People looking out over Ait Benhaddou

A day out at Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with one look at this ancient city, you can see why. Approximately dating back to the 17 th century, this mudbrick ksar is an example of pre-Saharan natural construction that once served as a Sahara trading post. It’s since been revived by Hollywood, so you might just recognise it from some pretty big films – does The Mummy , Lawrence of Arabia or Gladiator ring any bells? Before leaving, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal courtesy of the women of the Tawesna Association at a nearby teahouse.

Sand, sun and stars in the Sahara

Take a gander on camelback through the spectacular sands of the Sahara Desert and experience the colour-changing landscape by sunrise and sunset. You’ll be taken to the Erg Chebbi  sand dunes, the largest dunes in Morocco. Watch as they move with the wind and change hue depending on the time of day. After experiencing the hubbub of Marrakech, fall asleep to peace and quiet under the grandeur of a full desert starry night. If you’re going to visit the largest hot desert in the world, we think you might as well stay the night.

Clinking mint tea around the table in Morocco

Towering Todra Gorge and local flavours

Among the man-made wonders of Morocco sits the impressive Todra Valley . Home to Todra Gorge and Todra River, the area is a burst of bright green farmlands cutting through the rocky, dusty terrain. You’ll get a chance to experience the region’s produce after a morning sojourn through the 400 meters high sandstone canyons as you sit down for a picnic provided by the members of the local Amazigh Women’s Association. Savour local specialities, from the country-favourite mint tea to speciality bread with olive oil; it’s the perfect Moroccan meal .

Where is the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is located in North Africa. It spans a mighty 9,200,000 square kilometres across 10 countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Mali and Libya. It's the world's largest hot desert, and the third-largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.

What's the weather like in the Sahara Desert?

As a desert region, the Sahara can experience extreme weather. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with overnight temperatures dropping to 5°C or lower. You'll need a sleeping bag, thermals, a scarf, gloves and a warm jacket for travel in winter. Oh, and be prepared for cold showers at your desert camp!

Summer (June to September) can be very hot with intense temperatures that can reach the high 40°Cs. This might be too uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. It’s super important to use sun protection and stay hydrated. That said, the desert can still get pretty chilly at night when the sun goes down, so you'll need a fleece to rug up.

Spring (March to May) sees the arrival of strong winds and there is an increased risk of sandstorms in April – but don't worry, your leader will always check the forecast beforehand to see if it's safe to stay in the desert.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert?

The best time to visit the Sahara Desert is during the spring months between March to May, as well as the autumn months of October and November. During these times, the desert temperatures are hot but manageable and the nights don’t get quite as cold. Although one thing to note is that between January to May there is usually a higher number of sandstorms recorded, especially in April.

What clothing should I wear in the Sahara Desert?

What to pack will differ slightly depending on the time of year and the activities you'll be doing. But below are the basics you'll need:

  • Light scarf or face mask can be handy for preventing you from inhaling desert dust
  • Sun hat – wide-brimmed, ideally, to protect your face and head from the sun's rays and strong winds
  • Sunscreen – when you're in the desert, it goes without saying!
  • Small daypack for day trips and excursions
  • Light, loose-fitting pants
  • Joggers or jeans for camel rides
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Fleece – for all seasons
  • Warm layers (for winter trips) – you'll need thermals, gloves, a woolly hat and a fleece to rug up as the temperatures can drop to below freezing at night
  • Small head torch – handy for going to the bathroom at night
  • Thongs (flip flops) for camp
  • Hiking shoes or runners

What animals live in the Sahara Desert?

The Sahara Desert is one of the fiercest environments for animal life. The mammals that live in the Sahara range from Saharan cheetahs, dromedary camels and desert foxes to gazelles, ostrich, hyrax and African wild dogs. Reptile life includes the desert crocodile, sand viper and the desert monitor. Other common species include the deathstalker scorpion and the Saharan silver ant as well as over 90 species of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for a Sahara Desert tour?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Immerse yourself in the most surprising part of the Moroccan desert , and contemplate the contrasts offered by its different landscapes as you discover valleys, mountains and historic towns.

The Erg Chebbi dunes

Description

Day 1: marrakech - aït benhaddou - ouarzazate - the dadès valley.

At the scheduled time, we'll leave Marrakech behind to hit the road towards Ouarzazate. On the way, we'll cross the striking Atlas Mountains , crossing through the stunning Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, 2,260 metres high .

