When will Florida cruise ship ports reopen in the wake of Hurricane Ian?

Gene Sloan

A day after Hurricane Ian slammed into the Florida coast as a Category 4 storm, three home ports for cruise ships in the state — Port Tampa Bay, Jacksonville's JAXPort and Port Canaveral — remain closed to marine traffic.

The closures have forced five cruise lines to cancel voyages out of the three ports scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

At the same time, two of Florida's three largest ports — PortMiami and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades — are back open with cruise departures scheduled to take place as normal over the next few days.

The three ports that are closed were the closest cruise ports to the track of Hurricane Ian, which swept across Florida from west to east on Wednesday and Thursday.

The storm made landfall Wednesday more than 100 miles south of Port Tampa Bay, which was the cruise port closest to where the storm came ashore with winds of around 150 mph. The storm weakened considerably as it moved across the state to the vicinity of Port Canaveral.

Now much diminished, it's currently moving northward over the Atlantic on a course that will take it to the east of Jacksonville.

None of the three ports that are closed were directly in the path of Hurricane Ian, which has caused devastating destruction and loss of life in parts of Southwest Florida.

When will the three closed ports reopen — and how did they fare during the storm? Below, is a port-by-port look at what we know right now and what you can expect if you're scheduled to sail from one of the ports in the coming days.

Port Canaveral

The world's second-biggest cruise port has been shut down since 12 a.m. Wednesday and may not reopen for cruise ship arrivals until Saturday.

Port Canaveral did not immediately respond to questions from TPG about its status. However, in a tweet on Thursday, Royal Caribbean chief meteorologist James Van Fleet said the port had told the company it planned to survey the Port Canaveral ship channel for obstructions on Friday.

Assuming all is in order, two Royal Caribbean ships that have been stuck at sea due to the port closure — the 3,344-passenger Mariner of the Seas and the 3,858-passenger Independence of the Seas — would be able to return to Port Canaveral on Saturday morning to disemark passengers, Van Fleet suggested.

Mariner of the Seas had been scheduled to return to Port Canaveral to disembark passengers on Thursday and Independence of the Seas had been scheduled to return to the port on Friday.

Voyages on both of the ships scheduled to begin in Port Canaveral on Thursday and Friday, respectively, have been canceled.

Departures out of Port Canaveral on Thursday and Friday scheduled for Disney Cruise Line 's Disney Wish; Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Liberty; MSC Cruises ' MSC Divina; and Norwegian Cruise Line 's Norwegian Getaway also have been canceled.

The next cruises out of Port Canaveral still on the schedule are set to depart the port late Saturday. They include sailings of Disney's Disney Fantasy; and Carnival's Carnival Freedom and Mardi Gras .

Ten major cruise vessels operate regularly out of Port Canaveral this time of year.

Jacksonville's cruise port has been closed to marine traffic since 12 p.m. EDT Wednesday and there is no date or time yet set for when it will reopen.

"Once the storm passes, the Coast Guard will determine when it is safe to reopen," a representative for the port told TPG on Thursday afternoon in response to questions sent over Twitter.

As is the case with the other closed ports in Florida, JAXPort can't start the process of reopening the port until the U.S. Coast Guard lifts its declaration of a Port Condition Zulu for the port.

Under Port Condition Zulu, a port must remain closed to all vessel traffic unless specifically authorized by the Coast Guard's Captain of the Port.

"We have port assessment teams on standby to assess any damage and reopen the port as quickly as possible once the Coast Guard lifts condition Zulu," the representative of JAXPort told TPG. "Once Zulu is lifted, safely reopening the cruise terminal is a top priority."

Carnival, the only line to operate sailings out JAXPort, canceled the Thursday departure of the one ship it has based at the port, the 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation.

Carnival Elation sails out of JAXPort every Thursday and Sunday. As of now, the ship's Sunday departure is still scheduled to take place.

Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay — the main port for the Tampa area — has been closed to marine traffic since 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday and there is no date or time yet set for when it will reopen.

