What is a cruise card?

We take all the stress out of paying your bill with cashless cruising! All onboard expenses are charged to your personalised cruise card, allowing you to sign for all your onboard purchases. Your cruise card also acts as your room key plus security pass to leave and re-board the ship at ports of call.

You can charge all onboard expenses to your Cruise Card by:

  • Linking your credit or debit card to your Cruise Card. We accept Visa, MaterCard and American Express. You can link your card when you check-in at the terminal. By electing to use your credit or debit cards, you are automatically registered for Express Check-Out. This means there is no need to visit Reception to settle your account. An itemised statement will be delivered to your room on the morning of disembarkation. Too easy!
  • Depositing cash onto your Cruise Card at Reception onboard or using the Cash Kiosks onboard
  • Transferring funds from your bank account to your Cruise Card using the Cash Kiosks onboard

Please note that the currency used onboard is Australian dollars (AU$).

How Do You Pay For Things On A Cruise?

This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..

When you cruise, a lot of things on board are already included in the price, including your room, your food (in certain restaurants), and the live entertainment.

But there are also some things that cost extra – such as your drinks (unless you’ve booked an all-inclusive cruise , or one with a drinks package), speciality restaurants, purchases at the stores etc.

Front Desk on a cruise

If you’re a cruise novice, you might be wondering how you pay for everything? And that’s what this guide will clear up.

How do you pay for on-board cruise purchases?

Everything you pay for onboard a cruise is added to a cruise account, usually using your cruise card. This card is your room key, but it also serves as your payment card during the ship. Everything is added to an account, which you then have to pay off on the last morning of your cruise.

However, to be able to do that, most cruise lines will ask you to either prepay an amount in cash to fund your spending, or you’ll be asked to link a debit or credit card to your cruise account. And when you do, the cruise line may put a hold on your account until you’ve paid off the bill you rack up during your cruise.

The policy varies by cruise line – let’s take a look at the major cruise lines and how their cruise accounts work:

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean cruise card

Royal Caribbean will ask you whether you want your SeaPass account to be linked to a debit or credit card, or if you want to use it as a cash account.

If you choose to use it with a card, you’ll add the card when you check-in, and then daily holds will be placed on the card. The money will then automatically be taken from your card shortly after you disembark.

If you choose cash, you don’t have to prepay, but you will be asked to settle your account on the ship before you disembark.

Read Royal Caribbean’s policy here.

Carnival cruise card

Carnival’s Sail & Sign Onboard Account works in a similar way to Royal Caribbean’s, but with a few differences. Again, you can choose whether you want the account to be linked to a card or to cash, but there’s also the option of using traveller’s cheques.

If you use a card, an initial hold will be placed on the card even before you’ve spent anything – $100 for cruises up to 6 nights, and $200 for longer cruises. Then as you spend on the ship, more holds will be added to your card.

The main difference with Carnival is that if you choose cash (or traveller’s cheque) you need to prepay. You have to visit Guest Services on the first day of your cruise to add your money otherwise you can’t use the account.

If you have any money left at the end of the cruise, it will be refunded to you as a cheque within 7 days, unless it is lower than $10 – in that case, it is donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a charity the cruise line works with. You can also ask for your refund in cash at the Guest Services desk if you prefer.

Princess Cruises

princess ocean medallion

The Princess Cruises’ onboard spend policy is very close to Carnival’s – unsurprising really since they’re part of the same cruise parent company.

You can choose to pay by card, cash or traveller’s cheque, but for the latter two you will need to prepay. There is one key difference – you have to deposit a minimum of $300 at the start of your cruise if you want to use those options with Princess.

It’s also worth noting that the policy doesn’t mention charity donations for small amounts left in the account – that’s specific to Carnival.

With Princess, you don’t have to use a card. You instead get an Ocean Medallion , which you can wear in a lanyard or a bracelet, and that works in the same way for paying for items and opening your stateroom.

You can buy this lanyard with the medallion holder here .

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruise Card

P&O Cruises has a different policy – with P&O you have to register a debit or credit card to your account, otherwise, you won’t be allowed to board the ship.

However, you don’t have to then use that card to pay for your account – if you prefer, you can visit Guest Services and use cash to clear the account on the last day.

But the card is a guarantee so that, if you don’t pay it off yourself, it will be charged automatically.

At the start of your cruise, £50 is authorised as a hold on your account.