At the midpoint of the journey, we'll arrive at the Aït Benhaddou Kasbah , a fortified city that has served as a filming location for movies such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven . You'll have approximately 2.5 hours here to explore this spectacular desert city and to have lunch.

The route then continues to Ouarzazate, where you'll have approximately half an hour to admire and take photos of the impressive Taourirt Kasbah .

Taking “ The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs " towards Skoura, we'll then cross the Valley of the Roses to finally arrive at the Dadès Valley , where we'll spend the night.

Day 2: Dadès Valley - Todgha Gorges - Merzouga

After breakfast, we'll set off towards the Dadès Valley, crossing on the way the incredible Todgha Gorges , where we'll stay for a bit to enjoy the impressive landscape. Next, we move on in the direction of Merzouga, passing through the Jorf palm grove (which produces the best dates) and we'll stop for lunch before arriving at Erfoud , a village famous for its fossil fragments.

Having arrived in Merzouga, we'll swap our motor vehicles for camels to immerse ourselves in the desert and search for the Bedouin camp where we'll spend the night .

Here, soundtracked by desert silence, we'll enjoy one of the most authentic dinners in all of Morocco .

Day 3: Merzouga - Rissani - Alnif -Tizi n'Tichka - Ouarzazate - Marrakesh

If there's one unmissable sight in the desert, it's sunrise . Having enjoyed this tranquil moment, then we'll have breakfast at the camp and gather our strength for our last day.

Passing through the Tafilalet palm grove and Rissani village (from where Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty comes) the tour continues through the acacia-covered plateaus and arrives at Alnif , where we take the road crossing the Anti Atlas mountain range. Through the remarkable mountainous passages of Tizi n'Tichka we'll arrive at Tinghir , (an important Amazigh village), and finally the Dades Valley .

Reaching Kalaat M'Gouna around midday, we'll stop for lunch and a well-earned rest, before we complete our return journey to Marrakesh via Ouarzazate , leaving you at your hotel at around 8:30 pm.

Accommodation

On the first night , we'll stay in Dades , and the accommodation will be the same for both standard and superior options. Among the options are Dar Essyaha, Hotel Babylon, Hotel Le Vieux Chateau, Kasbah Tifawen or similar.

On the second night , the tour will stay in the Merzouga camp . The difference between the standard and superior categories (Azawad Luxury Desert Camp or similar), is that in the standard camp the bathrooms and showers are in the communal tents, and in the superior camp each tent has a private bathroom with a shower.

The standard and superior camps are totally separate and, in addition to the distinction of the bathrooms, there are differences in the food you'll be served and the interior decoration of the haimas.

On the third day, the shower and breakfast will be at the camp in both categories.

For both categories, the rooms are doubles, triples, or family rooms if you prefer.

Hotel pickup

If you're staying in the Medina, you must go to the meeting point. If you're staying outside the Medina, we'll pick you up free of charge at your hotel or riad. If the hotel is outside of Marrakech, the pickup will have a supplement of € 10 ( US$ 10.80) to € 40 ( US$ 43.20), depending on the distance.

Difference between private and shared.

Private and shared tours differ primarily in terms of transportation, with the latter involving sharing a vehicle with others. However, accommodations such as rooms and tents are private, and even meals can be enjoyed separately from the group if desired.

Private tours are assured once you confirm your booking. In contrast, shared tours rely on demand and necessitate a minimum of 4 participants to proceed. If the minimum number is not reached, you have the option to cancel free of charge or upgrade to a private tour.

Testimonials

10/10 - could not have asked for a better experience.

We customized a private 10 Morocco Trip from Casablanca to Marrakech for myself and my wife. We booked our whole trip through Authentic Sahara Tours. Owner, Lahcen, was extremely responsive and honest in answering all of our questions prior to the trip as well as being flexible with our preferences. We had to reschedule the trip twice due to COVID restrictions and we received our deposit back instantly when weren't able to travel.

Highly recommend this tour! It makes you fall in love with Marokko!

I absolutely LOVED the tour with our guide Mohamed! He was so kind and pure hearted. He really tried to give us the best impressions of Marokko. He put a lot of effort in showing us the best places and telling us more about the regions. Mohamed really was a best friend to us! Also he is a very safe driver and has good taste in music ;), The tour is breathtaking. After those days you will know so much more about Marokko!

