her name is Irina . Her species is called the Terrellians . They offer to take her back to USS Voyager and she gladly accepts.

In sickbay , a pleading Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres tries to get The Doctor to part with his scheduled holodeck time ration. She has successfully bartered with other crew-members for theirs, accumulating almost enough time to span a weekend that she wants to spend with Paris and she needs The Doctor's holodeck time to have enough hours. However, The Doctor is resolute, telling her that ordinarily he would happily oblige, but that he has been looking forward to his scheduled time on the holodeck so that he could take up a sport long favored by Earth MDs for centuries: golf . However, Torres doesn't give up, manipulating The Doctor to let her have his time, with a sad, disappointed look that she knows will get to him. Fortunately for her, it works and The Doctor relents.

On their return to Voyager , Ensign Kim helps Irina make repairs to her vessel. They talk about its capabilities and where she is from. Paris comes and joins the conversation. He comments that her warp drive is rather weak. She responds somewhat disdainfully that warp drive is for straight lines, not for the kind of piloting she likes. Paris, with a smile, says he totally understands. When Irina mentions the upcoming race she was practicing for, this instantly seizes Paris and Kim's attention and they can't wait to find out more.

Antarian Trans-stellar Rally Course Map

The Antarian Rally course

At a meeting with Captain Janeway , Commander Chakotay , and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok , Paris and Kim mention the race Irina was talking about. It is called the Antarian Trans-stellar Rally , which covers two billion kilometers . Paris and Kim express their desire to enter the Flyer into this race. They argue that it would be the ultimate test of ship design and piloting skills. Tuvok, as one would expect, sees no purpose in it and points out the drain on the ship's resources such an undergoing would cause. Chakotay points out that even if they were to enter, the fuel requirements of the race are incompatible with that of the Flyer . However, Paris and Kim press their case further, arguing that this is about more than just skill and victory, and that participating in it would be a chance to bolster interstellar diplomacy and make new friends; something they could never have too many of, being alone in the quadrant . The race is an attempt to commemorate and bolster the fragile peace that came after a century-long war between the species that inhabit this area. Everything this race stands for, Paris and Kim argue, are Starfleet ideals that Voyager should be supporting. As for the fuel, Irina has agreed to lend them a converter.

To the great surprise of Paris, Kim, and Tuvok, Captain Janeway not only approves, but also shows enthusiasm for the idea as a good break and an opportunity for some much deserved R&R for the crew. But, she warns them, grinning as they hurry to prepare, that now that they are in it, they are representing Starfleet and the Federation and should win and make everyone proud. The two elated officers assure her that they will be successfully coming out of this.

Paris, on his way to main engineering , stops by sickbay to inform The Doctor about this news. He finds him practicing golf putts using a beaker in place of a hole. Before he can say anything, however, The Doctor tells him that he has already approved his time off. This surprises Paris and he wonders if The Doctor already knew about the race, but The Doctor does not know of anything and just tells him that he was referring to his romantic getaway with Lt. Torres. Paris is thunderstruck because he had completely forgotten about that. He warns him to expect an emergency call from engineering, anticipating Torres' fiery temper after he tells her that he won't be able to make their date.

Arriving in engineering, he approaches Torres quietly. She is elated that he has come early, but then he despondently informs her about the race and that he committed himself to it, and can, therefore, not join her for their planned weekend together. She takes the news quietly, even though it is clear that she is quite disappointed. He remorsefully tells her how sorry he is and offers to cancel his participation in the race, but she insists that it is okay and that he should go ahead with it. Thankful, Paris leaves as she soberly watches him go.

Act Two [ ]

Torres-Considers-Breakup

Torres decides to break up with Paris

Later, Torres sits alone and forlorn at a table in the mess hall . Neelix , the chef and morale officer , approaches her and tries to cheer her up, but fails. She tells him about Paris. The Talaxian is very surprised that he forgot, considering all the efforts she made to get all those extra hours on the holodeck. He wonders why she is not talking to him about it, but she responds that he should be allowed to do what makes him happy. However, she concludes, this has made her finally see that she and Paris do not belong together. She loves him, but perhaps that is not enough. They have had much fun together, and that seems enough for him but, unfortunately, it is not enough for her. After the race, she will end their relationship.

