Check out some old hangout spots for rock ‘n’ roll stars like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, as well as the Stonewall Inn , the site of the 1969 Stonewall riots. Another cool site on the tour is Jones Street , where The Freewheeling Bob Dylan album cover was shot.

Washington Square Park, free nyc tour

Then, see where writers and intellectuals like Edgar Allan Poe used to congregate, such as Washington Square Park and the Café Society, home to the first integrated NYC club. This New York City walking tour also goes to the Friends apartment; the Isaac-Hendricks House, the oldest wood-frame house in NYC; and Cherry Lane Theater , the oldest off-Broadway theater in New York.

As I said, Greenwich Village is one of the best neighborhoods to explore, and the café scene here is excellent, so if you want to see more, consider this NYC cupcake tour . You’ll stop by several top bakeries in the area and get to sample delicious, sweet treats, so it’s one of the best food tours in New York City .

  • Highlights : Washington Square Park, Stonewall Inn, Café Society, Cherry Lane Theater, Friends apartment

11. Chelsea Market tour, another fun walking tour in New York City

I also recommend doing a walking tour of Chelsea, NYC , like this one . It goes through the Meatpacking District, the High Line, and Chelsea Market, giving you a great overview of this area.

First, you’ll walk through the High Line , one of the best parks in NYC and the only elevated park in the city. The High Line was built on old railroad tracks and stretches for over a mile past Chelsea’s art galleries, shops, and The Vessel observation deck. From up here, you’ll have nice views of the Hudson River, too.

Chelsea Market, food tours in new york city

During the tour, your guide will point out the interesting architecture in the Meatpacking District , such as the IAC building, the Empire State Building, and the Standard Hotel. It’s quite a stark contrast from the old factories, warehouses, and slaughterhouses that used to make up this district.

Finally, you’ll visit Chelsea Market , which is housed in an old Nabisco boxing factory. You can have your own New York City food tour here since Chelsea Market is full of stalls selling fresh produce, artisanal products, textiles, sweets, and more. You can also find art galleries and corporate offices for tech companies like YouTube and Google here.

The tour ends at Chelsea Market, so you can spend some time browsing the vendors’ offerings for as long as you like.

  • Highlights : The High Line, Chelsea Market, the Meatpacking District

12. 90-minute Landmarks Cruise, an awesome harbor tour of New York City

For a New York City cruise tour that you can do as a family, check out this boat ride along the Hudson and East Rivers. The 90-minute sightseeing cruise will lead you along the banks of Midtown and Lower Manhattan, granting you wonderful views from the water.

You’ll start by sailing down the Hudson River while your onboard guide points out landmarks like the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. As you cruise further south, you’ll get a good look at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island , then the boat will circle around The Battery , a lovely waterfront park.

New York Harbor, boat tours in new york city

As this New York City harbor tour makes its way up the East River, you’ll go under the Brooklyn Bridge and hear some interesting history about the borough. This tour is affordably priced and grants you a skip-the-line ticket for the cruise, so it’s a fun way to see the city from offshore!

  • Price : $37+
  • Duration : 1.5 hours
  • Highlights : Sail down the Hudson River, past the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, cruise up the East River

13. Movies & TV series tour, the best NYC tour for movie buffs

A New York City movie tour is an awesome experience if you’ve ever wanted to live in the same world as your favorite TV or movie characters. Since lots of films and series are shot in the Big Apple, you can find several cool tours based on popular shows and movies.

For example, this Sex and the City tour goes to some of the most well-known spots from the hit show. You can visit Steve and Aidan’s bar, the church where The Friar and Samantha met, and the Buddakan restaurant where Carrie and Big had their wedding rehearsal dinner. Then, your group will have time to shop at some of Carrie’s favorite Greenwich Village boutiques.

Times Square, bus tours to new york city

Another option is this three-hour Gossip Girl bus tour around the Upper East Side , led by a local NYC actress. See the Empire Hotel, Constance Billard, St. Jude’s, and the Vera Wang boutique where Blair bought her wedding dress. The tour also includes a photo op at the Met Steps and at stop at the Henri Bendel shop that Blair and Serena frequented.

If a New York mob tour is more your style, do this Sopranos tour . This four-hour bus tour through “Sopranoland” stops at some Midtown Manhattan and New Jersey locations from the HBO show, including Fr. Phil’s Parish, Bada Bing, and the diner steps where Chris got shot. You’ll also see the high school pool that AJ trashed and the booth where Tony sat in the final episode. Your guide will be an extra who starred in the show, so they’ll be able to share insider secrets about some of The Sopranos’ most famous scenes.

14. Ghost tour, a haunted tour in New York City you must do

Like many other major cities in the U.S., there are awesome ghost tours in New York City . If you’re up for a creepy experience, I suggest doing this tour through the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral Catacombs .

You’ll be led through the catacombs by candlelight, where your guide will point out the burial sites for various figures in New York’s history. The vaults have served as a final resting place for over 200 years for lawyers, bankers, Civil War-era generals, and New York’s first resident bishop, John Connolly.

St. Patrick's Cathedral Catacombs, ghost tours in new york city

As you walk through the labyrinth of dark halls, you’ll get to see parts of St. Patrick’s Cathedral that are usually closed off to the public. You’ll also see the two walled cemeteries behind the church, so it’s quite an interesting, haunted tour in New York City .

  • Highlights : St. Patrick’s Cathedral catacombs, cemeteries, off-limits areas

15. Dyker Heights & Bay Ridge Christmas lights bus tour, a beautiful night tour of NYC

Finally, if you’re visiting New York during Christmas , you must do a Christmas tour through NYC . This Dyker Heights tour is one of the best since it takes you by bus to one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in NYC during the holidays.

The Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn has a Christmas tradition in which the residents decorate their homes with string lights, illuminated signs, and wreaths. As you take in the sparkling array of gingerbread houses, toy soldiers, and Santa’s reindeer, your guide will share stories and legends about this tradition.

Dyker Heights, christmas tours in new york city

You’ll also visit the Bay Ridge neighborhood, which also boasts a collection of cheery holiday decorations. As you make your way back to Midtown Manhattan, take in the lovely views of the skyline. Without a doubt, this is one of the best night tours of New York City that you can take as a family.

  • Duration : 3.5 hours
  • Highlights : Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge Christmas decorations

1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

' src=

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

Key Things to Know: Top things to do in NYC for a day

  • Essential Stops: Don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, or Central Park for a mix of history and iconic landmarks.
  • Transportation Tip: Maximize your time by using the subway for faster travel between Manhattan’s attractions.
  • Customization: This itinerary is completely customizable to your particular interests and the exact amount of time you have in New York City.

One day in New York itinerary

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan.

In my opinion, your one-day in NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing.

The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day.

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

9/11 Memorial pool in New York City showing names engraved in bronze with buildings and trees in the background.

Statue of Liberty

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)

Your one-day New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket.

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

  • Explore NYC with a sightseeing helicopter tour over Manhattan .
  • Pay a visit to the top of One World Observatory with this skip-the-line ticket .
  • If you’re staying the night in New York, consider this sunset cruise in New York Harbor.

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Lunch options: where to eat

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request.

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

Empire State Building

20 West 34 Street | Subway stop: 34 St–Herald Square (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W), 33 St (M)

Many believe that visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.

New York City skyline with the Empire State Building.

Times Square

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.

tall building in New York City with a sculpture in front

Rockefeller Center

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Grab your Top of the Rock ticket here.

Central Park

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things there you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

  • Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
  • Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
  • Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
  • End your day with a Broadway show.

View of Washington Square arch from below.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

  • Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
  • Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park for some more exploring.
  • Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

New York 1-day tours

Want to see the best of New York in a day, but rather leave the planning to someone else? Leave the planning to an expert tour guide.

  • Pack the very best of NYC into one day with this highly rate expert guided tour . See New York’s major landmarks in only 6 hours.
  • Go beyond Manhattan’s major tourist sites with this tour of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem, and Coney Island .

Where to stay in New York City

If you’re thinking about spending more than a day in New York, you might be overwhelmed by the many hotel options.

Here are my recommendations for where to stay in New York City:

  • Hyatt Place Midtown South (52 West 36th Street): We loved staying at this hotel. It’s just two blocks from the Empire State Building and just around the corner from the 34th Street – Herald Square subway stop. Book Now
  • For a more boutique-style accommodation try Archer Hotel New York (45 West 38th Street). Book Now

How to get around New York City

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

Final thoughts on one day in New York

There are so many amazing things to do in NYC in a day of course that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best if you have 24 hours in the Big Apple.

From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

What do you think everyone should put on their 1-day NYC itinerary?

Can’t wait great job

Great article, Darcy! You have prepared an amazing one-day itinerary for people vising NYC along with some great tips to commute within the city. Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

12. Walk in the Footsteps of a Founding Father on a Hamilton Guided Tour

Unique Tours to Book in New York City: Hamilton Guided Tour

But this two-hour walking tour of the life of Alexander Hamilton was certainly inspired by the international success of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit show. And if you’re a fan of Hamilton, either the person or the show, this NYC tour is a can’t-miss thing to do in the city.

