Oral-B iO Series 9 review

The smartest electric toothbrush around, if you can handle the price.

Oral-B iO Series 9

TechRadar Verdict

The Oral-B iO Series 9 is a pleasure to use, quietly gliding across each tooth to remove tough plaque, and offering genuinely useful real-time feedback to help ensure you do as thorough a job as possible. You'll get the most out of this brush if you use Oral-B's companion app to monitor how you're cleaning each surface, but the brush itself gives you plenty of guidance if you don't have time to check your phone. This all comes at a cost, and the iO Series 9 is one of the priciest electric toothbrushes around. It has dropped in price substantially since launch though, and can help you develop better habits and technique that should serve you well for years to come.

Two-minute review

The Oral-B iO Series 9 not only gives an excellent clean, it also makes it refreshingly simple to develop better brushing habits. Feedback can be as simple or in-depth as you want.

If you’re in a hurry, just watch yourself in the mirror and ensure that you maintain a steady colored light while brushing, straying into neither the blue zone (too little pressure) or red (too much). This smart pressure sensor is much more useful than one that simply tells you if you’re pressing too hard, and the way the brush head glides over your teeth makes it easy to cover each surface.

Once you’re done, the brush’s color display will give you a quick heads-up in the form of a frowning, neutral or smiley face, and you can go about your day.

When you want more in-depth feedback on your brushing, connecting the brush to the Oral-B Bluetooth app allows you to get real-time feedback as you move around each section of your mouth. The location detection isn’t quite perfect, but it’s impressive nonetheless, and an effective way of encouraging you to pay equal attention to each part of your mouth. If your dentist often comments that you need to focus more on your molars, it’ll be a real help.

Oral-B iO Series 9 in charging case

It might seem a little silly at first, but the little face on the brush is genuinely motivating, and the various awards and achievements in the app will give you the same little sense of accomplishment as hitting your Fitbit ’s step goal for the day, or filling your Apple Watch ’s activity rings. A little bit of positive feedback that helps reinforce good habits.

The chief downside is the iO Series 9’s price; it’s one of the most expensive electric toothbrushes around. However, it’s come down a lot since its launch last year, and you may be able to pick it up for even less during deal events. If you can stomach the cost, it’s easily one of the best electric toothbrushes you can buy.

Price and release date

The Oral-B iO Series 9 was released in 2020, and was originally priced at $300 / £500 / AU$400. That makes it easily one of the most expensive electric toothbrushes around, but it can now be found much more cheaply if you shop around.

Replacement brush heads cost around $35 / £30 / AU$35 for a set of two, which is undeniably steep. You can occasionally find them for a discount on Amazon , so it’s wise to stock up if you do. The iO Series 9 isn’t compatible with heads from older Oral-B toothbrushes.

The Oral-B iO Series 9 is a modern-looking electric toothbrush available in three colors: black, white, and rose quartz. It’s supplied with a magnetic charger that connects to a standard shaving socket, one brush head, and a case to hold spares. You also get a rechargeable carry case, which keeps the brush powered up while you’re away from home. This holds the brush handle, and one head.

One of the iO Series 9’s best features is its color LCD display, which makes it easy to choose your preferred setting, and receive feedback after you finish brushing. While some toothbrushes over-complicate matters, the iO Series 9 is refreshingly simple, with just two buttons on the brush itself. Remove it from the charger to wake it, then use the lower button to select a mode and press the power button to start. There are seven modes to choose from, and the simple menu makes it easy to pick an appropriate one each time you’re ready to start brushing.

When you set up your toothbrush, you’ll be prompted to choose a color for its light. This isn’t just a nice touch of personalization; it also has a practical use. Like most higher-end electric toothbrushes, the Oral-B iO Series 9 has a pressure sensor. However, this is much more useful than the standard red light to indicate that you’re pressing too hard; as well as detecting excessive pressure, it also detects whether you’re not pressing hard enough. Your aim is to keep the light illuminated in your chosen color as much as possible, without straying into red (too much pressure) or blue (not enough).

Performance

In use, the Oral-B iO Series 9 is much quieter than an oscillating brush, and glides smoothly from one tooth to the next. Disclosing tablets revealed that we did indeed brush more effectively with the iO Series 9 than our regular oscillating toothbrush, when brushing for the same period of time. We also noticed a subjective difference; our teeth felt smoother after using the iO Series 9.

Oral-B iO Series 9 in woman's hand

The brush charges quickly (a quick charge from flat takes around three hours), and the smooth charging puck with no hard-to-clean recesses, and the brush is secured in place magnetically. It works well, but if you’re clumsy first thing in the morning, you might find yourself accidentally knocking the brush off the charger, so be careful where you place it.

Using the app isn’t essential, and you get quick feedback to help improve your brushing with the brush alone. Once you’ve finished, the color display will give you a rating in the form of a smiling, ambivalent, or frowning face depending on how long you spent brushing, and how evenly you applied pressure while doing so. It’s a small thing, but we found we genuinely wanted to earn the approval of that little face.

Oral-B iO Series 9 electric toothbrush on its charging base

To get the most out of the iO Series 9, however, you’ll need to download the Oral-B mobile app (available for Android and iOS). Once it’s installed, you’ll be prompted to grant permission for it to access location services (so it can find your brush) and register an account. When that’s done, connecting the brush to your phone is straightforward; just turn it on when instructed during the setup process, and it will be identified automatically. There’s no need to tap in an ID number, as you do with many Bluetooth devices.

With the app open, begin brushing and the app will detect which part of your mouth you’re currently cleaning, which will be highlighted on your phone’s screen. The teeth in the on-screen graphic will gradually change from blue to white, indicating that you’ve thoroughly cleaned each surface. This may take longer than the standard two minutes, depending on the effectiveness of your technique.

Brushing feedback in Oral-B app

The positioning technology isn’t absolutely perfect when it comes to identifying surfaces in deal time, but it’s accurate enough to be genuinely useful, and to help you avoid missing those spots that the dentist always points out.

Once you’ve finished brushing, you’ll be asked to report whether you experienced any gum bleeding, then given a score out of 100, with feedback on how well you covered the inside, outside and chewing surfaces, and how well you managed pressure control on each surface.

You can also earn Fitbit -style badges and awards for effective cleaning, and there are different oral health programs (called Dental Health Journeys) to try. Our reviewer had her braces removed last year, but can imagine the orthodontic program being particularly helpful due to the challenges of brushing around brackets and wires.

Oral-B app programs

The app is fun, and a good way to get a feel for how to improve your brushing, and once you’ve used it a few times to get an idea of how good brushing should feel, we recommend cleaning your teeth without watching the screen to see whether you can get good results by yourself. It’s a challenge, but one that’ll help you develop better technique that’ll set you up for life.

“You’re brushing too hard," my dentist warned, as she had for years, paired with stroke-softening advice, like “Brush with your non-dominant hand” and “Brush with the very tips of your fingers.” Despite shoving close-ups of my receding gums in my face, I continued to slip back into my habit of intensely scrubbing with my manual toothbrush, until she finally recommended I invest in an electric toothbrush like the Oral-B iO Series 9. “It’s pricey,” she said, “but might be worth it for your oral health.”

I was sent the Oral-B to test, and though I hate to admit it, my dentist was right. The smart toothbrush has turned around my brushing habits, thanks to its pressure sensors and clear feedback (both on the brush itself and via its app). It’s slim, stylish, has a long battery life, and somehow gets me to brush my teeth for the entire recommended two minutes . Read on for my full Oral-B iO Series 9 review.

How I Tested

In order to test the brush, I followed criteria laid out by a panel of dental experts in SELF’s electric toothbrush buying guide . I’ve used my Oral-B electric toothbrush for over seven months now, brushing twice daily, which is the recommended amount per the American Dental Association (ADA).

Some studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are generally better than manual toothbrushes at removing plaque and bacteria. However, since many brushes bill themselves as electric, it’s important to look more closely at its various components when considering which one to buy. Below, find how the Oral-B iO Series 9 electric toothbrush stacks up against our expert-guided criteria.

