India's Major Airports
A Guide to Major Airports in India
Anand Josh/Getty Images
Air travel in India has increased at a phenomenal rate in recent years, making India's domestic civil aviation market the fastest growing in the world. It's now regarded as the third largest domestic civil aviation market globally (after the United States and China). What's more, projections indicate that India's civil aviation market is poised to become the third-largest overall in the world by 2024.
The expansion is being driven by airport modernization , the success of low-cost carriers, foreign investment in domestic airlines , and emphasis on regional connectivity. Massive upgrades of major airports in India have been undertaken, with the significant input of private companies, and are still continuing as capacity is being stretched. India now has some much improved, glossy new airport terminals. Here are the details.
Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)
- Location: Palam, 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the city center.
- Pros: Modern terminal with convenient access to downtown Delhi.
- Cons : Fog from December until February often delays or cancels flights.
- Distance to the City Center: A pre-paid taxi, which is recommended over a metered one, costs between $5 and $7. The journey takes 45 minutes to one hour during normal traffic. The Delhi Metro Airport Express , known as the Orange Line, costs less than $1 and takes 20 minutes.
Delhi competes with Mumbai for the accolade of best airport in India, although it has consistently been coming out on top in recent years. Delhi airport was leased to a private operator in 2006 and subsequently upgraded. The renovations to improve upon and expand the airport are ongoing but so far have included the addition of a new integrated international terminal (Terminal 3) and development of the AeroCity hospitality precinct adjacent to the airport. This precinct has many hotels and restaurants, and is connected to a Metro train station on the Orange Line. Currently, Delhi airport services almost 70 million passengers per year, making it the busiest in India. Once complete, the upgrade will increase the airport's capacity to 100 million passengers per year.
Mumbai Chhatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM)
- Location: The international terminal is located at Sahar in Andheri East, 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of the city center. The domestic terminal is in Santa Cruz, 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of the city center.
- Pros: The main terminal is modern and easy to navigate.
- Cons: Separate international and domestic terminals, requiring transferring passengers to take a cab between the two. Flight delays due to congestion on the runway. No direct public transportation options connecting the airport and city center.
- Distance to the City Center: A taxi will cost about $5 and will take one to two hours, depending on traffic.
Mumbai's airport handles about 50 million passengers a year, making it India's second largest airport. Similar to Delhi airport, it was leased to a private operator in 2006, and a new integrated international terminal constructed. The terminal, known as Terminal 2, opened in early 2014. Domestic airlines are currently in the process of relocating to Terminal 2 in a phased manner, although low-cost carriers still depart from the old domestic terminal in a different area. The new terminal has greatly improved the airport's functionality, yet runway congestion and consequential flight delays remain a significant problem.
Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport (BLR)
- Location: Devanahalli, 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the city center.
- Pros: The terminal is modern and well maintained.
- Cons It's far from the city.
- Distance to the City Center: A taxi will cost about $12 and take one to two hours, depending on the traffic. There's an airport shuttle bus that goes to the city center and costs $2 to $4, and it takes at least as long as a taxi would.
Bengaluru's airport is India's third busiest airport, with more than 33 million passengers a year. This brand new airport was constructed by a private company on a greenfield site and started operating in May 2008. Since then, it has been expanded in two phases. The second phase commenced in 2015, and involves the construction of a second runway and second terminal. For now, the airport only has one functional terminal that's used for both domestic and international flights. Bengaluru airport often experiences problems with fog early in the mornings during winter. If traveling then, be prepared for flight delays or cancellations.
Chennai International Airport (MAA)
- Location: Pallavaram, nine miles (14.5 kilometers) southwest of the city center.
- Pros: None (until renovations are completed in 2021).
- Cons: Currently under construction, poor infrastructure, safety concerns.
- Distance to the City Center: A 30 minutes taxi ride to the city center will cost about $4. The new Chennai Metro train also connects the airport with Chennai Central station on the Blue Line. It costs about $1 and takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Chennai is India's fourth busiest airport, and the main hub for arrivals and departures in South India. It handles more than 20 million passengers a year, about half of whom are flying domestically, and is owned and operated by the Indian government. Flights are currently split over three separate terminals, causing inconvenience to passengers. The airport is in the process of being expanded and redeveloped to increase its capacity to 40 million passengers per year. These works include building a new integrated international terminal (Terminal 2), repurposing old terminals, and linking all the terminals internally.
