Indonesia Tours & Holidays
If you thought Indonesia was all big resorts and Bintang, it might be time to check your atlas.
Because there isn’t really just one Indonesia ... not when you’re an archipelago made up of 17,000 individual islands (only 8,000 of which have ever seen a human footprint). One minute you’re spotting orangutans in the jungles of Sumatra, the next you’re chowing down on an organic acai bowl in Ubud. You could be hiking the slopes of Mt Batur or kicking back on the sugar-white beaches of Gili Air (preferably holding a delicious tropical cocktail). Whether you’re looking for party, peace or paradise, the odds are good we’ve got an Indonesia tour that fits the bill.

Best time to visit indonesia.
Indonesia’s close proximity to the equator ensures consistently hot and humid weather in all seasons; however, its tropical climate means many areas are prone to periods of heavy rainfall. The wet season normally takes place from October to April and flooding can make the roads difficult to travel at times.
Popular holiday spots like Bali tend to receive large crowds during Christmas and school holidays but are significantly less crowded in shoulder seasons. Also worth keeping in mind are Indonesia’s various religious holidays. With a large population of practising Muslims, Ramadan results in the closure of many services, so expect a quieter experience when travelling during Ramadan.

Geography and environment
An archipelago of over 17,000 islands, Indonesia works its way across several oceans, beginning with the island of Sumatra in the West and stretching to Irian Jaya in the East. In between, Indonesia includes a sizeable part of Borneo, as well as larger islands such as Java, Bali and Sulawesi. With such a broad selection of islands, Indonesia encompasses a variety of landscapes such as: thick tropical jungle, fertile rice fields, grasslands and volcanic mountain ranges. Indonesia’s ecosystems are full of a rich variety of flora and fauna including the very rare Sumatran tiger and elephant, the Javan rhino and the fierce Komodo Dragon. Indonesia is also famous for its incredible beaches and marine life. With thousands of kilometres of reefs, beaches, bays and lagoons, Indonesia is a diver's paradise.
Top 10 creatures of Indonesia
1. sumatran rhino.
Appearing almost prehistoric, the Sumatran rhino is smaller in both size and number than its African cousins. Covered in a reddish brown fur, the Sumatran rhino is a solitary animal, and has been quietly grazing the grasslands for thousands of years.
2. Sulawesi Giant Squirrel
Living deep within Sulawesi’s rainforest canopies, this enigmatic and shy rodent can be tough to spot, so stay quiet and alert if you want catch a glimpse of one.
3. Sun Bear
A perennial favourite, the sun bear can be found on many of Indonesia’s islands. Perhaps suffering from ‘small bear syndrome’, these fiery characters are often quite aggressive, defying their nickname as the ‘Honey Bear’.
4. Sulawesi Macaque
Native to the island of Sulawesi, these crafty primates are known for being exceptionally social creatures. With family groups usually led by dominant females, Sulawesi macaques are a prime example of 'girl power' in action.
5. Sumatran Tiger
A noble predator with an almost mythical status, the Sumatran tiger stalks its prey deep within the jungles of Sumatra. With some estimates putting their numbers at just over 300, an international effort is underway to protect this incredible animal.
6. Javan Slow Loris
Slow in name, slow in nature. Don’t be fooled though, this super-cute creature packs a deadly punch – it is the world's only poisonous primate!
7. Long-Beaked Echidna
Inhabiting the island of New Guinea, this crazy critter snuffles about the forest floor using its large snout. Don’t expect to see many of these guys though; they are classified as ‘critically endangered’.
8. Komodo Dragon
The fearsome Komodo Dragon is the world’s largest lizard, often weighing up to 70 kilograms. Described as the ‘perfect predator’, this stealthy beast makes for an exhilarating sight.
9. Moluccan Flying Snake
Scared of snakes? Now you'll have to search the ground and the air as these aerodynamic reptiles have found a novel way to move between the treetops, by becoming airborne and gliding for up to 30 metres.
10. Babirusa
What do you get when you cross a pig and a deer? The odd looking Babirusa: a short and stocky animal with large, curled horns. Native to Indonesia, populations of these bizarre beasts are sadly in decline due to poaching and habitat loss.

Local culture.
The culture of Indonesia is diverse and varied across the approximately 6,000 inhabited islands. There are over 300 different languages spoken across the islands, however most people can speak Bahasa Indonesian. Despite the diversity, Indonesian tends to have a strong cultural bond, with the national slogan meaning Unity in Diversity. Religion is a big contributor to cultural identity in Indonesia, with everyone needing to have an official religion, which will be listed on their national identification card. Generally speaking, you can only marry people of the same religion as you. The majority of the population are Muslim and, but Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism are also practised.
Food and drink
Here are some of the most popular foods and drinks you should try in Indonesia.
Satay is delicious skewered meat (often chicken), which is cooked over hot coals, covered in a spicy peanut sauce. Vegetarians can also try this sauce on rice cakes called ketupat. Satay is a great meal to eat on the run or equally good as part of a feast in a restaurant.
Beef rendang
Similar to a beef curry (although with less sauce and a richer flavour), Beef Rendang is a spicy dish that is traditionally served at special festive events like weddings. However, travellers will be able to sample this dish all over Indonesia.
Nasi Goreng
Indonesian fried rice known as Nasi Goreng is Indonesia’s national dish for good reason. This famous meal is eaten all over the world in many different formats, but what makes Indonesia’s rendition particularly special is the darkness of the rice, thanks to the use of thick, sweet soy sauce known as kecap manis.
These steamed fish dumplings served in peanut sauce are Indonesia’s answer to dim sum. The cone shaped packages can be made with a variety of fish including tuna, mackerel and even prawn. They’re a popular street food and can be found at many streetside stalls and restaurants.
Nasi uduk translates to mixed rice, and is a dish of rice cooked in coconut milk mixed with various herbs and spices. It is normally served with some sort of meat dish or curry.
Tea and coffee
Tea and coffee are the most common and popular beverages in Indonesia. They are often served sweeter than you may be used to drinking at home.
For most travellers, shopping in Indonesia will be very affordable, with opportunities to purchase authentic arts and crafts, including traditional batik clothing, woodcarvings, pottery and other unusual items. On bigger islands like Bali and Java, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping opportunities. Tourist centres can be worthwhile if you are looking to buy handcrafted items like puppets, leatherworks and batik. Otherwise, explore local markets for clothing, shoes, antiques and other items.
At most markets, bargaining is encouraged. If you want more information about haggling in Asia, check out this blog .
Festivals and events
There are many different religious and cultural celebrations in Indonesia, but some of the key public holidays include:
- Galungan dan Kuningan: celebrating the victory of light over darkness, when ancestors visit their relatives on earth.
- Kartini Day: the birthday of national heroine, Raden Ayu Kartini, who fought for women’s education rights.
- National Awakening Day: celebrates the coming together of people from the 17,000 islands of Indonesia as a national identity.
- National Batik Day: celebrates the traditional batik clothing and is commemorated in October on the day when UNESCO first acknowledged batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2009.
Top islands to visit in Indonesia
Bali might be known for its Instagrammable smoothies and rice paddies, but there is so much more to this island paradise than meets the eye. The mountain areas are second to none, the waterfalls are stunning and the beaches are iconic. Ubud is a yogi paradise, while a sunrise climb to Mt. Batur is perfect for hikers looking for a challenge.
Whether you're looking to hike and cycle or relax on the beach and in hot springs, we've got a Bali tour that'll tick all the boxes.
Learn about the unique Sasak culture on Lombok from the food, arts and crafts and farming. The secluded beaches are less visited than their Balinese neighbour, but no less beautiful. If your visit is over a weekend, you may also be able to witness a traditional wedding to experience the local customs, dress and feasting.
Explore both of these neighbouring islands on our 15 day Bali & Lombok Adventure.
Komodo + Flores
There is only one place on earth to see the legendary Komodo Dragons in the wild, and that is Komodo National Park. Two of the more notable islands that make up the park are Komodo and Flores, both of which are great places to catch a glimpse of these famous reptiles.
Located in the Indonesian section of Borneo, exploring the jungle is an experience you’ll never forget. Keep an eye out for orangutans, meet with friendly locals and learn about how they work to conserve the wildlife in this largely untouched slice of paradise.

