If it's good enough for Logan Roy & Co., it's certainly good enough for the rest of us. As fans of Succession already know, the members of TV's most dysfunctional billionaire clan are partial to subtle markers of extreme wealth—and Carl Friedrik is their choice luggage. And for good reason: understated, sleek, and a perfect way to transport all that Loro Piana cashmere.

One reviewer writes: "Makes travelling a breeze. Elegant and simple design, and the front pocket fits my laptop and two passports perfectly. Would absolutely recommend."

Lightweight but built to last, Rimowa's aluminum suitcase is so coveted for good reason. But the 126-year-old German brand's mastery of the hardy metal happened by accident—in the 1930s, a fire destroyed most of the materials in Rimowa's factory. All that remained? Aluminum.

19 Best Luggage Brands of 2024 to Get You From A to B

All products featured on Vogue are independently selected by our editors. However, we may earn affiliate revenue on this article and commission when you buy something.

Moreso than any of the items you’ll pack for your holiday, your suitcase is here to stay. To travel smart is to select a case from one of the best luggage brands—because a well-made, thoughtfully designed case can last you for decades. I’ve seen Rimowa’s passed down several generations, and they seem to get even better with age—dings, stickers, and all.

Investing in quality luggage only makes getting there all the better. A lightweight steel case might mean you can pack a bit extra and avoid an overweight baggage fee. An eye-catching rollaboard from Calpak in a cheerful color will ensure no one else mistakes their luggage for yours. The nostalgic set, meanwhile, will delight in leather-trimmed cases from Steamline, Globe-Trotter, and T Anthony; you may be boarding a plane, but your case will transport you right to the Orient Express. If you’re traveling in some fashion that doesn’t require a TSA Agent to handle your luggage, why not opt for an extra-luxe option? Louis Vuitton and Gucci both make some lovely sets worthy of the private jet on which you may or may not be flying. Shop Vogue ’s edit of the best luggage brands below.

The Best Luggage Brands, According to Vogue :

  • The Sustainable Suitcase : Paravel the Aviator , $395
  • The Customizable Carry-On : Away the Bigger Carry-On , $645
  • The Designer Roller : Gucci Savoy large trolley , $3,980
  • The Luxurious Luggage : Rimowa Essential check-in suitcase , $1150
  • The Affordable and Aesthetic Option : Béis check-in roller , $328

Co-founded by Indré Rockefeller (a Vogue alumni) and Andy Krantz in 2016, Paravel is one of the few luggage brands that is as stylish as it is sustainable. Take, for example, its Aviator case—its shell is made of a recycled polycarbonate material, the lining is woven with fibers sourced from recycled plastic water bottles, the handle is composed of recycled aircraft-grade aluminum, and it all zips together with a recycled zipper. In addition to luggage, look to the brand for Dopp kits, packing cubes , and all variety of travel accessories inspired by Rockefeller and Krantz’s jet-set habits.

And as of late, the company is finding ways to infuse a bit of fashion into its heritage designs; recent collaborations include Off-White, Supreme, Daniel Arsham, and Dior, and most recently, Rimowa released a magnetic “ luggage harness ” that can be strapped over various suitcase sizes to streamline your hand-carry items.

Louis Vuitton

Before Nicolas Ghesquière, and way before Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton was a maker of travel trunks. In 1854, Mr. Louis Vuitton had the novel idea to make travel trunks flat and rectangular (previously, they featured rounded tops) so that they could be easily stacked—the rest is history. Anyone who has caught Vuitton’s roving exhibitions dedicated to travel, Volez, Voyagez, Voguez, knows the extent of the maison’s dedication to the art of travel. Today, the brand continues to craft some of the finest pieces of luggage. Most often, these bags are splashed in Vuitton’s monogrammed or Damier Ebene canvas textiles.

best luggage brands samsonite luggage

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years. In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models (pictured here) include the Solyte DLX softside carry-on , the Freeform hardside carry-on and the Stryde Glyder checked bag , which makes the case wide instead of long so it's less likely to tip over.

Best Value Luggage: American Tourister

best luggage brands american tourister

SHOP AT AMAZON

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are lots of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Ideal especially for vacationers, the models are fun and functional between the designs and versatile offerings.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces.

best luggage brands away luggage carry on

SHOP AT AWAY

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it's actually worth the price. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on. It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more), a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper) and a Carry-On with Pocket (which gives you an outside compartment).

an empty away carry on laid open flat on a white table, good housekeeping's luggage review

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

One of our top-tested Hartmann models is the Vigor, which comes in three sizes. It earned high scores across the board — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — and outperformed even pricier styles, so you know you’re getting a good bang for your buck.

best luggage brands calpak luggage

SHOP AT CALPAK

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on was one of our testers' favorites in a recent review, with users especially loving the easy-to-use telescopic handle. We also found it to be easy to pack and loved its metallic color. Though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Best Under-$100 Luggage: Amazon Basics

best luggage brands amazon basics luggage

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure it’ll hold up, and though it might not be the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We most recently reviewed the hardside spinner carry-on , which our analysts found to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This case comes in three sizes and can also be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

best luggage brands - l.l.bean luggage

SHOP AT L.L.BEAN

If you’re going away for weeks or just have lots to pack, L.L.Bean’s duffels are roomy enough to stuff in everything you need. There are options with or without wheels and lots of sizes to choose from (the extra-large bag is incredibly durable and one of our go-to picks for vacations with kids ).

The flexible shape of the duffel also allows it to store easily under your bed, so it’s perfect for college students or anyone tight on storage space. It’s also made of sturdy, water-resistant nylon fabric that's made to last no matter where your travels take you — in fact, one of our pros says it's lasted for years without signs of wear.

best luggage brands briggs and riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner was named a winner in Good Housekeeping's 2023 Family Travel Awards after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

best luggage brands - eagle creek luggage

Whether you’re backpacking internationally or exploring a national park, Eagle Creek gives you both the convenience and durability you need in a bag. Some have various compartments so you can stay organized (or store shoes and dirty laundry separately), and some bags have backpack straps if you need to be hands-free.

We especially love the Cargo Hauler Duffel for shorter trips: It’s affordable, spacious, lightweight and folds up into a small pouch for easy storage. For longer getaways, the Migrate Wheeled Duffel is larger and has two wheels with a telescopic handle. It also opens wide so you can easily access the contents.

best luggage brands how good housekeeping tests luggage

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers. The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage, in particular, stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it super durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair trade-off for the top-of-the-line features.

best luggage brands - open story luggage

Hardside cases made of 100% polycarbonate can cost several hundred dollars, but this Target-exclusive brand offers top-performing polycarbonate suitcases at a lower cost than its competitors. The carry-on size is just $170 and was lightweight and spacious in our review with lots of compartments to stay organized. This smart luggage even comes with a detachable laundry bag and a USB port in case you want to add a battery to charge on the go. The checked size is $210, and both sizes come in a variety of metallic colors.

Testers also loved using these suitcases, giving them high scores for being easy to maneuver. The one downside they noted was that the telescopic handle didn't feel as comfortable as others, but it still beat dozens of models in our performance tests.

Best Classic Hardside Luggage: Rimowa

best luggage brands rimowa

SHOP AT RIMOWA

Rimowa has always been at the cutting edge of luggage materials and made the first polycarbonate suitcase in 2000. It only makes hardside luggage but has several different collections ranging from the Essential Lite , which is the lightest and least expensive, to the Original , which is made of durable aluminum and has clever packing compartments.

The brand is expensive — the cheapest case is over $600! — but its polycarbonate spinner was among the best in our test based on its weight, packing space, durability and maneuverability. Make sure to check the handles on the case before you buy to ensure it suits your needs. Some of the most lightweight options have a T-shaped handle, which isn't as comfortable to pull for long periods.

best luggage brands monos

SHOP AT MONOS

Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends , and high quality so they can stand the test of time. Most of its hardside bags are entirely polycarbonate, though some combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.

The Check-In Large was a winner of GH's 2023 Family Travel Awards thanks to its super spacious interior and maneuverability. Testers said it was easy to roll and they loved the sleek appearance. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

a group of blue luggage

Best Printed Luggage: Heys

best luggage brands heys america luggage

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art , making your suitcase a fun yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease of use scores.

How we test luggage

knk

Our luggage evaluations are conducted in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Textiles Lab and combine proprietary test methods using specialized equipment with an obstacle course for consumer testers to navigate. Each piece of luggage is reviewed for the following factors:

Ready, Jet-Set, Go: The 15 Best Luxury Luggage Brands

We all have baggage. Make it beautiful.

by Emma Treagus Updated on November 11, 2023

At Luxe Digital, we independently research, review, and recommend products we love and that we think you will love, too. Learn more about how we curate the best products for you .

As seasoned travelers, we don’t take luggage lightly.

We notice how a suitcase handles Italy’s cobblestone streets. We’re cognizant of the ratio of size to weight—and, therefore, how much of our precious weight limits the case exhausts. And we’re familiar with what looks good after thousands of air miles.

After testing dozens of the most popular luggage choices, we’ve found the luggage brands that get the job done most effectively (and fashionably—because style always counts.)

Let’s be honest. We all have baggage. Some are just easier to carry and lighter to check-in.

The 15 best luggage brands

Why you can trust Luxe Digital?

As a digital nomad, I’ve personally traveled more than most over the past two years. And while I’ve experienced some incredible places, the on-the-move lifestyle definitely brings home which products are worth investing in and which aren’t.

For this article, the discerning editorial team at Luxe Digital tested dozens of luggage brands (from check-ins to carry-ons to weekend duffles) in real-life international travels (hint, hint: journey through our sister site Luxa Terra for luxury travel inspiration).

For more on how we test products , see our HAPPY philosophy for buying luxuries.

Check our special luggage buyers’ guide after the list to see exactly what you should pay attention to before purchasing a checked-in suitcase.

Holding the title of the world’s oldest luggage brand, travelers have been trusting the expertise of Samsonite for over one hundred years.

In fact, the company gained inspiration from a brief hiatus in which they were unable, due to the war, to construct their luggage from their traditional materials. New, synthetic materials took precedence, and they’ve never looked back.

Samsonite has weathered the storms of the Great Depression and two World Wars and came out on top. So yes, you can probably trust them to see your possessions safely through an international flight!

Best for: The OG of reliable luggage.

Star product: Omni PC

Founded in 1989, Calpak is one of the most well-known and best travel luggage brands. And while all Calpak luggage is high quality and excellent value, we’re particularly partial to the label’s range of carry-ons.

Calpak carry-ons feature plenty of compartments and pockets to separate your shoes from your chiffons. They are super lightweight and designed to fit into overhead compartments. But if you get carried away with designer boutiques over your travels, the expandable sides always make room for more.

Best for: Compact and convenient.

Star product: Carry-On Luggage

Calpak’s designs are meticulously thought out, featuring considerate details such as shoe compartments, expandable zips and carefully placed pockets. It’s also surprisingly well-priced for a premium quality label.

Briggs & Riley: Most durable luggage brand

best luggage brands briggs riley - Luxe Digital

Made from superior materials, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating. Yep, feel free to shove yours off the roof or whack it with a baseball bat. And if you go too far—which we’re yet to experience—the confident brand will repair it free of charge, no questions asked.

Briggs & Riley makes the most durable luggage. But it’s also super high-tech. The luxury suitcases feature the world’s only one-touch CX expansion. And with the click of a button, the bags expand for increased packing capacity and compress for compact convenience. Imagine actually closing your case without sitting on it first…

Best for: Varying off the beaten track without bearing the bruises to prove it.

Star product: Baseline Medium Expandable

You may pay a little more for the premium luggage line, but if you’re willing to invest in a lifetime of comfortable travel, we think it’s totally worth it. Briggs & Riley luggage comes with a Lifetime warranty, so you’ll never have to hunt for a suitcase again.

Louis Vuitton: Most expensive luggage brand

best luggage brands louis vuitton - Luxe Digital

We all know Louis Vuitton as one of the most popular luxury brands . Although we seldom refer to the affluent label as one of the best luggage brands. But as the OG in luxury luggage, we’d be remiss to leave Louis Vuitton bags off our list. And when this Pegase suitcase arrives on your doorstep, you’ll be grateful we didn’t.

Created in 2004, the Pegase infuses the quality and timelessness of the all-hailed luxury label with the latest in luggage innovation. And as one of our best Louis Vuitton bags of all time, we see this sleek, monogrammed canvas suitcase as your lifelong travel companion. That’s worth a slight splurge, right?