Two words: Size matters. Experts note that the larger your toothbrush, the trickier it can be to effectively clean harder-to-reach areas of your mouth like your upper back teeth and lower front teeth. Opt for a toothbrush with a handle that’s long enough that you can easily grasp it and a head that’s either round or smaller than 0.5 by 1 inch. The Oral-B’s iO Ultimate Clean round toothbrush head measures 0.5 by 0.75 inches (according to my personal measurements), and moves comfortably within my mouth (and hand).

It’s extremely lightweight (my kitchen scale weighs it at 4.9 ounces or 0.3 pounds), it’s slender, and its magnetic charging stand is barely wider than its base. The brush also comes with a sleek charging travel case which can charge the brush via the base. I only use this for longer trips (for a weekend getaway, I just make sure the brush is fully charged and stick it in my toiletry bag).

The ADA recommends using a soft-bristled brush (and applying gentle pressure when brushing, as my dentist begged me to do) in order to reduce the risk of gingival injury. “Harder bristles can damage and remove enamel and root surfaces,” Geoffrey Morris, DMD , Boca Raton cosmetic and restorative dentist, previously told SELF .

The Oral-B iO 9 comes with four iO Ultimate Clean round replacement brush heads that have unique angled, tufted bristles. This design of thinner bristles with longer and shorter lengths is layered to better target hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. The included brush heads are of standard softness (not too soft); however, with use, I find that my gums never bleed (unlike when I use my manual toothbrush and even other electric toothbrushes like the Colgate Hum ). My gums feel clean but not tender after, perhaps owing to the brush's micro-vibrations. For sensitive teeth, the toothbrush is also compatible with Oral-B iO Gentle Care brush heads, which have extra soft bristles (though I’ve not tried these).

According to the experts, it’s a real plus for your oral care if an electric toothbrush has a range of settings, including a self-timer, pressure sensor, and custom brushing modes. “This removes a lot of the guesswork in your cleaning, which helps you clean with confidence,” Lewis Chen, DDS, FICOI, FIADFE, cofounder and managing partner of Beam Street , told SELF. On the settings front, the Oral-B iO Series 9 seriously delivers.

On the interactive color display on the brush’s handle, you can select from seven different cleaning modes (daily clean, whitening, gum care, sensitive, intense, super sensitive, and tongue clean). Generally, I stick with the sensitive smart mode, but occasionally opt for tongue clean and whitening. I find the sensitive setting gentle enough for day-to-day use, but it's nice to have the super sensitive option. As Dr. Chen notes, it’s helpful if an electric toothbrush has a setting to control its sensitivity level, as many patients find the vibrations uncomfortable.

Once I start my brush cycle with a push of a button, the brush’s quad timer kicks in, meaning that every 30 seconds, the brush clearly vibrates to signal that I switch brushing a new quadrant of my mouth. I can eye how much time I’ve spent brushing on the screen, and once I’ve hit the recommended two minutes, the brush vibrates twice to signal I’m done (if I want to be).

My two favorite features of this toothbrush, however, are its bimodal smart pressure sensor and personalized feedback. At the base of the brush head is a ring of light that changes to red if I’m brushing too hard, white if I’m brushing too softly, and green if I’m using just the right amount of pressure. I’ve never had this kind of responsiveness in a toothbrush, and it really makes all the difference, especially as someone who’s struggled with wanting to scrub my teeth in order to feel clean. My gums thank me.

When I’ve hit the two-minute mark, a silly little smiley face appears on the brush’s screen. If I hit between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, it flashes a :/ and if I’m nowhere close, I get a more-disappointed face. This feedback feels like a kindergarten throwback (here’s a gold star for trying, Malia!), but it’s effective. As a people-pleaser (and now a toothbrush-pleaser), I want that smiley face, dammit, and I will brush enough to achieve it.

Lastly, this brush syncs via Bluetooth with the Oral-B app. The app creates a 3D teeth-tracking map that analyzes the coverage you give to the 16 zones of your teeth while brushing and provides coaching based on your behaviors. It also theoretically keeps an eye on the pressure you apply, how long you brush, and what your goals are ( whitening , fresh breath, plaque fighting, etc.). To be honest, I rarely open the app. When I open the app, I’ve not successfully gotten my toothbrush to pair in real-time so that I can easily see my habits and changes to make, despite fiddling around with connectivity and charging. The app is not a pro for me, nor is it a con. I could take it or leave it, but if you’re a real techie , it might be a selling point.

Oscillation “means the bristles travel back and forth a certain distance to disrupt plaque and debris,” explained Chris Strandburg, DDS , dentist and Waterpik spokesperson. Our experts recommend finding an electric toothbrush that provides oscillation, which is notably different from the vibrating effect that many toothbrushes offer but don't provide additional cleaning benefits.

The Oral-B iO Series 9 has something called “linear magnetic drive,” which sends controlled energy to the brush's bristle tips and produces oscillation-rotations with micro-vibrations. What it comes down to is that the toothbrush quietly, powerfully, and gently oscillates across the teeth to break up plaque—and as far as I can tell, it works. My teeth feel significantly fresher and cleaner (and look it too) after use.

Though electric toothbrush prices are dropping, dental experts don’t recommend spending less than $50 on yours if you want a brush of higher quality that actually lasts. You’re in luck: The Oral-B iO Series 9 is well over $50. In fact, it’s around $300. According to Amazon price tracker CamelCamelCamel , the highest it’s ever been is $330 (July 2021) and the lowest is $200 (May 2021). Your purchase nicely includes four brush heads (which would save you around $60 to $80). It’s a hefty price, but if you’re shopping for an electric brush that provides a ton of features, ensures your brushing pressure is appropriate, charges quickly (in under three hours), and will last you for years, then this model is comparable to similar items (such as the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart 9500 , which we’ve reviewed, is not reviewed by the ADA, and costs around $280).

Our experts advise choosing an electric toothbrush that bears the ADA Seal of Acceptance , an accolade earned through scientific evidence that demonstrates the product’s safety and efficacy in removing plaque and reducing gingivitis. Crucially, Oral-B’s iO Series toothbrushes, including the iO Series 9, have all been awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance—a huge vote of confidence in my book (and dentists’ too).

If you purchase through Oral-B directly, your electric toothbrush has a warranty that runs for two years (which will, of course, not cover normal wear and tear or improper use). If your toothbrush is defective, you'll receive a full refund to your form of payment if the company is notified within 30 days of purchase. If you're unsatisfied with your purchase, the company provides a 60-day money-back guarantee and will issue a one-time per household refund. Our experts note that it may take time to determine if a toothbrush is right for you, but a money-back guarantee is standard and helpful.

Should You Buy It?

If you’ve ever experienced the satisfaction of a solid car wash, that’s how my teeth feel and look after using the Oral-B iO Series 9. I’ve tried multiple electric toothbrushes over the years, but I’ve full-stopped with this one. Thanks to its pressure sensors and visual feedback, I brush with the appropriate amount of force and for far longer than before (when I used to only do a quick scrub). In fact, I don’t brush at all; I just hover, while my Oral-B does the brushing for me. When finished, my teeth are as all-over clean and bright as they are after my biannual trips to the dentist’s office (with no gum bleeding). Plus, I only have to charge my brush every eight days or so. Is it pricey? Yes, but for me, it’s well worth the cost of finally knowing that my teeth are soothed, smooth, and sparkling. Hands down, the Oral-B iO Series 9 is the best electric toothbrush I’ve tried.

[Editor’s note: The Oral-B iO Series 9 electric toothbrush is available in black onyx, white alabaster, rose quartz, and aquamarine. If purchased through Oral-B , you will receive a free box of Crest 3DWhitestrips Glamorous White using code GLAM23 at checkout.]

It was only a matter of time before connected culture came to our bathrooms in the morning and that’s what the iO9 offers with its accompanying app.

Launched in August 2020, the iO series set out to produce a brush that dialled down the friction and harsh brushing that some users experienced from electric brushes which rely on an oscillating rotating brush head.

Oral-B’s brushes had depended on this action in combination with a pulsing effect, but the iO range sought to add micro vibrations to its cleaning operation, while the pulsing action was removed in an attempt to produce a powerful yet gentle clean.

The iO9 also brings with it what the manufacturer calls “AI brushing recognition technology”, which is a very fancy way of saying that the brush is app-enabled and so you’re going to need to take your phone into the bathroom with you to take full advantage of the tech that aims to help you become a better brusher.