Kolkata Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU)
- Location: Dum Dum, 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of the city center.
- Pros: Integrated domestic and international terminal.
- Cons: Fog in the winter delays flights. Inefficient customer service, poor maintenance.
- Distance to the City Center: A taxi costs about $5 and takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. There is a metro station at the airport—the fare is just cents, and takes about 75 to 90 minutes.
Kolkata's airport is an international airport but about 85 percent of the passengers are domestic travelers. It's India's fifth busiest airport and handles almost 22 million passengers a year. Like Chennai airport, Kolkata airport is owned and operated by the Indian government. The airport's old domestic and international terminals have been replaced by a much needed new integrated terminal (known as Terminal 2), which opened in January 2013. The airport's modernization resulted in it being awarded "Best Improved Airport in the Asia-Pacific Region" in 2014 and 2015 by the Airports Council International. New retail stores finally opened at the airport in 2017, providing passengers with something to do. Another expansion is in the works to further increase the airport's capacity, with the first phase expected to get underway sometime in late 2020 and be completed by 2023.
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD)
- Location: Shamshabad, 19 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of the city center.
- Pros: Environmentally-friendly, modern and hi-tech.
- Cons: A bit far from downtown Hyderabad. Currently undergoing expansion works, with some operations relocated to interim terminals.
- Distance to the City Center: Taxis cost between $7 and $14 and take one to two hours, depending on traffic. There's also an express bus that costs $1.50 to $3.50 and takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.
Hyderabad airport opened in mid-March 2008. It's operated by a private company and handles just over 21 million passengers a year. The airport is world-class, with excellent facilities, and it has won awards for its eco-friendly initiatives. In 2019, the airport launched India's first biometric face recognition facility for domestic flights, eliminating the need for passengers to show boarding passes. The main drawback is that the airport is undergoing expansion works to accommodate the rapid rise in passenger numbers. While this is taking place, operations have been split between the main passenger terminal, Interim International Departures Terminal and Interim Domestic Arrivals Terminal .
Goa International Airport (GOI)
- Location: Dabolim.
- Pros: Located equally between north and south Goa.
- Cons: Overcrowded, bad layout, bad infrastructure, lack of facilities. The airport is also closed from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. five days a week, as military flight training is carried out there.
- Distance to Panjim: The 40-minute pre-paid taxi costs about $15. There is also a state-run, app-based taxi service called GoaMiles . Alternatively, an inexpensive shuttle bus service runs from the airport to Panjim, Calangute, and Margao (the main city in South Goa). It can be booked online here or at the airport.
Goa's airport is currently the state's only airport (a second airport is under construction in Mopa in North Goa). It's a government-run airport that operates out of a military base. The airport handled about 8.5 million passengers in 2019, making it the 9th busiest airport in India. However, its capacity is only 5 million passengers, which affects its functionality and results in overcrowding during peak times. The terminal is undergoing refurbishment and expansion but until that is completed expect delays and inconveniences.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts
From the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.
Margot Bigg is a freelance travel writer and editor who has spent most of her adult life traveling and living overseas. Her favorite topics include India travel, experiential travel, wellness, hotels, and the arts. When not on the road, Margot enjoys studying languages, discovering new music, taking pictures of random cats, and planning her next adventures.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.
“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”
Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”
While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.
Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure
Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”
Faizal A Rahiman/Getty Images
On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.
Alongkot Sumritjearapol/Getty Images
Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
al_la/Getty Images
On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.
Auroville, Tamil Nadu
mazzzur/Getty Images
If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."
Andaman Islands
Vyacheslav Argenberg/Getty Images
Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits.
While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.
Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh
Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day.
Jaipur. Rajasthan
The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.
Jodhpur, Rajasthan
platongkoh/Getty Images
Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”
Udaipur, Rajasthan
Jeremy Woodhouse/Getty Images
T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.
If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.
Kaziranga National Park, Assam
ePhotocorp/Getty Images
The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins.
Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.
India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.

Here are our picks of offbeat destinations in India, spanning the gamut from quaint Himalayan villages to tiny coastal towns. After all, the discerning traveller knows how to embrace new destinations before they become all the rage in the travel world.
Offbeat Destinations in India
Binsar, uttarakhand.
