The Grand Tour Hosts Are Racing Boats Through Cambodia and Vietnam in a New Special

This looks like one really watery adventure.

The Grand Tour , as we know it, is a car show. Its hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, do and talk about things that are usually, in one way or another, related to cars. The show's latest special takes things in a different direction.

That's right, this time around the British trio are challenging themselves to navigate Mekong Delta, a series of complex rivers, peninsulas, islands, and streams that snake throughout southern Vietnam, to see who can reach the other side the quickest.

The trailer gives us a good look at what sort of boat each of the hosts have chosen, and they're ask wacky as you'd expect. Clarkson shows up with a military-like service boat meant for police duty. May went for an older wooden boat that looks like it would be more suited to Lake Como than a Vietnam river. Hammond went for a full-on speed boat, complete with some extremely Nineties graphics.

As with any of The Grand Tour's specials, there are plenty of hilarious antics, close calls, and clever pranks in store. The full special will be available to Amazon Prime members on, December 13, 2019.

The Grand Tour “Seamen” – How we made it

After three seasons of The Grand Tour and 16 years on television together, there aren’t many parts of the world or outrageous challenges left for Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James to conquer. Seamen

However, just in time for Christmas, the boys have regrouped for a feature-length Grand Tour special, which takes them on what is arguably their biggest, and most definitely, their wettest adventure yet.

Through Cambodia and Vietnam, their aquatic road trip involves an 800km journey that starts on the perilous Tonlé Sap Lake, and weaves its way via a series of adventures and calamities down through the Mekong Delta. Seamen

Clarkson’s ride is a recreation of a Vietnam war-era PBR (Patrol Boat River), the famed military vessel seen in Apocalypse Now. Hammond channels his inner Don Johnson by opting for a Miami Vice style speedboat – of the HMS Pornography, as Clarkson christens it.

And May lives out his canal holiday fantasy dream with a classic 1939 wooden river cruiser. Seamen

Packing in a genuinely dangerous finale that brings one of the trio to tears, stomach-churning dinners and a shocking climate change admission from Clarkson, The Grand Tour presents Seamen is a road trip  voyage to remember.

Swapping four wheels for water

Grand Tour exec producer Andy WIlman admits that there were nerves about ditching cars and heading out onto the water for the special episode.

“Boats are a minority hobby, there’s no getting around that, whereas most people drive so they engaged more easily with cars,” said Wilman. “But it’s just one film. We’ll be back with cars next time. It’s just a small diversion to ring the changes. If we try something and it doesn’t quite work, nobody gets hurt, and that’s always our attitude.

“But actually a massive proportion of our audience are not fussed about cars. They watch for the locations, the banter, the adventure, the friendship between those three. And I think those people won’t care at all that they’re in boats. We are ready for criticism and we’re ready to go, ‘Calm down’. But hopefully we’ll surprise people because it’s a good watch.”

And it wasn’t hard to find three different boats that matched up with the presenters own personalities. Seamen

“There’s a James boat, a Jeremy boat, a Hammond boat,” said Wilman.

“James went for a Norfolk Broads, Michael Parkinson type of pleasure boat. It’s a gin and tonic, wearing-a-cravat boat. Because it was a river cruise, James wanted something built for a river. He’s pragmatic like that.

“Hammond expressed his disinterest in boats by being a child and getting a Miami Vice style speedboat that drug dealers have. He didn’t give much thought to the practicalities of his choice.

“And then there’s Jeremy, who is a boating man and has always liked boats. He also loves the Vietnam War so it doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together and realise he’s going to come out on a PBR.”

The climate change message

The Grand Tour boys show no signs of growing up on this adventure – From the title of the episode to Jeremy and James respraying Hammond’s boat with the name ‘Jizzle Drizzle’.

However, there is a message about climate change at the heart of this special. An admission and slight change of heart from the petrolheads.

“It’s our job to make a show for people who like cars, and we are a tiny percent in terms of our influence, is the reality. The climate change people do what they do well. So we get on with our job and they get on with theirs,” explained Wilman.