Is Indonesia accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Indonesia can be a difficult destination for travellers with disabilities because pavements are uneven and steps are frequent, paving is poorly maintained and footpaths are usually obstructed with parked vehicles, street stalls and debris. Accessible public toilets are rare other than in big modern shopping malls. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available only through specialist tour operators, but cars and drivers can be hired readily and are good value. Local guides are easy to find in tourist areas. Bali has a wider range of tourism services and more developed facilities, including some accessible accommodation options. Some sights such as Borobudur and Prambanan in Yogyakarta are partially wheelchair accessible. Visitors generally find that Indonesians are very welcoming and willing to help those with access needs. The Asian Para Games took place in Jakarta in 2018 and have helped raise the profile of people with disabilities in the country as well as give new direction for making facilities more accessible in the capital.
Is Indonesia safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travellers are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s important for our travellers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people. We recommend you visit Equaldex and/or Smartraveller before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+ related laws.
Homosexuality is not currently illegal in Indonesia, other than in Aceh province (which is governed by Islamic law), however the LGBTQIA+ community has routinely been targeted and harassed by police.
Revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code that would allow prison sentences of up to five years for sex between unmarried people are being considered by parliament. These changes would criminalise same-sex relationships and advocacy groups are fearing a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. A predominantly Muslim country, Islamic organisations have increasingly been pressuring the government on moral issues and in the past few years politicians and public figures have frequently been using anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric as a means to win votes.
Gay dating apps and media portraying LGBTQIA+ behaviour as “normal” have been banned. Same-sex marriage, civil partnerships, and adoption are all illegal, and the lack of anti-discrimination laws means that attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in Indonesia regularly go unpunished.
There are few gay-friendly venues outside of Bali. Because sex in general is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while travelling here. The majority of the country is safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behaviour. Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travellers sharing a bed, however at budget or family-run businesses if you are allocated separate beds you might feel more comfortable not to draw attention to your relationship.

Does my trip to Indonesia support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Indonesia directly support our foundation partner, Coral Triangle Center Foundation.
Coral Triangle Center Foundation
The Coral Triangle Center is on a mission to restore coastal and marine ecosystems in Indonesia through training and education. Over the last several years, coral reefs along the northern coast of Nusa Penida have suffered from widespread mortality due to irresponsible marine tourism, disease, coral bleaching, tropical storms and water pollution. Donations from our trips help their coral restoration project in Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area and support their educational outreach activities for local schools in Nusa Penida.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