If leisurely strolls and spirited hikes in Kumaon Himalayas are what your mountain dreams are made of, Binsar will easily find its way to your heart. A scenic four-hour drive from Nainital, northwest of Almora in Uttarakhand, this dreamy hamlet is slowly gaining popularity for its eponymous wildlife sanctuary that boasts over 200 species of birds in a dense forest of oaks, rhododendrons, and pines. Gorgeous sunsets, 60 kilometres of hiking trails, leopard sightings, ancient temples, panoramic mountain views, and the sky putting up a celestial odyssey every night make this offbeat destination the perfect relaxing getaway in India.
Getting There: Binsar is 125 kilometres from Kathgodam, the nearest railway station. The closest airport is in Pantnagar which is a half-hour drive from Kathgodam but the connectivity can be erratic at times. It is a nine-hour drive from Delhi.
Stay: The Kumaon is a 40-minute drive from Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and offers different trails that stretch through oak and rhododendron forests. Doubles from INR 28,000.
Chatpal, Kashmir
Tucked far down south of Kashmir’s bustling valleys, this quaint little village has no electricity, but unknown treks through its thick pine forests, gushing streams, and the majestic sun-kissed Himalayas in the backdrop make up for it. There are no touristy spots or gimmicks to lure you into spending a night or two, but you will stay back in Chatpal anyway. The unending stretches of dense woods, beds of wildflowers, and open meadows are enough to cast a spell. When here, strike up conversations with the GujjarBakerwal locals over hot cups of kahwa, go on ski trips or forest hikes, and stroll through apple and walnut orchards.
Getting There: From Srinagar Airport, Chatpal is 90 kilometres away. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, 222 kilometres away.
Stay: Eden Resorts & Spa in Movera, Pahalgam offers a luxurious stay with an outdoor pool, cosy fireplaces, elaborate breakfast buffets, and relaxing spa sessions. Doubles from INR 12,500.
Sindhudurg, Maharashtra
The magic of Sindhudurg’s unhurried life is unmatched. Deep in the Konkan stretch of India’s western state, Maharashtra , this offbeat coastal destination offers you a slice of Goa’s susegad. The imposing Sindhudurg Fort flanked by the Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Sea has tales of glory and valour to tell. The pristine beaches, rock formations along the coastline, a whole slew of monsoon waterfalls and ravines, ancient temples and forts in ruins, and quiet backwaters are still far from the limelight. But the world is finally catching up, thanks to the emerging Malvani cuisine and a high-end resort with responsible luxury in its DNA.
Getting There: Mopa Airport is approximately 87 kilometres. Sindhudurg also has its own airport but with limited connectivity.
Stay: Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg boasts conscious hospitality. Expect double-bedroom villas with minimalist decor, plunge pools, and wellness therapies. The standard package starts from INR 80,000 per night (with a minimum of three nights’ booking).
Khimsar, Rajasthan
Camel safaris in the dunes, spiritual tours of ancient Hindu and Jain temples, a forlorn fortress, and rare black bucks at Panchala Black Buck Reserve—Khimsar is your desert dream come true. Located amid miles and miles of the sands of the Great Thar, the 15th-century Khimsar Fort stands tall like the sentinel of a glorious history. The famous Naguar Cattle Festival may have put this tiny hamlet on the map, but it is the picturesque oasis with a turquoise lake at its heart that makes Khimsar stand out.
Getting There: Jodhpur (80 kilometres) has the closest airport and railway station, both of which are well-connected to major cities of India.
Stay: A part of Khimsar Fort has been turned into a Welcomhotel property. This heritage hotel has 71 rooms and suites, four dining outlets, a spa, and two huts at the nearby Dunes Village. Doubles from INR 7,600.
Narara Island, Gujarat
The first marine national park of India spread over 42 islands, coral walks, exotic sea life, and a fort bang in the middle of the beach—need we say more? Narara, located 60 kilometres from Jamnagar, is tucked on the southern shore of the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, where marine life and mangroves thrive. Follow the trails left by small shells that are home to hermit crabs; spot octopuses, pufferfish, stingrays, sea anemones, molluscs, sponges, and exotic corals at your feet. Once done meandering through the mangroves , watch flamingos and pelicans wading into the sunset.
Getting There: From Jamnagar airport, hit NH 947 to reach Narara Island in an hour. Take permission from the Forest Office Jamnagar for access to the marine national park.