Along this journey, you’ll learn about one of the most controversial founding fathers and how he paved the way for the world as we know it today. You’ll begin in Trinity Church. Here is where your story starts and Hamilton’s ends, as you’ll be able to pay your respects at his final resting place.

From there, you’ll learn about Hamilton’s role in revolutionary movements across time, as well as the creation of the New York Stock Exchange. You’ll end your tour at one of the oldest bars in town, where you’ll grab a drink in the same place where Hamilton and Aaron Burr last met before their infamous duel that took Hamilton’s life.

15. Remember the Fallen at a 9/11 Memorial Tour

Cool Tours to Book in New York City: 9/11 Memorial Tour

There’s no denying that September 11, 2001, changed not just New York City but the world forever. This unique NYC tour may have quite a bit heavier content than the other tours on this list, but it’s a tour you’ll never forget.

On this 90-minute 9/11 memorial tour , you’ll hear stories of triumph and tragedy told to you by a real New Yorker with personal ties to the events of 9/11. You’ll begin your tour at St. Paul’s Chapel, the oldest public building in NYC in continuous use that miraculously survived the 9/11 attacks despite being so close to Ground Zero. It became a makeshift rescue center and community bulletin board in the aftermath of 9/11 and now serves as a tribute site to the fallen.

5 Days in New York: The Ultimate New York City Itinerary

Julie Last updated: February 18, 2024 Itinerary , United States 96 Comments

New York City Travel Itinerary

With 5 days in New York City, you can visit the icons of New York…the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Central Park…and also have enough time to explore different neighborhoods, try new foods, and see a Broadway show. We put together this 5 day New York City itinerary to help you have the best experience here.

About this New York City Itinerary

New York City is massive and the list of places to visit is long. We have been visiting New York City on a regular basis for the past 22 years. I went to graduate school in New Jersey and Tim and I would frequently day trip into the city. Since then, we try to visit New York City once a year, simply because we love this city. In fact, we even started and ended our around the world trip right here. To me, New York feels more like home than Baltimore, the city where I was born and raised.

In general, I grouped sites together based on their location in order to save you time walking and using public transportation. This will keep you from spending unnecessary time on the subway and from backtracking through the city.

You can do these days in any order.

The provided walking distances are the amount of walking you will do to get between sites. These do not include the amount of walking you will do inside of museums, art galleries, etc.

I do my best to keep the hours of operation and pricing up to date for each attraction, however, these can change at any time. I recommend getting updated hours and pricing for your dates of travel. The link to the official website is provided for each site.

You can click the check marks to hide or show layers. If you click the icons on the map, you can get more information about each point of interest.

If you click the star, this map will be added to your Google Maps account. To view it on your phone or computer, open Google Maps, click the menu button, go to “Your Places,” click Maps, and you will see this map on your list.

One World Observatory

One World Trade Center is the seventh tallest building in the world and the tallest building in the western hemisphere. This skyscraper stands next to the footprints of the original World Trade Center buildings that were destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The One World Observatory, which is the observation deck on One World Trade Center, is a great place to take in your first view of New York City. From here, you have awesome views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey. Plus, by being here early in the day, you get to beat the crowds and have a more pleasant experience.

How to Visit One World Observatory

I recommend buying your tickets online in advance. If you purchase tickets online in advance , you will skip the ticket line but could still wait in line for the elevator to the Observatory. You have the option to pay more money to also skip the elevator to the Observation deck and the elevator back down to the lobby. You can also purchase skip-the-line-tickets through GetYourGuide (a great idea if they are sold out on the official website).

Cost:  tickets start at  $44 Hours: Get updated hours here Getting Here: One World Trade Center is accessed from the World Trade Center station on the E line, the Rector Street Station on Line 1, the Fulton Street on Lines 4 and 5, or the Cortland Street Station on Line R.

9/11 Memorial Plaza

After your visit to the One World Observatory, spend some time at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. The 9/11 Memorial Plaza is an 8-acre park where the World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood. The foundations of the Twin Towers have been converted into reflecting pools and the surrounding area is now a grove of trees.

At the 9/11 Memorial Museum, learn about the story of 9/11 through a series of exhibits, artifacts, and interactive technology.

Website: www.911memorial.org Entrance Ticket: Entry tickets can also be purchased through GetYourGuide.

This 2-hour walking tour includes the 9/11 Memorial and Ground Zero, with the option to add on the  9/11 Museum.

The Oculus, also called the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, is a brand new, state-of-the-art train station. It sits right around the corner from the World Trade Center. You know you are in the right spot when you see the brilliantly white, space-aged looking structure.

Oculus 5 Days in New York

The Oculus | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

The Oculus opened in March 2016. It connects the PATH (trains from Newark and Hoboken, New Jersey) to the New York City subway system. It is also a shopping mall and a place to grab a bite to eat.

It’s worth a quick visit and it’s free!

Lunch at Pisillo Italian Panini

Two blocks from the Oculus is a great little Italian sandwich shop. This is popular lunch spot for locals and business people working in the area. These sandwiches are enormous and can be split between two people.

Pisillo Panini

Wall Street

On your way to Battery Park, wander through the Financial District and take a stroll down Wall Street.

Staten Island Ferry

A ride on the Staten Island Ferry is one of New York City’s best free things to do. During this ride, you have great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

The ferry leaves from the Staten Island Ferry terminal, next to Battery Park. Simply get in line and board the next ferry. The ferry is enormous, with multiple decks and inside and outside seating.

I recommend taking a seat outside on the back of the ferry. From this point you can watch Manhattan slowly recede as you approach Staten Island. To your left will be the Statue of Liberty.

Staten Island Ferry View 5 Days in New York

View from the Staten Island Ferry | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Ferries leave every 30 minutes and are more frequent during rush hour. A one-way trip takes about 25 minutes.

You are not permitted to stay on the ferry and ride it round trip. Once you are in Staten Island, exit the ferry, get back in line, and re-board the ferry. We were able to get right back onto the same ferry without having to wait for the next one (on a Monday morning in February).

The entire round trip ride takes about one hour.

Get the full details about the Staten Island ferry on the official website .

Spend the afternoon in SoHo

SoHo is a neighborhood in Manhattan that is home to art galleries, trendy shops, and restaurants. It gets its name from its location “South of Houston Street.”

Spend the afternoon wandering and shopping here.

To get to SoHo from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal using the subway, walk to the Whitehall Street Station. Take the R line four stations uptown to Prince Street.

For dinner, we highly recommend Piccola Cucina Osteria. This tiny restaurant serves traditional Sicilian food. We have eaten in Little Italy many times but this restaurant is so much better than any place in Little Italy. The food is amazing. It’s a small place so I recommend making a reservation in advance .

SOHO

5 Days in New York dinner

For dessert, you have two options in the area. Just across the street from Piccola Cucina Osteria is Dominique Ansel Bakery . This bakery has unique desserts…how about trying a cookie baked in the shape of a cup and filled with milk? Yum!

One block from Piccola Cucina Osteria is Black Tap , a restaurant that is legendary for its gigantic milkshakes topped with cookies, brownies, and even slices of pie. If you want to take a cool food photo on Instagram during your trip to NYC, this is a good place to put on your list. Expect to wait in line for at least 30 minutes.

New York City Itinerary: Day 2

Art Museums, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square

Take Your Pick from Four Art Museums

There are a bunch of fabulous art museums in Manhattan. Spend the morning in the one that sounds the most interesting to you.

The Museum of Modern Art

The Modern Museum of Art (MoMA) has one of the world’s best collections of art from the 18th century to today. See The Starry Night by Van Gogh, The Persistence of Memory by Dali, and works of art by Matisse, Monet, and Picasso.

Hours: Sunday through Friday 10:30 am to 5:30 pm; Saturday 10:30 am to 7 pm Cost: Adults $28, under 16 years old are free Website: www.moma.org

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Met is enormous. It’s so big that you can measure the size of this museum in acres (13 acres!!). Come see one of the best collections of ancient art from all around the world.

The Guggenheim Museum

This is another modern art museum. The building, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is also a work of modern art.

The suggested admission is $10. Tickets: Tickets can be purchased on the official website.

The Frick Collection

See world-class art by Vermeer, Renoir, and Rembrandt in a beautifully designed residence.

IMPORTANT:  The Frick Collection is currently closed for a renovation project. The works of art were relocated to a temporary location, called the Frick Madison, which is in the Marcel Breuer-designed modernist building at 945 Madison Avenue. Learn more  here.

Cost: Adults $22, children under 10 are not permitted Hours: Thursday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm; closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Pay What You Wish: pay what you wish on Thursdays 4 pm to 6 pm Website: www.frick.org

Where you choose to have lunch depends upon the art museum you visit. If you chose the MoMA, here are two recommendations:

Patsy’s Italian Restaurant: This family-owned restaurant has been in business since 1944. Frank Sinatra made this place famous and many other celebrities have dined here, including Ben Stiller, Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, James Gandolfini, and many more. I recommend the Eggplant Parmesan (it was the best I ever had!).