Cleaning modes: Seven

Two-minute timer? Yes

30-second pacer? Yes

Travel case? Yes

Operating time (full to empty): 10 days

Charging time: Three hours

Weight: 0.64kg

The brush is styled well and comes in three colour schemes: black onyx, with a brush head, handle and charging dock that’s all black; white alabaster, which is all white; and rose quartz which has that coloured handle.

The handles are finished top and bottom with a chrome cuff and at the top, just beneath this cuff, is an easily visible light ring that glows red to tell you that you’re brushing too hard and green when you’ve got it just right.

In hand, there’s plenty to like, with good ergonomics and a handle material which never feels like it’s going to slip, even when it’s wet; although it doesn’t have the addition of rubber grips, which some users will look for to give some extra friction.

Considering the handle contains the motor and its attendant parts, as well as a gyro sensor and accelerometer that feeds data to the AI of the app, the brush is impressively lightweight to pick up and use.

There’s plenty to like about the iO9 when it’s up and running too. This is largely thanks to the addition of springs and a counterweight, which protects the hand from any vibration from the iO9’s powerful magnetic motor.

The user interface is what sets the iO9 apart from other brushes as it features a full colour OLED display recessed into the handle between the two large buttons – one for turning the brush on/off and the other to toggle between the seven different brushing modes: daily clean, whitening, sensitive, super sensitive, gum care, tongue clean and intense.

The iO makes full use of the OLED screen, greeting you with a brightly coloured image of a sun and a “hello” when you first turn it on each day and every cleaning mode has an appropriate coloured image (a feather for sensitive, a diamond for whitening etc), after which the timer will track your dentist-recommended two minutes on screen.

When you’re done the display shows you the remaining battery life and you’ll get feedback for your brushing in the form of a smiley or sad face. Whether you want your toothbrush to be imbued with this kind of personality, will vary with each user.

Before your first outing with the iO9 and to get the most out of the connected experience, you’ll need to download the app and sync it up, via Bluetooth, to your phone. The aforementioned gyro sensor and accelerometer communicates with the app and the AI interprets the data as you brush in real-time, so the virtual mouth that you’ll see on your phone’s screen will continue to light up until you reach 100 per cent coverage.

This means that if you’re using the software, you might be going longer than just two minutes in order to make the app happy and achieve total coverage.

Anecdotally, we’d heard that some users experienced a disconnect between where the brush was in the mouth and the location in-app, but we didn’t have any issues with this and the sophisticated AI (which was six years in development) worked extremely accurately.

The app also records brushing history, an overall percentage score and there are some gamified elements, like badges and awards that will appeal to some. Finally, the app will alert you when you need to replace the brush head, after three months of usage.

Of course, all the quantification and tracking is wasted if the cleaning power and efficiency of the brush itself isn’t up to scratch. The typical Oral-B round brush head has been adapted for the iO series and boasts more bristles, which are designed to get to the areas of the teeth where bacteria hides – in combination, the short, long and twisted groupings feel like they’re doing a good job of covering more surface area than a manual brush head.

Equally important is the fact that the brush head works in combination with the motor by transferring all the energy to the bristles themselves rather than the entire head, which is why some electric toothbrushes can feel too powerful and might do more harm than good. If you do have sensitive gums or are making the switch to electric brushing for the first time, we would advise that you start off brushing in sensitive mode and keep a close eye on the pressure sensor and app to guide your technique, then step it up to daily clean mode when you have more control.

From a full charge we managed to get around 10 days worth of brushing out of the battery, but that was reduced if we opted for the longer cleaning modes or spent too long fiddling with the OLED display, which clearly saps battery life.

However, if you always replace the brush in the magnetic charger after your morning session, then you won’t have to think about the battery, especially as Oral-B have included a failsafe to keep it from overcharging and damaging the battery.

Well, you’re certainly paying for that six years of R&D that informs the AI of the iO9 , so you have to decide how much you’re going to commit to the app and whether your current dental hygiene really is lacking.

If you do commit, you will be rewarded with a guided deep clean, but be prepared to spend more time in front of the mirror every morning and evening.

In isolation, Oral-B has succeeded in delivering a robust yet gentle clean throughout all the modes and the settings and sensors will enable people with sensitive teeth and gum disease to find a sweet spot that will help them maintain good oral health without ending each session with excessive bleeding or inflammation.

Perfect for advanced gum care, sensitive teeth and whitening, we’ve found all the best electric toothbrushes

This $300 AI-Powered Toothbrush Left Me With That Post-Dentist, Just-Got-Robbed Kind of Feeling

An ai-powered rechargeable electric toothbrush with an associated app from oral-b.

Image for article titled This $300 AI-Powered Toothbrush Left Me With That Post-Dentist, Just-Got-Robbed Kind of Feeling

When I purchased my first electric toothbrush about a year and a half ago, a Quip, it felt like an outrageous indulgence. Fifty-five dollars seemed far too steep for something so silly, but I wanted to make a long-term investment in healthy teeth, and I was able to justify the expense—at least at the time—because the battery-powered toothbrush took the guesswork out of things like time spent brushing and adequate dedication to quadrants. So when I caught wind of the Oral-B iO Series 9 , which retails for an eye-popping $300, I was certain I’d be leveling up my oral hygiene big time. Instead, while reviewing one, I found myself frustrated by its needless complications and an app I rarely used. Plus, unless you happen to have 300 spare clams burning a hole in your pocket, it’s also obscenely expensive.

Let’s start with what $300 gets you with the iO Series 9 that doesn’t come with the slightly-less-painful Series 7 ($200) or Series 8 ($250): The biggest difference is the number of zones the toothbrush monitors. Whereas the Series 7 and 8 monitor six zones, the Series 9 more than doubles that coverage with 16 zones. Where the Series 8 and 9 have color screens (though relatively basic), the Series 7 is limited to black and white. The Series 9 also has seven modes of brushing, whereas the Series 7 and 8 have five and six modes, respectively.

The Series 9 is the only toothbrush in the line that comes with a portable charging case, which I could see being handy for folks who travel quite a bit. The magnetic charging stand that comes with all three is small enough, which should come as a relief to anyone with limited bathroom counter space. It’ll fully recharge in about 3 hours, and Oral-B says you should get about two weeks of use from a single charge. (A spokesperson told Gizmodo battery life is the same for the Series 7 and 8.)

Image for article titled This $300 AI-Powered Toothbrush Left Me With That Post-Dentist, Just-Got-Robbed Kind of Feeling

Beyond that, the differences are fairly superficial. The Rose Quartz option is limited to the most expensive model, for instance. It also comes with the greatest number of brush refills straight out of the box (four). A Violet Ametrine color option is available on the Series 8, but the most affordable of the three is limited to just black and white versions (which are fine). I’m going to be speaking exclusively to the Series 9 in this review, both for the fact that that is the one I’ve been using for the last couple of weeks as well as because the difference of $100 or even $50 is quite a hike for a toothbrush. In using this device, I looked at both its cleaning features and usability but also whether its overall package justifies its price tag.

There are plenty of things I liked about this toothbrush, and I’ll get to those in a moment. But more immediately evident to me were the things I did not like, specifically its associated app. The app can be used for things like setting goals, tracking your brushing over time, surfacing problematic brushing habits, and organizing your preferred settings (a feature that did not seem to work for me, or only worked temporarily, regardless of how many times I tried to disconnect and reconnect my toothbrush). For good habits associated with your goals—things like whitening, bad breath, or tongue cleaning—you’ll win in-app medals. I found this to be very silly and didn’t much bother with the self-assigned challenges, but that’s just me.

I’ll be honest, an initial tutorial was somewhat helpful for identifying when and where I was brushing way too hard (an illuminated ring on the brush itself will glow red when you do this), but beyond that introductory run-through, the app wasn’t helpful—to me at least—for much else. Part of the reason why is because much of what you need to know about your habits is displayed right there on the device. A green light indicates you’re doing a decent job, while a red light means you need to ease up a bit. A smiley face will appear on the toothbrush’s color display when you’ve brushed for 2 minutes, but god forbid you cut your session short for any reason. Sessions shorter than 2 minutes put you at risk of getting the dreaded frowny face, something that frankly bummed me out every time I grabbed my toothbrush for a quick clean after lunch. Brush for more than 2 minutes, though, and your virtual dental hygienist will leer out at you from behind its black window with stars for eyes. This is good. Shoot for stars.