Our Trip with Authentic Sahara Tours (AST)

We highly recommend this particular tour with AST (Authentic Sahara Tours) if you want a have a profound experience of Moroccan nature, culture, and history. Driving from Fez to Marrakesh is especially rewarding because you get a true sense of the enormity and beauty of this geographically diverse and culturally rich country. We worked with AST to expand its traditional 3-day Sahara trip so we could include additional stops as we were driven from Fez to Marrakesh through the mountains.

Excellent company, staff and tour.

We had 3-day tour from Fes to Marrakesh with one night in desert and it was an extraordinary experience. Firstly, the agency and Lahcen were perfect from organizational and communication points of view, providing all the info we needed very quickly and accurately. They are 100% trustful. Secondly, all the staff were very friendly and we felt extremely comfortable with all of them. Mohamed (Muha), or guide and driver took us everywhere, provided a lot of useful info and made all our trip very nice and memorable.

Want to visit Morocco’s Sahara Desert? The best way to do it is to take a Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech.

The Sahara Desert stretches north-south along Morocco’s eastern border with neighboring Algeria, covering an area roughly the size of the entire United States. It’s the world’s largest hot desert, with beautiful sand dunes that stretch on seemingly forever.

A Sahara Desert tour gives you the chance to see the Sahara’s sand dunes, meet local Berbers, hang out with camels, and sleep in a desert camp.

Most tours include your overground transfer from Marrakech to Merzouga, which is a small Moroccan town that’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of Sahara sand dunes north of town.

  • Editor’s Pick: Luxury 3 Day Desert Trip Marrakech to Merzouga

What to Expect Driving From Marrakech to the Sahara Desert

The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga, which is the entry point to the Sahara Desert, takes about 9 – 11 hours, depending on how often you break. Luckily, there are lots of stops along the way which break up the long drive.

The first stop on the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara is for a view of the High Atlas mountain range.

The mountains serve as a home to some of North Africa’s Berber communities, who live there in remote villages. The High Atlas mountains stretch on for ages, and this is part of why the drive to the Sahara is so long.

Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village and UNESCO world heritage site that’s a popular stop for tours from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert. Most Moroccans no longer live in Ait Ben Haddou itself, but in a newer village on the other side of the river.

While visiting Ait Ben Haddou, it looked oddly familiar to me. Our local guide explained why: This site has been used as a film location for films since the 1960s, including The Mummy, Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and television show Game of Thrones.

The Dadès Gorges are a series of rugged wadi (an Arabic word for canyon) that were carved out by the Dadès river. The walls of the gorge range from 200 to 500 meters high, and appear in various colors.

On your way to visit the Sahara Desert, it is necessary to drive through these gorges. Most tours will make a couple stops to take in the beautiful views, and to walk around the Dadès Gorges.

On my tour, I learned that some parts of the gorges are used to grow roses, which are then used to produce rose water. If you have the chance, buy a rose water product to bring home with you!

The Todgha Gorges are limestone river wadi, carved out by the Dadès and Todgha rivers. Driving through the Todgha Gorge was super exciting with its winding roads and huge cliffs. Most tours include a stop in the gorge so you can rest, wander around, and take some photos.

The main thing to know about a Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech is that you’ll be doing lots of driving. But the drive is worth it.

As you drive more and more south from Marrakech, past the Atlas Mountains and gorges, the landscape becomes more flat. You’ll start to see rocky terrain mixed with pockets of sand. As you enter the desert region, you might spot a Berber person, walking along with a procession of camels.

And eventually, the rocky desert turns to golden sand. When you start to see sand dunes, it means you’ve reached the Sahara!

Once you reach the Sahara, you’ll make a final stop in Merzouga. This is a town near the border with Algeria. It’s from here that you’ll depart on your desert safari into the Sahara.

Most tours arrive in the late afternoon, so that you head into the Sahara when the sun is starting to set. This way, it isn’t as hot.

I made sure to stock up on water in Merzouga. There will be plenty of roadside shops where you can buy a couple liters to bring with you. Lastly, you’ll be brought to a warehouse where you can leave your bigger luggage for the night.

On these Sahara Desert tours you spend just one night in the desert, and so it doesn’t make sense to bring all your luggage. You’ll just bring a backpack with what you need for the night.