Captain Janeway and Chakotay hold a meeting with the Antarian Ambassador , O'Zaal , in Captain Janeway's ready room . He has a very serious problem, illustrated by a message he gets during the meeting: one of the species in the race – the Aksani – wants to host the post-race ceremony, and will break the peace if refused. But it has already been agreed that another species, the Chessu , would host it. This, he tells Janeway sadly, is his problem; the peace is quite fragile, and every decision he makes regarding the race is seen as symbolic. If he makes a concession to one species, another is offended. Janeway offers a solution: Voyager is neutral territory. Nobody could object to any of the ceremonies being held on the ship, so she suggests holding all ceremonies aboard Voyager . Relieved, O'Zaal gratefully accepts.

The opening ceremony is held in the mess hall. Pilots mix and mingle while refreshments are served. Not all are interested in mixing, however. One particular individual, Assan – of a species called the Imhotep – has nothing to do with anyone. When Paris tries to introduce himself, he is coldly brushed off. Irina warns Paris and Kim about him, telling them that he was a ruthless fighter pilot during the war and is not above using questionable tactics to win. Then Irina's co-pilot Joxom comes over to the three, and Irina introduces him to Paris and Kim.

Torres goes to astrometrics and finds Seven of Nine there as usual. What is not usual is that she is involved in Voyager 's race preparation: she is analyzing the course to find ways to cut time. Torres, aware of Seven's usual attitude toward things of this sort, voices her surprise at her involvement. Seven responds that she believes her involvement would help her improve her relationship with Paris. She has learned that if she embraces some of his interests, supports him in his personal goals, they are able to function more efficiently as crewmates. This resonates well with Torres, who appears to have an epiphany.

In the shuttlebay, Paris is in the Flyer , wearing a pilot's uniform designed for the race. The starting time is at hand. He makes final preparations while he waits for Harry who is to be his copilot. He is surprised when the hatch opens and Torres comes in, wearing the same uniform. She informs him that she is replacing Kim as his co-pilot; the race is important to him, and so she wants to help him with it. He is extremely pleased. They start the engines and leave the bay to join the other waiting racers at the starting point.

Antarian Trans-stellar Rally Start Signal

Voyager starts the race

With the racers ready, on Voyager 's bridge , Ambassador O'Zaal asks Janeway to signal the start. At her command, Tuvok launches a low-yield photon torpedo , which detonates a few hundred meters in front of the starting point. The race begins and the ships hare off.

Act Three [ ]

Neelix goes to astrometrics and asks Seven, who is monitoring the race, for an update. When she tells him, he complains that her delivery is very unexciting. He shows her how to do it, activating a ship-wide comm. With great gusto and excitement, he updates the crew on the positions of the racers. All over the ship, crewmembers pause in their duties to listen, their excitement evident. Seven, incapable of purveying such excitement, leaves the update announcements to Neelix. A smiling Janeway enters and joins them.

Möbius Inversion

The Möbius Inversion

Tom Paris' skills put the Flyer in third place, behind Irina who is second and Assan who is first. Torres is happily confident that they will soon take the lead, but Paris tempers her confidence because they are about to enter a phenomenon called the Möbius Inversion , which is a small, tight wormhole with level 6 subspace distortions and gravimetric shear . As they near it, Paris points it out to her; she gazes nervously at its swirling event horizon .

Off-duty crewmembers trickle into astrometrics to watch the progress of the race on the lab's huge viewscreen , until the lab is quite crowded. Excitement is palpable. Janeway had been joined by Chakotay. Tuvok enters and gives Captain Janeway his weekly security report . The captain takes it, but tells him they will talk about it later, returning her attention to the race. Tuvok tries to press the matter, telling her that there are some things on it they should discuss, but Chakotay firmly reiterates what the captain told him.

Then the ships disappear into the Möbius Inversion. Seven informs them that the phenomenon's radiation is blocking their sensors . Thus, they have no idea who will emerge as leader on the other side; the phenomenon is certainly capable of altering positions. The uncertainty even catches Tuvok. When Janeway offers to talk about the report until the ships emerge, he asks, with permission, that it be deferred until later. Janeway smiles ironically.