One thing that’s important to note – if you book a long cruise with P&O Cruises (over 28 days) then your account is settled at the midpoint of the cruise, and then again at the end. And for world cruises, it is settled every two weeks.

Read P&O Cruises policy here.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruise Card

MSC Cruises are a lot more laid back than other cruise lines when it comes to your onboard spend account – though that doesn’t mean you can get away without paying.

It does mean that you can board the ship without registering a card, and you don’t need to rush to Guest Services to prepay in cash.

In fact, you have until 11 pm on the second day of your cruise to register a card, or deposit cash. Until then you’ll be able to spend a small amount until your cruise card is declined.

MSC Cruise card activation point

The cruise line has kiosks you can use to automatically register a debit or credit card too, making it even quicker than queuing for Guest Services. You’ll need a PIN if using a debit card.

Read MSC’s policy here.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line cruise card

Disney Cruise Line has a similar policy to P&O Cruises – you have to pre-register a card before you can board the ship.

But then, once you have, you can choose how you want to clear your account – you can let the card be charged automatically, or you can visit Guest Services to pay it off in cash. You can also use traveller’s cheques in US dollars, and you can even use Disney Dollars.

Read Disney’s policy here.

Can you use a debit card on a cruise?

You can’t use a debit card on a ship to pay for items – everything has to be paid onto your onboard account. But you can use a debit card instead of a credit card to link to your onboard account – the money will be taken from your debit account at the end of the cruise.

All cruise line purchases on a ship are done using the account – it keeps things simple for the cruise line and helps them track what guests are spending money on. You can view your account at any time using the cruise line’s app or by visiting Guest Services, while many also let you check your balance through the TV in your stateroom.

cruise line app

Credit and debit card holds on a cruise

This is a really important point for new cruisers – something I’ve mentioned above but that needs a little more explaining.

During your cruise, you won’t always be charged for exactly how much you’re spending on the ship. Instead, the cruise line will often charge hold amounts to cover your spending.

This is just to make sure that there’s enough in your account to cover your bill when it’s time to settle your account. The money isn’t officially taken from you, but it’s set aside by your bank or card provider.

If you don’t have enough money in your bank account, your cruise card will stop working and you’ll be required to head to the guest services desk to link a different bank card to your onboard account.

Then when your cruise bill is settled, these holds are released. However, they can take time for the holds to be released, sometimes up to 28 days. So you’ll pay off your account, but you’ll still have a reduced available balance on your card until those holds clear.

Cruise lines don’t have the power to cancel a hold, but if you’re concerned about the length of time a hold is on your account, you can try speaking to your card provider – they may be able to remove them for you once the cruise is done.

credit card hold

Do you need cash on a cruise ship?

Strictly speaking, you don’t need cash on a cruise ship. All onboard purchases are made using your onboard account, and then cleared at the end of the cruise, which you can do with your card. Some people choose to take cash for tips, or to spend while visiting ports.

It’s up to you whether you take cash with you. For your spending account most people use a debit or credit card, so cash isn’t essential.

And when it comes to spending in port, you might want to take some local currency with you, but you can also get it on the ship if you want, to save any effort beforehand – though the exchange rates may be better if you get your cash before you sail.

When it comes to tips, cruise lines will now charge you gratuities as a set price. And while you can have those removed, if you’d prefer to take cash on to tip the crew, that’s not a good idea because there are crew members behind the scenes who also rely on gratuities.

Read more: Can You Refuse To Pay Gratuities On A Cruise?

Some people like to take small amounts of cash onto a ship, for ‘extra’ tips to reward drinks servers or crew delivering room service. This isn’t essential but it can sometimes help you to get (slightly) preferential service.

cash and passport

What currency should I take on a cruise?

The currency you take on your cruise depends on whether you’re using the cash to clear your onboard account, and where you’re sailing. For onboard accounts use the main currency for the cruise line (usually USD), otherwise try to take the currency for the ports you’re visiting.

Most cruise lines use US dollars as the onboard currency, and while they may accept other currencies, it’s easiest to take the right one with you.

P&O Cruises, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Ambassador Cruise Line and Marella Cruises all use Pound Sterling, so take that with you if you want to use cash on those ships to clear your account.

Costa Cruises use Euros, and MSC Cruises will use Euros on Mediterranean cruises, but will typically accept US dollars.

For almost all other cruise lines, it’s best to take USD. The only exception would be select ships sailing from Australia, where Australian dollars are used.

