Yoko Ono Music of the Mind Exhibition at Tate Modern in London

The artist Yoko Ono, who turned 91 in February, has enjoyed a successful—if notorious—career over seven decades. She spent the seventies as the wife of Beatle John Lennon until his assassination in New York in 1980, and appropriately for British audiences, that part of her life forms the core of her current exhibition, ‘Music of the Mind’ at Tate Modern.

On the Aldermanbury side of Guildhall, you will find the London Centre, the base for New London Architecture and home to its magnificent London models. These 3D scale models of the capital and its buildings are a great resource if people want to see the architecture of London or the historical development of the city—or simply want to trace routes across the metropolis. Their sheer size is jaw-dropping.

Why Choose Me?

These extracts below from my past travellers’ reviews tell you the answer to that!

How Others See Me

blue badge tours london

Those heartwarming accolades should speak for themselves. I’m not just a guide, I’m a storyteller with loads of fun, quirky facts who reveals the hidden secrets of the places we visit.

I love to bring history, buildings, landscapes and past people’s lives into the present and regale you with yesteryear’s hot gossip!

I’ll make you laugh, I might even bring a tear to your eye with my tragic tales of yore – but I’ll never make you bored!

But don’t be fooled by this lighthearted approach to a jolly good tour. I worked very hard to gain the globally-recognised Blue Badge qualification and shed many a tear myself along the way. It was an uphill struggle, but worth it in the end.

Becoming one of the country’s elite Blue Badge Tourist Guides changed my life. I very much hope that taking a tour with me will change yours.

Here’s a few tasters of what you get on a tour with me. If you don’t see what you’re looking for here, get in touch and I’ll organise it for you.

TOWER OF LONDON

Is a huge castle in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world, built in the eleventh century it has been a castle, a royal palace, a prison and even a zoo! We will see the Crown Jewels, the Beefeaters, the Ravens and find out about some of the fascinating people connected with the Tower.

CHURCHILL WAR ROOMS

Underneath the streets of Westminster is a perfectly time capsule that takes us back to WWII, the secret cabinet war rooms, where Winston Churchill helped defend the country in its ‘Darkest Hour’.

IMG_4725.jpg

WESTMINSTER

A World Heritage site and one of the greatest churches in the world, it is where thirty kings and queens are buried, it is the nation's coronation church and is where 16 royal weddings have taken place. Amongst many other things we will see where Prince William and Catherine Middleton married in 2011, and we will see Henry VII’s Lady Chapel, one of the architectural highlights of the country.

BRITISH MUSEUM

Dedicated to human history, art and culture from historic times to the present, it’s collections are from ancient to modern cultures from around the world. It’s collection includes the Parthenon Marbles, the Rosetta Stone and the statue of Rameses II.

NATIONAL GALLERY

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of Western Europe art in the world, dating from the 13th to the 20th century and painted by some of the world's greatest artists. The paintings range from medieval altarpieces, the Italian renaissance, the Dutch golden age to the work of the Impressionists.

ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

Known as the ‘Nation's Church’, it has been the site of state funerals for some of our greatest military leaders and is where the nation goes to celebrate and express their sorrow. It is also one of the architectural highlights of London, completed in 1710 by the master builder Christopher Wren.

OUT-OF-TOWN

Below you can find details of some of my most popular out of town tours:

Windsor £500

Hampton Court Palace £500

Windsor & Hampton Court Palace £725

Stonehenge £655

Stonehenge & Bath £990

WINDSOR CASTLE

Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite home, and the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, which has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost a thousand years. We will visit St. George’s Chapel which has a Royal burial vault where Henry VIII & other monarchs are buried, and it was also the location of Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle.

zaymuel-2UqPMPJBceQ-unsplash.jpg

HAMPTON COURT PALACE

It consists of two palaces in one, a Tudor palace built in the early sixteen centuries and a baroque palace built by Sir Christopher Wren in the eighteenth century. We’ll see the largest surviving Renaissance kitchen in Europe capable of serving sixteen hundred meals a day and walk through Hampton Court Palace's beautiful gardens.

The most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world with a history dating back over five thousand years, a place of enduring mystery, built as a temple - a place of ceremony, of burial and of celebration. Let me explain to you the difference between the Land of the Living & the Land of the Living!

Boasting numerous imposing landmarks and attractions, such as the Royal Crescent, Queens Square and the Pulteney Bridge, the city is most well known for its Roman Baths which are among the most significant historical sites in Europe.

HEAR FROM MY CLIENTS

“Our four-hour trip with Alex was fantastic. He took us to the expected sites….. He also took us to the not so familiar parts and shared knowledge that we otherwise would not have been able to experience on our own. Alex was very knowledgeable and a fun person to spend 4 hours with.”

"From famous sites to hidden gems, let me share the London I love with you."

DIANE IN ACTION ON BANKSIDE, LONDON

What is a blue badge tourist guide.

