Your first year after school is your first real opportunity to shape your future life direction and choose the values you wish to live by.

That’s why we’ve designed the Kivun program, to help you explore your Judaism and Zionism in a positive and non-judgmental environment, and to help you forge your own personal direction.

Kivun will facilitate your personal and religious growth through diverse and challenging experiences, giving an authentic encounter with Israel. It will deepen your understanding of Judaism through relevant and contemporary learning from ancient texts to modern, cutting-edge issues.

Bnei Akiva believes that our learning and personal growth must be matched by a commitment to action - or in other words, Torah Va’Avodah. On Kivun you will become active contributors to Israeli society, making a tangible difference to people and communities.

And Kivun doesn’t end there: our vision is for graduates of Kivun to make a lifelong commitment to giving back to others, through being involved in Bnei Akiva, the wider community and Israel.

  • Leadership Training With our professional guidance‭, ‬and carefully crafted activities and workshops‭, ‬participants develop their own unique leadership‭ ‬skills‭, ‬and the confidence to serve as a personal example‭. ‬Through their own initiative and teamwork they establish and run committees that steer the very course of the program‭, ‬and work on individual and group projects to hone their skills‭. ‬Committees are responsible for many aspects of Mechina life including educational content‭, ‬PR‭, ‬cooking‭, ‬army preparation‭, ‬tiyulim and more‭.‬
  • Torah learning and lifestyle Our learning program teaches a religious Zionist and Modern Orthodox educational philosophy‭. ‬We believe in learning for the sake‭ ‬of growing which makes classes lively‭, ‬positive‭, ‬relevant and involved‭. ‬Topics studied include Torah and Jewish texts‭, ‬tfilla‭, ‬emuna‭, ‬Jewish history‭, ‬Zionism‭, ‬and philosophy‭. ‬You’ll be guided throughout‭, ‬and different levels will be catered for‭. ‬To be a participant on the Mechina‭, ‬you don’t need prior knowledge in Jewish studies‭ ‬‮–‬‭ ‬you just need commitment to learn and to grow‭.‬
  • Community Service As part of the immersion into Israeli society and to contribute to it‭, ‬participants dedicate time to volunteer within a local community‭. ‬Projects include teaching English in schools‭, ‬visiting the elderly‭, ‬working with people with disabilities‭, ‬and agricultural work‭.‬
  • Love of Israel Participants discover Israel both geographically and socially‭, ‬as we encourage them to challenge their pre-existing perceptions‭ ‬of the country and the people‭. ‬They are exposed to all sectors of the Israeli population‭, ‬and develop their own understanding of‭ ‬how the pioneering spirit is still very much alive in contemporary Israel‭. ‬With the Love and connection to the Land of Israel being such a core element of the program‭, ‬our participants grow to become the newest link in the chain of pioneers‭.‬
  • Fitness Camp and Army Preparation We make every effort to ensure that participants going into the IDF have a meaningful service‭. ‬Therefore‭, ‬there are classes and‭ ‬activities carefully designed to deal with a wide range of subjects relating to army service including ethics‭, ‬leadership and structure of the IDF‭. ‬Twice a week there are physical training classes for all participants‭. ‬Classes are run by professionals as well as by participants‭. ‬Participants gain self-empowerment through coping with physically challenging situations‭, ‬and develop physical fitness and mental stability‭.‬
  • Hebrew Learning Throughout the program‭, ‬our international participants take part in our own dedicated‭ ‬“Ulpan”‭ ‬‮–‬‭ ‬intensive Hebrew learning course‭, ‬with 2‭ ‬classes a week divided according to 3‭ ‬different levels‭: ‬beginner‭, ‬intermediate and advanced‭. ‬However the best Hebrew learning is through their daily interactions with their Israeli peers at the Mechina with whom‭ ‬they share everything‭.‬
  • Jewish Peoplehood The Mechina Olamit strives to bolster the link between Israel’s Jews and Diaspora Jewry through their common historical‭, ‬religious‭, ‬and cultural heritage‭. ‬We actively work to instill within‭ ‬our participants a desire for mutual action and commitment to a stronger and positive Jewish future‭.‬
  • Seminars, Camp, and Trips There are regular three to six-day seminars and trips around the country to expose the participants to a wide array of topics and build an intimate familiarity with land of Israel‭. ‬Seminars include‭: ‬Israeli society‭, ‬Shoah‭, ‬Zionism‭, ‬Jewish Peoplehood‭, ‬Gush‭ ‬Etzion‭, ‬Navigation‭, ‬Army preparation‭, ‬Desert Survival and Chovek Israel‭ ‬‮–‬‭ ‬the final two-week trip from North to South of Israel‭ ‬planned entirely by participants‭. ‬Participants help plan and run many aspects of each trip and seminar‭, ‬including building educational elements‭, ‬accommodation‭, ‬cooking‭, ‬navigating‭, ‬and guest speakers‭. ‬
  • Safety and Security We understand that applicants and their families may have concerns about participant safety over the course of the program, and about the dynamic security situation in Israel. Your safety & security is our number one priority. As an approved MASA program, all World Bnei Akiva Hachshara Israel programs follow the safety and security guidelines outlined by MASA for all their programs. Please visit the MASA safety page for more information and interactive video with MASA’s Chief Security Officer, Amir Keinan.
  • Health and Wellbeing World Bnei Akiva take our participants’ physical & emotional wellbeing very seriously. Noting the rise in emotional challenges amongst youth, we have commissioned the services and support of “Keshev”- a professional organization in the mental health and wellness field. Keshev provides us a with a wide variety of services including group sessions and one-on-one meetings with participants on topics of mental health such as anxiety, depression, sexuality, eating disorders and more. They provide emergency on-call support to staff, and designated on site hours for any participant who needs extra support mentally or emotionally. Through their team, our participants and staff are offered guidance and support needed, to help them to have an emotionally healthy and safe year. To learn more visit www.keshevcenter.com