The Black Tap: This restaurant serves craft burgers and beer but it’s famous for its over-the-top milkshakes topped with brownies, cookies, and slices of cake and pie (mentioned under Day 1 as a dessert destination near SoHo).

If you picked one of the other art museums, explore the area around the museum for lunch spots.

Central Park

Central Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Therefore a visit to New York City would not be complete without at least a quick stroll through part of the park.

Central Park is much more than a tourist destination. For New Yorkers, this is a treasured green space, a spot to lie out in the sun, go for a run, and take the kids to the playground.

Spend part of the afternoon exploring Central Park. You can simply wander through it on your own two feet, rent bikes and cycle a lap or two through the entire park, or do something very touristy and go for a horse and carriage ride. There are numerous places to rent bikes just outside of the park. We have the best luck one block south of the park around 5th and 6th avenue. You can also rent bikes in advance here.

Notable spots to visit in Central Park are the Imagine Mosaic at Strawberry Fields, Bow Bridge (one of the most photographed locations in the park), Belvedere Castle, Sheep Meadow, and The Mall.

Explore Midtown Manhattan

For the rest of the afternoon, stroll through midtown Manhattan. From Central Park, pop into The Plaza, one of the most famous hotels in the world. Then stroll down Fifth Avenue until you get to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck or SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

Today, take your pick between two observation decks: Top of the Rock and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. Of the two, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is our favorite. You get one of the best views of Manhattan and it is a very unique experience, with the mirrored rooms and immersive art installations. Top of the Rock is also very nice, but it doesn’t beat the view from SUMMIT. For photos of both, check out our Guide to NYC’s Observation Decks.

If you choose Top of the Rock, the best time to visit it is now, since it is located on top of Rockefeller Center. If you choose SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, plan your visit for the end of the day, when you are near Grand Central Terminal. Time your visit an hour before sunset for the best experience.

From Top of the Rock, you get a great view of New York City from Midtown Manhattan. To the north you see Central Park, Harlem, and the Bronx. To the south, you not only get to see the Empire State Building, but you also get to see the towering skyscrapers of the financial district (and One World Trade Center) off in the distance.

Top of the Rock View

View from Top of the Rock in February 2018, before One Vanderbilt was constructed.

While in the area, you can also take a tour of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall . Just note, if you do choose to take a tour, you will have to skip most of the activities planned this afternoon.

Times Square

From Rockefeller Center, it’s just a five-minute walk to iconic, crowded, chaotic, touristy Times Square.

Times Square New York City itinerary

Times Square | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

This is one of the most famous intersections in the world. Every New Year’s Eve, thousands people gather to watch the ball drop, making this the most famous place in the world to welcome in the New Year. During the other 364 days of the year, Times Square is almost as crowded, as street performers put on shows and visitors from around the world gawk at the millions of lights that adorn the neon billboards.

It seems like Times Square is always changing. Every year, there are bigger and better billboards, new stores designed to draw visitors in, and crazier street performers on the streets. It is a crowded, overwhelming place and not everyone enjoys this experience. Take as long (or as little) as you like in this dazzling, gaudy place.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: If this is your first time in New York City, it’s worth seeing Times Square in the daytime and at nighttime. It really is neat to see all lit up at night.

New York Public Library and Grand Central Station

There are just a few more spots to visit on this very busy afternoon. From Times Square, walk to Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. The library is free and it is worth a quick visit. It’s a beautiful building on the inside and has been featured in popular movies such as “Ghostbusters,” “The Day after Tomorrow,” and “Sex and the City.”

Rose Reading Room

Rose Reading Room the the NYC Public Library

A few blocks from the library is Grand Central Terminal. This is the largest train station in the world, with 44 train platforms. The Main Concourse is a gorgeous spot to visit. Walk up the steps to the Apple Store and watch the show as hundreds of people crisscross the Main Concourse.

Grand Central Station

Grand Central Terminal | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Inside of Grand Central Terminal is the Grand Central Market. This is a small market but it is a great place to put together a meal. With fresh fruits, pastas, cheese, and wine, you have the option to assemble a picnic dinner here.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

One Vanderbilt is the fourth tallest building in Manhattan. On the top three levels of One Vanderbilt is SUMMIT, New York City’s newest observation deck. The views are spectacular but SUMMIT One Vanderbilt takes the experience to a whole different level. On these three floors is a state-of-the-art, fully immersive experience with art installations, mirrored rooms, glass sky boxes, and a glass elevator.

Summit One Vanderbilt Photo

Tickets start at $42 and a visit here typically lasts 2 hours. In my opinion, the best time to visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is an hour before sunset.

End the day with dinner and drinks. If you like the idea of Japanese food, consider going to Momosan Ramen & Sake, just a few blocks from Grand Central Terminal and One Vanderbilt.

New York City Itinerary: Day 3

The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Tenement Museum & a Food Tour

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

If it’s your first time in New York, the Statue of Liberty is a must see. You can visit just the Statue of Liberty or you can visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island together as a round trip excursion from Manhattan.

Statue of Liberty 5 Days in New York

Statue of Liberty | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

At the Statue of Liberty, you can climb the base of the statue or go all of the way to the crown. Both of these options require advance tickets, and they do sell out, so make sure you book your tickets well in advance.

Ellis Island was an immigrant inspection station and approximately 12 million immigrants were processed here between 1905 and 1954.

Ellis Island New York City itinerary

Ellis Island | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

Liberty Island (the location of the Statue of Liberty) and Ellis Island are connected by ferry with Battery Park (on Manhattan).

The entire visit, from Battery Park to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and then back to Battery Park, takes about 4 to 6 hours. You will take a ferry from Battery Park to Liberty Island. After seeing the Statue of Liberty, catch the next ferry to Ellis Island and tour this island. Then take a ferry back to Battery Park.

PRO TRAVEL TIP:   Tickets tend to sell out in advance. As soon as you know your travel dates, consider booking your Statue of Libery tickets.

Cost: $24.80 adults, $12.30 children 4 – 12 years for the Crown Reserve Ticket Hours: Ferries depart from Battery Park from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Website: Book your tickets in advance on www.statuecruises.com

You can also join one of these guided tours of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Tenement Museum

Now that you learned about what it was like to be an immigrant arriving in the United States, continue the experience with a visit to the Tenement Museum. Located on the Lower East Side, learn about what it was like to live as an immigrant between the 19th and 21st centuries.

Numerous tours are offered. Visit the Tenement Museum website for full details.

To get to the Tenement Museum from Battery Park, walk to the Broad Street station and take line J uptown four stations to Delancey St/Essex St (8 minutes).

Take a Food Tour in Manhattan

Little Italy and Chinatown are places that are frequently listed in guidebooks. For years, we loved spending an afternoon wandering through Chinatown or dining at a restaurant in Little Italy. However, in recent years, things have changed. Now, most of the restaurants in Little Italy are mediocre, overpriced restaurants that are well worth skipping. On our most recent visit to New York, Tim and I stopped into one of these restaurants for a drink and even the wine was mediocre.

Little Italy 5 Days in New York

Little Italy | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

If you are curious about Little Italy and Chinatown, they are still worth a quick visit. But you should know that there are much better places in New York for quality Italian and Chinese food.

A better way to spend the afternoon is to take a food tour in Manhattan. This 2-hour walking food tour of Hell’s Kitchen gets rave reviews. If you like the idea of combining a walking tour with a food tour of Greenwich Village, I recommend taking a look at this tour. Finally, on this 3-hour food tour on the Lower East Side you will sample German, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, and Jewish dishes and hear stories about the immigrants who settled here.

NIGHTLIFE IN MANHATTAN:   If you want to go out for drinks, we recommend Death & Company. This speak-easy bar serves amazing craft cocktails. They also sell several cocktail books. We love Cocktail Codex (it’s an essential cocktail book if you like to make mixed drinks). Their book called Death & Company: Modern Classic Cocktails also gets stellar reviews, but the recipes call for very specific liquors and infusions, and you would have to have a very well-stock bar to make many of these drinks.

New York City Itinerary: Day 4

Brooklyn is becoming one of New York City’s hot spots to visit. With historic neighborhoods, a fabulous food scene, and some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, this is a great place to add to your New York City itinerary.

Since Brooklyn is so large, it’s impossible to visit all of it in just one day. With just one day you can visit the neighborhood of Williamsburg and the areas along the East River. Think of today as a mini food tour combined with some of the best views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.

From here, enjoy one of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, dine on the best pizza in the city, and end with a walk over the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Get the full details in our article: One Perfect Day in Brooklyn

PRO TRAVEL TIP: This Brooklyn day trip works best on a Saturday or Sunday. Both Brooklyn Bowl and the Brooklyn Brewery open midday on the weekend, versus 6 pm during the weekdays. Plus, midtown Manhattan and the popular touristy sites in New York can be very crowded on the weekends, so Brooklyn makes a nice escape from the crowds.