Do you pay per person or per room on a cruise?

Every person on a cruise has their own onboard account for spending. You can choose to register a different card per person, or just assign one card to the whole room. But to monitor your account, you will need to check each person’s account and add up the total as you cruise.

Most of the time, people will link just one card to all party members in their cabin, but you don’t have to – you can link different cards if you want to. Everyone has their own account, which is obviously really handy if you’re cruising with friends instead of family.

Just be aware that kids can use their card to pay for things – so make sure they know not to take too many liberties if you give them some independence!

And don’t worry about them buying things they legally can’t – it’ll be flagged if a child tries to buy an alcoholic drink and the crew will refuse to serve them. No need for ID checks at bars since the cruise card flags it automatically.

What is the best way to pay on a cruise ship?

Since everything on a cruise ship is charged to your account, the best way to pay ultimately depends on your own preference.

Some people prefer the convenience of paying with their card, since it means not having to take cash onboard. But remember that you may end up having holds on your account for up to 4 weeks after you’ve sailed, which can be frustrating.

And if you use cash to preload your account, you have to then go and wait in line to get a refund, or wait for a cheque to turn up at your door. So there are pros and cons to both approaches.

When you’re on a cruise, you’ll use neither – you pay for everything using your room card, and then clear the account at the end of the sailing. You can choose whether to use a card or cash to pay that balance, and some cruise lines insist on having a card registered before you sail.

The amount of cash to bring on a cruise varies. If you’ve prepaid gratuities and are paying for purchases onboard, you’ll only need cash for your port visits. Otherwise, check how much you think you’ll spend on drinks and speciality dining before you sail.

It’s important to keep tabs on how much you’re spending on your cruise – because you’re not using your debit or credit card, or cash, while you sail it can be easy to rack up quite the bill.

While paying with your cruise card is really convenient, it does make it simple to spend a lot too. So make sure you’re checking your account regularly. It’s a good idea to look at drinks packages and other offers you can take advantage of, so that you can pay as much off in advance as possible.

If you like to use a credit card for purchases and also like to cruise at least once per year, I would suggest that you look into the Carnival Mastercard . When you use it, you’ll get points that you can use to buy perks for your cruise.

What to Expect on a Cruise: Onboard Spending

cruise card p&o

What is not included in my cruise fare?

On most cruise ships, crew gratuities, shore excursions, spa treatments, casino play, internet and purchases in the onboard shops will all be additional costs. Expect to pay extra for certain restaurants and food items, including room service on some cruise lines, special menu items like surf 'n' turf or a la carte snacks like pastries and sushi. Alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees, bottled water and freshly squeezed juices all come with a price.

There are fees for accessing some areas of the ship, including limited-access sundecks and some spa pools. Services like laundry and dry cleaning, baby-sitting, baby care items ordered in advance, and some fitness classes may also show up on your bill as extras. And while your cruise fare includes most entertainment, arcade games and selected shows and entertainment or onboard activity experiences carry an additional cost.

As a reminder, meals in the main dining room and buffet, water and juice from buffet or pool-area dispensers, select fitness classes and use of the gym, kids and teens facilities, some onboard workshops and seminars, the main pools, most entertainment and your room are included in the price you pay for your cruise.

Select cruise lines -- mostly luxury -- are more inclusive; your cruise fare might cover excursions, specialty meals, most drinks (excepting the priciest wines and liquors), gratuities, Wi-Fi and more.

What can I prepay?

Several additional-cost elements of your cruise experience can be paid for before you get on the ship. Crew gratuities can be paid up front, rather than tacked on to your account at the end of the cruise, as can beverage and specialty dining packages. Laundry packages also can be pre-purchased if you anticipate needing extensive laundry services for the duration of your cruise.

Shore excursions and meals in extra-fee restaurants can usually be booked in advance; some lines require that you pre-pay for them.

Special extras, such as sparkling wine, flowers, canapes or cabin decorations, can also be arranged prior to your sailing, so they'll be waiting for you (or someone special) when you arrive.

How do I pay for purchases onboard?

All onboard purchases are paid for using your cruise card, which doubles as your room key. This card is set up before boarding and serves as your ID to get on and off the ship, provides you access to your cabin and makes for easy swiping when you decide you need a pina colada.

You can either link your card to a debit or credit account, or provide cash up front to fund your onboard spending. Be aware: If you link to a credit or debit account, the line might put a hold on your account until after you disembark the ship.

