These 3 Peru Spiritual Journeys Offer Sacred Quests into the Andes

spiritual journey in peru

People are on the lookout for Peru spiritual journeys. After all, Peru is a spiritually potent land.

It makes up the bulk of what once was the Inca civilization, the largest of the pre-Colombian civilizations.

Peru also hosts a large portion of the Amazon rainforest as well as indigenous groups still at one with the land.

Travelers embarking on journeys to the vibrancy of Peru often crave transformational experiences. Sure, some go to make memories in the colonial cities.

But others are seeking shamanic healing in the Sacred Valley and elsewhere.

There are 3 spiritual journeys in Peru that take the cake for being the most immersive, entertaining, and downright transformational.

These journeys contain enticing Peru travel itineraries that offer unique takes on Incan civilization, traveling in the Andes, local ceremonial practice, and sacred site travel.

Yes, they are our very own journeys!

Call us bias, but soon you’ll find out why Sacred Earth Journeys is leading the way in hosting the best Peru spiritual journeys.

Stay with us, read on, and imagine the soul-growth you’d obtain from attending any of these sacred quests through Peru!

Peru Journey 1: Welcome to Portals of Peru with Freddy Silva

Discover the power places of an ancient civilization.

spiritual journey in peru

Traveling with Freddy Silva will make you more conscious of how ancient sacred sites influence your consciousness. Freddy is a well-regarded metaphysical speaker, author, and researcher on ancient civilizations.

We’re eternally grateful to have Freddy with us to lead his Peru spiritual journeys.

For a taste of Freddy interacting with and teaching about sacred sites in Peru, check out this video of him lecturing about the significance of Saqsayhuaman, Peru.

Saqsayhuaman is a megalithic complex overlooking the city and capital of the Inca empire, Cusco.

“Welcome to Portals of Peru” was named after this journey’s capacity to launch its participants into a portal of ancient mystery, power, and architectural precision.

This journey is focused on going beyond the typical sites and explanations offered within most trips to the Andes. For example, with Freddy, participants will visit Wayna Picchu, a ceremonial Moon temple above Machu Picchu.

There is a level of physical fitness that tends to be useful on such a  journey.

The Andes bring travelers thousands of feet into the air. With Freddy, you’ll spend some time appreciating the scale and solitude of the Andes, including a strenuous hike up to the Temple of the Moon (Wayna Picchu).

Freddy believes that those who fully engage and participate in the lessons and energetic shifts this journey has to offer may not be the same people by the end of the journey (for better, of course).

What our participants are saying about “Portals of Peru”

“It was a truly amazing experience, surpassing our expectations. We would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to move forward spiritually.” -Liz and Roger Chafer, Haute Vienne, France

Peru Journey 2: Heart of the Pachamama with Puma Quispe Singona

A sacred journey of healing, andean medicine, and energy work in peru.

Sacred Earth Journey Participant on Peru spiritual journeys

Earlier this year, we created an interview video with Andean Medicine Man Puma Qusipe Singona that captures the importance of this journey, “Heart of the Pachamama”.

In the video, Puma explains why this pilgrimage is one of initiation. . .of self-discovery, of healing, and awakening. He reveals why we travel to these unique, powerful, energetic centers that the ancestors have been journeying to for thousands of years.

To attend “Heart of the Pachamama” is to capture a more traditional take on the Sacred Valley of the Inca and the sites therein.

We visit Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, and even Puma’s family in his hometown of Chinchero.

Puma is recognized as a keeper of true, ancient wisdom. He’s been trained as a traditional Andean medicine man by his grandfather since the age of 6.

Puma is now eager to use his gifts to expand the hearts of his global community.

A highlight of this journey with Puma is working with Wachuma, a traditional Andean plant medicine . Legend has it that Wachuma was named “San Pedro” (Saint Peter) by Catholics because they believed it opened the gates of Heaven.

Watch this video of Puma on our Youtube channel to see just how epic this journey is and to gain further clarity on Puma’s intentions and how he walks as a medicine man.

By the journey’s end, Puma will guide us in ceremony in honor of our growth and transformation and rebirth. Then, it’ll be time to cross into our new lives back home.

What our participants are saying about “Heart of the Pachamama”

“Being guided by these powerful masters on our journey of remembering our connection to Pachamama (mother earth) and our cosmic creators, makes it nothing short of magical and truly transformational.” -Ana Cardoso, Uxbridge, England

Peru Journey 3: In Search of Hope with Dr. Chris Sopa

A healing & transformational journey to peru.

spiritual journey in peru

Take a journey with world-renowned author and speaker Dr. Chris Sopa and learn the meaning of “healing”. This journey combines Dr. Chris’s experience as a psychologist with the traditional knowledge of local guides, including a traditional Q’ero shaman.

If you’re interested in the emerging crossroads between scientific and spiritual knowledge, then we highly suggest this journey!

The theme for “In Search of Hope” involves clearing a path to situate yourself in your new future. This is what Dr. Chris advocates for, reflected in her 2012 book Choosing the Life you Were Born to Live .

Similar to Freddy Silva’s “Welcome to Portal of Peru”, Chris’s journey centers on transforming the soul through the potency of sacred sites.

Participants will engage in ceremony and visit sites such as Quillarumiyoc, the Aramu Muru Doorway, and of course Machu Picchu with an optional trek up to Wayna Picchu.

What people are saying about “In Search of Hope”

“My trip to Peru was life-changing! We visited many sacred Incan sites around Cusco which were previously unknown to me. These visits were made more meaningful by performing ancient ceremonies led by a shaman who spent each day in the Andes with us.” -Brenda Quesenberry, Vero Beach, FL

The Top 8 Spiritually Activating Places You Have to Visit in Peru Before You Die

Editors Note: The following is the travel diary of the most spiritually activating places to visit in Peru Francesca Cassini as she partakes of a 23-day journey exploring sacred sites, hiking through majestic landscapes, and experiencing the sacred plant medicine Ayahuasca deep in the Amazon jungle.

1. Aramu Muru

A massive red rock wall, jutting above the cratered moon-like landscape, was our introduction to the wild landscapes of Peru. An odd-shaped doorway leading nowhere was embedded deeply within it, flanked by two vertical shafts. No one knows exactly when this was built or by whom, but kneel down with your hands on either side, touch the wall with your forehead and you’ll sense this is a gateway to higher levels of consciousness . When I stood in the shafts the energy was so intense my body shook. Our sixteen-strong group became a family as we passed through this “initiation” at Aramu Muru, one of the most spiritually activating places to visit in Peru.

2. Lake Titicaca

At 4,000 meters above sea level it took a few days to feel safe on our feet—altitude sickness had us weaving like sailors on the shores of vast Lake Titicaca—a sight if there ever was one. The birthplace of the Andean God Viracocha: it is the highest navigable lake in the world, and local legend has it that there is an extra-terrestrially placed crystal city in its depths, making it one of the most interesting places to visit in Peru. Shambling down a steep incline to the lake are the Floating Islands of Uros, not far from the nearby town of Pruno, whose residents are of pre-Incan Aymaran descent.  Their custom is to weave everything out of reeds, the islands themselves, including their tiny homes, their beds and even their boats. They greeted us with huge smiles, and we danced to a traditional song, they in their brilliantly colored, tiered and tasselled clothes, and later bartered for similarly vibrant, hand-woven wall-hangings representing their mythical heritage.

3. amantani.

Three sun-drenched hours beyond the floating islands, the traffic-free village of Amantani rose from the water. Paved paths crawled straight up steep slopes into the past adobe farmhouses to the island’s twin peaks topped with temples dedicated to Pachatata and Pachamama (the male and female earth deities). Amantani is a charming place—an island far removed from the hectic modern pace of life where old women herd sheep, men carry huge bundles and the scent of sage wafts fragrantly in the air. With no hotels locals offer their homes and a feast of freshly caught trout, deliciously fried. This is a very authentic place to visit in Peru, well off the beaten path.

A sunrise ceremony to Viracocha had called us here. We endured a challenging walk in the dark, up the steep hillside, encouraged by birdsong; watching the light slip over the horizon was Biblical. The sun crested above distant mountains across the lake, a lone cloud spread its wings like a condor, our shaman held aloft a vessel of burning incense. The power of the moment was tangible to all present.

Next we hit Cusco, the historic Incan capital built on rolling hills in a valley surrounded by towering peaks. The tiny cobbled streets of the old city are bursting with fascinating shops, restaurants, and hotels for every taste and budget. The Inca Empire held sway between the 13th and 16th century when the Spanish conquistadors invaded, and you can see the influence of both wherever you go. The women and children in the street, resplendent in colorful clothes and ever-ready for a photo opportunity with llamas and bonneted lambs, are Inca descendants finding their way in a modern world.

An outer wall of a 14th-century palace, now the Museum of Religious Art, can be found on Hatun Ramiyoc Street. Logic-defying Inca masonry includes the famous twelve angled rock nestled perfectly into the surrounding stones. It seems random at first glance until, upon closer inspection, you see the repetitive design imbued with their mythological hieroglyphs. The condor, puma, and serpent are the main Andean trinity, their depictions found in jewelry and fabric designs as well as their sacred architecture .