“But the whole river and lake thing you see on the show is absolutely binary, in front of our eyes. The people couldn’t fish. The Mekong is a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people and it’s dry, not helped by the fact the Chinese have built a dam which stops water flowing through. The Mekong is being threatened. Does it macke us hypocrites to point that out? I don’t think so, because I don’t think we’ve suddenly become Greta Thunberg.

“But we are in our right to point out that this whole thing is happening in a brutal and binary way. Critics might say, ‘Oh, you’re bothered about the Mekong River but you’re not bothered about driving a Ferrari’. I think our argument would be, ‘It’s not for us to worry about driving Ferraris because governments will decide whether or not people can drive them, and that’s not within our gift.’

“But what we saw in front of our eyes was worth talking about.”

For once – a warm reception

“We’ve had a less-than-warm welcome in some places we have been,” admits Richard Hammond.

It’s fair to say, the reputation of Clarkson, Hammond and May . often precedes them and wherever they travel . these days, they are typically . viewed with suspicion.

However, in Cambodia and Vietnam, . the trio were greeted with open arms and helped out of several tricky spots by the locals.

“In this part of the world, the attitude is so welcoming and friendly. I ended up being towed by a bunch of locals who saw me stuck,” said Hammond.

“People really do muck in and help and see the funny side. If you are at the back of your boat trying to cut the nets out of the prop, people will actually find that funny. They’ll laugh but they’ll still come and help you.”

James May admitted he even formed a special bond with one very helpful local who came to his aid in his hour of need.

“It’s a very hospitable, upbeat part of the world. In that kind of country they end up helping each other out,” said May.

“Especially on the water which is so important to them for their lives and their livelihoods. If you’re a foreigner and you’re being an idiot in a 1939 boat, . they’ll think, ‘Yes but he’s in trouble . so we’ll still get stuck in and help him’,” said May.

“I got a bit of net caught in the prop quite badly and a . local fisherman had the same problem so I went to help him and then he came to help me. I went around one side and he went around the other and we reached underneath and found each other’s hands and it was all very sweet.

“After an hour or two we eventually got both our boats free. The language barrier was complete and utter, but I had this moment of fantastic camaraderie with another man in peril on the sea. I loved it. He is my brother forever now.”

Battling sickness and fly-infested accommodation

It wasn’t all bromances at sea and plain sailing for our adventurers though. Richard Hammond had to battle a nasty infection after he caught cellulitis from open blisters on his heels.

“When it first struck I didn’t know what it was and I just couldn’t walk,” he said.

“The medic checked it out and told me I needed to be on very strong antibiotics quickly because it can creep into organs and turn into sepsis and that’s not good.”

“It felt like hell.”

And Clarkson described their first night on the lake on Cambodia as coming very close to the worst place they’ve ever stayed. Seamen

It was so bad that it will really wind him up if you mention that people believe the presenters don’t really sleep in the places where they film.

“There’s nothing more irritating than people saying, ‘You’re like Bear Grylls, you say you camp out there but you actually go and stay in a hotel’.

“I urge people to go on Google maps and see if they can find a hotel we could have gone to. Neither us nor the crew got a single second of sleep.”

Describing his evening, he said: “It was like sleeping in a fly-infested and extremely noisy oven at 400 degrees; if you filled your oven with every insect in the world, and then got in there with a pile driver and a deranged dog.

“You’d also have to crap your pants for the smell.”

A dangerous and tearful finale

The final stretch of the Seamen special is one of the . most dangerous and emotional sequences the presenters have ever filmed as they head out into open waters in their highly unsuitable vessels.

Filmed across a sea, close to where four people died . on the same day, Hammond was left in tears and May was briefly left stranded on his antique boat.

“If people want to see three TV presenters being . really hurt then this is a good place to go,” said Clarkson.

“My bruises lasted weeks. My boat was full of sharp edges and . I kept being hurled into those. It wasn’t much fun. Very close to where we were, four fishermen died. We weren’t exaggerating, they were big seas, it was scary.