Bnei Akiva - a global community

Kivun has been uniquely created to meet your needs as young Jews. Most of the program is with likeminded youth from North America, England, mainland Europe and beyond. Additionally, significant parts of the year have been designed to cross paths with other World Bnei Akiva Hachshara programs from around the world.  This means you will have the opportunity to learn, hike and celebrate chagim with other young Jews from over 15 different countries; from Australia to Italy and from Uruguay to South Africa. The coming together of future Jewish leaders from so many different countries and backgrounds will enrich your year and give you friends from around the world.

Journey to Poland

Kivun participants have the special opportunity of visiting Poland as part of their year with World Bnei Akiva: Hachshara. Starting and ending in Israel, the trip focuses on the experiences of Polish Jewry throughout its history.

You’ll explore the immense and beautiful Jewry of pre-war Poland, dating back 800 years, and you’ll examine the years of the Holocaust by visiting Jewish ghettos, death and labour camps, and other significant sites. The trip is prepared meticulously by our educational team so that the experience is a meaningful one. Whilst in Israel, you’ll prepare for your journey to Poland, and on your return, you’ll deal with processing and concluding the many concepts and issues that the trip covered.

(*The Poland journey, although highly recommended is an optional extra, for an additional cost)

I absolutely loved being able to feel as if I lived as an Israeli, within a group of international students. One of my favorite things was being able to get the real Israeli working experience through my internship, which was with the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. I also really loved being able to grow as a Jew and as a Zionist with other Jewish, Zionist students from around the world, and learning about their cultures. For anyone looking for a program that really makes you feel as if you are an Israeli, I highly recommend Kivun. It is a one-of-a-kind life experience that you won't be able to get any other way.

My year on Kivun has been the best year of my life. I've met the most amazing people and share some incredible experiences with them. I've been able to do so much, I've worked on a Kibbutz, Interned at the Ministry of Health, worked on a National Ambulance Service and learnt about my Jewish history and identity. I've also learnt about myself and grown as a person.

Choosing to go on Kivun was the best decision I ever made because it has positively impacted my life to this day. I created new and meaningful friendships with people from all around the World; developed my Jewish identity and grew massively in my independence, all while exploring, and living in, Eretz Yisrael.

My experience in Kivun has absolutely been incredible and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I have met people from all over the world and have had amazing experiences I will never forget. I have gained independence, learned more about Israel, and integrated into Israeli society. Kivun has given me the opportunity to grow so much and I am so grateful to have chosen this program. It truly has the best to offer and is an experience that will last a lifetime!

My experience on Kivun was full of growth, fun, independence and a love for Judaism and Israel. Throughout the year the different experiences ranging from working on a kibbutz to internships to volunteering to hikes and seminars, guided me through what it means to live in Israel. I came to love Israel even more than I thought possible and my connection to am Yisrael strengthened even more. This program gave me friendship and memories that will last a lifetime.