Best for: Vintage va va voom.

Star product: Louis Vuitton Pegase

We don’t have to tell you: Louis Vuitton is the pioneer of luxury luggage. Whether it’s a timeless travel tote or retro roll-on, it’s the kind of designer bags you pass down to future generations.

best luggage brands samsara - Luxe Digital

As one of the more affordable luxury brands, we were unbelievably impressed by Samsara’s performance.

Made from polycarbonate, with quality 360 degree wheels and smooth telescopic handles Samsara’s suitcases are super light and durable. We took ours for a bumpy ride over Europe’s cobblestone streets, and it stood up to the test.

We were also intrigued by Samsara’s smart features. The brand’s smart designs feature Tag Smart technology so that you can track your suitcase in the air.

Samsara also has a quality line of smaller essentials, including garment bags , packing cubes , dopp kits and crossbodies—all of which are reasonably priced and designed to make the journey much more enjoyable.

Best for: Staying on track—even when your bag isn’t.

Star product: Tag Smart Aluminium

The brand’s Tag Smart technology is genius. Especially if you’re one to stress about whether your bags will make it after the layover. However, Samsara also has more affordable, basic designs for those who prefer to keep travel simple.

best luggage brands nomatic - Luxe Digital

We’ve used and loved our Nomatic travel backpack for quite some time and were excited to see whether the rest of the brand’s luggage line lived up to the soaring standard it had set.

It did.

Although Nomatic doesn’t have a huge variety when it comes to different models and styles, what they do have is meticulously designed and beautifully crafted. Details such as low-profile handles, silent Hinomoto wheels, magnetic compression straps and strategically placed laptop sleeves make Nomatic luggage a dream to pack and a pleasure to travel with.

Nomatic luggage is also lightweight and durable and it’s really not too expensive for designs that last as long as they do. While you’re there, the duffles, toiletry bags , backpacks and garment bags are worth checking out.

Best for: Facilitating a digital nomad lifestyle.

Star product: Carry-on Classic

As frequent travelers, we were amazed at how Nomatic luggage performed in all situations—from business trips to adventure holidays. We also love that you can create your own travel collection with nifty add-ons and quintessential accessories.

Eagle Creek

best luggage brands eagle creek - Luxe Digital

Founded in 1975, Eagle Creek has been around long enough to really perfect its designs and luggage collection. And while it may not be the most stylish or decadent label, it’s one of the top luggage brands when it comes to performance.

Made from weatherproof, abrasion-resistant materials, Eagle Creek’s luggage is engineered to go anywhere and everywhere, protecting your valuables on the move and never showing signs of wear or tear.

Its oversized wheels are also more robust than most, as well as its zippers and grab handles. Equipment keepers protect your gear in volatile climates. And lockable zips secure your valuables from prying eyes.

Best for: Providing fortnight security on all fronts.

Star product: Eagle Creek ORV 2

If you prefer to stick to city breaks and luxury resorts, you may prefer a brand that is more fashionable and less functional. However, if your upcoming adventures consist of rugged outdoor excursions and rocky terrains, Eagle Creek’s luggage is ultra-robust and protective.

best luggage brands paravel - Luxe Digital

As intended, Paravel is our inspiration to explore the earth while respecting it with eco-friendly materials , such as recycled polycarbonate, recycled nylon, and vegan leather.

The first thing we noticed about Paravel luggage—and it’s almost impossible not to—is how gorgeous its designs are. Elegant and timeless, the retro-inspired styles come in classical hues such as tan, white, black and olive. And while the brand’s sophisticated aesthetic won over our fashion-forward hearts, we were determined to remain unbiased when reviewing performance.

Thankfully, Paravel is equally impressive when it comes to functionality. Clamshell openings and compression straps make room for more. The 360-degree wheels are incredibly smooth and easy to navigate. And all of the materials are of the highest quality.

Best for: Exploring the earth with a fashionable, featherlight footprint.

Star product: Aviator Carry-On Plus

We know we said that luxury luggage is more about quality than style, but this brand’s retro-inspired aesthetic is almost impossible to resist. And you don’t have to—Paravel luggage is as functional as it is fashionable.

Travel luggage buying guide

Sometimes, gazing nonplussed at complicated-sounding specifications of travel luggage can be downright confusing, not to mention frustrating.

We’ll break down some of the most important aspects of luggage to ensure you make the right choice (even if you don’t have a chemistry degree).

Really, when it comes to deciding on materials, it all comes down to Polycarbonate, Aluminium or ABS.

best luggage brands luxury travel - Luxe Digital

Polycarbonate: Polycarbonate is undoubtedly the most popular choice for hard shell luggage. It’s lighter than aluminum, yet still extremely durable.

It’s known for its resilience, as it possesses the cool ability (something of a superpower in the luggage world) of changing shape upon impact, and reverting to its original form instantly afterwards. This makes it an excellent choice to mitigate the perils of rough handling.

ABS: ABS is a type of thermoplastic. It’s lighter than both polycarbonate and aluminum, but generally speaking, not as durable as either. It’s definitely not a bad choice for carry-ons, as the risk of impact is much lower if you can keep a watchful eye for your journey.

Often, it will be combined with polycarbonate and/or aluminum, which definitely elevates its strength and durability.

Aluminum: The most long-standing, and the most expensive, of luggage materials is certainly aluminum. A traditional choice, but less preferred now due to the increased availability of cheaper materials like polycarbonate.

If you’re looking for a classic aesthetic and a solid, expensive feel, it could be worth investing in aluminum luggage!

Must-have features

360° wheels: This probably goes without saying, but in order to fluidly transport your suitcase, you’re going to need wheels. Every suitcase worth its salt will offer four 360 ° wheels to optimize the smoothness of pulling it along.

Telescoping handles: Telescoping handles are a fancy term for handles that pull out of the top of your luggage, and lock in place. They tend to come with a single control button, which ensures you can maneuver your case with only one hand.

best luggage brands luxury suitcase - Luxe Digital

Expandability: Typically found more on soft side luggage (but increasingly on hard side), expandability allows you to stretch the capacity that little bit further. And as every traveler will know, just a few centimeters of height can be absolutely crucial.

Inner compartments: If you don’t love opening your luggage after a long journey to the horrific vision of a clothing war zone, we suggest you ensure your new luggage has inner compartments. For the sake of organization, it’s totally worth it.

Often, there’ll be a discreet laundry pocket, too.

TSA-locking: You’ll see this add-on peppering most luggage descriptions. Simply put, it’s a specific locking system that can be opened by both its owner and the TSA agents at US airports.

Of course, airport security is permitted to check the contents of every piece of luggage. TSA-locking is a stress-free, simple way of them doing so.

Softside vs hardside luggage

Some of the best luggage brands advocate for soft side luggage, others only manufacture hardside luggage and some have both. So how do you know which is right for you?

High-quality softside suitcases are usually made from ballistic nylon. They are malleable and easy to squeeze into tight crevices—such as the corner of an overpacked car. And the relapsable silhouette takes up very little space when it isn’t being used, making it simple to stow away.

Hardside luggage, on the other hand, is usually made from polycarbonate PVC. The hard shell is great for protecting delicate items during travel. However, it is less flexible than soft side luggage. If you can’t decide whether to prioritize malleability or preservation, there are also hybrid suitcases that give you the best of both worlds.

Frequently asked questions about checked-in luggage

Luggage brands such as Horizn Studios , Away , and RIMOWA offer long-lasting, durable and stylish suitcases in a variety of sizes and materials, which should last you journey after journey. Check our list of the best luggage brands for our detailed recommendations.

Brands like Samsonite , RIMOWA and Briggs & Riley are world-renowned for manufacturing extremely durable luggage. Check our list of the best luggage brands for more options.

Depending on how long you’re going for, it’s usually best to opt for a large suitcase or luggage. Most larger sizes offer around a 100-liter capacity, which means you’ll have plenty of space for clothes, tech, and essentials.

Hard side luggage is better if you’re going to travel regularly with breakable items. Soft sides, although often very good quality, are more prone to ripping and impact damage simply due to the nature of the materials.

Better still, it has a front top-zip compartment that houses a USB cable. Add on a power bank and you can charge your devices while they’re in storage.

Besides that killer feature, the Tumi Voyageur Leger Carry-On also has front-lid or split-case zip entry, plenty of pockets, along with a three-stage telescoping handle and four recessed wheels. It also has a leather-wrapped top and side handles while there’s a bottom grab handle for those moments when that method is easier.

Carl Friedrik The Carry-On

Best for lightweight durability.

The Carl Friedrik The Carry-On might not be the biggest of carry-ons but it’s certainly durable with a lightweight polycarbonate design paired up with an aluminum lock frame. Leather detailing means it looks good while polyester on the inside keeps your belongings safe.

Each side is an open compartment with compression straps to keep items secure. It includes one removable compression pad with a pocket while a modular design means you can add packing cubes for better organization. It also has silent Japanese spinner wheels for great manoeuvrability.

Antler Stamford 2.0 Large

Best for plenty of space.

Looking super sleek, the Antler Stamford 2.0 Large is a hefty way of storing everything imaginable on your travels. It’s still relatively lightweight thanks to its polycarbonate shell but be aware of its heft if you need to be extra light on your feet. It has a removable packing divider with a pocket that sits under compression packaging straps to cut down on creasing and allowing you to keep clothes flat. There’s also an expander zip on the case which adds 5cm of space. On the inside, you can enjoy a D-zip mesh lid pocket and three internal zipped compartments along with an extra pocket for valuables.

Understandably, a TSA-approved combination lock keeps everything safe. The Antler Stamford 2.0 Large also has double whisper quiet Japanese wheels with full 360 degree rotation so it’s easy to move around at the airport.

Bric Positano 21-inch Spinner

Best for the environmentally friendly option.

The Bric Positano 21-inch Spinner looks pretty stylish while being made from recycled polycarbonate which will make you feel better about your contribution to the environment. It offers a USB connection for those times you need to charge items via a power bank on the move, while alongside its ultra-secure zip is a TSA-approved combination lock.

The case has an ultralight D section multi-step aluminum pull-handle system while the inside has two zippered pockets. They could be easier to arrange but the basics are here while a reinforced rib on the shell bottom keeps things stable.

Louis Vuitton Horizon 55

Best for the hugely spacious option.

For when you need to take everything with you, there’s the Louis Vuitton Horizon 55. It’s a far more spacious carry-on than you’d expect with a pull zipper closure padlock system keeping everything safe.

It’s also highly stylish thanks to its cowhide leather exterior and trim, with a polyamide lining protecting the interior. Elastic straps and a divider with pocket helps divide up your items while there’s a large external cane for gripping onto it as you move it across the airport. It’s subtle yet undeniably Louis Vuitton so it looks great on the move.

Tour Paravel Aviator 100

Best for classy recycled quality.

So very stylish, the Tour Paravel Aviator 100 is made from an impressive amount of recycled material. It’s crafted entirely from six recycled water cooler jugs so it’s great for the environment. Because it retains the natural color of the jugs, each carry-on looks slightly different meaning you have an unique model.

It has steel axles and 360-degree wheels so it’s great for moving around with, all while looking good. On the inside is a compression board that helps flatten items to save you space, while all its zippers are made from recycled materials too. It could possibly have more dividers and organizers but otherwise, this is a stylish yet practical carry-on.

Globe Trotter Centenary 18-inch cabin suitcase

Best for a timeless look.

Looking like luggage from centuries gone by, the Globe Trotter Centenary 18-inch cabin suitcase is great for a classic look. Globe Trotter has been around for a long time so it knows how to create such classic looks while making them effective for modern times.

While it might lack some extensive organizers or dividers, the Globe Trotter Centenary 18-inch cabin suitcase is still great. It has a retractable handle with its leather trim looking good wherever you take it. A two-wheeled base is pretty sturdy so you can’t really ask for more from such style.

How we chose these luxury luggage items

Knowing what luggage to buy is a very personal process. However, there are some general things to consider before buying one. We’ve considered such things when making our choices, as well as highlighted what we’ve thought about so you know how we came to our decision.

Size is everything

If you’re regularly taking weekend trips or short business excursions, you don’t need a huge piece of luggage. Alternatively, if you’re going on long adventures, a carry-on isn’t going to cut it a lot of the time. Think long and hard about what kind of trips you take and how your luggage can make such journeys easier for you. Don’t go for the wrong size for your needs.

