If you're planning a trip to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida , visiting Everglades National Park should be on your to-do list. The South Florida national park is known for its expansive beauty, as well as its varied population of wildlife that includes everything from bobcats to alligators.

To see all the Everglades has to offer, sign up for a guided tour. U.S. News consulted both traveler sentiment and expert opinion to identify the top Everglades tours. Before you go, make sure you read through the National Park Service's Wildlife Viewing Ethics to keep both yourself and the animals safe during your time in the park. When choosing the best Everglades tours, we avoided recommending operators that promote wildlife shows or encourage feeding or holding the animals for photo-ops.

Visitors should plan to pay a fee to enter the park, as it may not be included in the price of the tour ticket. You should also keep in mind that many of these tour operators are located at least 30 miles west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Tours that run on airboats – open-air vessels with huge fans at the back that propel the boat – can be very loud. Companies will generally offer ear protection, but if you or your companions are sensitive to loud noises, contact the tour provider to discuss options before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Like any other form of transportation, riding an airboat may come with some risks. To stay safe on your Everglades airboat tour, be sure to choose a company run by experienced, professional boaters (most of which undergo special training and are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard) and adhere to all rules set forth by your guide. Parents should keep a close eye on children and be sure they are properly fitted for their life jackets, and all passengers should protect against the heat by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. Commercial airboats typically do not exceed speeds of 30 to 40 mph to ensure a safe, smooth ride, and most operators will reschedule your tour in the event of lightning or other inclement weather. Tour companies will also generally provide riders with proper ear protection, as the boats are quite loud.

Typically, passengers will feel the most comfortable in lightweight, sleeveless clothing and shorts while on an Everglades airboat tour. If you are taking a wintertime tour, keep an eye on the weather – pants and long sleeves may be a better option, but you likely won't need a heavy jacket. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the effects of the sun; you may also want a hat to provide further shade and keep hair in place. Passengers with long hair are advised to wear it in a ponytail or bun to keep it from becoming knotted in the wind. Tourgoers may also wish to apply some bug spray prior to embarking on their adventure.

Airboat tours last about an hour, though duration will depend on the tour company.

An airboat's top speed is about 30 mph.

Not normally, but you run a small risk of getting misted with water. If you take a tour when it is raining, expect to get wet.

In winter, you'll want to time your visit for midday, when it warms up. In summer, you'll want to visit in the morning or later afternoon when it's coolest. Visiting at these times can increase your chances of seeing wildlife, but you'll likely see all kinds of critters no matter when you visit year-round.

Touring/Riding/Exploring the Everglades

Airboats are a unique means of transportation that allow you  to go almost anywhere in the Everglades  by riding over mud, water, grass, and shallow trails. They are firm and propelled by a large gasoline engine and propeller.

Airboats usually draw only inches or less of a draft as they slide along mud and water. However, they do have their limits and not uniquely made for going long distances on hard ground.

As you make your way into the heart of the  Everglades you will see how the grass, water, and landscapes can change. Book your Fort Lauderdale alligator tour today.

AT EVERGLADES ALLIGATOR FARM

South Florida’s oldest alligator farm, the Everglades Alligator Farm, is located near the entrance of Everglades National Park and contains more than 2,000 alligators.

A trip to the Everglades Alligator Farm includes an exciting airboat tour, an alligator show, and an alligator feeding demonstration! If you are headed to Key Largo or Key West, this is an attraction you absolutely won’t want to miss.

BEST AIRBOAT RIDE IN SOUTH FLORIDA

I went here today with my husband and paid about $60 for both of us, and that is already including airboat show in the package which I highly recommend. This is a great spot to check out when in South Florida. We spent about three hours in the place. Staffs are friendly and shows were very entertaining.

A quick adventure, not too long but enough to get a feel for the land. We loved the 360 turns, even got soaked (or a little wet) depending on where you sit. You can feed an Emu, see the anaconda and fun gift shop too. We loved the baby alligator pen and holding a baby alligator was unforgettable! The alligator feeding and alligator show was great, the gentleman who hosted was even better. Very friendly, patient with kids and informative/educational.

We had a lot of fun here, the animals look like they are taken good care of and Liz was great, she did all the shows on this day (gator, snakes, feeding) and we thought she did an amazing job! The airboat tour was also great, it’s loud but you get ear protection and we saw gators!

As an animal lover, this was just about the best part of our 5 day trip here. I loved the great info from both shows and got to hold a baby alligator too! Over 250 alligators to see of all sizes. If you cant decide whether to add the boat ride, think no more, add it. Very fun, safe and once in a lifetime experience. All so affordable.

Highly recommend visiting this place. It was one of the best experience on our holiday. We booked an animal experience tour which was great, we all loved it and many thanks to our great guide! He was so nice and knowledgeable and made the tour really enjoyable for the kids too. Thank you!

