Useful information for planning your holiday in Japan

General Information Capital City : Tokyo People : Japanese Language : Japanese Currency : Japanese Yen Time Zone : UTC +9 Hrs International Dialing Code : +81 Passport and visa If you are a citizen of one of the over 50 countries with which Japan has a “general visa exemption arrangement”, you need only a valid passport to enter Japan as a “temporary visitor”. The list of countries eligible for visa exemption are listed here. Otherwise, you need to obtain a visa before entering the country. Temporary visitors from most countries are allowed to stay for up to 90 days. All foreign tourists in Japan are required to carry their passports at all times. USA citizens: https://jp.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/ UK citizens: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/japan/entry-requirements AUS citizens: http://australia.or.jp/en/visa/ Currency The Japanese currency is the Yen. Notes come in 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen (very rare), 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen denominations. Coins come in 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen denominations. Cash is still the preferred payment method, especially when it involves small amounts. However, there is an increased acceptance of credit and debit cards, especially in big cities. Most hotels accept payment by credit cards nowadays, as do most department stores, mid to high-end restaurants, outlet malls and large retail shops. Phones & Internet service There are various ways to stay connected to the internet while travelling in Japan. A majority of hotels in Japan offer free internet in their guest rooms. Both paid and free wireless (Wi-Fi) hotspots are available in Japan. Laptops and mobile devices can connect to publicly accessible hotspots found around airports, train stations, hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. Those who wish to use their own mobile phones or tablets to directly access the internet in Japan can get rental or prepaid SIM cards that allow for unlimited internet access via the cellular phone network.

Weather The Japanese are proud of their four seasons (and an astonishing number of them are firmly convinced that the phenomenon is unique to Japan), but travellers with a flexible schedule should aim for spring or autumn. Spring is one of the best times of year to be in Japan. The temperatures are warm but not hot, there’s not too much rain, and March-April brings the justly famous cherry blossoms (sakura) and is a time of revelry and festivals for Japanese people. Summer starts with a dreary rainy season in June and turns into a steambath in July-August, with extreme humidity and the temperatures as high as 35C. Autumn, starting in September, is also an excellent time to be in Japan. Temperatures and humidity become more tolerable, fair days are common and fall colors can be just as impressive as cherry blossoms. However, in early autumn typhoons often hit the southern parts of Japan and bring everything to a standstill. Winter is a good time to go skiing or hot-spring hopping, but as some buildings lack central heating, it’s often cold indoors. There is usually heavy snow in Hokkaido and northeast Japan due to the cold wind blasts from Siberia. Public Holidays The following is a list of all Public Holidays in Japan. For these dates most businesses will be closed and conditions of travel may be affected.     New Year’s Day : Jan 1     Coming of Age Day : 2nd Monday of Jan     Foundation Day : Feb 11     Vernal Equinox Day : Mar 20 or 21     Showa Day : April 29     Constitution Memorial Day : May 3     Greenery Day : May 4     Children’s Day : May 5     Marine Day : 3rd Monday of July     Mountain Day : August 11     Respect for the Aged Day : 3rd Monday of Sep     Autumnal Equinox Day : Sep 22 or 23     Health and Sports Day : 2nd Monday of Oct     Culture Day : Nov 3     Labour Thanksgiving Day : Nov 23     The Emperor’s Birthday : Dec 23