As is a standard feature on many electric toothbrushes, the iO will shortly buzz every 30 seconds to indicate it’s time to move on to another quadrant (a long buzz will happen at the 2-minute mark, but the toothbrush will remain vibrating). On the Series 9 , you have up to seven modes of brushing from which to choose: Daily Clean, Gum Care, Intense, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Tongue Clean, and Whitening. Be forewarned: The whitening setting will make you feel like your skull is vibrating, but this sensation—however unnerving at first—is likely something you’ll get used to with regular use.

The overall brushing experience for me wasn’t too bad once I figured out how to reconfigure the toothbrush for sensitive brushing, but it was a little awkward. The iO uses the rounded brush style seen on other Oral-B toothbrushes. Oral-B says the brush head on the iO “combines oscillating, rotating movements with micro-vibrations to ensure an unprecedented deep clean that reaches every contour.” I found, however, that the brush head and its wider neck could be tricky while attempting to reach my back teeth. I have a smaller mouth, and the design of this toothbrush was a little uncomfortable for me. This is a personal design gripe, though. It’s entirely possible—and likely, given the Series 9 has for weeks been completely sold out on Oral-B’s website every time I’ve checked—that this isn’t an issue for other users.

Image for article titled This $300 AI-Powered Toothbrush Left Me With That Post-Dentist, Just-Got-Robbed Kind of Feeling

What I will say of the Series 9 is that despite the clunkiness of the app and the issue I personally had with the design, you will feel like you’ve just left the dentist’s office every time you brush with this thing. Whether or not that’s something you want, though, is really a matter of preference. I found that after a couple of weeks with the iO, I’d sometimes still reach for my Quip just because I wanted a fuss-free, easy experience with a toothbrush that didn’t fling toothpaste all over my bathroom mirror. (And reader, this will inevitably happen, if not the first time you power the iO on, then when you’re least expecting it.)

What I’m trying to say is that the Oral-B iO Series 9 is a very good toothbrush, and if nothing else, you will get a superior clean with a few tips for how to brush better. If you’ve been seriously considering the iO and have the budget for it, I say go for it. But is this toothbrush really worth $300? For most people, no. This toothbrush serves one purpose and somehow costs more than an Apple Watch SE , which can not only answer your stray questions and track your fitness but sense when you’ve fallen and alert the authorities. The iO will, you know, brush your teeth.

If you’re unsure about dipping your toe into the premium toothbrush waters but don’t want to break the bank, I might suggest even considering Oral-B’s significantly cheaper—albeit AI-free—Pro 7000 from the company’s Genius series, which is currently priced below $130 . If you, like me, just need something with gentle vibrations to help remind you to brush for two minutes twice a day, then buddy, a $300 AI-powered toothbrush you need not.

  • The iO Series 9 is a $300 electric toothbrush with a portable charging case and magnetic charging stand. Out of the box, it comes with four brush heads.
  • It has seven brushing modes, including two modes for sensitive brushing and a tongue-cleaning setting.
  • Its companion app can help you identify some poor brushing habits, but it’s not something you’ll likely use long-term unless you’re prepared to stare at your phone for two minutes every time you brush.
  • While a display on a toothbrush is neat, $300 is a bit much for a gadget that does exactly one thing: brush your teeth.

Duncan Bell

Oral-B is the world's biggest and best electric toothbrush maker – it rules the roost and has made a success of its toothbrush line through some innovative teeth-cleaning tech including gum-pressure sensors, AI-power, and app-support.

The latest iO Series was hailed as the biggest innovation in oral care history (by Oral-B) and was released with much fanfare.

Not only was the iO Series supposed to be unveiled at a big event at Mobile World Congress (which was eventually cancelled), months after that, journalists received their review samples via drone (although not ours as apparently our part of London is just too urban and dangerous for such things).

The reason for this? That would be because the iO Series is one of the most premium out there. Sitting at the top of the range is the iO Series 9, which has an entirely ridiculous RRP of £500. Needless to say, it is not worth that (no electric toothbrush is).

The good news is that discounting has now kicked in, and you can often get the iO9 for half that. £250 is still not exactly cheap, clearly, but it's a bargain compared to the original price.

But, is the Oral-B iO9 really worth the dosh? Let’s find out...

Oral-B iO9 review: Price And Availability

The Oral-B iO9 was released in August 2020, and, as we literally just mentioned, it has a phenomenally high RRP of £499.99. Since that time, the price has come down somewhat, and can now be picked up for half that – a mere £249.99.

The colours available include Black Onyx, White Alabaster, and Rose Quartz.

For that price, you get one powered toothbrush handle, one toothbrush head, a magnetic charger, a toothbrush head holder, and a charging travel case.

The Oral-B iO9 ships with one of Oral-B’s Ultimate Clean toothbrush heads, featuring round brush heads and twisted bristle technology. Oral-B claims these are designed for an effective clean, and remove up to 100% more plaque than a conventional manual toothbrush.

These brush heads are designed to last around three months, and will cost £30 for a pack of two, or if you prefer to buy in bulk, £53.99 for a four-pack. Just like the main brush, however, we've seen deals on these heads, with a four-pack coming in as low as £27 .

If you are an existing Oral-B customer with some leftover brushes, that is tough luck – the new design isn't compatible with older heads.

Oral-B iO9 review: Design

The iO9 is very stylish and well made for an Oral-B brush. They are usually the poor relation to Philips' best Sonicare brushes when it comes to slick styling, but this is a match for any Philips brush when it comes to slimline design, nice materials, quiet operation and colour display (more on that later).

The iO9 is available in Black Onyx, White Alabaster, and Rose Quartz. While the more colourful options certainly are eye-catching, we feel you can't beat the classic white (which just so happens to be the model we reviewed). It also happens to be the option that hides any remnants of toothpaste better than the others, which is something to keep in mind if you're a messy scrubber. If you do opt for the Black Onyx model then be prepared to clean it more regularly.

There are two buttons on the iO9 which are fairly easy to use. The top button turns the toothbrush on, as well as selecting the brushing modes and menu options. The second button cycles through the brushing modes and menu options. There are seven modes in total, Daily Clean, Sensitive, Whiten, Gum Care, Intense, Super Sensitive, and Tongue Clean.

In the menu, you can select the language, toggle Bluetooth on or off, and choose the colour of the light ring.

Now, obviously, the colour display is a completely superfluous feature – you can't watch a tiny screen while brushing your teeth and it does little to improve the functionality. It does however appeal to the tech-geek inside of us, and still blows our mind when we're greeted in the morning by a little animated sun icon.

The display can also tell you how long you've brushed for after a cleaning session, as well as show your remaining battery life.

Overall, we’re big fans of the Oral-B iO9’s design and suspect most people would love to have it sitting on their bathroom shelf.

Oral-B iO9 review

Oral-B iO9 review: App And Connectivity

The Oral-B iO9 is smart in the sense that it’s connected to an app that you’re supposed to view on your smartphone while brushing your teeth to help you improve your teeth-cleaning experience.

The app provides real-time individual tracking and coaching, thanks to artificial intelligence informed by thousands of recorded brushing sessions.

The Oral-B iO app has a simple and intuitive user interface that guides consumers through a two-minute brushing session with 3D teeth tracking to ensure a professional clean feeling every time.

This has been tried by Oral-B and Philips before and it didn't work. And guess what? It still doesn't!

For example, you could be brushing your upper left teeth and the Oral-B mobile app shows you beavering away on your lower right teeth. The result? You end up having no idea what parts of your mouth you have or have not cleaned 'correctly'. The only thing to be said for this is, if you're anything like me, you will end up cleaning your teeth a LOT, until the app finally admits you have cleaned everywhere.

Oral-B iO9 review: Cleaning and Performance

The Oral-B iO9 may not know which of your teeth it's cleaning, but it is undeniably brilliant at actually cleaning them. Using a magnetic motor gives the Oral-B an interesting new twist: it is still a rotary head, but it now has a vibrating mouth feel, more like a Philips brush.