I hadn't had high expectations because the price was lower than other options I had looked into. Tyler was engaging and informative for the alligator feeding and show. Jose was a great tour guide on the fan boat through the everglades. There is a reptile exhibit among other animals to view included with the general admission. My two young kids had a great time as well. It's couple and kid-friendly!

Not just a roadside attraction - but also very educational. The folks who gave the talks where very informative about the reptiles and conservation starts with education. The airboat ride was very fun and VERY wet - too short though. Spent about 3 hours there.

They keep adding to it and it's grown substantially since my last visit. Well worth the admission fee of $27.00 USD which does not include the swamp bait ride. I think it was $32.00 all inclusive. This place does a great job through it's alligator feeding and taming exhibitions. In addition to alligators, they have crocodiles, bobcats, parakeets, large turtles, a snake exhibit, and much more. On this trip, there was no snake show with used to be part of the schedule. I'm not sure if it was discontinued or just not available on the day we went. You are free to bring in your own food and enjoy a nice picnic at one of their many picnic tables. Your entire experience takes about three hours. It's quite educational and I highly recommend it.

You can do the whole thing (feeding demo, airboat ride, show) in around two hours. They have over 400 alligators and a variety of other animals on exhibit. There are several enclosures with baby alligators. The airboat ride is 20 minutes of fun if you get the right guide. Ours was awesome. You actually learn a lot that you may not know about gators.

We planned to just venture through the park on our own but decided to book a tour instead. So happy we did. Pete, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and so passionate about this unique habitat. It was also very convenient and professional. Rather than just "look" at the Everglades, I felt like we got to "experience " the Everglades. Book with confidence.

What Makes The River of Grass Adventures Everglades Airboat Tour Different!

How you explore the Everglades matters to our team at Everglades River of Grass Adventures. Especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, we want our guests to be safe and stress-free. Our Captains and employees receive daily wellness checks to ensure they are healthy and symptom-free. All traffic areas, including seats, railings, and headsets, are sanitized before and after every ride. Hand sanitizer is available. Our captains wear buff face masks to protect them from the sun, wind, and bugs. We encourage our guests to wear them too. However, face masks are not required for our outdoor activities.

Airboat Charter Company

We are not an Everglades theme park or one of the Everglades National Park airboat tour "roadside attractions." We are a small, private Everglades airboat charter company that explores the Everglades just across the road from the National Park tours. We have no caged alligators or wildlife, and the only "show" on the boat. Everglades The River Of Grass Adventures has been making wonderful memories with people worldwide for nearly 10 years. Awarded TripAdvisor's Hall of Fame Tours for earning a Certificate of Excellence each year for 5 years consecutively, and now approaching 10 years of excellent reviews.

Magical Areas of the Everglades

Explore our backyard on an airboat ride through some of the most magical areas of the Everglades. No two tours are alike. Each captain has their route and will stop throughout the airboat tour to talk with you about the history of the Everglades, and its current events and, of course, show you a mosaic of flora and fauna. There are no caged animals on Everglades River Of Grass airboat tours, and no alligator wrestling shows, just nature at its best, naturally.

Subtropical Paradise

The Florida Everglades is a subtropical paradise. Some of the world's most unique and endangered species call the Everglades home. Alligators, egrets, great blue herons, turtles, crocodiles, whitetail deer, black bears, and even the elusive Florida panther are just some of the wildlife you might see on this Everglades wetland safari with the river of grass airboat ride adventure!

Coast Guard Certified Captains

Whether your River Of Grass Everglades airboat tour is near Miami or Fort Lauderdale, you will explore with seasoned "Gladesmen" naturalists, and United States Coast Guard certified captains experts at delivering safe, educational, thrilling, and memorable sightseeing adventures.

Travel With Us

Traveling through the freshwater wetlands on a small, custom airboat is a fantastic way to experience South Florida's Everglades. Come check out Miami's other wild side and see what makes us, The River Of Grass Adventures, different. We look forward to welcoming you, your family, co-workers, and friends to the beautiful and amazing Everglades river of grass. Please check frequently asked questions for more details.

Everglades & Airboat

Everglades, situated in state of Florida is one of the biggest swamp areas in USA. The swamp was over centuries of water pouring from lake Okeechobee. What makes Everglades special is a rich animal and plant world ( from aligators to bears and a variety of different types of plants).

In Everglades National Park, if you're bored then you're doing something wrong, join a park ranger for an hour walk along various paths or photograph alligators just a few metres away from them, enjoy an evening campfire with your friends.

Everglades is the 3rd largest National Park in the USA and is visited by more than 1,000,000 people every year. When people mention Everglades they mostly think on alligators, and for a good reason. Swamp areas are heaven for alligators and that's what makes them thrive in that ecosystem, but not only alligators but a large number of birds is also attracted to it because of very good feeding locations.

To sum up, Everglades is a beauty to behold, if you're there for the animals, plants or just the sightseeing you will be amazed.

