Itinerary & Accommodation Snapshot

Please check your required arrival time with the office before booking your flights.

Today you will be greeted by our friendly and professional Tour Directors before we begin our journey north with a scenic drive along the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas. Enjoy a brief tour of this famous tropical village before checking into the premier accommodation choice in Port Douglas - the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort for our overnight stay.

This evening enjoy a sumptuous welcome dinner together at the resort.  Meals: D

This morning we continue our journey north and visit the award-winning Mossman Gorge Centre in the Daintree National Park. Here we enjoy the Dreamtime Gorge Walk, which begins with a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse and ward off bad spirits. Setting off on the walk, we'll be accompanied by experienced Indigenous guides who'll demonstrate traditional plant use, identify bush food sources and provide an enchanting narrative of the rainforest. At the end of the walk enjoy traditional bush tea and damper.

We then venture further into the World Heritage Listed Daintree, the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest in the world. First up, we enjoy an informative cruise on the Daintree River before an exclusive guided tour at Cooper Creek Wilderness. Situated directly below Thornton Peak, the epicentre of refugial significance in the Daintree, Cooper Creek is home to pristine old growth rainforest and extraordinary fan palm galleries. Here we'll take a guided tour along the forest floor with expert, inhabitant guides; an exclusive experience that's far removed from other mass tourism offerings in the area.

Late this afternoon we arrive at the Heritage Lodge and Spa for our overnight stay. Meals: B.L.D

This morning we continue our journey through the Daintree to Cape Tribulation, a headland named by Lieutenant James Cook after his ship struck the Great Barrier Reef in 1770. After a stroll along the beach and a cup of tea, we'll continue north and tackle the infamous Bloomfield Track. Impassable during the wet season, the track passes through some wild country and should only be tackled by 4WD vehicles. There are numerous steep climbs through the rainforest and several creek crossings to negotiate, so sit back and enjoy the scenery as your experienced tour driver does the hard work!

Once across the Bloomfield River we'll visit Bloomfield Falls before lunch at the Lion’s Den Hotel, one of QLD’s oldest bush pubs. We then depart for Cooktown, where Lieutenant Cook beached the Endeavour for repairs after hitting the reef. Upon our arrival we'll enjoy a town tour including the James Cook Museum, Cooktown Botanic Gardens and the Grassy Hill lookout.

We then check in to the 4-star Sovereign Resort Hotel for our overnight stay.  Meals: B.L.D

Today we depart Cooktown along the Battle Camp Road and visit the Old Laura Homestead before arriving into Laura. This area is famous for its rock art.

This morning we visit art sites in the Laura area, where an experienced Aboriginal guide will accompany us to interpret the art and explain the significance of this cultural site.

Later on we enjoy lunch and a visit to the Quinkan Cultural Centre. We then travel through the grassy plains and woodlands of Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, tackling several creek crossings along the way. We'll stop at Kalpowar on the Normanby River for afternoon tea, followed by a visit to Red Lily Lagoon, home to a vast array of flora and fauna. Admire the tall lotus lily with its spectacular pink flowers and dense yellow stamens, and keep an eye out for Brolgas and Sarus cranes striding through the lilies searching for sedge tubers.

This afternoon we pass through Nifold Plain, an open savannah characterised by thousands of magnetic termite mounds. We then continue through to Lotus Bird Lodge, beautifully located on the edge of a tranquil billabong. Enjoy an exclusive two night stay to discover the area. Meals: B.L.D

Today enjoy a breathtaking helicopter flight over Rinyirru (Lakefield). Board our exclusively chartered Bell Jet Ranger and fly over swamps, plains and forests before following the Kennedy River to Princess Charlotte Bay. You’ll spot crocodiles, pigs, cattle and all sorts of other wildlife on this mesmerising flight. It really is the only way to get a true appreciation of the area and adds a great perspective of Cape York Peninsula.