Think about style

The thing about luxury luggage is you’re not just thinking about how practical it is — you want it to look good too. Consider your aesthetic and how the luggage will match that. Don’t go for a colorway or design that will stand out in the wrong way next to how you look. You’ll only regret it.

What are you packing?

Not everyone needs extensive dividers and organizers in their luggage although it’s certainly helpful. Think about what you’re going to store. Certain clothing will need more careful support than others. This is also your chance to consider if you need a USB port to charge devices on the move. Not everyone does and you’ll always need to add a power bank if that’s you.

These vacation-worthy bags are durable, beautiful and easy to carry.

Luggage can be quite an investment—especially when you’re eyeing luxury or designer luggage brands that are meant to stand the test of time. Though it’s probably not the most exciting purchase you’ll ever make, high-quality baggage will last for years and pay dividends over time (take this from someone who recently had her less-than-stellar rolling bag break open during an international trip and had to duct tape it back together to keep her clothes from falling out).

This large spinner bag features a sleek design (we love the pastel cypress green and lilac colorways), ample interior space and smooth-rolling wheels for seamless travel. The exterior is made from durable Polypropylene, while the interior is created from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. We especially love the integrated AirTag and keyless TSA-approved lock.

If you have to buy one carry-on bag, let this be it. Away's Aluminum Carry-On is larger than most carry bags, but still perfectly sized to fit in the airplane's overhead compartment. The durable aluminum shell comes in three striking colors: black, silver and rose gold. We especially love this suitcase's 360° spinner wheels and the interior compression system, which is perfect for chronic over-packers.

For long weekends and road trips, you absolutely need a weekender set in your luggage collection. This one comes with a spill-proof, customizable canvas bag that slips over the handles of the carbon-neutral Aviator Carry-On (which comes in five handsome colors).

This generously sized check-in bag will fit everything you need for your vacation. Made of an unbreakable polycarbonate shell, this is one durable bag that will last for years. It also features a TSA-approved lock, vegan leather details and whisper-quiet wheels. Bonus: It comes in a dozen beautiful colorways, and other Monos suitcases can be nestled inside this one for easy storage.

This luggage set is perfect for taking on international trips or giving as a gift for the recent grad. It comes with a carry-on suitcase, large checked bag, and extra-large checked bag—all of which are made from hardshell German polycarbonate, silent wheels and multi-stop handles. We love the 15 beautiful colorways (pro tip: the brighter colors make it easier to spot your luggage at baggage claim). The best part? This luggage set is so sturdy, it's backed by a lifetime warranty.

If you're looking for a chic carry-on bag that will fit everything from your laptop and headphones to snacks and valuables, this is it. Though the backpack has a minimalist design, it boasts thoughtful features and elevated details like a soft-lined pocket, hidden zippered pocket with flaps, an interior AirTag holder, and even a laptop hammock. Bonus: It slips right over your luggage handle for hands-free transport.

This pretty piece of striped hand luggage is made of pure cotton and features smooth leather detailing. It comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, two exterior pockets, and a zip top—and practically begs to be taken on a long weekend trip to the lake or beach.

This checked bag from Rimowa effortlessly combines expert craftsmanship and superior engineering. This beautiful piece of luggage will stand the test of time, thanks to a hard shell made of anodized aluminum alloy, high-gloss aluminum corners and handmade leather handles. Bonus: It boasts enough room for journeys up to 10 days.

If you *must* take your laptop with you while you travel, at least do so in style with this classic tote from TUMI. Several interior pockets, a padded laptop compartment, and a magnetic top closure ensure that your tech and valuables stay safely put while in transit. We love that it also comes with TUMI Tracer, a program that can help reunite you with your lost or stolen bag.

Louis Vuitton Horizon 55

For decades, Louis Vuitton has been the choice designer luggage brand for many celebrities, from Jackie Kennedy to Rihanna . And even before that, the brand was an innovator in the luggage industry, making trunks stackable with the creation of the flat top back in the 1850s. While you can’t go wrong with any of Louis Vuitton’s classic pieces of luggage, the Horizon 55 is our favorite, as it pays homage to the original brown monogram branding, but adds functional details like four spinner wheels, a gold handle, a TSA-approved lock, and interior zip pockets and straps.

Steamline Luggage The Starlet Carry-On

This chic black, cream, and gold suitcase gives us serious vintage vibes, but with the amenities of a modern piece of luggage, including a TSA-approved lock, silent-glide wheels, and a hanging travel organizer. Inside, the bag features a polka dot interior lining, while an included ripstop nylon cover will keep the outside safe from scratches in transit—though, honestly, this is the type of bag you’ll want on display. The collection has been known to sell out, so act quickly to get your hands on one.

Off-White Arrow Motif Trolley

Emblazoned with two criss-crossed arrows and the phrase “For Travel” across the side, this all-black spinner suitcase is a must-have travel accessory for street-style devotees. Designed by Virgil Abloh , creative consultant for Kanye West and Louis Vuitton, the simple but unique design—from afar, it looks like a plain black suitcase; up close, you can see Virgil's details, like the gunmetal-tone hardware and raised logo—makes it the perfect staple for those who don’t like flashy and colorful luggage, but still want to make a statement with their carry-on. Inside, you'll find elastic compression straps, an important design element for overpackers.

Roam The Globetrotter Large Check-In

Completely customizable from its outer shell to the zipper color, Roam’s largest check-in size bag, The Globetrotter, provides a designer look at a more affordable price (the co-founders came from Tumi, where large bags hover closer to $1,000 apiece). Its large size makes it perfect for long, cross-country vacations; the lightweight (10.3 pounds), water-repellent spinner suitcase has plenty of interior space and zip pockets to store smaller items, or anything you want kept separate from the main compartment.

Tumi Extended Trip Packing Case

This hard shell aluminum spinner is roomy—11 inches deep and 20 inches wide—making it the perfect packing solution for lengthy trips or times when you want to pack in the same bag as your travel partner (and avoid two checked bag fees). It rolls straight and smooth, even when full, and comes in four neutral colors—blush, silver, matte black, and texture silver—all of which are designed to look like waves. It also has a free monogram option, as well as three interior zip pockets to help keep your clothing organized.

MCM Visetos Weekender Bag

This durable leather weekender is printed in MCM’s classic logo design, and its dimensions mean it fits effortlessly into an airplane’s overhead storage (or into the back of your rental car). The duffel features two interior compartments for storage (one zippered, one slip) as well as an exterior trolley sleeve. Your hands will appreciate the soft leather grab handles and adjustable shoulder strap.

Disney x Gucci Donald Duck large suitcase

Leave it to Gucci to create the chicest Disney suitcase we've seen yet. The suitcase starts with Gucci's signature look—a beige and ebony GG canvas, brown leather trim—then adds on whimsical swirls of teal, drawings of Donald Duck and his nephews (Huey, Dewey and Louie, as Disney fans may recall), starbursts, and rocket ships. It's practical, too, with protective metal feet on the bottom, a clasp closure, and interior elastic straps for securing all your belongings.

Globe-Trotter Paul Smith Carry-On

Queen Elizabeth II brought a Globe-Trotter suitcase on her 1947 countryside honeymoon to the Broadlands, and in 2000 she knighted designer Paul Smith for his contributions in fashion. So it was only right for the two royal-approved designers to create a suitcase collaboration of classic black trolley bags—this time with more modern pops of color on each corner. Of the three bags, the mid-size 20" case is the most useful: The luggage doesn’t have wheels, so it’s not ideal if you’re packing heavy items, but it's perfect for a weekend or road trip and will fit in most aircraft cabin overhead compartments. (For longer trips, check out the extra-deep size .)

Prada Saffiano Leather Trolley

This high-tech designer suitcase is built with Bluetooth technology that allows you to track your bag within a 141-foot range, so you won’t ever have to wonder if your luggage made its way onto the plane. Designed by a fashion powerhouse, the bag is made with Saffiano leather—a stain-resistant and water-repellent leather patented by Prada—and features Prada-logo lining on the interior.

Bric's MyLife Expandable Spinner

This soft-sided checked suitcase is weather-proof and easy to clean, meaning you won’t have to worry about the soft dusty color getting scuffed up. Bric’s has specialized in Italian leather goods since 1952, and the handle, zipper, and logo are covered in quality Italian leather—touches you'll appreciate when pulling it off the luggage carousel. Inside, the case has a large mesh pocket and garment straps for organization, while the outside features a large exterior pocket for last-minute items.

The 14 best luggage brands, explained by GQ's globetrotting travel editors

By Owen Gough and Heidi Quill

14 Best luggage brands 2024 explained by GQ's travel editors

From nervous, infrequent flyers to veteran business people hardened by dozens of hops on the red-eye, there’s one constant that remains the same with holidaymakers and travellers: the need to invest in a quality suitcase . The sight of passengers hoisting barely held-together tote bags over their shoulders for a long-haul journey gives us the sweats, so we’ve made it our duty to ensure that anyone taking a trip in the next few months is equipped with the best luggage brands that guarantee a smooth experience – at least when it comes to packing and lugging the thing around the airport.

And look, it’s not like you’re unaware of what's available right now. Trip-friendly bags from the likes of Antler , Carl Friedrik , Globe Trotter and Samsonite are as ubiquitous in any airport as an ill-advised early-morning pint before boarding, but sometimes you just need a nudge in the right direction to find the truly elite options. Our editors have put in the groundwork so you don’t have to, arriving at the absolute best luggage brands that will deck out your travels with the best suitcases, carry-on , luggage tags , passport holders and accessories. Whether you're travelling to New York or New Delhi, read on to check out our top picks.

Skip to: Which suitcase is better, hard or soft? | How do I choose a suitcase? | What size should by carry-on luggage be? | How much should I spend on my luggage?

Which suitcase is better, hard or soft?

The choice between hard-side luggage or soft-sided suitcases will largely hinge on whether you’re checking it in on the plane or carrying it on with you. Hard-sided suitcases offer greater durability to cope with dings, scrapes and knocks that will inevitably happen in transit, keeping your neatly-packed clothes secure and protected throughout the journey. The problem is these checked bags are typically heavier which can cause a few headaches when you go to check it in or place it in the overhead bin, so keep that in mind.

Soft cases are easier to lug around and are lighter, but miss out on the protective functionality of hard-shell options. In this regard, they're a greater prospect for hold-all luggage or if you’re hopping on trains and buses, as you can squash them down if space is tight over long trips. The carry-on variety of luggage is easier and often cheaper, but worth only worth considering for shorter journeys. it's also worth considering these will certainly not be water-resistant, so keep that in your thoughts when planning a trip to rainier climes - or literally anywhere in the north-west of Europe.

Regardless of the solidity of your case, we’ll always recommend grabbing a wheeled suitcase, because no one wants to arrive at the gate for their summer holidays drenched in sweat and nursing a dead arm. Wheeled luggage has got significantly better in recent years, with telescopic handles and whisper-quiet, 360-degree spinner wheels for supreme manoeuvrability from check-in to your plane seat.

There are standout backpacks or shoulder bags that bring the sartorial chops you're likely hunting for while also offering additional storage space for your travels. These are typically best used on short trips or as carry-on luggage to save your muscles during a long journey, but most can be bought and used in tandem with your chosen suitcase to house an in-flight book, snacks, a work laptop and one of our favourite travel pillows to save yourself a crook neck upon arrival.

How do I choose a suitcase?

Selecting which checked luggage to go for can be as tricky as deciding where you're planning to holiday in the first place, so it's worth brushing up on the best options to help inform your choice. There's a fair amount of complication that makes this difficult, with different airlines imposing a variety of weight and size limitations, as well as the obvious sartorial and space aspects that make up a solid set of luggage.

Therefore, we'll give you the boring answer and say that it largely depends on what kind of travel you're doing in the immediate future. Larger trunks and suitcases will inevitably be your best bet for getting around the world on longer, more luxurious trips, with enough space to hold all the clothes and items you might need for a week or longer.

Short city trips or weekend getaways will be the domain of smaller carry-on luggage , with wheels and handles to help you glide around train stations and airports stress-free. These might not have the capacious skills to keep you dressed for longer periods of time, but they often have enough to stretch to a week maximum should you need it.

Travel backpacks , soft-sided luggage and rucksacks are a solid option for very short weekend trips or overnight stays, as they aren't particularly roomy for all your gear but are easier to carry over shorter distances. They can also be a good accoutrement to carry-on luggage, as you can split your load between the two bags and get more in your trip.