Above Cusco spreads an extensive walled complex with over 200 archaeological sites: Sacsayhuaman. Dotted with goliath stones up to 300 tons, once again irregular patterns of jigsaw perfection boggled our minds. Historians claim it was some kind of Inca royal retreat or fortress, but if, as the experts claim, the Inca never used the wheel, is it possible they could have wielded these megaliths at all? According to our shaman guide water erosion at this site proved it was built prior to the last Ice Age and therefore can only have been discovered by the Inca. The debate continues in the academic community to this day over who, why, when, and how, making it a fascinating place to visit in Peru.

5. Sacred Valley

Heading North we dropped into the Sacred Valley. This incredibly fertile plateau winds between mountains that literally pulse with life. Most farmers in Peru still tend with ancient methods like gravity-defying terraces winding up mountainsides to produce coca, corn, potatoes and brown, orange and purple quinoa, among many other heirloom crops. While exploring the lofty ruins nestled above the town of Pisac, we walked alongside these deep-stepped agricultural terraces, our starting point for an inspiring downhill journey. Encroaching, craggy walls peppered with the holes of Inca graves guided us as we meandered through the maze of ruins, followed closely by a local musician serenading us with his flute.

At Urubamba we zig-zagged back up hill to Moray, where the main attraction is an ancient agricultural research center. In brilliant harmony with nature the Inca embedded circular terraces deep into an irregular bowl of the plateau, cleverly creating a series of microclimates. But despite the magnificent spectacle of it all, the Temple of the Sun—a smaller terraced amphitheater set in a hollow between snow-covered peaks overlooked by a glacier—was our true destination and easily one of the most spiritually powerful places in Peru. We followed our guide to the bottom and lay on the spiky grass, feet pointing inwards, our bodies like petals of a sunflower. Eyes closed, the heat of the sun and the rhythm of the shaman’s drum took us on a profound inner journey .

7. amazon rainforest.

Two weeks had evaporated in the spiritual haze of our travels, and it was time to swap the Andes for the heat and humidity of the Amazon Rainforest . The contrast of entering through the forest-locked city of Iquitos was a shock to our system—the calm of the mountains replaced by the loud frenetic energy of the jungle.

The discordance of Iquitos faded into the distance as the boat carried us to our next destination. Our home for the week was an oasis nestled amidst lush banana plants, huge palms, and towering trees. Chickens clucked, ducks waddled, lovebirds woo’d, macaws strutted their rainbow plumage. We let the jungle’s symphony of sound replace our mental chatter in deep reflection on the healing we were all after. If this is what you are seeking this is one of the places you must visit in Peru.

8. Sacred Ayahuasca Retreat

Ayahuasca is a sacred plant medicine revered for it’s healing and divinatory properties, reconnecting those who indulge its spirit directly to the divine. Considered a powerfully wise, sentient goddess, her popularity has increased in recent years, and retreats in the area are big business. Luckily for us, our ayahuasca experience was tended by the reverend Don Lucho, a pot-bellied man with infinite eyes, not some unscrupulous fake that are so easy to come by these days. We had four Ayahuasca ceremonies in the big round thatched hut—we each had a mat, pillow, blanket, and most importantly a bucket. If you didn’t know already, Ayahuasca is legendary for its purgative qualities, and proper diet pre and post journey are of the utmost importance. Music, incense, and tobacco created the sacred space, and ceremonies began at 7pm. One by one we’d kneel in front of the shaman to take our cup. Ayahuasca tasted like an unpleasant combination of very dark chocolate and coffee, drank down in one harsh gulp. Purging is an almost inevitable part of the process, cleaning out mental, emotional, and physical toxins accumulated over a lifetime of unconscious choices. This is not psychedelic fun but a deeply transformative and profound path of growth and a must-experience for spiritual travelers in Peru.

Ayahuasca seemed to somehow know exactly what we needed. I had visions of past lives and insights about the one I’m currently living. Most of us received the answers we came for. A man with chronic pain from an accident ten years previous reduced his medication by 80% without withdrawal symptoms.

Emerging from the depths of our soul, it was suddenly time to leave the jungle and say our goodbyes. We’d become a tribe at some point during the journey, going deep within ourselves, and emerging on the other side with the integrated wisdom that nothing is impossible to overcome. The synergy woven between the land, the ancient sites we visited, our facilitators, our guides, and our group delivered transformation far beyond anything we could have imagined, truly embodying the richness of the sacred grounds and culture of Peru.

Through many years of experience, we have discovered that the most suitable accommodation for an experiential mystical journey is a Retreat Center. The Retreat Centers we work with are very private and safe. They are nestled around magnificent landscapes that reflect back mysticism and quietness. Greatly expanded areas for retreating, walking, meditating or just process and integrate the ceremonies received. Accommodations are usually double occupancy, but single occupancy is also available. Our centers are owned by well-respected shamans. They have been designed and built with the intention to provide a safe haven for individuals interested in expanding and advancing spiritually. Relax, Reconnect and find Inner Peace.

Perú Sacred Tours designs, organize and coordinates all the activities for a group, couples or a person interested in working with the Herbalists Shamans of the Rainforest, the Q’ero Inca Priests of Cuzco and/or the Moche San Pedro Shamans of Chiclayo.

1) Shamanic Practices

Shamanic practices encompass a range of spiritual and healing rituals and techniques that are traditionally performed by shamans, who are regarded as intermediaries between the physical world and the spirit realm.

They often involve divination and oracle practices, healing, altered consciousness ceremonies and offerings to the spirit world.

These practices are found in various indigenous cultures worldwide and are deeply rooted in animistic beliefs, which hold that all elements of the natural world possess consciousness.

Here are some of the key practices in Peruvian Spirituality:

  • Ayahuasca Healing : Ayahuasca, a potent plant-based brew, is used in shamanic ceremonies for healing and spiritual insight. It is believed to allow individuals to connect with the spirit world, gain profound wisdom, and experience deep inner transformation.
  • Offerings to Water Sources : Bodies of water, such as rivers and lakes, are considered sacred in Peruvian spirituality. Offerings are made to these water sources to seek their protection and blessings and to show gratitude for the life-giving properties of water.
  • Inti Raymi – Festival of the Sun : This ancient Incan festival celebrates the Sun God, Inti. It involves elaborate ceremonies and rituals to honour the sun, which was crucial for agricultural success. It continues to be celebrated in various forms, particularly in Cusco.
  • Animal Spirits and Totems : Animals hold special significance in Peruvian spirituality, with each animal believed to embody unique qualities and energies. People may seek guidance or protection from specific animal spirits or totems.
  • Dream Interpretation : Dreams are considered a powerful medium for receiving messages from the spiritual realm. It is believed that dreams may hold guidance, warnings, or insights into one’s life path.
  • Energetic Cleansing : Spiritual cleansings, often using herbs such as Palo santo or Sage, are performed to clear negative energies from a person’s aura or living space. This practice is believed to restore balance and harmony to the individual.
  • Coca Leaf Reading : Coca leaves hold great significance in Andean spirituality. They are used in divination practices where a shaman or practitioner reads the patterns and symbols formed by the leaves to gain insights into a person’s life, future, and well-being.

2) Andean Cosmovision

Andean Cosmovision, also known as the Andean worldview, is an ancient belief system deeply rooted in the indigenous cultures of the Andes mountains, primarily the Quechua and Aymara people. Its origins trace back thousands of years before the Inca Empire and are intertwined with the region’s natural landscapes and spiritual energies.

At its core, Andean Cosmovision is founded on the belief that all elements of the natural world, from mountains and rivers to plants and animals, possess consciousness and are interconnected in a grand cosmic web. It is a holistic philosophy that views the universe as harmonious, interdependent and united.

A fundamental principle is the concept of “Ayni,” which embodies the idea of reciprocity and mutual exchange. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and giving back to the natural world. Offerings, ceremonies, and acts of kindness are expressions of ayni.

In modern times, Andean Cosmovision continues to be practised and adapted by indigenous communities and individuals seeking a deeper connection to nature and spirituality. Many traditional rituals, such as offerings to Pachamama and ceremonies honouring the Apus, persist.

3) Despacho Ceremony

The sacred Despacho ceremony, a cherished Andean tradition, is a profound homage to Mother Earth and the spiritual realm. This ritual involves crafting a mandala-like bundle of offerings, embodying the intentions of the ceremony.

The process commences with creating a consecrated space, inviting the spirits of the earth, mountains, elements, animals, sky, and ancestors. Flowers, leaves, and seeds are carefully arranged to form the Despacho, each item symbolizing the ceremony’s purpose.

These offerings are then infused with love and enfolded in sacred cloth before being presented to fire or water. The shaman, attuned to the energy of the bundle, determines the final destination. You’ll encounter a profound sense of harmony, balance, and blessings as a recipient.

