New to TTG?

The tours that are a lifeline to independent british businesses.

Katherine Masters

Booking small group tours of rural Britain can help provide crucial support to independent businesses, specialist operator Rabbie’s tells TTG, as the operator marks 30 years of organising trips

eCard

To celebrate 30 years of running small group UK tours, Rabbie’s has revealed its positive impact on other small businesses in the UK. The Scottish-founded operator supports an estimated 210 full-time jobs, has facilitated 98,000 overnight stays in the last year and in 2019 it poured more than £16 million into rural accommodation. With a 24% increase in bookings this year compared to last, these figures look set to increase.

The economic boost this staycation market can provide to small businesses, such as family-run B&Bs and village pubs, has never been more valuable. Statistics from the Federation of Small Businesses show that 82,000 small operations closed their doors for good in 2022, while the British Chambers of Commerce reports that UK hospitality firms are the businesses most likely to see a diminished turnover during these challenging times.

Forty per cent of Rabbie’s business comes through the trade, and director of sales and marketing Heather Reekie said:

“These figures are troubling not only due to the hole they leave on a tourist’s itinerary, but local pubs and restaurants also act as core infrastructure for rural communities. One of the last remaining hopes for local hospitality businesses is the high demand for small group regional tours around the UK and Rabbie’s small coach tours are uniquely positioned to support rural communities.”

Dalmore Guest House © Rabbie's

Rabbie’s uses mini coaches to operate tours that visit villages and off-the-beaten-track destinations that larger coaches simply cannot reach. Reekie adds: “This provides a unique and genuine touring experience while supporting the economy of small communities by spreading the tourist pound beyond the popular landmarks.”

Among the small, independent businesses supported by Rabbie’s is Dalmore Guest House in Inverness, a business relationship that dates back 30 years. Owner Dave Reid says: “Our relationship with Rabbie’s Tours began when its founder (Robin Worsnop) came to our guest house looking for a room and met my mother Molly who was landlady at that time. This was the beginning of a business relationship with Rabbie’s which we are proud to say continues to this day. The guest house is now run by myself and my wife Janette.

“We have been delighted to witness first hand the tremendous success of Rabbie’s over the years and the longevity of our business relationship has enabled us to continually reinvest in our own business. We are very grateful that Rabbie’s has the foresight to use small accommodation providers like ourselves as this gives guests a more personal service.”

Personal service

The Kilted Fox on the Isle of Skye is another accommodation partner of Rabbie’s. Owner Hannah Searle explains how they work together on an almost exclusive basis, which has business and environmental benefits: “Local tourism is the primary income for many residents in Skye, including our own business. It was really important for us to feel like we were working together with Rabbie’s, rather than using the bigger booking platforms where support is lacking.”   “We also aim to be as environmentally friendly as possible, so working with Rabbie’s means we can significantly reduce cars on the road. Previously our guests would travel in up to six cars at any time, now it’s just one bus!”

Maureen Savage from the Sheiling Guesthouse in Ullapool agrees that working with Rabbie’s is great for the local economy: “Rabbie’s guests stay with us for two nights, giving them time to enjoy the lovely village of Ullapool and experience the local restaurants and gift shops.” “The guests love all the home-made breakfast items at The Sheiling Guesthouse from the home-churned butter, our own recipe granola, to the home-made sausages and a universal favourite is the home-made muffins.”

5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London

Rabbies provided me an excellent 5 Day experience through the region of Cornwall. Since I was the only person on the trip I got to see a bit more as well from Pick up to drop off. Jack my Driver/Guide was very knowledgable and tought me so much about the history of the area. I got in a fair bit of walking in as well, saw part of a Roman wall, Stonehenge, and Lands End to name a few places. I highly recommend this tour and Rabbies.

4-Day Isle of Skye & West Highlands Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Tour

4-Day Isle of Skye & West Highlands Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

Donald our tourguide was fantastic. He really knows a lot of the history and culture of Scotland and talks about it with pride. All stories and information was well balanced with audio pieces of movies or beautiful songs and scottish music. The stops always were planned very well, so we didnt have to hurry and could see all the beautiful nature and culture before the big busses with massgroups arrived. We'd certainly recommend this 4day tour, you'd be lucky to have Donald as your tourguide! Last but not least: even the b&b's were phenomenal with beautiful sights and Donald brought us there and picked us up every morning.

This tour was fantastic because of our tour guide, John. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and adaptable. We can't wait to book our next tour with Rabbie's!