To make your packing stresses a little less intense, we also recommend picking up some packing cubes to use as a divider for your clothes. These little bags are a life saver for organising your suitcase into easily manageable chunks, using a compression system to squash all your items down for more space inside your suitcase. For example, pack all T-shirts in one bag, underwear in another, and maybe a smaller one for toiletries, and then once you're at the end of your trip, keep the used clothes separate from the clean clothes so you know what to chuck into the washing machine when you get back.

What size should by carry-on luggage be?

Frustratingly, not all airlines can agree on a set size and weight for your carry-on luggage, which can provoke headaches if you're prone to travelling with multiple companies or taking on a few flights in one trip with several layovers. However, there are some hard and fast truths to your carry-on limits. As a general rule of thumb, suitcases should not be taller than 24 inches, wider than 16 inches or deeper than 10 inches. This is your standard ballpark figure, and you won't find a single airline that allows beyond this limit.

It's worth noting this if your carry-on luggage is expandable – which many are – allowing you to extend your internal space to fit in those last-minute flip-flop additions. Using this feature may push your carry-on luggage over the edge, which will incur fees for additional space, you've been warned. As always, you should do your due diligence and check with the airline before you fly and then measure your own luggage to ensure it's within size and weight limits for the smoothest possible journey through check-in.

How much should I spend on my luggage?

Holidays don't come cheap, so you're probably not wanting to spend a small fortune on luggage, too. However, there are some common truths about picking up your travel gear and how much you should spend; namely, “don't scrimp and save if you don't want future headaches with faulty gear”. Going cheap will inevitably mean materials won't be up to scratch, and you may risk getting it through your journey in one piece, which tends to lead you to buying replacement bags anyway – so why not think of it as an investment piece?

£80 is usually the entry point to decent luggage, and it's worth being mindful about that cost usually being per bag or suitcase. Great options from Amazon Basics or Samsonite can land you in this price point and afford you a decent build quality to get you through a few years of travel.

Stepping up between £200 and £500 is the next price point, where you'll find proven quality and luxurious materials. Brands like Antler, DB and Carl Friedrik are lurking around this cost, and such suitcases should easily see you through several years of jet-setting if you're kind to them.

Anything beyond £800 is a real statement piece in the airport lounge; think Gucci, Louis Vuitton and the like. If you genuinely care about your aesthetics, over caring about wether your handsome gear picks up a few knocks and scratches in transit, then these brands will do you proud.

Antler Bamburgh duffel bag

British-made Antler holds a loving place in our hearts simply because its collection is capacious, hardy and worthy of a spot on our Instagram grid as we jet away for the summer. The Clifton set is one of the best-selling luggage options for a good reason: they are luxurious, durable and spacious enough for two weeks of travelling, all for a mid-tier price. If you can, we’d highly recommend picking up the packing cubes. We swear by these useful mini bags to keep underwear, T-shirts and socks stored neatly and crease-free on long-haulers or they can be used as a handy laundry bag to be kept separate from your clean clothes.

For shorter trips, we’ll point you in the direction of the Bamburgh duffel, a rugged, multipurpose shoulder bag that sports a shower-proof design, padlock-compatible zips and plenty of internal pockets to store passports, wallets and other essentials for easy access.

Sometimes premium products don't need to come at premium price tags, which is just fine by us – more cocktails at the pool bar, please. Monos scratches that exact itch with high-end luggage for jet-setting luxury without breaking the bank. And don't they just look gorgeous.

For short-haul trips, we'd recommend the Carry-On Pro Plus, a suitcase wrought from a polycarbonate shell that's nigh-on indestructible, with TSA-approved locks to keep your clothes safe and secure in transit , as well as a front pocket large enough to fit a laptop. The same thoughtful design carries on through the range with the Metro Duffel, housing enough space for weekend getaways to the coast in style.

Samsonite Lite-Shock - Spinner XL 81cm suitcase

Easily one of the most well-established luggage brands in the world, Samsonite is well-known for producing high-quality luggage options for frequent travellers. Offering TSA-approved locks and expandable storage at an affordable price point, it has become synonymous with aspirational jet-setting since the early 20th century.

Samsonite has a huge catalogue of top-spec luggage for you to peruse, but one of our favourites is the Lite-Shock Spinner. The polycarbonate chassis is expandable but tough against scuffs and marks, making it a veteran of the airport carousel. The lightweight design makes it a great choice for frequent flyers who regularly make short one-week getaways or business trips.

You know Herschel Supply for its bags already, just perhaps not its luggage. You’ve no doubt seen its logo on duffle bags and backpacks a million times over, but it’s exceptional suitcases that this Canadian brand should also be known for. Exceedingly tough, scratch resistant (even on non-black shades) and light, its hardshell models are handsome holiday buddies that come in at a more affordable price than many competitors, but with just the same reliability.

Carefully sectioned split zipped interiors, in-built locks and silent 360 degree wheels, we reckon Herschel’s suitcases have everything you’re looking for — and they have a lifetime warranty to boot.

DB Ramverk tech organiser bag

There really isn’t much the Scandis can’t succeed in when they put their mind to it. DB is a hypey new brand hailing from the snowy climbs of Norway, innovating to make travelling heavy a lot more manageable. The noteworthy aspect here is that DB's collection is sustainably sourced and made to last, with durable designs that proffer a rugged chic coveted by backpackers and gap-year travellers.

We love that the Hugger bundle utilises a hook system where the larger pack piggybacks the smaller pack for an ergonomic lift that will make the long walk through the airport as slippery as a freshly-brushed piste in winter. Elsewhere, the Hugger Backpack on its own is a mighty travelling bag, with a huge cavern for your gear that’s well-protected thanks to the hybrid soft/hard-shell chassis and ribcage system that manages to look striking and deliver the sturdy goods where you need them. Packing space comes at a premium, so we'd also recommend grabbing the tech organiser bag to store cameras, phone chargers or other paraphernalia for a smooth trip.

Louis Vuitton Monogram rolling trunk

Is there any more clear-cut statement of luxury than Louis Vuitton travel gear? We think not. Providing that first-class feel regardless of whether you're in economy or business, Louis Vuitton's selection of logomaniac luggage never fails to look every bit the main character as you ought to feel pre- and post-vacation.

Choosing a particular LV bag is like deciding between a Ferrari and a Lamborghini – without dissimilar price tags –, but we came down on the side of the ultra-luxe Horizon 55 suitcase. Dappled in your choice of either the iconic ‘Damier checkerboard design or the Vuitton Monogram, this particular number is the only true sartorial choice you need to make to turn heads at the departure gate. Perfect to take in the cabin, the 37-litre capacity is more than enough to house your must-have travel essentials, and it also comes with a removable leather name tag for the ultimate travel flex.

If ever there was a master of the anachronistic, it would be Alessandro Michelle's era for Gucci, a theme that is deeply felt within the brand's luggage offerings. Where heritage prints and old-school silhouettes combine with innovative materials and modern durability, Gucci luggage simply cannot go wrong.

For the frequent flyer, we'd suggest the extra-hardy Porter cabin trolley suitcase, where its dense aluminium construction is accented with delicate panels of the ever-infamous ‘Double G’ logo print. For a more retro, aesthetic-focused take, however, the Savoy Ophidia-inspired trolley bag and Interlocking G patterned travel bag make stylish travel partners indeed.

Rimowa Essential Sleeve Cabin Plus

One of the most imperious luggage makers in the game, Rimowa has been cruising to sunnier climes since 1898, and really hit its stride a century ago by creating the world's first aluminium suitcase way back in 1930. Although it's also moved into polycarbonate wares of late, the Cologne-based brand has seen its status elevated via several hypey collaborations with the likes of Supreme, Off-White and Anti Social Social Club. In other words, it's followed exactly the new luxury same playbook as its LMVH stablemates in Fendi, Givenchy and, of course, Louis Vuitton.

There's no better place to start with Rimowa than its Original Check-In suitcase, if only because it's one of the most desirable pieces of luggage in existence. For those in need of something a little more understated, its Essential Cabin and Essential Sleeve Cabin Plus (with an external laptop sleeve, naturally) are both as sturdy as they are suave.

In what might be the most bizarre origin story for a company name, Tumi's moniker comes from a type of Peruvian ceremonial knife used in the sacrifices of ancient South American rituals. Every day's a school day, right? In modern times, it's become a world-class luxe luggage brand beloved by pan-European flight hoppers and high-end holidaymakers alike.

Tumi's 19 Degree Aluminum carry-on suitcase is the style-centric luggage pick that ensures turned heads at baggage claim. Famous hands that have grasped the handle include Renee Rapp and Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min. The immediate appeal is obvious: a vibrant, silver-hued, smart case that's set apart from its competition by its sturdy, streamlined silhouette and rippled outer shell.

So-called because, well, its suitcases look like they've had a crash, a bang, and a wallop, Crash Baggage is founded on the belief that your luggage should be as durable as possible. Subverting shoppers' expectations of what brand-new luggage should look like, Crash's line-up comes pre-worn and dented in a tongue-in-cheek expression of just how resilient its cases are.

For your consideration, dear reader, we've picked out the Stripe 79cm, the Share 55cm and the Icon 79cm. Each decked out in dents and scratches, these cases are bold enough in both colourway and battle scars to be spotted whirling around baggage claim in no time. Plus, with all those aesthetic injuries, you're surely not to be messed with in the oft-competitive dash through arrivals.

Whether your suitcase is being tossed around on a conveyor belt, wheeled through the cobblestone streets of Italy, or packed into a car for a road trip, the luggage brands ahead will support the adventure and the souvenirs. The best luggage—including the best designer luggage —is lightweight, leaves plenty of room for packing (bonus points for organizational pockets), is easily maneuvered, and looks stylish. From carry-on bags to under-seat duffles, versatile travel backpacks , tech packs, extra-large checked options, travel garment bags, and more, we present you with the 14 best luggage brands of 2023 in every category and at every price point. We narrow it down to specific products and collections, but the brands ahead are, without a doubt, the ones to know about. Consider this your sign to start planning that trip you’ve been dreaming of.

The Catalina Supreme Tote does so much more than you could ever imagine. Even if you’re not a “tote girlie” you’ll want to pay attention to everything this magic bag can do. It has a bottom zipper pocket with a removable padded insert that will separate shoes, dirty clothes, toiletries, and other items you want to keep separate for easy access. It also has front velcro straps for a yoga mat, hat, or jacket along with inner adjustable compartments that keep you uber-organized. You name it, this travel tote bag has it. It’s perfect as a carry-on, personal item, or weekend away.

Customer review: “This is a fantastic bag. I traveled in Europe for nine days and it was a game changer! The best feature is the bottom shoe compartment, but overall it’s smooth and sturdy.”

There are tons of small details that make this carry-on one of the best. One standout upon editor testing and customer reviews is the silent swiveling wheels. Not only are they easily maneuvered in 360-degree rotations on all surfaces, but they’re also whisper quiet so you’ll never cause ruckus rolling around at the crack of dawn leaving to catch a flight. Other great features include an expandable zipper that lets you overpack up to one inch, impact-resistant polycarbonate that is lightly textured to avoid scuffs, and the built-in, removable power charger.

Customer review: “When I ordered this carry-on I was expecting a nice piece of luggage, but now that I’ve been using it I can say that it has exceeded my expectations! Everything about this carry-on is spectacular! From the size to the ease of use to the charging system for my electronics. I am a new fan of Arlo Skye products and will be a long-time customer in the future.”

If you haven’t already been sold by Baboon To The Moon’s Instagram ads, let us convince you. The Go Bag is the brand’s most popular product. While it comes it a few different sizes, we’re fans of the 40-liter option because it’s a large carry-on that can fit three to five days’ worth of clothing and act as a duffle bag or backpack. It’s perfect for road trips, beach days, long weekends, and more. The weatherproof outer shell makes this a great option for adventure travel. Plus, it’s easy to clean and has a secure zipper to avoid theft.

Travel expert and content creator, Nikki Tomlin says, “ I wanted to try out Baboon To The Moon bags because I heard they were sustainable and made from recycled materials. I’m so glad I did! The 40-liter size is hands down my go-to ever since I got it. I’m obsessed with it as a carry-on and for its all-around functionality. It can be a side duffle bag or a backpack. The straps are fully adjustable. It’s super comfortable and flexible yet sturdy and durable, allowing me to pack anyway I want for any trip. It doesn’t fall apart or pop open like others, even when stuffed. It’s also super easy to clean. I also have the 60-liter, and I use it for winter trips when I need more gear.”