4 ) Pachamama Offering

In Andean lore, Pachamama embodies the essence of earth and fertility, revered as the benevolent Mother Earth that provides sustenance, shelter, and support to all living beings. The ancient I ncas revered Pachamama, associating her with fertility and agricultural abundance, paying homage before the Spanish conquest.

Even today, Andean communities, including the city of Cusco, continue the practice of offering tributes to Pachamama during planting and harvesting seasons. These offerings, comprising food, drink, and symbolic representations of the earth and nature, signify respect and gratitude for the land’s abundant resources. The offerings are tenderly placed in a shallow hole and covered with earth, a gesture of returning these gifts to the nurturing embrace of Mother Earth.

4) Flower Bath Ritual

For centuries, Peruvians have embraced the transformative power of flower baths as a spiritual practice and a means of enhancing well-being. Across the globe, ancient cultures have celebrated this purifying and invigorating ritual, believing it fosters growth, alleviates negative energies, and promotes emotional balance.

The Shipibo tribe, an indigenous community of Peru, traditionally conducts these revitalizing baths in the morning or daytime. The choice of flowers for the bath is guided by intuition, with specific blooms believed to hold distinct healing properties.

To fully immerse in the rejuvenating effects, it’s advised to abstain from alcohol and meat for three days prior to and subsequent to the bath, as these substances can disrupt the energetic flow. The flower bath serves as a powerful conduit for transformation and healing in a world that often feels disorienting and disconnected.

5) Andean Energy Healing

Peruvian Andean energy healing practices are designed to harmonize the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of those seeking positive transformation and inner tranquillity. The influences of family, culture, education, work, and societal norms can sometimes lead individuals to feel disconnected from their authentic selves.

Furthermore, life experiences, including those of our ancestors, may impact overall well-being. Among Peru’s dedicated energy healers are practitioners schooled in the ancient wisdom of the Q’ero, a remote indigenous community. Their healing methods target crises, challenges, and suffering, offering solace during times of profound change.

6) Meditative Practices

Meditation holds a special place in Peruvian spirituality, providing a gateway to deeper connections with the natural world and the spiritual realm. Rooted in the Andean cosmovision, meditation in this context is a practice of stillness, introspection, and communion with the energies of the land.

It is a way to quiet the mind, open the heart, and commune with the energies of Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (mountain spirits). By entering a state of stillness, practitioners seek to harmonize their own energies with the greater flow of life.

F&Qs : Peruvian Spirituality

What are some unique peruvian spiritual beliefs or superstitions.

Peruvian superstitions find their roots in a deep-seated reverence for nature and the spiritual world. These beliefs have been shaped over centuries by a culture intimately intertwined with the natural landscape and the mysteries of existence. Here’s an exploration of why Peruvian spirituality embraces these superstitions:

  • Harmony with Nature : Peru’s rugged terrain, lush rainforests, and towering mountains have instilled a profound respect for the natural world. Superstitions, such as offerings to Pachamama and Apus, arise from the belief that nature is a living, conscious force. By respecting and appeasing these natural elements, Peruvians seek to maintain a harmonious relationship with their environment.
  • Ancestral Wisdom : Many of these beliefs and superstitions are passed down through generations. They serve as a link to ancestral knowledge and cultural heritage. The wisdom of the elders is valued and preserved, and these practices become a way of honouring those who came before.
  • Navigating Uncertainty : In a landscape as diverse and challenging as Peru’s, where the weather, terrain, and wildlife can be unpredictable, having rituals and beliefs provides a sense of control and predictability. Superstitions offer a way to understand and navigate the uncertainties of life, providing a sense of comfort and security.
  • Spiritual Connection : Peruvian spirituality strongly emphasises the interconnectedness of all things. Superstitions like coca leaf readings and Ayahuasca ceremonies are seen as a means to commune with the spiritual realm. They provide a conduit for seeking guidance, receiving insights, and connecting with higher forces.
  • Respect for Life and Death : Peru’s spiritual beliefs acknowledge the cyclical nature of life and death. Superstitions surrounding offerings to water sources and ceremonies like Despacho are rooted in the understanding that life is a continuous cycle, and acknowledging this cycle is a way to show reverence for the natural order of things.
  • Cultural Identity : These superstitions are fundamental to the cultural identity of the Peruvian people. They provide a sense of belonging and offer a framework for understanding the world. They are a source of pride and a way to differentiate themselves in a globalized society.
  • Healing and Well-being : Practices like flower baths and energetic cleansing are deeply ingrained in the belief that physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being are interconnected. These rituals are viewed as essential for maintaining balance and warding off negative energies that may affect one’s health.
  • Empowerment and Agency : Superstitions offer a sense of agency in a world that can often feel overwhelming. They provide individuals with tools to actively participate in their own spiritual and emotional well-being, empowering them to take charge of their destiny.

In essence, Peruvian superstitions are a reflection of a culture that places great value on the natural world, ancestral wisdom, and the interconnectedness of all beings. These beliefs serve as a source of guidance, comfort, and empowerment in navigating the complexities of life in a country known for its awe-inspiring landscapes and deep spiritual traditions.

What are some Legends and Folklore of Peru?

Peru boasts a rich tapestry of legends and folklore woven from ancient Incan beliefs, Spanish colonial influences, and indigenous traditions. Here are some of the most famous Peruvian legends and folklore:

  • El Cucuy de Huancabamba : A legendary creature said to inhabit the Huancabamba region, El Cucuy is described as a hairy, ape-like being with a fearsome appearance. It’s believed to dwell in the remote forests, striking fear into the hearts of those who venture too close.
  • La Dama Tapada : This enigmatic legend revolves around a veiled woman dressed in black who haunts the streets of Lima at night. It is said that she is searching for her lost love and is known to appear to unsuspecting passersby, leaving an air of mystery in her wake.
  • El Tunche : El Tunche is a malevolent spirit that is said to lurk in the dense Amazon rainforest. Described as a shadowy figure with glowing red eyes, El Tunche is believed to prey on those who wander too far into the depths of the jungle, instilling fear and paranoia.
  • El Sombrerón : Originating from Andean folklore, El Sombrerón is a mischievous spirit known for his distinctive attire, which includes a wide-brimmed hat and boots that make a distinct sound as he walks.  I wanted to have a spiritual journey and work on parts of me in a very focused environment.

My journey was incredibly personable. I went with an open mind to Perú. I tried things and did things I never thought I would, and I completely immerse myself in the environment. I’ll never forget climbing a mountain at Machu Picchu by far one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

There wasn’t one thing I enjoyed the most. I loved Machu Picchu, the moonlight outdoor bath, walking in the gardens at Willka Tika. But this was also a trip each woman actively worked to help the other one be a better person.

I was able to let go years of repressed anger and sadness. I came back a better person, with a more optimistic outlook on my daily life. I’m incredibly grateful for this experience.

My advice, book this trip immediately. It helped me realize the things that are important and the  things that aren’t. I loved all of our trips, our amazing Guide Silverio and Erika leading me on the journey. We had wonderful meals, went to great towns. I just loved everything about it. I loved the people I went with and the people I met. For me, I went on this trip not as a mom, not as a wife not as a daughter, but as me and that’s exactly what I worked on, myself.

I decided to take this trip because I have known Erika since 2016.  She is an amazing person, and excellent Yoga and Meditation Instructor.  I also needed to reconnect spiritually to my source, which I did while surroundings with the vibrations of the Mountains.

The experience was magical from the moment I was picked up at Cusco's airport.

The experience was magical from the moment I was picked up at Cusco's airport.  The hotels we stayed at were selected perfectly for us. The food was delicious.  Our tour guide and our driver were the best and such gentlemen making sure that we were safe and secure at all times.

Yoga and meditations were so spiritual and wonderful!

The tours and the hiking were amazing.  Each day we visited a different site.  I love the group setting and made many friends.

I enjoyed best the climb to Huayna Picchu, the mountain behind Machu Picchu.

At 61 years young, I thought "there is no way I can climb this."  The group and Erika were so full of encouragement.  I did it, and felt that was a milestone for me.  I felt that if I can climb all the way up Huayna Picchu, I can do anything in life!  This climb gave me confidence in myself. It was a spiritual climb!

If you are up for the adventure of your lifetime, spiritual enlightenment, and historical knowledge go on this trip.

I have known Erika for some time and know her approach to Self discovery and this trip presented me with the opportunity to be guided by her in my efforts to Self Remembrance.

My experience at the retreat was one of deep connection.  Erika and the team she chose to support us during the trip, were incredibly knowledgeable and made the whole adventure so much easier to navigate and integrate.

I gained clarity on some areas and felt like I received different tools that I can use as I continue my journey.  Self expansion is a gift that becomes part of you and is accessible always and this trip expanded my energetic understanding of the forces we work with on a daily basis.

If you take the time and read up on some of the Inca civilization and understand a little about their teachings and their sacred sites, this trip can be a great investment into your Self journey.  It is an opportunity to experience the different energies that nature is composed by as well as the energetic footprints that have been left by others to assist us.