More information about Indonesia
An archipelago filled with elaborate temples, diverse islands, jungles and paradise beaches, Indonesia is a dream travel destination for lovers of all things exotic. A package holiday to Indonesia has space for everything, from the densely populated island of Java to isolated rocks which are home to some rather alarming-looking animals, like the Komodo Dragon.
This Southeast Asian nation is composed of more than 17,000 volcanic islands, located between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans , making it the largest island country in the world. Sharing land borders with Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and East Timor, Indonesia is home to a staggering 261 million inhabitants and is the 4th most populous country in the world.
The large island of Java is the busiest island, home to around half of the entire population and the capital city of Jakarta , the centre of politics and economy in Indonesia . The national motto ‘ Unity in Diversity’ acknowledges the diversity of the country’s inhabitants, which are composed of hundreds of distinct ethnic groups, as well as the amazing variety of islands, environments and cultures.
Indonesia also has a strong Muslim tradition as followers of Islam make up the majority of the population. The opportunity to island hop and encounter many different experiences in one trip is one of the main attractions of a multi-centre holiday to Indonesia.
The country’s major islands include Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Lesser Sunda Islands , which include the idyllic islands of Bali, Lombok and Flores. The paradise beaches, sacred temples and lush rainforests of the islands in this group are often the images that spring to mind when envisioning Indonesia , but this exceptional biodiversity and natural beauty can be found throughout the archipelago from tiny uninhabited islands to the larger land masses as well.
History of Indonesia
On a tour of Indonesia, you will discover the influences of the nations diverse history on its monuments, sights and traditions. Most written histories of the island nation of Indonesia begin with the kingdom of Srivajay in the 7th century , which was a powerful empire based on the island of Sumatra . The kingdom acted as an important centre for the spread of Buddhism and was known for its impressive maritime technology.
Over the following centuries other kingdoms, such as the Shailendra and Mataram, thrived and declined on the island of Java , leaving behind their heritage in exceptional monuments and religious buildings such as the Borobudur in central Java and the Prambanan in Yogyakarta , both unmissable highlights to enjoy whilst on holiday in Indonesia.
In the 13th century, the kingdom of Majapahit arose as the leading power in the region, its influence spreading across much of modern-day Indonesia. The Islamic culture which the country is known for arrived around this period, brought by Muslim traders and scholars, and by the 18th century, Islam was the dominant religion on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
From 1513 onwards , Portuguese, British and Dutch traders began arriving in the region, trading with locals and eventually establishing the Dutch East India Company , who remained involved in Indonesia until World War II, when Japan occupied the archipelago.
Japanese rule encouraged a increased sense of Indonesian nationalism and independence movements, resulting in the nation's independence in 1945 , after the surrender of the Japanese . Modern-day Indonesia has endured its share of conflict and struggles both internally and with other nations, but has seen a lot of growth in recent years. Today, it is a vibrant and varied travel destination, which captivates the traveller on with its natural abundance and warm hospitality.
Nature in Indonesia
The sheer size, tropical climate and island geography of Indonesia make it one of the most biodiverse countries on earth, with a combination of both Asian and Australasian wildlife and fauna species.
Islands such as Bali, Sumatra, Java and Borneo, were once part of the Asian mainland, and have retained the rich wildlife of the continent, examples of which include the Sumatran tiger , the famous orangutans of Borneo, leopards and Asian elephants.
Many visitors on a trip to Indonesia are attracted by the prospect of meeting orangutans in the jungle or watching elephants play in the Kinabatangan River on the island of Borneo.
Dense forest covers around 70% of the country, although some of the larger islands have suffered a significant amount of deforestation. On the nation' smallest islands, the geographical isolation has encouraged the development of extremely unique biodiversity, with a large number of endemic plant and animal species. These range from the Corpse Lily, the world’s largest flower, to Komodo dragons and the magical Greater bird-of-paradise. In fact, Indonesia ranks 2nd in the world after Australia for its number of endemic species.
It’s 80,000 kilometres of coastline are a beach-lovers dream, surrounded by tropical seas with abundant marine life such as manta rays and sea turtles. The Gili Islands are considered to be ‘ turtle heaven’ , due to their large populations of turtle species including green sea turtles , leatherbacks and hawksbill.
A package holiday to Indonesia is incomplete without taking some time to snorkel in the warm waters of the country’s tropical coastline. There are a number of must-see natural attraction in Indonesia , but the most popular include visiting the fearsome Komodo Dragons on the aptly named Komodo Island, a tiny island situated off the coast of Flores , diving or snorkelling around the Raja Ampat islands to discover an underwater world of multi-coloured coral and sea-life, meeting the endangered orangutans of Borneo and venturing out on a night safari in the Kerinci National Park in Sumatra to spot majestic Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants.
Culture in Indonesia
With at least 300 ethnic groups, there is no single dominant or homogenous culture in Indonesia ; instead, there exists a pleasant mix of traditions and cultural sights across the different regions, islands and communities. One thing that almost all Indonesian’s have in common is that religion is at the heart of their everyday lives. Wherever you travel in Indonesia, you will notice that religion is at the heart of the country, from Hindu devotees making morning offerings in Bali to Muslims attending Friday prayers in the enormous Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. The government recognises six official religions, although the most dominant is Islam , so you can expect to see the influence of this on the country's culture.
Another facet of Indonesian culture is the prevalence of traditional performing arts; watching a colourful Barong dance show is an unmissable experience to enjoy on holiday in Bali , whilst the superstitious and visually striking Reog dance is not to be missed during a visit to East Java.
There are more than 3,000 original Indonesian dances, each presenting a dynamic living tradition. Indonesia also has a strong arts and craft tradition, with a variety of artisans creating unique cultural objects throughout the country. In Bali, there has been a long tradition of artistry, with an expectation on individuals to take up their preferred art skill from a young age. Despite the complex melting pot of cultures, traditions and arts in the country, one thing is for sure: a trip to Indonesia will inspire your imagination and creativity like no other destination, hence it has attracts artists from all over the world.
From the bustling streets of Jakarta to the delicate sandy beaches of Gilli and the lush rainforests of Ubud in Bali, the island nation of Indonesia presents the traveller with an abundance of experiences. Island-hopping around the archipelago, you will be amazed by the natural abundance, rich history and open-minded culture.
A holiday to Indonesia suits all tastes. One day you might be tracking tigers in the jungle and the next, watching the sunset on a paradisiacal beach, such is the diversity of Indonesia .

Jodi at Go Indonesia Tours set out the perfect and flawless Indonesia vacation for our group. Not only she allowed me to change the itinerary at least 5 times (up to 3 weeks before departure) but her quoted price was also extremely competitive as it included daily cars/drivers and guides when required to escort me to different tourist attractions. For 9 days of our Indonesia tour, we followed the tour without a single hitch. Staff, tour guides, hotels, and drivers were positive, punctual, charming, and friendly. An endearing, charismatic adventure surrounded by beautiful people. Flights, restaurants, and hotels were confirmed for us before we go. All of us were extremely impressed with all facets of this tour company's quality of service.

This slow-paced island nation is an exotic blend of rich cultures and dramatic natural beauty.
Smouldering vistas, rich cultural diversity, beach-blessed coastlines and languorous charm – this nation of more than 17,000 islands offers countless adventures and unforgettable experiences. Every island here seduces with its own vision of paradise. From the beautiful beaches and emerald interior of Bali – the fabled ‘Island of the Gods’ – and the stunning volcanic landscapes of Lombok, to the exotic shorelines of Komodo – the land of dragons, this picture-perfect archipelago really does have it all.
Our most popular island in Indonesia is Bali, where stunning natural beauty, spirituality and a rich cultural heritage abound. The southern coast of the island is one of the most popular spots, peppered with sun-drenched beaches, gourmet eateries and luxe beachside resorts. Head inland towards the central region of Bali and you’ll discover dramatic volcanoes, rolling rice terraces and the artsy hub of Ubud – the cultural heart of the island. Alternatively, you could stay on the more sedate island of Lombok, often described as the quieter and more unspoilt Bali. Off the north-west coast of Lombok, the three tiny Gili islands each entice with their own distinct personalities.
Whether you’re looking for an unspoilt beach escape or a dramatic volcano trek, talk to us and we’ll help design your ultimate Indonesia holiday.