New York City Itinerary: Day 5

Empire State Building, Chelsea Market, the High Line & Hudson Yards

Empire State Building

Start the day with a trip up the Empire State Building. Completed in 1931, this was the tallest building in the world for 40 years until the North Tower of the World Trade Center was completed in 1970. The Empire State Building has been featured in over 250 TV shows and movies and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Empire State Building View

View of Manhattan

Looking south from the Empire State Building.

If you don’t mind waking up early, you can watch the sunrise from the top of the Empire State Building. Tickets are limited to 100 visitors and need to be purchased in advance. It’s pricey, costing $100 per person, and tickets are only available for Friday and Saturday mornings.

Cost: standard tickets start at $44 for adults and $38 for children Hours: Vary be season. Get updated hours on the official website. Website: Get the full details on packages and VIP experiences on the official Empire State Building website . Get Your Guide: You can also purchase your entrance tickets in advance through GetYourGuide.

Chelsea Market

From the Empire State Building, visit Chelsea Market for lunch.

The Chelsea Market is food paradise!! This is one of our favorite places in Manhattan for lunch. Inside of the market are numerous small restaurants selling food from around the world. Our favorite restaurants are Los Tacos No. 1, the Lobster Place, and Takumi Taco. There are also a number of boutique shops if you like to go shopping.

How to Get to Chelsea Market from the Empire State Building: From the Empire State Building, it is a 3-minute walk to the 34 St – Herald Square Subway Station. Take the D train (orange) towards Coney Island. At W 4 St – Washington Square, transfer to E train (blue) towards Jamaica Center. Exit at 14 St/8 Ave and walk one block to Chelsea Market. This takes 16 minutes. Or, take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft.

Optional: 9/11 Museum Workshop

One block away from Chelsea Market is the Ground Zero Museum Workshop. This museum documents what life was like for the workers and firefighters at Ground Zero during the recovery effort. Filled with artifacts and photographs, this is a great museum to visit if you want to learn more about what it was like to be at the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attack. This is one of the most underrated museums in New York City and well worth your time.

9 11 Museum Workshop

Cost: Adults $32, children 4 – 12 years old $25 Hours: Hours vary by day of the week; closed Sudnay, Monday and Tuesday; get hours on the official website Website: Learn more about the museum here.

Optional: Greenwich Village

Spend an hour or two in Greenwich Village. Greenwich Village was the location of the 60’s counterculture movements and the modern LGBT movement. Now, the “bohemian days” are long gone, due to rising housing costs and gentrification of the neighborhood, but this is still a wonderful spot to visit.

To get the most out of your visit, this walking tour of Greenwich Village sounds amazing. Learn where Jimi Hendrix and Edgar Allen Poe hung out, where one of Bob Dylan’s album covers was photographed, and the rise of gay rights in New York City.

The High Line

Mid-afternoon, walk the High Line to Hudson Yards. This is a public park and elevated walking path that was built on a historic freight line.

High Line

The High Line | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

It’s free to visit and one of Manhattan’s prettiest walks. The High Line starts near the Whitney Museum, but you can also get onto the High Line from Chelsea Market.

It takes about 30 minutes to walk from Chelsea Market to Hudson Yards.

Hudson Yards, the Vessel, & the Edge

Spend the rest of the day in the ultra-modern Hudson Yards.

What was once a storage yard and jumble of train tracks has evolved into Manhattan’s newest ultra-modern neighborhood.

The trains and their tracks are still here, but this small city has been built on a state-of-the-art platform that is elevated above the railroad tracks. Glass-plated skyscrapers, a shopping mall, a performing arts theater, and two of Manhattan’s very popular attractions, the Vessel and the Edge, can all be found here.

Only the ground level of the Vessel can be visited.

The Vessel

The Vessel | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

LEARN MORE: How to Visit the Vessel

In 2020, The Edge joined the growing number of observation decks in Manhattan. Hovering 100 floors above the city streets, this sky deck offers jaw-dropping views over Manhattan. Adding to the thrill is the glass floor, where you can peer down to the city streets far below.

New York City Itinerary

The Edge | 5 Day New York City Itinerary

The best time to visit the Edge is at sunset. These tickets sell out in advance, so make your reservations once you know your dates of travel. If you can’t get sunset tickets, you can arrive mid to late afternoon and stick around for sunset. I also recommend checking GetYourGuide, because they are an authorized ticket seller for Hudson Yards and they might have availability for your date and time.

There is also a new experience. Called City Climb, you wear a harness, climb up along the edge of the skyscraper, and view New York City from the highest observation deck in the city. This takes two hours and ends with a visit to the Edge. We did this in November 2021 and it is awesome! It’s definitely the most thrilling view of Manhattan. For more information and photos, click the link below to read our Guide to the Edge and City Climb.

Note: City Climb ends with a visit to the Edge sky deck. The City Climb experience takes 2 hours. If you book one of the last tours of the day, you can end with sunset views from the Edge.

Cost: Tickets start at $36 for the Edge. There is an additional $10 to $20 fee for sunset tickets. For City Climb, tickets start at $185. Hours: 8 am to midnight Getting Here: From the Vessel, enter The Shops at Hudson Yards, which sit right next to the Vessel. Take the elevator to the 4th floor and follow signs to the Edge.

LEARN MORE: Complete Guide to the Edge & City Climb

If you want to have dinner in Hudson Yards, Peak restaurant at the Edge is pricey but the views of Manhattan are spectacular. For the best experience, make a reservation in advance and request a table with a view of the city skyline. We recently had a great lunch at Mercado Little Spain . Estiatorio Milos (Greek food) is one of our favorite restaurants in Manhattan.

More Ideas for How to Spend Your Time

Seeing a show on Broadway is a quintessential New York experience. You can book your tickets in advance, or buy them the same day through TKTS in Times Square.

Watch a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, visit Luna Park at Coney Island, take a cruise of New York Harbor, fly over Manhattan in a helicopter, or even run in the New York City Marathon.

For a full list of things to do, check out our New York City Bucket List: 50 Best Things to Do in New York.

Using the Subway

To get around New York City, we recommend using the Subway. The New York City Subway is functional but it is dirty, smelly, and in great need of renovation work. It may not be pretty but it will get you where you need to go cheaply and efficiently.

New York Subway 5 Days in New York City itinerary

I recommend downloading the NYC Subway app on your smartphone (it’s free!). This is the app I use to find routes between destinations.

I also recommend purchasing a 7 Day Unlimited Ride Metrocard . It costs $33 and you can ride the subway an unlimited number of times in seven days (there is not a 5 day unlimited ride Metrocard). It costs $2.75 per ride on the metro. If you ride the metro 12 or more times (which you will do on this itinerary) the card pays for itself.

Hello Julie,

Your website is wonderful and has already provided several ideas for our upcoming trip. My family and I, all adults, are headed to NYC in December and have 3 full days. Would you suggest any “must do/see” during that time? Otherwise I am planning on modifying your 5 day itinerary with a few Holiday caveats. I’m also concerned about the weather. We’re from Portland, OR and use to rain but not frigid conditions. Thanks for any advice!

Avatar for Julie

Hello Jon. Definitely see the Rockefeller tree. Kara has seen the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and thought it was just OK (she was 16 at the time). NYC has a very festive vibe that time of year. The weather could be hit or miss, meaning it could be quite cool but it also be relatively mild. As far as big things to see in NYC outside of the Christmas holiday festivities, I think visiting at least one observation deck for a view over the city is a very nice thing to do, seeing Times Square and the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and exploring a neighborhood like Chelsea, Greenwich, or Soho. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, thanks for the detailed itinerary, it’s really useful in our NY planning. In an earlier comment, you mention a link to a comparison site for all the different city passes. We cannot find it. Would you please post it here? Thanks Rachel

That website went down, as far as I know, so I had to remove the link, because it no longer worked. There are multiple passes and what they cover is always changing. It’s too much for me to keep up with, but you could do a Google search for recommended passes in NYC and hopefully that will get you the info you need. Cheers, Julie

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art the tickets are no longer valid for 3 days, sadly.

That is a shame. Thank you for letting us know!

First visit to NYC from Scotland and getting completely confused re the NYC Pass and the NY Pass, etc. Is there any one you would recommend?

Hello Susan. No, we haven’t used the passes ourselves (we take the train up for a day or two and just do a few things). In this article I give a link to a website that seems to do a good job explaining them and would be more accurate than what I know, without doing a lot of research myself. Cheers, Julie

I enjoyed reading through your five-day itinerary…, and had hoped to replicate each of its activities by following it on our trip (4 Adults in April 2024) – our planning is only allowing six nights with four full days in NYC – staying near times square. Can you suggest how we should adjust the five-day itinerary to provide the best NYC experience in the 4 days we have available.

Yes, you could combine days 2 and 3 together. Start with the Statue of Liberty in the morning. In the afternoon, visit one of the art museums listed on day 2, take a stroll through the southern end of Central Park, and then visit Top of the Rock or SUMMIT. See Times Square that evening before heading back to your hotel. Cheers, Julie

Is there a printable itinerary? I’m afraid once we arrive my phone will die and we will be lost the rest of the day.