Some cruise lines also use wearable and/or smartphone technology ranging from a casino chip-sized medallion to wristbands that manage onboard payments, security and even open stateroom doors rather than traditional cruise cards.

Can I pay for anything (including tips) in cash?

None of the onboard shops, restaurants, bars, spas or other facilities on your ship will accept cash, but it isn't uncommon to leave a few dollars for a room steward, your waiter or another crewmember who you feel has demonstrated exemplary service. Typically, this is done at the end of your cruise. For more about onboard tipping, see our tipping article .

Can I set a spending limit?

Yes. The best way to do that is to put a set amount of cash into your onboard account at the beginning of your cruise. When it runs out, it runs out. This is especially helpful with kids and teens who might get swipe-happy at the arcade, candy store or onboard shops.

How do I settle my account?

You will receive a paper statement at the end of your cruise (usually the last night) alerting you to the balance that will be charged to your account. You can also keep an eye on your tab throughout the cruise. On some ships your account information is available for viewing on the in-cabin entertainment and information system on the TV. On others, you can visit an automated onboard kiosk or the reception desk to get a copy of your bill.

If you have an issue with a charge, guest services is also the place to settle it. It's much wiser to dispute or discuss a charge while you're still onboard; don't wait until you're headed home to declare you didn't buy that second beer.

Are there ATMs onboard?

cruise card p&o

Yes, on most large cruise ships, you'll find ATMs, but they carry heavy surcharges to use. On smaller ships or riverboats, don't expect to find many (if any) machines.

What currency is used onboard if I'm sailing overseas?

Onboard currency depends on the cruise line with which you're sailing. If it's an American cruise line, the onboard currency will be the dollar; if you're sailing a European line, expect the onboard currency to be the euro. It's always best to check with your line before boarding.

Can I pre-purchase onboard credit or spending money?

Yes. Whether you're buying onboard credit as a gift or for personal use, it's available for purchase before your cruise or once onboard. Find out how to earn onboard credit for free before springing for it yourself.

Are there truly all-inclusive cruises?

That depends on what you consider all-inclusive. Certain luxury and river cruise lines include things you would typically have to pay for on a mainstream line, such as beer or wine with meals, top-shelf cocktails, shore tours, specialty dining venues, internet, concierge and butler service, crew tips and more.

History of P&O Cruises

The story of P&O Cruises began in 1837 when the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson. Originally operating as a mail and passenger service, the company’s inaugural voyage took place in the same year, with a paddle steamer sailing from London to Spain and Portugal.

Fast forward to 1840, and the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company merged with the Oriental Steam Navigation Company to form the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). This merger marked a significant turning point for the company, as it expanded its operations to include routes to India , Australia, and the Far East.

Over the years, P&O Cruises continued to grow and innovate, cementing its position as a leading force in the cruise industry. It introduced modern steamships with enhanced passenger amenities, such as private cabins, dining saloons, and first-class lounges, offering passengers a new level of comfort and luxury.

During World War II, many of P&O Cruises’ ships were requisitioned by the British government for military use. However, after the war, the company bounced back, modernizing its fleet and resuming its passenger services.

In the 1970s, P&O Cruises underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to leisure cruising. The iconic ship Canberra, dubbed the “White Funnel” due to its distinctive exterior, was introduced in 1961 and became the flagship of P&O Cruises. This marked the beginning of a new era for the company.

In the following decades, P&O Cruises expanded its fleet and introduced new ships, each more luxurious than the last. The company embraced innovation, incorporating state-of-the-art amenities and facilities to enhance the passenger experience. P&O Cruises became synonymous with leisure travel, providing unforgettable vacation experiences to people from all walks of life.

In recent years, P&O Cruises has continued to evolve and adapt to changing consumer preferences. The company has focused on sustainability and responsible tourism, implementing environmentally friendly practices to minimize its impact on the environment.

Today, P&O Cruises operates a fleet of modern and elegant ships, offering a wide range of itineraries to destinations around the world. With a commitment to delivering exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and exciting onboard experiences, P&O Cruises remains a trusted and highly regarded name in the cruising industry.

As P&O Cruises looks to the future, it continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what a cruise vacation can offer. With a rich history spanning over 180 years, P&O Cruises has a legacy of excellence and a vision for creating unforgettable memories for every passenger who steps on board.

How do I pay onboard?