Tokyo Japan’s bustling capital is a perfect combination of ultra modern and traditional Japanese culture. Tokyo has everything to offer: from high-tech skyscrapers, hidden shrines, and a vibrant food scene, to the weird and wonderful fashion world of Shibuya and Harajuku. Tokyo is the typical gateway into Japan and is home to the Buffalo Tours Office. It also has easy access to Hakone, Kamakura and Nikko for day trips.   Kyoto All the most iconic sites of Japan are in Kyoto and should have pride of place on all itineraries. With over 3,000 temples and shrines, and beautifully preserved entertainment districts, it is a fantastic introduction to Japan’s traditional Geisha and Samurai culture. Many people come to Kyoto and dress in traditional kimono/yukata, and it is the best place to take part in a Tea Ceremony. Kyoto is well placed to visit Osaka, Kanazawa and Takayama. Takayama Takayama is an old town in the Japanese Alps with a very distinct culture and dramatic scenery. The distinct architecture of Shirakawago town is an easy day trip from Takayama and is beautiful in any season, including winter. The best way to get there is from Tokyo then onwards to Kyoto or Kanazawa.   Kanazawa Nicknamed ‘Little Kyoto’, Kanazawa offers the same rich cultural heritage but on a smaller scale. It is one of the best places to learn about traditional Geisha, Samurai and Zen cultures, with many original districts still thriving. A new Shinkansen rail line has opened recently, linking Kanazawa directly with Tokyo. Osaka Delve into the past with some of Japan’s best museums and race into the future on the loud, bright and modern streets of Osaka. This unassuming city has a lot to offer including, Shogun era castles, Universal Studios and some of the best food in Japan. It is only 30 minutes to Kyoto by train and also the gateway to Koyasan.   Hiroshima The city of Hiroshima is, sadly, most famous for the moment it became the first city targeted with an atomic bomb. Today you can pay your respects and learn more at the fantastic Peace memorial Park and Museum. Hiroshima is also the gateway to the idyllic Miyajima island and its floating Tori Gate. These destinations make a perfect overnight trip from Osaka.

Discover ancient Japan From Kyoto’s well-preserved entertainment districts, to the Samurai neighbourhood of Kanazawa and walking with a Sumo Wrestler in Tokyo, understanding the Japan of old is a vital part of travel in the region. As well as the unique subcultures of the Geisha, Sumo and Samurai, learn about the Edo period and zen and Buddhist philosophies too.   Watch a Sumo practice Delve into the Sumo world with a visit to a Sumo Stable to observe their daily practice. Learn about how the Stable acts as a training ground and shared living space for communities of wrestlers and observe their serous practice up close and personal. This intimate experience with Japan’s national sport is an unforgettable experience.   Live the Geisha Experience Explore the Gion Geisha district of Kyoto in the most local way you can, in a traditional kimono! Be fitted and styled before embarking on your walk around the Gion District, learning about how the Geisha live. The pictures you take on this tour will be unforgettable. Buffalo Tours offer this experience in Kyoto , as well as Tokyo. Take part in a tea ceremony From Yasaka Shrine next to Gion make your way through the preserved Higashiyama Temple District. Take part in a Japanese tea ceremony in a traditional home before visiting a neighboring Zen temple garden with original tea houses.

Ski Japan – Best of Nagano

If you are looking for an epic alpine adventure this winter, then Hakuba is one of the very best destinations in Asia if not the world. Host to the Winter Olympics in 1998, the ski resorts in Japanese alps compares favourably with the best resorts in Europe and North America. With a staggering 11m of snowfall annually (almost 4 times snowfall of leading resorts in the French Alps) there are more fresh tracks to be had and more bumper powder days to enjoy that most could resorts dream of. Only its competitor resort Niseko in the north Island of Japan can beat Hakuba in terms of regular powder snowfall. But, whilst Niseko may get heavier snowfall, the 10 resorts side by side in the Hakuba valley (sharing a common All-Mountain lift pass and with free shuttle buses between each) offer a more compelling range of terrain and slopes to explore.

A resort for all levels from beginner to advanced, you can choose from selection of 10 ski resorts, 137 ski lifts, 9 terrain parks, night skiing until 10pm and an endless choice of hiking trails. Also, the apres ski bars and restaurants in Hakuba village is known across the world for its fine cuisine and distinctly Japanese cultural experience (including a choice of 12 local onsens to soak your muscles after a hard day of riding the mountain)!

Enjoy sci-fi cityscapes, tranquil green tea plantations and placid, eternal lakes in Japan

Japan is a land where the future meets the past. You’ll find ancient customs and craftsmanship woven together with cutting-edge modern technology and futuristic fashions in this 6,800-island volcanic archipelago.

The dazzling capital of Tokyo is often people’s first introduction to Japan and to say it is an assault on the senses is an understatement. This is a city that moves at an astonishing rate but take the time to step back and you’ll discover that just like any big city around the world, there is a more sedate side waiting to be explored. Other cities, such as Kyoto and Kanazawa , while by no means small, have an altogether more relaxed feel thanks to their beautiful castles, pagodas and quaint wooden buildings. In Kyoto it’s not uncommon to see kimono-clad geisha shuffling along the narrow streets, a reminder this is a country where traditions are still embedded in everyday life.