SeaTrek with Whale Sharks, Corals & Dragons
Set off on an unforgettable voyage with SeaTrek Sailing Adventures packed with wildlife encounters, cultural interactions, Ring of Fire-carved landscapes and plenty of me time on and under the ocean waves. This roundtrip onboard a handcrafted pinisi ship begins and ends in Komodo National Park, the UNESCO-listed refuge of the Komodo Dragon, and skirts the Nusa Tenggara Islands in search of whale sharks, manta rays and deserted beaches.
Bali Twin Centre
Bali is Indonesia's 'Island of the Gods' and it's aptly named - this is a land of stunning natural beauty and friendly people who are proud of their ancient traditions and spirituality. You'll find the beach resorts that Bali is best known for on its southern shores, but there's so much more to Bali than its coastline. Venture inland, amid the lush rice terraces and dramatic valleys and you can cycle through rice terraces, go temple-hopping and take time out at wellbeing retreats. To really make the most of your stay on the island, we recommend at least 10 days and combining two or three places to stay as you travel around the island. During that time relax on the beach in the south or in the north (the north tends slightly wilder in feel and a bit more off the beaten track). For the more active, an early morning trek to see the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur is not to be missed, but other things to do to give you a sense of the culture of Bali include cooking classes, exploring local temples, shopping for local crafts and sampling local spa treatments that feature at most hotels.
Singapore & Bali
This trip is one of our favourite two-stop holidays. You’ll begin in glittering Singapore, shopping on Orchard Road, taking in the views and post-sundown light show at Gardens by the Bay and sampling some of the best food in the Far East before heading for beautiful Bali for a wellbeing retreat at the all-pool villa The Elysian.
Tranquil Bali twin centre
We always recommend a twin centre holiday in Bali so that you really get to experience the very best of the island. The beautiful interior is not to be missed and a few days here amongst the rural landscapes, paddy fields and the cultural hotstpot that is Ubud is definitely a highlight. There are a few beach destinations to combine with Ubud, but here we've opted to twin with a quieter east coast resort, making this a great combination for a restorative holiday; expect more tranquility away from the crowds.
Seminyak & Ubud, Bali twin centre
We always recommend a twin centre holiday in Bali so that you really get to experience the very best of the island. The beautiful interior is not to be missed and a few days here amongst the rural landscapes, paddy fields and the cultural hotstpot that is Ubud is definitely a highlight. There are a few beach destinations to combine with Ubud, but here we've opted to twin with a west coast resort, making this a great combination for a restorative holiday; expect sleek bars, clubs, restaurants and stunning sunsets.
Ubud & Tanjong Benoa, Bali
Starting your twin centre holiday in Ubud puts you right at the heart of the cultural heart of this beautiful island. Ubud is famed for its arty vibe with a host of coffee shops and galleries showcasing the talents of local artists and craftspeople. Then onto Tanjong Benoa on Bali's southern shores to a an elegant beachside retreat.
Central Bali’s Highlights by Vintage VW Jeep
A vintage 1970s-style VW Jeep tour is one of the coolest ways to explore central Bali. Jump on board this classic icon and travel to your first stop: the 1000-year-old Batuan Temple, which is a village and ancestral temple that’s cared for by the residents of Batuan. Your driver will then continue through local villages to artsy Ubud – the cultural heart of Bali and a hub of traditional crafts and dance. Highlights here include impressive Puri Saren Agung Palace, the arts market and famous monkey forest, where playful brown macaques dart around the ancient trees and ornate statues. A scenic drive through rice fields and sleepy mountain villages then awaits to reach imposing Mount Batur. The view of the volcano, caldera and Lake Batur is breathtakingly beautiful, so make sure you’ve got your camera ready. Next up is a drive down into the crater to the lava fields, where you’ll have time to wander through the unique rock formations. Lunch-with-a-view will be served on the edge of the crater before your journey continues to the tranquil and lesser-visited temple of Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu – a beautiful water temple built on a natural spring and surrounded by lotus ponds and thick forest. The final stop will be Tegallalang, where giant steps have been carved into the landscape to create lush rice terraces.
• Departing daily from South Bali, Seminyak or Central Ubud hotels • Operates year round • Private experience
Good to know We recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper and long trousers as it can get cool in the mountains. A sarong will be provided to allow you to cover up for temple visits.
Mount Batur Sunrise Trek
Watching the sun rise from the top of Bali’s Mount Batur is an unforgettable experience. A very early start awaits as we’ll need to start the climb around 4am to make sure we reach the summit in time for sunrise. Mount Batur is a 1717-metre-high active volcano to the north west of Mount Agung. The climb will take around two hours and we’ll reach the top just as the sun rises for a magical and peaceful moment high above the island. Tuck into a well-earnt breakfast and enjoy time to soak up the panoramic views over the volcanic landscape and mountain peaks and acknowledge your achievement. You’ll then head back down to base camp, where a soothing soak in hot springs will be waiting for you. This sunrise trek would be a fantastic adventure to add on to a honeymoon or beach holiday.
• Departing Monday, Thursday and Friday from South Bali, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu and Candidasa hotels • Operates year round • Group experience
Good to know There are a number of things we recommend bringing for this trip: warm clothes, hiking shoes, long trousers, swimwear, camera and sun block. Your professional tour guide will provide a head lamp, walking sticks, gloves, hiking bag, rain coat and a small water bottle to make the climb much easier. This climb is classified as a medium level of difficulty, so a good level of fitness is required (as a guide, it’s suitable for those that enjoy hill walking).
Western Bali’s Highlights by Vintage VW Jeep
Bali’s colourful VW 181 Safari Jeeps are a classic sight around the island. They also provide a seriously cool way to explore. Jump on board for an adventure around western Bali to see some of the island’s most famous temples and stunning diverse landscapes. Your tour begins with a trip to Bali’s most popular attraction: the ancient sea temple shrine of Pura Tanah Lot, which is perched on a rock formation offshore. A morning visit will hopefully mean you’ll have a more tranquil experience. You’ll then be driven through villages and rice fields up into the mountains to the rainforested slopes of Batukaru volcano, home to impressive Pura Luhur Batukaru, which you’ll explore on a guided tour. A drive through Bali’s most spectacular rice terraces around UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jatiluwih follows, before you arrive at Bedugul, located 1200 meters above sea level. We’ll stop at Beratan Lake to visit beautiful Ulun Danu Temple, which sits in the middle of the lake, and have a buffet lunch in the tropical gardens. On our route back, we’ll head to a colourful local market so you can experience the buzz of local life and then look around a traditional Balinese family compound, which has a distinctive design, for an insightful end to the day.
• Departing daily from South Bali, Seminyak and Central Ubud hotels • Operates year round • Private experience
Good to know We recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper and long trousers as it can get cool in the mountains.
Gili Islands in a Day
If you’re short on time but can’t bear to miss out on Indonesia’s most idyllic tiny islands, this stunning day trip will give you a taster of what Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are all about. Your first glimpse of these car-free islands, ringed with white sands and dotted with coconut palms, will be from the Malimbu Hill viewpoint on Lombok. You’ll then cross the sea by outrigger boat (be prepared to embrace your adventurous side and get a little wet!) to Gili Air. Here, you’ll have the choice to spend the day on a beautiful beach to swim, snorkel and sunbathe. Or, you can jump back on the outrigger to visit the two other Gilis: Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Gili Trawangan – nicknamed ‘Gili T’ – is the most popular of the three islands, but it’s still super low-key, with most of the activity centred around diving. Rustic Gili Meno is the most secluded island, perfect for lazing on coral sands and snorkelling with turtles. As each island has its own character and landscape, this is the perfect island-hopping day.
• Departing daily from Senggigi • Operates year round • Private experience
Lombok Beach Hopping
Head out on a laid-back day to play castaway on Lombok’s most unique beaches: a pink-sand beach and a secret island that only appears at low tide. Your day will begin with a visit to Indonesia’s second largest fish market. At Tanjung Luar – where most of the traders are women – you’ll buy fresh fish ready for your barbecue lunch. We’ll then hop on a boat to Sand Island: a tiny white-sand speck which, at hide tide, is completely submerged apart from its Indonesian marker flag. The next boat stop will be Maringkek, where you can step ashore and wander around the fishing village, before we continue to Pink Beach, which gets its name from the pink-hued sand. The nearby islands of Pantai Semangkuk and Gili Petelu offer the chance for snorkelling, while later in the afternoon, there’s time to relax on peaceful white sands at Pantai Sebui before your beach barbecue lunch and return boat trip.
Lombok Rice Terrace Trek
There’s no better way to get back to nature on Lombok than by donning your trainers and heading for the rice terraces. You’ll begin by getting a taste of local life with a visit to a traditional market in Narmada, before driving on to Sedau for the start of your two-hour soft trek through the beautiful rice terraces. This is a leisurely trek and along the way your guide will tell you about the different tropical plants that you spot. At the end of the hike, a rest and lunch-with-a-view awaits in Suranadi. You’ll also visit Gunung Sari to explore the temple of Pura Agung Gunung Sari, which makes an impression with its three pagoda-like places of worship. Heading north, we’ll cross the Pusuk Pass where you’ll see cheeky monkeys wandering around and causing mischief. The last stop is Malimbu to take in some of Lombok's best sandy beaches.