We take all the stress out of paying your bill with cashless cruising! All onboard expenses are charged to your personalised cruise card, allowing you to sign for all your onboard purchases. Your cruise card also acts as your room key plus security pass to leave and re-board the ship at ports of call.

All guests, including children are issued with an individual cruise card.

You can charge all onboard expenses to your Cruise Card by:

  • Linking your credit or debit card to your Cruise Card. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. You can link your card when you check-in at the terminal, or before you cruise in Cruise Control. By electing to use your credit or debit cards, you are automatically registered for Express Check-Out. This means there is no need to visit Reception to settle your account. An itemised statement will be emailed to your nominated email address when you disembark . Too easy!
  • Depositing cash onto your Cruise Card at Reception onboard or using the Cash Kiosks onboard
  • Transferring funds from your bank account to your Cruise Card using the Cash Kiosks onboard.

Please note that the currency used onboard is Australian dollars (AU$).

Linking your Cruise Card

If you choose to register a credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) we will settle the outstanding balance on your onboard account to your credit or debit card at the end of each day in Australian Dollars. The card registered must have the name of the guest printed on the card and this must match the name of the guest's photo ID used to embark the ship. Service fees apply to all onboard credit card transactions. The service fee for Visa and MasterCard transactions is 1.1% and for American Express is 2.75%. There is no fee for debit card transactions or pre-paid cash passport Visa & MasterCard transactions.

Pre-paid cards, such as ‘Load&Go Visa’ and Travelex cash passports are not accepted onboard.

Onboard Spending Money (Onboard credit)

If you booked on an offer that included onboard spending money, this will be a monetary amount in Australian dollars added to your onboard account. Any unused amount will expire at the end of your cruise, and is not redeemable for cash at any time.

If you added onboard spending money to your account with a credit card, outstanding funds will be automatically refunded to the registered card and can take 14-21 days to be finalised.

If you added cash to your onboard account, you will need to visit the reception desk at the end of your cruise to collect any unspent money. If you do not collect outstanding funds at the end of the cruise you can contact us to have it refunded. Outstanding funds will be donated to a P&O Pacific Partnership charity partner unless you advise us otherwise. Refunds are processed through HSBC and can take up to 30 days to be finalised.

Onboard credit cannot be used at the casino.

We've got your back

It's not the end of the world if your cruise card is lost or stolen. Report it to reception immediately we'll cancel your old card and issue you a brand new one. An important thing to note, until you report your card as lost or stolen, you're responsible for any transactions made on your card.

Just been told I am eligible for a Blue Light Card.  How does it work with P&O.  Is it correct you have to claim on booking only?

How long after roughly ? I booked our Jan 24 caribbean last Feb, in March our TA said P&O don't do blue light card yet it was staring me in the face. They wouldn't budge, the problem was I had no idea if they were doing it at the time of booking (Feb 2023) I also thought I had to book direct with P&O.

Yes, that's what I thought.  I will find out soon.

I seem to remember on previous posts regarding blue light card that the booking had to be made direct with P and O, also I believe people who had used the blue light card then had issues getting their shareholder benefit allocated  ,although I've slept since then so these  details may not be correct

You have to book direct with P&O to get extra OBC and you have to do it when booking if anyone have had it added retrospectively then they are lucky.

Like

It explains T&C's and what OBC you get on BLC app.

Shocked91

My sister booked a two weeks Caribbean cruise direct with P&O on Monday and received £125 OBC using her Blue Light card. She booked a balcony cabin.

Blue light cards give you an extra OBC if you book direct with P&O only and it is not combinable with booking on board discounts.  Until very recently, that OBC was £130 for a cruise of two weeks or above.  That can only be claimed at the time of booking, not retrospectively.

We now use an agent which a lot of people on here use and, although the extra OBC cannot be added if we book through them, they will give us a discount equivalent to the OBC we would have got booking direct.  That agent normally does give discounts when taking a booking, but the Blue Light discount is instead of that discount, not as well as it.  Basically they look at both discounts and you get whichever is the best - to date the BL discount was a bit better for us, so that is what I had got, though TBH there was not a lot in it.

Thanks all.  Doesn't look like I can use it this year, but worth having for another time.

TigerB

As others have written, to get the additional OBC you have to book direct with P&O, and it has to be a select fare. You do not necessarily have to use the dedicated phone line, but you need to be clear to the advisor that you wish to use it. The extra OBC can only be applied to the cabin in which the cardholder is staying.