Customer review : “This is an amazing travel pack! It is so pretty. And made from really strong materials. Also, the zipper on your back ensures that no one can open your back while you are wearing it. I highly recommend this product.”

Dagne Dover bags have been trending for a long time, and it’s safe to say they aren’t going anywhere. Known for its sleek and performance-friendly neoprene, the newer version of the original Dakota bag is made with Air Mesh. It’s a breezier fabric in a new texture with all the features Dagne Dover fans know and love. This backpack is stretchy and padded to provide comfort, protection, and extra room along with a luggage sleeve and fits up to a 16-inch laptop in a separate back compartment. It’s super lightweight and made from 49 recycled plastic bottles. Additionally, the bag comes in three sizes and the large is the perfect personal item or weekender.

Customer review: “This is my second Dakota backpack and the only reason why I got a second one is for the trolley sleeve in the back. This bag is amazing. It holds all of my flight/train essentials. I can grab them easily with all the organization pockets. It’s easy on my shoulders and it’s also amazing for traveling to work or the gym.”

Rimowa has been specializing in and perfecting designer luggage for over 120 years, and the Check-In L is one of the brand’s bestsellers. It’s constructed from high-end aluminum and engineered with durability and longevity as the top priority. Plus, the suitcase is lightweight for everything it offers. It will last forever and serve as a symbol of class, sophistication, and style. On average, you can fit 10 days of travel essentials and extras inside. Some standout features include TSA-approved locks, organizational dividers, a multi-wheel system, and a telescopic handle for comfort and maneuverability. For a lighter version of this popular style, weighing (almost four pounds less) opt for Rimowa’s polycarbonate version .

Customer review: “This was my first Rimowa purchase, and I am very pleased so far. The look is super sleek, modern, and luxurious. The suitcase itself is highly functional with a few perfect features. The wheels are high-quality, which makes walking with the suitcase extremely easy. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a large (but light) checked bag.”

Shay Mitchell sought to create a stylish and affordable luggage brand for gals on the go. She thinks of small details most competitors don’t. The Large Check-In Roller, for example, is made with a built-in weight limit indicator that lets you know when you’ve packed too much. Plus, it’s made with two inches of optional expansion, compression straps for stuffing, and flaps with several pockets. There’s also a TSA-approved combination lock so you can keep your goods safe and secure. It’s easy to roll, modern and stylish, and has a lifetime luggage warranty with each purchase.

Travel expert, editor, and content creator, Kristin Corpuz says, “I love Beis’ suitcases because of how functional they are. I’m typically a carry-on-only kind of girl and the brand’s carry-on never ceases to amaze with how much it can fit inside. I’ve traveled for six weeks through Europe with that suitcase, and plenty of other trips before and after. It’s super sturdy (20+ countries and countless road trips do a lot of damage) and glides easily through the airport. My favorite underrated feature is the padded handle, which makes it super comfortable to maneuver through a crowded terminal.”

Customer review: “This bag is of high-quality design and functionality. I love all the attention to detail like the weight indicator in the handle. How has no other luggage brand come out with this?! I’m always the one that’s overpacking and repacking upon checking my bags in the ticket line. The wheels are well constructed and very smooth like butter. It’s a very good value for the quality of this suitcase.”

At first glance, you can already tell that anything Monos creates is sleek and high-tech. This set is perfect for the minimalist (as the product name entails) or the business traveler who needs to stay organized and appear professional. The Carry-On features a built-in front compartment for easy access to your travel essentials and documents. The Metro Backpack is made from water-resistant nylon twill for daily commutes and weekend trips and is the perfect fitting personal item to the Carry-On. It even has a unique Modular Kit System that snaps on and off. Lastly, the packing cubes are the icing on the cake, compressing your luggage to fit inside perfectly.

Customer review: “This is a fantastic carry-on suitcase! I am extremely pleased with my purchase. I travel 200,000 air miles per year, so I need a carry-on that is lightweight, durable, and flexible. I also need a carry-on that is compliant with the more strict international carry-on size limits. The Monos carry-on has exceeded my expectations! The interior design of the Monos carry-on maximizes space. I like that the bag opens into two halves. When open, the right side of the bag has a compression pad that reduces the volume of my clothing by about 40 percent. I have easily packed for three or four days on just the right side of the bag by using the built-in compression pad. The entire set makes my business travel experience so much easier.”

Another household name this article would be incomplete without is Tumi. This suitcase in particular is made with the brand’s patent-pending DuraFold construction, which folds and reinforces the corners of the hard case with impact-resistant caps for durability and longevity. The design allows you to fit more inside with a hardtop structure. It’s also expandable (so you can pack even more) and features 360-degree swiveling multidirectional wheels for efficient navigation.

Customer review: “I’ve had this about four years. It allows me to pack SO much. I can’t stand to go on vacation without lots of shoes and beauty products. This fits everything even when I doubt there is any possible way. It’s so easy to push through the airport because it wheels around so very easily. My hubby thought this was unnecessary at first but now agrees it is awesome. Sure, there are scuffs but the functionality is so amazing, I couldn’t care less.”

Amazon does it all, and its luggage is actually pretty great if you’re looking for something on a budget. This suitcase checks off all the basic needs of a suitcase. It’s an expandable hard case, has swivel-friendly wheels, is scratch-resistant, and has a full polyester-lined interior. You might not be getting a brand name, but for under $200 and next-day delivery? You can’t beat it. Not to mention, it has over 43,000 near-perfect reviews on Amazon.

Customer review: “Great suitcase for personal and business travel. I made it very well through a two-week stint through Europe and during domestic flights as well.”

Soft-shell suitcases aren’t as popular these days, but there are a ton of benefits to them. And Travelpro makes the best on the market. The most notable feature from customer reviews and editor testing is how much you can pack in this carry-on. It’s super roomy and expandable with organizational pockets on the outside and inside. And there are handles for easy lifting and swivel-friendly wheels. The soft-shell fabric allows you to pack more with less weight.

Customer review : “The wheels are disproportionately large compared to the bag, and this is excellent because they glide very smoothly and never jam, even when on European cobblestones. The wheels lock in alignment, which means they are smooth on all airport surfaces. I can push and let go and expect the bag to stay rolling with me if I need to switch hands on something I’m carrying. The telescoping handle is super sturdy, which was a relief because that’s what broke on my old bag.”

Away The Large Suitcase

The Large Suitcase

Away has become a gold standard of luggage over the past decade and the brand re-released its classics this year with major improvements. The refreshed product line was informed by tens of thousands of interviews, reviews, and direct customer feedback to suit the modern stylish traveler. Key upgrades include redesigned handles that are easier to grip and lift upwards, additional underside grab handles to make it easier to pull from baggage claim, an updated trolly system that’s more comfortable and stable, and refreshed slimmer 360-degree spinner wheels to name a few. There are also new colors, finishes (hello glossy!), organization pockets, and a new-and-improved laundry bag. The latest and greatest from Away fits more, weighs less, and is worth the upgrade if you currently own the original.

Customer review: “This bag has helped me through many travel journeys. Upon returning from a recent trip abroad, I discovered that my bag had been damaged due to mishandling by airport staff. Away promptly replaced the bag. Aside from the A+ customer service, the bag is exceptionally roomy, lightweight, and easy to organize.”

Calpak Evry Starter Bundle

Evry Starter Bundle

Calpak makes it easy when you simply need new luggage. From packing cubes to laundry bags, a carry-on, and a checked bag, this set is a great value for how well-made the products are. Major details of Calpak’s luggage include TSA-approved locks, up to two inches of expansion, bottom grab handles, an included luggage tag and packing cubes, and a divider with multiple interior pockets. It’s super stylish when you can strut through the airport with a matching set, and this one from Calpak allows that to happen without entirely breaking the bank.

Customer review: “I love every CalPak item that I own and these were no exception! I’ve been eyeing the starter bundle for weeks and finally went for it when my luggage broke. You get a lot of bang for your buck and the quality is great. I’ve already traveled with the checked luggage and there were minimal scratches from the airline luggage handlers. I really love how functional all of CalPak’s products are!”

Everyday Backpack

Customer review: “The magnetic latch (and magnet pockets and shoulder straps) and the origami dividers are what makes this bag for me. The fact that I have the option to either have a ton of different sections or a completely wide open space is amazing. It’s so versatile! The other thing I really appreciate about this bag (and this company), is the attention to detail.”

Paravel Aviator100 Carry On Plus

Aviator100 Carry On Plus

Paravel is a sustainable luggage brand that makes most of its products from recycled materials. The entire line of luggage is great, but the Carry-On Plus is a tried-and-true favorite. This one is a limited-edition version, in a glacial blue color inspired by Icelandic glaciers and the surrounding sea. Paravel has an entire line of colors of the Carry-On Plus —all made with an excellent swivel system, interior compression, organizational pockets, a removable laundry bag, and more. Paravel is a forward forward-thinking travel brand that pays attention to high-tech details, construction, and sustainability, all in classic travel and retro-inspired designs, making it a luggage brand that stands out from the crowd.

Customer review: “My Carry On-Plus easily fits a week’s worth of clothes and is brilliantly and beautifully designed. The wheels make it super easy to navigate through airports and plane aisles. Fits in most overhead compartments. The laundry bag is a nice extra touch. Plenty of inside pocket space. Perfect pairing for my medium tote bag.”

elle line break

Luggage should improve your travel experience, keeping you organized and moving efficiently. The type of luggage you should invest in depends on your type of travel, but generally speaking, the most important things to look out for in the best luggage brands are wheelability, if it’s a rolling suitcase, type of materials, overall weight, and organizational details. Checked luggage shouldn’t weigh more than 12 pounds while carry-on luggage averages eight pounds. Backpacks and duffle bags are easier to store and far lighter. Most of the items on this list check off all of these boxes and more.

Top Product Overview

Top products.

Samsonite is the leader in the luggage market and it deserves to be on this list. Their product range includes everything from affordable suitcases to some of the best luxury luggage you can buy.

The luxury luggage from Samsonite is made from the best materials, and it has all those extra features that make travel more convenient. Plus, the brand has such a diverse product range that you can find any type of luggage you want within their product range, and you’ll usually have more than one option.

Samsonite Black Label is what the brand calls their most luxurious luggage. These bags are often unique in some way, whether they’re the lightest or most feature-packed Samsonite has to offer.

Samsonite Black Label Lite-Shock

Samsonite Lite-Shock Suitcase, 81 cm, 124 Liters, Black

Lite-Shock is a collection of hardshell spinner suitcases that are made from woven polypropylene. This is one of Samsonite’s priciest luggage collections, and it’s also one of their best. If you like traveling light and you don’t want a heavy suitcase, look no further.

All the luggage from this collection is incredibly lightweight. And I do mean incredibly – the 21” carry-on weight a mere 3.7 lbs. That’s truly amazing for a hardside suitcase with spinner wheels! This luggage is great for people who just can’t be bothered to lug around heavy suitcases, but also for those who tend to go overboard when packing.

If you often have to pay overweight luggage fees, a Lite-Shock suitcase could change your life. The 32” checked suitcase weighs 6.2 lbs, which is roughly 5 lbs less than similarly sized suitcases from different brands. It’s worth noting that this luggage is stripped of most features, but that’s what it takes to make it weigh so little.

Product Information

  • Dimensions: 32” x 21.5” x 13”
  • Weight: 6.2 lbs
  • Capacity: 124 liters

Samsonite Black Label Cosmolite

Samsonite Black Label Cosmolite 3.0 33' Spinner (One Size, Pearl)

Cosmolite is another luxurious Black Label collection from Samsonite. It features lightweight suitcases made from Curv material, which is the toughest and most durable material Samsonite uses for luggage. Cosmolite cases are all incredibly durable, yet so lightweight that a large checked case weighs less than an average ABS carry-on.

Cosmolite cases feature a minimal interior with one lined and one unlined compartment, a single pocket, divider, and elastic straps inside. They also have single spinner wheels, a height-adjustable single-barrel wheel handle, and TSA-friendly locks for safety.

Samsonite’s Cosmolite collection does not feature expandable capacity, and I certainly won’t praise it for organizational capabilities. I will say that the extra-large (34”) spinner weighs a mere 7.7 lbs. A Globe-Trotter carry-on case weighs more than this bag, and the difference in capacity is around 100 liters in favor of the Samsonite.

If you’re looking for exceptionally lightweight and durable luggage, and you’re willing to compromise on other features, the Black Label Cosmolite collection might be exactly what you want.