Stay: Stay at Sayaji Jamnagar which places you at a short distance from Lakhota Lake and within two kilometres of Shantinath Mandir. There are 60 rooms and two restaurants to savour traditional Gujarati dishes. Doubles from INR 2,920.
Amadubi, Jharkhand
If it weren’t for the local chitrakar families of Amadubi, the Pyatkar scroll paintings would have long become a thing of the past. This artists’ village near Jamshedpur in Jharkhand is home to one of the oldest forms of tribal art in India. Sit with the local painters inside their mud huts; paat or scrolls of cloth, tree bark, or leaves painted with folktales and legends will unfurl before your eyes. If you wish to dig deeper into its history, there’s a small museum in the village showcasing everything from the time-honoured art form to musical instruments and a collection of traditional utensils.
Getting There: Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi (170 kilometres) is the nearest and has direct connectivity from metro cities. Alternatively, you can hop on a local bus or train from Dhalbhumgarh (seven kilometres ).
Stay: Kalamandir CCAF has the facility to pitch luxurious tents in Amadubi. Available on advance booking (+91 657-2320109). Or you can base yourself at Ramada Jamshedpur Bistupur (84 kilometres) for a more comfortable stay. Doubles from INR 6,000.
Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh
If you seek spiritual awakening in India, there are grand Buddhist pagodas and age-old monasteries at this offbeat, lesser-explored destination. If it is a refuge in nature’s lap that you’re looking for, there are tea plantations, paddy fields, and rivers. Moodbidri, Karnataka
Ever heard of ‘Jain Kashi’ of India? Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka has rightly earned the sobriquet—the beautiful temple town is home to 18 Jain Basadis. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, these temple complexes still retain their original design and architecture. Saavira Kambada Basadi, probably the most revered of them all, has over thousand pillars showcasing Nepalese, Oriental, and Hoysala influences, but the most fascinating draw is that no two pillars are identical! The Shri Devi Annapoorneshwari Temple Kodyadka, with the Hindu goddess Durga as its central deity, is another landmark. Come here for the ancient temple complexes, horticultural farms, and a dedicated butterfly park, but stay (longer) to witness time-honoured traditions like Hulivesha (tiger dance), Kambala (buffalo race), and Bhoota Kola (a shamanistic dance ritual).

Arittapatti, Tamil Nadu
The state’s first biodiversity heritage site is a unique landscape of rocky hills and seven barren granite hillocks, supporting 72 lakes, 200 natural spring ponds, and three reservoirs. Despite being an offbeat destination in India, Arittapatti is slowly gaining recognition for its great historical value—the village is blessed with ancient megalithic structures, Tamil Brahmi inscriptions, carved Jain beds, and 2,200-year-old rock-cut temples! The Lake Anaikondan here was built under the reign of the Pandyan Kingdom back in the 16th century, by which you can spot over 75 species of birds , including three flagship raptor species—Laggar falcon, Shaheen falcon, and Bonelli’s eagle.
Getting There: Arittapatti is about half an hour’s drive from both Madurai Airport and Madurai Integrated Bus Terminus.
Stay: Just 45 minutes away by car, Heritage Madurai beckons with its historic charm. Lounge by the temple tank pool or luxuriate in a plunge pool in your own private villa. Doubles from INR 7,000.

These new airports will make bucket-list destinations more accessible
By Jessica Puckett
The most difficult leg of a trip—especially on long international journeys —is making that last flight connection or lengthy ground transfer to your final destination. Those final couple hours in transit, when the effects of jet lag are rearing up and patience is running thin, can be laborious and time-consuming, but are often necessary in order to reach some of the world's most remote destinations.
Now, a new crop of well-located airports seek to make some of these historically out-of-the-way regions more accessible to international travel. Forget about the shuttle bus or puddle-jumper flight: these eight new airports—which have either just opened or are currently under construction–will make it that much easier than ever to reach bucket-list destinations around the world.
Previously, most international travellers flew into Cancún and drove two hours in order to reach Tulum.
Tulum, Mexico
Thanks to the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, it is easier than ever for international travellers to reach the seaside escape of Tulum, one of Mexico 's most popular tourist hubs. The airport officially opened to domestic flights in December 2023 and will welcome international airlines beginning March 28, 2024. Multiple routes from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit will launch throughout the year. Previously, travellers would typically need to fly into Cancún and drive about 80 miles south to access Tulum, a two-hour road trip that the new facility will mercifully eliminate for many passengers.