Where is Indonesia? Indonesia is the largest country in the world to be made up entirely of islands – 17,000 in total. The archipelago sits in the southern hemisphere of Southeast Asia and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Java and Borneo are two of the largest islands, and, east of Java, Bali and Lombok – much smaller – make up part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Just off Lombok’s coast, are the three tiny Gili Islands, fringed by white sands and coconut palms.
Bali Our most popular destination in Indonesia is Bali, a tropical island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands. For its small size, Bali offers more than its fair share of attractions – from visits to temples and quaint local villages, to cycling around rice terraces and lounging on picture-perfect golden sands.
Idyllic islands With their dazzling white sands and emerald interiors, Lombok and the Gili Islands offer a more sedate atmosphere to popular Bali. Lombok lies to the east and is perfect if you’re looking for untouched beaches and excellent outdoor activities – the southern coastline is a surfer’s paradise, while the dominating Mount Rinjani is a magnet for walkers. Off the north-west coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands are exotic hideaways of white sands and bohemian-chic charm. Gili Trawangan is the most cosmopolitan, with great nightlife and luxury beachside resorts, while Gili Air is the most authentic of the islands, with a stunning coral reef and great local character. The smallest island is Gili Meno, the ultimate honeymoon haven with its gorgeous cluster of palm-fringed
Multi-centres To make the most of a Bali holiday, we recommend twinning a relaxing beach stay with a few nights in artsy Ubud, the cultural capital of the island. Pairing Bali with Lombok and the Gilis also makes for an excellent island-hopping beach holiday. Local airlines have several flights each day between Bali and Lombok, and it’s also easy to travel between the islands by boat. To get to the secluded Gilis you’ll need to hop on a boat from Bali or Lombok.
Diving & snorkelling Indonesia’s warm waters lie within the Coral Triangle, one of the richest underwater bio-diversities on the planet. There’s exceptional coral and reef fish diversity that range from clownfish and mola mola to reef sharks and manta rays. Bali, Lombok and the Gilis are some of the best islands in Indonesia to go snorkelling and diving. Off the north-west coast of Bali, Menjangan Island is famed for its dramatic underwater caverns and stunning corals, while the shallow reefs around Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno are great for snorkelling with sea turtles and colourful reef fish.
Food & drink Reflecting the contrasting cultures and landscapes within the archipelago, Indonesian cuisine can be quite varied and diverse. Many regions enjoy different specialities, and you might also notice hints of Chinese, Indian and European influences in the local food, depending on where you are. Throughout Indonesia, one thing you’ll find everywhere is rice, a staple to most traditional meals. You’ll also enjoy lots of tropical fruits and vegetables in the Indonesian diet, thanks to the islands’ rich, fertile soils and warm, humid climates. On a visit to Indonesia, popular local dishes to try include Nasi Goreng, a flavoursome fried rice dish, and Gado Gado, a tasty Indonesian-style salad.

Why should you holiday in Indonesia?
Indonesia consists of 18,000 islands spread across an area from the Asian mainland to Australia. Not only does this mean great geographical differences but large historical and cultural differences, too, making Indonesia an exciting travel destination.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific “ring of fire”, which is the term applied to the chain of volcanoes around the Pacific coasts.
Travel to Indonesia and experience soaring volcanoes, amazing temples, wonderful tropical beaches with some of the world’s best coral reefs, exciting wildlife and a diversity without equal.
You could spend months travelling in Indonesia, but at the heart of the island nation are four of Indonesia’s most exciting islands. Each island has a character of its own, and even after a short trip from island to island, it feels like arriving in a whole new country.
Our holidays in Indonesia
Our tours to Indonesia are each based on one or more of the most exciting islands, such as Bali, Java or Sumatra.
Read more about the experiences that await you on a holiday on the different islands below.
Bali, or the Island of the Gods, is one of Indonesia’s undisputed highlights. The little island offers majestic scenery, beautiful Hindu temples and white bounty beaches, which are perfect for the beach holiday of your life.
We offer several different tours to Bali , including in combination with Java. Selected tours can be rounded off with a tour to Komodo Islands or the Gili Islands.
Some amazing highlights await you in Bali:
- Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali and a must-see on your tour. Ubud is scenically located between lush mountains and emerald green rice terraces. Explore the town by bicycle or visit some of the surrounding crafts villages.
- There’s no escaping the beautiful Hindu temples on your tour, which exist in their thousands. Visit, for example, the Besakih Temple , Bali’s most important and most sacred temple, or Tanah Lot , which is beautifully located by the sea and is one of Bali’s most important landmarks.
- Bali’s beaches are quite outstanding. Round off your holiday with a beach holiday in Sanur , which, with its miles of white sandy beaches is one of Bali’s most popular seaside resorts.
Java is one of the world’s most densely populated islands, but you have no perception of this outside the towns and cities. Java is located on the Indonesian “ring of fire”, and wherever you are, you will enjoy a fascinating landscape with scenic rice fields and conical volcanoes in the background.
On a tour to Java , you can, for example, experience:
- Java’s soul in Yogyakarta . The city offers several palaces, including the Sultan’s Palace Kraton Yogyakarta, colourful markets and proud traditions of batik and other Javanese handicrafts.
- Visit the magnificent, UNESCO-protected Borobudur Temple north-west of Yogyakarta. Borobudur dates back to the 8th or 9th century and is one of the world’s largest Buddhist monuments.
- Don’t miss Java’s beautiful volcanoes. Experience the sunrise on the Mount Bromo volcano and trek to the top of the smaller Mount Ijen volcano , where you can experience the beautiful turquoise crater lake at an altitude of around 2,300 metres.
Sumatra is Indonesia’s largest island, offering real adventure in the form of unique scenery with tropical rainforests, rivers and lush volcanic landscapes.
On a tour to Sumatra , you can, for example, experience:
- The Gunung Leuser National Park is one of Sumatra’s main attractions. The national park is known for its dense rainforest, which is home to one of the last orangutan populations on Sumatra. See the beautiful animals in their natural habitat in the park.
- Discover Sipiso-piso, one of Indonesia’s highest waterfalls , at 120 metres high, and the world’s largest crater lake, Toba . By Lake Toba, you will also find the beautiful, boat-shaped long houses in the local villages.
- Meeting local tribespeople . In the Batak Karo villages, you can experience traditional longhouses, where up to 12 families may be living at once. The tribe is particularly famous for their iconic, boat-shaped roofs.