In a tweet Thursday afternoon, the port said the U.S. Coast Guard was working with a port heavy weather advisory group to do a detailed assessment of the port, waterways and channels.

In a subsequent tweet, the port said its current priorities were "safety of life, protection of the environment, & a full return to cargo and cruise operations."

Only one cruise vessel, Carnival's 2,052-passenger Carnival Paradise, sails regularly from the city at this time of year.

Carnival has canceled Thursday's departure of Carnival Paradise from Port Tampa Bay, which was at sea at the time Hurricane Ian hit Florida. The vessel is now on its way back to the Tampa area from Cozumel, Mexico, but Carnival has not said when it might arrive.

Carnival Paradise's next sailing out of Port Tampa Bay, scheduled for Sunday, still is scheduled to take place as of now.

Port Tampa Bay did not immediately respond to questions about its status from TPG.

Tampa Cruise Port Terminals: Ultimate Guide for Port Tampa Bay

J. Souza

If you’re going on a cruise out of Tampa and need some helpful advice about the Tampa cruise port, we’ve got you covered.

This cruise port currently serves cruise passengers sailing on Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises.

Tampa cruise port

Here is everything you need to know about Port Tampa Bay and some tips to help make your embarkation day as easy and smooth as possible.

We’ll start with the gritty details about directions, cruise parking, hotels, and various other information that you should know while making your plans. We’ll even provide some help in getting from the Tampa International Airport to the cruise terminal.

Info About Cruise Terminals

cruise port tampa bay

Port Tampa Bay has three terminals for cruise ships. All three have ample parking nearby, complete with valet services available through the port’s official parking vendor, Carpark. Located nearby, and within walking distance from terminal #3 and #6 are the Sparkman Wharf and The Florida Aquarium.

The cruise terminal you sail from will depend on which cruise line you’re traveling with. You should always check with your cruise line to make sure which terminal they are using for your cruise.

  • Terminal #2 : Carnival Cruise Line
  • Terminal #3 : Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International
  • Terminal #6: Various cruise lines

Port Tampa Bay is located at 1101 Channelside Drive, Tampa, FL 33602. However, each terminal has its own address, so if you are driving directly to the terminal it is important to know what address to use in your GPS or map program.

  • Cruise Terminal 2: 651 Channelside Drive (Parking Garage is at 810 Channelside Drive)
  • Cruise Terminal 3: 815 Channelside Drive (Parking Garage is at 810 Channelside Drive)
  • Cruise Terminal 6: 1333 McKay Street (Self-Parking Lot is at the same address)

If you have any questions about any of the terminals you can call 813-905-7678 or call toll free at 800-741-2297

Port Facilities

The Port Tampa Bay offers a 75-minute Educational Harbor Tours for passengers free of charge on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. You must make reservations for the tour in advance by calling 813-905-7678.

Visit the port’s website for more information.

When it comes to official port parking , many ports will charge an outrageous amount ($20 per day and up), simply because of the convenience. This will often force people to look for parking elsewhere so they can save money.

Port Tampa Bay parking is one of the few exceptions to this. Their standard rate for parking is $15 per day, with a flat upgrade of $20 for valet parking. If you have an oversized vehicle, the port charges double the standard rate.

You can pre-pay for parking online as well. Simply visit the port’s webpage on Tampa cruise parking , select the cruise line you’re sailing on, select the date of your departure and you will have 3 options. You can choose self-parking, valet parking, or oversized vehicles parking. Since you selected your particular cruise the system knows how many days you need to pay for. As mentioned earlier it’s a flat rate of $15 per day but sometimes there are promotional rates.

Of course you don’t have to pre-pay for your parking. You can also just show up at the port and pay there, just in case you totally forgot that little detail in the cruise planning process.

Parking is free for the disabled (including disabled veterans) as the following conditions are met:

  • Foot and hand control modifications
  • Wheelchair lift and ramp
  • Disabled Veterans license plate with vehicle registration

Other Off-site Parking Options

Although Port Tampa Bay has some of the best official parking rates, it can weigh a little heavy on some budgets. Therefore, here are a few other parking options near the cruise port that could possibly let your wallet breathe a little easier. Some of these parking lots are so close to the port you can practically walk to your cruise terminal.

