Cdot launches new, user-friendly road condition and travel planner website and mobile app.

Screenshot of the new interactive map with customizable layers on cotrip.org.

New features to the interactive map on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s COtrip.org are intended to make it easier for drivers to safely navigate Colorado roads.

CDOT  launched the updated website Sept. 29, touting new tools that will help travelers plan their route in advance and be prepared for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions. COtrip.org has been in use for nearly two decades.

“This is an exciting time for our agency,” said Bob Fifer, CDOT’s branch manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services. “We are evolving legacy systems to better serve the traveling public. The new website brings more of our transportation technologies into one lense, improving the customer experience. We added several new features, while reducing system maintenance costs. Now, travelers can customize routes from point A to point B to see if their trip may be impacted by any road or lane closures. Motorists will have an easier time identifying road closures, road conditions and construction impacts, all while replacing outdated technologies.”

The new website incorporates the following new features:

Traveler Information & Layers

The COtrip website is powered by a dynamic Google Map™. Motorists can use the map as they would any Google map and click on the icons for more information. Icons are displayed on the map by checking or unchecking the boxes in the layers toolbar. Layers available and what data they provide are described here.

Trucker’s Layers

The new Trucker Mode features resources specific to commercial motor vehicle operators, including the following layers defined here.

My COtrip & Travel Alerts

Motorists can log-in in or sign up here for their own COtrip account to subscribe and manage their travel alerts. They can also save their favorite routes and cameras, and customize their travel preferences.

COtrip on Social Media

COtrip traveler information is automatically posted to the @ColoradoDOT Twitter feed. New roadway hashtags and Twitter threads were rolled out in Spring 2021, making it easier for users to track and stay updated on closures and incidents from CDOT. Follow @ColoradoDOT on Twitter for real-time travel information and road conditions.

511 Telephone Service

The 511 telephone service is an interactive, voice-activated traffic information system motorists can access by calling 511 (within Colorado) or 1-800-288-1047 (nationwide). This system has not changed, and will continue to provide a real-time option for travelers to get road conditions and traffic information. Learn more about 511 and how to use this service here.

“The updated website will be a great new tool for the public, however, we also wanted to bring the same information to your mobile device. ” said Fifer. “With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that we are also launching a brand new mobile app on Oct. 1. Now travelers will be conveniently informed no matter where they go. We are committed to continuously improving access to highway information and technologies.”

The new COtrip Planner mobile app was designed to meet the growing trend of information on mobile and tablet devices for the traveling public. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on smartphones and tablets that operate on iOS and Android platforms. Download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play Store starting on Oct. 1.

The app will be fully implemented in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Oct. 1

Traveler app with hands-free, eyes free functionality with customized CDOT layers now available

  • Phase 2: Fall 2021

Winter-specific layers including weather warnings, weather stations, plow tracker with CDOT snowplow contest names, and Express Lanes

  • Phase 3: Winter 2021/2022

My COtrip accounts integrated and new map search functionality, including event and camera clustering, predefined routes/areas, and adding an electronic sign layer

Social sharing of cameras and road conditions will also be available

  • Future State

Turn-by-turn directions and recommended routes to user mapping app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze)

Alert banners and push notifications

Rockfall and wildlife reporting

The COtrip Planner app also includes a feature called TellMe, which enables app users to be hands-free on their route. TellMe detects the user’s current location, speed and direction of travel to announce upcoming road conditions and traffic incidents as they travel along their route.

“We want Coloradans and visitors to our great state to have all of the information they need to plan a safe trip, no matter where they go on our state highways and interstates,” said Fifer. “We hope all drivers will take advantage of the website and mobile app before getting into their vehicles for a safe and more convenient trip as both tools will help to eliminate any ‘surprises’ on the roadway.”

One app to rule them all

As an Over The Road truck driver who travels across CO/WY weekly, this app has proven to be near perfect. Not only has it combined the data I usually get from numerous apps but it also makes getting camera views so much easier. Also one of the main features it has is the notification when a road alert has been removed, which isn’t available with the official state 511 apps. What used to take a good amount of time to trip plan is now accomplished in just a couple of minutes. Developer was quick to respond to a suggestion I had and followed up with me. Highly recommend it for anyone traveling.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the review!!!

Great data aggregator in user friendly format

This lone soldier has done something that CDOT dared not do - actually aggregated all of the available data into an easy to digest format in a stable, modern app. Google was telling me there was, of course, a 29 minute delay on my way to Broomfield last night because of a crash. I used this app to pull up the cameras on 25 to see if the crash was still there. It was not only still there, but traffic was dead stopped. By looking at the cameras, we were able to see that the express lanes were empty and unaffected. As a result we took the express land and blew past stopped traffic at 65, saving us at least 30 minutes.
Thank you for the review!  Great to hear the app was useful for you!

Absolutely outstanding. Could save lives.

