Buy before you fly
Benefits of planning ahead.
It's always a good idea to have some Euros handy for essentials like food, drink, tips and transport when you arrive.
Buying your Euros before you head off means you won’t need to worry about finding an ATM while you’re away. You’ll also be able to avoid any additional withdrawal charges.
It’s worth remembering that foreign exchange rates can go up and down. When you buy your Euros in advance, you can be sure of the rate you are going to get. Withdrawing cash abroad may not give you the same exchange rate.
Get your currency when it’s convenient for you
You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Euros as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.
Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.
Some common questions about the Euro
The Euro is used in a range of European countries. It was created by the European Union in 1999 and launched in 2002, when it replaced the local currencies of most EU member states. So, when you travel to Italy or Spain, you need Euros to spend while you’re there instead of Lira or Peseta.
The Euro is used by a wide range of countries, most of them member states of the European Union – although some non-member countries use it too. If you’re travelling to the following countries, you can expect to use Euros:
- Austria Austria
- Belgium Belgium
- Croatia Croatia
- Cyprus Cyprus
- Estonia Estonia
- Finland Finland
- France France
- Germany Germany
- Greece Greece
- Ireland Ireland
- Italy Italy
- Latvia Latvia
- Luxembourg Luxembourg
- Malta Malta
- The Netherlands The Netherlands
- Portugal Portugal
- Slovakia Slovakia
- Slovenia Slovenia
- Spain Spain
There are also some non-euro member states that have agreed to use the Euro. They are:
- Andorra Andorra
- Monaco Monaco
- San Marino San Marino
- Vatican City Vatican City
Notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros. 500-Euro notes are no longer being printed, but existing banknotes remain legal tender and can continue to be used.
There are eight denominations of Euro coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, plus 1 and 2 Euros. Euro coins have a common side (the tail) and a national side (the head), which features country-specific designs. Regardless of the country of design, the coins can be used anywhere the Euro is accepted.
Euro coins and banknotes were designed by the European Central Bank to be attractive, secure and user-friendly. They all clearly have the amount of money they represent printed as part of the design.
The first series of banknotes was created to celebrate the Ages and styles of Europe and features bridges and buildings that are inspired by European architecture. The second series, called the Europa series, reworked the original designs to include more security features.
From 1 January 2023, Croatia replaced the local currency, the Croatian kuna, with the euro. This means that Croatia is the 20th country to join the eurozone, almost 10 years after initially joining the European Union.
Croatia has also joined the European Union’s borderless Schengen zone, allowing people to travel freely between member countries without going through border controls.

Tesco says price pressures easing as profits soar
- Published 15 minutes ago
Tesco has said price pressures on grocers have eased as it reported bumper sales and profits for the past year.
The UK's biggest supermarket chain said pre-tax profits hit £2.3bn, up from £882m, while sales rose by 4.4% to £68.2bn in the year to 24 February.
The company said price inflation in groceries had "lessened substantially".
However, its boss Ken Murphy said the firm was conscious "things were still difficult for many customers".
Tesco had "worked hard" to cut prices, he said, and "doubled down" on schemes aimed at offering shoppers better value for money, such as its Aldi Price Match offer and Clubcard promotions.
More than 4,000 products were cheaper at the end of the year than at the start, with an average price cut of about 12%, the firm said.
Tesco is the UK's biggest supermarket chain with more than 330,000 employees and a 27.3% share of the grocery market, which Mr Murphy said was growing as customers "respond to the improvements we've made to the value and quality of our products".
Global retail analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence Charles Allen told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the company had done a "lot of work" to keep up with its rivals such as German discounters Aldi and Lidl.
He said that the results were "broadly in line" with expectations, though "just a shade weaker than anticipated".
Looking forward to the coming year, he said things would not get any easier for the retailer.
With increasing staff bills coming in just as inflation - which measures the rate at which prices are rising - is slowing down, he said "you haven't got the same sales boost" from higher prices.