Park 4 Cruise

http://park4cruise.com/ | 800-720-9150 | 1016 Channelside Drive

Park 4 Cruise offers parking that is very close to the port of Tampa. The Orange Lot, which is adjacent to all three cruise terminals, is as low as $10.50 per day (plus 7% sales tax and a $4 processing fee). This parking lot is practically on the premises of the port itself, being less than a quarter mile away. Their website says they are only 300 steps to the terminals from their parking lots, so that’s hard to beat. They will also shuttle you for free to and from the Tampa cruise terminal.

241 Car Services

https://241parking.com | 877-886-1583 | 122 Channelside Drive

241 Car Services are located as close to the cruise terminals as the port’s official parking lots and at much cheaper rates. Depending on your ship and the length of your cruise, you’re looking at paying roughly $7 to $9 per day, including tax and a $5 service fee.

They will also provide you with free shuttle service and luggage assistance and will give you a free car wash while you’re gone.

Park Connect

https://www.myparkconnect.com/ | 813-334-1303 | 107 N 11th St

Just .3 miles from the Channelside Bay cruise terminal in Tampa, Park Connect has no hidden-fees in their pricing. The cost is $10 per day plus tax and again, there are no service fees. Park Connect offers covered parking areas, free cancellation up to 24-hours before your cruise and an easy to user interface for pre-paying for parking.

Getting to Port Tampa Bay

No matter how you plan to arrive into Tampa, you need a way to get to the port. Driving yourself is easy enough, you just have to find a place to park.

However, if you’re not driving, there are other various ways to get to the port, especially if you’re flying into the Tampa airport.

Getting to the Tampa Bay Port from Tampa International Airport

The cruise port is only 10 miles from the airport and is one of the easiest and most accessible cruise ports in the US. The trip will take 17-20 minutes depending on traffic

While there are taxis available in Tampa, they often charge a flat $30 and up for the short ride from the airport to Port Tampa Bay. If pinching pennies is your preference, consider, instead, using a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft.

Booking a ride is as simple as downloading the app and choosing a driver. The estimated cost for Uber or Lyft is about $17-$21. But keep in mind that is just an esimate based on the time of the writing of this article.

Cruise Line Transfers

For the sake of convenience, many cruise lines will offer transfers for their passengers from the Tampa airport. Although this is a great service, it can get expensive if you’re traveling with a lot of people. Also, your shuttle is only going to be available on cruise day, so if you fly in the day before you’ll have to seek alternate means of transportation.

Traveling from Orlando

If you live in Orlando, or you decide to fly into Orlando instead and go visit one of the various parks there before your cruise, getting to Tampa for your cruise can be tricky as the two cities are roughly 90 miles apart.

For this we recommend getting a one-way car rental. You should be able to find rates as low as $50-$60 for a car.

If cheaper airfare is the reason you’re considering flying into Orlando, factor in the extra transportation costs between Orlando and Tampa. $100 or more on rental cars (round trip) could end up costing you more than flying into Tampa.

Park & Cruise Hotels Nearby

For those of you that prefer having an extra day or two buffer before or after your cruise, you’re in luck because there are several hotels nearby that offer cruise packages, free parking, or free shuttle service.

Tahitian Inn Café & Spa

601 S Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa FL 33609 | 5 miles from cruise port

This hotel features a “park and cruise” package that gives you free shuttle to and from the cruise port, up to 2 weeks of free parking, and a 10% discount at the hotel spa. Be sure to let them know at check-in that you wish to use their free shuttle service to reserve your seat.

Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City/Downtown

1301 E 7 th Ave, Tampa, FL 33605 | 1 mile from cruise port

Along with a free hot breakfast and Wi-Fi, if you book this hotel’s Park and Cruise package, you’ll receive free roundtrip transportation to the cruise port, as well as parking for up to 7 days.