A patchwork of bamboo forests, sparkling lakes and hot springs, Japan’s beautiful countryside provides the perfect antidote to its frenetic cities. Here it’s all about taking the time to appreciate the natural environment and really tuning into yourself.

And then of course there’s the food. Without a doubt one of the highlights of any trip Japan, every meal offers something special. From fresher-than-fresh sushi to steaming bowls of ramen and crunchy tempura, there is so much to look forward to.

Let Jacada help you to discover this diverse region with a seamless and personalised itinerary. Take a look at our example itineraries for inspiration, and then speak to our Japan Travel Designers to start planning your own tailor-made trip.

Rachel O’Leary

Travel Designer

Travel to Japan just for the food. The emphasis on excellent, farm-to-table fare is second only to Italy, but with very different flavours. When you’re there you’ll be blown away by the striking countryside, the bright and manic cities, the depth of their customs and traditions and the serenity of the temples and gardens. It’s an intriguing and unique country of contrasts and one that everyone should visit during their life.

Where to go

Endowed with more than its fair share of natural beauty, Hakone in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park is a town with water at its heart.

Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

Hiroshima has emerged from its nuclear past as a thriving and internationally minded community.

Ise Shima National Park

From its magnificent vistas, to its peaceful coves, to it’s stark mountains and dense forest, the park is a cultural and culinary landmark in Japan.

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

Jigokudani is the ultimate and privileged location to watch snow monkeys interact, bond and just chill out.

A thriving historical centre, Kanazawa escaped destruction in World War II leaving it standing as a beautifully preserved example of medieval Japan.

Kyoto is where you’ll find ancient and contemporary Japan collide in a fascinating cultural hub.

The charming town of Matsumoto offers an attractive departure point for hikes in the beautiful deep mountain domain of Kamikochi.

Mount Fuji is Japan‘s highest mountain, a picture-perfect snow-capped cone that dominates the landscape of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park

Revered as a dwelling place of the gods since ancient times, Mount Koya rises mysteriously from the Kii peninsula.

Its laid back pace, beaches and bright weather give it a wonderfully Mediterranean atmosphere, but it’s art enthusiasts more so than sun-seekers that flock here.

With a dreamy subtropical climate and some of the best beaches in Japan, most come to Okinawa for its sunny weather and beachside relaxation.

Osaka is a full bodied metropolis brimming over with contemporary architecture, animated nightlife and delicious street food.

Sado Island

Sado is a rural summer getaway of rocky coasts, green hills and quaint fishing ports far away from the frenzy of the mainland.

A wonderful place to appreciate some of Japan’s most beautiful natural scenery and sacred sites.

Takayama's remote location means that it’s remained somewhat isolated from the rest of Japan, creating and conserving a unique cultural character.

A city of excitement and bright neon lights set against the backdrop of the vast and towering Mount Fuji.

Yamashiro and Yamanaka

For more than a thousand years, Japanese holiday makers have been coming here to sooth body and mind in their warm therapeutic waters.

Responsible travel

Our luxury trips are designed with responsible travel principles that prioritise travel experiences that are both good for you and good for the planet.

Our trip was to Thailand, Cambodia and Singapore. This is the second trip we plan with Jacada and they have both been outstanding. We were two couples travelling and we are very appreciative of the hotel and tours recommendations we received on the planning stage and the flexibility and courtesy of the local tour guides whom accommodated all our requests.…

I've traveled a lot, but never like this! My recent trip to Japan with Jacada exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Working with Lauren and Leanne was easy right from the beginning, and they truly turned it into the most effortless and relaxing vacation I've ever experienced. There's no way I would have ever been able to plan a trip…

Our experience with Jacada was wonderful. We worked with Rosanna and Cathy who assisted in planning our honeymoon to Japan and Thailand. We wanted a trip that would highlight the amazing food that both countries had to offer, and we were not disappointed! Our trip was filled with food tours, cooking classes, and even more experiences that we will never…

I can't recommend Jacada enough! If you want a curated and hassle free trip, do it with them! They planned all details and gave us plenty of info leading up to the trip that we really didn't need to do much ourselves. We decided to use them for a culture/food trip through Japan and it was beyond exceptional! The best!