Siem Reap, Cambodia
In November 2023, Cambodia inaugurated a brand new airport in Siem Reap, the gateway city to Angkor Wat, the UNESCO-listed ancient temple complex that’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The new airport, which replaces an older Siem Reap facility built in the 1930s, is about 25 miles east of the Angkor Wat temple complex. That’s further away from the archeological site than the original airport, which sat just over three miles away, but the new airport will make it easier for more tourists to access Angkor Wat. Thanks to its size, it can handle larger planes used on nonstop international flights and accommodate up to seven million passengers annually, with plans to grow that capacity to a whopping 40 million people per year by 2040.
The new Amalfi Coast airport opens this July, with the first flights operated by the Spanish airline Volotea.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Starting this summer, visiting the candy-colored buildings perched high above the azure waters of the Amalfi Coast will be less of a headache for travellers. That's because the popular tourist spot in Southern Italy is finally getting its own commercial airport. The town is converting what used to be a military airport, and later a private airport, to a facility to be used by everyday travellers. The first flights are set to take off on July 11 and will be operated by Spanish airline Volotea, with routes from Nantes, France , and Cagliri, Sardinia, according to CNN. However, the complete renovation is not scheduled to be complete until 2026, and other airlines and routes will be added along the way.
Nuuk, Greenland
In one of the country’s most significant moves to enhance tourism , Greenland is debuting a major expansion of the airport in its capital city, Nuuk. The new airport’s runway will be double the size of the old one—big enough to handle nonstop flights from destinations in North America and Europe . That means much more simplified travel for international visitors, who would previously have to transit through the small town of Kangerlussuaq. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by May 2024, with the full facility up and running by the end of November.
Dominica's first international airport is scheduled to complete construction by 2026.
The “ Nature Island ” of the Caribbean—Dominica—started construction on its first international airport in late 2023. It’s set to be one of the island’s largest construction projects ever. When it’s completed by 2026, the new airport will replace the current regional facility that has just three gates. By contrast, the international airport is slated to serve more than 20 airlines from the Caribbean, Europe , and North America, each of which will be able to fly directly to Dominica, the country’s prime minister said in 2022, making it easier for far-flung tourists to access the island without needing to make a connection.
Dominica is one of our Best Places to Go in North America & the Caribbean in 2024, part of our global guide to the Best Places to Go in 2024 —find more travel inspiration here .
Western Sydney, Australia
A second airport in Australia ’s capital is set to bring a host of advantages when it starts operations in 2026. The Western Sydney airport, also called Nancy-Bird Walton airport, is currently being constructed further inland from Sydney 's current airport. For locals who live farther on the outskirts, that means not having to trek all the way into eastern Sydney to catch your flight. For visitors, the airport’s location on the western edge of the city will be an ideal gateway for travellers wanting to explore the nearby Blue Mountains National Park, known for its striking cliffs, waterfalls, and unique sandstone formations. Plus, it could mean less crowded airport spaces, too. The facility on the opposite side of the city will also take some capacity pressure off of the current Sydney airport: Western Sydney airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers a year when it launches.
The Chinchero airport will serve as an international gateway to Machu Picchu, but it is not without its controversies.
Peru's Sacred Valley
For the more than 1.5 million travellers who visit Machu Picchu every year, a simpler transit option will be available starting in 2026: Chinchero airport, located smack dab in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Currently, international visitors to Machu Picchu usually must fly into Lima and connect to Cusco, which doesn’t accommodate many international flights and sits about 46 miles away from the archaeological site. They then must take a train the rest of the way. Chinchero airport will be able to serve nonstop flights from North America and major cities throughout South America and act as a direct gateway to Machu Picchu. The project is not without its controversies, however. Critics of the Chinchero airport say its construction is endangering ancient Incan archaeological sites, as activists voice concerns that the noise pollution from the planes and subsequent traffic will cause irreparable damage to the fragile environment.
Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan
The Himalayan Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan has announced it’s building a second international airport as part of an ambitious project to create a brand new modern city from scratch. The sustainable community, called Gelephu Mindfulness City, will see the construction of a new 1,000-square-kilometre economic and tourist hub near the current town of Gelephu, which sits on the country’s southwestern border with India . In addition to the new international airport, the large city will feature a new university, spiritual and cultural centers, and healthcare facilities. Although there is not yet a set date for the completion of the airport, when it opens it will be an important new option for tourists wishing to explore the southern and western regions of Bhutan, home to attractions like Royal Manas National Park and Phrumsengla National Park.

Petition For Air India To Begin Service At Dallas/Fort Worth Receives Nearly 4,000 Signatures
- Demand for direct flights from Dallas to India is high due to a significant Indian population in Texas.
- Air India has considered adding US destinations like Dallas in the recent past.
- With improvements in the carrier's operations, nonstop flights to Dallas may soon become a reality.
The United States continues to attract Indians for various reasons, be it economic opportunities or for higher education, among others. As such, demand for nonstop flights is present almost all year round. And while New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, DC are currently served with non-stop connections, other cities in the country are also demanding direct services.
Petition for Dallas-Hyderabad flight
The significant Indian population in Texas is voicing its opinions about the lack of a convenient way to travel back to India to meet their family and friends. A resident of Frisco, Texas, Venkat Mulukutla, has started a petition to request Air India to start a non-stop service between Dallas/Fort Worth and Hyderabad in South India.
The Indian-origin communities along the East and West Coast and the Midwest have convenient non-stop options to fly back to India, with Air India serving New York-JFK, Newark, Chicago, Washington, DC, and San Francisco. But for those living in Texas, the journey back home is often more than 20 hours, with a stopover at airport hubs in the Middle East or Europe.
Mulukutla’s petition says,
“We request Air India to start a Direct Flight from Dallas to Hyderabad. India. Dallas Fort Worth metroplex and surrounding areas are considered Telugu speaking Hub. Out of 400 thousand Indians in DFW at least 50- 60% are Telugu people. Every Year lot of Telugu students coming to Dallas to study while lot of Telugu including elderly parents are traveling to live with their children.”
He further adds that instead of first flying to places like Doha or Dubai, which are around 4-5 hours away from India, it would be better if Air India offered a nonstop service. The petition has already gained more than 3,700 signatures.
There have been some developments
Air India seems to be aware of the demand for such flights from the US. Not too long ago, Simple Flying reported that the carrier added three additional US destinations to its map – Dallas, Los Angeles, and Seattle. However, those plans did not materialize, and the airline never got around to announcing the routes.
Coming Soon? Air India Adds 3 US Destinations To Its Route Map
While we don’t know the exact reasons for their removal, the development did suggest that Air India is considering expanding into the US. Clearly, there’s demand for such flights, and the carrier would want to capitalize on the opportunity as part of its growth plans.
Possibility in the near future?
Air India has been planning more US flights for the longest time, but several factors – including the lack of enough widebody airplanes – halted those plans. However, there have been significant changes within the company since the Tata Group took over its operations. Several of its grounded widebody planes have been fixed and many more have arrived on leases.
The carrier primarily operates Boeing 777s on its US routes. It has acquired several of these planes on short-term leases and doubled down on existing US airports on its network. Perhaps with the new Airbus A350s, and more arriving soon, we could see more places in the US, including Dallas, appear within its international route network.

The ultimate guide to getting to and from New York City’s airports
Mar 29, 2024 • 10 min read
You can get to all of New York City’s three airports by public transport. Here’s what you need to know © Sergi Reboredo / VW Pics / Getty Images
If you’ve ever landed in New York City and splurged upward of $50 on an Uber to take you on from there, we salute your struggle.
So we propose another option: public transport. While this choice may seem daunting, in truth taking the train, subway and/or bus to and from the airport isn’t as scary as it seems.
And you might even get to your destination faster.
LaGuardia , John F Kennedy and Newark airports are all reachable via public transit – with NYC subways and buses to JFK and LaGuardia the cheapest option by far. However, since there’s no one-stop public-transit option to the center of town (as in many cities in Europe and Asia), a little bit of homework will go a long way toward making your journey as seamless as possible.
Here’s all you need to know about getting to and from New York City’s three airports. Even if you ultimately do choose to take that rideshare.