Residence Inn by Marriott Tampa Downtown

101 E Tyler St, Tampa, FL 33602 | 1.5 miles from cruise port

Residence Inn’s “Fly Here, Cruise There” package provides guests with shuttle service from the hotel to the cruise port, along with free internet and breakfast. This package accommodates 2 people. Additional passengers will cost an extra $10 each.

Hilton Garden Inn Tampa Ybor Historic District

1700 E 9 th Ave, Tampa, FL 33605 | 1.5 miles from the cruise port

While staying at this hotel you will enjoy free access to the hotel’s fitness center and various other amenities. They do not have a specific cruise package, but they do offer free parking, as well as a free shuttle to anywhere within a 3 mile radius, which includes the cruise port.

Top Things to Do in Tampa

If you’d like to do some sightseeing before you ship out, go out to dinner, or visit an attraction or two, Tampa certainly does not disappoint. Although Orlando may be the tourist and theme park hot spot, Tampa has a few things up its sleeves as well.

Restaurants

The city of Tampa has over 2,000 restaurants in and around downtown Tampa, offering a variety of cuisines and menus to satisfy any one’s culinary cravings. Here are just a few of the tops ones we think you should check out before leaving on your cruise.

Columbia Restaurant

Located in the heart of the Ybor city district where you’ll find a large Latin community is the Columbia Restaurant. They have been in business since 1905 and they make a mean Cuban sandwich on fresh Cuban bread.

Fourth Street Shrimp Store

If seafood is your style, come on over to the Fourth Street Shrimp Store. Originally just a shrimp store, over the years since it first opened in 1984 it has evolved into one of the best seafood restaurants in Tampa Bay.

Eddie & Sam’s NY Pizza

Featuring the best New York style pizzas anywhere other than New York is Eddie & Sam’s, located on Twiggs St in Tampa. They even use water shipped directly from New York to make the dough more authentic.

Cappys Pizzeria

The only pizza restaurant that can possibly rival Eddie & Sam’s is Cappys, offering the best in both New York style and Chicago deep dish, as well as a variety of salads and subs.

The Brunchery

Take an extra day to sleep in a little bit and enjoy being on vacation. When you wake up, head on over to the Brunchery located in South Tampa. There you’ll find the best in comfort food, including steak and eggs, Belgian waffles, French toast, and so much more.

The Refinery

If you have severe allergies and need a menu that’s gluten-free, you can either go to The Columbia for their gluten-free options, or try out The Refinery. Here the menu changes every week, so you’ll always be able to get something different. And on the menu each week are tasty gluten-free options.

Attractions in Tampa

Along with tasty restaurants, Tampa has plenty of attractions to offer. You won’t want to miss out on any of these, so plan your trip accordingly so you can experience as much as you want.

Busch Gardens Tampa

Anyone who’s ever been to a Busch Gardens knows just how much fun it is. You get to visit some of your favorite countries within the park and each one provides different cultural elements to enjoy. The Tampa Bay Busch Gardens features various countries found in Africa, such as Egypt, Morocco, Nairobi, and so much more.

Additionally, you’ll find some of the best theme park rides here, including the SheiKra, which is only located at the Tampa Bay Busch Gardens. This 200-foot tall floorless dive coaster provides an extreme thrill for anyone willing and able.

Sparkman Wharf

Located within walking distance from the cruise terminals is Sparkman Wharf. Here you will find all you could ever want in dining and shopping, as well as an open-air biergarten that includes over 24 taps of Florida craft beer, all with a breathtaking waterfront view.

The Florida Aquarium

Also within walking distance of the port (on the other side) is the Florida Aquarium for anyone fascinated by underwater creatures. Visit a large variety of animal habitats from otters, sharks, and octopuses, to seahorses and turtles. They house many exhibits, a splash pad for the kids, and a 4-D theater.