Absolutely seemless experience. A perfectly planned trip to Japan. Would definitely use them again and have been raving about them since I’ve returned. Charlie and Gilda were amazing.

Plan with peace of mind

When you book a trip in today’s world there’s a lot to think about. But with the right advice and expert planning, you can do it with confidence.

If you book to travel with us but your plans are impacted by circumstances you can’t control, we’ll change your reservation or cancel your booking for a full credit towards future travel.

Japan's Hotspots

Kyoto was once Japan’s capital city and the largest city in Japan. It is no surprise then, that it is filled with endless things to do. Arrive in style on a bullet train – reaching speeds of 200 mph. Spend your days wandering through soaring bamboo groves, amble through moss-covered Japanese gardens or admire some of the 3,000 temples and shrines that Kyoto is home to, many nestled amongst the shores of the Kamogawa River.

Hiroshima & Miyajima

Hiroshima is the capital of the Chugoku region in the South West of Japan. Despite the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city in 1945, the city is flourishing and is a fascinating inclusion to a Japanese trip.

Our Asia trips are looked after by our Global Sales Director, Pete, so you couldn’t be in better hands. He will look after you start to finish using his expert knowledge of the continent to create a holiday you’ll remember forever.

Japan Experience

Frequently Asked Questions

What departure times are available for Japan tours?

Japan Experience does not provide air tickets for tours. Departures are therefore flexible, and you can leave from wherever you prefer: Paris, Brussels or elsewhere. On a self-guided tour, you can choose the departure date that suits you best to discover the wonders of Japan. In the case of a small group tour, departure dates are fixed, so those interested are asked to arrange their own flights to arrive on the tour departure date.

How many nights are included in a Japan tour?

Our Japan tours vary in length, generally comprising between 7 and 21 nights.

What are Japan's must-see destinations?

Each tour combines must-see stops with lesser-known destinations to offer a unique discovery experience. Highlights include cosmopolitan cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, historic sites such as Hiroshima, and timelessly elegant regions and cities such as Kyoto and Nara.

Here's a description of some key cities:

  • Tokyo is the contemporary city par excellence, with its impressive skyscrapers and frenetic pace. This Japanese metropolis offers a unique urban experience, harmoniously blending ancestral traditions with futuristic innovations.
  • Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, is a timeless destination that charms visitors with its rich cultural and historical heritage. Its majestic temples, Zen gardens and traditional districts bear witness to the beauty and elegance of the imperial era.
  • Osaka is a dynamic, cosmopolitan city, renowned for its delicious cuisine. Nights here are particularly lively. Its historic castle and ultramodern aquarium are must-see attractions for visitors.
  • Okinawa, a tropical archipelago in southern Japan, offers heavenly beaches and a unique culture influenced by its proximity to China and the Philippines. Lovers of scuba diving and snorkeling will find exceptional seabeds here.
  • Nara, Japan's first permanent capital, is famous for its deer park and thousand-year-old temples, including Tōdai-ji, home to a gigantic bronze Buddha. The city offers a journey back in time to Nara, the cradle of Japanese culture.
  • Hiroshima, a symbol of peace and resilience, is a moving destination where the Peace Memorial recalls the horrors of the atomic bomb. Nearby, the island of Miyajima enchants visitors with its Itsukushima Shrine and its famous torii floating on the waters of the Seto Inland Sea.

How do you immerse yourself in Japanese culture on a Japan tour?

Our Japan tours are designed to offer total immersion in Japanese culture. Travelers will discover the traditional architecture, Zen gardens, temples and shrines that dot the Land of the Rising Sun. They'll also have the chance to sample must-try Japanese culinary specialties during typical lunches, and explore the creative art scene of this multi-faceted country.

Are there routes to the mountains? To the beach? Visit islands?