Best time to go
Indonesia is a fantastic year round destination but the busy seasons are the summer months (Jul-Aug) and Christmas holidays. The temperature is consistent year round but slightly higher during the dry season which is April to September, January to March is the rainy season with high temperatures and tropical showers
Taste the flavours of each island: Discover Indonesia
Everyone has, at some stage, dreamt of escaping to the tropical jungles, serene yoga retreats and surf-ready sparkling oceans of Indonesia. And with good reason – Indonesia holidays are truly some of the most paradisiacal on the planet.
From rolling rice paddy hills to bustling cities, white sandy beaches to religious temples, Indonesia holidays have so much more on offer than you could ever have dreamed. If you’re not sure where to start (and we can’t blame you — Indonesia is made up of over 17 and a half thousand islands and islets), here’s our picks for islands to visit and things to see and do:
The best beaches
There’s no talking holidays in Indonesia without beaches, and pretty much every one is a mountain-framed showstopper. That said, there’s certainly some highlights
- Gili Islands: whichever of the Gilis you go to, the beaches are seriously incredible. Gili Meno might just win out for idyllic beaches, though.
- Mainland Lombok: the small coastal town of Kuta at the southernmost tip of Lombok is a surfer’s dream, but it’s also a little slice of heaven for anyone who needs some R&R. Selong Blanak Beach in Kuta is a great place for surfing beginners, but it’s also got the white sands and turquoise water that dreams are made of. Nowhere quite beats Seger Beach (also in Kuta), and especially not at sunset. Pull up a bamboo seat and enjoy the spectacular show.
- Bali : our Indonesia resorts in Seminyak offer some of the best, exclusive beaches the town has to offer, and we offer Indonesia holiday packages along the pristine coast of Nusa Dua , too.
- Flores: Kanawa Beach is not only beautiful, but offers some of the best snorkelling in Indonesia, with sea turtles and reef sharks commonly spotted.
- East Nusa Tenggara: two words: Pink Beach. Found in Komodo National Park, the sands here are an incredible pink colour, and the water crystal clear. For a unique beach, unlike anything else you’ll see in Indonesia, Pink Beach is definitely worth the trip.
Nature, adventure and wildlife
Surfing is a must in Indonesia, of course. In Bali, head to Uluwatu for some of the best waves on the island, no matter your experience. In Kuta, Lombok, head to any one of the surf shops in town and chat to the locals about surf lessons or boat excursions to find the best waves. Bobby’s Bar and Surf, belonging to the tourist-nicknamed “King of Kuta” is your best bet – he certainly knows his way around a wave. A few minutes’ walk away you’ll find both Blondie Surf and The Beach Boys – extremely friendly locals who will welcome you into the group and show you the best surf spots (and the best bar spots, too).
In Ubud , Bali, make sure to check out Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary – buy a bunch of bananas and feed the (extremely confident) monkeys in amongst the beautiful jungle-like surroundings. Make sure not to carry anything loose like sunglasses, and especially food, ‘cause the monkeys, if cute, will steal your belongings if given half the chance.
If you fancy a “hike” that’s as easy as it is rewarding, the Campuhan Ridge Walk from Ubud is not to be missed. It will only take a couple of hours, so this is a great early morning activity for some stunning rice paddy views before brunch.
Be sure to hike Mount Batur if you get the chance – you’ll be picked up at around 2am, given “breakfast” and then handed a head torch to follow your guide with. It’s a very doable hike, and you’ll reach the summit just in time to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises of your life. Bonus: you get to refuel on eggs cooked in the volcanic spring.
Fancy more of a challenge? Get yourself over to northern Lombok to take on a three-day hike up to the summit of Mount Rinjani, where you’ll get panoramic views like you’ve never seen, and some seriously refreshing dips in volcanic lakes and hot springs. There’s truly nothing quite like it.
Culture and serenity
Holidays to Indonesia aren’t just about beaches and wildlife: the culture is fascinating and diverse, and you’d be hard-pressed to avoid the zen during your stay, too.
To learn about traditional Balinese craft, there’s no place better to visit than Ubud. Artists, jewellers and more have set up shop all along the main streets, and you’ll find many a gallery to wander into. Make your own silver jewellery at Studio Perak on Jalan Hanoman, and head to Penestanan Kaja, climb the Campuhan steps and wind your way through rice paddies until you find Santra Putra. It’s a guesthouse and gallery owned by artist Wayan Karja and his family – there’s no better place to buy some art to take home with you, and there’s also a yoga studio here.
Elsewhere for yoga, you’ve got the well-known places like The Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive in Ubud (both of which live up to their reputation). But for something a little quieter, try Intuitive Flow, with its breathtaking views across the rice paddies of Penestanan.
If temples are your thing, you’re in luck — in Bali, Lombok and Java, you’ll never be more than a stone’s throw from a beautiful temple to wander around. If you want to see something truly spectacular, it’s worth making the journey to the cliff-top temple in Uluwatu, Pura Luhur. In Java, marvel at the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, Prambanan, which dates back to the mid-9th-century.
Food and drink
If you’re looking for the best place for food in Bali, it’s got to be Ubud. Try brunch and a fresh coconut at Atman Kafe, and the delicious mixed-cuisine fare at Kafe, both on Jalan Hanoman. Want to sample some Balinese delicacies? Babi guling (suckling pig) is best tasted at Warung Ibu Oka, behind Ubud Palace, and Tutmak on Jalan Dewi Sita does some of the best nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles) and nasi campur (mixed rice with side dishes) in town. For green (or orange or red or purple) juice, nowhere is better than Juice Ja Cafe on Jalan Dewi Sita.
While in the capital, definitely check out Namaaz Dining – it’s the first molecular gastronomy restaurant in Indonesia, and th 17-course sampler is one of those meals you’ll find yourself thinking about years later.
Strangely, Lombok is big on stone-baked and wood-fired pizzas that easily rival those you’ll get at home. Bobby’s Surf Bar on Jalan Pariwisata Pantai does some of the best pizza in Kuta, while Gili Meno’s most delicious pizza offering comes courtesy of Mallias Restaurant on the Eastern side of the island.
Events and festivals
Year round, holidays to Indonesia are bound to involve experiencing some kind of festival, event or celebration. The highlights?
- Galungan – if you’re visiting Bali, you might be around for Galungan, the Balinese holiday that celebrates the victory of dharma over adharma. The date varies as the Balinese year is 210 days long, but you may be lucky enough to catch some of the celebrations. Parades fill the streets, lined with penjors (bamboo poles decorated with coconut leaves) and offerings – it’s a beautiful celebration that goes on for days.
- Indonesian Independence Day – celebrated on 17th August every year, and the whole country comes alive with colourful decorations and parades, traditional dress and music.
- Music lovers – every May, Jakarta holds a three-day jazz festival–one of the biggest in Asia–with some of the most popular jazz musicians in the world gracing the stage.