Henry B. Plant Museum

Henry B. Plant was the mastermind behind building the Tampa railway system in the 1800s. This, along with the port, helped Tampa to grow into the bustling metropolis that it is today. He also built the Tampa Bay Hotel, which is now the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall, where the museum is located.

If you’re looking for another great place for the family that’s educational and filled with animals, come over to the ZooTampa at Lowry Park. If you come on the weekend, at 1pm you can stand eye-to-eye with a giraffe and feed them some lettuce. You can also visit a variety of other animals, all safely behind glass enclosures.

Planning your next cruise doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Understanding the city you’ll be traveling to and the logistics involved will give you a great start to making trip planning as painless as possible.

Luckily, transportation, parking, and lodging is very easy to find here, and won’t cost you too much (depending on the options you go with). Additionally, Tampa is filled with rich history, dining, and entertainment for anyone in your group to experience and enjoy. Plan to stay for an extra day or two so you can enjoy as much as can before shipping out on your cruise.

We hope that your trip to Tampa is filled with fun, and that you and your family have a safe trip there and back.

Complete Guide to Cruising From Port Tampa Bay

In our opinion, Port Tampa Bay is one of the best-kept secrets in cruising. While ports on the eastern side of Florida — including Miami, Port Everglades, and Port Canaveral — are well known thanks to the mega-ships and multiple terminals at each port, Tampa seems to sneak under the radar.

Port of Tampa Bay Terminal 2

Despite the lack of notoriety, Port Tampa Bay offers a ton for cruise passengers. This includes multiple terminals with a constant stream of ships, lots to do in the area, more convenience, and fewer headaches than dealing with a larger port.

In other words, you get a lot of the benefits of a larger port without a lot of the drawbacks.

So whether you want to sail to The Bahamas, Mexico, or points in between, or if you want to sail on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, or Norwegian, the port has something to offer.

Below we dive into all the details of everything you need to know about sailing from the Port Tampa Bay.

  • Distance from Tampa Airport: 10 miles
  • Distance from Orlando Airport: 90 miles
  • Number of Terminals: 3
  • Passengers Carried Each Year: 1 million
  • Cruise Ship Dockings Each Year: 180+

Port Tampa Bay Location

The cruise port sits in the Channel District of Tampa, which is just a couple of minutes from downtown, as well as the popular Ybor City area. If you are flying in, the port is only about 10 miles from Tampa International Airport, which will take you about 15-20 minutes.

While the location of the port is convenient for cruise passengers with lots to do and places to stay just a few minutes away, there is one drawback. When you head out to sea you will leave Tampa and head out of Tampa Bay, passing between St. Petersburg and Bradenton. There, you will pass under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

While the bridge is impressive, its height actually limits the size of the ships that can sail from Tampa. Larger ships just can’t get under the bridge. This is a reason why some of the biggest and newest ships don’t sail from the port.

Driving to the port? If so, the address you’ll want to use is:

651 Channelside Drive Tampa, Florida 33602

Like other Florida cities there is a lot to do in the area, and you may not be coming directly from the airport to the cruise port. If so, we have the estimated distances and drive times between a number of popular areas in the region:

  • Tampa International Airport: 10 miles | 15-20 minutes
  • Orlando International Airport: 90 miles | 1 hr 30 minutes
  • St. Petersburg: 25 miles | 30-40 minutes
  • Ybor City: 2 miles | 10 minutes
  • Disney World: 70 miles | 1 hr 10 minutes
  • Lakeland: 36 miles | 40-60 minutes
  • Clearwater: 25 miles | 40-60 minutes
  • Sarasota: 60 miles | 55-70 minutes

For more on getting to the port, see below.

Things to Do Near the Port

Tampa is blessed with no shortage of things to do, whether you want amusement parks, sporting events, culture, history, or more. Below are just a few things to do before or after your cruise.

The Florida Aquarium Literally right next door to the cruise terminals, the Florida Aquarium is a world-class facility with lots to see. Perfect if you have kids, the aquarium will get them up close and personal not only with fish, sharks, and turtles, but also wildlife like otters, lemurs, and more. In our opinion, if you have a couple of hours before or after your cruise, it’s a can’t miss attraction.