Diane Blue Badge Logo.png

The Blue Badge is the UK's highest guiding qualification. No one knows London better than a Blue Badge and no one has the access that we have to places like the Tower of London and Windsor Castle.  We're passionate about what we do and we believe no one does it better. For the real deal, make sure you book a Blue Badge.

I fell in love with this amazing city over thirty years ago. Today I’m proud to call myself a Londoner and even prouder to be a qualified London Blue Badge guide who can help make your stay in London as unique and unforgettable as this great city itself.

I’ll bring the picture postcards to life. At the Tower of London, we’ll walk through 1000 years of royal history, uncovering dark stories of treachery, murder and execution. At Westminster Abbey we’ll see the spots where kings and queens are crowned, married and buried.

If museums and galleries are your thing, I’ll take you straight to the highlights of the vast British Museum Collection and the star attractions of the National Gallery or Tate Modern.

Love to stray off the beaten track? So do I. How about a walk in the old City to discover hidden courtyards and alleyways most Londoners have never seen? Or discover one of London's unique neighbourhoods like Bloomsbury, Spitalfields or Marylebone - all with their own fascinating stories to explore.

Personal Interests:

History especially royalty. Shakespeare, Dickens and literary London. Markets. Pubs and afternoon tea. And seeking out London’s hidden gems.

Chris Williams, London Blue Badge Tour Guide

I’ve lived in London for over twenty years, and I can work with small groups and families as well as larger tour groups. There's nothing I love more than helping families and small groups have a great half day or day in London. With every tour, my goal is to help people learn about the great sites of the city, take some great photos, hear great stories, and make some remarkable memories. I am knowledgeable and passionate about what I’ll show you, and that will come across as we spend our time together!

One of my specialities is the Tower of London! This is one of the most complete and extensive castle complexes in the world. If you have a limited time in the city, this is a must- see destination. Over 3 million people visit this UNESCO World Heritage site a year, but with a knowledgeable guide you can see the most, and navigate the crowded areas more efficiently.

Did you know that you can see the actual items used during the Coronation of King Charles III in the Tower of London?

Or that there is a cafe just a few steps from the Tower entrance, so hidden away that it is usually very quiet, which is a great place to have a quick bite to eat?

Or that there is a small enclosure, visible when you climb the staircase of the White Tower (the central, original building of the Tower), where two bodies were found... the bodies rumoured to be Princes murdered there in the 15th century!

Another of my favourite tours is Westminster Abbey! It is easy to fall under the spell of this remarkable site! Westminster Abbey is not a museum, it is a working church, and yet it is alive with the history of the monarchs crowned there and the thousands of notable souls buried and memorialised there. I can quietly, discretely and respectfully show you the key areas of the Abbey, and help you get the most out of your time there.

Did you know that there are over 3,000 tombs in Westminster Abbey?

Or that as you walk to the Chapter House of the Abbey, where religious instruction and readings were held, you walk past the oldest door in Great Britain... built in the 1050's?

Or that the Abbey's restrooms can be found very close to the entrance you'll use to get in (the group entrance)... good to know!

London Highlights Tour

Ideal for the first time visitor to London. There is so much to see in this great city. The idea behind this tour is to show you the best that London has to offer and, at the same time, give you ideas for further exploration. Maximum 10 people. 8 hours on foot and public transport. Price covers my services as a private Blue Badge guide.

Stonehenge.jpg

Stonehenge and medieval England

The most famous neolithic site in Europe. In this age of digitally available knowledge it is a real treat to visit somewhere about which we actually know very little. We will examine the theories behind who, why and how this extraordinary site came into being. Additionally this day will include Salisbury with the most beautiful cathedral in England with its copy of the Magna Carta. We could replace Salisbury with Georgian and Roman Bath or King Alfred's Winchester. 10-11 hours. By car maximum four guests although three may be more comfortable. Price covers my services as a private Blue Badge Driver-Guide and use of my car.

Windsor Castle from above.jpg

Windsor Castle

Windsor is the largest and longest continually inhabited Royal residence in the world (so long as you ignore the brief period from 1649 to 1660 when we had no monarch!). It is said to be the Queen's favourite home, somewhere she likes to be when she doesn't have to be anywhere else. The artworks and furniture collections are extraordinary and St George's Chapel is a thing of beauty containing many tombs of past Kings and Queens. 5 hours by car maximum 4 passengers. Can be added to Hampton Court for a full day out. Price covers my services as a private Blue Badge Driver-Guide and use of my car.

Hampton Court.jpg

Hampton Court

This is the finest Tudor building in Britain. Hampton Court was built by Cardinal Wolsey, right hand man to Henry VIII. Foreseeing his downfall, Wolsey gifted the Palace to Henry VIII in a vain attempt to curry favour. It didn't work! Much later, King William III employed Sir Christopher Wren to attach a second Palace in the then new Baroque style. Two palaces for the price of one! 5 Hours by car maximum 4 passengers. Can be added to Windsor to make a full day out. Price covers my services as a private Blue Badge Driver-Guide and use of my car.