  • Dimensions: 33.9” x 22.8” x 14.2”
  • Weight: 7.7 lbs
  • Capacity: 144 liters

Briggs And Riley

Briggs And Riley is similar to Samsonite in the sense that their product range includes luxury luggage, but it’s not their main focus. You can also get some more affordable luggage from this brand, but you can also get bags that are in the same price range as Tumi and Rimowa.

So, what makes them one of the best luxury luggage brands? It’s their patented CX compression system. If you prefer expandable suitcases and you often return home with a heavier suitcase than you left with, you need one of these suitcases.

Their unique compression system lets you pack up to 34% more things inside, while still retaining the original size. It’s surreal what they managed to do with the compression system, and it earned them a spot on this list.

And there are other things that make this brand deserving of a spot on this list. Their luggage usually has a wheel handle mounted to the exterior of the suitcase. It doesn’t protrude into the packing compartment, so you get a smooth packing experience plus some extra space. Plus, their cases are made from premium materials and have all the features that are common on high-end luggage.

Briggs & Riley Baseline

Briggs & Riley Baseline Softside Checked Extra Large Spinner Luggage 32 inch. Expandable Suitcase with Wheels and Compression Packing System, Black

The Baseline suitcase from Briggs & Riley is one of the best bags they ever made. It features a single packing compartment with CX compression, sturdy spinner wheels, and an external wheel handle. The CX compression system lets you pack about 33% more stuff in this bag, which is pretty amazing considering the already generous capacity.

Also, there are multiple external and internal pockets, for impeccable organization and easy access. This even includes a tiny pocket on the back of the suitcase, which is absolutely perfect for the things you want within your hand’s reach.

In addition to that, this luggage features a TSA-friendly lock for secure travel, as well as a garment suiter inside. The nylon construction is tough and durable, while the corner reinforcements significantly improve the overall impact resistance of the bags.

The Baseline suitcase is available in six different sizes and you can see them all on the link below. The dimensions listed below are of the largest suitcase in the collection.

Let’s say that luxury luggage brands are like a Pyramid – at the bottom, you have a brand like Samsonite that does luxe luggage but also more affordable options for the average traveler. At the very top of that pyramid, you would have Rimowa, the brand behind the first polycarbonate suitcase ever.

Rimowa is a luxury luggage brand that’s easily the leader in that market. They only make hardside luggage and it’s either made from polycarbonate or aluminum – the most durable materials that can be used to manufacture luggage.

If you’re looking for luggage that is exceptionally durable but also lets everyone around you know you’re loaded, Rimowa cases are perfect for you. They’re durable, reliable, stylish, and they’re famous enough people will know exactly how much you spent on your luggage.

Rimowa Essential Lite

The Essential Lite collection from Rimowa features five great suitcases. The luggage is made from polycarbonate, and it’s the lightest luggage you can buy from the brand. Whereas most of their other luggage features a dual-barrel telescopic handle, this particular collection is equipped with single barrel handles. They’re still height-adjustable and incredibly durable, but they also weigh much less.

The five bags in the collection are two carry-ons, two checked bags, and a small suitcase for kids. The bags differ in size, but all the other features are the same.

You get dual spinner wheels on all the Essential Lite luggage, as well as a wheel handle with stage-free adjustment. There’s also a TSA-friendly lock for security, as well as mesh dividers for easy organization.

The specifications listed below are of the largest suitcase in the collection, but you can check out the rest on the same link below.

  • Dimensions: 30.8” x 20.5” x 10.7!
  • Weight: 8.2 lbs
  • Capacity: 91.2 liters

Rimowa Original Luggage

We can’t talk about Rimowa luggage without mentioning their most popular suitcase ever. The Rimowa Original collection boasts the design that initially launched in the 1950s, and which remains one of the most recognizable luggage designs ever.

The luggage is made from anodized aluminum for excellent durability. Also, the Original collection features a few collaborations with other designers, so if you’re into designer luggage you should definitely check it out.

The Original collection features more than 15 different suitcases, including Rimowa’s signature trunks. Whether you’re looking for a compact carry-on or the biggest checked suitcase you can buy, there’s an option for you in the Rimowa Original collection.

As for the other features, you get sturdy spinner wheels, a handle that allows for stage-free adjustment, double TSA-friendly latch locks, and flex dividers inside. You can see most of the luggage from this collection on the link below and the specifications listed here are of the carry-on suitcase.

  • Dimensions: 21.7” x 15.8” x 9.1”
  • Weight: 9.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 34.8 liters

Tumi is one of the most versatile luxury luggage brands out there. They’re a favorite among frequent travelers because their bags are incredibly durable and they offer an excellent warranty. Tumi makes excellent luggage, whether we’re talking about small underseat bags or massive checked suitcases.

Tumi also makes duffel bags, travel totes, and even backpacks. No matter what type of luggage you need, Tumi is the brand that will have something for you.

They also design classic suitcases, both softshell and hardshell. All their bags are made with premium materials and have the features you need for convenient travel. Their most popular luggage collections are Tegra-Lite and Alpha, so let’s talk a little about those.

Sterling Pacific

Sterling Pacific luggage is undoubtedly worth buying if you’re looking for the strongest aluminum luggage around.

When it comes to strength and longevity, this brand is at an entirely new level. The luggage’ reinforced A380 aluminum corners, incredibly tough extruded aluminum body, recessed, tougher-than-average wheels, and aluminum wheel housings all add to its durability.

If you frequently travel and require a strong suitcase, these bags are absolutely worth the money because everything about them is sturdy and well-made.

They also add some luxury luggage details that high-end travelers will appreciate like the stitched Italian leather handles and complementary Amenity & Care Kit that comes with each case.

This is indeed a suitcase you will be using for decades to come and heads will be turning as you walk through the gate at the airport for sure!

Tumi Tegra-Lite

TUMI Tegra-Lite Max Large Trip Expandable Packing Case Suitcase - Rolling Bag for Men and Women - Durable and Lightweight Hardside Luggage with TSA Lock, Hanger Bracket & Telescopic Handle

The Tegra-Lite collection features luggage made from Tegris, an innovative material that is absolutely spectacular. It’s tougher than polycarbonate, which is considered the best luggage material. Tegris is a thermoplastic composite that starts as polypropylene and ends up looking just like carbon fiber. It is lightweight, durable, impact-resistant, and it’s entirely recyclable.

Tegra-Lite luggage features TSA combination locks, dual spinner wheels, and a three-stage wheel handle. The luggage interior has a garment sleeve for suits, compression straps, and three zippered pockets. In addition to that, all Tegra-Lite suitcases have expandable capacity.

Another thing that makes Tegra-Lite luggage great is the external front pocket with lockable zippers. It’s rare to get external pockets on hardside luggage, and even rarer to get pockets with lockable zippers.

  • Dimensions: 29” x 20” x 12.5”
  • Weight: 14.5 lbs
  • Capacity: 102 liters

Victorinox is famous for its Swiss Army Knives and a lot of people don’t even know that the brand manufactures luggage, let alone that it’s one of the best luxury luggage brands out there. They make all types of luggage from duffel bags to large, checked suitcases, so no matter what kind of luggage you are looking for, there’s something for you in their product range.

Why choose Victorinox? You get amazing Swiss quality, a great 1 + 10 years warranty, and the modern features necessary for comfortable travels. Victorinox luggage is made from high-end materials and it’s designed to fit the needs of the frequent traveler. Check out some of their more popular bags to see what I’m talking about.

TUMI - Alpha Continental Expandable 4-Wheeled Carry-On - Roller Bag for Extended Trips or Weekend Getaways - Carry-On Luggage with 4 Spinner Wheels - Travel Suitcase for Men & Women - Black

Tumi Alpha is the brand’s most popular softside luggage collection. The collection features everything from a wheeled duffel bag to a checked suitcase, so there are plenty of options for all travelers.

The Alpha luggage is made from ballistic nylon that combines special coating with a unique weave to make it significantly more durable than basic nylon. These suitcases all feature sturdy spinner wheels, a height-adjustable wheel handle, and TSA-friendly locks.

Most Alpha luggage has an expandable capacity, but some of the smaller carry-ons don’t. If you end up buying a suitcase from this collection, just check whether it’s an expandable bag or not, to avoid any surprises.

Internal features of these suitcases include zippered pockets, compression straps, a suiter section, and a large mesh zip pocket.

Victorinox Spectra 2.0

Victorinox Spectra 2.0 Hardside Spinner Suitcase, Black, Checked-Large (30')

Spectra 2.0 is a collection of ten hardside suitcases. It features everything from a carry-on to a 32” expandable suitcase, and most sizes are available with both expandable and non-expandable capacity.

This luggage features a durable polycarbonate shell, smooth spinner wheels, and a height-adjustable wheel handle. There’s a TSA-friendly lock to protect the contents of the bag, as well as corner guards that improve the durability.

The interior of Spectra 2.0 luggage is lined, with compression straps in one compartment and a zippered mesh divider in the other. The larger checked bags from this collection even feature a tiny pocket for a Swiss Army Knife – you don’t get this in the carry-on bags since it’s not allowed to carry pocket knives in them. All Spectra 2.0 suitcases also feature a zippered pocket inside.

  • Dimensions: 18.5” x 29.6” x 10.6”
  • Weight: 8.8 lbs
  • Capacity: 73 liters

Globe-Trotter Luggage

Most of the brands I talked about so far pride themselves on using cutting-edge technology to create the best and most modern luggage in the world. Globe-Trotter is entirely different – their luggage features that staple vintage design and all their bags are hand-made. If you like the vintage aesthetic, there’s no doubt you’ll fall in love with this brand.

The retro design is just to get you interested – it’s the craftsmanship and high-end materials that make this luxury luggage so irresistible. The checked cases are made with Vulcanised Fibreboard, a material that is patented by Globe-Trotter. It acts like aluminum in terms of durability and impact resistance, but it’s 30% lighter. The best part is that it’s all cellulose, so it’s perfectly sustainable.

Globe-Trotter even makes bespoke luggage and that’s the sign of a true luxury luggage brand. Book an appointment and you’ll get exactly the luggage you want.

It’s worth noting that this is some of the most expensive luxury luggage you can buy. Even a two-wheeled carry-on suitcase will set you back almost $2,000 and you might want to consider some other brands if you’re prioritizing performance and convenience over luxury features and status.

Centenary Carry-On 4 Wheels

The Centenary carry-on is one of the brand’s most popular in-cabin bags. It’s a 21” suitcase with spinner wheels, a 34-liter capacity, and luxe leather accents all over the case.

This is a zipperless suitcase with latch locks. Unfortunately, they’re not TSA-friendly locks but instead come with a key that only you have access to. That’s not very convenient if you’re going to travel across the US with this bag, since you risk TSA agents just breaking it open on your first trip.

The case can fit enough items for 2-3 days, so it’s best for business trips and long weekends. The capacity is not expandable, as is the case with most zipperless hardsides.

It’s worth noting that this luggage is 21.7” tall with wheels and handles, and it meets the carry-on requirements of all major airlines. The rigid construction and non-expandable capacity make it extremely difficult to overpack in this case, so it’s unlikely you’ll ever be forced to check this bag because of excessive weight.

  • Dimensions: 15.7” x 21.7” x 8.3”
  • Weight: 9.3 lbs
  • Capacity: 34 liters

What To Look For

Luxury luggage vs. designer luggage.

Luxury luggage is not just luggage with a very high price tag. That would be designer luggage – suitcases from brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and others. Luxury luggage includes bags that are made from the best and most durable materials, with all the features necessary for high-end luggage, as well as an excellent warranty.

Some designer brands manufacture their own luggage and others partner with established luggage brands. Dior likes to partner with Rimowa and a Dior x Rimowa luggage is both designer and incredibly luxe.

But here’s the thing – there aren’t that many differences between a basic Rimowa suitcase and a Dior x Rimowa one. The main difference between the two is the branding on the shell, which doesn’t impact the way you use the luggage at all.

And of course, there’s also a $2,000 difference in the price point. Unless you want everyone at the airport to know exactly how rich you are, there aren’t that many pros to buying designer luggage.

Type Of Luggage

Although all these brands are amazing, some are better at certain things than others. If you’re in the market for an aluminum suitcase, Rimowa is easily the best option for you. But if you want a softshell suitcase, you won’t find anything in their product range. You will find several amazing suitcases from Tumi and even Samsonite, so don’t limit yourself to just one brand.