Indonesia Holiday
Whether you’re pampering yourself on the beaches of Bali, navigating the buzzing capital city of Jakarta or trekking through the thick jungles of Sumatra, a trip to Indonesia is sure to be unforgettable.
Indonesia Hotel + Flights
In Indonesia, there are 37,763 hotels starting at £82 a night. If you’re looking to save money, bundle your hotel and flights — there are some terrific deals available with our Indonesia Holiday Packages. And it’s not just hotels and flights you can also add a range of unforgettable experiences. If you’re hoping to explore the famous Ubud rice terraces, why not add a tour of this popular attraction to your package?
Your Indonesia Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Most travellers touchdown at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Drop your bags at the hotel and get ready to do some exploring. First stop? The famous Kuta Beach. If your flight arrives late, this is the perfect place to catch a sunset.
Day 2: The bustling streets of Bali can be daunting for first-time visitors, which is why most travellers choose to rent a car with a driver. Another popular way of experiencing the highlights of this magical island is by taking a one-day whirlwind tour. Grab a window seat and be whisked around sacred temples, picturesque rice fields, local eateries and monkey-filled forests.
Day 3: Travel to Ubud, Bali’s wellness centre. Fringed by lush jungle, this hip area is the perfect place to get a massage and shop for traditional crafts.

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?
Matthewlockphotography, what do you love most about bukit lawang.
"This is an easy one to answer. Of course it's seeing orangutans in the wild, it is such a magical experience."
@matthewlockphotography's Top Tips
"Do your research and find a reliable company before booking. This makes sure some of your money will go to the conservation of the Gunung Leuser National Park."
Favourite time of year to visit Bukit Lawang
"While you can visit year-round, the best time depends on you. The dry season is May to October and the wet season is November to April. Keep in mind that during the wet season, it pours down."
Benefits of a tour guide for Bukit Lawang
"You can't enter the park without a tour guide so you have to book a tour. Keep in mind that under no circumstances should you feed any animals during your visit."

"Bali has so many beautiful waterfalls. Some require a lengthy hike, while others are in a more populated, touristy area. Whichever one you visit, it’ll be worth it!"
"The Ulun Danu temple is beautiful, but it is a small part of a larger “park.” The park does get quite crowded during lunch as there are restaurants on site. Go early!"
"Visit Tanuh Lot close to sunset. It will be crowded, but there’s ample space to relax and catch a beautiful sunset on the coast."
"Leave all loose items in the car when you visit the Secret Monkey Forest. These monkeys may be adorable, but they are feisty and can get aggressive if you bring bags in with you (they think it’s food!)."

Classic Bali & Lombok
Good combination of program and freetime. Our CEO, Hans, was just excellent. Actually the highlight of the trip was the visit at his home, walk on the close rice-field and visit the local school. The Agung caused some extra worries but at the end everything went Ok.
Jakarta to Ubud
A fantastic tour of Indonesia with a good mix of volcanoes, temples, beach and sightseeing. Well organised, lots of inclusions and fits a lot into the 2 weeks. Excellent!

Symphony of Indonesia, Private Tour
Our trip was 19 days progressing from East half of Java, Bali, Flores Island and Komodo Park. Car travel time/distances were extensive through Java (some 6-9 hours) with slow/erratic traffic. Our time in Java was rushed and too intensive. Sites were very distanced between stops. Bali was much more interesting and culturally vibrant. Tour guides not very punctual. Flores/Komodo park and 3-day boat excursion was fascinating! Sea life/coral Is one-of-a-kind and amazing! Manta Rays, dolphins; more impressive than the greatest zoo aquarium you will ever see. English communication with hosts was rough. Our 15meter boat ran aground a coral reef on the last evening and we were left stranded overnight with no propeller. Slightly concerning! Keep in mind, if you’re fair-skinned, expect to burn. Mosquitoes too. Nice trip with a good variety of activity, with rough, inconsistent planning and a few unforeseen complications. We still enjoyed.

PMGY is a very trustable company with assistance available at all times. I did two projects in Southeast Asia and had the best time. I started with the medical program in Vietnam; it was nice to experience the way of working in the hospital there, but I think this program would be better for students at the beginning of their study. There is not a lot to do and the doctors do not always have time to explain what is going on with patients or to answer your questions. After this project, I went to Bali to do the English teaching program which was the best thing I have done so far! The people were amazing, the weekend trips well organized but most importantly: the project definitely made a difference for the community. The kids were really happy to see you and they were eager to learn. I am thankful that I got to experience this!
Wanderlands Bali & Lombok - 13 Days
The tour was great and I can absolutely recommend it. We saw so many beautiful places and stayed in great accommodation. My highlight was definitely the snorkeling. Our tour guide Stacia was super friendly and helpful and made the trip very relaxed. It was simply a great trip :)
- €145 deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.
Indonesia: Hammocks & Hikes
overall a really cool trip. One thing I'd change is day trains to night trains, because we could've been doing some other stuff during those 2 days of simply sitting on our bums :P
Superb Java Bali Tours: Private Tour
Done this tour as a private tour for me and my wife. Very happy with the friendly staff. On Java island the guide is Roy and driver is Dian. On Bali, the guide is Kadek and driver is Buda. They are all very nice people and helpful. I left my tripods behind in a hotel and Kadek took all the trouble to recover it and sent to my overseas address.

Wonderful land Java and Bali
What people love about 2 week indonesia tours.
Gede was an excellent tour guide, his knowledge of all the local sights was brilliant. Things that could be improved on the tour: The accommodation was always located by really busy roads and despite earplugs the noise was disturbing and you didn't get much sleep. When you have early morning checkouts this can be fatiguing. The ferry to Lombok was not the best experience, to have to sit on the floor for 4-5 hrs was not really acceptable. I think G Adventures should charge a bit more and offer the fast boat. Maybe some of the traditional village tours could be swapped for other activities, but I appreciate people that joined for the Lombok tour hadn't seen the Bali villages. Everything else was well organised and ran smoothly.
The tour was as well organised, and run by a very capable tour leader as one has come to expect from Intrepid.