After lunch there's time for a walk around the lodge's billabong or some bird watching. Alternatively, enjoy some free time to yourself and soak up the atmosphere of Cape York from this tranquil location. Meals: B.L.D

Please note: Weight limits apply to all scenic flights

Today we farewell Lotus Bird Lodge and make our way north along the Peninsula Development Road. Pass through Coen before arriving at Archer River Roadhouse for lunch. We then continue on to Weipa, arriving mid-afternoon to check in to the Albatross Bay Resort. Meals: B.L.D

This morning we join Western Cape Eco Tours for a cruise on the Embley River. Explore diverse wildlife habitat, learn about local culture and keep an eye out for some big salt water crocodiles! Our skipper will also provide a detailed insight into Weipa's bauxite mining industry. Afterwards, we’ll visit the Western Cape Cultural Centre which showcases the history of Weipa and its surrounding communities. The centre enjoys an enviable location overlooking the bay, so it’s also a great place for a picnic lunch.

This afternoon we depart Weipa and make our way towards Moreton Telegraph Station. We pass by Batavia Downs before heading north along the Telegraph Track, arriving at Moreton mid-afternoon. Situated on the banks of the Wenlock River, Moreton served as a repeater station for the Overland Telegraph Line established in the 1880's. The last Morse telegram code was sent from Brisbane to Thursday Island on the 24th June 1964, yet the line remained in use until 1987 as the local telephone line.

Upon our arrival at Moreton we’ll check in to our exclusive wilderness lodge for two nights to relax and explore the local area. Our newly refurbished rooms feature ensuite bathrooms, quality furnishings and air-conditioning. Meals: B.L.D

In the 1860s construction began on the Overland Telegraph Line. The northern section ran through very difficult rugged country and the telegraph survey expedition was only the fourth overland expedition ever made to Cape York. Work on the Cape York Peninsula section was completed in 1886, and Moreton Telegraph Station was completed in 1887.

The line served Australia well until the outbreak of war when better communications were required in the face of the threat to the northern coastline. After more than 100 years of service, Moreton eventually ceased communication operations in 1987 with the introduction of the modern era of telecommunications.

Today, join our guides for some interpretive walks around the station and along the Wenlock River, which contains the highest diversity of freshwater fish of all Australian rivers. Species include the Freshwater Sawfish, Spear tooth Shark and more common fish like the Sooty Grunter and Barramundi.

After lunch, there is time to catch up on some washing or simply relax and take in the beautiful surrounds followed by our second night at this historic site. Meals: B.L.D

Today our journey continues north along the Telegraph Track, passing through some wild and rugged countryside. However, as some sections of the track are impassable we'll mainly be travelling on the northern and southern bypass roads on our journey north from Moreton.

This morning enjoy a visit to Fruit Bat Falls for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water of Eliot Creek, followed by a picnic lunch.

We then continue north and cross the Jardine River by vehicular ferry, before arriving at Bamaga where we check in to the Cape York Peninsula Lodge for the next two nights.  Meals: B.L.D

Today we venture to the northernmost point on the Australian Mainland, a Cape traveller’s ultimate destination. The walking track commences at Pajinka and requires a good level of fitness, but is well worth the effort! Get your picture taken next to the iconic signpost and soak up the views of the Torres Strait as your guide fills you in on the history of the area.

This afternoon we visit Somerset, once the home of Frank Jardine and the official government residence on the Cape, protected by British Marines. After a BBQ lunch we return to the hotel where the rest of the day can be spent at your leisure. Tonight enjoy a performance by a local dance group at the resort. Meals: B.L.D

Please note: local dance group is subject to availability.

This morning we head to Seisia and board the ferry for our cruise across Endeavour Strait. Enjoy informative commentary about the Torres Strait Islands from the captain as we make our way to Thursday Island, situated 35km northwest of the tip of Cape York. The Island has a population of approximately 3,000 people and is the main administrative centre of the Torres Strait.

Upon our arrival on Thursday Island we'll enjoy a tour with a local expert before some free time.

We then take the short ferry trip across to Friday Island, home to Kazu Pearls. Here we enjoy a pearl demonstration and a visit to the pearl farm shop where we will have the opportunity to purchase some of their exquisite pearl jewellery.

Later this afternoon we return to Thursday Island for our overnight stay at the Jardine Motel. Meals: B.L.D

Note:  For your convenience when taking the ferries to the islands, we suggest that you reduce your luggage to a small backpack. You will require a change of clothes, comfortable shoes, bathers, toiletries (no sharps), personal ID and Qantas Frequent Flyer card (if you have one). The rest of your luggage will return to Cairns on the coach.