  • 12 Reasons to Go on a Peru Meditation Retreat

by Amy Pattee Colvin | May 9, 2022

A meditation retreat to Peru offers a diverse array of gems for open-hearted, curious travelers looking for a spiritual adventure.

A Peru meditation retreat that focuses on Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, offers a vast array of experiences for open-hearted, curious travelers looking for a spiritual adventure.

Landscapes range from humid jungles to high mountain passes. Architectural and spiritual history intertwine with current cultures, and masterfully built Incan ruins seem to sprout from the earth.

At the height of its power, the Inca Empire stretched nearly 2,500 miles along the South American coast, encompassing territory in present-day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and even sections of Colombia. The Inca civilization expanded exponentially from 1200 to 1400 AD and ended suddenly in 1532 when Francisco Pizarro and his fellow Spaniards invaded.

However, during its reign, the Inca Empire achieved masterful feats of infrastructure and architecture, including fourteen-thousand miles of trails that linked one side of the empire to the other, the precise construction of buildings sturdy to remain standing today, and the formation of a unifying religion and language utilized by more than ten-million subjects.

Travelers often visit Peru to visit Machu Picchu, but many find their most vibrant memories are of the people, culture, and landscapes. Here are a few reasons to consider adding a Peru meditation retreat  to your wish list.

1. Stand in Awe of Ancient Architecture at Sacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuaman on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

The ruins at Sacsayhuaman are some of the most amazing in the world. Construction of this fortress on a high plateau began during the reign of Inca Pachacutec in the fifteenth century. Research suggests that more than twenty-thousand men extracted the stones from quarries twenty kilometers away, carving them onsite and then transporting these giant stones to the hill above the city of Cusco.

They then fit these perfectly cut stones together like a giant jigsaw puzzle, leaving nearly no gap between them.

Current estimates suggest that today Sacsayhuaman retains 40 percent of its original structure. Yet some existing stones weigh over 125  tons. How did the Incas build Sacsayhuaman and similar structures with the copper and stone tools available at the time? The answer remains a mystery.

2. Explore Cusco, a UNESCO Heritage Site

Lazy Beach is a wonderful place to relax and deepen your meditation practice.

Nestled in the Peruvian Andes, Cusco emerged under the Inca ruler Pachacutec into a complex urban center with distinct administrative and religious sections. Outside the central city lay areas for industry, agriculture, and artistry.

The Spaniards conquered Cusco in the 16th century, but they preserved the basic urban structure and built palaces and churches over the Incan ruins, integrating the existing architecture into their own.

Cusco sits at just over 11,000 feet, and you may notice mild symptoms of altitude sickness. Be content to explore slowly, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol in excess. Places to visit include the San Blas area of hilly scenic streets and the main town square, Plaza de Armas. Also worth a visit is Qorikiancha, the most important temple in the Incan empire and served as the foundation for the Convent of Santo Domingo, built by the Spanish in the seventeenth century.

3. Travel to Tipón

Visit Tipon on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

Tipón is a rarely visited archeological site constructed in the early fifteenth century, most likely as an imperial estate for the Inca elite.

The site may have been ceremonial, or it may have served as an architectural laboratory due to the various micro-climates within the site and the reliable year-round water flow.

Precise and right-angled terraces are clearly visible at this site, and a natural spring feeds an irrigation network of canals and fountains that still flow today. The design of this site illustrates that the Incas were excellent hydraulic engineers.

Harmonizing with the energy here, and perhaps practicing some qigong is a wonderful aspect of attending a Peru meditation retreat.

4. Engage With Past and Present Culture at Chinchero

Andean Weaver in Chinchero

On the high windswept Andean plains is a small village named Chinchero that offers beautiful views over the Sacred Valley and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay.

In Incan mythology, Chinchero is believed to be the birthplace of the rainbow, and certainly, its local and famous weavers integrate rich colors into their wares and traditional dress.

Taking in a weaving demonstration at one of the weaver co-operatives is a beautiful way to deepen your understanding of traditional culture. If you’d like to purchase Peruvian textiles, Chinchero is an excellent place to do so.

Archeologically, the site is attributed to Inca Tupac Yupanqui, who possibly used Chinchero as a country resort. Some of the agricultural terraces and aqueducts are still in use. You’ll find wonderful displays of Inca stonework throughout the site, including what was once a stone throne decorated with carvings.

As you look down the valley from the terraces, you’ll see an immense boulder, reached by an easy walk on an ancient Inca trail. The boulder has a staircase carved into it to reach the top, which consists of a maze of carved spaces. Carvings also represent the Inca spiritual trilogy—the serpent, the puma, and the condor.

5. Do a One Day Hike of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Visit Winay Wayna on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

The Inca Trail is one of the world’s best multi-day hikes, taking four days to walk the entire trail, ending in Machu Picchu. Fortunately, a one-day option is available! You’ll need to be in moderate to excellent physical condition to enjoy this hike.

Board the train in Ollantaytambo, bound for the town of Aguas Calientes, then disembark the train at distance marker 104.

The day hike, the final section of what is traditionally known as the Inca Trail, takes you along the Urubamba River valley as you climb up onto the mountainside—with a total elevation gain of about 1,700 feet.

You’ll find gorgeous mountain views, lush and diverse vegetation throughout the journey, and exquisite Inca ruins, including Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. An hour or so after exploring these ruins, you’ll arrive at the Sun Gate, where you’ll have your first view of Machu Picchu!

You’ll descend from the Sun Gate into the central Machu Picchu citadel and learn about its extraordinary history. Depending on the timing of your day, you may witness sunset at the ruins, a time with fewer tourists.

6. Explore Huayna Picchu and Temple of the Moon Cave

Near the top of Huayna Picchu on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

Huayna Picchu is the sharp peak at the edge of the Macchu Picchu citadel, and it is often featured in photos of the area. Hiking up the scenic trail leads you on stone stairways built by the Inca empire up a jungle-covered mountainside.

The hike is challenging but not technical and is appropriate for people with moderate or better fitness.

Despite the challenging terrain, this trail is in high demand, and only 400 hikers per day receive permits, so plan to book months in advance to reserve a spot.

As you start, you’ll have views of the Urubamba river, Putucusi mountain, and an array of dramatic green peaks in the distance. The hike itself is an uphill trek—sometimes shady and sometimes sunny as you move through switchbacks—on time-worn Inca stone stairways.

After half an hour or so of hiking, you’ll have your first views of the Machu Picchu citadel in the distance, highlighting the elevation you’ve gained. From here, the stairway is steeper and more narrow, and a steel cable handrail is available for balance. In this section of the trail, you’ll first encounter Inca terraces and buildings, which some say were once inhabited by Inca priests.

After qigong in the Temple of the Moon Cave, Machu Picchu

The last push to the summit requires climbing a final stone staircase. Though the drop-offs are steep, the path is wide, and the views are spectacular. Take your time and enjoy the experience!

Once you pass the last stone stairway, the summit of Huayna Picchu mountain is only a short distance away.

Soak in the views of the Machu Picchu citadel and the zigzag switchbacks of the road leading down to the Urubamba River and the town of Aguas Calientes. After basking in the views at the summit of Huayna Picchu mountain, leave the viewpoint and watch for a spur trail that sweeps around the backside of the mountain.

This path leads to the Temple of the Moon, an ancient ceremonial temple inside a cave. This awe-inspiring cave temple is not always open to hikers, but it is well worth visiting if you are able. If you’d like to make this detour, allow yourself an extra two to three hours of total hiking time.

7. Visit the Pre-Inca Ruins of Pumamarca

Visit Pumamarca on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

The rarely-visited Pumamarca ruins, away from the typical tourist trail, offer an opportunity to experience a slice of history peacefully and tranquilly.

The Wari civilization—pre-Inca—built this hillside fortress to guard an entrance to the Sacred Valley.

A network of ancient paths still leads to and from this site built on a steep slope above the convergence of the Yuracamayo river and Río Patachancha.

Eventually, the Inca overtook the Wari culture, and this site was likely used for ceremonies. It once again became a fortress during the Spanish invasion offering panoramic views over the valley below. Inside the fortress walls, the old village is in good shape, and you’ll find dwellings, granaries, and temples.

After exploring the site, you can walk back to the town of Ollantaytambo via an Inca trail. The walk takes about three hours at a gentle pace and offers views of Patachancha Valley, Inca terraces, and Inca aqueducts. Local farmers still use the terraces and irrigation system to produce potatoes, quinoa, corn and many other vegetables and fruit.

The ruins and the subsequent walk help you embody a connection to the past. What you witness today—flowing water, growing crops, community, and dramatic mountain landscapes—is not much different from thousands of years ago.

8. Wonder at the Circles of Moray

Circles of Moray on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

Moray is another Inca ruin in the Sacred Valley. The deep, circular terraced hollows are reminiscent of a Roman amphitheater.

The intention behind the development of these concentric terraces is still a mystery. However, a promising theory is that the ruins were once an Inca agricultural laboratory.