Voyager crew watches Antarian Rally

Voyager officers and crew watch the race

The racers dash through the Inversion. The Flyer is still coming in third place, but Paris brings it within striking distance of the first two. Torres gets an idea on how to pass them, but Paris insists that they wait because now is not the time. But she doesn't listen and executes it, adjusting the engines and shields . The Flyer surges ahead, 'scraping' the shields of Irina's and Assan's ships, knocking both vessels out of the way. Aboard Voyager , in astrometrics, the watching crew erupts in a great cheer as they see Flyer emerge first from the Inversion. Neelix announces the change ship-wide; the rest of the crew joins in the cheering.

On the Flyer , however, Paris is very displeased that Torres did not listen to him. She protests that she saw the chance and took it, but he firmly insists that he will do the flying from now on because he is the pilot. Just then, an announcement comes in: there has been an accident. All racers are instructed to stop and hold their positions. Torres looks rather guilty, thinking that perhaps her action caused the accident. They find out that the accident happened to Irina's ship and that she is fine, even though Joxom, her co-pilot, suffered burns from an exploding console. He is treated in Voyager 's sickbay, as Irina, Assan, Paris, and Torres report on the accident to Janeway and O'Zaal in the briefing room. Irina angrily blames Assan's aggressive "scraping" of her shields as the cause of the accident. Assan does not deny it, but he also could not care less, responding that the only thing he is guilty of is coming up second place, something which he intends to rectify in the next leg. Torres admits that she may also have caused the accident by her "scraping" of Irina and Assan, but Paris covers, saying that everyone was flying aggressively; "scraping" was inevitable in such a confined space. Irina quickly absolves them of responsibility.

Tuvok enters. He has news that change the nature of the incident entirely: he has examined Irina's vessel and found evidence of tampering. A component was rigged to explode, thus making it obvious that this was no accident, but sabotage. This is very unpleasant news for O'Zaal, who sees this as a possible terrorist action aimed at reviving hostilities and ending the peace.

Act Four [ ]

Janeway, however, is not so alarmed, not believing that one act of sabotage could threaten the peace. But O'Zaal informs her that this was only one of a series of threats of violence that have been received. These threats come from those opposed to the peace, such as arms dealers , isolationists and political extremists. He sadly makes a decision to call off the race, stating that it is not worth risking lives and the peace over. Irina objects, stating that if he does that, then the opponents win; a view shared by Assan and the Starfleet officers. Seeing the consensus, O'Zaal, therefore, decides that the race will continue. However, since Voyager is neutral, he tells Captain Janeway, that he understands if she wants to withdraw. But Janeway says that she has no intention of taking the Flyer out of the race.

In the shuttlebay, Paris and Torres prep the Flyer . Kim comes to see them. With Joxom injured, Janeway has allowed him to serve as Irina's copilot. The announcement for the racers to take their positions is heard, and Kim leaves to rejoin Irina. The ships fall into position and the race resumes.

On the Flyer , Torres thinks heavily about Kim and Irina. Kim told them that he and Irina seem to be hitting it off quite well and really getting along, without even trying. This now has Torres considering herself and Paris and their complicated relationship in the light of her decision to break the relationship off because she believes that they do not belong together. She cannot help but mention the ease of how well Kim and Irina get along together to Paris, though she is unwilling at this time to discuss their own relationship. But Paris, on hearing her, immediately senses that she might mean something else. He asks her if she is talking about them, but she quickly ends the conversation, suggesting they concentrate on the race.

Irina and Kim begin to fall behind. Kim reads malfunctions in the EPS relays even though he checked them thoroughly the night before. He suggests trying to reroute power through the impulse manifold , but Irina insists that he not do this, pushing him back in his seat. Kim, confused, asks her why he should not and she gives him all manner of weak, nonsensical reasons.

Kim is even more confused now, wondering why she does not want to win. He tells her that it appears that for every solution he comes up with, she finds a reason to reject it. Then his console beeps – the same one Joxom had been sitting at. It is an overload; the console is about to explode, but Kim manages to leap away before it does, escaping injury. He turns to Irina, commenting on the coincidence, pointing out that this is the second time this console has exploded.

Irina holds weapon on Kim

Irina holds Kim at gunpoint

And finds her leveling a hand weapon at him.