We have had it added retrospectively, but only once; I suppose it depends on who you get at the other end of the phone. The official line though is that it cannot be added retrospectively.

If you book onboard, it cannot be used for additional OBC; I was told that is because you get other incentives by booking onboard, such as extra OBC.

You DO still get the shareholder benefit if you are using it for OBC only.  Occasionally, there may be an offer of a special price for the cruise by using your BLC; in that circumstance, you will not get your shareholder benefit.

There was a period recently where P&O was not listed on the BLC website. However, during that period we were twice successful in getting the additional OBC when I called to book.

About a year later, but just checked and as others have said it was an additional discount off the fare offered by the TA equivalent to the Blue Light OBC offered by P&O (but it was on top of the discount I’d already negotiated). This was the excellent specialist TA that many of us use.

Thanks

That is as I recorded earlier.  It is their way of encouraging you to not go through P&O direct.  It is not (now anyway) combinable with their normal discount, so advantage is very little, poss no more than £10.

They now ask for a scanned copy of blc.  Seems some people were trying it on. They have kept my copy though, so we did not have to resend for a recent booking.

Can I ask if your TA begins with B?  Quite happy with mine, but booked on board P&O and they sent the booking through to them.  Docs arrived with no usual discount.  I queried it and it's a mistake, but just thought it might have been deliberate.  I have used a different TA for my Fred cruise but have never used B, but might in future.

So I now have the discount,, a measly 1.9%.  Won't use them again.

Ha ha, just checked other agent, they only give 2.5%!!  Hmmmm.  Have got 5.27% from another agent.

You have to haggle Jean. I get a lot more than that.

If it is the same TA as I have used in the past they have details of my BLC on file and has been beneficial, they give a better discount than without it recently. The discounts that have been given normally without BLC has dropped since pandemic to as low as 1-5/2% and after only comparing with other cruise TAs have they increased discount to match rather than losey business.

Cool Cruiser

Am I getting mixed up with Princess as I thought we had to register a credit card ( or debit card) in the information on the Cruise Personaliser before we sailed , but if we do I can't find where. I definitely know we have to on Princess so I might have been thinking we do on P & O as well.

I think you may be correct, I think P&O still register your card as part of the check in procedure

Yes you do it before you go via my.pocruises…( new version cruise personaliser) think it maybe only lets you do it three weeks before as part of the online check in process. You can upload your photo too

If you do not register a payment card during online check-in, you will not be able to complete the online check-in process. Instead, you will need to check-in and register a payment card when you arrive at the terminal. The check-in team at the terminal will ask you for your credit or debit payment card. We accept the following major cards: Visa and Discover cards, MasterCard, and American Express & Diners Club. You will need your four digit pin number in order to register your card. We are unable to accept Solo, Maestro, Switch or any pre paid credit cards. £50 will be required for pre-authorisation and you will be asked to enter your four digit pin number for verification.

I think it’s done at the online check-in stage

They took £1 from us, and refunded it in the onboard statement/bill

Thanks all, so will wait till 3 weeks before.

We have booked a Saver Fare this time for the first time in years and I was thinking they might be waiting for us to fill everything in before allocating a cabin, but obviously that can't be the case then.

I am hoping 🤞 🤞 that they won't leave it till embarkation to give us cabin number, I will be stressing out by then.  What happens to your suitcases if we don't know cabin number? Anyone know?

That's what happened to us too when I checked in online before our January cruise.

We booked inside saver.

We travel Friday on arvia

We've got cabin number, have registered credit card and just printed our boarding passes and luggage tags

The one thing I've not done yet is upload photos. Wouldn't work from my phone. Might try from laptop nearer the time.

The luggage tags have your cabin number on them so they need to allocate to you in advance

Not necessarily. I know people have not got their cabin allocation until check in. I think you can print luggage labels that leave the cabin blank or, have a code on that indicate that no cabin has been allocated and it gets sorted on board.

Thanks

It says when you book can be allocated any time up to embarkation. The few tines ( years ago) when we booked Saver before we had the cabin allocated either 6 or 3 weeks before so were able to print labels etc .

My question is really if you haven't got your cabin number and you have labels without number on , what happens? Do you check in and then go back and put cabin numbers on or is someone by the luggage pods that gives you the cabin and deck number. As you have to put through specific pod depending on deck number.

I answered that above.