Ybor City Just about 10 minutes from the cruise port, Ybor City is a great place to head if you’re looking for something to do in the evening. The historic district is home to lots of older buildings that have been converted into shops and restaurants, most with a Latin flair. It’s great for a date night or just a stroll to explore and take in the atmosphere.

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Want to have a little fun at the casino? Then head to the Seminole Hard Rock. The world-class gaming facility would fit right at home in Vegas, with a massive gaming floor, restaurants, and a hotel. It’s about 15-20 minutes away from the cruise port, but if you want to play slots, double down on blackjack, or toss the dice, then it’s a great place to spend some time (and money).

Cruise Terminals

Port Tampa Bay operates three different cruise terminals: Cruise Terminal #2, Cruise Terminal #3, and Cruise Terminal #6.

Port of Tampa map

Cruise Terminal #2 If the port had a “main” terminal, this would be it. Terminal #2 sits at the southern end of the cruise complex. Parking is adjacent to the terminal, as is the Florida Aquarium and a complex of shops and restaurants.

Cruise Terminal #3 Along the eastern edge of the port, Cruise Terminal #3 often serves Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines. The location is right across from the official port parking garage, and with a berth length of 1,050 feet, the docking space can handle the larger ships to call on Port Tampa Bay.

Cruise Terminal #6 This terminal is the northernmost of the three terminals. That makes it extremely convenient if you just want to get to the ship and get on as there is parking right at the terminal and there isn’t as much traffic here. However, the terminal is a little farther from some of the activities like the aquarium and restaurants/shops that are further south in the complex.

Hotels Near the Port Tampa Bay

In a tourist hotspot like Tampa, there’s no shortage of places to stay. That means it can be convenient — and inexpensive — to stay the night before your cruise.

In general, we recommend that passengers flying in for their cruise plan to arrive a day early and stay the night. There are simply too many issues that can come up with flying that can cause delays to risk flying in on the day your cruise departs.

If you are driving in from the area, then you are usually fine driving to the port on the morning of your trip, but it still makes a lot of sense to stay in Tampa the night before. Not only is there a lot to see and do in the area, but it’s nice to already be in town on cruise day, meaning you can take your time in heading to the ship.

While the entire Tampa area can offer hotels, there aren’t many right at the port. The closest hotels are in downtown, which is a short distance away. There are also some hotels in Ybor City, which is also nearby.

Hotels near the cruise terminals:

  • Hilton Garden Inn Tampa Ybor Historic District
  • Hampton Inn Tampa Downtown Channel District
  • Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk Hotel

As a city that caters to cruise passengers, there are also a number of Tampa hotels that offer parking during your cruise , as well as hotels with cruise shuttles . Below are a few options for each, but we suggest seeing our full list in the articles linked above.

Hotels with cruise parking:

  • Barrymore Hotel
  • Home2 Suites by Hilton Tampa Downtown Channel District
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tampa East – Ybor City

Hotels with shuttles/near streetcar stop:

  • Tampa Marriott Water Street
  • Hilton Garden Inn Ybor City
  • Courtyard Tampa Downtown

Getting to Port Tampa Bay

Of course you can’t go on your cruise until you get to the ship. Fortunately, there is no shortage of ways to get from anywhere in the Tampa area to the cruise port, all at an affordable price.

We have all of your options and full details for getting to the port here . Below, we cover the most common ways for getting to the Port Tampa Bay.

Norwegian Sun in Port

Driving to the Port Many people elect to drive to the port, whether they live in the area or they fly in and have a rental car. Coming from Orlando? Expect the drive to take about an hour and a half. From spots in the Tampa/St. Pete region, it can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on where you are.

Driving definitely offers convenience of getting in and out from the port without relying on someone else to give you a ride. As well, Tampa offers relatively inexpensive parking. Official port parking is only $15 per day, but other independent lots can be even cheaper. (More on this below.)