Cleaning results are excellent and there are some great sensitive, whitening and deep cleaning programmes for those who like to stray away from the Daily Clean setting. It does a fantastic job of cleaning your gnashers and leaving you with a fresh-feeling mouth for hours afterwards.

If you’re not using the app, you’ll appreciate that the iO9 has a built-in timer that will pulse every 30 seconds to encourage you to move onto the next quadrant of your teeth and turn off after two minutes.

Battery life is also very good – and we like the small, chic and magnetic charging dock supplied.

What we find weird about this brush, given its premium and luxurious airs, is that it is inherently prone to getting mucky, and is a pain to clean. Without going into too much gross detail, a mixture of saliva and toothpaste invariably gets sucked into the brush head, then oozes out and sets into what we can only describe as 'clag'. Call us Captain Picky if you will, but that doesn't feel all that premium and luxurious, to us.

Oral-B iO9 review: Verdict

The Oral-B iO9 is one of the best electric toothbrushes that will leave you with a super clean and fresh feeling mouth. We love the performance and the design, there are, however, a few problems with the iO that are hard to ignore in a product that is meant to cost £500.

The colour display, while impressive, is relatively superfluous, and 3D teeth tracking with AI still doesn't work.

If you're tempted by the iO9, but can't justify spending that much on an electric toothbrush, there are other options in the Oral-B iO range. The iO8  is the same brush but without the (non-functional) 3D teeth tracking thing. The iO7   is the same brush but with no 3D teeth tracking, a black and white screen and fewer cleaning programmes. You could also check out our guide to the best electric toothbrushes , which feature rivals from Philips and Panasonic.

However, it is worth noting that endless deals at Amazon and elsewhere mean you will almost never need to pay full price for this brush. If you see it discounted down to the £100-£200 bracket – and you will, if you keep checking our pricing widgets in a diligent manner – then clearly it is suddenly much easier to recommend.

Oral-B iO Series 9 Review

A powerful, yet expensive, smart toothbrush

Oral-B iO Series 9 hero

If you're looking for the absolute best electric toothbrush that money can buy the Oral-B iO Series 9 is it. This model uses a new frictionless magnetic drive that delivers maximum power without the noise and brash attack of the company's oscillating models. With a clever LCD that helps you pick the best cleaning mode, and a neat travel charging case, this is the best-performing toothbrush we've tested. Slightly iffy brush tracking in the app and the high price makes this a hard purchase to justify, but if you have the money you will not be disappointed.

  • Powerful brushing action
  • Neat LCD screen
  • Mouth tracking doesn't work very well

Key Specifications

  • Review Price: £499.99
  • Two-minute timer with 30-second intervals
  • Seven cleaning modes
  • Hard travel case with charging capability
  • Two-week battery life

For years, Oral-B has produced oscillating toothbrushes, which have been powerful but quite loud and can take a while to get used to. The Oral-B iO Series 9 changes that completely, with a new magnetic drive, redesigned toothbrush hub, smart display and even an app to help you brush.

Design and features – The LCD screen is really handy

Unbox the Oral-B iO Series 9 and it looks much like any other electric toothbrush – there’s only so far you can go in design. You can buy this model in black, white or pink. Take a closer look and you can start to see some differences from previous Oral-B brushes.

For starters, the brush head design is different and incompatible with non-iO toothbrushes. This is down to the new frictionless magnetic drive system that Oral-B says distributes energy more efficiently to the bristles in the brush.

Oral-B iO Series 9 brush head removed

The other major difference is that this toothbrush has an LCD screen. I’m used to Oral-B brushes having lots of cleaning modes, but it was often hard to work out what each symbol meant. Having a screen fixes those issues, as you can use the selector button to flick through the cleaning modes, with the brush showing an icon and text description for each one.

Oral-B iO Series 9 controls and LCD

Modes include Daily care for regular cleaning; Sensitive, which reduces the power to give you a more gentle clean; Gum care for massaging your gums; Whitening for polishing your teeth; Intense clean that operates at a higher speed; Super sensitive for very gentle cleaning; and Tongue clean for cleaning your tongue.

Once you’ve selected a mode, you just brush as normal. Each mode has a timer, with the teeth modes also having quarterly timers that buzz the brush, letting you know it’s time to move teeth quadrant (you should brush top left, bottom left, top right and bottom right for at least 30 seconds each).

If you press too hard, then the status ring around the brush turns red, telling you that you should back off a little.

All modes are compatible with all toothbrush heads, although it’s recommended that you get a Gentle Care brush for the Tongue clean mode; you get the standard Ultimate Clean brush head in the box.

As with all electric toothbrushes, the iO Series 9 is charged via a wireless charger that plugs into a razer socket in your bathroom. Oral-B has redesigned its charger for this model, and it no longer has a nodule sticking upright. So, if you’ve got older Oral-B toothbrushes in your house, you’ll need to keep two different chargers around.

Oral-B iO Series 9 charging

A charge takes around six hours, which is pretty quick going by other electric brushes, and should last around two weeks, depending on how often you brush your teeth and the modes that you use.

Oral-B is well-known for giving extras in the box, and the iO Series 9 is no different. This model ships with a charging travel case that can take the toothbrush and one brush head. And, you get a travel refill holder, that can take two additional brushes in it.

Oral-B iO Series 9 travel case

This toothbrush can be paired with the Oral-B app, which gives you a few extra features. First, you can use the app to change the colour of the LED ring, which is handy if you’ve got multiple people in the house with the same brush handle. You can also override the default two-minute timer, setting your own preferred brushing time.

Oral-B iO Series 9 app colours and settings

When you connect a new brush head, the toothbrush can detect what type it is and when it was connected, giving you an automatic reminder to change the brush head. It’s similar to the tech that Philips uses on its Sonicare brushes, although these have a reminder icon on the brush itself.

Oral-B has also built the app to help you brush your teeth better, too. Using tracking tech built into the brush, the app can detect where you’re brushing. It then highlights the area of your teeth that you’re covering, changing colour to give you stars when you’ve brushed an area well.

It sounds brilliant, but the tracking isn’t particularly good. I found that the app would quite often tell me that I’m brushing a different part of my mouth, particularly when it came to the back teeth. Ultimately, as with previous Oral-B smart toothbrushes, the app is something that didn’t come out very often after initial testing.

Oral-B iO Series 9 app cleaning

Performance – Cleans perfectly and is more gentle than previous Oral-B brushes

To test how good the toothbrush is, I got out my set of test teeth, and fitted them with spinach and beetroot debris. Cleaning using the standard clean programme, I found that the round Ultimate Clean brush head managed to make its way around the teeth easily.

Oral-B iO Series 9 brushing teeth

There’s plenty of power on offer, and the brush head teased out debris caught between teeth with no problems at all. At the end, all of the food and stains had gone, and I didn’t have to particularly focus my efforts on any one area.

Oral-B iO Series 9 dirty teeth

Moving to myself, I used the toothbrush for a couple of weeks. With previous Oral-B brushes, such as the excellent Oral-B Genius 9000, I found that I had to get used to the oscillating power, with some gum bleeding to start off with.

Thanks to the iO Series 9’s frictionless magnetic drive, things were easier this time around and it feels more like brushing with a sonic brush. However, look at the brush head as it moves, and you get more energy and dynamic movement than with sonic models.

Oral-B iO Series 9 brush turned on

Thanks to the comfortable, round brush, rather than the longer, elongated brushes that you get with Philips models, the iO Series 9 is extremely comfortable to brush with. I soon got used to it, and felt that my teeth were fresh and well cleaned at the end.

There’s an added advantage of the magnetic drive: this brush is far quieter than previous Oral-B models. I measured the brush at a peak of 62.8dB; the Oral-B Genius 9000 peaked at 82.4dB!

Should you buy the Oral-B iO Series 9?

From a pure, objective point of view, the Oral-B iO Series 9 is the best electric toothbrush that I’ve tested. It’s powerful, quiet and easy to use, cleaning with an energy level that’s superior to other brushes that I’ve used. And its LCD screen is truely useful, making it far easier to switch between modes with confidence.

The price is a huge issue, with the brush retailing for £499.99, which easily makes it the most expensive electric toothbrush that I’ve reviewed. If you can afford it, or can get one on deal, then it’s money well spent, with the Oral-B iO Series 9 giving a superior and effortless cleaning experience.