This morning we catch a ferry across to Horn Island and enjoy a tour of this once prominent WWII air base before visiting the Torres Strait Heritage Museum. We then board our QANTAS flight back to Cairns, arriving in time for lunch.

For our final evening together, we'll check into the Shangri-La The Marina. Enjoy luxurious rooms in this perfectly positioned hotel along the Esplanade. Tonight, enjoy a special farewell dinner at the hotel and reflect upon our incredible adventure to the tip of Australia. Meals: B.L.D

After breakfast enjoy a relaxing morning before your transfer to Cairns airport, or to your accommodation if staying on. Meals: B

Punsand Bay Cape York

  • Cape York is calling: Planning a trip to The Tip

HannahStatham

Hannah Statham

Ready to tackle one of Australia’s most remote landscapes, Cape York? Just you, a car and 1,200km of untamed, World Heritage-listed, 180 million year-old rugged rainforest beauty – aka The Tip.

Like most good adventures, this one is 90% preparation and 10% perspiration (seriously, it gets hot up here) – so you’ll want to do PhD-levels of research before you make tracks up the peninsula.

If you’re ready to head north, triple check you’re covered with this Cape York guide:

Service? What Service?

camping tours cairns to cape york

No phone service? A view this good is better uninterrupted.

If you were planning to Insta-story your entire trip from Cairns to Cape York, we’ve got some bad news for your followers. Cape York has limited phone reception and expensive pay-per-use WiFi, that is, if you find any at all.

The only glimmer of 3G hope will be found with Telstra, so if you’re not driving in a convoy, hire a UHF radio because you can’t rely on your smartphone for much else than a camera after crossing the Daintree River.

Double Trouble[shoot]

camping tours cairns to cape york

Load 'em up - you don't need to pack light for a trip to The Tip.

You only need to look at the vacant car bodies along the Peninsula Development Road to see the kind of spanner Cape York can throw into your planning works. Don’t join the bad luck stories, come prepared with a pair of spare tyres, extra tank of fuel and enough drinking water to stay hydrated in case you get stuck and need to wait for help.

Scare tactics aside, you don’t need to brace yourself for Cape-York-ageddon – if you do go through a set of tyres, you’ll still find mechanics to replace a set along the way.

Fuel can be few and far between

camping tours cairns to cape york

Plan your trip to map out the best fuel stations and roadhouses along the way.

Contrary to what Cape York horror stories will tell you, there are fuel stations and roadhouses stocking both petrol and diesel along the way (in fact, the longest distance between bowsers is 140km). Major towns like Weipa will have a couple of different fuel service centres, so you can even get fussy over your ethanol of choice. That said, it’s a competitive market and prices will vary on the Peninsula, so don’t expect to call RACQ having found the cheapest fill-up in Australia.

This trip has as much variety in its road surfaces as a mixed bag of lollies, so the amount of fuel you’ll chew through differs day-to-day. It’s recommended you throw out your usual fuel-range calculator and pack some liquid ‘go’ in the boot.

You won't be eating like an astronaut

camping tours cairns to cape york

Take a break at the Archer River Roadhouse and tuck into the best burgers in Cape York.

Food isn’t dehydrated, preserved or pickled up here so you don’t need to pack your car with enough food to outlast an apocalypse. Stock your groceries up in Weipa, Seisia and Bamaga and eat fresh produce on this road trip to the top.

What’s more, if you don’t feel like cooking, roadhouses along the way will sell takeaway food like burgers, snags and chips to sate whatever hunger pangs ail you.

Don't BYO booze

camping tours cairns to cape york

Grab a drink at the famous Lions Den Hotel just outside of Cooktown.

Just because you like a beer after a hard day bouncing over Cape York’s corrugations, doesn’t mean you can crack the top off a tallie with gay abandon. Booze bans run across certain parts of the Cape and heavy fines apply if caught with alcohol.

Technically, you can travel with more alcohol than the limit if you can prove you’re a ‘bona fide traveller’. If you choose to go down this road, you’ll need to prove you’re not a resident in a restricted area, nor is your destination or drive route within one.