“I can remember the panicky radio calls coming over my walkie-talkie. I was thinking, ’It’s bad but it’s not the end-of-the-world bad’. It was only when I saw the footage, particularly of James’ boat and the camera boats, that I . thought ‘Bloody hell.’ That’s the other thing of course: we can’t just think . about ourselves, there were 50/60 crew out there on small boats that were sinking. Boats were sinking, . I think Hammond may have been crying, and . James was stranded. I thought for once we were actually going to be . rid of James May but no, he survived.”

Hammond added: “At first it was the horrendous monotony of it, . just being bashed and bashed when water smashes against . the hull again and again. The sea water in my eyes – you see me at one point trying to pour bottled . water into my eyes to attempt to get the salt out. That was pretty close to despair.”

Andy Wilman confessed the production team were surprised . by the weather and the treacherous waters, which got “worse and worse and worse” as they filmed.

“Four people down the coast died that day,” said Wilman. “I don’t know any more details but I know it happened on that day. Driving on Death Road in Bolivia was terrifying psychologically, but mathematically you know . that if you stay away from the edge, you’re not going to go over. Whereas with the sea, you haven’t got a clue what it’s going to do, that’s the first thing.

“There’s no parallel with a road trip. It took several hours. It was properly brutal.”

Amazon has dropped the trailer for a special episode of The Grand Tour , featuring Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond in a boat-based challenge.

The trio of presenters have vacated their cars for the first time and embark on a 500-mile river trip across Vietnam and Cambodia, in an episode titled The Grand Tour presents: Seamen. It premieres on December 13.

The feature-length episode is the first in a sequence of specials the team is making for Amazon Prime Video after they decided last year to ditch The Grand Tour ‘s studio format, set in a tent, and concentrate on a series of adventures.

Although they have parked their cars, the Seamen episode features many familiar format points, from the presenters showcasing the boats they have chosen, to racing challenges, collisions and unfortunate break downs.

For their journey along the Mekong Delta, Clarkson recreates a Vietnam war-era Patrol Boat River, Hammond charters a Miami Vice -style speedboat, while May enjoys a 1939 wooden river cruiser.

Amazon’s director of European originals Georgia Brown said: “We know fans love to see the guys take on these incredible adventures across exotic locations and The Grand Tour presents: Seamen does just that – this feature-length special promises to be a thrilling off-road escapade, full of challenges and jeopardy, climaxing in one of the most dangerous and exciting challenges Jeremy, Richard and James may have ever endured.”

With Seamen launching in December, work is well underway on their second special, which has just finished filming in Madagascar and will premiere next year.

The grand tour: every special, ranked.

The Grand Tour has delivered many excellent specials, so we've ranked them to find out which one is best.

After Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May moved on from Top Gear , everyone wondered what their next adventure would take them. Happily,  The Grand Tour was soon announced by Amazon and was very similar to Top Gear in many ways. The main difference was the size of the budget given to the trio to spend per episode.

RELATED: The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Action Movies For Car Chases

Thanks to this large amount of money, Clarkson, Hammond, and May were able to produce more exciting and bigger scale episodes than they had ever done before. This resulted in special episodes becoming more and more frequent. Indeed, the fourth season of The Grand Tour will consist only of specials. To celebrate this, we've ranked all of the specials so far.

Operation Desert Stumble (Season 1, Episode 2)

In Season 1, viewers were still trying to adjust to the show's format. The first episode put their fears at ease (mostly) but the second episode had the unenviable task of introducing the traditional 'challenges' in a new light. Although it's not technically a special, "Operation Desert Stumble" was the show's first attempt at showing Clarkson, Hammond, and May outside of the tent being totally stupid.

Unfortunately, while a bit entertaining, the episode fell a bit flat. The series was trying too hard to be something different and resulted in the entire challenge feeling forced. The trio had to rescue hostages and take them to the embassy while fighting off insurgents. There was a distinct lack of vehicles present and even the banter felt wooden.