Uber/Lyft Uber and Lyft are popular options to get around the Tampa Bay area because they make it easy to get from Point A to Point B, no matter where you are trying to go. Simply open up the app, request a ride and it should be there within minutes (even the airport). They also offer rates that are usually less expensive than taxi cabs. For instance, a taxi ride from the airport to the cruise port is a flat $30. It would be around $25 with Uber/Lyft.

Below we’ve estimated Uber/Lyft fares from certain points around town:

  • Tampa International Airport: $20-25
  • Orlando International Airport: $95-105

Hotels with Cruise Shuttles Planning to stay at a hotel before your cruise? Some hotels offer shuttles to the cruise port as a perk for cruise passengers. Others are near public transportation that can get you to the ship in just a few minutes. No matter which option you choose, selecting a hotel with a shuttle can take a lot of the headache out of getting to the ship on embarkation day. See our article for a full list of Tampa hotels with cruise shuttles .

One of the best things about cruising from Port Tampa Bay is that parking is both convenient and inexpensive compared to other ports in Florida. For example, while parking for the Port of Miami is upwards of $20+ per day, you’ll only pay $15 — and at some lots much lower — to park for a Tampa cruise.

Hotels in Tampa with park and cruise deals

Official Port Parking Many people like to park at the official port parking lots. They offer a lot of convenience as they are right next to the cruise terminals. The main parking spot is a garage located across from terminals 2 and 3. Rates are $15 per day and you can pay in advance online to have everything taken care of before you arrive. There is also oversized vehicle parking available. There is also valet parking available for an additional $20. Terminal #6 has parking right next to the ship in an open-air lot.

If you are disabled, you may be eligible for free parking. The official port lots allow those with vehicle modifications such as ramps, or foot/hand controls to park for free if they are sailing. Also, 100% disabled veterans with license plates designating the car as such can also park for free.

Independent Lots One of the reasons that Tampa charges relatively little for parking is that the port faces a lot of competition. There are a number of independent lots that line Channelside Drive, in some cases costing as little as $7 per day (plus taxes and fees).

What’s the catch? There really isn’t one. These companies simply compete with the port for your business, and their main weapon is having lower rates. In fact, these lots are often right near the cruise terminal themselves and usually offer a shuttle if you don’t want to make the short walk.

For more details and pricing, see our Tampa cruise parking page here .

Hotels with Cruise Parking One of the best-kept secrets in cruising is that many hotels near cruise ports love to offer cruise parking to passengers in exchange for a single night’s stay. Book a room, get a night’s stay and have your parking taken care of as well. That’s hard to beat. Often you’ll need to book a package with the hotel that includes cruise parking, but it often includes both parking and transportation to the ship. See our list of Tampa hotels with cruise parking here .

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the cheapest way to get to Port Tampa Bay? Need to get to the port? There are a number of ways to get there. While there is some public transportation offered, it’s not particularly convenient, unless you are coming from Ybor City. Ybor City has a rail line ( TECO Streetcar ) that runs back and forth from Ybor City to the port area.

Other than that, the least expensive way we’ve found to get around is using Uber and Lyft. For example, it would cost around $25 to get from the airport to the cruise port using Lyft.

What’s the cheapest parking for a Tampa cruise? The lowest rate we know is about $4 per day, through 717 Parking. They operate a Union Station Lot that’s a mile or two from the cruise terminals. There is no shuttle offered, so you’ll have to get a ride to the cruise terminals. Still, to park for a week you won’t find any cheaper place unless you stay at a hotel with free cruise parking. See more on parking options here .

Where should I stay in Tampa before my cruise? We suggest trying to find a hotel in downtown Tampa or in Ybor City. Both areas are near the port and have a number of things to do. Staying here essentially adds another port of call to your cruise with lots to do and explore. Plus, it’s easy to get to the cruise ship from either location on embarkation day.

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

The Jimmy Buffett cruise line, Margaritaville at Sea , has expanded its Heroes Sail Free program to include the new ship that will sail out of Tampa starting in June. The program will now allow teachers, first responders and military to sail as many times as they like for free with a paying guest.