Act Five [ ]

Kim is shocked; why, he asks her, did she sabotage her own ship. She says nothing. He suddenly dashes to a button and hits it, causing the ship to shake a bit and throw Irina off-balance. Then he rushes her. A struggle ensues, which he wins, relieving her of the weapon. Holding her at bay with it, he tries to contact Voyager but fails. He decides to wait, keeping the weapon trained on her. She asks Harry to check on how the race is going. Although a bit perplexed, Harry does so and confirms the Flyer is still in the lead.

On the Flyer , Paris again returns to the subject of his and Torres' relationship, persisting despite her attempts to change the subject. Finally, she speaks up, saying that she thought that if they could do something together that really interested him, it would help their relationship. This surprises Paris, who wasn't aware that it needed help.

This is part of the problem, she stresses. She finally tells him what she told Neelix earlier, namely that merely having a good time is not enough for her. To her great surprise, he cuts the engines.

Kim and Irina see the Flyer stop. Irina shows inordinate interest in how far they are from the finish line. This makes Kim very suspicious. He demands to know why she is so interested in this. Then he realizes that whomever she is with planned an attack. He tells her that there are hundreds of innocent people there. Irina reveals herself to be one of the isolationists who oppose the peace. She and her group do not believe in the mixing of the species that the peace has brought; by destroying it, they hope to end this intermingling. Kim recalls that it was Irina who told them about the race and gave them the fuel converter so that they could participate. A flash in her eyes on his saying this reveals the plan: the converter is the bomb and she and her terrorist group intend to use the Flyer to deliver it upon crossing the finish line.

But, with the comm down, there is no way to warn Paris. Unless...

Kim gets an idea. With the weapon still trained on Irina, he begins tapping a button on a console with his free hand.

Paris-and-Torres-Discuss-Relationship

Paris and Torres discuss their relationship

Assan speeds past the Flyer . Torres agitatedly asks Paris why they have stopped. He looks at her, telling her that if they have a problem, they are going to resolve it, here and now. Frustrated, she tells him that she never wanted him to throw the race, knowing how much it meant to him; however, Paris insists that she means more to him than anything else. B'Elanna is shocked, not knowing he felt this way. He responds that he never told her because he did not think she would appreciate the "mushy stuff". He sees that this assumption was not correct. He kisses her, whispers endearments... and prepares to pop a certain question.

He is interrupted by beeping from the console. Torres checks it; it is a modulating pulse from Irina's ship, but the pattern of the beeps is familiar to Paris. He suddenly realizes that it is a Morse code , which he taught Kim as part of their " Captain Proton " adventures. The message is a warning about the converter and that it must be ejected at once. Torres checks the converter, which is leaking veridium isotopes. Within a minute, the leak will breach the warp core , causing a huge explosion. She discovers the sensors were tampered with, which is why the computer didn't notice this earlier. She also notices the subroutines for the ejection system aren't working. She quickly works to fix them, as Paris re-engages the engines and hurries the Flyer toward a nearby nebula , which will contain the explosion. Along the way, Paris finally asks her to marry him, to her shock, considering the timing. They reach the nebula and Torres manages to get the ejection subroutines back online and eject the core while Paris takes the Flyer far enough away from it.

Paris-Torres honeymoon

"Just Married"

However, he cannot get the Flyer far enough and it is caught by the shock wave . On Voyager , a disappointed Janeway and crew witness Assan passing the finish line first, winning the race. Then the shock wave from the explosion rocks the ship, and Janeway orders a report from the bridge . Tuvok informs her of an antimatter explosion. The Flyer , scorched from the explosion, hangs dead in space. But aside from the burns, it is undamaged. Torres comments on how they have likely lost, but Paris says that depends on how she answers his marriage proposal. The two kiss.

Afterwards, Voyager 's crew are invited to join in a post-race celebration. Meanwhile the repaired Flyer cruises leisurely while Paris and Torres are aboard finally enjoying their delayed vacation, sipping champagne and discussing if B'Elanna will take Tom's name... or possibly Tom could take B'Elanna's. A ring is on her finger. The Flyer trails lines of storage containers, tied together, with "Just Married" painted on the stern .