If you’re looking for an expandable suitcase you won’t find anything better than Briggs & Riley. In any case, each of these brands has something that sets them apart from the rest, and which makes them worthy of the spot on this list.

To get the best of the best, you need to know exactly which features are a priority for you, and then simply go with the brand that excels in that area. I’ve mentioned whenever there’s something that one brand does better than the others, it should be pretty easy to find the perfect luggage for you!

Best Luxury Luggage Brands: Our Top Picks

Not quite sure which of these luxury luggage brands is the best option for you? It’s okay – go with one of our top picks, depending on what you are prioritizing in your perfect luggage.

If you prefer luggage with expandable capacity, just pick up a Briggs & Riley bag . Their CX Compression system is impressive enough that you’ll never want to go back to simple expansion zippers. It lets you pack up to 34% more in the suitcase while retaining its original, non-expanded size. And you get all the other features that matter like internal pockets, spinner wheels, and a reliable wheel handle.

  • Expandable Luggage: This swivel wheeled bag expands 2.5 inches for up to 25% more packing space. Cinch-down mesh garment panels keep contents from shifting and minimize wrinkling, Outsider handle provides greater interior capacity. Free TSA lock included
  • Durable Construction: Made with ballistic nylon outer fabric that resists wear, moisture, dirt and abrasion. A lockable double zipper pull keeps contents secure and SpeedThru pocket allows quick access to travel items at security checkpoints

For durable hardside luggage, you can never go wrong with Rimowa . The brand invented polycarbonate and aluminum luggage, and it’s very hard to compete with their quality. Apart from incredible durability, Rimowa luggage also offers all the features a modern traveler needs like height-adjustable wheel handles, TSA locks, internal pockets, etc.

Another brand that does hardside luggage really well is Samsonite . The Black Label collections feature some of the lightest suitcases ever made, so pick up a Lite-Shock case if you want a checked suitcase that weighs less than your current carry-on. You won’t get any fancy features, but you will get a feather-light and extremely durable suitcase. If you often pay fees for overweight baggage, a Black Label suitcase might be the perfect option for you.

  • Made with Curv material : extremely strong, incredibly light.
  • Limited 10 year global warranty

Still haven’t found that one perfect suitcase? You can see even more bags from these amazing luxury luggage brands on the links below!

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Backpacks, weekenders, duffels, and spinners: with so many different types of luggage all claiming to be able to make your travels easier, choosing the right one can be daunting. And, once you’ve narrowed it down to the specific style you want, it then becomes a matter of quality and functionality. Which luggage actually holds up through rough travel? Which ones will keep your things organized? Which are easiest to carry? Luckily, our team of expert travel editors have tried pretty much everything — and we’re sharing our favorites.

Whether you’re somewhat new to travel or just looking to update your collection with tried-and-trusted picks, you can rely on the list below. From totes to check-in bags, these are the luggage pieces Travel + Leisure editors love so much, we travel with them again and again.

Lambert The Bali Carry-on

Lambert

The best types of luggage are pieces that are just as stylish as they are functional — which is why we love Lambert’s Bali Carry-on so much. The spinner rolls beautifully, zips up with ease, and boasts TSA locks for extra security. Inside, you’ll find a spacious main compartment fit for a week’s worth of clothes, as well as three additional pockets, a laptop compartment, and three drawstring bags for shoes or laundry. Plus, there’s something so dapper about the black-trimmed front pocket and brand name emblazoned across the front.

“This Montreal-based luggage company makes a variety of stylish luggage pieces that are super durable,” writer Anna Popp said. “I love the carry-on with a front laptop pocket for extra storage and the main compartment has plenty of space for a weeklong trip. The color options are my favorite part with sleek black, classy black and white, and a stunning light pink 'strawberry parfait' colorway.”

The Details: 14 x 22 x 9 inches | Polycarbonate, polyester

Away The Trunk

Need a little (or should we say a lot of) extra space? Consider snagging Away’s The Trunk. At 31 by 17 by 13.7 inches, it’s one of the largest suitcases on our list. Despite its size, though, it never feels cumbersome — its 360-degree wheels glide over all types of surfaces, and at just 12.1 pounds, it's light enough to easily hoist in and out of car trunks and up and down stairs. It’s even equipped with several pockets and a compression pad to maximize space and organization.

“I'll be the first to admit that I never understood the hype of Away until I got The Trunk in the limited edition magenta pink shade,” Popp said. “The 30/70 design has completely changed the way I pack for longer trips and I love it for packing oddly-shaped items like ski gear or bulky clothing. While the magenta shade isn't around anymore, the trunk is available in several permanent colorways, like sorbet orange and coastal blue.”

Arlo Skye The Weekender

This is a do-it-all piece of luggage if we’ve ever seen one. It works wonderfully as your sole piece of luggage for shorter trips or gym runs, and it also makes a great carry-on to pair with larger suitcases on longer journeys. It has plenty of pockets, including dedicated compartments for a laptop and a pair of shoes, and a trolley sleeve to attach it to the handle of your wheeled luggage. You can choose between a monochromatic black or a mint color scheme, and then decide if you’d rather carry it by its top handles or detachable shoulder strap.

“I’ve been looking for an upgrade to my carry-on duffel bag that I’ve been using for the past 15 years, and I finally found something I love with Arlo Skye’s The Weekender,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I like that it has some structure to it, but you can still fit it underneath an airplane seat if you need to. I usually check a suitcase as well, so I use this for my in-flight necessities and valuables that I want within reach. This has a laptop sleeve, a shoe compartment, and side pockets that make it convenient to store important items like your phone, charger, passport, and wallet so you don’t have to go digging around.”

The Details: 20.5 x 9.1 x 11.4 inches | Nylon, polyester, copper, nickel

Béis Check-in Roller

This is the ultimate check-in bag. It’s the perfect size for the average trip, it’s durable, and it comes in some of the most beautiful colors we’ve seen in luggage, including slate, atlas pink, and olive. It also comes with several useful extras, like compression straps, dividers with pockets, TSA-approved locks, and expandability. We especially love that it’s stain-resistant, meaning it’s a low-maintenance option that’ll look new for years.

“I really can't recommend Beis' larger luggage enough,” senior editor Maya Kachroo-Levine said. “It closes seamlessly no matter how much you pack into it. The compartments are extremely well organized, and the exterior shell REALLY holds up. I've recently learned to love myself and trust the universe enough to check a bag (it's very freeing), and I have to say, Beis' Medium roller is large enough to fit everything — and I mean everything — I need for a long trip, or a trip where I need to bring a ton of winter layers, while still feeling manageable to cart around an airport.”

The Details: 28.3 x 17.7 x 11 inches | Polycarbonate, PVC, polyester, vegan leather, nylon | 10.2 pounds

Calpak Luka Duffel Bag

We’d be lying if we said we hadn’t considered using this bag as a pillow during particularly long layovers — that’s how soft and cushioned it is. Made of lightweight yet durable polyester, the Luka is the perfect squishy-yet-structured carry-on. It’s full of pockets, including a subtle shoe space, water bottle slots, and a large hidden pocket on the front exterior. Many of the pockets are paired with amazingly smooth zippers that have never snagged or broken on us. You can grab it in four neutral permanent colors or 14 limited edition shades including gunmetal, plum, and celery.

“Duffels and weekenders are always my go-to carry-ons, and I think I’ve finally found ‘the one’ in Calpak’s Luka Duffel,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I’ve recommended it countless times in the months that I’ve had it, mainly because I’m obsessed with how soft and squishy yet durable it is. It fits under plane seats and packs down under my bed for storage with zero effort, but it also efficiently protects items like a laptop, shoes, wallets, and more. The cushioned handles mean I can carry it everywhere pain-free. I’ve even had strangers approach me asking where it’s from!”

The Details: 12 x 16 x 7 inches | Polyester | 2.1 pounds

July Carry On Trunk

If you’re searching for a trunk on the smaller side, look no further than July’s Carry-on Trunk. It’s slightly larger than a typical carry-on spinner, but it’s still small enough to bring into the plane cabin with you. Everything about this trunk just feels luxurious — from the high-gloss polycarbonate shell and zipperless closure to the whisper-quiet spinner wheels and personalized handle height. Inside the trunk, you’ll find a stain-proof laundry bag, July’s Y-strap compression system, a water-resistant lining, and a deep main compartment made for stowing larger items. It even comes with an ejectable, quick-charging USB-C battery.

“I’ll admit, the first thing that drew me to this trunk was its sleek appearance (I have the light sand shade, which is more of a light pink in real life),” Maglin said. “But once I started using it, I realized just how durable it is, too. I expected the ultra-glossy exterior to scuff easily, but so far it hasn’t at all, despite being thrown around on a couple of trips. I’m also all about the customizable handle height, being the five foot gal that I am.”

Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Collection

We may be biased, but our team believes there’s nothing better than Travelpro’s Travel + Leisure collection, which includes everything from hard-sided checked bags to backpacks to totes. All nine pieces are well-constructed using materials like polycarbonate and leather, while all of the spinners expand and glide smoothly over all surfaces. The spinners and spinner sets are available in three neutral colorways, while the backpacks and weekender bag are available in four.

“It may be wildly self-indulgent to recommend this luggage set, but hear me out: I've taken these well-built suitcases on a circuit around India, on multiple cruise ships, on short hops, and on road trips,” news director Paul Brady said. “And they're still as solid as the day I got 'em. Even more surprising: The wheels are still spinning smoothly, even on rough sidewalks and down cobblestone streets.”

The Details: 15.5 x 14.75 x 4.75 to 30 x 17 x 14 inches | Materials vary by bag | 2 to 12.6 pounds

Caraa Pet Carrier

Caraa

Traveling with pets may not be the world’s easiest feat, but the Caraa Pet Carrier sure does streamline the process. It’s designed like actual luggage and boasts a trolley strap so you can wheel it atop your spinner suitcase, plus it has multiple external and interior pockets. The lightweight yet sturdy bag also fits dogs and cats up to 18 pounds, features a collapsible frame for storage, and has a removable sherpa lining that can be machine washed.

“My main complaint with dog carriers is that they don’t have enough pockets for my things,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “Much like other Caraa bags I love, this option has ample large external pockets so I can stay organized, as well as one pocket inside the carrier for my dog Beau’s collar and harness. I personally love the hot pink, but it comes in black too — and at a great price.”

The Details: 8 x 16.5 x 10.5 inches | Vegan leather, nylon | 3.5 pounds

Rimowa Original Cabin

Rimowa is known for its luxury products, and the Original Cabin is no exception. With this suitcase in tow, you just may feel like the most fashionable person on your flight thanks to an extra-sturdy aluminum exterior and gorgeous monochromatic shades like silver and arctic blue. The interior is equally as impressive — it contains a detachable divider with pockets on each side, which can be adjusted based on the items you pack. Other features we love are TSA combination locks, zipperless closure, side and top handles, and a smooth telescoping handle.

“No suitcase in the history of suitcases makes me feel fancier than this sleek Rimowa,” Parker said. “I could be in seat 2A or 22A, all dressed up or wearing a matching sweatsuit, and I immediately feel like I have my act together. Despite its relatively small size, it has compression pads on both clamshell halves so I can fit all my essentials and not worry about them flopping out when I open it up. Vibes and functionality: 10/10.”

The Details: 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inches | Aluminum, polyester, plastic | 9.5 pounds

Away Bigger Carry-on

A little extra space is the most precious gift you can give yourself on the road. That said, we’re loving Away’s The Bigger Carry-on. Like its standard counterpart, this spinner boasts interior dividers, mesh organization pockets, and compression straps inside of a sturdy, lightweight polycarbonate shell. But unlike the standard version, it can accommodate up to nine outfits and items up to 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6 inches. And despite its larger size, it still adheres to most airlines’ carry-on size limits.

“The Away Bigger Carry On has become the MVP of my travel arsenal,” senior editor Jasmine Grant said. “It's stuck by me through various types of trips — from weeks spent island hopping in Thailand to two-day work trips. I've had the suitcase for about four years now, and aside from minor scratches and scuffs, it's held up extremely well. I also find that the size is absolutely perfect. It can fit a surprising amount of clothes — and even when it's been stuffed to the brim, the internal compression features help pack down my stuff so I'm able to close the suitcase without incident.”

