Stockholm Salsa Dance

Founders of Stockholm Salsa Dance, today the largest dance school in Stockholm with more than 10 instructors and over 300 students, Harvey Anturi and Miriam Ponce de Leon, started teaching together as early as 1994. Together they are behind several of the major salsa events in Stockholm and Sweden, most notably the yearly Hot Salsa Weekend, Dance Club la Isla, the la Isla Salsa Cruise Competition and Salsa at Gröna lund.

Harvey Anturi left Colombia for Stockholm 15 years ago to study chemical engineering. Dance has been a part of his life since childhood. He won his first salsa competition 1993 together with Miriam Ponce de Leon who started dancing only one year earlier. Together they started the now dissolved Club Latino Dance Company, which represented Sweden in the grand Puerto Rico salsa competition 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

I found the havana club and la isla, our those close to glamstan (we will be staying at he RIVAL) and are these places where you can dance properly?

I'm pretty sure you will be able to have a good dance there. Never been there myself, but I know someone who has. He had a latino girlfriend at the time and the club is very much for the local latinos!

la habana http://www.lahabana.se/welcome.html doesn't give that much information, it has a nightclub, but I don't know how busy it will be.

DANCE STYLES

SALSA CUBANA CASINO

Cuban-style salsa is "circular" rather than linear. The man is constantly moving around the woman in a circular dynamic, checking her out and showing her off. Cubans call their salsa dance "casino". During the decadent days in Old Havana, all the action in the city went down to the casinos where people would go to dance.

Timba is a Cuban genre of music that Cuban musicians started by a musical revolution that ruled the downfall of the Soviet Union. They laid the foundations for the genres like son, salsa & songo. They made them more dynamic, demonstrated their instrumental virtuosity and integrated the rich heritage of Cuban music history, especially Cuban rumba.

RUEDA DE CASINO

Rueda de Casino is a popular dance where couples of dancers form a circle and perform dance movements called by one person and constantly exchanging dance partners. The casino itself has its roots in 'Danz'n, as do its derivatives, the Son Afro-Cuban dances such as Guaguane the Mambo, a rhythm invented by Cachao at the world-famous Tropicana Club in Havana.

Rumba is recognized as a valuable part of the Cubans' intangible heritage.It has its origins in solares - the areas where freed slaves lived after slavery was abolished in 1886. Someone would start drumming on a wooden box, someone else would hit a couple of sticks, and more and more people would show up to join the party. There are three main styles of rumba: Columbia, Guaguanco and Yambu.

iDance Studios  is a dance school in Stockholm that specializes in the couple dances Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba along with related dance styles.  Our courses are aimed at adults and contain a large focus on the social aspects of dance. It should be fun to dance at all levels and everyone should be able to dance with everyone. In our courses, we have everything from people who have recently moved to Stockholm and want to expand their social circle to couples who want to have a fun activity to do together. The founder of the school, Andreas Källman, is a five-time Swedish champion of Bachata and has taught both Salsa and Bachata actively since 2008 in many different schools in Sweden. iDance Studios was founded in late 2014 and has since then grown organically with more and more courses and teachers. At iDance, we are not satisfied with only giving our students great courses. We also want to give them the opportunity to meet new people and to become a part of the iDance Family. We do this through organizing social dance evenings and activities and by giving our students the possibility to get more involved in the school through volunteering.

At iDance, we believe anyone can learn to dance and that the best way to learn is by having fun. Nobody should be afraid of doing things the wrong way. We are there to help you every step of the way and we want our students to support each other. At iDance everyone is welcome and at the social dance evenings, we encourage those more experienced to help out the newcomers. Even a master was once a beginner and it’s important to be humble and give back to the community. Couple dances are about having fun and connecting with other people and you can do that with everyone. For many people, iDance is a sanctuary for their mind, where they can release the stress from everyday life and just be themselves.

Andreas Källman

My name is Andreas Källman I am, at the time of writing, 41 years old and I was born and raised in Stockholm. I have a Masters degree in Computer science from Lunds University and I have studied marketing, economics and management at different universities in Sweden. I worked as a software engineer for 5 years before I realized that this was not what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I wanted to give more value to others and that I wanted more freedom to spend on my two passions in life dancing and self-development but I didn’t know how to achieve this. My passion for dancing started already as a child with hip-hop dancing.

It grew when I started dancing Salsa in 1999 and in 2008 I Started Teaching Salsa because I wanted to help spread the joy of dance to others. Even though dance and self-development had long been my two passions in life it took me until 2014 to start my own dance school. The reason for this is I didn’t think it was possible to make a living on dance. Dancing was always something I saw myself spending my time on once I had managed to build a successful company in another field. In 2015 we hosted our first courses as iDance and since then the school has become one of Sweden’s leading dance schools. Through iDance I have met many of my closest friends and the love of my life. Starting to dance and starting iDance have been the best decisions of my life.

Ports of Stockholm Kicks off 2024 Cruise Season

• April 17, 2024

Ports of Stockholm announced the start of its 2024 cruise season with the arrival of AIDA Cruises’ AIDAmar in Stockholm on Tuesday, April 16.

The AIDAmar arrived while sailing its four-night roundtrip cruise from Warnemunde, Germany, which departed on April 14.

A total of 121 cruise ships are scheduled to call during the season, which runs until the end of October. Ports of Stockholm anticipate a similar year to 2023 in terms of the number of calls and number of passengers.

“It’s great to see that Stockholm is maintaining its attractiveness and continues to be one of the most popular cruise destinations. The cruise shipping companies are committed to sustainable development and work actively on sustainability initiatives. They are upgrading their fleets with new technology that reduces the impact of their vessels on the environment,” said Stefan Scheja, marketing manager ferries and cruises at Ports of Stockholm.

This year, the Baltic Sea and Ports of Stockholm will also welcome several maiden calls, including TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 7 and Cunard’s Queen Anne.

Additionally, Ports of Stockholm is currently building an onshore power connection facility for cruise ships at the Stadsgården quay. The facility, one of the first in Europe, is expected to be completed this year.