At full price, most people will probably be better off with the older Genius 9000 , which is far cheaper and cleans brilliantly, although it does take some getting used to.

Oral-B iO review

new oral-b toothbrush io review

Pros and cons

Ai brushing technology.

oral-b toothbrush app

Aside from the better charging time and battery life, the star feature is the AI technology which tracks how you are brushing and helps you improve your technique . If you're consistently missing part of your mouth when you brush, or using too much pressure, this toothbrush will be able to tell you.

That's a pretty cool feature if you want to keep your teeth in tip-top condition.

How does it work? The brush connects via Bluetooth to an app on your smartphone. Sensors inside the brush track where you have brushed and for how long. In the end, you get a score and feedback to help you improve for next time. The pressure sensor also displays a red warning light if you brush too hard.

This is not a completely novel idea; the Oral-B Genius X and Sonicare DiamondClean Smart both offer similar technology.

What's different about the iO is that it incorporates 3D tracking technology to monitor 12 different zones in your mouth; the 3 surfaces of each of the 4 quadrants. So it can tell you specifically that you need to focus on the biting surface of your left upper molars, for example.

However, the 3D teeth tracking is only available on the iO9, the top-of-the-range model.

Cleaning performance

It should go without saying really, the iO toothbrush leaves your teeth feeling super clean . You'd expect that from a toothbrush that has six years of research and over 250 patents behind it.

These results have been proven in clinical trials , too. It's been shown to remove six times more plaque along the gumline than a manual brush, also contributing to a reduction in gingivitis (gum disease). After eight weeks of use, 82% of people using the iO had healthy gums, compared to just 24% who used a manual brush.

oral-b io series 9 review

It has also outperformed its main competitor, the Sonicare DiamondClean. In a similar study comparing the two brushes, 84% of people using the iO had healthy gums after eight weeks versus 53% who used the Sonicare.

The way the motor delivers power makes it feel gentler than previous models, too. Not in a less effective way, but certainly less aggressive.

Timer and pressure sensor

As has become quite standard on electric toothbrushes now, a built-in timer signals when your brushing time is up and a quad-pacer tells you when it's time to move to a new section of your mouth. For the standard Daily Clean mode, this is set to two minutes broken into four 30-second intervals. You can adjust these settings via the app if you wish.

The pressure sensor is also not a particularly novel feature, although the iO brings a new twist to it. Using the light ring around the handle, not only tells you if you're applying too much pressure (red) but also if you're not applying enough (white). You're aiming for green, which shows you're doing it just right.

The red light is accompanied by a slight reduction in the motor speed. You can customize the color displayed on the LED ring when the brush is on but not in use; a fun but completely unnecessary feature.

A timer, quad-pacer, and pressure sensor are all very helpful electric toothbrush features. But don't buy the iO simply for these. You can pick up the Oral-B Pro 1000 for around a tenth of the price.

App and built-in display

oral-b io review display

The display screen on the new Oral-B toothbrush is a big step up from having one or two tiny lights communicating information to you. It says ‘Hello' when you pick it up and lets you select your cleaning mode and check the battery life.

A timer shows how long you've been brushing, although it's hard to view this without stopping and taking the brush out of your mouth.

Once you have finished, you get either a happy face or a sad face depending on how effectively you brushed. That's fine, but it would be helpful to know specifically what you could improve. Did you brush too hard? Stop too soon? Or did you get distracted and only clean one side of your mouth? You'll have to check the app to find out.

Oral-B has developed a new app to go along with this brush with a revised design incorporating the Brushing Recognition AI. If you have it open as you brush, it displays your progress in real time. Once you finish, it gives you an overall score based on your brushing time, coverage, and pressure.

The idea is that all of this technology in the iO trains you to brush your teeth more effectively . Over time, you should see your score improve.

You also get awarded medals for certain milestones, such as scoring 90% or more for three consecutive days. This gamification of tooth-brushing might appeal to some, while for others it comes across as a bit gimmicky and childish.

If you're guilty of scrolling on your phone when you brush and not really paying attention to what you're doing, the app will certainly help you focus. But you do have to be committed to using it to get the most out of it.

If you don't have the app open as you brush, some information will still be stored in the brush and transmitted to the app the next time you open it.

Charging and battery life

Top grades to Oral-B for addressing two of the most annoying things about many of their other brushes.

Although the advertised battery life is two weeks — the same as their previous brushes — we found it lasted much longer. Many other Oral-B iO reviews seem to concur. If you're using it for the recommended four minutes a day, you might find it lasts for a month or more between charges.

If you use the more intense brushing modes, brush for longer, or share it with other members of your household, then of course this will reduce. In any case, it's bound to be an improvement on any other Oral-B toothbrush you own.

To add to this, charging takes just three hours with the magnetic charging stand. Again, this is a huge improvement on having to charge your toothbrush for the better part of a day. Plus, you can check via the display exactly how much battery life is left.

oral-b io replacement head

Oral-B iO toothbrush heads

The new brush heads are presumably necessary for the new style of motor, but unfortunately, they are not compatible with Oral-B's older toothbrushes. Nor are the older style heads compatible with the iO.

One thing that set Oral-B apart from Sonicare up until this point was the cost of replacement brush heads. Oral-B CrossAction brush heads and other variants cost around $6 per replacement, whereas Sonicare heads cost around $8 each, depending on the type and quantity purchased.

The new iO replacement brush heads are available for around $10 to $15 each at some retailers. There are two types available: Ultimate Clean and Gentle Care — making this a great electric toothbrush for sensitive teeth — in black or white to match your brush handle.

Accessories

The Oral-B iO is quite thin on accessories. In the box, you get:

  • iO toothbrush handle
  • 1 x iO Ultimate Clean brush head
  • Magnetic charging stand
  • Refill holder
  • Power2Go charging travel case (white or black)
  • Travel case power adaptor

Oral b io travel case

You'd think that for $250 they could give you at least one extra head to put inside the refill holder. Anyway, the charging stand is a nice update. The base is almost flat but magnets hold the handle in place until you need it again.

The iO travel case could be executed better. It's certainly handy to have a protective case when you go away, but this one only has space for one brush head. If you need to take another, you'll have to bring the refill holder along as well.

The actual charging cord for the case is quite bulky. Rather than a simple USB cable, which some other toothbrush charging cases have, this one uses an adaptor that is almost as bulky as the regular charging stand.

The good battery life means you might not need to charge it while you're away. But considering that the charging travel case is one of the premium features of the iO9, it doesn't really add much to the product.

This short video sums up the key features pretty well:

Different models: iO6 – iO10

iO is actually not the name of a single brush but of a new range of brushes from Oral-B. This follows their Pro, Smart, and Genius series.

You can choose from models 3 through 10 — in the table below you can see how models 6 through 10 compare:

Anything not mentioned here is the same on all models. So, does the iO9 provide $100 of extra value vs the iO7? If you're wondering whether to pay the extra for the top model, here's our take.

io toothbrush review

  • Two extra brushing modes are nice but you'll probably never really use them. The Tongue Cleaner mode is just programmed to turn off after 20 seconds, but you could do the same thing manually with any other mode. Actually, we recommend you try using a tongue scraper if you really want a clean tongue.
  • A choice of colors is also nice to have, and since the buttons are black on all models the black version looks a bit sleeker. Same goes for the color screen.
  • 3D teeth tracking is probably the best extra feature, but only if you're committed to using the app every day.
  • A charging travel case is a great idea, but unlike many other brands that supply a USB cord, the Oral-B case has a special main charger. This makes it much less compact, taking up almost as much space as the regular charging base.

So, if you don't want the white version and you're serious about improving your brushing with the app, go for the premium model with all the features.

Oral-B iO vs Pro 1000

Alternatives.

If you'd like to consider a luxury toothbrush that cleans with sonic technology instead of oscillating movements, you can have a look at the Sonicare Prestige 9900 .

oral b vs sonicare prestige

This is the latest release in the Sonicare range and features SenseIQ technology that senses every movement when you brush and adapts to your brushing in real-time, removing up to 20x more plaque than a manual brush.

The SensIQ senses the pressure, motion, and coverage of your brushing up to 100 times per second, and it adapts the intensity automatically if you are brushing, scrubbing, or pushing too hard.