It’s here that your Berber guides will arrive to bring you to the desert camp. On my tour, the guides were super friendly, helping us tie scarves around our heads to protect us from the sun.

The guides then bring you over to the camels! These animals were larger than I’d imagined, and full of character.

Camels appear always to be smiling, and seemingly are always chewing. One of the Berbers explained that camels regurgitate their food so that they can continue to chew it. This is called chewing the cud, and it helps them to digest.

At this point, you’ll be helped onto a camel that you’ll ride into the Sahara to your desert camp. The journey in takes about an hour.

Now, I need to make a note about camel riding and responsible animal tourism . In general, the most responsible way to choose activities that are observation only. This is something I learned after I went on this trip. If I were to do it again, I would ask to walk alongside the camels rather than ride.

After about an hour of walking over sand dunes, you’ll arrive at the Sahara desert camp. I stayed in a budget camp, and so I can only share what that camp was like. We were shown around the camp tents: the main tent where we would eat, and various smaller tents where we would sleep. It was a permanent camp, and it was clear that the camp serviced an ongoing cycle of tourists, there for one or two nights.

After you’ve settled into the camp, it’s time to enjoy the desert! You’re allowed to wander off into the dunes. I recommend taking your shoes off so you can feel the warm sand on your feet while watching the sun set over the desert.

Climbing the massive Sahara sand dunes is a work out – I see now why desert survival is notoriously difficult. I found the climb up a dune was difficult, but it was worth the fun of leaping and bounding back down them!

After the sun sets, the camp comes together to eat dinner together while chatting with the Berber guides. Following dinner, there is a desert bonfire. You can lay in the sand and take in a view of the stars that’s like no other.

The Berbers in our camp stayed awake all night to watch over the camels. Many people in my group stayed up with them, but I tucked myself into bed eventually for a short sleep. At sunrise, you’re woken up to pack up and get back on the camels for the ride back to Merzouga.

Tips For Your Sahara Desert Tour From Marrakech

Going on a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech is an unforgettable experience, but it can sometimes be an uncomfortable trip. There is lots of driving, and at some times of the year, it can be uncomfortably hot.

Here are some tips to keep in mind for your Sahara Desert tour.

The summer months in Morocco (June – August) can be excruciatingly hot, and from what I was told during this period the trips to the Sahara tend to be shorter because the heat in the desert is unbearable. For pleasant weather, aim to go in the spring (April & May) or fall (September & October).

The winter months are a good time to visit if you don’t mind cooler weather – there will be way less tourists, which helps reduce overtourism .

Regardless of the time of year, deserts do get cold at night. Be sure to pack a sweater and long pants to wear while you’re sleeping, so you get a comfortable night of rest while sleeping in the Sahara Desert.

What not to do in Morocco ? Don’t be ignorant of local customs. Morocco is a conservative nation, specifically when it comes to gender roles. Women dress very modestly and tend to take on domestic duties. Although it can admittedly be very frustrating to adjust to these customs, it’s important to do when you’re a guest in another country.

I think it is best as a visitor to educate yourself and be respectful of local tradition. It’s a good idea to dress modestly (loose pants, shoulders and chest always covered) and carry a light scarf with you to cover your head, if needed.

Once you’ve left Marrakech, many toilets will not supply toilet paper, so if this is a comfort that you can’t bear to live without, make sure to bring your own tissue. When you are out at the Sahara camp, there will not be toilets (time to squat in the sand!).

You have the option to stay in Merzouga after the Sahara, return to Marrakech, or book a tour that brings you onward to Fes.

I opted to travel from the Sahara north, to spend 4 days in Fes . I went by private taxi, because returning back to Marrakech did not make sense for my itinerary. I regret that I didn’t book a tour that went to Fes, but at the time I didn’t actually know these existed.

The bus driver that drove my group from Marrakech to the Sahara was a man of few words, but many exaggerations. When we asked how long the drive would be he always told us, “1 hour, we will be there soon.”

I quickly learned that this answer was a prime example of Moroccan time: his time estimates were meaningless. Sometimes 1 hour meant 5, other times 1 hour meant 10 minutes.

Regardless of the long drive and all the Morrocan time answers, the trip to the Sahara was absolutely worth it. The Sahara Desert truly is special.

What an unforgettable adventure! This is right up on my list of must-do experiences. Really smart tips too. Especially about the TP 🙂

If you’re ever going to head off an do anything remotely like this again, TAKE ME WITH YOU PLEASE!