2-Day Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath & Oxford Small-Group Tour from London Tour

2-Day Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath & Oxford Small-Group Tour from London

We enjoyed the trip and Christo was a great guide! The only thing I was not too happy about, is the one night stay in Bath. I had requested for a bedroom for all 4 of us and whilst I understand some accommodation cannot put up 4 pax in a room, the least was to put us in side by side rooms as we’re one family. It was so disruptive having to shift clothes from the luggage up and down the B&B. I made the booking way in advance and would have appreciated a heads up at least of this arrangement. When we checked in, there were others behind us who were checked into rooms next to either of our rooms so they could have easily put us in adjacent rooms. But when we asked, we were told they’re fully booked. I would appreciate it if Rabbies or TourRadar can explain why this arrangement was poorly managed given the months of advanced notice (booking was made in Sep).

3-Day Orkney Explorer Small-Group Small-Group Tour from Inverness

Seana, faced with having to tell us the Orkney Tour was cancelled while in progress, managed our disappointment, sorted things out for the 2 wishing to leave, and then proceeded to guide us on an incredible 3 day replacement North Coast 500 (538!) tour, backwards :) She was passionate and impressive with her intimate and widespread knowledge and love for every inch of the tour, places, geography, history, tales, music - and magical with it's delivery throughout the tour. Professional yet fun, delightful smiling eyes, expert driver! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and would travel with Seana again and again :) Thank you Seana!

Alan was a great tourist guide, he knew so much and made everything interesting and captivating. I think personally a few stops were not of most interest but the overall experience was great. We spend quite some time sitting down but mostly because there’s so much area to cover.

4-Day Islay & the Whisky Coast Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Including Admissions

The Rabbie's 4-Day Islay & the Whisky Coast was a great vacation. We visited the major distilleries on Islay as well as some smaller ones. The hotel was located right near Bowmore and had a really good breakfast (included). Our tour guide, Al, was great. He had lots of interesting bits of information. Some small some big things about Scotland. We also stopped at a bunch of historical sites too. Only issue is that July and August are the 'quiet season' for many distilleries. Most of the distilleries didn't have tours. All of them were open for tastings. That's the main attraction for this tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Devon and Cornwall tour with Jack. Jack is extremely knowledgeable about the area, so engaging with a lot of humour and an excellent driver! We would love to join another tour on our next visit to the UK.

I went on two, day tours. And thoroughly enjoyed both.

I went on two day tours. West Highland and Outlander. Fantastic. The buses were clean, comfortable and luxurious. The drivers, Mina and Lynsey, were friendly, very knowledgeable and extremely competent drivers. The tours were everything that I was hoping for. I would gladly recommend both tours. Thank you Rabbie’s for the experience. I greatly appreciate your office staff who helped me secure these tours before I left Australia.

Fantastic tour of Southern Spain and the Treasures of Andalucia

What an amazing tour with our incredible Spanish tour guide Violeta! She made the tour so historically interesting, and made a point to get to know each of us on the tour. The scenery and sites were breathtaking. Our driver Paulo was also wonderful and shared lots of information about his country Portugal. Violeta and Paulo made a great team taking care of all of us throughout the tour. Highly recommend Rabbie's -absolutely love the design and including “off the beaten path” sights. Definitely plan on doing another Rabbie's adventure.

Rabbies Tours Rock!

Thank you for the wonderful tours we experienced with your guides Alec (Loch Ness, Glen Coe & Highland Tour from Glasgow) and Lizzie (Alnwick Castle in Northumberland from Edinburgh). The grouping of your tour sites was amazing and it was well organized. Your drivers/guides are very knowledgable about Scottish history and we loved the stories they told. We are grateful for their attentiveness and promptness. One feedback is perhaps to allocate a little more time at sites where we can grab lunch and explore a town on our own. Other than that, everything went superbly well.

Much more then just an ‘Outlander Tour’

Our Outlander Tour was absolutely great! We saw so many different and interesting things and learned a lot about Scotland’s history. Big big thanks to both Kevin and Willie, super driver and guide. A special thanks to them for their extra services (helping us to find a pharmacy and a doctor for my sick friend). We will surely recommend RABBIES to our friends in Luxembourg. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We had a fantastic day with Colin

We had a fantastic day with Colin, he had us all in stitches, such a great bloke. Was very informative during our tour. He advised us which places were best to eat in and where the best toilets were. He arrived on time and immediately with his lovely personality made everyone on the coach very welcome.

Rabbies brings history to life

From start to finish, our experience with Rabbies was top-notch. Quick and complete responses to my queries on the front end. The tour that we took was the three-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh. Our guide, Neil, was friendly, unbelievably informative and made history come to life. We were entranced with his knowledge of kings, queens, and the mystical side of Scotland as well. He also put his passengers' safety at the forefront, even making a quick stop so my mom could get the necessary medical attention to get a ring removed from her finger which had swollen after taking a fall before our tour started. His care and concern is unsurpassed.

Rhys was an amazing tour guide!

Rhys was our tour guide and he was fantastic! It was our first trip to Scotland and we really wanted to get a good sense of what the country was like (not just see the one city of Edinburgh that we were staying in). He was funny, very knowledgeable, charismatic and patient at the many stops we hit along the way. It’s a full day (about 330 miles) and you get a nice tour of the Highlands and other areas as well. Would definitely recommend Rhys again!