The Details: 22.7 x 15.4 x 9.6 inches | Polycarbonate, polyester, leather | 7.9 pounds

Harber London Classic Rucksack

Harber London

If you’re more of a backpack person when it comes to travel, Harber London’s Classic Rucksack is the way to go. It feels high end thanks to leather detailing and a double buckle top closure, but where it really shines is in the organization department: it has multiple pockets both internally and externally including both laptop and tablet compartments, in addition to a spacious main compartment. It even comes with useful extras like a detachable magnetic key chain, swiveling shoulder straps, a trolley sleeve, front carry straps, and anti-scratch zip teeth.

“For me, this is the perfect bag for every occasion, from daily commutes to international vacations,” updates writer Taylor Fox said. “It's handmade with full grain leathers and is thoughtfully designed with magnetic closures, hidden side pockets for valuables, and of course the coveted luggage sleeve. It's the perfect size for a personal item as it fits all travel essentials and has plenty of padded interior pockets, so I can pack both my laptop and iPad knowing they're well-protected.”

The Details: 15.7 x 11.4 x 5.9 inches | Recycled plastic bottle fabric, leather | 3.3 pounds

Glam-aholic Lifestyle Medium Checked Luggage

Glam-aholic Lifestyle

Add a little whimsy to your travel style with Glam-aholic Lifestyle’s Medium Checked Luggage. This suitcase comes in three colors (black, brown, and light pink) and each includes the fun phrase, “Travel like a G!” printed across the front. Beyond its eye-catching appearance, we also appreciate its interior compression straps, zippered divider to keep your items in place, and interior pockets for organization. 360-degree wheels, a sturdy telescoping handle, and top and side handles make this luggage pick super easy to maneuver in any situation.

“Glam-aholic luggage can hang with all the other brands when it comes to its durability and functionality,” senior editor Danielle Pointdujour said. “But where it really pops is with its fun fresh colors and ‘Travel like a G!’ branding ensuring that you stand out and that your luggage doesn't get lost in the mix at baggage claim.”

Victorinox Spectra 3.0 Frequent Flyer Carry-on

This heavy-duty spinner is just as reliable as it is stylish, and our editors just can’t get enough of its hardside protection and variety of pockets and compartments. It has pretty much everything you’d ever want from a carry-on bag, including a quick-access, locking front compartment, an organization panel, and 20 percent expandability — plus it’s made of recycled polycarbonate, so you can feel good about your purchase and travels. You can even choose to have it engraved for a more personal touch.

“For me, hard-sided luggage has a flair that soft-sided bags can’t compare to,” senior editor Samantha Falewée said. “Another game changer: the exterior zipper pocket on this suitcase is great for storing important, easily-accessible bits like my laptop and earbuds. The color is a deep, eye-catching red — actually a much richer tone than what's shown on the store's website — that feels like a throwback to Victorinox’s classic Swiss Army knife.”

The Details: 21.7 x 9.1 x 13.8 x 7.3 inches | Polycarbonate | 7.3 pounds

Samsonite Stryde 2 Carry-on Spinner

Samsonite is one of the most trusted luggage brands on the market. If you’re looking to add a piece from the classic company to your collection, we recommend the Stryde 2 Carry-on Spinner. It’s basically a traveler's dream thanks to a height-adjustable telescoping handle with comfort grip, interior pockets, multiple compression straps, dividers, a WetPak for damp clothing, a snap-in packing cube, and a USB port. The exterior even boasts an interesting wave-like design which helps with durability and identifiability at the airport.

“My first suitcase was a Samsonite and ever since, I've had a special spot in my heart for these incredibly reliable bags.” write Alexandra Domrongchai said. “Since then, they have only gotten better and one of my latest favorites is this Stryde model that features a durable polycarbonate hardshell to keep my belongings secure and four multi-directional wheels for seamless maneuvering around the airport. Oh, and I always know which bag is mine at the carousel thanks to its unique design.”

The Details: 22 x 14 x 9 inches | Polycarbonate Recyclex | 7.6 pounds

July Carry On

July is quickly becoming the premier new luggage brand (this is its second appearance on this list, after all). The Carry-on is not only stylish thanks to attractive color options and matching chrome corner protectors, it’s also ultra-durable and designed with compression straps, mesh pockets, and dividers, so you know all your items will remain in place through turbulent flights and bumpy car rides. Like many July spinners, the Carry-on features a luxurious click-close rather than zippers, which makes it easier to close and harder to break into.

“This bag has it all: a lightweight build, protective hardshell, and TSA-approved locks,” Domrongchai said. “It also doesn't hurt that this suitcase is incredibly stylish, and it definitely gives me main character energy walking through the airport. And, I can actually pack more in this bag than my other ones thanks to its compressive luggage straps and spacious pockets.”

Lo & Sons Rowledge

Lo & Sons

Not every travel backpack has to be enormous and bulky. The cute and somewhat compact Large Rowledge Backpack by Lo & Sons is perfectly sleek in that it fits all the essentials without taking up too much space on your travels — and it fits effortlessly under a plane seat. In fact, it’s small enough to use as a personal item, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in the space department. It boasts tons of pockets both internally and externally, including a dedicated protective laptop sleeve. It’s even convertible, so you can choose to use it as a tote as well. Perhaps our favorite thing about the backpack, though, is the option to choose from four interior colors, including lavender and azure blue.

“When it comes to personal items, I'm a backpack girl, and I went with the Lo & Sons Rowledge based on a recommendation from a travel writer friend who also happens to be a professional packer ,” editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “She didn't let me down: the Rowledge looks professional enough for a business trip but trendy enough for a girls' getaway, and the smart design means there's a pocket for everything I need. It fits more than I expected, but it also manages to help keep me organized, so I can actually find what I packed.”

The Details: 11.5 x 6.75 x 16.5 inches | Nylon, Nappa leather | 3.2 pounds

Antler Clifton Cabin with Pocket

Antler

Instead of awkwardly unzipping your whole suitcase on the floor of your concourse when you need something out of it, keep an option like this in your luggage collection. Thanks to an extra-large front pocket, you can easily grab a few essentials out of your bag without causing a scene. The pocket has multiple slots, including a dedicated spot for your laptop, tablet, travel documents, and other small gadgets. On top of that, this spinner is durable, packed with interior pockets, and designed with reliable, TSA-approved locks. And at just 7.27 pounds, it’s easy for any traveler to bring with them from points A to B.

“This London-based brand makes some of my favorite luggage, and the Clifton is its best seller,” Ruggiero said. “To me, a hardside suitcase with an outer pocket (in this case a waterproof, padded outer pocket) is the best of both worlds — you get the protective shell, a sleek look, and easy access to your laptop, passport, and other essentials.”

Wm. J. Mills & Co. Executive Cambridge Bag

 Wm. J. Mills & Co.

Are you a rough traveler? If your bags tend to come back from each trip a little more scuffed and tattered than they were before, you need something extra-durable, like the Cambridge Bag. It’s a spacious, no-frills option that’ll keep your belongings in place and intact, sans the scratches and tears another bag might receive. You’ll love using it as a carry-on, a weekender, and even an elevated gym bag thanks to its sturdy top handles, padded shoulder strap, and antique brass zipper and hardware.

“This handsome bag recently replaced the beloved (but falling apart) canvas weekender I’ve been using for the past 30 years,” deputy photo editor Skye Senterfeit said. “I’m usually a carry-on only traveler, and while the Cambridge’s overall dimensions are a hair larger than allowed, it should easily slide into any overhead bin unless you’ve really overstuffed it (and there's also an equally handsome, slightly smaller Boston model if you prefer to size down). I fully expect this bag to hold up for at least the next 30 years of travel.”

The Details: 22 x 14.5 x 11 inches | Canvas | 1 pound

Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 28-inch Large Checked Spinner

Delsey luggage is classic, reliable, and inspired by vintage styles of yore. If you’re looking to get your hands on a Delsey piece, we suggest the Chatelet Air 2.0 Large Spinner. Beyond its gorgeous appearance, we’re obsessed with just how user-friendly it is. It rolls effortlessly, it zips open and closed smoothly, and it seems to have a spot for everything due to its spacious interior and abundant pockets. It even has an eye-catching coral-hued interior to set it apart from other suitcases in your collection. If you love the Large Spinner, you can also cop the Chatelet Air 2.0 in five other sizes ranging from an underseater to a trunk .

“As a senior editor at T+L, I get plenty of opportunities to test luggage, but I’ll never give up this checked Delsey’s spot in my closet,” senior editor Lydia Price said. “Huge zippered compartments on each side make it easy to stay organized or pack in a hurry, and it glides like a dream when you’re running through an airport. I’ve taken it on a city-hopping trip to India and a ski trip to Japan, and it’s proved sturdy enough to protect all my clothes and gear on multiple journeys to baggage claim. Laundry bags, a TSA-approved lock, and odor-controlling fabric top it all off to create a true traveler’s dream.”

The Details: 30 x 20.75 x 12.75 inches | Polycarbonate | 11.11 pounds

Paravel ‘I Like You Even When I'm Hungry’ Medium Cabana Tote

Paravel

This fun tote works just as well as your carry-on item as it does your beach bag, shopping tote, or commuter carry-all. The spacious, spill-proof bag holds multiple days’ worth of clothing and shoes, and unlike many canvas totes, it even features a handful of interior and exterior pockets to keep smaller essentials organized. We love the vegan leather detailing and the striped handles (which are available in four bright colorways), and you can even choose to add a shoulder strap for an additional fee.

“Paravel makes some of the best totes out there — they are super roomy, with a handy exterior pocket for stashing last-minute essentials,” editor in chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I also love how they can be monogrammed. This limited edition bag is emblazoned with some serious words to live by.”

The Details: 17.75 x 12.25 x 7.5 inches | Canvas, vegan leather | 2.4 pounds

Tips for Buying Luggage

Choose the size and style that’s right for your travels.

Let’s be real: we all want stylish luggage. And while that cute leather tote is nice to look at, it probably isn’t the best option for camping trips or lengthy trips abroad. Similarly, lugging an oversized checked bag on a 3-day jaunt isn’t the most practical idea either. So, before your next journey, make sure you have luggage on hand that makes the most sense for that specific trip. Keep in mind it’s okay to have different bags for different scenarios — and buying a new one for your next trip is worth it if it makes travel more comfortable.

Know your organization preferences

There’s a lot of luggage out there — which is good news if you’re picky when it comes to organization. If you like a dedicated space for all your things, look for luggage that has plenty of pockets and compartments (our editors are big fans of bags with special slots for shoes or wet/dirty clothing). If you prefer to neatly fold everything into one big, open compartment, opt for something without all the zippers and dividers.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this article, T+L associate editor Hillary Maglin worked with her colleagues to round up the very best pieces of luggage we’ve actually used in the past year, and plan on continuing to use for years to come.

Louis Vuitton

The iconic French fashion brand has become synonymous with luxury travel. Louis Vuitton’s heritage as a trunk maker preceded the modern-day brand and this expertise in creating high-quality luggage is a linchpin in the brand’s contemporary strategy. In 1837 and at 16 years old, Louis Vuitton arrived in Paris to be the apprentice to Monsieur Maréchal and he quickly became an expert craftsman at the atelier designing specialized boxes and later trunks according to wealthy customer’s wishes. Horse-drawn carriages, boats and trains required specialized, high quality and durable luggage. After 17 years at the atelier, Vuitton opened his own workshop near Place Vendome. After rapid expansion, the renowned atelier in Asnières was opened and remains the base for the 170 Louis Vuitton leather craftsmen today. Louis Vuitton has also been instrumental in revolutionising the luggage industry too – in 1886 Georges Vuitton created the ingenious closing system that ensured locks on travel trunks were unable to picked open. Travel continues to be an important feature at the heart of the house and the trunk remains the symbol of the house. Louis Vuitton is often the luggage of choice for many contemporary celebrities who recognise the design house’s iconic heritage and quality

A popular choice amongst the Asian markets, MCM has become a modern classic. The loco itself pays tribute to King Ludwig I’s love of everything neo-classical in addition to representing the Greek symbol for victory, whilst the diamonds symbolize strength, durability and of course beauty – features the MCM products aim to live up to. Every MCM piece is personalized with a unique number engraved on a brass plate, both as a reminder of the craftsmanship put into creating the piece, but also a handy way of spotting a fake! Whilst MCM’s methods of production are steeped in the history and tradition of great German manufacturing and engineering, the brand is constantly re-inventing their styles and keeping their finger on the ever-changing fashion pulse.  One common feature of all their luggage products, only the finest fabrics, leather and finishings are used to ensure MCM products will last a lifetime.