The terraces’ design, depth, and orientation to the sun and wind suggest they were built for a specific purpose. Based on elevation in relation to its neighbor, each terrace leads to temperature variances—ranging a full  27°F from top to bottom. The microclimates at each level allowed the Inca to study and modify wild vegetation creating crops suitable for human consumption.

Inca agriculturalists had excellent scientific and analytic thinking skills. They worked extensively with potato varieties, and now Peru is famous for its over two-thousand variations of potato. Also, studies show that the soil in Moray comes from various regions throughout Peru. The importation of soil supports the suggestion that Moray was an experimentation center. Inca engineering is also evident as these terraces never flood, even during the rainy season. A network of engineered channels permits the water to drain effectively.

9. View Maras Salt Flats

Visit Maras Salt Flats on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

Few places on earth still function as originally designed hundreds of years ago. The Maras Salt Mines, also known as the Maras Salt Flats, is an ancient site first used by the pre-Inca Chanapata culture.

For over 500 years, salt has been harvested daily from ponds carved into the mountainside.

Today, approximately 4,500 salt pans remain, each owned and harvested by a family, and each family participates in a collective to preserve their rights. The ponds vary in size based on the needs of the family who owns them.

The flats, fed by an ancient spring sourced from a prehistoric lake flow through a maze of canals to reach each well. Canals that feed each pan are opened and closed as desired, creating the opportunity to fill the pan, let it dry through evaporation, harvest the remaining salt, and refill it.

The pans themselves appear as a massive, human-created mosaic. Some are wet with a shiny surface; others are dry with piles of pinkish-white salt ready for bagging. The salt, coveted for its healing properties similar to those associated with the Dead Sea salt, has a delicate flavor.

10. Cross a Remote Andean Pass, and Visit Huchuy Qosqo Ruins

Cross an Andean pass on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

This is a gorgeous full-day hike, about 11 miles, through the Andes. As you begin, you wander up a U-shaped valley toward the head of a cirque.

You’ll see traces of ancient Inca footpaths, terraces, and aqueducts, and you’ll encounter few travelers but may see a few herders with wild horses or locals mule-packing supplies to their alpine homes.

After passing a beautiful tarn, you’ll climb more steeply toward the pass, gaining about 2,000 feet from the start of your walk. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. At the top of the pass, 14,410 feet, you’ll see a cairn, the view opens up, and you’ll see snow-capped peaks in the distance. Spread below you is a broad, gently sloping steppe that heads down into a few small villages.

Following an Incan trail on the way to Huchuy Qosqo on Amy Pattee Colvin's Peru Spiritual Adventure

After descending the arid grass-covered slope, you’ll reach a section of trail that drops steeply into a canyon whose walls are dotted with tropical-looking plants. This narrow canyon is truly spectacular.

You’re following an Inca stone path, and a stream with waterfalls cascades down the path beside you.

Around you is a vast array of plants, and birdsong echos off the canyon walls. The humid warmth of the canyon, contrasting with the windy steppes above, is astounding.

After dropping down the canyon for an hour or so, the trail flattens once again, and you traverse across a hillside toward the Huchuy Qosqo ruins, likely built by the eighth Incan Ruler, Viracocha. The preservation of these ruins is remarkable, and the views of the Vilcabamba mountain range are spectacular.

After relaxing and enjoying the ruins, you’ll embark on the final leg of the journey—a long steep switchback trail down to the town of Lamay. This is an excellent place to have hiking poles! At the end of the day, reflect on all you’ve seen and how few other travelers you encounter. You crossed a 14,000+ foot pass, walked on Inca footpaths, traveled broad grassy steppes and a narrow slot canyon, and visited a well-preserved ruin—quite an accomplishment!

11. Enjoy a Day in the Life of Urubamba

Peru Mototaxi

One of the most delightful aspects of traveling to Peru is spending time with friendly and warm local people. Opportunities to engage with local culture are widely available in Urubamba. Traveling by moto-taxi is an excellent way to get across town.

Perhaps you’ll have a cooking lesson complete with a visit to the local market. Learn and help prepare traditional Peruvian dishes.

Another option for enjoying local culture is visiting a chicha brewer. Chicha is a popular beverage in Peru made from fermented purple corn. You’ll have an opportunity to learn how this traditional drink is made as well as a chance to taste it.

You may also choose to visit an artisanal chocolatier. You’ll learn how to roast cacao beans, husk them, grind them and turn the subsequent chocolate paste into chocolate bars. You may even have a chance to sip some deliciously rich hot chocolate from the beans you just husked.

12. Visit the Pisac Ruins

Llamas at Pisac

The town is Pisac is a serene rural village 20 miles from Cusco. The town center has a vibrant market, but one of the most enchanting reasons to visit is the ruins found at the National Archeological Park of Pisac.

The ruins here are among Peru’s most extensive archeological sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Inca architecture was customarily built in the shape of animals, and Pisac is shaped like a partridge, thus its name. The ruins at Pisac include numerous archeological divisions, including cemeteries, aqueducts, bridges, platforms, palaces, walls, towers, and terraces. The masonry fits together so well no mortar was needed.

The ruins are grouped into four “neighborhoods,” with the most intriguing being the ceremonial center known as the Sun Temple. It is accessed through Amaru Punku, the Serpent Door, which once served as a guard post to prevent invaders from accessing the site. Once through the door, you pass through a sixteen-foot tunnel hollowed from the rock.

Then you arrive at the ceremonial center—the Sun Temple—a marvel of Inca stonemasonry. Carved largely of pink granite, the temple features a beautiful example of an intihuatana, a sundial used by Inca priests to chart the movements of the heavens and predict the solstices and equinoxes.

At Pisac, the intihuatana is carved directly into the rock and surrounded by a D-shaped temple, oriented to align perfectly with the sun on the June solstice. The Sun Temple also contains an altar for animal sacrifices and a ceremonial fount that still bubbles water today. Nearby, a three-tiered symbol alludes to Inca cosmology’s three worlds—heaven, earth, and the underworld.

We now begin to explore the main power spots and temples of this Sacred Crystal City, Machu Picchu as she shares some of her secrets with us.

September 18th – Monday – Day 5: Machu Picchu/Aguas Calientes

Leaving by bus early this morning to Machu Picchu, we will experience a sacred sunrise ceremony with Coca Man, a Pacc´o (shaman) in the Andean/Quechua community. This is a traditional way to begin the day by offering our blessings to the spirit of Pachamama (Earth Mother). Next, we will go as a group to the energetically powerful Sun Temple. You are then free to spend the remainder of the day at leisure in Machu Picchu, or do an optional hike to The Sun Gate, Huayna Picchu or The Temple of the Moon . You may also want to take some time to explore the many fascinating shops in Aguas Calientes.

  • Discover additional tools for navigating your life path in an uncertain world.

September 20th – Wednesday – Day 7: Cusco Ancient Sites

AyahuascaCusco ’ s history lives in its streets, squares, valleys and towns. This morning we travel to the outskirts of Cusco and visit the large ceremonial center of Sacsayhuaman , marked by the huge stone paw of The Puma. We gather for an introduction to the frequencies of this site, then walk along the zig-zag walls to feel the vibration of the frequencies and honor the culture that created this sacred site. Here we appreciate the size and precision of the stonework, each massive stone aligns perfectly with the stone next to it.

We will also visit Amaru Machay or the temple of knowledge, known as The Temple of the Moon, and other main Incan altar sites including: Tambo Machay where we connect with The Unu; water element balancing male and female. We explore the site of Qenqo where The Puma awakens. Moderate hiking is required.

After lunch we will return to Cusco. Enjoy the afternoon to shop, visit the cathedrals and explore the wonders of Cusco on your own.

OPTIONAL: In the evening there is an opportunity for anyone who chooses to experience Ayahuasca at a local temple with a shaman having 40 years’ experience. There will be a fee of US $220 per person.

September 21st – Thursday – Day 8: Cusco/Puno City

This morning we visit The Qoricancha Temple of The Sun . The architecture is fascinating! We then wander through other remains of palaces and temples with beautiful walls and typical streets, including the San Pedro Market (main market in town) allowing you a free afternoon. (BD)

September 22nd – Friday – Day 9: Cusco/Puno City

The Inca site of Tipon is our first stop this morning. At an elevation of 3,500 m. (11,480 Ft.), Tipon has beautiful rooms and gardens that were built with megalithic blocks of stone by Wiracocha as a royal house for his father Yahuar Huaca. Allow yourself to be transported into the past as you open in appreciation for the design of the 12 very fertile terraces with carved stone retaining walls. Even more remarkable is the irrigation system that is still serving agriculture. Its development took advantage of an existing water spring. These carved stone channels were precisely calculated. Some even create powerful vertical water falls. This entire design is a hydraulic engineering master work.

We transfer to the airport to take a flight to Juliaca City, where a private bus transports us to Puno for our time on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca.