Keep it simple, pick up your grog once you’re outside the booze bans, or risk a fine.

Leave nothing but footprints and tyre tracks

camping tours cairns to cape york

Keep The Cape beautiful and clean up after yourself when travelling through the region.

It goes without saying you must take your rubbish with you, leaving a trail of nothing but cleanliness behind your 4WD tracks. Some (but not all) campsites and roadhouses provide rubbish bins, so you don’t need to worry about becoming a rubbish tip before you make it The Tip.

There are many things you can do to ensure you are travelling consciously through this pristine environment, including only having fires in designated areas if it’s safe to do so, ensuring you are not illegally accessing private land and only camping in designated areas where you have received prior permission or made a booking for, including through Queensland Parks

The best time to go

Tip of Cape York Peninsula sign

The top of Australia.

The best time to embark on an adventure to Cape York is during the cooler months and June through to October provide ideal conditions. Try any other time of year and you might just find the roads closed and flooded in.

You can expect busier roads during school holidays – but don’t worry, you won’t find a traffic jam. Only about 60,000 visitors each year make the trip to the top.

Prepare your pets

camping tours cairns to cape york

Pets are welcome in some parts of The Cape

We don’t recommend bringing your pet on your trip, as domestic animals are prohibited from entering National Parks, and you’ll come across over 10 of them throughout Cape York. Before you plonk the pooch in the car, consider whether you can leave them with a friend or pet-sitter. If you do bring you beloved pet, please keep them on a leash at all times to ensure the safety of native wildlife and be sure to hash out your national park exploring plan.

Be cautious about the crocs (and all other wild animals)

camping tours cairns to cape york

Keep a safe distance from all wildlife you encounter along the way.

If a trip to the pointy end of Australia sparks an internal hype-reel of you, in khaki, wrestling a croc, it’s time to press pause. You’ll want to keep your wits about you, following all caution signs because crocs don’t just live in these waters, they hunt in em’ too. Be alert, not alarmed – even though these prehistoric creatures are hunters, chances are you won’t even see one.

Both fresh and saltwater crocs are found in the Cape’s waterways, so don’t linger on the edge of rivers and creeks, only go swimming in well-known croc-free areas, and if you do spot a croc … stay well away.

Other animals with smaller teeth are much easier to keep at bay with insect repellent.

Give your big rig a makeover before you go

camping tours cairns to cape york

Be sure to fit your rig with the essentials to get yourself from A to B.

Having a 4WD doesn’t mean you’re set to hit the road. Adding some extra oomph to your vehicle will make your trip safer – it’s recommended to install a snorkel (particularly if driving diesel), tyre repair kit, and good suspension setup with a two-inch lift kit because up here, it doesn’t matter what you’re driving, when you’re bonnet high in the Wenlock River, it’s all about clearance.

Make sure to pack rescue equipment too – snatch straps, basic tools and rated shackles to get yourself out of any situations where you find yourself stuck.

Swap your roadside assistance to comprehensive because you won’t want to be paying by the kilometre to be towed out of this terrain either.

Dress the part

camping tours cairns to cape york

Pack for all weather conditions, but most importantly for a dip in the water at Fruit Bat Falls.

Once your 4WD looks the part, it’s your turn. Camping attire should top your luggage list and we suggest you pack a few extra outfits. The trip to the tip is unpredictable and you’re bound to get wet and muddy at some point during the day, either from getting out to help push your own car out of a crossing or to help out someone else in a pickle.

You won’t want to forget your swimmers either, or as Queenslander’s say, “togs”, especially once you see Fruit Bat Falls’ emerald green waters.

Looking to opt for an easier route?

camping tours cairns to cape york

There are options available for drivers to take bypass roads for a smoother journey.

Whether you’re a 4WD fanatic, or a city slicker ticking off their Tropical North Queensland bucket list, there’s no shame in opting for a safer route. The Old Telegraph Track might be famous, but it’s not for everyone.

If you’re not feeling confident, it’s always preferable to take an alternative bypass route. Use a detailed Hema Map to navigate your way and find a route that matches your adrenaline level.

You don't have to prepare a thing if you don't want to

camping tours cairns to cape york

There are a variety of tours available to make it to The Cape.