Sounds like a bucket list item to me! Interesting how you observed that certain aspects of the trip were things we tend to over-romanticize, but you still loved it on the whole.

I have always wanted to see the Sahara! It’s in my 40 before 40 list actually. Did you do anything in the Atlas Mountains? I want to hike them, but need more information first.

I didn’t do any hiking in the Atlas Mountain range, only in the Todgha Gorge and some other gorges. But in talking with other travellers I learned that Ait Bouguemez is a great region to trek in, and if you’re up to a greater challenge, you can hike Mount Toubkal (Morocco’s highest peak at 4,167 meters). Researching those regions might be a good starting point!

This would be such a fun adventure! I visited a place in California that reminded me of the sand dunes like this, it was totally unexpected to see in CALIFORNIA! This is definitely a bucket list experience that I hope to complete in my lifetime! Thanks for sharing 🙂

California has such incredible landscapes! I am in love with deserts, and so California is on the bucket list for sure.

What an adventure! And sleeping in the Sahara is so unusual. The sand dunes are lovely. And your photos have a nice element of fun to them!

I was so excited to read this since my boyfriend and I were just talking about this last weekend! We’re tentatively planning to tour Morocco including sleeping in the Sahara next September. What a great adventure you had!

A truly unique and incredible experience! The drive from Marrakesh to Merzouga was long, but several stops along the way made the time and miles pass quickly. A camel ride to the luxury desert camp during sunset was unforgettable, and the camp itself is highly recommended.

The sahara desert from marrakech tour – itinerary:, day 1: marrakech – skoura.

At around 8 a.m., your adventure towards the High Atlas begins. On the legendary N9, your guide will take you from the vast plains around the royal city of Marrakech up to the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, the highest (2,260 m above sea level) and most important mountain pass in Africa. This pass journey offers incredible views of the beautiful and contrasting mountain region.

Your first destination will be the village of Telouet, steeped in history, where the largest Kasbah in the country, that of the Berber prince El Glaoui, once stood. From here, the entire region was administered and controlled. Here you can visit the ruins of this Kasbah. Artistic mosaics and elaborate carvings in the prince’s private chambers are still an impressive experience and witnesses of former wealth and power. A customs station set up by the prince at the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass provided a regular income and prosperity.

Sadly, the entire Kasbah is presently closed due to the destruction caused by the earthquake that hit Morocco in September 2023. Nonetheless, you can still enjoy the exterior with a local guide to uncover its fascinating history.

Your journey then takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait ben Haddou, the most famous Kasbah in the country. You will visit this impressive and historical landmark of Morocco. Built in the 17th century, the mud-brick city has often been used as a backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters.

After lunch, the journey continues to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Draa Valley and the Sahara.  We invite you for refreshments in our office there and to settle all outstanding invoices here.

From here we continue to Skoura, one of the most beautiful and flourishing oases in Morocco.  You will spend your first night in the midst of this natural beauty.

Day 2: Skoura – Dades Gorges

In the oasis of Skoura there are numerous old Kasbahs, most of which are unfortunately nowadays only in ruins. In the morning you can visit the restored and fascinating Kasbah Amredhil. It has been beautifully restored and gives a good impression of life in such a shelter. It is made entirely of mud, an excellent building material that is warm in winter and cool in summer because the walls are so thick.

After Skoura, you will drive through the beautiful Valley of Roses to Kalaat M`Gouna. Your visit to this oasis town, the centre of rose flower processing, is a dreamlike experience. This rose cultivation area consists of more than 4000 km of rose hedges and provides for about 400 tons of rose blossom harvest per year. Besides many high-quality cosmetic products, however, the harvest is mainly used for processing into rose water. All these products are appreciated and extremely popular throughout Morocco. Every year in May, the traditional Rose Festival takes place here, where crafts and goods are presented and offered for sale.

To get closer to the magnificent landscape, you now leave the paved road here and continue across the open terrain. Everywhere you will see small caves in the rock formations, which are still inhabited from time to time by wandering nomads. Here we offer you the opportunity to have a glass of tea with one of these hospitable nomadic families. A very nice insight into the original nomadic life.

We continue to the Dades Gorge, where you will have lunch.

The rest of the day remains at your disposal. You take a walk into the extraordinary beauty of the valley, or simply relax and let the impressions you have gained so far take effect on you.