Obviously, with the world on lockdown, travel is severely restricted and tourism, including educational trips to Israel, has been put on hold. While we cannot predict the future—and updates about travel, quarantine, and restrictions change almost daily—we anticipate travel to Israel to return to normal, somewhat, by the summer of 2021. In the event that it does, the Israel Trip Voucher you earn for completing Olami Inspire Online will be valid for summer 2021, winter 21/22, and summer 2022. We are keeping abreast of the situation and will change this policy if circumstances warrant it.

If you are a graduate of an earlier program and your voucher expired due to the pandemic, don’t worry, all vouchers have been extended for at least a year and will be modified as the situation warrants.

If you have additional questions, please contact  [email protected]

Yes you can. Your time is valuable. It is not unusual to get paid a stipend or to earn a travel grant to research a specific topic or work in a lab. This is similar. And the Israel scholarship is incredible. Depending on the program you choose you earn a travel voucher for an Israel trip that will make your cost either free or as low as $200.

Each week you log into a virtual classroom. Your instructor will be waiting. The other participants will be there as well. You participate and ask questions via chat. You will also answer poll questions, watch videos, take a quiz, and write a short essay each week at the end of each session.

Not a problem. You need to be there—live and in person—for at least 8 of the 10 sessions. You are responsible to submit assignments for all 10 sessions. All sessions are recorded and archived.

No. Not at all. This program is a live, interactive, engaging experience. Your instructor is live and in real time. You will interact and ask questions. It is just like being in a classroom, except it is online.

You will explore some of the most important issues concerning the relevance of Judaism in contemporary life. Some examples include the nature of free will, the intersection of faith and science, the Jewish historical experience, and the Jewish secrets of love and dating. See full cours outline below.

Your instructor is Tzvi Gluckin. He is über-hip. Click  here  to see what he does when he’s not teaching this course. There will also be guest speakers some weeks.

You need to participate—live and in person—for at least 8 of the 10 sessions. The sessions you might miss, you make up by watching the recording of that session. After each session, you need to submit a 2 or 3 paragraph essay discussing what you learned (this is the minimum, you can make your essays as long as you want). You will be asked to answer specific quiz questions as well. All participants are required to meet one-on-one with a local Olami representative in person. You will be contacted once the program is underway to set up a meeting. If no live representative is available in your area, an online meeting will be arranged. Most meetings last about 30 minutes. If a live event (class) is schedule in your area, you must attend. Both the one-on-one meeting and possible live class are program requirements. If Monday nights are not good this semester and you do not think you can show up on time and attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions live and in person, please ask to be put on our list for next semester (there is no penalty for reapplying, we love hearing from you!).

That is correct. In most cases and depending on the program you choose, the Israel voucher we offer covers all charges charged to you by the Israel program you are accepted to. And that includes flight. Depending on the program, you may need to make your way on your own to a hub (like New York or LA), but the round trip ticket to Israel is covered. The program costs are covered as well.

No. Olami will only offer an Israel travel voucher for approved programs. But don’t worry, the list of options is massive and you should find a program that is the right fit for you. See below a list of available options. The list is divided between the $200 programs first, free options, and then other scholarships your voucher is good for.

No it isn’t. Acceptance to an Israel program is up to the particular program you apply to. Each program is unique and has its own criteria. Once you are accepted you let us know. Your Israel trip voucher specifically goes to cover flight and some program costs. Depending on the program you are accepted to, you may need to travel to a hub (like New York or LA) on your own. (The Israel trip voucher can NOT be used to cover additional flights to a hub airport or any other travel/trip related costs).

Redeeming your voucher is easy: choose a trip from the list of approved trips, apply, go through that trips application process, once you are accepted, you let us know. And that is it. In some cases, and depending on the trip you choose, you may be required to complete a second in-person interview with a representative in your area. If this is the case, receiving your voucher will be contingent upon completing this entire interview process. You will be notified if this is applicable.

Olami Inspire Online is open to Jewish students, recent grads, and young professionals, aged 18-28.

Yes you are. Birthright does NOT disqualify you for this opportunity to travel and study in Israel.

Yes, using this Israel trip voucher will disqualify you for Birthright, however, the voucher is good for up to a year. Go on Birthright first and save your voucher for the future.

Depending on the program you did, you may still be eligible for a 3-week Israel trip voucher for a free learning experience. However, if you are already involved with the Maimonides Fellowship or partnering organizations, Olami Inspire Online is probably not the right program for you. Apply to Olami Inspire Online and email us as well for more details.