Well excuse me for not realising. I thought I had seen previously people saying you are told at the luggage pods so I was just questioning how you were told. I wouldn't want to risk my cases going though with no cabin number , we haven't had our luggage sometines till late at night so goodnesd knows if you would ever get them.

I arrive by coach so never use the luggage pods, that is all taken care of.

I must admit @amajaa  that in those circumstances, I too would be concerned about how to deal with getting my luggage into the correct pod and who in Southampton to approach to obtain the correct information.

Thanks not just me then 🧳 🚢

Experience (on a different cruise line) is that if there is no cabin number  you hopefully have your name on the luggage.  They can use this to work out your cabin number once the bag is on board. If the cruise involved a flight then the airline baggage label gives your name.

If all else fails then the bag will end up near the reception desk.

There is usually  a table set up outside for people who haven’t printed their luggage labels so I presume you approach them and are given a generic one. You often see cases at the pursers office so perhaps that is where the ones without a cabin number go. Just make sure you have your name and booking reference on your luggage.

Thanks that must be what I have heard about with someone being outside

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

Gene Sloan

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

cruise card p&o

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

cruise card p&o

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

cruise card p&o

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

cruise card p&o

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

cruise card p&o

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

cruise card p&o

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

A heartbroken daughter was left seeing red when a cruise line sold her mother’s cabin on a 14-week trip days after she died at mid-voyage just three days before her 87th birthday.

British passenger Florence Goldwater, 86, caught bacterial pneumonia just two weeks into the 100-day P&O Cruises trip, her daughter, Rebecca Williams, said according to SWNS.

Williams’ husband, Andrew, paid about $84,000 for two rooms on the Arcadia. After consulting with her family, the grieving daughter decided to reboard and continue the journey.

When Williams — who is from the West Midlands in the UK — got back on board, however, she was shocked to learn that her late mother’s room had been quickly sold off and her belongings “dumped” by cruise staff.

Florence Goldwater, 86, with her daughter Rebecca Williams.

“We took her to the sick bay in a wheelchair — the doctor examined her and said she’s poorly enough to need hospital treatment — but she’s not critical,” Williams recalled of the chaotic early days of her mom’s illness, just two weeks after they left Southampton on Jan. 6.

“The medical staff put her on an antibiotic drip and gave her a chest X-ray. They concluded she had bacterial pneumonia on both lungs,” she continued.

“Before we disembarked, I went to reception and asked, if she makes a proper, full recovery can we get back on the ship? It’s a 14-week cruise, and we were only two weeks into it,” Williams explained.

“The young guy on reception asked the manager — who came back and said, ‘Absolutely. You’ve paid for those rooms, they’re yours,’” she noted, adding, “Of course, we didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Florence Goldwater died on Jan. 25.

Williams brought her ailing mother to a hospital when the ship docked in Guatemala on Jan. 24.

Goldwater died the next day, three days before her 87th birthday.

The ambulance ride alone cost over $1,600 — while Goldwater’s hospital stay, accommodations for Williams and her husband and a flight to meet the Arcadia in Hawaii racked up another $23,000.

“It was very, very upsetting. I didn’t think she was going to pass away within 24 hours of us being there,” Williams said of the experience.

“We consulted the rest of our family — and Florence’s sister, Jill, who is 89 years old herself — and everyone said she would’ve wanted us to continue on with the cruise,” she explained of their decision to reboard the ship 10 days later.

Florence Goldwater, 86, on the cruise in the Bahamas.

They were troubled, however, when they found that Goldwater’s possessions had been “dumped” in their cabin.

When Williams checked with the Arcadia’s general manager, he said, “Someone else is in [her cabin] now.”

“I feel like the company is profiting off my mother’s demise — it’s all been so distressing,” she lamented.

“We’ve not heard anything back from P&O — we’ve emailed and emailed, and nothing,” she said.

“We’re literally still on the cruise, and can’t even speak to anyone. All we’ve been told is that it’s a matter for ‘post-cruise.’ We just don’t know where to turn.”

Florence Goldwater's family was shocked when the cruise line sold her room.

The cruise is set to finish on April 15 — leaving Williams and her husband more than a month out from returning from the high seas.

“We are so sorry that Ms. Williams’ mother died during the trip and our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family,” a spokesperson for P&O Cruises told SWNS.

“We follow very strict procedures in such cases to ensure that all personal effects and belongings are dealt with carefully and with the greatest respect,” they insisted.

“As such they were moved for safekeeping to Ms. Williams’ cabin.”