The brush heads are A3 Premium All-in-One, with angled bristles with triangular tips to remove more stains and get into hard-to-reach places. Longer bristles clean deeper into gums for healthier gums in just two weeks — plus, the BrushSync feature lets you know when it's nearly time to replace the head.

Other features include personalized guidance from the app for improved brushing, a lithium ION battery that lasts for 2 weeks on a single charge, and a super sleek, elegant design with a frosted glass charging dock.

If your budget won't stretch far enough for the more luxurious brushes, but you still like the idea of a smart toothbrush, check out the Oral-B Genius X instead. The AI technology may not be as refined as in the iO, but it still lets you see where you have brushed and tracks your overall progress. You'll save quite a bit compared to the iO, but it's still a significant purchase.

The Oclean X Pro Digital is another good option if you want to improve your brushing technique, as it gives you feedback in real time and lets you add on extra seconds of brushing until you hit any spots you missed.

If you've decided that you don't need a smart toothbrush after all then you'll get all the basics at a good price with the Oral-B Pro 1000 , or you can check out a more minimalist brush like the Mode toothbrush .

Is the Oral-B iO worth it?

oral-b io review unboxing

  • You know your brushing habits and technique need some improvement
  • You want better plaque removal and gingivitis reduction then the best Sonicare toothbrush provides
  • You're frustrated with the noisy motor and poor battery life of your current electric toothbrush
  • You're interested in trying out the latest new technology in toothbrushes

If you're down to invest in this high-tech brush, you can order your iO now .

If this is out of your budget, the good news is that there are plenty of other affordable electric toothbrushes around. They may not have quite the same bells and whistles but they will still get your teeth very clean.

Check out our full guide to the best electric toothbrushes to browse some more products at different price points, including cheaper electric toothbrushes , and if you're looking for another oscillating brush, you can check out the Goby Toothbrush .

The Oral-B iO is an excellent toothbrush and if you use it as directed, along with the app to track your brushing habits, it's going to help improve your oral health. The same could be said of many cheaper brushes as well.

There is no one thing about the iO that really justifies the price tag, but when you add it all up: the micro-vibration technology, the smoother clean, the quiet motor, the decent battery, the LED display… you end up with a toothbrush that's fun to use and leaves your teeth feeling great.

When comparing the iO7, 8, and 9, it seems worth paying the extra for the top model, as long as you've found it with a decent discount.

We hope this Oral-B iO review has helped you decide whether this toothbrush is right for you. If you want to read about more options, check out our page about Oral-B vs. Sonicare which compares their brushes at different price points.

Is there an Oral-B iO series 10?

There is currently no Oral-B iO series 10, and a release date isn't set for a model with this name. At the moment, available series models are the iO series 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Is the Oral-B iO toothbrush worth it?

You can probably get the same clean with cheaper Oral-B iO toothbrushes, including the Pro 1000 which costs under $50. It just depends on if you want to splurge for high technology.

Oral-B iO9 Review

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

A top of the range electric toothbrush designed for those that want to give their teeth the best, the Oral-B iO9 is packed full of attention-grabbing features. Are they worth the money, or is this toothbrush more than you need?

First Glance

The Oral-B iO9 electric toothbrush is about as feature-packed as they get. It has a full-colour digital screen, smart modes for personalisation and an enhanced pressure sensor. It’s one of Oral-B's most advanced brushes, using AI technology.

Oral B iO 9

  • Round toothbrush heads for easy and comfortable cleaning
  • Pressure control and position detection so every tooth gets thoroughly cleaned
  • Fast charging, including a travel charging case
  • Battery life could be much better
  • Not as easy to grip as some other electric toothbrushes
  • High price for more tech than necessary

About the brand

The Oral-B brand is one that most people have heard of. It’s been around since 1950, and you’re likely to see Oral-B products in your local dentist’s office. Originally started by a dentist, Oral-B is now part of Proctor & Gamble which gives the brand a worldwide presence. Many dentists advertise, sell and promote Oral-B products.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

Oral-B electric toothbrushes have been made using Braun technology. Some of their brushes are very affordable, starting at around £30, whilst others have an RRP of close to £500. As the price rises, you’ll find each toothbrush equipped with even more tech. You can also buy a wide variety of other Oral-B dental care products like floss, water flossers, mouthwash, toothpaste and manual toothbrushes.

With the Oral-B brand, you know that you’re getting a trusted name and a toothbrush that’s very safe to use. Does this toothbrush live up to the good impressions that Oral-B has made over the years?

What’s in the box?

As soon as you open the box to get to your new iO9 toothbrush, it will be clear that your money has been spent on a lot of useful accessories. As well as a magnetic charger that promises to fast charge your toothbrush in three hours, you’ll also get a travel case to charge your toothbrush on the go.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

A refill holder looks after any spare toothbrush heads. It’s always good to have at least one, and ideally more, ready to go. It’s recommended that you replace your toothbrush head at least every three months, as well as if it’s damaged or after a period of illness.

The iO9 comes in a few different colours. Get it in black, white or a colour called rose quartz that could better be described as ‘grey with the slightest hint of pink’.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

The iO9’s charging station uses magnets to initiate charging. This means that your toothbrush just rests gently on the top of the charger. This includes a 2-pin shaving plug, so most people will want an adaptor that will work in a standard 3-pin outlet. The travel charging case also comes with a 2-pin shaving plug. That’s great if you’re in a hotel room, as most have the right power outlets, though again you might like to keep an adaptor with you. If that’s the case, you’ll need to buy your own as these aren’t included in the box.

You’ll get one Ultimate Clean brush head to get you started. If you want more, you can purchase four refills in a pack. This option would give you toothbrush heads to get you through a full year, with refill packs typically costing about £25 for four.

Look and Feel

The iO9 electric toothbrush is comfortable and easy to hold but lacks the rubber grip that many prefer from other Oral-B brushes. The lack of rubber grip shouldn’t cause too many problems for the everyday electric toothbrush user but may be something you’ll miss if you have any existing grip problems.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

One of the best things about this toothbrush is that the power goes straight to its head! Vibrations within the toothbrush handle are very carefully controlled so that all the movement happens where it’s needed and not along the handle where it isn’t.

You get a choice of toothbrush colours – black, white or rose quartz. All three brushes have a premium look, likened to iPhone devices, which will really appeal to people that want the most stylish gadgets at home. The full colour display is more than just a few LEDs, with beautiful colour blending that adds to the high-tech look and feel of the iO9 toothbrush.

Effectiveness

Oral-B brushes have always been known for their round, oscillating heads. This toothbrush is no exception. Though even the cheapest Oral-B brushes use these circular movements, they’re a feature that most people wouldn’t want to give up. The oscillating heads provide a thorough clean, often considered to be much more effective than side-to-side sonic technology. Fortunately, even if you disagree with this opinion, the iO9 toothbrush has you covered. It combines circular movements with fast sideways movements, keeping the much-loved Oral-B brushing movements and combining them with sonic technology. As a result, you really will get a dentist clean feeling.

Choose from 7 different cleaning modes, giving you options to personalise your brushing experience. Daily Clean is what you’ll get with most brushes, though you can also choose from other options like the gentle Sensitive and Super Sensitive, the targeted Tongue Cleaner, Whitening and Gum Care, and the powerful Intense Clean.

If you struggle with sensitive teeth and gums, the gentle Sensitive modes can help to maintain good dental hygiene whilst limiting any discomfort. Intense Clean is incredibly powerful, so should be used sparingly if you want to work on those more embedded stains. Use the other modes to really focus on one specific element of cleaning. The Tongue Cleaner mode helps to freshen your breath, whilst the Gum Care mode can reduce the risk of gingivitis.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

Coloured lights on the toothbrush handle will show if you’re brushing too hard, or if you’re not applying enough pressure. A white light is perfect. A green light shows that you’re not pressing enough, and a red light shows you’re using too much pressure. Use the lights to adjust your brushing style, making sure that your efforts are effective without any damage to your gums.