However, if you wish, you can spend the night with a Berber family. For a more unusual overnight stay in the cave of a nomadic family, a walk of about 2 hours would be required. Both alternatives offer a lasting as well as exciting insight into the life of these people.

Day 3: Dades – Merzouga

After breakfast, a one-hour drive takes you to the majestic Toudgha Gorges, the Toudgha Valley. The scenic highlight, the Toudgha Gorges, was created by the regionally most important and eponymous river, the Oued Toudgha, on its journey into the last mountain ranges of the High Atlas.

Via the oasis of Tafilalet, which is famous for its annual date festival, and the urban-looking small town of Rissani, home of Morocco’s current king, you will reach your destination for the day, Merzouga.

Here in Merzouga at the edge of the desert, you will be met by camels to ride to the camp for the night.  On arrival, you will be welcomed with a glass of tea and biscuits before you climb to the top of the nearest dunes to admire the slow setting of the sun.

Your tent in the camp has a private bathroom, king-sized beds, beautiful Moroccan furnishings and lamps tastefully arranged to enhance your enjoyment of the silence and beauty of the dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga – Zagora

As an early riser, you can experience a fascinating and unique spectacle of light and shadow, colour and change in the heart of the red dunes during sunrise; a moving and lasting experience.

After breakfast, we head west past the small and tranquil village of Tazzarine (one location of the film “Babel”), straight into the beautiful Draa Valley. There are extensive palm oases along the river Draa. The entire region is extremely fertile. Here you can harvest all year round, from dates and figs to oranges or even apricots.

We continue on the so-called “Road of the Kasbahs” to your destination for the day, the oasis and capital Zagora. This town of 40,000 inhabitants is still the centre of agricultural production. In spring, onions, beans, barley, cabbage and other vegetables are grown on small plots of land.

Here you will spend the night in a riad.

Day 5: Zagora – Marrakech

After breakfast, your journey takes you along the legendary caravan route directly to Tamnougalte. This village is well known to film lovers, especially through Bernardo Bertolucci’s drama “Sky over the Desert”. Tamnougalte has the oldest Kasbah in the region. Partly dilapidated, partly still inhabited, this kasbah also served as the setting for several blockbusters such as “Babel”. The Tamnougalte kasbah is still considered the central junction of the caravan route to Timbuktu.

Architecturally, this kasbah is a special feature. Here, different building elements of the Moors, Romans and Berbers merge into one overall structure. Thanks to an ingenious system of corridors and openings, the climate inside the Kasbah is very balanced. Look forward to visiting this fascinating and oldest Kasbah in the region.

You will then return to Ouarzazate via the Tizi-n-Tinfifte pass. Towards the end of the afternoon, you will arrive back at the starting point of your journey in Marrakech.

Amazing 10-day custom tour of Morocco

My friends and I spent ten days in Morocco with tour guide Idir through Sahara Desert Kingdom, and it was a fantastic experience. The trip was completely personalized for us, as we had wanted an extra day to purchase a few Moroccan rugs, lanterns, and mosaics. If you’re visiting Morocco, I highly encourage a tour guide to show you around local spots. Traveling through Fez, Casablanca, Marrakech and Chefchaouen would have been impossible without the guidance of Idir.

If you wish, we can visit a nearby Berber women’s argan oil cooperative to learn how this amazing product is made traditionally.

Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou: Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous fortified Moroccan Kasbah and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. A visit to this attractive ancient Berber village is part of our program. We also visit Kasbah Taourirt, located on the road to the Dades Valley, and the Atlas Film Studio, where you will be surprised by different kinds of sets served in famous movies such as Kundun.

Roses Valley: As the name implies, this valley is famous for rose cultivation and rose beauty products. Roses are dotted along the road. Every year the town of M’Gouna hosts the Rose Festival in mid-May.

Dades Gorges: We travel along the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs to the spectacular gorge on the left of the road before the entrance to the town of Boumalne Dades. Dades Gorges is a magnificent river gorge that offers beautiful landscape views and characteristic red rock formations.

Todra Gorges: On the second day, we take a short walk along the river that runs through this spectacular gorge. Todra Gorges is a breathtaking 600m high gorge in the Atlas Mountains

Erg Chebbi: Erg Chebbi is located near the desert village Merzouga and is well known for its beautiful orange dunes. Once we arrive at this place, you will ride on camelback to the elegant nomad camp in the middle of the desert and there you can climb the highest dunes to witness a fantastic sunset. In the evening you can enjoy a nice traditional dinner by the campfire where the local Berbers play their music. You can spend the night under millions of stars if the weather permits it.