Overview of Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port (Port Everglades): All You Need to Know

Fort Lauderdale is a hot spot in Florida — literally and figuratively! The city attracts nearly four million cruise passengers annually and millions of more visitors who are not going on a cruise. The official name of the cruise port is “Port Everglades.” It's in the best location for travelers.

Several terminals and parking lots are near the cruise port, which is next to the Fort Lauderdale airport.

✦ Closest Airport to the Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port

Depending on your travel needs and budget, there are four airports you can choose from when planning your cruise from Fort Lauderdale. The closest is certainly Fort Lauderdale Airport.

✧  Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (Airport Code: FLL)

Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is the closest airport to Port Everglades. It is only 2.7 miles away, and it's incredibly easy to get to the cruise terminals. This is the best airport to fly to and from for easy access to Port Everglades.

✧ Miami International Airport (MIA)

✧ Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)

A bit further out, at 50 miles away, is the Palm Beach International Airport. This may be a good option if you plan to do some sightseeing first. It's a small airport, so it's not overwhelming like FLL, MIA, or MCO; cars easily get in and out of this airport, and it's easy to navigate for people walking through the terminals.

Getting to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale

✦ driving to the ft. lauderdale cruise port.

If arriving at the port by car, you can easily access Port Everglades via major highways such as Interstate 595, U.S. Route 1, and Interstate 95.

Sculpture at the Fort Lauderdale cruise port, Port Everglades, with a cruise building behind it.

Signs are well-posted and help guide you. Once you arrive in the area, follow the signs to your specific cruise terminal for drop-off points. Onsite parking is also available.

Here are the suggested driving directions from Port Everglades authority :

✧ From I-95:

  • From the south: Take Exit #26 to I-595 East
  • From the north: Take Exit #24 to I-595 East

Once on I-595 East from either direction, follow signs to the Port Everglades exit.

✧ From I-75 north or south:

Take Exit #19 to I-595 East, then take the exit to Port Everglades.

✧ From Florida Turnpike North or South

Take Exit #54 to I-595 East, then take the exit to Port Everglades.

✦ Parking at Port Everglades

Onsite parking garages and parking costs .

Parking at the Fort Lauderdale cruise port is on a first-come, first-served basis and is the best option if your budget allows. Parking fees start at $15 per day.

The Port has two parking garages with nearly 4,000 spaces and several lots:

  • Palm Parking Garage is the largest covered parking lot with 1,966 spaces and serves terminals 19, 21, 25, 26, and 29.
  • Heron Parking Garage is another covered lot with over 1,800 parking spots and serves terminals 2 and 4.
  • The surface lots are not covered (AKA: exposed to the Florida heat!). Lots 18 and 19 offer 600 and 400 spaces if you want to park outdoors. Truthfully, though, if you park at Port Everglades, they’ll likely direct you to the open lot that day closest to the embarking cruise ships. That's what they did when we sailed with Celebrity Cruises .

✧ Parking Offsite Near Port Everglades

If you want reassurance that you will have parking, choose privately run lots such as Park By The Ports , located in Dania Beach, where the Fort Lauderdale airport is; it's right next to the cruise port. A shuttle will take you to your cruise terminal, and you can reserve a spot in advance. Other options are Park N’ Go , and Parkway Parking , which offer the best prices.

✧ Airport Shuttle Option

If you’re flying into an airport to board your cruise, you can take a third-party shuttle from either Fort Lauderdale (FLL) Airport or Miami Airport (MIA), which includes the shuttle price, driver's gratuity, and Port Fees. There is no free shuttle service.

✧ Uber/Lyft

Taxis and rideshares are available to get to Port Everglades. Expect to pay between $15-$20 from FLL and between $80 and $120 to the port in Fort Lauderdale from MIA.

✦ Getting to Port Everglades via Public Transportation

Though it’s not very direct, it's possible to get to the port by bus if you’re up for a bit of a trek. Local bus service stops at the Northport section of Port Everglades on SE 17th S. Look for scheduled bus routes 1 or 40 for more details.

If you’re traveling to Fort Lauderdale from Miami or Orlando, the Brightline train is a good option. You take the train to Fort Lauderdale, then can hop in a taxi, Lyft, or Uber to get to the cruise port, which is only 4 miles away.

Brightline tickets are as low as $10 each way for adults, depending on the route and day of the week.

✦ Getting to Port Everglades with Cruise Line Transfers

Cruise lines often provide port transfers between airports and hotels, and hotels and cruise ports. Be sure to inquire with your cruise line to see if this is an option. Some cruise lines include it, while others offer it at an additional cost.

If there is an additional cost, compare it to the options we list here — like a paid shuttle or taxi — to see which is the best choice.

First, let me go ahead and say there is no bad time to go on a road trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key West.

The Florida Keys have a tropical climate , so the weather is generally warm and sunny throughout the year. The peak tourist season runs from December to April when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is minimal.