  • This was the second marriage on Star Trek between main characters. The first was between Worf and Jadzia Dax . Worf and Torres are also both the only main characters who are also Klingons. The marriage between Miles O'Brien and Keiko occurred on Star Trek: The Next Generation when O'Brien was not yet a main character. Odo and Lwaxana Troi were also married during " The Muse ". Deanna Troi and William T. Riker were later married in Star Trek Nemesis .
  • During the episode, B'Elanna Torres irritably tells Tom Paris that he was expelled from Starfleet Academy . This is a continuity error, as Tom Paris graduated from the Academy. However, this may have been confusion with the writers combining the history of Nicholas Locarno (who did get expelled during the events of the TNG fifth season episode " The First Duty ") and Tom Paris, both played by the same actor, Robert Duncan McNeill .
  • Paris states that the race course is 2.3 billion kilometers in length and must be navigated at sub-light speeds. At light speed it would take just over 2 hours to navigate.
  • Irina says "warp's fine if you like going fast in a straight line," which would seem to support the warp manoeuvring maxim " Faster than light, no left or right " established in " Fury ".
  • Voyager uses a photon torpedo in this episode, three having previously been used in " Fury " (although in that episode, the depicted torpedoes are shown to have been used in the past). This brings the total number of torpedoes confirmed to have been used by Voyager over the course of the series to 67, a total which exceeds the irreplaceable complement of 38 that had been established by Chakotay in the first-season episode " The Cloud ".
  • Paris says of Kim's interest in Irina, "she's not a Borg, she's not a hologram, and she's not dead," referring to the events of " Waking Moments ", " Alter Ego ", and " Ashes to Ashes " respectively.
  • One of the spectator starships at the finishing line was previously used as the U.A.P. Icarus in Jonathan Frakes ' Star Trek spoof Star Patrol! .

8 Alpha Quadrant Things Star Trek: Voyager Found In Delta Quadrant

  • Star Trek: Voyager finds familiar things from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant, sparking important questions and connections.
  • Encounter with Ferengi negotiators leads Voyager crew to stop their interference in a pre-warp civilization for profits.
  • Janeway and crew discover humans abducted by aliens in the 1930s living in the Delta Quadrant, including Amelia Earhart.

For a show with the conceit of being so far from home, Star Trek: Voyager found a surprising number of things in the Delta Quadrant that originated in the Alpha Quadrant, including several from Earth itself. The USS Voyager, commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis raider Val Jean were both brought to the Delta Quadrant in 2371 by the Caretaker (Basil Langton). After Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array to save the Ocampa , Voyager and the Val Jean were left without a ticket back to the Alpha Quadrant, and banded together to make the long journey.

Finding something familiar in an otherwise totally alien corner of the galaxy brought a sense of familiarity to the USS Voyager crew and viewers at home alike, but the presence of something from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant inevitably raised important questions , like how familiar people and objects traveled 70,000 light years from home in the first place, and whether the find could lead Captain Kathryn Janeway towards a quicker path home to Earth.

Star Trek: Voyagers 20 Best Episodes Ranked

A pair of ferengi negotiators, arridor and kol, star trek: voyager season 3, episode 5 "false profits".

The USS Voyager encounters a pair of Ferengi negotiators, Arridor (Dan Shor) and Kol (Leslie Jordan), who claim to be the prophesied Great Sages of the Takarians, a society with Bronze Age level technology. The Ferengi have no Prime Directive to deter them from interfering with the Takarians' development , so they're performing "miracles" with a standard replicator to reap the monetary benefits of the Takarians' worship. Voyager's crew know the Ferengi reputation well enough to know they're no Sages, so they must figure out how to put a stop to Arridor and Kol's grift.

"False Profits" serves as a Star Trek sequel episode to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 8 "The Price", as Voyager catches up with Arridor and Kol (formerly played by J. R. Quinonez) seven years after their Delta Quadrant arrival. The Ferengi took a test flight through the supposedly stable wormhole near Barzan II, which was supposed to emerge in the Gamma Quadrant, but instead stranded the Ferengi in the Delta Quadrant, where they made the best of their situation as only Ferengi can.