Olami Inspire Online is able to offer credits via a partnership with the Theological Research Institute (TRI). TRI is accredited by the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS), which is a program of the Board of Regents of The University of the State of New York. Olami Inspire Online’s official course listing is “Ancient Jewish Ideas in the Modern Era.” You can view the complete listing on the NCCRS site here. If you decide to take Olami Inspire Online for credit, you need to take the following steps: Go to the relevant department on campus that signs off on transfer courses and submit the following items: Name of transfer program (Theological Research Institute), name of Accrediting Agency (National College Credit Recommendation Services) Name of desired course to be taken (Ancient Jewish Ideas in the Modern Era). If your university does not accept national accrediting agencies (which is what NCCRS is), TRI courses are also offered via Excelsior College with Accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which should replace the above first two items that you will submit. Once you receive the permissions needed, you enroll online for the course at TRILTD.com You then complete Olami Inspire Online. Upon completion of the course you take a proctored final exam When TRI receives a digital or actual copy of your final, a signed proctor form, and a signed academic honesty form (TRI provides the forms), TRI will send a transcript to your college and the process is complete. Olami Inspire Online is a 3 credit course and your cost is $300 paid to TRI. If your university doesn’t accept NCCRS credits, you will be charged an additional $300 in order for your credits to be processed through Excelsior College (making your total cost $600). Sound confusing? Don’t worry. If you chose this option, we will put you in touch with someone who will guide you through the entire process.

You need a computer and a broadband internet connection. We use the Zoom webinar platform. If you do not have Zoom, you’ll be prompted to create an account when you login for the first session. Do it. You will be sent a link to the online classroom a day or two before the first session.

Yes. Olami Inspire Online is a safe and secure environment.

Yes! Tell them to apply today.

Things to be aware of when choosing your trip

Choose the trip of your choice and your cost is either $200 or FREE depending on the program you choose. Other scholarship options and internship opportunities are available as well.

Acceptance to an Israel program is not guaranteed and is determined exclusively by the particular program you apply to. Each program is unique and has its own criteria.

Your Israel trip voucher specifically goes to cover flight and program tuition ONLY.

Depending on the program you are accepted to, you may need to travel to a hub (like New York or LA) on your own. The Israel trip voucher can not be used to cover additional flights to a hub airport or any other travel or trip-related costs. Some programs may require a refundable deposit to hold your spot; that you purchase travel insurance; or that you pay toward tips or other additional fees. Check with the individual tour provider for details. These costs are not covered by your Olami Inspire Israel trip voucher.

Please note: in addition to Israel, some partnering organizations offer trips to places like Poland, Spain, Costa Rica, and other locations. Your Israel trip voucher is good for Israel trips only.

Also note: these scholarships and costs are for students traveling from North America only. For students from other locations, prices may vary.

VEGAN RABBI TRIP TO ISRAEL

THERE SIMPLY HAS NEVER BEEN AN ISRAEL TRIP LIKE THIS BEFORE! MAGNOLIA ISRAEL TOGETHER WITH THE VEGAN RABBI AKIVA GERSH HAVE CREATED A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY  TO VISIT ISRAEL IN THE FIRST-EVER SUSTAINABLE VEGAN TRIP TO ISRAEL. Instead of visiting the standard tourist sites of the country, we will bring you in-person and up-close with people and organizations who are shaping Israeli society when it comes to sustainability and veganism.

The trip itself will be a reflection of these values; we don't only want to learn about sustainability in Israel, we want to put it into practice! One of the most unique components of the trip is our commitment to reducing carbon emissions along our journey. To this effect, we are making use of public transportation as much as possible and using a tour bus only when absolutely necessary. We are also very consciously keeping our use of paper and plastic to a bare minimum during the trip and using locally-owned hotels and restaurants. These are all ways that Vegan Rabbi and Magnolia Israel are committed to protecting the environment and living and working in line with ancient Jewish laws and values.

WHAT DOES THE TRIP INCLUDE?

🗹  Over 9 days you will meet with Israeli activists and leaders in the vegan movement and see what organizations and start-ups are doing to make Israel, as well as the world, a more sustainable place.

🗹  You will also eat a lot of delicious Israeli vegan food, from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv and beyond.

🗹  You will also discover the natural beauty of Israel with an inspiring sunset coastal walk, a bike ride through the foothills of the Carmel Mountains as well as morning yoga on the beach!

🗹  Throughout the trip, there will be a number of study and discussion sessions with Rabbi Akiva Gersh, the "Vegan Rabbi" , who will be with us throughout the trip, including during our very special Shabbat in the mystical city of Tzfat where, amongst other things, you will explore and experience the Jewish spiritual side of food and eating.

🗹  All food served on the trip will be vegan and kosher.

We can't wait to share this unique experience with you!