Overnight: Taypikala Hotel, our lakeside hotel in Puno City. (BLD)

September 23th – Saturday – Day 10: Lake Titicaca/ Uros Islands/Taquile Island

We will board a boat to cruise on spectacular Lake Titicaca. You will find yourself captivated by the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians , who created these man-made reed islands centuries ago to live on, in order to escape the warfare throughout the area.

Today on Lake Titicaca we will be performing a special ceremony opening The 12 th Gateway of Awakened Consciousness.

Next stop: Taquile Island , a remote center of Incan culture surviving to this day. Here we enjoy the exhilarating feeling that emanates from within this sacred lake. W open to the soothing crystalline energy of Taquile Island as we explore the expansive views of Lake Titicaca. Shop for some of the finest hand-made knit items and intricate crafts that can be seen anywhere.

Overnight: Taypikala Hotel, Puno City. (BLD)

September 24th – Sunday – Day 11: Doorway of Lord Aramu Muru

Upon arrival at The Doorway of Lord Aramu Muru we will gather for a meditation and a ceremony allowing our souls to connect with the truth and beauty of who we are.

spiritual journey in peru

We will next experience Puerta de Hayu Marca , which translates to The Gate of the Gods; measuring 23 feet in both height and width. Situated on a plateau just off the western banks of Lake Titicaca, it appears to be a doorway to nowhere carved into a rock face. Indeed, Hayu Marca is considered an inter-dimensional portal where our inner temple may be able to access higher states of consciousness. Here an indigenous Shaman will perform a traditional ceremony. What better way to conclude our Sacred Journey into the mysteries of Peru! From here we will return to our hotel.

Overnight: Taypikala Hotel, Puno City – (BLD)

"Starting the Andean Shamanic path feels like a homecoming. The Travel and Healing & Sonqo family have created a platform for me to begin my path and I am truly grateful to them for all their love and kindness. I was guided to this  workshop and it has been the best decision I have made. Learning about the Pachamama/mother earth offering in the Andean tradition is such a blessing and it will become an integral part of my life. Being guided by Maestro Danilo gave me the skills and tools that will enable me to contribute to Pachamama and bring balance back to our world. This course opened me to a whole new way of praying and offering my gratitude to Pachamama for all that she gives and has given to us. They also have this wonderful opportunity to learn online as one can easily refer to the videos which explains the process and elements of the offering and the T&H family are always there to help."

“My sons and I booked the Salkantay together this spring to heal from a traumatic incident within our family. I just decided to take them into the mountains for a while but am not an alpinist myself so the Spiritual Salkantay offered by Travel and Healing was just the perfect opportunity for us. I would have never expected such a heart-warming atmosphere on a hiking trail, to be honest. Every single person of the staff was just so friendly. We could really let ourselves go on the way and just dive into nature, without worrying about anything else. Especially my younger son went through a deep transformation through these days and even stayed in Cusco after our trek to engage in volunteering activities for a while. I am very grateful and happy we did this, as it brought us more together again as a family. Thank you all for your kindness and effort, it is highly appreciated.”

“I joined a group spontaneously after my Ayahuasca ceremony in San Salvador. Angels family did a great job and I felt very safe from the very beginning of our retreat. After this, I had a strong feeling to move my body in order to regain my connection again. Angel just organized everything from one day to the other and I found myself on the Salkantay just some days after my retreat ended. The deep talks and special time our shaman took for me was what I needed after the process I went through. I am forever thankful for his time and loving words and will never forget the day we arrived at Machu Picchu. I did not just arrive at that sight but at myself.. Thank you so much. “

What our clients are saying.

While many tourists come to Peru to see the country’s many spectacular sites, like Machu Picchu , Cusco , and the Amazon Jungle , many more flock to Peru for its spiritual elements and mysteries. From sacred mountains, called Apu, to protective spirits and ancient legends, Peru and its indigenous cultures are rooted in spirituality.

If you spend any time around Cusco and the Sacred Valley while traveling in Peru, you may come across coca leaf readings and ceremonies to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Below, we’ll share a few ancient legends that have played a role in keeping Peru’s spiritual identity alive and breathing.

The Earthquake that Saved the Q’ero People

Spiritual-Peru-Qero-People

The Q’ero people dwell in six major villages in the Paucartambo district of Cusco, in remote areas high up in the mountains. They have a time-honored oral tradition as storytellers, passing their legends down through the generations. According to one of these legends, the Q’ero people fled high up into the Apus when the Spanish conquerors arrived, taking their beliefs and practices with them. The Apus protected them by manifesting an earthquake that buried their pursuers near a place known as Wiraquchapampa. The Q’ero stayed hidden in the high Apus, keeping their mystical practices and beliefs hidden for 500 years.

The Eagle and the Condor

There is an ancient Inca legend that tells of ‘The Eagle and the Condor’. It states that from 1490 and for the following 500 years, the Eagle would become so powerful as to nearly wipe out the Condor, but that beginning in the year 1990, the possibility would arise for the Eagle and the Condor to come together and exchange knowledge, eliminating the duality that valued one way of understanding over another. Some have interpreted this legend to mean that the Eagle and the Condor represent human society dividing into two paths. The path of the Eagle is the path of the rational, material and masculine aspects of humanity and the path of the Condor is the intuitive, heartfelt and feminine aspect. The Eagle’s near elimination of the Condor can be interpreted as a metaphor for the 500-year oppression of indigenous people in the Americas and other parts of the world.

The Paqo Prophecy

The paqo, or spiritual leaders, of the Q’ero people say that, beginning in 1990, the time would come for their beliefs to be shared with people who would arrive from outside of their villages. People would arrive from the North, who were thirsty for spiritual knowledge and a return to the sacred. These people would, in turn, share their technological and scientific ways of viewing the world with the South. When these belief systems came together, a new era of peace and understanding would arise for humanity.

It is believed that the time of the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Eagle and Condor has now arrived. We, too, have seen a huge influx of spiritual seekers to Peru over the recent decades seeking to benefit from the kind of wisdom and understanding that still exists in this mystical country.

Embark on a Soulful Expedition: The Ultimate Guide to Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

spiritual journey in peru

Introduction to an Ayahuasca retreat in Peru

Peru has become a popular destination for seekers of ayahuasca experiences, offering an opportunity to explore the depths of consciousness. An ayahuasca retreat in Peru gives an opening to probe the innermost depths of one’s being and explore unknown planes of awareness that could lead to a meaningful transformation.

From preparation before attending an ayahuasca healing center to understanding the role shamans play during the ayahuasca retreats and ceremonies, this article will guide you through all aspects of planning to attend an ayahuasca shamanic healing center so that you can make sure it’s as safe and successful as possible.

What is Ayahuasca?

The ayahuasca vine is a powerful traditional plant medicine native to the Amazon rainforest. For centuries, indigenous populations have used the ayahuasca plant for spiritual and medicinal rituals; this practice is still in use today, with traditional ayahuasca ceremonies dedicated to preparing ancient medicinal plants for the consumption of people in need of deep healing.

The Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis shrub are combined to form ayahuasca, a powerful traditional plant medicine. When consumed, ayahuasca induces intense visual and auditory hallucinations, emotional insight, physical purging (vomiting or diarrhea), altered states of consciousness, and profound spiritual experiences.

Peru and Ayahuasca

Peru has seen a surge in the popularity of ayahuasca retreats over the last decade as individuals look to these potent plant medicines for personal transformation and healing.

These retreats typically involve spending several days or weeks at an ayahuasca center, where participants participate in multiple ayahuasca ceremonies with experienced shamans guiding them through their experience.

During this time, they also participate in other activities such as yoga classes, meditation sessions, and workshops on shamanic practices like energy work or lucid dreaming techniques that help prepare them for their journey with ayahuasca.

What is it like to be in a retreat?

At an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, you can expect to be immersed in a supportive environment surrounded by like-minded individuals, all seeking transformation through this ancient healing practice with the sacred plants themselves. The atmosphere is usually one of openness and acceptance, where everyone feels safe enough to share their stories without judgment or criticism from others.

You will likely be staying at a comfortable facility that provides meals throughout your stay, so you don’t have to worry about preparing food yourself during your ceremony days when it is important not to eat anything heavy before drinking the sacred medicine.

Additionally, while enjoying your stay, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore nature walks, nearby riverside hikes, cultural excursions, visits to local villages, music events, etc..

Safety First

Ayahuasca, a potent and ancient medicinal remedy used by various cultures globally, is accessible to experience in Peru’s secure atmosphere. Attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru can be life-changing, so let’s explore why it may be beneficial.

Grow and Heal

Ayahuasca retreats in Peru offer a unique opportunity for personal and spiritual growth and healing, with experienced shamans guiding participants through powerful ceremonies while allowing them to explore the local culture. By immersing themselves in this supportive environment, individuals can gain profound spiritual insight and transformative experiences as they journey toward self-discovery.

