‘Great inspiration’: Secret Garden Tour of La Jolla returns May 20
The event, featuring six or seven gardens — depending on the option purchased — also offers a party the night before. Proceeds will benefit the La Jolla Historical Society.

Despite the 1960s theme (in honor of the La Jolla Historical Society’s 60th anniversary), the gardens that will be featured in the upcoming Secret Garden Tour of La Jolla have inspirations from the 1920s to 1990s.
The two-day event, presented by the Historical Society, starts with a Friday soiree at 6 p.m. May 19 at a private La Jolla home, followed by the main event starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20. On the day of the tour, the Secret Garden Boutique will be open to the public on the Wisteria Cottage grounds at 780 Prospect St.
The garden locations are kept secret until the day of the tour but will span the 92037 ZIP code, with properties in Bird Rock, Muirlands, The Village and more. Thus, each is “a little different … with its plantings and its themes,” event chairwoman Meg Davis said.

The event offers two options: a self-guided tour of six gardens that can be viewed in any order, and a Platinum Tour that includes an exclusive seventh garden, plus transportation with a docent and lunch.
This year’s Platinum Tour has been modified to provide lunch in the middle of the tour instead of starting the tour with a brunch. “We will start the day at a convenient location in The Village and folks will head off and visit several gardens and then break for lunch at a historic property in The Village,” said La Jolla Historical Society Executive Director Lauren Lockhart. “And then at the end of the final tour, you will end up back at the first location, which is walking distance from Wisteria Cottage.”
Calling the tour a source of “great ideas and great inspiration” for what guests can do in their own gardens, Davis said her favorite garden has been on the tour before but the homeowners “have put a lot of work into [it] over the years. People that have been on the tour will see what they’ve done and where they have taken the garden. They did some remodeling on the house to accommodate the garden, and there are a lot of personal touches. So it is very creative and really beautiful.”
Lockhart said one of her favorites is a garden focused on drought-tolerant plants. “It feels really lush and full and has interesting sculptural elements,” she said. “It has a modern aesthetic, and I think people will be surprised by that one.
“A number of the garden locations have a really rich history of La Jolla embedded in their site. So we are excited to share that history as part of the garden experience.”
As in past years, artists will paint in each garden and musicians will welcome guests and help set the ambience. Each location also will feature a tabletop display that complements the garden.
— Lauren Lockhart, La Jolla Historical Society executive director
Leading up to the tour will be a “reimagined” Friday-night garden party, also with a ‘60s theme.
The intimate gathering will include hors d’oeuvres, wine and music from the Gand Band, composed of La Jolla residents and historic-home owners Joan and Gary Gand .
“It will be in a beautiful Mid-Century Modern house with amazing views and will feature classic cocktails from the 1960s,” Davis said. “We will encourage people to dress in ... clothing from the early ‘60s to the late ‘60s. There is so much going on that night.”
The party also will serve as the kickoff to a silent auction that ends at the conclusion of the tour. A new focus for the auction will be “special tours and unique experiences you can’t get anywhere else,” Lockhart said.
Lockhart called the Secret Garden Tour “one of our most important fundraisers,” with proceeds helping to fund Historical Society programming.
“We love that in addition to all the attendees experiencing the gardens, they help us sustain our work all year long,” she said. “The revenue goes to our free public programs and our exhibitions that are offered with free admission. It is vital to our organization’s success.”
The Secret Garden Boutique, open to the public with free admission throughout the day May 20, will have gardening accessories, plants and gifts by local artisans available for purchase. Because the event falls on World Bee Day, many of the crafts and supplies will center on the importance of bees to local and global ecosystems.
Tickets for the Friday-night Secret Garden Party are $75, or $65 when purchased with a Platinum Tour ticket.
Self-guided tour tickets are $55 in advance and $65 the day of the event. Platinum Tour tickets are $150 in advance and are not offered the day of the event. Historical Society members get $10 off any tour ticket option.