  • Guided Experiences: Group tours provide the advantage of knowledgeable guides who can enhance your understanding of Morocco’s culture, history, and attractions.
  • Social Experience: Travelling in a group allows you to share costs, experiences, and social interactions, adding to the value of your trip.

However, it’s essential to consider your travel style and preferences. Group tours may have fixed itineraries and limited flexibility compared to independent travel. If you prefer a more customised experience or specific activities, a private tour or solo travel might be a better fit.

Ultimately, the cost-effectiveness of Morocco Group Tours depends on your budget, travel goals, and the specific tour package you choose. It’s advisable to compare options, consider what’s included, and assess your priorities to determine if a group tour aligns with your preferences and budget.

How can I find the best Morocco Tour Package for my budget?

When you are looking to find the best Morocco Tour Package within your budget, consider the following steps and points:

  • Express Your Budget Clearly: Begin by clearly stating your budget. This will help us understand your financial constraints and narrow down suitable options.
  • Specify Your Preferences: Share your preferences and priorities for the tour, such as the duration of the trip, destinations you’d like to visit, and any specific experiences you’re interested in (e.g., cultural tours, desert adventures, or historical sites).
  • Ask for Recommendations: Request recommendations based on your budget and preferences. We can provide insights into which packages align with your goals.
  • Inquire About Inclusions: Understand what is included in the tour package, such as accommodation, meals, transportation, and guided tours. Make sure it aligns with your budget expectations.
  • Request Customisation: If you find a package that interests you but needs slight adjustments to fit your budget, ask if customisation is possible. We are often able to tailor the package to better suit your needs.
  • Clarify Additional Costs: Be sure to inquire about any additional costs that may arise during the tour, such as entrance fees, optional activities, or tips, so you can budget accordingly.
  • Compare Options: Don’t hesitate to ask for multiple options within your budget range. Comparing different packages can help you make an informed decision.
  • Ask About Discounts: Check if there are any available discounts or promotions that can further optimise your budget.
  • Request Itinerary Details: Seek a detailed itinerary for each proposed package to ensure it aligns with your interests and expectations.
  • Seek Reviews and References: Ask for reviews or references from other travellers who have booked similar packages with Moroccan Journeys to gauge the quality of our service.

By following these steps, we can work together to find the ideal Morocco Tour Package that suits your budget and travel preferences.

What to Expect While You’re in the Sahara

A man holds the harness attached to the camel which is one of the best Sahara desert attractions.

Each of these Sahara desert tours from Fes has a very similar itinerary when you’re actually in the dunes. To save you time reading the same descriptions for each tour over and over, let me give you a full description here.

You’ll meet your desert camp hosts in Merzouga (the village right on the edge of the dunes) in the evening, usually a couple hours before sunset. Then, you’ll head off into the Erg Chebbi dunes (the name of the specific dunes in Morocco), riding a camel into the Sahara.

It will take about 1.5 hours to reach your camp on the other side of the Erg Chebbi dunes. There, you’ll witness the sunset either in the middle of the dunes or right at the camp.

When you arrive at camp, you’ll enjoy a delicious hot dinner – this dinner will be as good as any Moroccan meal you’ve eaten! An appetizing breakfast will be served in the morning too.

After dinner, your Berber guides will make a fire and play traditional music around the flames. Definitely don’t miss observing the stars in the middle of the dunes!

Finally, you’ll spend the night in your luxury desert tent. These are not your usual camping tents – they are well-designed, sturdy, and roomy tents, and sometimes have en-suite bathrooms, with running water, a bathroom, and electricity.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

➡️ my top tip for choosing a sahara desert tour.

My big tip for choosing a Sahara Desert tour is to dedicate a complete day to embracing the wonders of the Sahara Desert. Although an overnight stay can provide a remarkable experience on its own, if you are investing the time and effort to reach the desert, why not extend your stay and fully immerse yourself?

We loved our full day in the desert, and I’d recommend it to anyone who can make it work in their schedule.

The 4-day tour I listed above (#5 on the list) and the 3 day tour starting and ending in Fes (#2 on the list) both give you a full day to explore and play in the desert.