Yes, some of our tours include visits to iconic mountains such as Mount Fuji, Mount Koya and the Japanese Alps. You can also explore the country's islands, such as Miyajima Island, famous for its floating torii, or Shikoku Island, rich in temples and breathtaking natural landscapes. The island of Naoshima, meanwhile, is home to the famous pumpkin of the creative Yayoi Kusama, an iconic contemporary Japanese artist.

How do I book a tour?

It's very simple and easy, just book directly online through our website:

(1) Choose the tour of your choice, your departure date and indicate the number of participants. Several options are available to you. (2) Pay a deposit of 35% of the total amount* online and confirm your reservation. (3) You will then receive an e-mail confirming the conditions of your registration. When to go to Japan?

There are 4 seasons in Japan.

Spring , from the end of February to the end of May, is a mild season suitable for all kinds of activities. It is of course the period when sakura (cherry trees) bloom, the perfect occasion to admire them (hanami). Their blooming period is between March 20 and April 10 for Tokyo and Kyoto areas, while it is possible to admire them earlier in the south of the country and later in the north. The cherry blossom period is very popular and generates a lot of crowds. However, there are other beautiful flowers that bloom during this season: plum blossoms, with their sparkling pink at the end of February; fabulous azaleas in April-May; hydrangeas of all colors or irises during June.

Summer , from June to August, is generally synonymous with heat with a rainy season in the last two weeks of June during which you can expect rain several days a week. During this very hot and humid season, it is possible to enjoy fireworks (hanabi) in July and August, as well as matsuri , traditional Japanese festivals. Among the most famous are the Gion matsuri, which is held in Kyoto in mid-July or the Obon Matsuri in mid-August.

Then comes the high wind season (taifu) , which reaches its peak between August and September, but it is not necessary to avoid going during this period. Indeed, there is little chance that they will involve changing your travel plans, few of them even reaching the main island.

Autumn , from September to November, is the season when temperatures are generally the most pleasant, quite similar to the continental European climate. It is also the season when the country is decorated with red tones and when one can admire the momiji (literally red leaves) which are usually visible in Tokyo, Kyoto and their region during the last two weeks of November.

Finally, winter, from December to February, is the coldest season but also the opportunity to admire the striking beauty of winter landscapes . December is a period of calm before the holiday season, while January is marked by a drop in temperature and the presence of a number of festivals. In central Japan, temperatures usually range from -4 to 10°C. In the mountains and the north of the country, temperatures drop significantly, while in Kyushu and Okinawa, winter tends to be milder.

The most touristic periods are :  - in February, the 10 days around the Chinese New Year, which marks a strong influx of tourists from all over Asia; - between the end of March and the beginning of April, the cherry blossom period; - between the end of April and the beginning of May, during the "Golden Week", a period with many public holidays and during which many Japanese go on vacation; - mid-August, during the Obon Matsuri; - at the end of November, the best period to observe the momiji; - early January, for the New Year, when many businesses and activities are closed.   So, if you want to go during a less crowded period, Japan Experience recommends you to go : - in February, outside the Chinese New Year period, for the cool but nevertheless pleasant weather and the splendid blooming of plum trees, before the cherry trees; - between mid-May and early June, to take advantage of the mild weather, lower traffic and the blooming of hydrangeas, azaleas and irises; - from September to early December, to take advantage of good temperatures, a reasonable level of tourism and the momiji period in late November.

Are meals included in the circuits?

It all depends on the tour you've chosen. Some include breakfast only, especially on free-ride tours, while others include all meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals may also vary according to the stage, with dinner included on certain evenings, for example a night in a ryokan in the Japanese Alps.

Tailor Made Tours & Holidays in Japan

Traveling on your terms.

A tailor made tour is much more than just a custom program. It means traveling on your terms in virtually any aspect of a tour, including the dates of travel, food preferences, room arrangements, and free time activities.

We have extensive insider’s knowledge on Japan thanks to our experience. Specializing in designing tailor made tours in Japan, our local team of professionals has served thousands of satisfied clients from around the world.

Japan Tailor Made Tour - when should I consider it?

When you have exhausted common customization options available for our pre-made tour programs and realized that you need a program designed from scratch., when you want to visit very specific destinations, and you have not found anything close to what you need in our tour catalog., when you have a lot of dietary restrictions or lifestyle requirements that pre-made tour programs cannot account for., when you dislike limits, and budget is not a concern in getting the exact kind of vacation you want., when you cannot afford any possible oversight, and you need professional input and involvement for every single detail., for example, special occasion.