"From Castle to Lochs from land&water"

First, the booking agents were very helpful in getting me the tour I wanted and in short notice.Second our guide/driver Graham was extremely knowledgeable and also highly entertaining.Throughout the trip we given facts and legends about where we were at every location we visited.

Great Tour with Matt 👌

Really enjoyed the tour! Matt gave us interesting insights about the Cotswolds and the history behind it. Plus he even played sweet British music on the bus! Definitely worth booking this tour!

Date of experience : April 21, 2024

Great tour, no frills as expected, fabulous way to visit somewhere on a budget with limited time. Gabriel, our driver and guide was a local, very knowledgeable about the local history with a great sense of humour, made the time on the bus fly past. Well organised, good amount of time spent in each location and a good amount of free time.

Absolutely brilliant tour

Absolutely brilliant tour , Simon the driver is so good and informative , he knows lots of history including facts and figures , he was a huge part of a great experience , he couldn’t me more accommodating to all on the bus , and as for the scenery , Wow , omg , Scotland , Skye , stunning . Thank you Rabbies for everything , l will be back for sure . P s , l left my jacket and walking pole on the bus and it was returned to me , Thankyou again , great service , great company . David from Dundee /london

A wonderful way to explore Devon and Cornwall

We loved our small group only 8 this trip in a comfortable 15 seater. Our driver Samuel was informative, on time and helpful if we needed any assistance. The audio system in the bus was very clear. Accomodation made by Rabbie's was excellent. Loved seeing places a little off the beaten track along with some of the hot tourist spots.

Wonderful tour

Wonderful tour , perfect amount of stops . Tour guide Gary was fabulous and made the trip so enjoyable with his knowledge of Scottish history . Will definitely sign up for another tour in the future .😁

Oban, Glencoe and Lochs and castles 1 day tour

The tour I was part of, our tour guide was named Grant. He made this tour exceptionally welcoming for everyone. He told stories, played music and joked with people on the tour. He made sure we got stopped at as many places possible and gave us some decent time there too! The scenery was gorgeous and it was really cool to learn so much about the Scottish history. Plenty of places to stop for restrooms and pictures and the only place that charged for a bathroom was Oban. I definitely recommend this tour, no matter if you’re Scottish or not, I am, I learned so much and had such a wonderful day full of lovely views, laughs, jokes, stories and music. I’ll definitely be back

The driver tells the stories like it was their first time. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

The company employs the best driver/guides. Full of enthusiasm for a trip they have made many times. The van was clean and in very good condition. Jim, our driver for the coastal route was the kind of driver you’d expect from Rabbies tours having done one before. Very cheerful, informative and humorous.

Date of experience : April 22, 2024

It was pretty good actually.

This was a good but not great tour. I feel that more could’ve been done with exploring Devon than dumping everyone into Exeter for a few hours. Also, some sections of the tour were a bit long and could’ve used a trim down. Our guide was pretty good but I just wish he could’ve talked about Devon a bit more and given some more highlights about St Ives. He didn’t really capture the history of where we were visiting. Other than that, anyone reading this review, please, please consider this tour for your vacation itinerary as Devon and Cornwall are very lovely places.

On our Isle of Skye tour guide Lizzie…

On our Isle of Skye tour guide Lizzie was excellent. Extremely personable, friendly, knowledgeable about all aspects of the landscape and history. Also kept the tour moving at a perfect pace. Very enjoyable experience.

Date of experience : April 19, 2024

Our Scotland tour from Edinburgh to St. Andrew’s, Kingdom of Fife.

We truly loved our tour with Rabbie’s. Our driver Ally was wonderful. Shared so many historical stories, pointing out many things we may have missed without his knowledge of the land. He was easy to understand, a good driver, and was very accommodating to the whole group. He even shared some fun family stories with us. I would highly recommend this tour and company to anyone wanting to get a close up and more personal tour experience.

Over the sea to Skye !

Overall a great trip, really impressed with the driver and his fellow sidekick, both very knowledgeable and happy to help answer any question. Another positive was they could tweak the itinerary to suit the weather…..and also the music was good ! Downside was we didn’t spend our 2 nights in Skye….a small point. Can’t lie, the accommodation was a tad disappointing, rooms a bit “tired” but the food was very good. Whilst overall a very enjoyable trip….it must be said staycations can be expensive!

Money well spent!

Our guide Kim was great, very friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the planned stops, as well as the quick “stretch your legs / photo opportunity stops.” Kim had some great recommendations for things to do when we got to our destinations, as well as things for after the tour, in Edinburgh. The destinations were beautiful, however looking out the window and listening to her commentary were also a highlight. Highly recommend!