Getting to and from LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
Minimum cost: $2.90
By public transit, take either the 7 train to 111 St/Roosevelt Ave, then connect to the Q48 bus; the 7, E, F, M and R trains to Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Ave/74 St, then connect to the Q47 bus; or pick up the M60 SBS bus in Manhattan, which meets the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, A, B, C and D subway lines at 125 St, the 1 line at 116 St, and the Metro-North Railroad at Harlem–125 St.
The Q70 SBS also stops at LGA, with connections to the 7, E, F, M and R lines at 74 St/Roosevelt Ave and the LIRR’s Woodside station at 61 St/Roosevelt Ave.
There are designated spots for rideshare pickups and drop-offs at each terminal, as well as queues for yellow cabs. Taxi fares are metered to and from LGA, so the total will depend on the distance to or from the airport. A $1 surcharge applies on weekdays from 4pm to 8pm, and a $0.50 surcharge weekdays between 8pm and 6am. A $0.50 tax for trips within New York State and a $1.25 fee for pickups also both apply. Tips are additional; 15% to 20% is customary.
Local Lonely Planet staff tips on getting to LGA
“Going to LGA from lower Manhattan, I often take the L train to Williamsburg and then Uber from there. It’s both more cost-effective and usually faster. Honestly, the same applies for JFK – it’s just a bit further.” – Katharine Leitch, Director
“If there’s an airport you want to get to early, it’s LGA – not because you need to get through security (it’s the fastest of the three airports in my experience), but because it’s shiny, new and painless to be in. The bathrooms here are also stunning.” – Ann Douglas Lott , Associate Editor
“LaGuardia is a car service for me, but I use a local one instead of the big guys. It’s half the price – and if you pay in cash, it can be even cheaper. A popular one is Arecibo . There are others like Carmel and Dial 7 that only old-school New Yorkers like me know about, and while it’s a bit clunkier than Lyft or Uber, it’s so insanely cheap." – Brekke Fletcher , Senior Director of Content
“I am obsessed with the Q70 SBS (aka the “LaGuardia Link”). The Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Ave/74 St subway station is only 15 or 20 minutes from Midtown on the express subway; you can it pick up from a dedicated bus platform right where you get out. (No need to get a ticket – tap to pay when you board). The bus then takes a dedicated lane on the freeway to whisk you on to the airport; in good traffic, you’ll be at your terminal in 10 minutes. Oh, and if you have time, grab a bite at a Colombian, Tibetan or Indian restaurant in Jackson Heights en route. It’s really one of New York’s most exciting neighborhoods .” – Brian Healy , Contributing Editor
Getting to and from John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
Minimum cost: $11.40
Take a subway or commuter train to connect to JFK via the AirTrain, a dedicated people-mover system. First, take the MTA’s A train to Howard Beach or the E, J and Z to Sutphin Blvd; or the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Jamaica Station, departing from Penn Station or Grand Central in Manhattan, or Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal.
From there, the AirTrain , a shuttle on rails, will take you onward to the passenger terminals, airport parking lots, hotel shuttle pick-up areas and rental-car centers. The ride costs $8.50 to or from Howard Beach and Jamaica station; you can now a contactless method to pay the additional fare.
You can also take a city bus to JFK: the Q3 , Q6 , Q7 , Q10 , Q10 LTD and B15 lines all provide service to JFK.
Each terminal at JFK has designated spots for rideshare pickups and drop-offs, as well as queues for yellow cabs. (Note that due to major ongoing construction, these designated areas can be quite far from the terminals themselves.) Taxis charge a flat rate of $70 – not including tip or tolls – for trips between JFK and Manhattan, plus a $5 surcharge on weekdays from 4pm to 8pm, a $0.50 tax for trips within New York State and a $1.25 fee for pickups.
Local Lonely Planet staff tips on getting to JFK
“When ever I take the AirTrain to JFK, I try to stop at the TWA Hotel for a drink or a snack, regardless of which terminal I’m actually flying out of. You can’t really do that if you’re taking an Uber.“ – Laura Motta , Senior Director of Content
“If time is your main concern, cars are not faster. From my apartment in Brooklyn, I love taking the LIRR to Jamaica and the AirTrain. (It’s closer than Penn Station.) Another great option is the A train to Howard Beach. It’s trickier because you need to get on the correct A train, and sometimes it doesn’t run.” – Brekke Fletcher
“Certain terminals at JFK are undergoing construction for the foreseeable future, which means not all terminals are open for Ubers. By the time you get on the AirTrain to change terminals, you may as well just take the subway.” – Serina Patel
Getting to and from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Minimum cost: $6.25
The fastest route from Manhattan to Newark – located just across the river, in New Jersey – is usually via NJ Transit to the Newark Airport stop (about a 25-minute ride), then the AirTrain monorail on to your terminal. Your NJ Transit fare will include the $8.25 AirTrain access fee; scan your QR-coded ticket at the exit to connect to the AirTrain, on a separate platform. If you’re coming from points farther afield, Amtrak also serves the Newark Airport station, which is along its busy Northeast Corridor line.