Not one for steering the wheel, packing for days, or prepping with this list? You can still experience the trip of a lifetime without the stress of responsibility – just join a Cape York tour or tag along to the top.

Simply book a seat in one of the many tour companies that take off from Cairns such as Tagalong Tours of Australia and  Cockatours . Voila! Cape York without any of that pesky preparation.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Visit James Cook Museum in the magnificent 19th Century Sisters of Mercy Convent.  Gain an insight into the grounding of the Endeavour and the most significant land based stay of Captain Cook’s east coast expedition. Travel to Lakeland and Laura via the mysterious Black Mountains, a special story place for the Kuku Yalanji people. World-class Aboriginal rock art and wonderful locally grown coffee are two big drawcards for these small towns.    Best known are the Quinkan Rock Art Galleries, considered to be some of the most significant Aboriginal art sites in the world. We’ll join an Indigenous guided tour of the Split Rock Galleries.

Travel along the Peninsula Developmental Road to the Hann River Roadhouse for a short break before continuing on to Musgrave Roadhouse.

We continue along the Peninsula Development Road to the old mining community of Coen.    The town was originally created around a repeater station in the Overland Telegraph Line to the Tip of Cape York Peninsula.

We’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Archer River Roadhouse.    Located on the banks of the crystal clear Archer River, the Roadhouse is famous for the massive Archer Burger, best served with an icy cold drink under their shaded patio.

Last stop for the day is Weipa, the Barramundi capital of Queensland. Originally an Aboriginal mission, Weipa grew to become a township after the discovery of bauxite. Late afternoon relax at your accommodation with sweeping views of Albatross Bay.

This was an 11-day tour from Cairns to the Tip of Australia, with a flight back to Cairns from Horn Island. Kathy and Brett were fantastic tour guides full of stories and information from having lived in the Cape for over 3 years and visited it many other times. When a scheduled visit wasn’t possible because a facility was closed for some reason, they had a substitute available eg Finch Beach and Red Beach. We saw so much, learnt so much, laughed so much, and ate so much!! Highlights were the Daintree, Cooktown, Weipa, the Tip, and the Torres Strait Islands. But every day was enjoyable. Highly recommended! Geoff

Could not fault – itinerary – 4WD vehicle – accommodation – guide & driver – all-inclusive cost – interesting destinations. Good value for money. Great to support an Australian enterprise. Would highly recommend it to anyone. Lorraine

Fabulous! Cathy and Brett were amazing, knew the area like the back of their hands. They were alert to everything making the time wonderful and easy. The two-night stops were good, the food great, and the beds comfy and clean. The tour means you do not need to spend any money from start to finish unless you want a beer, and to buy cards and caps, etc. The tour was informative, educational, entertaining, and highly recommended. Elizabeth

In most towns you will get phone service, but there are large stretches between towns that may not have service. Satellite phones are carried on tours for emergency use. Phone service will be possible in Cairns, Laura, Seisia, Roko Island, Thursday Island, Horn Island, Weipa, Cooktown and Coen. There may be other locations and all service will depend on the phone carrier used.

Cross the Daintree River and you’re on your way to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. You’re not here to dive in – your journey takes you off-road along the 4WD Bloomfield Track. Legends (and myths) await at Black Mountain, sometimes dubbed the Bermuda Triangle of Australia.

Day 2 Cooktown - Musgrave

Today you're in Quinkan Country, home to one of Australia best-preserved rock-art sites. Nearby, Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park is big in more ways than one, from its enormous waterlily-covered billabongs to its unfathomable number of birds.

Day 3 Musgrave - Weipa

The historic gold town of Coen may be small in size, but it’s got plenty of country swagger. Bauxite mining was the reason the tiny town of Weipa was formed. Today, visitors arrive for blazing sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Day 4 Weipa - Bramwell

How do you want to spend your pre-lunch hours? Perhaps on an optional Weipa Wildlife & Eco Cruise, revealing First Nations culture and wildlife. Or dig deep on a bauxite mine tour. How these rocks are pulled from the ground is head-scratching. As is the size of Bramwell Station, Australia’s northernmost cattle station and your base for the night.