Smart AI technology will also help with effective tooth brushing. Connect to the Oral-B app on your smartphone using Bluetooth and see any teeth that you’re missing. Position sensors within the toothbrush identify areas you’ve missed, showing you a map of your teeth on your phone screen with any problem areas made clear. Most people have one or two teeth that they consistently struggle to brush properly – with the Oral-B app, you’ll learn which parts of your mouth you accidentally neglect.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

Whilst the smartphone app can really enhance your cleaning routine, it’s not something that everyone will value. Many people will find that it’s something of a novelty, interesting for the first few days but then more effort than it’s worth. In a rush in the morning, you might not go to the effort of remembering your phone and loading up the Oral-B app. Remember that you’re paying more for all of this technology, but may find a cheaper toothbrush just as good if you won’t take full advantage of the app.

Battery Life

Sadly, Oral-B brushes aren’t known for their great battery life. The iO9 is no exception. At first, you’ll notice that you need to charge your toothbrush quite frequently. Every time you brush, you’ll use about 10% of the battery – assuming that you’re brushing for two minutes. Those that like to use several different brushing programs, adding things like Whitening and Tongue Brushing to their Journey, may find that more than 10% is used. This means that, at best, you’ll have to charge your toothbrush every five days. If you’re going away, you really will want to take the travel charger in your suitcase.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

You can’t replace the battery in your Oral-B toothbrush. A common problem with Oral-B brushes is that the battery can start to fail after about a year of use. Suddenly the brush doesn’t seem to charge as well and loses its power more quickly. When you’ve spent so much on a high-tech toothbrush, it would be nice to have the option to replace the battery without buying a whole new brush.

To help to balance the charging issues, this Oral-B brush has fast charging and will be fully charged in roughly three hours. It also stops charging at 100%, so you won’t be harming the battery by leaving the toothbrush on its charger. This can help to soften the blow, as you could use the charger as a permanent stand and have your brush fully charged between uses. If you can get into that habit, the relatively short battery life of this brush shouldn’t be something you’ll think about.

A top-of-the-range electric toothbrush, the iO9 has an RRP of £499.99. Fortunately, you shouldn’t need to pay that much. Oral-B brushes are frequently on offer, with the iO9 available half price if you shop around a little.

By anyone’s standards, the iO9 is an expensive electric toothbrush. For your money you’ll get many impressive features, but how many will you really use? A lot of the features are likely to be little more than short-lived novelty, which means that you could probably get just as much from one of Oral-B's slightly cheaper models.

You’re likely to feel that you’re paying for gimmicks, though if you’ll actually use the Oral-B app these gimmicks could be worth every penny. You’ll need to take full advantage of brush features to make the investment worthwhile.

Using the Oral-B iO9 with clear aligners

If you're one of the many people who are using clear aligners to help straighten your smile, you'll know that it's important to care for them properly. The Oral-B iO9 can help you to maintain your aligners, ensuring they stay clean and fresh and that they don't accrue a build up of acid and bacteria that could damage your teeth.

Make sure, before you dive straight in with the toothbrush, that you check the recommended cleaning method from your provider. It may be that you should only use water, or they might tell you to use a little bit of toothpaste to help clear any lingering bacteria. You'll just need to ensure you've rinsed them thoroughly when you're done.

Some providers won't recommend using an electric toothbrush at all – certain aligners are made from a thinner plastic that could be damaged. So always read the guidance from your manufacturer provider before you start.

Final Verdict

The Oral-B iO9 toothbrush takes home dental hygiene close to its current limits. There’s a high price tag, and in exchange, you’ll get the best electric toothbrush technology.

For many users, this brush won’t be worth the money. If you’ll soon get bored of taking your phone to the bathroom and accessing the Oral-B app every time you brush, you’re likely to find that you’ve wasted good money on the iO9. That said, if you use it as intended, it could be a very worthwhile investment.

io9 electric toothbrush with travel case review

Aside from a fairly poor battery life, there are very few downsides to owning this brush if you’ve got the spare cash to spend on it. With seven cleaning modes, Bluetooth technology and pressure and position sensors, you won’t find a better brush for thorough cleaning that feels like you’ve been to the dentist. That said, many people would argue that they don’t quite need to reach this level of perfection. Many other much cheaper brushes can clean almost as well, and sometimes ‘almost’ is good enough.

If you’ll really make an effort to follow cleaning guides and use the app every time you brush, the Oral-B iO9 brush could be worth every penny you spend on it. Before you buy, be honest with yourself about how long it’ll take you to get bored.

Oral B iO 9 FAQs

What kind of charging station does the oral-b io9 use.

The Oral-B iO9 has a magnetic charging station. It comes with a 2-pin shaving plug, so you may need a separate adaptor to charge it at home. The magnetic station is easy to use and keep clean, though you’ll need to keep it where it’s unlikely to get knocked, bashed or shaken. The toothbrush rests on the stand with very little to hold it in place, so any slight movement could cause it to fall and stop charging.

Is Oral B the same as Braun?

Oral-B and Braun are both brand names of Proctor & Gamble. Oral-B was founded by a dentist and is a name that consumers trust for their dental care products. Braun provides the behind-the-scenes technology, designing and creating the brushes.

What is Oral-B iO Series?

The Oral-B iO Series is top of the range. These brushes feature the latest and greatest technology, designed for those that have money to spend on the best possible clean. They’re the most advanced electric toothbrushes available from Oral-B.

What is the difference between the brushes in the Oral-B iO Series?

The Oral-B iO9 is the very best of Oral-B brushes. The iO7 has five brushing modes and the iO8 has six, but the iO9 features seven brushing modes for the most superior clean. It also features 3D teeth tracking, so it can show on the Oral-B app exactly which teeth you’ve cleaned properly. Finally, the full colour screen is only available on the iO8 and iO9. The iO7 brush instead has a black and white screen.

Great toothbrush however…

Lovely toothbrush, does the job. Teeth have never felt so clean and fresh. However there are 2 disadvantages. The battery life will only last around a week or so. There is so permanent off button; The brush itself is sensitive to touch so once picked up the screen automatically comes on. Another downside is there is no 3 pin charger (UK) included so if you plan on buying this, make sure you have a 2pin-to-3pin plug.

Was this helpful?

Absolutely love this product! Great design, colour and mode options available. It’s great to link it to your phone to see how well you’re getting on with your daily coverage along with daily targets and areas to improve.  All the accessories are brilliant, particularly for travel case plus all the spare brush heads!! Best purchase, highly recommended.

Dmitri Jurowski

Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic/Dmitri Jurowski – review

G lorying in a name that seems to have been chosen by a very large committee, the Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic is a smart modern orchestra based in the city's glitzy modern concert hall . Judging by its London debut, however, it is old-school where it counts.

Its chief conductor is Dmitri Jurowski , and his appearance meant there would be a Jurowski on the Festival Hall podium four times in a week; big brother Vladimir was in the audience to cheer him on. The programme was Russian and proud. Extracts from Prokofiev's ballet Cinderella immediately introduced a distinctive sound, soft-edged but hefty, with well-blended strings underpinned by weighty low woodwind; the rasp of the bass clarinet and contrabassoon were to become gratifyingly familiar sounds.

But not so much in Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, in which the orchestra seemed to be consciously ceding focus to Alexander Ghindin 's piano playing. While Ghindin was all offhand, unfussy brilliance, the orchestra were neat and contained – except, that is, for the opening of the slow movement, when the flute phrasing made the melody sound positively flirty, and Ghindin responded in smooth, almost louche style. His encore, Rachmaninov's G minor Prelude, whizzed by in a flurry of sonorous chords, but the richness with which he brought out the secondary melodies in the middle section spoke of attention to detail worn lightly.

That was just a taster for the main Rachmaninov event – the colossus that is the Symphony No 2, approached by Jurowski with a certain lightness of touch and all the better for it. It was because he began the third movement so gently and at so flowing a pace that he was able to make such an impact with the sense of stillness after its climax. The second movement was crisp, the finale buoyant – and the encore, the Infernal Dance from Stravinsky's Firebird, was a flamboyant signoff from an orchestra confident of hitting its mark.

An excellent scenery. I've been living in Virginia and used to visit my family every year or so.

The obvious choice to fly from KIAD/IAD to Moscow is Turkish Airlines. It flies from LTFM/IST to UUWW/VKO.

The scenery feels so authentic. I felt homesick.

AutoGate works well.

If only we had UUDD/DME of this quality!

Thank you, JustSim!