We don’t have a printable pdf available. You can print it out ahead of time, using your browser, but unfortunately it will be a lot of paper. Cheers, Julie

We will be arriving on a cruise and only have one day in NYC, October 27, 2023. There are 3 couples with varied experiences there (one couple has been there several times and one couple has only been there once for half a day). What would you recommend for such a limited time that would satisfy all of us?

For first timers, the essential things to do are the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, a view from an observation deck, and maybe the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. You could start the day with the Statue of Liberty, take a taxi or ride the subway to the 9/11 Memorial Plaza, with the option to visit the One World Observatory. Have a quick lunch and then spend the second half of the day following the afternoon of day 2 of this itinerary, which includes Times Square, Central Park, midtown Manhattan and you could do one of the observation decks listed for that day or do the Empire State Building. If that’s too repetitive for some in your group, you could skip the repetitive parts and add in an art museum, Chelsea Market, the Highline, or some time in SoHo or Greenwich Village. Cheers, Julie

Hi! Which is best entrance to Central Park to get to Mall. Thank you

You can enter Central Park around 65th street (from the east or west), and as you approach the center of the park, you will be at the bottom of The Mall and can walk north along it until you get to Bethesda Terrace. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie! We’re going on a couples trip to NYC and are wondering which 9/11 museum you recommend more: the 9/11 memorial museum or the 9/11 museum workshop. We’ve already been to ground zero, just never inside the museum down there.

I really liked the experience at the workshop. It’s tiny but to see the artifacts and be able to talk to Gary Marlon Suson about his experience was eye opening. If you have already been to Ground Zero with no plans to go back that way, the workshop may work better with your itinerary. It’s easy to combine with Chelsea Market and the nearby Whitney Museum or Rubin Institute of Art. Cheers, Julie

Central Park Central Park free

This part-park, part-museum, part-concert hall swallows central Manhattan, and many of the city's most notable attractions are situated next to it or within its limits ( the Guggenheim , the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History , to name a few). But travelers insist that you shouldn't just pass through Central Park on your way to another place. This 843-acre green space is a favorite of New Yorkers and tourists; you can come here to exercise, dine, go to the zoo and more.

Almost everyone has a positive impression of the park, but no one has quite the same experience or recommends that you do quite the same thing. There's an almost impossible amount of sights to see here (hidden treasures, indeed), including more than 20 playgrounds, 48 fountains, monuments or sculptures, and 30 bridges. Here's a shortlist:

National September 11 Memorial & Museum National September 11 Memorial & Museum

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum serves as the primary tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as the six lost in the 1993 bombing. The memorial's twin reflecting pools and human-made waterfalls rest as eerie footprints where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood. The 1-acre pools are enclosed in bronze panels on which the names of every victim are inscribed. The museum spans across 110,000 square feet and relays the narrative of the attacks through a series of multimedia displays, real-time recordings, authentic artifacts and an interactive table.

Recent visitors cited the overall atmosphere of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum as sobering and moving. Many travelers say they were impressed with the site as a whole, noting its respectful and informational displays. Reviewers say you won't want to rush your time here, with some recommending that you budget three to four hours to see all of the exhibits.

New York City Tourist 101 dictates that you must swing by this landmark structure in midtown Manhattan. And despite the hefty admission fees, the crowds and the long lines, recent visitors insist that you won't be sorry. In fact, taking a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is either the perfect way to begin or end your Big Apple excursion – on a clear day you'll be able to the see the city's major highlights some 1,250 feet beneath you.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Come for the art, stay for the rooftop cocktails. A seasonal rooftop garden bar offers views over Central Park, which is especially coveted at sunset. The roof garden stays open into the evening on Friday and Saturday. – Jessica Colley Clarke

No museum in the United States is as celebrated as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Spilling over with masterpieces from all over the world, including notable collections from ancient Egypt and classical antiquity, "the Met" is an art experience unlike any other, and like much in New York, it's impossible to see all the museum has to offer in one day (or even two days, for that matter).

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Statue of Liberty is at the top of many travelers’ must-see lists. A feat of 19th-century technical engineering and a beacon for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, the statue can be admired from several different vantage points around Manhattan, including Battery Park and the High Line . But to truly appreciate its size and significance, you’ll want to visit the statue and Ellis Island while on your NYC vacation.

The only way to access the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is by using the official National Park Service ferry operator, Statue City Cruises. If you’re departing from the New York side, you’ll hop on a ferry at Battery Park in lower Manhattan. If you’re departing from the New Jersey side, you’ll depart from Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The ferry ride takes approximately 15 minutes.

Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn Bridge free

One of many signature landmarks of New York City, the Brooklyn Bridge is also one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Its six lanes (and one pedestrian and bicycle walkway) span the East River, connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Walking across the bridge remains a tourist pastime.

Some visitors decide to skip the bridge in favor of other attractions, but if you're short on money, this truly is one of the best ways to experience the city and to get a unique view of either borough at no cost. Several reviewers warn that since there is no shade along the bridge, it can get quite hot in the summertime (though there are vendors selling bottles of water). Many also warned that it can get quite crowded, and advised visiting in the morning before 9 a.m. if you don't want to maneuver around crowds.

Set on an abandoned rail track on Manhattan's West Side, this sprawling, nearly 1½-mile-long landscaped park stretches over three of the city's most lively neighborhoods: the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen. Standing 30 feet above street level, the High Line offers sweeping views of the Hudson River and Manhattan's cityscape. But the vista isn't the only reason visitors and Manhattanites flock to this manicured green space. Here, you'll find continually changing public art installations, a handful of food vendors and a sprawling picnic and sunbathing area (known as the 23rd Street Lawn).

The central gathering place of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park, an almost 10-acre green space known for its downtown buzz. Here, kids splash in the fountain, musicians perform to a crowd, artists sell sketches or photographs, and chess enthusiasts gather to challenge each other to a game. What was historically a cemetery and later a bohemian hot spot is now a neighborhood institution that draws locals and visitors alike with its kids' playground, sizable dog run and ample shady space for picnics. An arch dedicated to George Washington is the dominant architectural feature of the park.

Some out-of-towners spend their entire New York trip at one show or another on the Broadway circuit. And if you like plays and musicals, this is where you should be: "The Great White Way" represents the heart and soul of American theater. Considering that nearby Times Square is a dizzying maze of sights and sounds with no real starting point, some visitors suggest you can see all you need to of that neighborhood just by trundling back and forth between shows.

One World Observatory One World Observatory

Formerly known as Freedom Tower, One World Trade Center is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in lower Manhattan. This observatory sits atop the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the highest point in the city. You'll find it adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial . At more than 125,000 square feet, the three-level observatory is located on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors of this office skyscraper. Travelers enjoy the panoramic, 360-degree views, up to 45 miles in every direction on clear days.

Visitors reach the observatory by direct express elevators known as SkyPods. The trip upward includes a visual presentation showing how New York has changed over the decades, from open land to smaller buildings to skyscrapers. The trip takes less than a minute. Expect a multimedia presentation at the top before stunning views are revealed. A restaurant and bar on the 101st floor are open to guests who have purchased tickets to the observatory.

Before you enter, be sure to snap a few shots of the exterior's ornate beaux-arts neoclassical architecture. Inside the celebrated main concourse, you're treated to glimmering marble floors, gold and nickel-plated chandeliers and a sky-themed ceiling. Other must-sees include the Information Booth clock, the Whispering Gallery and Grand Central Market, a European-style food market that sells produce, gourmet ingredients and treats. Food options range from the upscale (Cipriani Dolci and The Campbell Bar) to the legendary (the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant) to the fast and easy (Shake Shack). As mentioned, there are also plenty of shopping options, though most travelers suggest you leave most of Grand Central's pricey merchandise in the store. If you want a train-themed souvenir, visit The New York Transit Museum Store in the shuttle passage.

Travelers call the train station "iconic" and say it's a beautiful space to walk through or to grab a meal and people-watch.

Staten Island Ferry Staten Island Ferry free

Perhaps the most famous ferry service in the United States, the Staten Island Ferry runs daily between the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in lower Manhattan and St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. The city has been operating the ferry service since 1905 and transports some 70,000 passengers across New York Harbor every day. It’s one of the last remaining vestiges of an entire ferry system that served New York City residents before the construction of any bridges.

But the Staten Island Ferry is more than a transportation service; it’s an attraction, drawing tens of thousands of out-of-town visitors a year for a free ride across the harbor (that’s right, no charge; the service is provided by the City of New York). The 5-mile ride lasts about 25 minutes. Passengers must disembark and then reboard to make the return trip to Manhattan. Travelers remark about the views of the Statue of Liberty , Ellis Island, Manhattan skyscrapers and the bridges of lower Manhattan.