Sea To Unsalty Sea (Season 3, Episode 11)

The Grand Tour special episodes are known for their creativity, and also their hilarity, as they often involve the presenters using old cars or general vehicles and placing them well outside of their comfort zone. However, in this special, Clarkson, Hammond and May broke away from that formula and bought 3 grand touring cars for a drive from Georgia to Azerbaijan.

Since there were no real perilous obstacles for the trio to face, the whole episode felt a bit tame compared to their other adventures. There were still a couple of highlights, such as May breaking Stalin's cupboard and the 'real world race' but other than that, the episode just felt a bit dull. However, the stars of the show were, of course, the cars, which looked absolutely amazing.

International Buffoon's Vacation (Season 3, Episode 8)

This special was miles better than the previous entry but unfortunately, this space still had to be filled. Basically, Clarkson, Hammond, and May were told to go on holiday in the United States in RVs. Not willing to share, they each branched off and bought their own and modified them to their liking. May made his RV into a pub, Clarkson transformed his RV into a toilet/speedboat hybrid and Hammond bought a van and made it worse.

RELATED: 10 Hidden Details Everyone Missed In Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee

It's always fun to watch the presenters create obstacles for themselves, and there were a lot of things that went wrong in this special, which was a very good thing. However, the one constant thread that ruined an otherwise great Grand Tour special was the weird thing with Jeremy and the show's ex-racing driver, the American. It just felt incredibly forced and detracted from the episode's sense of fun.

Feed The World (Season 2, Episode 11)

Season 2 of The Grand Tour suffered a lot of incidents behind the scenes. Firstly, there was Hammond's near-fatal car crash, which he miraculously survived almost unscathed. Then Clarkson fell ill for a while and so as a result, Season 2 had a shortened episode count (although 11 episodes are still fairly impressive).

One of the drawbacks of this season, however, was that it only featured one special. To be fair, Season 1 had one special as well, but it took up two episodes. "Feed The World" was a sort of mini special but despite that, it was surprisingly good. Tasked with transporting fish, the boys still regained their childish sense of humor and the special was all the better for it.

Colombia Special (Season 3, Episodes 2 & 3)

This was the first special of Season 3 and it really set the stage for what was to come. It was a traditional special in every sense of the word as Clarkson, Hammond, and May were given the simple task of becoming wildlife photographers. The trio was in top form as they made constant jokes about Colombia's certain trading export, as well as being totally useless at actually taking photographs.

RELATED: 10 Best Car Movies To Watch If You Like The Fast And Furious Franchise

There were loads of great moments in these couple of episodes, such as Clarkson's encounter with a group of people who really liked donkeys and the trio's attempts at photographing the animals. There were also some highly dangerous obstacles, such as rackety old bridges and the king of all hailstorms. The only drawback of this special was that it started out fairly slow and didn't truly pick up the pace until the second act.

The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen (Season 4, Episode 1)

The most recent special on this list, "Seamen" was a welcome return to The Grand Tour , after the show had been off-air for almost a year. Currently, in its fourth season, the series decided to try something new with this special and so it ditched the car element in favor of boats. This idea was risky but they managed to pull it off. It helped as well that the specials had been less about the vehicles in recent years.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May were given the challenge of journeying across Cambodia and Vietnam by boat. Cue lots of swearing, jokes and basic faffing about. It was incredibly entertaining to watch, as the lads clearly had no control over their boats. Even Clarkson, who was the only one who remained enthusiastic about the challenge struggled to keep his boat under control. It made for a truly great episode.

The Beach (Buggy) Boys (Season 1, Episodes 7 & 8)

Season 1 of The Grand Tour was a fairly shaky start to the show. The main issue was that it was a car show fronted by Clarkson, Hammond, and May, yet it somehow had to be different from Top Gear . In this season, the show overdid it with the differences. There were some entertaining bits but a lot of the messing around felt forced.

The best episodes of the season by far were the two episodes dedicated to the Namibia special. This was the lads doing what they do best, and in this case, their best was racing beach buggies across a desert. Their banter was in top form, the scenery was amazing and there were some genuinely heart-stopping moments. This was exactly what you want from a Grand Tour special.