Star Trek: Voyager Season 3, Episode 23 "Distant Origin"

"Distant Origin" opens on Forra Gegen (Henry Woronicz), a scientist who discovers that his people, the Voth, share certain genetic similarities with the humans aboard the USS Voyager. While this confirms Gegen's theory that the Voth are the descendants of a species brought to their homeworld millions of years ago , religious leader Minister Odala (Concetta Tomei) refuses to accept the truth. Even with Commander Chakotay present as a living specimen of humanity, Odala pushes Gegen to recant, because Gegen's theory goes against the Voth Doctrine that keeps Odala in power.

After meeting Gegen's assistant, Tova Veer (Christopher Liam Moore), Janeway and the Doctor use the holodeck as a research guide to extrapolate how hadrosaurs might look in the 24th century if they'd been able to evolve into a humanoid form with comparable intelligence. The result resembles Veer, so Janeway and the Doctor conclude, like Gegen, that the Voth evolved from hadrosaurs into a highly advanced species on Earth , then fled to the Delta Quadrant in spacefaring vessels instead of being wiped out with the other dinosaurs.

The Friendship One Probe

Star trek: voyager season 7, episode 21 "friendship one".

By Star Trek: Voyager season 7 , the USS Voyager is in regular contact with Starfleet Command, and Starfleet gives Voyager a mission to retrieve a 21st-century Earth probe, Friendship One . The probe proves difficult to find, but once discovered on an alien planet suffering devastating climate collapse, the implications of Friendship One's launch become clear. Besides the irreversible damage to the planet's climate, the inhabitants are all suffering from radiation sickness, and bear understandable hostility towards Earth, because the aliens believe humans orchestrated their destruction with the Friendship One probe.

The United Earth Space Probe Agency was one of the early names for the organization the USS Enterprise belongs to in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Charlie X".

Friendship One was launched in 2067 by the United Earth Space Probe Agency with the intention of making friends with whomever found it, as the name implies. Although Friendship One, the 400-year-old Earth probe, traveled for centuries carrying messages of peace, musical recordings, and ways to translate languages, the people who discovered Friendship One in the Delta Quadrant took a greater interest in the antimatter it used to travel across space. Without the proper knowledge of its use, antimatter proved devastating to the planet and its people, resulting in death and disease for generations.

Dreadnought, a Cardassian Missile

Star trek: voyager season 2, episode 17 "dreadnought".

The USS Voyager discovers a dangerously powerful, self-guided Cardassian missile in the Delta Quadrant, which Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) recognizes as one nicknamed "Dreadnought" . When B'Elanna was with the Maquis, Torres had actually reprogrammed the missile herself, with the intention of turning the Cardassians' own weapon against them. Without a Cardassian target in sight, the artificially intelligent Cardassian Dreadnought targets a heavily-populated Class-M planet , Rakosa V. B'Elanna determines she must be the one to keep Dreadnought from hurting anyone else, and boards the missile to convince it to stand down.

While no concrete reason is given for exactly how the Dreadnought wound up in the Delta Quadrant, its last known location in the Alpha Quadrant was the Badlands, the same rough patch of space where Voyager and the Val Jean, Chakotay's Maquis raider, fatefully met. Because of this, Torres theorizes that Dreadnought arrived in the Delta Quadrant the same way that Voyager and the Val Jean did , courtesy of the Caretaker.

Star Trek: Voyagers BElanna Is More Klingon Than TNGs Worf Ever Was

A klingon d-7 class cruiser, complete with klingons, star trek: voyager, season 7, episode 14 "prophecy".

The USS Voyager certainly never expected to find a Klingon ship in the Delta Quadrant, but more surprising is the fact that the crew of the Klingon D-7 Class Cruiser believes their savior, the prophesied kuvah'magh, is aboard Voyager . Janeway assures the Klingon captain, Kohlar (Wren T. Brown), that the Federation and Klingon Empire have been allies for the past 80 years, and offers Voyager's own half-Klingon, Lt. B'Elanna Torres, as proof their societies are working together now. The kuvah'magh is Torres' unborn daughter, who does save the Klingons, but not the way they expected.