Museum of Modern Art Museum of Modern Art

You don't have to be an art lover to appreciate the Museum of Modern Art; this airy midtown gallery also doubles as a shrine of pop culture and 20th century history. Some of the most significant contemporary pieces hang on its walls, including Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," Warhol's "Campbell's Soup Cans," Van Gogh's "Starry Night," Dalí's "The Persistence of Memory," Monet's "Water Lilies," and the list goes on and on. In October 2019, the museum reopened after completing an expansion project that added more than 40,000 square feet of gallery space, as well as a performance studio that features live programming.

Recent travelers were impressed by the extensive art collection and loved being able to see the museum's famous paintings. The $30 entry fee for adults ($17 for students; $22 for seniors; free for kids 16 and younger) can be hard to stomach for some, but reviewers insist you won't regret the money spent. A few travelers express disappointment with the crowds (which are most common on rainy days), but suggest getting some fresh air at the museum's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

Visitors love the American Museum of Natural History off Central Park West. Whether you're exploring the interactive exhibits on the land, the sea or outer space; user reviews take on a common theme. This museum is incredible. Even the cafeteria and gift shop are worth your notice.

There are more than 34 million artifacts inside, spread across four city blocks, 26 buildings and through 45 exhibition halls, so don't plan on seeing everything in one day. The Rose Center for Earth and Space is a particular favorite, but you should also plan on visiting the dinosaurs, the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Hall of the Universe and the Butterfly Conservatory (accessible November through May), which houses nearly 500 butterflies. Local experts say the institution is one of the city's can't-miss museums , especially for families.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Wander along Brooklyn's Washington Avenue, and you can't avoid stumbling upon this verdant 52-acre park. A main highlight here is the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, punctuated by wooden bridges and Japanese maples. And if you arrive at the end of April, you can't miss the Cherry Esplanade ( Sakura Matsuri ) when rosy cherry blossoms burst into bloom. Another standout: the Shakespeare Garden, which contains more than 80 plants described in the playwright's works.

Thanks to the garden's extensive collection, which includes 13 gardens and five conservatories, there's plenty of scenery to soak up here. Plus, you can take advantage of year-round exhibits and events, such as children's gardening workshops and Lightscape, the annual wintertime lights display. After you've taken respite in Brooklyn's cherished green space, recent visitors suggest moseying over to two staples located down the street: Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum.

Located on the Brooklyn side of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre oasis at the foot of the famous bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. The park stretches 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s waterfront, connecting Columbia Heights and Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, an eclectic neighborhood of boutiques, trendy cafes and restaurants. Travelers rave about the views of the lower Manhattan skyline, the New York Harbor and the bridge.

Among the city’s newest parks, Brooklyn Bridge Park was once an industrial district and home to a transportation terminal that served as an entry point for immigrants. Today, the park features rolling hills, promenades, playgrounds, basketball courts, sports fields, a roller skating rink, gardens, and more among six piers and the riverfront. What’s more, the park is home to more than 12,000 species of plants and wildlife. It also hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year, such as sunset yoga and stargazing.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, or simply, "The Guggenheim," is one of the most well-known art museums in the country, and it's just as renowned for its cutting-edge design as it is for its pieces. The coiled building (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) stands out on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street. Inside, the halls are chock full of works from the likes of Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Van Gogh, among others.

Visitors loved the building's design and architecture, but offered more mixed reviews for the art on display. Some raved about the permanent collection and the special exhibitions, while others felt the cost of entrance tickets was overpriced for the amount of art displayed. Reviewers recommended the Museum of Modern Art over the Guggenheim if you're short on time.

Off-Broadway Shows Off-Broadway Shows

Off-Broadway may not have the glitter of the Great White Way , but these smaller theaters and their productions are often innovative and are no less engaging. Unlike Broadway, these theaters are not centered around Times Square , but scattered all over Manhattan and generally seat fewer people (between 100 to 499 audience members). Smaller venues provide a more intimate experience for plays, musicals and revues. Many of New York’s most famous productions found their start off-Broadway, such as “Hair,” “Rent” and “In the Heights.”

Tickets also are more affordable, generally between $20 and $75 per person. Look for innovative productions at places like the Public Theater, Cherry Lane Theatre or Playwrights Horizons. The Signature Theatre showcases revivals and new plays.

But don't fret if your New York adventure doesn't take place during the cold months. There's plenty to do year-round. If you plan ahead, you can spend a morning watching a taping of the "Today" show, an afternoon admiring the city from the Top of the Rock Observation Deck and an evening catching a performance at Radio City Music Hall .

Little Island Little Island free

New Yorkers have long needed to get creative to maximize space on the island of Manhattan, where space is limited. But with the opening of Little Island in 2021, that creativity stretched beyond the island's borders and into the water. Little Island is an artificial island located on the west side of Manhattan in the Hudson River. This public park, which is free to visit, offers a new space for locals and visitors alike to immerse themselves in nature, art, free events like concerts and one of the most memorable locations in New York City to catch the sunset.

Most recent visitors praised Little Island for its peaceful atmosphere, splash of greenery and views of the Hudson River and beyond. Some recent visitors recommend planning a visit on a weekday rather than a weekend, when this attraction can be crowded with people picnicking, especially during the golden sunset hours. Regardless of what time of day visitors stop by, almost everyone is left with a positive impression of the park and note its sculptures, family-friendly vibe, impressive variety of plants and free concerts.

Opened in 1879, the neo-Gothic cathedral spans the length of an entire city block and features 330-foot spires. Its interior is just as impressive thanks to its numerous altars, stained-glass windows, organs and imposing 9,000-pound bronze doors. The church welcomes more than 5 million visitors annually.

Restaurants serving classic Italian dishes on red-and-white checkered tablecloths can still be found in the neighborhood. Among the neighborhood staples is Lombardi’s, a restaurant that has been tossing pizzas since 1905 and claims to be the first pizzeria in the United States. Times Square Times Square free

Some say that Times Square is like a five-block metaphor for New York City itself – it's exciting, colorful and always jumping. Others describe this area of midtown Manhattan as artless, overpriced and congested. Perhaps this commercial stretch from West 42nd to West 47th streets is a little of both, and though locals would advise you to avoid it, you should at least catch a glimpse of its neon lights. Most travelers recommend visiting the area after dark to see the marquee displays. Many add checking out Times Square before or after a Broadway show is the perfect time to fit it into your schedule. However, if you're not a fan of crowds, reviewers suggest you avoid this area altogether.

Times Square's biggest tourist draw is the annual New Year's Eve ball drop. Revelers crowd the area to see New York's famous Waterford crystal ball descend 77 feet from a pole on the One Times Square building. If you're feeling brave, take a trip to New York and Times Square at this time of year and watch the ball drop for free! Just plan on coming in the early morning and staying all day, and note that the area is super crowded, even by New York standards.

This zoo's claim to fame is that it's one of the largest metropolitan animal parks in the country. It's also one of the best zoos in the U.S . Originally opened at 1899, the zoo also houses several famous landmarks, including the Rainey Memorial Gates, the Rockefeller Fountain and the historic Zoo Center, which was constructed to look like a palace.

Among the zoo's popular exhibits is JungleWorld, which aims to recreate the jungles of Asia with animals like white-cheeked gibbons, gharials, tapirs, fruit bats and more. There's also the Wild Asia Monorail, a seasonal outdoor monorail that allows visitors to observe animals like rhinos, tigers and red pandas roaming freely in the outdoor habitat. Frick Collection Frick Collection

While the 20th-century mansion that traditionally houses this robust art collection undergoes a renovation (through 2024), highlights of the institution’s works will be showcased in a temporary home, the Frick Madison (located five blocks north on Madison Avenue and 75th Street). In a departure from its customary presentation, the collection at Frick Madison will be organized chronologically and by region. The treasured pieces on display include paintings and sculptures by Bellini, Clodion, Gainsborough, Rembrandt, Turner, Vermeer and Whistler. Renovation of the collection’s permanent home is expected to be completed within two years.

The museum's permanent collection features works that span from the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century, and include renowned artists like Manet, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Goya, Degas and Turner, among other masters. The collection also includes several permanent galleries, as well as the Portico Gallery, which showcases sculpture, ceramics and decorative arts. Along with the artworks, the mansion itself is a sight to behold. It once belonged to steel tycoon Henry Clay Frick and sits along Fifth Avenue across the street from  Central Park .

Metropolitan Opera House Metropolitan Opera House

Stroll through the courtyard of the Metropolitan Opera House even if you're not going inside for a performance. Every element of this opulent building – from the limestone architecture, to the lobby's glittering chandelier, to the acoustics in the concert hall – is gorgeous. Travelers call this opera house a feast for the eyes and ears. Tickets are notoriously expensive (as much as several hundred dollars for the best seats), but the sticker shock evaporates quickly if you're into performing arts. You can try to score a same-day ticket at a discounted rate, plus there are discounts for senior citizens.

The Metropolitan Opera House features spring performances by the American Ballet Theatre and fall and winter performances by the Met Opera Company. Showtimes and ticket prices vary by performance and seating, so check the Met Opera's website for additional details. You'll find the opera house at Lincoln Center Plaza on Manhattan's Upper West Side – take the 1 train to 66th Street.

Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall

It's where Ella Fitzgerald pined for the man she loved, the Rolling Stones couldn't get no satisfaction and Lady Gaga had a "Bad Romance." Among performers, there's no New York concert venue that's quite like Radio City Music Hall. Not only is it the largest indoor theater in the world, its marquee spans a full city block. Opened in 1932, the theater is a New York City Landmark. Today, the theater welcomes musical performers like Ben Platt and Lil Nas X, as well as comedians like Chris Rock.

If you're in town any dates between November and January, consider attending the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which stars the Rockettes. According to recent visitors who attended a show, there's not a bad seat in the house. If you're not able to attend a performance, consider signing up for the hourlong Radio City Stage Door Tour. The guided tour includes stops at areas of the historic venue not typically seen by the public, such as Radio City’s secret apartment, The Roxy Suite. You'll also an enjoy an in-depth history lesson about the stage and its iconic art deco design. The tour concludes with a meet-and-greet with a Radio City Rockette. Tours are offered daily starting at 9:30 a.m.; tickets cost $42 per adult and $38 per kid 12 and younger.

The Battery The Battery free

Also known as The Battery, this 25-ace park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island, and offers a green respite from the steel and concrete of lower Manhattan. The park, named after artillery batteries that protected the settlement in the 17th century, is popular with visitors because of its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty .

The park is home to perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm and a unique carousel, known as the SeaGlass Carousel. On the carousel, riders sit within iridescent fish and glide through a 360-degree aquatic adventure. The carousel’s bioluminescent design honors the waterfront site as well as another landmark, the Castle Clinton, one of the country’s earliest aquariums.

Coney Island Coney Island

Known as the "the People's Playground," this famous amusement area in Brooklyn has witnessed an illustrious past. In the early 1900s, Coney Island enticed New Yorkers to visit with its bathing pavilions, seaside resorts and amusement park. The Great Depression took its toll on the fun-loving spot, causing many attractions to close. But after years of economic instability, Coney Island has reclaimed its place on the Brooklyn map, with a fresh roster of eateries and entertainment (including a July Fourth hot dog-eating contest and an annual Mermaid Parade ) found along the boardwalk. Coney Island now features several separate amusement parks, as well as a museum, which hosts a variety of exhibits and shows.

According to recent visitors, Coney Island is a worthwhile trip in the summer if you have the time and are traveling with young kids who would enjoy the rides. If you're not up for indulging your inner thrill-seeker, you can also walk along the beach, which spans nearly 3 miles and features several sports courts, as well as playgrounds. A walk along the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk is just as memorable, according to recent visitors.

Chrysler Building Chrysler Building free

Technically, the Chrysler Building is an office building open Monday through Friday, but you don't need to go inside to appreciate its aesthetic appeal. Recent visitors praised the building's unique architectural style (though a few wished you could still go inside to admire its intricate lobby and elevators).

Built in 1930, the Chrysler had a short-lived run as the tallest building in the city, before it was usurped of its title by the Empire State Building . Nevertheless, this 1,046-foot-high skyscraper remains a favorite among New Yorkers for its classic art deco style. And unlike the Empire State, at this site you won't need an expensive entry ticket, a strong stomach to stand soaring heights or patience for long lines to see what all the fuss is about. You can behold the building's menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan. Though the lobby is currently closed to visitors, there have been talks of building an observation deck, though none is available at this time.

Quattrone To Tour US-Mexico Border In Visit This Week

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone will be getting a close look at the activity on the U.S.-Mexico border during a multi-day visit this week.

Quattrone has been invited by Mark Dannels, sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, to “come down and see firsthand what they are encountering.” The county’s top law enforcement official will be briefed by officials Wednesday before taking part in border patrols over two days in and around Tombstone, a city in the southeastern portion of the state.

Quattrone is leaving for Arizona today and will return Friday.

Dannels is chair of the Border Security Committee with the National Sheriffs’ Association of which Quattrone is a member.

Earlier this month, Quattrone took part in the association’s winter conference in Washington, D.C. He was part of a group that heard from a handful of officials on a range of topics, including the southern border and Israel-Gaza conflict.

In a statement, the New York State Sheriffs’ Association said Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond, the group’s president, “expressed grave concerns about national security threats highlighted by (FBI Director Christopher) Wray, particularly at the southern border.”

It was from that briefing by Wray during the D.C. trip that Sheriff Richard Jones of Butler County, Ohio, later addressed a number of national security concerns in a video that was widely shared.

“He was at the same meeting I was at and had a little different take on what’s happening,” Quattrone said of Jones’ comments afterward.

Quattrone said he has had a chance to discuss the U.S.-Mexico border situation with Dannels and looked forward to getting a firsthand look this week.

He acknowledged what has become a highly charged topic in the country.

Regarding the border, he said, “I think there’s a difference between our immigration policies and then our illegal border crossings. There’s two separate issues there.”

He referenced a comment from a public information officer with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office who said “much of the crime that’s happening as a result of the border crossings” are being facilitated by U.S. citizens taking advantage of people once they enter the country.

There’s also the human trafficking component.

“That’s where a big part of my interest is with the amount of human trafficking that has been going on, honestly for many years,” Quattrone said. “But, it seems that as of late, more of the public are starting to understand that and understand that’s a reality even here in Chautauqua County.”

Locally, the sheriff noted there have been three to four recent arrests tied to human trafficking.

“A lot of times it’s tied to the drug trade, but not always,” he said. “Sometimes these individuals are coming across the border looking for a better place — not ill-intentioned — but being taken advantage of by those who are in the States already.”

In December, the U.S. the Attorney’s Office announced a four-count federal indictment charging a Dunkirk man with forced labor, kidnapping of a minor and the transportation of a minor for the purpose of illegal sexual activity.

Augusto Mateo Francisco has been accused of facilitating the illegal entry of Guatemalan migrants into the U.S. before providing them farm work and housing in the Dunkirk area.

In a news release late last year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Francisco charged the migrants for their housing, rides to work and for other items. He would also take a cut of the wages they earned working at the farms.

The north county man was accused of abducting a minor in May 2020. He reportedly took her to a trailer in Ripley where she was held for nearly two weeks until she was rescued by police.

Following her rescue, the minor and her mother fled to Georgia. However, Francisco allegedly followed them and kidnapped the minor, bringing her back to Western New York, where he unlawfully held her for several more days until she was again rescued by police.

Jennifer Lopez Goes Full 'Jenny from the Block' with Hats, Chains and Fur for This Is Me…Now Press Tour

Lopez turned New York City into her personal runway in Saint Laurent, Alaïa, Rabanne and more while promoting her new album

Lionel Hahn/WireImage;Gotham/GC Images;James Devaney/GC Images

  • Jennifer Lopez sets out on N.Y.C. press tour for her new album, This Is Me...Now, and makes it a fashion show with multiple designer looks.
  • The studio album is Lopez's ninth and is a follow-up to her 2002 record, This Is Me... Then.
  • Lopez's latest music project is accompanied by a star-studded Amazon Prime Video short film of the same name, plus a 34-date string of North American arena concerts set for this summer.

You best believe that when Jennifer Lopez unveils a new project, she's embarking on a glamorous press tour to promote it.

We saw her do it when The Mother dropped on Netflix last May (she delivered on six fierce looks ) and at Paris Fashion Week (no announcement here, just Lopez doing the most with four outfit changes ).

Now that her latest project, This Is Me...Now — the follow-up album to her 2002 record, This Is Me...Then — is finally out in the world, Lopez, 54, is pulling out all the style stops in New York City to celebrate.

Stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn curated a wardrobe of dreams for the "Hummingbird" singer, who seemingly reverted back to her Jenny from the Block days with lots of Y2K-inspired outfits this month.

In just six days, the actress (who was also just named a co-chair of the 2024 Met Gala ) managed to pull off seven different looks — and we've got them all here! Scroll through to see the Lopez fashion we can't get enough of.

Shooting for the Stars

John Salangsang/Shutterstock

This celestial fashion moment at the This Is Me Now: A Love Story premiere was likely written in Lopez's Feb. 13 horoscope.

As the producer, co-writer and star of the Amazon Prime Video short film accompanying her album, Lopez wore a look that translated her star power quite literally.

Her gown of choice: a Zuhair Murad design with a plunging velvet bodice and detached sleeves, plus a floor-length skirt featuring all 12 of the zodiac signs embroidered with silver embellishments. Her sun sign, Leo, was front and center.

Bundled in Luxury

Gotham/GC Images

Sure you've heard of boots with the fur, but what about stilettos with the fur? Lopez toured all over Manhattan (presumably in her This Is Me...Now branded van) sporting the latter.

On Feb. 15, Lopez struck her fiercest pose outside the View studio in a Saint Laurent fur coat (pictured on the right). Underneath all that luxury? A plunging beige Rabanne jumpsuit with metallic fringe and waist cutouts, gold platforms and a double-chain necklace.