Survival Of The Fattest (Season 3, Episode 13)

This was an amazing episode. It had all the usual features that make a special, spectacular, but it had a unique twist that no one saw coming. Often, the presenters go ahead and buy a vehicle and modify it for their upcoming adventure, but here, they actually built their own car from scratch.

Once they had actually built their car, Clarkson, Hammond, and May still kept the laughs coming. From christening their car 'John', and watching it hop up hills, to Clarkson and May refusing to let Hammond drive due to his reckless history, this special literally could do no wrong. The fact that all three had to travel in the same car meant that there was a camaraderie present that we hadn't seen before either.

4 things we want to see from the final grand tour special.

Mike Bartholomew headshot

We don’t know a whole lot yet about the upcoming special that will conclude eight years of The Grand Tour , Amazon’s successor to Clarkson / Hammond / May era Top Gear . We know it takes place in Zimbabwe, we know it’ll air at some point later this year, and, thanks to some behind-the-scenes images, we know what cars it’ll feature (more on that below).

Apart from that, we’re in the dark. Fresh from the debut of the penultimate episode, Sand Job , we’ve had a bit of a think about what we’d like to see from the final episode, which will wrap up over two decades of car TV fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

It goes without saying, but here’s your fair warning anyway: this article contains spoilers for The Grand Tour: Sand Job, as well as the upcoming Zimbabwe special.

A return to cheaper, older cars

The earlier Top Gear specials followed the formula laid out by the regular show’s cheap car challenges: the presenters were given a pithy sum of money and told to buy a car. This led to some pretty memorable, plucky cars: Clarkson’s breakdown-prone Lancia Beta, May’s remarkably tough Volvo 850R and, of course, Oliver, the Opel Kadett. The fact that the three presenters tended to gravitate towards very different types of cars often lent the episodes a pleasingly mismatched, ramshackle feel too.

The Grand Tour: Carnage a Trois

The idea of having a budget was quietly dropped for the Patagonia special, something that was carried over to The Grand Tour. It reached the point with Sand Job where they were traversing the Sahara desert in a selection of professionally modified, fairly modern open-top grand tourers. While it was deeply impressive to see the sort of abuse these complex cars could stand up to, it also felt a little like they lacked a little of the personality of some of the older, more beat-up cars seen in earlier specials (Hammond’s sentient Aston Martin notwithstanding).

Obviously, it’s far harder now to pick up interesting cars for a couple of grand than it was even five years ago, but even so, a return to some older, less high-end metal wouldn’t go amiss. Happily, it seems our wishes might be granted on this one: the few behind-the-scenes shots that have emerged of the Zimbabwe episode show that the featured cars are a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, Ford Capri and Triumph Stag.

Less predictability

Look, we’re not here to moan about either Top Gear or The Grand Tour being ‘too scripted’. That dead horse has been well and truly beaten by people on the internet, and quite frankly, anyone who truly believed either show was a free-flowing, non-scripted slice of reality in their latter years probably needs to take a good long look at themselves.

The Grand Tour: Lochdown

We mean the things that are included in those scripts. A perilous water crossing was entertaining when it was on a shaky homemade raft in Tanzania, but after building a rickety bridge over the River Kok in Thailand and a ‘floating road’ across a sound in Scotland, it’s diminishing returns each time, until we arrive at the rafts used to cross the river near the end of Sand Job. It’s entertaining, but we can’t help feeling we’ve been here before.

The TG and TGT specials have always leaned into set pieces like these, but the most memorable ones tend to be the least expected: a cow on the roof of a Chevrolet Camaro, a race around an ancient Roman chariot arena, a terrible waxwork of Nigel Mansell being met with misfortune after hilarious misfortune – you get the point.