Downloaded this app in preparation for a trip across Colorado along I-70 crossing the entire state in February. Since February can be a brutal weather month I want to have access to as much information to be as prepared as possible. After playing with the app for about 10 minutes to get an understanding of how to use it, it is clear that this app is the best travel tool I have ever used. Very easy to learn, easy to navigate and can really save someone from being unprepared driving into dangerous road conditions.

511 is an easy-to-remember traveler information telephone number. 511 will eventually replace and consolidate a variety of travel information telephone numbers around the country. 511 provides real-time updates about weather-related road conditions, road work, commercial vehicle restrictions, road closures and other events that impact traffic via the phone or Internet.

On March 8, 1999, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to designate a nationwide three-digit telephone number for traveler information. This petition was formally supported by 17 state DOTs, 32 transit operators, and 23 metropolitan planning organizations and local agencies. On July 21, 2000, the FCC designated 511 as the single travel information telephone number to be made available to states and local jurisdictions across the country.

The FCC ruling leaves nearly all implementation issues and schedules to state and local agencies and telecommunications carriers. There are no federal requirements; and there is no mandate for 511 implementation. While several states, highway corridors and cities already have 511 service, many states are still planning their 511 deployments. For more information on 511 deployments around the United States visit the 511 Deployment Coalition website http://www.deploy511.org.

511 is offered statewide in Colorado and covers interstates, U.S. routes and state highways. It does not include county roads or city streets. Eventually, this service may be expanded to other roadways.

Information from Colorado’s 511 system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week via wireless, landline or pay phone by dialing 511 within Colorado, or any phone by dialing 800-288-1047 nationwide. Drivers are encouraged to put safety first by asking a passenger to call 511, calling or logging onto COtrip.org prior to departure, or placing the call at an appropriate stopping point along the way.

The phone system identifies your telephone prefix when calling from a landline phone. It identifies the communications tower that your wireless phone is connected to at the time you place the call. In some cases, along state borders, Colorado’s 511 may or may not work properly depending upon the cell tower location for that specific call. The 511 out-of-state phone number is 800-288-1047.

Winter (typically October through April) road conditions are updated hourly or as information becomes available as conditions change. Please note: Road conditions may change rapidly between reporting periods and updates are posted as soon as information becomes available. A roadway with no update available does not mean that no weather conditions exist, but rather adverse driving conditions may be present and there are no new updates available at this time. In addition to winter road conditions, information regarding state road construction projects, maintenance activities, crashes, truck restrictions and detours are posted. Information will be updated as new work is started or completed, or travel conditions change. 511 is an evolving traveler information service. As additional resources become available, the system may be expanded to include information regarding transit routes, tourism and community events, emergency services, bridge embargos, etc.

511 is a public service of the telecommunications industry and the State of Colorado. Calls to 511 are considered local when dialed from a landline phone. Wireless users will pay normal airtime and roaming charges, according to their wireless service contracts. CDOT encourages motorists to pull off the road and park in a safe area before using wireless phones. Pay phone users are responsible for the local call fee.

Contact your phone carrier directly for assistance.

Many businesses have their own telephone systems. These systems switch calls between internal users and external telephone lines. These systems are called private branch exchanges (PBX). Most PBX systems require the user to dial a single-digit access code (typically an “8” or “9”) to reach an outside line. For callers to dial 511 directly, a switch must be made in the company’s phone system. Contact your supervisor or employer to find out if this switch has been made. Until the switch is made, you may call 511 after first dialing the required single digit access code.

Updates are real-time (except winter road conditions, which are updated every two hours) and are updated as conditions change.

A computer-based system known as CARS (Condition Acquisition and Reporting System) is working behind the scene processing the information that is entered by the CDOT. After that information is entered, it is routed to the 511 website and phone system where it is automatically converted from text to audio messages. Currently, winter road condition information is entered into CARS by the Iowa State Patrol, based on observations made by their officers as they travel throughout the state. Obviously, officers are not able to cover all designated routes at the same time. However, they continue to enter information as conditions change and they travel different roadways. CDOT will enter data into CARS about statewide road construction projects, maintenance activities, crashes, truck restrictions and detours.

911 is used to report emergencies, the need for police or medical attention. 511 is a traveler information number.

511 is another information source for travelers that complements radio and television broadcasts. It is coded to the specific routes the caller is interested in; that kind of user-specific information is not given over broadcast media.

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s and Colorado State Patrol’s number one priority is safety. Our programs and efforts are directed toward improving safety and saving lives. The preference is that motorists call 511 from home, work or other point of origin prior to their departure. When used en route, motorists are urged to place their calls from a nearby rest area, fueling station or other appropriate stopping point along the way. It is illegal to park your vehicle on the shoulder of an interstate highway in a nonemergency situation.

CDOT’s new statewide, interactive map helps Colorado drivers find tire shops and discounts in their area ahead of winter driving season

News release.

STATEWIDE   —   Safer vehicles mean safer roads. As Colorado heads into the winter driving season, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is making it easier than ever for drivers to ensure their vehicles are prepared for snowy and icy conditions. CDOT has launched an online, statewide map to help drivers find reliable tire shops and discounts in their area.