Ex-Tesco man Jason Tarry looks to be just what John Lewis Partnership needs
After years of losses or low profits JLP has picked a chair who has deep experience of retailing at its most brutally competitive
John Lewis staff brace for shake-up as ex-Tesco UK boss named group chair
C halk it up as a mini coup for the John Lewis Partnership. The next chair had to be a nuts-and-bolts operator with recent frontline retail experience, almost everybody agreed, and the employee-owned group has landed someone who fits the bill.
Jason Tarry spent 33 years at Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer by a distance, and is regarded as having put in a successful six-year shift as head of its UK and Irish operations until he quit last autumn. He was there for the fightback after the 2014 accounting scandal, and was in charge during the wild Covid times for supermarkets.
Tarry, say those who know him, is the cuddlier type of ex-Tesco executive (they can exist), which may help in negotiating the partnership’s internal politics and democracy. But, on the safe assumption that you don’t survive as boss of the most important bit of the Tesco empire unless you keep the place brutally competitive, John Lewis couldn’t have done much better on the hiring front. A competitive edge is what the partnership needs after three years of losses and only a small profit last year . The game for the next few years is about the grind of supply chain efficiencies and investment in IT, analytics and customer service.
Tarry, like the incumbent, Dame Sharon White , will be a full-time chair, so there’s an obvious question of where Nish Kankiwala, the chief executive, fits. Giving him the job title a year ago, the first time it has been used at the partnership, made sense if White was to be followed by a non-executive chairman, but that’s not what’s happening. Will Kankiwala now become more of a chief operating officer?
“I’m looking forward to working with the board, Nish and the executive team,” said Tarry blandly in his pre-written statement . One assumes the two men have some sort of understanding on their different roles, but that doesn’t guarantee it will work in practice. Marks & Spencer’s experiment in having a chief executive and co-chief executive didn’t last long.
The more interesting detail in the statement was Tarry’s description of the partnership’s strategy as “clear”. And, yes, it’s definitely clearer since a month ago when White ditched the target of generating 40% of profits from non-retailing activities by 2030. The next question, though, is whether John Lewis, at whatever pace, still wants to build and own a portfolio of 10,000 buy-to-rent flats? Tesco’s recent experience, note, has been about concentrating on its core business and keeping extracurricular adventures to a minimum. That may be part of the reason why it is successful.
At least the build-to-rent distraction isn’t pressing. The priority is ensuring retail discipline in the stores and online, which, to be fair to White and Kankiwala, improved in the past year. History may also be kinder to White than the current reviews: she inherited an overexpanded business with little spare cash five years ago and is handing over an operation that can afford to boost investment to £542m this year, a 70% uplift from last year’s pauper’s ration.
after newsletter promotion
But, when your most recent annual profits were £56m, and your definition of a “sustainable” return is £400m, it makes complete sense to hire a lifer from the top retailing academy. Provided he survives the culture shock, Tarry looks an intriguing hire.

UK's Tesco Forecasts Profit Rise After Building 'Strong Momentum'

LONDON (Reuters) -Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, forecast a further increase in profit in its new financial year as strong demand and new customers helped it to post an 11% jump in 2023/24.
The supermarket group, which has a 27.3% share of Britain's grocery market, up 40 basis points on the year, also said inflationary pressures had "lessened substantially" and it was seeing signs of improving consumer sentiment.
"Customers are choosing to shop more at Tesco, which is reflected in growing market share as they respond to the improvements we've made to the value and quality of our products," said CEO Ken Murphy, noting it now had "strong momentum".
Tesco on Wednesday forecast retail adjusted operating profit, its key profit measure, of "at least" 2.8 billion pounds ($3.55 billion) for its 2024/25 year.
It made 2.76 billion pounds in the year to Feb. 24 2024, slightly ahead of guidance of 2.75 billion pounds and up from 2.49 billion pounds made in the previous year.
Group sales, excluding VAT sales tax and fuel, rose 7.4% to 61.5 billion pounds, with UK like-for-like sales up 7.7%.
The group, whose shares are up 9% over the last year, is benefiting from a strategy of matching the prices of discounter Aldi on key items, and the popularity of its Clubcard loyalty scheme, which provides lower prices for members.
These programmes have been being financed by taking over 1 billion pounds of costs out of the business in the two years to February 2024.
Tesco has also benefited from consumers looking to save money by cooking and entertaining at home rather than dining out, with sales of its "Finest" premium range up 15.7% in the year.
The group also said it would buy back a further 1 billion pounds worth of shares over the next year, having already purchased 1.8 billion pounds since October 2021.