More beauty and culture

Farcical and chaotic as they can be, Top Gear and The Grand Tour’s specials have always made a point of showing off the natural beauty, local flavour and welcoming people of the countries they visit. You can see it everywhere from the American South to the Scottish Highlands, but it’s most prominent in countries where most viewers’ perceptions are coloured by either what they’ve seen on the news or been told about in history lessons: Vietnam, Iraq, Rwanda and so on.

The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt

In other cases, it’s nations that we simply don’t really know anything about. We couldn’t have told you much about Mauritania before we watched Sand Job, but one of the absolute highlights of the episode was when the trio visited the capital city, Nouakchott, and looked at some of the astoundingly clapped-out cars that are kept on the road.

The big specials have always been filled with absolutely stunning scenery too – again, we direct you to the ending sequence of Sand Job, with the cars flying down the beach to the epic soundtrack of M83’s ‘Outro’. We hope for, and expect, more of the same from the Zimbabwe episode. The specials have always done a brilliant job of making the setting feel like an active part of the show, not just a backdrop.

A proper send-off

Once the Zimbabwe special is out, it’ll be the first time since 2003 that there hasn’t been a car show presented by Clarkson, Hammond and May either on TV or in the works (barring a few months of uncertainty in 2015 following Clarkson’s dismissal from the BBC). That’s a significant thing for a good couple of generations of car enthusiasts who grew up watching them, and whose car enthusiasm might not have burned as bright without hearing the opening riff of ‘Jessica’ on a Sunday evening or eagerly waiting for the new Grand Tour episode to drop.

The Grand Tour: Seamen

It’s not really the trio’s style to get overly sappy about this sort of thing, but it would be remiss of them to not at least acknowledge the impact they’ve had on car culture for the last two decades.

We got something similar at the end of the final studio episode of The Grand Tour, but even then we already knew we had a few more years’ worth of specials to look forward to. This time, it’s a much more significant ending and, with Top Gear’s future totally up in the air, it means there’ll be no broadly popular big-budget car telly at all for the first time in a long time. That’ll be a strange thing indeed, and we hope it’s treated with the gravity it deserves.

Good Morning Vietnam: The Vietnam Road Trip Special

One of the best indications that you have a solid presenting team is to take them out of their element and see if they’re still entertaining. The Vietnam Special from Top Gear Series 12 was one such occasion as it took Jeremy, James, and Richard away from the world of cars and onto three of the most rickety, beat up motorcycles that I have ever seen. The fact that it quickly became one of my all time favorite episodes speaks volumes about how entertaining the three boys are.

The episode had everything a good Top Gear episode needed; it had pranks between the hosts (Richard’s ship was awesome), bumbling moments of ineptitude (James’ colander and Jeremy trying to start his bike come to mind), tasteless jokes regarding the war, and jaw-dropping backdrop of gorgeous Vietnam scenery.

This single episode had some of my favorite moments in all of Top Gear/The Grand Tour history. Jeremy and James trying out snake bile vodka was one of them, and Richard’s subsequent face at everything Vietnam had to offer was another. The grueling train ride in what appeared to be ungodly heat and humidity made me cringe (I don’t do well in heat). The three gifts the boys got for each other were, well, exactly what I expected. Also, I couldn’t help but wonder how badly Jeremy must have smelled when he got that massage (those poor ladies).

The motorcycle driving test segment was hilarious as well, and even though it was clear that Jeremy speaking Vietnamese was scripted, it was still a funny surprise. The one segment of the episode that absolutely blew my mind away, however, was the final portion when the boys had to convert their bikes into boats and sail through a stunning network of islands. It was truly beautiful to see nature’s sense of style as they weaved in and out between the islands of Ha Long Bay:

grand tour vietnam special

It’s an absolutely gorgeous sight that I can stare at for the rest of my life, and the scenery easily is as stunning as any other in Top Gear history. Besides the scenery, this special was one of the earliest episodes that I can remember that eschewed hijinks with cars and focused more on the three presenters themselves. After all is said and done and 22 seasons of Top Gear are ready for my viewing, the Vietnam Special is one of a handful that stick out in my mind. It is truly one of the greats.