“When it comes to winter driving, tires are one of the primary factors in how well you’re able to navigate Colorado’s often treacherous road conditions,” said Andrew Hogle, CDOT public information officer. “By creating this simple tool, we hope to help Coloradans access the resources they need to stay safe on the roads this winter.”

CDOT has teamed up with over 140 tire partners across the state, many of which are providing discounts on tires and winter maintenance services through the agency’s new online database. These discounts and the statewide tire partner map can be found at   codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/tires . CDOT will add more tire partners to the online map to continue growing the database throughout the season. Tire companies and auto shops interested in partnering with CDOT to be included can visit   bit.ly/CDOT-tire-database   to complete the tire partner registration form.

Updates to Colorado’s Traction Law went into effect last year, requiring that all motorists have either an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle, or winter tires, mud/snow tires, or tires with an all-weather rating. The law also increased the minimum tread depth for tires on all vehicles — including those with four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive — to three-sixteenths (3/16) of an inch. For more Traction Law information and downloadable materials, visit   codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/tractionlaw .

Between October and December 2019, CDOT data shows 124 crashes were reported on the I-70 mountain corridor, resulting in more than 114 hours of partial and full-lane closure time. More than 50 non-crash emergency responses were also reported in that time — which includes spin-outs/slide-offs and mechanical issues — resulting in 28 hours of closure time. CDOT reports that traffic accidents, not volume, account for up to 60% of all traffic delays on Colorado roads.

“CDOT and our partners do everything possible to keep the roads clear and safe for those traveling, but it is the responsibility of all drivers to make sure their vehicles are prepared for winter,” said Hogle. “One of the biggest, yet most preventable, things we see that causes major problems on our roads and highways is bad tires.”

In addition to providing resources to ensure vehicle and tire safety and Traction Law compliance, CDOT is also reminding motorists of the following tips for driving in the snow:

  • Slow down — driving too fast for conditions causes most accidents.
  • Take a little extra time to clear your car of snow and ice before leaving for your destination.
  • When driving at night, keep your headlight beams low. High beams can amplify the appearance of snow and lead to decreased visibility.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Obey the Tandem Snowplow Law. Never pass a snowplow on the right, and never attempt to pass a group of snowplows operating in tandem formation. This is now a Class A traffic offense.
  • Avoid traveling to the mountains during peak times.   Goi70.com   offers weekend travel forecasts that are updated every Thursday afternoon to help you plan.
  • If you are stopped on I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel, it may be due to safety metering. Safety metering helps control the flow of traffic, reduce crashes and keeps the tunnel clear for emergency vehicles to get through. Please be patient.
  • An Express Lane is available on eastbound I-70 between Empire and Idaho Springs for a toll.

Visit   codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/winter-preparedness.html   for more winter driving preparedness tips and checklists.

With that in mind, CDOT maintenance and construction crews follow social distancing and other health safety measures to reduce COVID-19 exposure on the worksite. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced  guidelines for construction activities . The public is urged to join the campaign for #DoingMyPartCO by practicing social distancing and wearing face masks. As traffic returns to normal levels, motorists must drive cautiously and heed the speed limit so all of us can return home safely.

WHOLE SYSTEM. WHOLE SAFETY.

In early 2019, CDOT announced its Whole System — Whole Safety initiative to heighten safety awareness. This initiative takes a systematic, statewide approach to safety combining the benefits of CDOT’s programs that address driving behaviors, our built environment and the organization's operations. The goal is to improve the safety of Colorado’s transportation network by reducing the rate and severity of crashes and improving the safety of all transportation modes. The program has one simple mission—to get everyone home safely.

Safety Metering

What is safety metering.

Of the 97-mile stretch on I-70 between Denver and Vail, no segment is more important than the 1.7 miles through the Eisenhower Tunnel—connecting Colorado's eastern and western slopes, and traversing the continental divide.

With more than 30,000 vehicles passing through the tunnel daily, keeping the tunnel clear and operating continuously presents a challenge, especially with the increased volume of weekend I-70 winter traffic.

Among CDOT's arsenal of tools to mitigate I-70 traffic is safety metering. While drivers may be stopped an average of 20 minutes with safety metering, the actual delay is only around 3.5 minutes. This is because eastbound traffic on the other side of the Eisenhower Tunnel is still moving slowly and cars usually quickly catch up with the flow of traffic.

Blue snowflake divider

This occurs on the approach to the Eisenhower Tunnel. An alternating red and green stoplight cycles every four to eight seconds to keep traffic moving consistently through the tunnel, while traffic on the tunnel's east side slowly dissipates.

This occurs at eastbound on-ramps at Copper Mountain, Frisco, Silverthorne, and Loveland. This type of metering may be more familiar, occurring on highway and interstate on-ramps throughout most metro areas.

Safety metering is triggered by high traffic, accidents or adverse weather, but with either type of metering, the goal is the same: prevent traffic back-ups in the Tunnel. The Tunnel needs to remain open for emergency vehicles to get through, which allows them to react to and clear the emergency more quickly.