➡️ Booking Your Tour in Advance vs Booking in Fes

You do have the option to wait until you are actually in Fes to find a tour operator in the city (it won’t be hard, there are lots around) and haggle for the most affordable price there.

But it’s important to know that there are advantages and disadvantages to this. Obviously, you can certainly get a tour for a lower price when you’re haggling in Fes than booking online.

However, it also comes with some disadvantages. Online tour companies are much more committed to giving quality experiences to tourists since they are looking forward to receiving positive reviews.

The ones you’ll find in the city won’t care that much because they don’t rely on reviews for new travelers to book them, and your travel experience can really be affected by this.

In particular, if you are a solo female traveler, I would definitely book your Sahara desert tour from Fes online ahead of time, as there have been multiple reports of women being hassled by their guides on tours like these.

For such a bucket list experience, I think it’s worth making sure you get a great desert adventure.

A woman smiling at a dinner table in a glamping campground in the Sahara desert.

➡️ Small Group Tour vs Private Tour

This one is really down to personal preference. It’s really up to you and what’s available for the itinerary you want. For example, I could only find a private tour available for a 3-day tour (not 2 or 4 days).

I used to totally avoid any kind of group tour (after an experience in Cozueml where us and 500 other people were shuffled through the streets), I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy a quality small group tour.

We’ve now gone on a lot of small group tours in many countries we’ve visited, and the result has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve enjoyed connecting with fellow travelers from different corners of the world, and these interactions have often become highlights of our journeys.

Embracing the company of like-minded adventurers has brought an unexpected and delightful dimension to our travels.

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

Headscarf:  Beyond making you look very authentic, Moroccan headscarves are very helpful to protect your head from the sun, wind, and sand. You can get one in any marketplace in Morocco for around 50 dirhams ($5) – plus it makes a great souvenir from Morocco to bring home with you.

Your desert guides will help you tie the scarf in their traditional style.

Dress, kaftan or djallaba : Kaftan and djallabas are traditional Moroccan clothing (long “dress”-like outfits that both men and women wear) and are a great thing to pick up if you want to look SUPER legit in the desert.

Matthew is wearing a kaftan in our camel pictures and he looks absolutely bomb. (Wear shorts underneath and then hike up the kaftan a little bit – it wasn’t hard for him to sit on the camel wearing that outfit).

Jacket : The Sahara can get chilly at night, even after a hot day. I’d plan to bring a light jacket if you’re visiting during the spring or summer. However, nights get downright cold during the winter, (lows in the 30’s and 40’s) so I’d bring a heavier coat and possibly other winter gear (hat, gloves).

Sunscreen : No explanation necessary, but definitely don’t forget it. Matthew always uses  this sunscreen stick , and I wear this facial  sunscreen for sensitive skin  under my makeup.

Something for motion sickness : No matter what tour you take out to the Sahara, you’re going to have to ride on the winding roads of Morocco. These roads made me suuuuuuuuper nauseous (I actually  threw up out the window  as we were going through switchbacks in the Atlas Mountains).

All that to say, I’d highly recommend something for motion sickness.

While  dramamine  is a tried and true option, I recently tried out the  Relief Band for motion sickness  and it has worked impressively well!

You wear this device like a watch on your wrist, and it sends out little pulses of electricity to stimulate your vagus nerve. You’ll feel just a little buzz in your wrist and hand (its nothing like getting shocked), and is extremely effective.

An E-Sim Card: I like having fast, high speed data when we’re traveling out of the country, and I recently found a new service that for getting inexpensive data while traveling.

Instead of purchasing a local SIM card when arriving in a country, I’m now using an e-sim card from Airalo. I’ve used a lot of different methods in the past to get data when traveling internationally, and let me tell you, buying an e-sim card is EASILY the most affordable, fast, and convenient option.

Sahara Desert Tours FAQs

Can You Do A Day Trip to the Sahara Desert from Fes?

It takes 8-9 hours to reach Merzouga from Fes, so it’s not possible to do a day trip to the Sahara desert from Fes. You’ll for sure need 2 days minimum to do an ideal desert tour.

In winter, highs generally hover in the 60s-70s Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius), while lows drop to the low 40s Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). If you plan to visit during this season, it’s essential to pack warm coats, cozy pajamas, a beanie, and gloves, as the tents lack heating facilities.