If you’re not in a hurry, you can take the Port Authority’s PATH train from lower Manhattan to the end of the line, at Newark Penn Station. From there, switch to an NJ Transit train (this is a separate fare; purchase your ticket in advance with the app , or allow time to buy from a kiosk at on the station platform), then transfer to the AirTrain (as described above).
You can also take the PATH to a local or express NJ Transit bus – a longer but cheaper option, as well as an accessible one. NJ Transit trains only run between 5am and 1am, so you should plan to use the PATH or the #62 bus if you’re traveling outside those hours.
Taxis to and from EWR are pricey. If you take a taxi from EWR, there’s a $10 surcharge from the airport to all destinations in New York State on weekends (12pm to 8pm) and during weekday rush hours (6am to 9am; 4pm to 7pm). There’s also a $1.25 fee for pickups, a charge for each piece of luggage 24 inches or bigger, and a $5.50 surcharge for all credit card transactions. Yellow New York City taxi fares to EWR are subject to a flat $20 surcharge.
And don't forget about the tolls : whether you're driving yourself or taking a cab, the Port Authority charges a fee to enter New York by bridge or tunnel, starting at $12.75 per car at off-peak hours. (Traveling in the direction of New Jersey is always toll-free.) Since the pandemic, many toll plazas have suspended cash payments or gone fully cashless permanently, so you – or your driver – will need an E-Z Pass , unless you want to get hit with the bill later.
Local Lonely Planet staff tips on getting to EWR
“I go through Penn Station, where I love the new Moynihan Train Hall food court. I especially love Irish Exit . It’s by the same people as The Dead Rabbit , and I seriously go out of my way to stop there – they have great cocktails (also lots of beer, of course). And Pastrami Queen or Alidoro for sandwiches to go.” – Caroline Trefler , Destination Editor
"If I have to go to Newark, it’s only because the flight is cheaper and in a terminal that has a lounge (big win). Living in Williamsburg, sometimes it takes two hours and $100 to get to EWR in an Uber – and if you know driving in NYC, it means a 100% chance of getting carsick. If I have the time, I’ll take the M or F to the city and transfer to the PATH to Jersey City – then call an Uber from there.” – Serina Patel
“I actually really like the NJ Transit route to Newark, especially from Midtown. I used to plan all my flights to leave post-work so I could commute in and head to the airport afterward. I also would try to red-eye back and go straight into work to maximize travel time as much as I could...but that part’s not for everyone. That bit was always rough.” – Pia Peterson Haggarty, Photo Director
More tips for your journey
“I pick my flight based on the cost of travel to the airport and safety — because I don’t want to take my usual and very inexpensive AirTrain to the A train at 1am. So if I have to take a $100 Uber to get home on a cheaper flight because it’s super late or early, maybe it makes more sense to take the slightly more expensive flight during daylight.” – Deepa Lakshmin , Social Media Director
“For all of these, the Transit app is the most reliable when you’re not doing the usual routing. Also, stay away from yellow cabs. They charge lots of extra fees.” – Brekke Fletcher
“If you’re coming from Brooklyn, the best case is to fly out of LGA or JFK and take the A, C or J train and transfer to the AirTrain. It’s even nicer now that they take Apple Pay.” – Serina Patel
“I’ve saved so much money scheduling Ubers and Lyfts a day in advance, but it really depends on the time of day you will be en route to the airport. Rule of thumb: if it’s going to be rush hour, book ahead of time.” – Ann Douglas Lott
“I always take the train to the airport – since you always know how long it will take, even if that’s longer than by car (though with NYC’s horrendous traffic, that’s hardly a given). Then, after a long day of flying, I always splurge on a rideshare or taxi back home.” – Brian Healy