UKVI launches Super Priority Visa (SPV) service in Jakarta
Those applying for a UK visa in Jakarta, Indonesia, will have the option of paying to get a faster decision on their application.
A Super Priority Visa (SPV) is an optional, paid service that customers in select locations around the world can purchase, in addition to the visa fee, to receive a faster decision on their visa application.
This is the first time customers in Jakarta will be able to take advantage of the optional service.
Customers who choose SPV will be able to receive a decision on their UK visa application by the end of the next working day, if your appointment is on a weekday. It could take 2 working days after your appointment, if your appointment is at the weekend or on a bank holiday.
Customers should be aware that it can take longer than 2 working days, for example if the Home Office needs to ask you for more information.
The fee for the Super Priority Visa Service is currently £1,000, plus the standard fee for the type of visa being applied for.
The processing time for a Standard UK visa is 15 working days, although this excludes evenings, weekends or national, public holidays, and in some instances applications may take longer.
The very latest visa decision waiting times for each visa category are published on gov.uk . This also includes additional information about the priority services for those applying outside of the UK.
British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Dominic Jermey, said:
I am delighted the Super Priority Visa service is being launched in Jakarta. We expect this new service to be particularly useful for business, students and travellers in order to accommodate urgent requirements at very short notice. This is designed to give greater flexibility to our customers and underlines our strong commitment to make improvements to the visa services we offer for Indonesians travelling to the UK.
Additional information
You may get a refund of the priority service fee if you cancel your visa application. It depends on how you were told to prove your identity and what stage your application is at. You usually cannot get your money back when you’ve applied.

UN committee fails to reach consensus on full Palestinian membership, Security Council president says
From CNN’s Richard Roth and Michael Rios
A specialized UN committee failed to reach a consensus Thursday on Palestinian membership in the United Nations, according to the president of the UN Security Council.
Two-thirds of the committee members were in favor of moving on with membership, with many countries arguing that “Palestine fulfills all the criteria that are required” to be granted full state member status, Malta's Ambassador and Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said.
She added that no one explicitly objected to the membership qualifications.
Frazier also said she would circulate a draft report on the deliberations as soon as Friday. If the committee doesn’t agree on the report, it could hold another meeting to iron out any differences.
Asked whether the process of deliberating Palestinian membership in the committee is now over, Frazier said, “Unless the next step of agreeing (to) the report of the committee warrants another meeting to iron out the differences, it’s not foreseen that there would be any further committee action.”
But she noted that any UN Security Council member can still table a resolution to vote on Palestinian membership at any time, regardless of the committee's report.
The US and Middle East brace for a possible Iran attack that could escalate the conflict. Here's the latest
From CNN staff
Concerns about a possible Iranian attack against Israel has prompted many diplomatic conversations around the globe.
Here are some developments on diplomacy around the threat of an attack:
- Iran's statement: The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
- US and UK diplomacy: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to tell them that countries should be urging Iran not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East after threats made by Tehran against Israel, according to a State Department spokesperson. The top US general for the Middle East is also in Israel . Additionally, Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict .
- Israel receives US support: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US officials expressed the country's support for Israel against Iranian threats. Gallant warned that such an attack could lead to a regional escalation.
- Travel restrictions: The US State Department restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran. “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted. US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.
Meanwhile, here's some other updates:
- Hamas on hostages: A member of Hamas' political bureau said a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations. "Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza, Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose."
- Updates on aid to Gaza: It is clear that Israel is working to ramp up humanitarian aid to Gaza, but it has not yet implemented all of the measures it has announced, a top United Nations humanitarian official said. Aid coming in trucks from Israel has to be "segregated from water, from food, from medical items" before it goes into Gaza, said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem. “Getting 400 trucks from Kerem Shalom doesn't mean 400 trucks go into Gaza,” he said, adding that the logistical complications are numerous, and take time to resolve. He also said Israel’s restrictions on movement inside the strip complicate matters.
Anera charity resumes work in Gaza after pausing when Israeli strike killed 7 World Central Kitchen staff
From CNN's Tala Alrajjal and Mohammed Tawfeeq
American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) has resumed Gaza operations "after a temporary pause" following an airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers on April 1.
"As you know, the decision to temporarily pause our operations was not an easy one. We followed the direction of our staff in Gaza, who've faced death, loss, and destruction since the start of the war," Sean Carroll, the president and CEO of Anera, said in a statement on Thursday. "After the killing of Anera staff member Mousa Shawwa , followed by the attack that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, we made the difficult but necessary decision to pause aid operations on April 2," Carroll added in the statement.
Carroll said Israeli authorities informed him during a meeting Thursday that "certain measures would be taken to protect humanitarian aid workers in Gaza – including Anera's staff."
"With the full support of our Gaza team, we have determined that the circumstances have changed sufficiently to resume our vital humanitarian work in Gaza," Carroll said.
Anera on Thursday resumed "full operations in Gaza to deliver meals, food parcels, hygiene kits, tents, medical treatments, and more to families in dire need," according to the statement.
Iran says its imperative to punish Israel could have been avoided had UN Security Council condemned attack
From CNN’s Natalie Barr and Adam Pourahmadi
The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
“Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," the mission said on X.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on April 1, according to a statement from the UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric. A Security Council discussion was held on April 2 to discuss the attack, but differences among members prevented any formal action or condemnation from taking place.
The United States is on high alert and actively preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region in response to the strike in Damascus that killed top Iranian commanders.
UK foreign secretary warns Iran not to draw Middle East into wider conflict
From CNN's Natalie Barr
Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict following a series of escalating threats made by Iran toward Israel.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that the United Kingdom was "deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," according to a post on X .
Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency on Thursday reported that Amir-Abdollahian had told Cameron that the silence from the UK and the United States following Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week only served to encourage Israel to continue waging war in Gaza and expand its conflict in the region.
US and Israeli defense leaders discuss fears of Iranian attack
From CNN’s Michael Conte in Washington, DC, Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem and Larry Register in Atlanta
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant today to “reaffirm the US ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.
The call comes a day after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel " must be punished and it will be" following a strike on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven Iranian officials.
Israel “will not tolerate an Iranian attack on its territory,” the statement read, adding that the two defense leaders also discussed detailed preparations “for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel.”
Gallant said an Iranian attack on Israel could lead to a regional escalation.
It is the second discussion held between Gallant and Austin over the past week, according to the statement. Gallant expressed his appreciation for Austin’s personal commitment to the security of the State of Israel and for the deepening cooperation between the defense establishments of both countries, as well as between the Israel Defense Forces and US CENTCOM.
State Department restricts personnel travel in Israel amid concerns over Iranian threats
From CNN's Jennifer Hansler
The US State Department has restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran.
“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,” a security alert posted by the US Embassy Thursday said. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.” “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not “speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees and family members’ personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”
“We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days,” Miller said. “Israel is in a very tough neighborhood and we have been monitoring the security situation. You saw us slightly adjust for travel warnings at the beginning of this conflict and we conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”
US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.
Hamas says ceasefire with Israel is essential to collect data on hostages held in Gaza by different groups
From CNN's Abeer Salman and Mohammed Tawfeeq
A member of Hamas' political bureau said a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations.
"Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose," he added.
Naim's statement was in response to questions from media outlets about whether Hamas has been rejecting the latest proposal, which was made in Cairo over the weekend, because it can not release 40 hostages in the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.
According to an Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions, Hamas indicated it is currently unable to identify and track down those 40 Israeli hostages, raising fears that more hostages may be dead than are publicly known.
CNN's record of the conditions of the hostages also suggests there are fewer than 40 living hostages who meet the proposed criteria.