Centuries ago, Kohlar's great-grandfather set off on a quest to find the kuvah'magh, and the Klingon D-7 Cruiser became a generation ship that is now crewed by the descendants of its original crew . The quest begun by Kohlar's great-grandfather brought Kohlar and his crew to the Delta Quadrant after four generations of searching. Whether B'Elanna's child is actually the kuvah'magh or not, Kohlar desperately wants the baby to be their savior, so that his people may finally rest.

Amelia Earhart

Star trek: voyager season 2, episode 1 "the 37s".

The discovery of a 1936 Ford truck, seemingly disconnected from any parent vehicle, leads the USS Voyager to a nearby Class-L planet, where they find eight humans who have been in cryo-stasis since they were abducted by aliens in the 1930s. Among them are one of Janeway's personal heroes, legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) , who disappeared without a trace while attempting to fly around the world, and Earhart's navigator, Fred Noonan (David Graf). Earhart and the other preserved humans are known by the planet's inhabitants as "The 37s", and revered as sacred.

Originally thought to be aliens, the natives of the unnamed planet are the descendants of humans. A species called the Briori abducted the natives' ancestors, along with Earhart and the other 37s, from Earth centuries earlier , and took them to the Delta Quadrant. Once held as slaves, the humans who weren't in stasis revolted to free themselves from the Briori, and developed a thriving, Earth-like civilization in the Delta Quadrant. Voyager's crew consider staying with the humans in their little slice of home, while Janeway also offers a ride back to Earth to anyone who wants it, including Amelia Earhart.

The USS Equinox

Star trek: voyager season 5, episode 26 & season 6, episode 1 "equinox".

The crew of the USS Voyager believe they're the only Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant until they find the USS Equinox, five years into their journey home. Captain Rudolph Ransom (John Savage) and the Equinox crew have had a harder time in the Delta Quadrant than Voyager, with more damage, fewer starting resources, and fewer opportunities to make friends along the way. Ransom's survival tactics include sacrificing innocent nucleogenic life forms for a more efficient form of fuel, which Janeway finds hard to stomach, and decides that Ransom needs to be held accountable for defying Federation ideals, regardless of how badly the Equinox is damaged.

Although Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) suggests that the Equinox might be in the Delta Quadrant on a rescue mission to find Voyager, the USS Equinox's specs don't fit the profile of a starship that would be assigned to a long-range mission. The explanation of how the Equinox arrived in the Delta Quadrant in the first place seems fairly simple, because Captain Ransom tells Janeway that the Equinox was also abducted by the Caretaker , just like Voyager, but the Equinox has only been in the Delta Quadrant for 2 years, and Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array 5 years earlier.

Seven of Nine

Debuts in star trek: voyager season 4, episode 1 "scorpion, part 2".

When Captain Kathryn Janeway allies with the Borg in order to secure safe passage across Borg space, Janeway refuses the cursory assimilation that the Borg want to use to communicate with Janeway and Voyager's crew, and instead requests a speaker for the Borg, citing the existence of Locutus (Patrick Stewart) as precedent. Seven of Nine , Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01, is selected as the Borg drone to act as liaison between the Collective and Voyager, likely because Seven of Nine had once been a member of Species 5168, like most of Voyager's crew -- in other words, human.

Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey.

After Seven's link with the Collective is severed, more information about Seven's human origin comes to light. In Voyager season 4, episode 6 "The Raven", when Voyager nears the Hansens' ship, the USS Raven, memories of Seven's early life surface, revealing that Seven had been six-year-old human Annika Hansen , the daughter of Magnus Hansen (Kirk Baily) and Erin Hansen (Laura Stepp), Federation scientists who were studying the Borg when they were assimilated. Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey, showing the Raven arriving in the Delta Quadrant by following a Borg Cube through a transwarp conduit.

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Treks Delta Quadrant

Star Trek: Voyager links back to the greater Star Trek universe with people and starships from the Alpha Quadrant. Connections to the familiar were especially important early on, because Voyager 's place in the Star Trek franchise was established and aided by the legitimacy these finds offered. Later, when the USS Voyager used the Hirogen communications array to communicate with Starfleet Command, links back to the Alpha Quadrant were plentiful again, not only to prove that the USS Voyager was closer to home, but to help Star Trek: Voyager maintain connections to Star Trek and carry the franchise in its final years.