Embark on a Soulful Expedition: The Ultimate Guide to Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

Why attend an ayahuasca retreat in Peru

An ayahuasca retreat in Peru offers just that. The Ayahuasca experience, a time-honored custom of Amazon Basin natives, has been gaining traction with globetrotters looking to expand their horizons and undergo a profound alteration.

Attending one of the many ayahuasca retreats in Peru provides access to traditional healing practices, cultural immersion, and learning some of Peruvian Shamanism’s extensive shamanic healing knowledge while connecting with nature in a safe, legal environment.

Who guides the ceremonies?

When attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, you’ll gain access to traditional healing practices from the curanderos, indigenous healers, or local village shamans who have been using the ayahuasca vine and other medicinal plants for centuries.

Before participating in one of the many ayahuasca ceremonies, you can prepare yourself mentally by learning about the spiritual aspects of taking ayahuasca. You can also take part in long hikes through the Amazon rainforest, exposing you to various plant medicines integral to traditional ceremonies.

In addition to gaining knowledge about ancient traditions related to ayahuasca use, attending one of the many amazing ayahuasca retreats allows for deep personal exploration and transformation while immersed in a beautiful natural setting.

The remote location of many Peruvian centers provides peace and serenity away from everyday stressors allowing visitors time away from their regular lives to focus on self-discovery without distractions or interruptions. It is also beneficial because it gives people a chance to connect with other like-minded individuals who share similar interests, which often results in forming strong friendships that last beyond the duration of one’s trip

Finally, when choosing an ayahuasca destination such as Peru over other countries such as Costa Rica or Colombia, there are certain advantages, including safety due to its legal status within certain regions (ie, Iquitos, the Sacred Valley, or Cusco). This means participants won’t have to worry about getting into trouble with authorities if caught taking part in some of these ayahuasca retreats, which often occur when visiting places where regulations aren’t clearly defined.

Additionally, those traveling abroad get insight into indigenous cultures, such as the Shipibo healers, by interacting directly with locals during their stay, making for more meaningful experiences than reading books about them back home.

Whether someone is interested in exploring ayahuasca shamanism, spirituality, connecting deeply with nature, or having transformative experiences – attending one of the Ayahuasca ceremonies In Peru offers all this and more. With its combination of physical beauty, rich culture, profound teachings, and connections made along the way – it truly stands out amongst other destinations around South America.

The ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru may offer a transformative journey for those seeking to delve deep into their inner and spiritual well-being. With that said, it’s essential to know what to expect when attending such a retreat so as not to be taken off guard by any surprises.

Attending an authentic ayahuasca retreat in Peru provides a unique chance to connect with ancestral healing rituals, experience the surrounding culture and landscape, and undergo a life-altering journey – all within legal parameters. The Role of Shamans During the Ayahuasca Ceremonies in Peru

Shamans are integral to ayahuasca retreats in Peru, as they are the ones who guide participants through healing ceremonies.

Shamans possess expertise in using ancient healing practices and herbs and are well-versed in their spiritual potential. They provide an essential link between physical and spiritual realms, allowing for powerful experiences that can help heal physical and emotional issues.

During an ayahuasca retreat, shamans will lead participants through rituals that involve chanting, drumming, singing, dancing, and more.

These activities aim to create a safe space where individuals can open up spiritually and access deeper levels of consciousness.

By facilitating healing on both a mental/emotional and physical level, shamans guide participants to gain insight into how their life circumstances can influence them.

The personal shamanic treatments aim to guarantee a secure ayahuasca ceremony, providing assistance and monitoring for any likely risks of emotional trauma or adverse effects of the intense experience.

Shamans often act as mediators between humans and nature spirits or deities during these sessions; they may call upon certain energies or entities to help bring about transformation within individuals participating in the ceremony.

The shaman’s role doesn’t end with leading ceremonial activities at an ayahuasca retreat center in Peru; they also provide one-on-one consultations to participants before and after the ceremony.

This allows them to address any questions or concerns about the experience, reflect on what happened afterward, and get advice from a seasoned expert in plant medicine work.

Ultimately, this ensures that everyone involved gets something meaningful out of it – whether it was a one-off event or part of a series – by providing an opportunity for further integration into everyday life following the ceremony.

The role of shamans during an ayahuasca retreat in Peru is essential for creating a safe and meaningful experience, providing guidance and insight throughout the journey.

Integrating Your Experience After an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

After an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, integrating your experience can be challenging yet rewarding. It is essential to remember that the revelations and curative benefits from ayahuasca rituals should be incorporated into daily life. This can be done by focusing on developing practices that will support your spiritual growth and transformation.

One way to do this is by creating rituals or activities around self-care. Incorporating yoga, or meditation classes, journaling, and breathwork – or any other activity that helps one feel connected to themselves – may be advantageous for assimilating the revelations from an ayahuasca ceremony into everyday life. Additionally, engaging with nature and spending time outdoors can help ground your energy after a powerful experience with plant medicine.

Connecting with those who have had similar experiences can be beneficial when reintegrating an ayahuasca retreat into everyday life, as they may provide much-needed support. Being part of a community of individuals who understand what you’ve been through and have gone through similar journeys can provide much-needed support during this transition period back home.

Joining online forums or attending workshops led by experienced shamans or facilitators may also offer helpful guidance for navigating post-retreat integration challenges, such as managing emotions or dealing with reintegration issues within family dynamics.

Finally, one key element of successful integration after spending time at one of the many ayahuasca retreat centers in Peru is honoring any commitments made while under the influence of the ayahuasca medicine itself – whether they were verbalized out loud during the ceremony or kept internally as intentions set forth at the start of each session.

Taking action towards achieving these promises serves as a reminder and reinforces our capacity for transformation, which was so powerfully revealed during ceremony time in sacred space. This may involve changing certain habits (e.g., diet), making lifestyle adjustments (e.g., career change), or committing more deeply to spiritual practice(e .g., prayer).

Integrating your experience after an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru is essential for long-term healing and growth. It’s important to consider safety when planning a day ayahuasca retreat, which we will discuss further in the next heading.

Integrating the teachings gleaned from a Peru ayahuasca retreat can be tricky, yet by engaging in self-care activities such as yoga or meditation and connecting with those who have experienced comparable journeys, and one can fulfill any pledges made while under the sacred plant medicine that’s effected. What is healing? And what is the call of our souls?

There is a world beyond what our eyes can see-- and a way of living that has been largely unavailable to most of us in the modern, western world. It is evident in our broken hearts, our sick bodies, our lost pathways and our aching communities and partnerships.

But there is another world, another way, another pathway home.

We have have forgotten, but there is a call for each of us. There is a call to deep healing, to re-forming bonds between human and land, to re-membering the lost parts of our selves. There is a call to the truth of our souls. And there is a call that we might share that truth with this beautiful, broken world and become healers-- healers of businesses, of families, of communities, of Pachamama, of our planet home.

Is this the call for you?

Girl in the Woods

This is our call.

In October 2024, shamanic healers and medicine men Angell Deer & Daya Nima Das will lead 14 souls' journeys to the Sacred Valley of Peru to remember-- re-member themselves that they might re-member this world.

Using journeys with the sacred plant medicines of the Amazon and the Andes, alongside daily ceremony, sacred shamanic rituals, journeys to Incan ruins, traditional ancestral initiation in the Apu Ausangate, guided journeys to craftsman villages, and more, we will tap into the sacred culture and indigenous wisdom of the Peruvian Andes and their Earthkeepers.

Together, in sacred space with the Apus (mountain spirits), the star beings, Pachamama (Mother Earth) and one another, we will re-member who we truly are, opening up doorways to divine healing within each other and this planet we call home.

LODGING AT OUR PRIVATE RETREAT LODGE

The Sacred Valley is a region in the Andean Highlands of Peru and is located along the Urubamba River, which the local Quechua people call “the lover of the Milky Way Galaxy.” Located an hour from Cuzco, it is home to some of the most majestic and magical pre-Incan archeological sites and energetically powerful Apus (mountains) in all of Peru.

Our retreat will take place at an exceptional private lodge, a highly-rated guest ranch a 5-minute drive from the town of Pisac with its private garden, organic garden, private lodges, etc.

All of our work will take place on the property with Angell and Daya or in ceremonial spaces throughout the Sacred Valley. Our rooms are shared occupancy for 2 with a private bathroom. All rooms have attached bathrooms, and include breakfast and lunch or dinner every day with our private chef (depending on the ceremony schedule).