In addition, all passengers sailing in the hero’s stateroom will receive an Express Pass and other benefits as part of the enhanced program, the company announced.

“We wanted to add even more value to our ‘Heroes Sail Free’ program, giving these heroes some well-deserved VIP treatment for their dedication and hard work,” said Christopher Ivy, CEO of Margaritaville at Sea. “We’ve been overwhelmed with requests to expand the program to our newest vessel and are excited to answer the call for our heroes.”

The Express Pass gives passengers priority embarkation and disembarkation as well as two complimentary welcome beverages, priority luggage delivery and expedited booking assistance for shore excursions.

To take advantage of the offer, book online through the link available on Govx.com or at margaritavilleatsea.com/offers/heroessailfree/ .

Though singer Jimmy Buffett died in 2023, his brand lives on in multiple restaurants and businesses , including the cruise line Margaritaville at Sea, which has been offering low-cost cruises out of Palm Beach since 2021. In June, Tampa will be the port of call for its second, much larger cruise ship, offering trips to Mexico and Key West. The Islander will arrive at Port Tampa Bay in mid June, with the first cruise sailing on June 14.

The free cruise program includes U.S. military service members (active duty and veterans), police, firefighters, EMS personnel, nurses and educators sailing for free with a paying guest.

To be eligible for the deal, passengers must be a verified member through the GovX or ShopVCS platform. Staterooms must be booked online after member verification and at least one paying guest must be booked in the same stateroom. Blackout dates may apply based on available stateroom inventory.

New 'Aqua Harbor' to bring two new condominium buildings and rooftop bar hotel to hidden gem area of New Port Richey

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Some new life is being breathed into New Port Richey in the form of development. Plans are in the works for the construction of a pair of new condominiums and a hotel on US-19 at Marine Parkway.

What You Need To Know

Plans are being finalized for the construction of two condominium buildings and a rooftop bar hotel off us-19 at marine parkway in new port richey the project, called ‘aqua harbor,’ is being overseen by simone development, who has experience revitalizing areas of the city building of 'aqua harbor' is anticipated to begin in april or may visit the city of new port richey's website for a photo of the project.

A passion for one father-son duo.

“We really believe in New Port Richey . It’s a huge, up-and-coming market.”

Shuffling through various blueprints, Paul and Eric Simone are running through plans. Plans to revitalize a hidden gem in New Port Richey.

“It’s one of these markets where there’s not many places left to get in before it’s too late,” says  Eric Simone , Vice President of Simone Development . “New Port Richey is the place to be.”

The father-son duo is developing three phases of construction known as ‘Aqua Harbor.’ Planning two new condo buildings and a rooftop bar hotel.

“It took five years to put this deal together,” says Paul. “Working with the City Manager Debbie Manns has been very helpful. This came up as we were developing the Magnuson and in the process of tearing it down. This came up, and we made a deal.”

They’re no strangers when it comes to construction. Paul has had years of experience—including building the Comfort Inn off US-19. And it’s a dream Eric has had since second grade.

“A lot of people wrote down ‘I want to be a doctor or lawyer.’ I remember, specifically, on mine I wrote ‘I want to build hotels.’ And I remember the teacher telling me to put something down more realistic and I kind of laughed and said ‘No, I’m going to build hotels.’ And here I am today, building hotels.”

The site for Aqua Harbor is a short drive to Marine Parkway. Where the old Magnuson Hotel stood, now resting in a heap of rubble. But those scraps, Paul says, will be recycled.

“You have to be careful with how you remove everything,” he says. “It takes a lot of labor and time but value-wise, it’s there.”

And now that the old has been torn down, it’s finally time to put up the new.

“We’re almost there,” says Paul. “Hopefully the building will start going up sometime in April or May.”

Construction should be finished within three and a half years. They hope the project leads to more down the road.

“We’re only getting started!” said Eric. “We’re excited.”

Excited to be part of the growth of this area.