Confirmed: Secret Garden Tour Tickets
Thank you for purchasing tickets to PAAM’s 2023 Secret Garden Tour, held on Sunday, July 16 from 10am-3pm.
While we don’t reveal the exact location of the tour until the morning-of, we can tell you that PAAM ( 460 Commercial Street ) is the approximate mid-way point. The total distance of the tour is 1.1-miles, and the walk from the parking lot to Garden 1 is 1-mile.
A few points to note:
TICKET PICK-UP, PARKING, AND TRANSPORTATION
Ticket booklets are available to be picked up and purchased at the parking lots (cash and check only), PAAM (cash, check, and cards), and at Garden 1, the location for which we will announce on our Facebook and Instagram pages on Sunday at 9:45am (cash and check only).
We are again offering free, first-come first-served parking at 94 Harry Kemp Way and across the street at 56 Howland Street (BY&D Insurance). One small change: the Registration Table, where you pick up your ticket booklet, will move across the street from its prior location to the much shadier lot at 56 Howland Street.
If the parking lot is full by the time you arrive, you can pick up your ticket from a volunteer and then go park your car elsewhere before beginning the tour ( Parking in Provincetown ). Street parking can be found by those with keen eyes or incredible luck.
PAAM staff and volunteers offer a “shuttle service” in their personal vehicles between the parking lot, PAAM, and Garden 1. We are delighted to announce that this year a fleet of pedi-cabs, donated by b\well, will also be offering Secret Garden Tour shuttle service!
Keep in mind that the busiest time to take a shuttle (and therefore longest wait time) tends to be from 10-11:30am.
There will be shuttles and pedi-cabs running from PAAM back to the parking lot until 3:15PM.
REST AND REFRESHMENT
We encourage you to visit PAAM (460 Commercial Street) where there will be a refreshment table sponsored by Friends of Provincetown Parks and Gardens, as well as restrooms, A/C, and five art exhibitions, including Gems from the Permanent Collection , which features sketches by Edward Hopper. Your ticket grants you free admission to the Museum until closing at 5pm.
Please bring your own water bottle. We’ll have water-filling stations throughout the tour in addition to the fountain at the Museum, but will no longer be distributing plastic water bottles.
The forecast for Sunday is showing possible rain showers, so please consider bringing an umbrella or wearing rain-gear. The tour happens rain or shine.
This tour has some steep driveways and stairs, please wear comfortable shoes. There are many beautiful homes and gardens along the route that are not technically on the tour, but be sure to marvel at their beauty regardless!
If you have any concerns about accessibility, please reach out to Lesley ( [email protected] , 508-487-1750 x112) who will discuss the physical route with you in greater detail.

“Experience the magic of The Secret Garden ” Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s classic, The Secret Garden , blossoms anew in this enchanting musical by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman and composer Lucy Simon. When young Mary Lennox loses her parents to a cholera outbreak in India, she is sent to live with her uncle, hermit Archibald Craven, who lives in an imposing, secluded manor on the British heath. Since her aunt Lily’s death, Mary’s uncle has pushed away his surviving loved ones, leaving his bedridden son, Colin, alone. Sickly Colin, hidden away in the depths of the manner, bears the guilt of his mother’s death on his crippled shoulders. When Mary discovers her Aunt Lily’s hidden garden, locked shut and overgrown with vines, she is determined to revive the beauty that once was. Surrounded by spirits from the past, who both warn and welcome her, determined Mary begins to peel away the layers of sadness that cover the house and the garden, showing us the power that “one small girl” can have when she “wants things to grow”. Winner of 4 TONY Awards.

Theater Review: THE SECRET GARDEN (Revival Production at the Ahmanson Theatre)
by Marc Wheeler on February 27, 2023
in Theater-Los Angeles
THE SECRET’S OUT: THIS GARDEN’S IN BLOOM
It’s been almost a year since Ahmanson Theatre ushered in spring with the national tour of Hadestown . This season (thank ye, Fates!), spring has come again with a lush new production of the 1991 Broadway musical The Secret Garden . Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 English children’s novel of the same name, the musical features a 10-year-old orphaned girl as its protagonist. The musical is certainly family-friendly, as evidenced by the well- dressed and behaved children in attendance on Opening Night. Yet this dark-and-moody, Warren Carlyle -directed and choreographed production is more in the vein of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (which premiered three years prior to Garden ’s 1990 pre-Broadway run) than it is a “kids’ show” in the vein of, say, Frozen . Regardless, the result is a gorgeous, sophisticated work that—to hearts and steps—will surely bring spring.
With lyrics and a Tony Award-winning book by Marsha Norman , Garden tells the tale of a 20th century girl, Mary Lennox ( Emily Jewel Hoder ), who becomes an orphan when her family dies of cholera. In this production, cholera itself is curiously played by a single actress, Kelley Dorney, who—like a color guard twirler—whirls her red-death upon them. Mary is shipped away from British India to the moors of Yorkshire, England where she’s to live with her uncle Archibald (a powerhouse Derrick Davis ) to whom she’s a perfect stranger. Upon arrival, she finds his manners as cold as his manor. His distance, we discover, is attributed to the loss of his beloved late wife, Lily ( Sierra Boggess ), whose ghostly presence is as haunting and beautiful as the actress’s ethereal vibrato. Mary soon befriends Martha, a motherly, thick-accented chambermaid (a lovely Julia Lester ) as well as a white-bearded old crank named Ben (an endearing Mark Capri ). She’s also taken under the wing of Dickon (a handsome, honey-voiced John-Michael Lyles ), who helps her communicate with birds and cultivate, as the title suggests, a secret garden whose capacity for growth far transcends the literal.
As pre-teen Mary, Hoder carries the show with gusto. Sure, Mary can be a privileged, petulant brat at times, but she’s more adult than she should have to be. In the face of adversity, she keeps a stiff upper lip. If there’s anything missing from Hoder’s performance, it’s a moment to crack. Let’s face it, the girl just lost her whole family to cholera and now she’s living with a bunch of strangers: how does she deal with the pain when no one’s looking? Perhaps the book, or director, doesn’t want to go there, but for my money, it’s a missed opportunity.
Lucy Simon ’s score (orchestrated by Danny Troob , conducted by Dan Redfeld , and with additional arrangements by music supervisor Rob Berman ) is plush and sumptuous, bordering on the operatic. Because of the spiritual, even multicultural, nature of the work, Simon lures us with rich, haunting melodies that are quenchingly reprised. Standout numbers include “Come to My Garden” and “How Could I Ever Know,” a powerful duet between Archibald and his late wife. In “A Bit of Earth,” wherein Mary asks her uncle for some earth to garden, I couldn’t help but notice how Norman’s lyrics stand in contrast to Simon’s near-sounding “bitter earth” upon which a grieving Archibald now stands.
As solid as the cast is (there’s not a weak link in the bunch), the book is unnecessarily complex. Complicating matters is the production’s colorblind casting. As appealing as it is to see diverse human hues populating a stage—like flowers in a garden—when casting choices are confusing, historically inaccurate, or work against the art or storyworld itself, one has to weigh their merits. For instance, when we discover that Archibald’s brother, Neville ( Aaron Lazar ), was secretly in love with and heartbroken by Lily; and we discover in Act One [small spoiler] a mysterious child named Colin (a feisty, scene-stealing Reese Levine ) whose race matches Neville’s and Lily’s—not Archibald’s (uh-oh!)—well, you can see where my mind went. Does any of this potential drama pan out? Nope. But when audiences are unsure why something’s cast the way it is, we don’t know what to take seriously—or not. Consequently, we may invent fictions to make sense of the director’s (possibly non-art-related) choices, distracting us from the real story.
Visually, the work is poetry. Jason Sherwood ’s set is minimalist and abstract, taking up just enough space to leave room for our imaginations. Set pieces and actors move in and out swiftly, elegantly, like ballet dancers, hitting their marks with precision. Meanwhile, a giant “swirl,” lit gorgeously by Ken Billington and Brian Monahan , ascends to the rafters as candles Phantom-ly fill a ghostly stage. The look is classy, if playful, and eventually, bright. Ann Hould-Ward ’s costumes are well-suited, proper. Touching them up nicely are Victoria Tinsman ’s wigs and makeup. Sound designer Dan Moses Schreier fills the air with windy chills or the sweet bird sounds of a garden. Offering distinctions in class and region, Joel Goldes ‘ dialect coaching is top notch, as evidenced by the cast’s vocal deliveries.
At its heart, The Secret Garden is sweet, sentimental. Even if the book complicates it, the story’s simple—yet richly so. Who hasn’t been that child (or adult) yearning to cultivate, or be grown? And who hasn’t been, or won’t be, that adult (or child, like Mary) who learns all too well the role of death in this cycle? From winter comes spring; from spring, winter—and all that’s in-between. If you’re looking for something to lift you, this bit of earth may be the grounding you need.

