Assam govt to bring new Tourism Act in upcoming assembly session
Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Tuesday announced that the state government will bring a new Tourism Act in the upcoming state assembly session to develop the tourism sector of the state.
“The state government has taken lots of initiatives to develop the tourism sector of the state and the state has witnessed a massive growth of tourist footfall in the state last year. Our government will bring a new Tourism Act in the upcoming state assembly session,” Jayanta Malla Baruah said.
According to the state government data, Assam had recorded a total of 83,81,953 domestic tourist footfall and 9,009 foreign tourist footfall in 2022.
Till September 2023 there has been a domestic footfall of 61,85,639 and 15,332 foreign tourist footfall showcasing an increase of 103 per cent and 523 per cent increase in domestic and foreign tourist footfalls respectively during the same period (till Sept 2023 as against Sept 2022).
The minister further said that the Tourism Department is working on the formulation of a tourism bill to regulate and facilitate the sustainable development of the tourism industry by encouraging practises that minimize negative impacts on the environment, culture and local communities, ensuring long-term viability as well as tourist safety, enhancing the overall experience of tourists through quality services, infrastructure and attractions, promotion of the cultural heritage of destinations.
“The department plans to celebrate Bihu with fervour and showcase the myriad cultures, traditions and heritage throughout the state. To boost religious tourism and pilgrimage a proposal for the development and beautification of Navagraha Temple has been submitted to Govt. of India. Moreover, developmental activities have already been started at Bhima Shankar Jyotirlinga,” he said.
Adding further Baruah said, “To protect the Ahom legacy in Sivsagar District, the Rang Ghar Project has been undertaken for the development and beautification of the historical site. Another initiative has been taken up by the Department to construct a corridor at Kamakhya Temple to transform the grandeur of the ‘Shaktipeeth’ and make it accessible for differently abled and aged devotees.”
He also said that a couple of Major MoUs were signed in the year 2023 by the Department of Tourism in Assam to give a boost to the Tourism Infrastructure in Assam.
“MoU for setting up a 5-star hotel at Kaziranga with Hyatt Group of Hotels. A skill development centre has been set up at Sonapur in association with Tata Strive for undergoing training for personnel engaged in the tourism and hospitality sector. MoU with TATA group for setting up two high-end Tea Tourism resorts at Kaziranga and another MoU with online booking platform Ease My Trip to set up the online booking system for Assam tourism. In the state’s new Tourism Policy, special focus has been given on EoDB and facilitating single window clearance for Film Tourism,” the Minister said.
On the other hand, the Assam government has decided to start re-registration in all the employment exchanges this month by aiming to collect updated data on unemployed educated youths of the state.
Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the re-registration process in all the employment exchanges of the state will start this month and the process will be continued till February this year.
On the other hand, talking about the achievement of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the state, the Minister said that, so far 70 per cent target has been achieved and the state has targeted to achieve 100 per cent by the end of this year. A total of 20,75,204 (30 per cent) Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) were provided in the year 2023 and the cumulative FHTC progress as of December 30, 2023, is 48,60,749 (69.6 per cent) and 8,817 number of schemes handed over till date. He also said that the state government will construct 1 lakh more toilets in the state this year.

Assam records 575 per cent increase in tourist arrivals in FY 2023, informs Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on April 16 that the state has recorded a staggering 575% growth in tourist arrivals in the financial year 2022–2023. The state welcomed over 1 crore tourists during this period, making it a significant milestone for Assam's tourism industry.
This announcement comes after Sarma inaugurated a 200-room resort developed by the Mayfair Group in Sonapur, near Guwahati, which will boost tourism infrastructure in the state. Sarma tweeted, “I was pleased to inaugurate a stunning 200-room resort developed by the Mayfair Group near Guwahati to support greater tourism infrastructure. All the best to the management.”
According to Padmapani Bora, MD of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation, 17.5 lakh domestic arrivals were registered in the previous fiscal year, 2021–2022. Additionally, Assam contributed almost 10 million out of 11.8 million tourists who visited the Northeast, indicating a significant rise in interest among tourists.
Bora credited the growth to the state's tourism industry becoming more organised, and its website being robust, with in-depth location information and online booking options. He further added that “the ease of conducting business and the general peace are important factors fostering growth in the tourism sector.”
President Droupadi Murmu also visited Assam recently, which was a significant boost to the state's tourism industry. On her three-day visit to Assam, she undertook a jeep safari at Bagori range and witnessed the screening of the Oscar-winning documentary "Elephant Whispers." She also attended a cultural event showcasing Assam's rich culture and heritage. On April 8, the President inaugurated the Gaj Ustav at Kaziranga, which celebrates 30 years of elephant conservation in India. The President also attended the platinum jubilee celebration of the Gauhati high court in Guwahati.