Testimonials

“In the five years that I’ve been doing shamanic (and all types of) healing work, the clarity and deep clearing that I experienced on this trip were among most profound I’ve experienced to date. The space facilitated by Jane and Angell, and the Plant Medicines, allowed for very tightly held beliefs, patterns, and structures to be unearthed during the trip - ones that I didn’t fully know were there and that I hadn’t allowed myself to see until taking the time for myself and investing in myself in this way. Even one week after the trip, I am still very much in a healing and integration process, uncovering even deeper truths that the medicine of this trip helped to show me. Jane and Angell work beautifully together and are incredible at holding the space for your own healing to occur. Their knowledge of the medicine, and more importantly, their relatability, make you feel very comfortable, and in a space free from judgment, comparison, or hierarchy. I felt very at ease knowing that I didn’t have to be the healer or the expert that week, and that I could just be me, free from labels or expectations. Coming away from the experience, I feel I have a deeper understanding of who I am, and also, 13 new friends and soul connections with whom we shared profound transformation. This is a trip that I believe everyone needs to grant themselves the opportunity to take in their lifetime - the sooner, the better.” - Sarah Petruno

“There are not words that can adequately describe how healing and transformative my journey in Peru with Angell and Miriam has been for my heart, mind, body, and spirit... ! How do you write about a heart that you didn’t even know was guarded being blown open wide and flooding with love? How do you write about how a body wounded with cancer, chemo, and radiation fills with water, then cleanses all the illness and toxins out, leaving it clean? How do you write about how it feels to have music move in you again and call you to sing and dance as though you’d just been born into the world? How do you write about trauma being released from your cells in an intimate, powerful, life-changing healing process, completing old histories and releasing them back to the ether? How do you write about shamans and medicine women who’s service calls you to incredible reverence and deep awe? How do you write about the connection and love in a group that feels so safe, so strong, that your only option is to open up and heal? How do you write about purpose being illuminated, service being defined, and my own medicine/my own offering waking up in me? My gratitude is boundless. My heart is forever changed, opened, healed, and transformed. My teachers, Angell and Miriam, hold such beautiful space, creating a container for healing that is so transformative and so powerful. Their grasp and understandings of how to heal are deep and ancient, based on the truth of the human experience, grounded in body and soul, and anchored in spirit. Within our human design, there is our capacity to heal, and once this capacity is awakened, anything is possible. And now, we all embrace our next steps forward, with our hearts and minds so open to this incredibly beautiful“ ceremony of life”. !Aho!” - Colleen Karuna Kali (May 2019)

“My experience with sacred medicines and living in the heart of the mountains was a miracle. I started to reconnect with my higher self and my guardians. I started to remember where I come from and how beloved, blessed and protected I am… I was very happy with the way that Jane and Angell planned each day of the journey... walking in the process of each medicine was very clear and different for me, and now I realize that my transformation-- how they all work together to lead me to my true path that I need to walk in. After all, I remembered the forgotten truth inside me was the heart I had kept closed my whole life. Now I am open to everything and I welcome all the things that God brings in my path.

” - Anita, December 2017

“Everything about my time was Magical. The curation was flawless, from the meticulous, profound ceremonies to the way we were cared for. My experience as a witness to the healing all those around me was not only inspiring but a big part of my own heart opening.” - Anthony N.

“There are many reasons to attend the Peru Shamanic Journey retreat that Angell hosts in Peru. I will speak to my personal reasons. One is that I love adventure and learning about other cultures and am trying to say yes to opportunities presented by the universe. I wish to realize our connection with nature and to express that connection through my art and life. Also, importantly, I wanted to get off some meds that I had been depending on - which I am sure many can identify with in this upside-down society - for anxiety and for sleep. The pre-retreat diet to prepare for the retreat helped eliminate those ‘supplements’ from my routine which was a real benefit of the trip. Over the course of the journey, there were intense and beautiful experiences. One day was especially challenging when combining the altitude with strenuous hiking but I put one foot in front of the other. I realized that there is no destination, only the present experience.

The shaman guides who led the ceremonies during were just amazing and the participants, from diverse backgrounds, developed wonderful bonds. The landscape was sacred and awe-inspiring; the retreat was truly a gift for the body and the spirit.”

- Marriott S.

“The retreat was really well organized. We just had to show up and do the medicine work. It was great to not have to worry about lodging, commuting, etc. Also, Angell and Jane did a fantastic job at holding space for us, guiding and supporting us through our individual journeys. Now let’s talk about the spiritual side... I’m speechless!! What I’m feeling and thinking after the retreat is something so magical that is difficult to put into words. Perhaps is a combination of peacefulness and understanding that has me focused and present a lot more than I was before. I have a sense of self-love and surrendering to what is that I had not experience in a long time or ever. I’m deeply thankful for this retreat and the connection that has created for us with ourselves, others, our planet and our ancestors. The journey continues. This is the beginning of openness and miracles. I can see myself doing this retreat again, no doubt. Thank you so much!” - Maria Luisa

“My shamanic medicine journey to Peru was an experience that I will always hold dear to my heart. I felt safe, nurtured, connected, inspired, and held during a time of deep transformation and healing. The facilitators did an excellent job curating the whole experience, but also gave us the space to do our inner work. The locations in which we stayed and held ceremony were beyond my expectations. The sacred valley is one of the most beautiful and high vibrational places I've visited in the world. I have done medicine work for the past decade (though I have never done Huachuma prior to this retreat). I was deeply humbled by the way the teachers/shaman's led ceremony (it was so beautiful it brought me to tears several times). Many of the people in my group had never done medicine work before, and they felt safe and cared for throughout the entire week-all of us did. I am feeling more connected to myself, Great Spirit, PachaMama, my ancestors and other beings than I ever have. The medicine is still running through my heart and veins, and I am still doing transformational work upon my integration back home. I feel like I am fully back on my spiritual path, and am able to show up in this world in a way that I haven't before. I will be going back to do ceremony in Pisac as soon as possible to continue my sacred work. Let yourself be guided by your call to the medicine. Your heart will thank you <3”

“I have to say, Peru was undeniably thee most life changing experience I have ever had. I traveled alone, to an unknown part of the world, with an open heart and an open mind. I was immediately welcomed by the warmest souls on the planet. My journey was just that, my journey! Although I was in a group of 12 other people, I was able to maintain focus on my own personal journey. I felt safe, was given space, completely supported, and was able to heal. Angell and Jane were a dynamic duo, both intuitively present when needed. They opened their hearts and cared for us like a family. Each day of the week had it's own complexity of healing, so I am grateful that they held space for me along with the plant medicines. Words cannot describe the path that I was so blessed and honored to be a part of in Peru, so I highly suggest you join The Sanctuary ( www.thesanctuaryheal.com ) on their next excursion and discover all the healing for yourself.

Thank you for all your time and meticulous planning! I would do it again and again with you...” - Anita, December 2017

Two pilgrims follow a yellow waymark on the Camino de Santiago.

The Guardian view on pilgrimage: a 21st-century spiritual exercise

As a recent BBC series confirms, the idea of a spiritual journey has survived the decline of organised religion

I n Geoffrey Chaucer’s England, the arrival of spring was taken by many as a cue to take to the road. As the prologue to The Canterbury Tales begins: “When in April the sweet showers fall/And pierce the drought of March to the root, and all/…Then people long to go on pilgrimages”.

Given Britain’s increasingly damp climate, contemporary pilgrims are as likely to encounter persistent rain as the occasional sweet shower. But the participants in the BBC’s sixth Pilgrimage series, which ended on Friday, were largely blessed with fine days as they travelled by foot and bus across North Wales. Travelling the Pilgrim’s Way, the group of minor celebrities followed a Christianity-based route-map of shrines and churches, but also stayed at an eco retreat and a Buddhist meditation centre.

Including on this occasion a lapsed Muslim comic, and a star from the first series of Traitors, this was unusual reality television. No one is voted off Pilgrimage and the ethos is collegiate rather than competitive. That in itself is refreshing. But the show’s long-running success also testifies to the popularity of an activity that has undergone a remarkable 21st-century renaissance. This spring, thousands of Britons will join walkers from around the world on the Camino de Santiago, the most famous Christian pilgrimage route of all. In the early 1980s, the numbers completing the Camino were in the early hundreds; last year a record 446,000 did enough to earn an official certificate. Across the rest of Europe, trails are being reopened.

There is no single explanation for the phenomenon. Many of those on the move will not belong to any church. One Spanish study of Camino walkers between 2007 and 2010 found that 28% – easily the biggest category – said they were there for spiritual reasons, which will mean different things to different people. Some pilgrims may be hiking for charity, and some to leave a dark period in their lives behind. Others may go in memory of a loved one, or for the glories of the landscape, or to clear their minds.

Given the growing numbers, something is working. To undertake a journey can be both clarifying and transformative. Thresholds are crossed, literally and figuratively. In David Lodge’s 1990s novel Therapy , a character on the Camino who recently lost her son says she needed “something quite challenging and defined, something that would occupy your whole self, body and soul”. In North Wales, some of the BBC’s Pilgrimage participants movingly found solace in working – and walking – through the pain of bereavement and loss.

The world’s major religious traditions, which all place a high value on pilgrimage, have long understood this dynamic. In the secularised west, the current revival suggests that spiritual journeying will comfortably survive the decline of churchgoing. The practice has, after all, outlived more direct threats in the past. The springtime expeditions that Chaucer depicted were suppressed in 1538 by Henry VIII’s consigliere, Thomas Cromwell, who viewed pilgrimage as a form of idolatrous superstition. Five centuries later, that argument hasn’t aged well.