Day 5 Bramwell - Seisia

Your early start today is worth it when you arrive at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Dive in, splash about, cool off, unwind. There’s not much between you and Cape York; cross the Jardine River and you’re there. Seisia is the departure point for ferries to Thursday Island and fishing charters. It’s also the gateway to tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 6 Cape York - Somerset

Not many people can say they’ve stood at the very top of mainland Australia at Somerset, the first European settlement on the Cape York Peninsula. Lunch is served on palm fringed Anchorage Beach overlooking the Albany Passage.

Day 7 Seisia - Thursday Island - Cairns

Rich in Aboriginal culture, history and natural beauty, Thursday Island is the capital of the Torres Strait Islands. Time might stand still here, but you won’t – you’re on a guided tour before heading to Horn Island to board your aircraft, flying over the Great Barrier Reef back to Cairns. Wait, how did this week pass so quickly?

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

How we release tours.

Unlike the big companies, we don’t announce tours until the current season is complete.  We usually release tours in October, about 6 months before tours depart.  We like to review the year past and do our best to improve our itinerary.  We also like to wait for other Cape York events to release their dates.

If you are wanting to go on a tour a year in advance, we have a waiting list which you can put your name on.  When tour dates for that season are finalised, we contact people on the waiting list in the order they contacted us.

If you would like to be put on the waiting list for a future tour please email us and provide:

  • Preferred tour & month of tour
  • A contact mobile phone number
  • Full names of all travellers
  • City and state of all travellers

Dates, itineraries & prices Dates and itineraries will be similar to the current listings, with Cape York tours running May-July in 2024. Gulf Savannah and Kimberley tours will be run in 2025. If you are interested in these, make sure you get on the list soon as we have high demand for these tours!

Top Reviews 2022

“A wonderful experience and tour. Everything is well thought out and it all runs so smoothly. Joe and Kody our guides were professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. They made the trip so enjoyable. We are asked to choose a highlight, but everyday had a new one. If you like the great outdoors then don’t hesitate to book your tour with Cockatours. The tour is excellent value and you won’t be disappointed.” Charlene, 2022

“Rossy takes so much care to ensure you are going to have a great trip! I went to Cape York on the MAN truck with Joe and Kody and you can just tell that Rossy chooses his guides and cooks with such thought and care to know you will have a great time! Yes it is real camping, yes there are mattresses and good linen, yes they really do have everything on the truck! Highly recommend pre-buying the souvenir shirt, they keep you warm in the water and cool in the sun!” Catherine, 2022

“A trip to The Tip with the amazing Joe and Kody was definitely a life changing and very memorable experience. They were fun, knowledgeable guys who made every day exciting and different to all the other days. Joe handled the 12-ton truck admirably, so that, coupled with his knowledge of the tricky road conditions and the comfort of the truck, made our travel something we could eagerly anticipate each time we boarded. Kody’s main role was to cook our meals, which he did superbly. Each meal was delicious, different every day, and served hot and plentifully. But he also took great care of us in many other ways, and had a fantastic sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for these chaps and they made every day a true delight.

The trip itself was superb. I’m sure we saw many sights, and heard much information that other travellers might not, especially if they did the trip on their own. I can’t recommend Cockatours highly enough and have put my name on the wait list for next year’s Gulf Savannah trip. There were too many exceptional experiences and places visited to pick a favourite, so I’d prefer to leave that for future travellers to discover for themselves.” Brodwyn, 2022

Client Testimonial

We were made to feel like part of the family right from the start and Rossy’s banter as we covered the bumpy dusty roads was interesting and very informative and I began to feel like I was with Steve Irwin himself. This was further enforced as he got such pleasure in catching flora and fauna to show to us city people… … The miles passed by easily as we were shown crocodiles, swam in wonderful streams, and had friendly and interesting communal talks around the campfire as the evening meal was prepared. These people who were strangers to me in the beginning became friends to me by day 2 … …The money I paid was about the best value dollar for dollar that I’ve ever had . I will pass on how much I enjoyed it to all my friends and would recommend this trip to anyone who asks for the rest of my life . The photograph’s we took at the tip of Australia are about my proudest possessions and have centrepiece on my mantelpiece. One of the best 14 days of my life , who knows? You may hear from me again in the future to ask you to fit me in for another 14-day trip!!!