Assam: Tourism minister meets tour operators to promote state
New Delhi : Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah met leading tour operators here to promote the north eastern state as a tourist destination and strengthen cooperation with tourism partners.
As many as 25 Delhi-based tour operators, travel agents and travel journal houses gathered here Thursday evening to prepare attractive packages for promoting Assam in a big way, according to a release of the Assam government.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that Biswanath Ghat of Sonitpur district has been selected as the Best Tourism Village of India 2023 by the Ministry of Tourism.
"Happy to share that Biswanath Ghat has been selected as the Best Tourism Village of India 2023 by the Ministry of Tourism. Selected from amongst 791 applications from 31 States and UTs, Biswanath Ghat's selection reflects the huge efforts that our Govt have taken in promoting rural tourism in Assam," Sarma posted on X.
The state of Assam offers hills to wetlands to reserve forests, food, culture, rural landscape, flora and fauna to get an immersive travel experience for for tourists and film makers. The tea gardens and the natural lush green golf courses are some of the other major attractions.
As the growth in the tourism sector is vital for socio-economic development, the Assam cabinet last year approved the proposal to grant industrial status to the tourism sector.
Assam has been taking a slew of initiatives to promote tourism such as organising road shows in metropolitan cities and taking part in marts and fairs in the country and abroad.

Biswanath Ghat in Assam has been selected as the Best Tourism Village of India 2023 by the Ministry of Tourism, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.
As per a post by Sarma on X (formerly known as Twitter), Biswanath Ghat has been selected from amongst 791 applications from 31 states and Union Territories.
“Biswanath Ghat’s selection reflects the huge efforts that our Government have taken in promoting rural tourism in Assam,” Sarma said.

Biswanath Ghat is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra river and is located towards south from Biswanath Chariali Town.
The Ghat is also popularly known as “Gupta Kashi’ in comparison with Kashi during the golden rule of the Guptas.
It has got its name after the ancient Biswanath mandir.
The Biswanath Ghat has a cluster of temples of different gods and goddesses. A temple of Lord Shiva was located at the confluence of Bridhaganga (Burigonga) river with the Brahmaputra.

Biswanath Ghat is located towards the south of Biswanath Chariali Town populary known as "Gupta Kashi".

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, through his official Twitter account on September 22.
This recognition comes as a result of a rigorous selection process that saw Biswanath Ghat shine amidst stiff competition. The village emerged triumphant from a pool of 791 applications representing 31 states and union territories, underscoring the uniqueness and allure of this quaint destination.

Biswanath Ghat is Located south of Biswanath Chariali Town. Biswanath Ghat is also popularly known as "Gupta Kashi". The town is named after the ancient Biswanath mandir. It is called Gupta Kashi, in comparison with Kashi during the golden rule of the Guptas. The ghat has a cluster of temples of different gods. Seven religious sites to be connected by Waterways in Guwahati

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) is committed towards developing Inland Waterways. In this line, an MoU for ‘Riverine based tourism Circuit’ being developed over river Brahmaputra will be signed between Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL), Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC) and Directorate of Inland Water Transport (DIWT) Assam in Guwahati on 19 th May 2023. The signing ceremony will take place in august presence of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam and Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Government of India.
The project is being developed under the Sagarmala Programme at an initial cost of Rs.40-45 crores. SDCL and IWAI will jointly contribute 55% of the project cost while the remaining will be provided by ATDC. DIWT has consented to provide the usage of Ghats near the temples free of cost for the project.
This Sagarmala project will connect the seven historic temples namely Kamakhya, Pandunath, Ashwaklanta, Doul Govinda, Umananda, Chakreshwar and Auniati Satra situated in Guwahati. The circuit will sail from Hanuman Ghat, Uzan Bazar and will complete its journey by covering all the above-mentioned temples through waterways. The ferry service is expected to reduce the overall travel time to less than 2 hours for completing one complete circuit.

A meeting was held between Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and leading tour operators from Delhi to promote the state as a tourist destination.