She busted out another fur coat (seen on the left) on Feb. 16, pairing it with a gray hoodie, micro leather shorts worn over tights and inches-high slingback heels for a cool street style effect.

You Can't Top This!

James Devaney/GC Images;Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC Images

It's rare to see Lopez covering up her Hollywood-level hair (who can blame her?). So, when we spotted her in two headwear-centered outfits on Feb. 15, we dropped everything.

Earlier in the day, Lopez brought Parisian flair to the Big Apple with a plaid beret, which she wore with a violet fur coat, Alaïa suit and cutoff leather gloves. Emily in Paris vibes? Oui!

She later made her way to the Bronx, her old neighborhood, and ditched the preppy chapeau for a cool leather cap. She paired this one with an archival midnight blue jumpsuit and coat by Donna Karan and Marli necklaces. " She’s still Jenny From The Block ," her stylist Haenn wrote of the nostalgic 'fit.

Glam in All Ways

Jason Howard/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images;Todd Owyoung/NBC via Getty

These two looks exemplify how diverse Lopez's style is.

She can go from Today on Feb. 15 dressed in a business-forward blouse, made sexy with a leather pencil skirt and dominatrix boots , to swinging the other direction in a neon pink party gown on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a day later.

I visited Primark, one of Europe's biggest retail chains, for the first time and I can see why it's taking over the US

  • I visited Primark, an Irish fast-fashion chain, in New York in January.
  • I thought it was only a clothing store, so I was shocked to see luggage, beauty, and home goods.
  • Now I understand why more and more Primarks are opening around the US.

Insider Today

One of the biggest retail chains across Europe is Primark. In the United Kingdom alone, there are 191 locations.

The chain was founded in Ireland in 1969, and now there are 400 locations across the globe, with a goal of 530 stores by 2026, according to the brand .

The first US location opened in 2015 in Boston. Almost 10 years later, there are 16 stores, but Primark aims to open 60 by 2026, it announced in 2021.

I love a good discount store, like Dollar Tree or Five Below , but I didn't know what to expect from Primark — which has been called the " Costco of clothes " by analysts — except that my friends who studied abroad in London during college loved its low prices.

New York's Roosevelt Field location opened in November 2022, and spans 44,290 square feet of retail space across two floors, Long Island Business News reported.

I decided to visit in January after the holiday rush. Here's what I thought of the experience.

I've never been to Primark before, but when I heard a location had opened in my local mall in Garden City, New York, I had to check it out.

tour in new york city

I was immediately struck by how large the space was. I found out later that it had taken over a Bloomingdale's Furniture location.

tour in new york city

When I walked in, I was presented with these mesh baskets, which were larger than the typical store basket.

tour in new york city

But I opted for a wheeled basket, something I'd first encountered at Five Below and appreciated.

tour in new york city

This Primark has two floors, with the first floor containing Womens, Home, Lingerie, Beauty, and the cashier, among other things. Mens and Kids are on the second floor.

tour in new york city

One of the first displays I saw was a collaboration between Primark and Paula Echevarría, a Spanish model and actress.

tour in new york city

The jeans from this collab, which had elastic waistbands, were $22. The full collection includes cardigans, coats, leggings, joggers, hats, and more.

tour in new york city

Source: Primark

The section behind the collab displayed accessories. I spotted jewelry, socks, scarves, scrunchies, and other items.

tour in new york city

I was drawn to the baseball caps, which were just $4. I decided to snag a white one, similar to a $58 Alo Yoga Off-Duty cap I lost last summer.

tour in new york city

Crossbody bags were on sale for $6, down from $11. This clearance sign became a familiar sight.

tour in new york city

Primark manages to keep its prices so low partly because it relies on volume sales and doesn't have an e-commerce business. You can browse items online but have to shop in-store.

tour in new york city

Source: Business Insider

I thought this was a solid dupe for some of the more expensive crossbody bags out there. I already have a couple, so I didn't purchase it.

tour in new york city

I also saw a sequined bag from the Rita Ora x Primark collab, which was released in September and consists of "169 pieces across knitwear, denim, tailoring, casualwear and outerwear, along with accessories and shoes," Women's Wear Daily reported.

tour in new york city

Source: Women's Wear Daily

I also spotted the first of many items from the Disney at Primark collection, including accessories featuring the character Stitch from "Lilo & Stitch."

tour in new york city

There were also bags covered with Donald Duck. One of the mini bags cost $12.

tour in new york city

I headed across the floor to the Travel Shop, which displayed suitcases and travel accessories, like $8 neck pillows.

tour in new york city

I had no idea Primark sold luggage — and moderately priced luggage to boot. These were $65.

tour in new york city

I saw Stitch again on a $60 suitcase. At this point, I needed to know what the obsession was with Stitch. It turns out this is a new collection released in January, but the first Stitch collection was released in 2016.

tour in new york city

Source: License Global

And there he was again, on eye masks, small backpacks, neck pillows, and other small accessories.

tour in new york city

In the technology section, I saw a Stitch AirTag holder, which I purchased for $3. There were also phone cases, chargers, and AirPod cases.

tour in new york city

Next to the travel items was the home section, which had pillows, glassware, and other home goods.

tour in new york city

There was also a huge fake-flowers selection. One of the smaller bouquets cost just $2.

tour in new york city

This display held room sprays and candles.

tour in new york city

And no section would be complete without a giant display of Stitch goodies. There was no Lilo to be found, though.

tour in new york city

The middle of the store was dedicated to clothes. This section, labeled "Tailoring," was selling $7 blouses. Some items seemed thin, like they might rip, but that's not uncommon for fast fashion — if I wanted office-appropriate attire without Loft or J. Crew prices, I'd check here.

tour in new york city

Behind it was this display marked "Jersey," which contained basic sweaters and sweatshirts made of jersey that were priced at $12. Again, they felt a little thin, but they were soft to the touch.

tour in new york city

There were graphic T-shirts all over the place. The "Harry Potter" one on the bottom left was $14.

tour in new york city

There was also a ton of "Barbie" merch, like this $26 oversize tee.

tour in new york city

The Disney love continued throughout the store.

tour in new york city

There was a comprehensive selection of "Lion King" pajamas and accessories.

tour in new york city

I moved on to Leisurewear, which seemed to take inspiration from basics found at higher-priced places like Alo Yoga or Lululemon.

tour in new york city

I came across this cozy $20 sweater. It was warm and I liked the color — I snapped it up.

tour in new york city

The Activewear section included workout gear like leggings and sports bras, which were $15. But there didn't seem to be a large size range in this section from what I could see.

tour in new york city

There were many Valentine's Day items in the adjoining Lingerie section. It reminded me of Victoria's Secret.

tour in new york city

I saw different types of shapewear, as well.

tour in new york city

As I continued my large loop of the first floor, Beauty was up next. The foundation I found was $7, while bronzer was just $2, which shocked me. Not even drugstore makeup is that cheap.

tour in new york city

But some items were broken, like this eyeshadow palette. I found a similar issue during a recent visit to TJ Maxx. I'll stick to Sephora and Ulta for my makeup needs.

tour in new york city

The last section before I headed upstairs was Shoes.

tour in new york city

The sneaker dupes were solid. These Nike-esque black-and-white sneakers and the Converse look-alikes were both $10.

tour in new york city

Primark also sold a cheaper version of the trendy cowboy boots I see everywhere on the streets of New York. These were just $30.

tour in new york city

I tried them on, but I didn’t love the fit. However the quality was nicer than I was expecting for $30.

tour in new york city

These boots, which are similar to Uggs, were on sale for $5.

tour in new york city

Before I spent too much time ogling shoes I didn't need, I headed upstairs. I don't have kids, so I didn't look too closely, but there seemed to be a large selection of kids' clothing and shoes.

tour in new york city

There was also a Baby section.

tour in new york city

Also upstairs was the Mens section. I spotted a $16 shirt and $6 shorts — apparently, it's still summer in the Primark Mens section, even though it was a chilly January day.

tour in new york city

Collared shirts were priced at $14 each.

tour in new york city

It was time for me to try items on. A mirror told me the store had free WiFi, which I appreciated — this mall has famously terrible phone service.

tour in new york city

The changing rooms weren't fully separated by gender. There was a women's section but also a space for any gender.

tour in new york city

There were multiple mirrors in the stall.

tour in new york city

I tried on a few things — cargo pants that were too small, a dress that bunched weirdly, a trench coat that was too big and too dark — but I only liked this $20 cropped Giants hoodie.

tour in new york city

There were registers with cashiers, but I preferred to use the self-checkout feature.

tour in new york city

Before I left, I found a trench coat I liked way more than the first one I tried. This one was lighter and shorter. I ended up going back and purchasing it for $42.

tour in new york city

Overall, I spent $85 on two sweatshirts, a trench coat, and the AirTag holder. For a comparison, a trench coat at Abercrombie alone costs $160.

tour in new york city

I was pleased with my Primark experience. It's a one-stop shop for anyone looking for discounted clothes, accessories, and home goods. I could come here and get anything I needed, for the most part. I'll be coming back soon.