I agree, Marc, it’s a lovely production with thrilling design and performances. Additionally, I completely agree that the (still) complicated book was made even more confusing by the colorblind casting. It was somewhat easier to see Martha (white) and Dickon (black) as siblings, but can’t the producers keep the same color in the same family for the audience’s sake (if not fer crissake)?
Oh, and another EGREGIOUS oddity: Mary’s guardian and uncle Archibald is a hunchback (it even says so in the script), but the hunch is mysteriously missing on actor Derrick Davis while his brother, Neville, walks with a cane!
Part of our sympathy for Archibald arises (or should arise) because a beautiful woman fell in love with him, and then died, leaving this poor deformed man to possibly never find love again. Post-show, one confused audience member (there were plenty) wondered if the producers thought that a hump would offend the hunchback or entire physically different community. Whatever the “woke” reasons, I feel this MUST be attended to before the show moves to Broadway (which it will).
In the words of Igor: “What hump?”
My two cents:
While I preferred the set design of the original to the revival’s, I was pleased to see a show with no projections.

A garden tour is an opportunity to step into a different world – one where botanical colors, shapes, and fragrances command attention, summon the imagination, and lead to an escape from the world of the ordinary.
For two decades La Jolla Historical Society’s Secret Garden Tour has provided the opportunity to step into the extraordinary world of La Jolla’s private gardens. The Secret Garden Tour is much anticipated on the community’s spring calendar, and leaves a legacy throughout the year with financial support for the Society’s exhibitions and educational programs
In addition to the plants and landscaping, the Tour includes opportunities to explore unique designs and in the company of garden enthusiasts and friends. La Jolla’s tour often includes historic homes and examples of unique architecture, and the gardens are made special with the presence of live musicians, plein air artists, and dining table designs. On the lawn of the Society’s Wisteria Cottage, the Garden Boutique showcases merchants with items of interest to gardeners and homeowners.
The Secret Garden tour began more than 20 years ago as an undertaking of a small group under the chairmanship of Linda Marrone and Susan Vandendriesse. Today it runs with multiple committees, dozens of volunteers, and with the help of the Society’s Board of Directors. The day of the Tour brings hundreds of visitors to La Jolla to enjoy the gardens and the restaurants, galleries, and ambiance of the village.
Through the years many La Jolla homeowners have generously opened their gardens for viewing on this special day, providing an enchanting opportunity to visit and experience the charm behind the garden gates.