A once in a lifetime trip, like a honeymoon or a present for someone important.

Personal responsibility

An arrangement whose each aspect and outcome you are directly or personally responsible for.

Niche requirements

Why do i choose ilovejapantours as my tailor, satisfaction, local expertise, lifetime investment, what our customers say about us, okay, i need you to tailor me a tour. what do i do, submit a request, give us a couple of days, have a short session with our specialist, check out our proposal, give us your feedback, we start crafting your original tour, your tour is now ready, what does the tailor-making process look like, stage 1: route design, stage 2: accommodation and rooming, stage 3: meal planning, stage 4: additional activities, stage 5: fine-tuning and adjustments, frequently asked questions.

Tailor-made tours open up a lot of possibilities, but there is a list of things to consider:

  • There are logistical limitations that may prevent us from including all the desired destinations and activities within the given timeframe
  • Japan is a country of many rigid rules and regulations regardless of a person’s economic or social status
  • Many unique places have a small capacity, which cannot accommodate beyond a set number of people
  • Some places are not compatible with certain methods of transportation, or certain lifestyle requirements
  • Many places require early reservations, and observe strict deadlines and inflexible cancellation policies
  • Some destinations and events have seasonal restrictions, where they cannot accept booking outside of the specified date or time

Taylor Swift performs at the Melbourne cricket ground: she is wearing a sparkly leotard-type garment with knee-length silver high-heeled boots, and is singing in front of a pink-lit backdrop

Singapore sought exclusivity deal over Taylor Swift concerts in south-east Asia, Thai PM alleges

Srettha Thavisin claims promoter told him Singaporean government offered ‘subsidies’ of $2m-$3m a show

Thailand’s prime minister has claimed that Singapore sought a deal with Taylor Swift to prevent her from playing elsewhere in south-east Asia on her Eras tour.

Srettha Thavisin said the concert promoter AEG had informed him that the Singaporean government offered subsidies of US$2m-$3m (£1.6m-£2.4m) a show as part of an exclusivity agreement.

Swift is playing six sold-out shows at the 55,000-seat National Stadium in Singapore in March.

“[AEG] didn’t tell me the exact figure but they said the Singapore government offers subsidies of between $2m and $3m,” Srettha said publicly at a business forum in Bangkok. “But the Singaporean government is clever. They told [organisers] not to hold any other shows in [south-east] Asia.”

AEG did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Singapore government said the Singapore Tourism Board had supported the event through a grant. It said it “recognised that there will be significant demand from Singaporeans as well as fans across the region for her to perform in Singapore, and worked directly with AEG Presents for Taylor Swift to perform in Singapore”.

Swift’s fans across south-east Asia were bitterly disappointed when it was announced last year that she would skip most of the region and stop only in Singapore during her Eras tour. Even for those with the means to travel to see her, securing tickets was difficult; many fans enlisted family members and friends to register on their behalf and waited for hours in online queues.

In addition to Singapore, Japan and Australia are also included in the tour. Those lucky enough to have secured a ticket for Singapore have planned long and expensive journeys – in some cases involving boat, bus and plane – to see her. South-east Asia is home to many loyal Swift fans, with Quezon City in the Philippines once listed by Spotify as being home to the fifth-biggest number of her listeners in a ranking of global cities.

The Singapore concerts are expected to bring a major boost to the tourism sector, and Swift’s visit has been celebrated by officials. The minister for community, culture and youth, Edwin Tong, said when the tour dates were announced that it was an example of the calibre of events Singapore was targeting “to augment our offerings to Singaporeans and tourists alike”.

Elsewhere in south-east Asia, fans have previously blamed factors ranging from poor infrastructure to political instability and attitudes among conservative Muslim groups for the lack of tour dates.

Many Thai Swifties recall how the singer had to cancel her 2014 concert in Bangkok after the military coup by the former prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. In Malaysia, there are fears that it could become harder for foreign artists to perform , after an outcry over a same-sex kiss between members of the 1975 at a concert in July.
